Mexico Government Makes It Official: Won’t Pay for Trump Wall

Nope
Politics • Views: 42,614

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Donald Trump’s talk of building a monstrous 2,000-mile long wall between the US and Mexico has to be one of the stupidest ideas ever floated by a politician, and he makes it even stupider by insisting he’s going to make Mexico pay for the whole thing, apparently by the sheer force of his winning personality.

Well, today the Mexican government finally made an official statement about the Trumpenstein’s asinine right wing talking point, and it’s exactly what you might expect.

“I say it emphatically and categorically: Mexico, under no circumstance is going to pay for the wall that Mr. Trump is proposing,” Mexican Treasury Secretary Luis Videgaray said late Wednesday to Milenio television.

The wall proposal by the Republican presidential hopeful has been criticized widely and fiercely in Mexico, but the government itself has tried to avoid commenting directly on the issue until now.

[…]

“Building a wall between Mexico and the United States is a very bad idea, it is an idea based in ignorance and that is not supported by the reality of North American integration,” Videgaray said. He said there was no way that Mexican taxpayers could pay for that sort of project.

Anybody remember this failed Trump flim-flam?

Nov 23rd 2009
Donald Trump enters the world of multi-level marketing

What happens when you combine one of the world’s most ridiculed business personalities with one of the world’s most ridiculed business models?

**The Trump Network**, the new Donald Trump-branded multi-level marketing business that is “designed to make people healthier with customized vitamins and nutritional supplements, and to encourage individuals to become entrepreneurs and to take control of their financial well-being.”

In an e-mail, Trump told The Associated Press that The Trump Network is his “rescue and recovery program” for people who have been hit hard by the recession.

If you do want to join the Trump Network, you can start with just $48. That will get you a marketing kit and three months of access to a Web site where you can direct your customers and recruits. But the AP adds that “participants are often sold a $497 package that includes the marketing kit, products, CDs, sales tips and coupons.”

Although the strength of Donald Trump’s brand has been in decline for some time, he’s probably a good fit for multi-level marketing. While most serious businesspeople see him as a pariah, there are quite a few wanna-bes who look up him — and might just be desparate enough for cash to give multi-level marketing a try.

At least one ambitious distributor has already begun placing ads on Facebook to lure in new recruits (see the screenshots I took above) — and with a significant chunk of the 10.2% of unemployed Americans sitting at home browsing Facebook, it just might work. But pay no attention to the grammatical errors in sentences like “Everyone deserves a chance to have the life they dream about!”

Is Trump Network a good ticket to wealth? Here’s what the False Profits blog had to say about that in August, when news of Trump’s MLM project first began to trickle in: “To those not caught up in MLM’s delusions and entrapments, Trump’s association with MLM is a red flag of flim-flam. A guy known for extravagant consumption, an overbearing braggart, a figment of PR spin, a regular on the covers of celebrity scandal magazines, a promoter of professional wrestling, a bankrupt executive in the gambling industry, a schemer notorious for skipping out on debts, a man famous for win-lose ‘deals.’ This is the spokesman for a business based on person-to-person selling to friends and relatives?”

What’s particularly hilarious is that Trump stated that he was never going to build a 2,000 mile wall - that there’d be natural barriers in places. That’d be deserts and rivers and mountains for the uninitiated.

In other words, he was promising the rubes vaporware, and they fell for it.

Again.

Cracked published an article - today, I think? - talking about ways Donald Trump could achieve his insane goals. They mentioned, specifically referring to the wall, that it might be possible to make “Mexico” pay for the wall by seizing remittance payments from Mexican immigrants after declaring a state of emergency with respect to illegal immigration. I have no idea if that has any legal basis whatsoever, but it certainly sounds more plausible than trying to strong-arm Mexico into actually coughing up dough for the wall.

To be fair, modern building techniques would mitigate that concern somewhat. Not to say it would be a bloodless wall, but the Trump Wall (tm) would probably not kill as many people in its construction as the Great Wall.

While Googling that I found a couple of interesting facts about the Wall:

It was true, however, that in most cases, the bodies of dead workers weren’t returned to their home villages to be buried. This was considered a great act of sacrilege at the time, since the Chinese believed (and still do) that if not buried in their home village with ancestors, a person’s soul would become lost and forced to wander as a hungry ghost.

[…]

During the great building efforts of Qin, Han and Ming dynasties, there was even a specific punishment for convicted criminals to work on the Wall. Great Wall scholars discovered records during the Ming dynasty saying that if a convicted criminal died while working on the wall before his sentence was over, he had to be replaced by another member of his family (talk about tough love).
