The Clown Car Comes to Detroit: GOP Debate Thread the First

Ben is with the pyramids now
Politics • Views: 41,931

It’s not going to be the same without Dr. Sleepy dozing off at the far left (irony!) podium, but here’s a live-blogging thread for tonight’s Fox News Republican Klown Kar Klash in Detroit, at the historic Fox Theatre in Detroit.

I think Fox News is doing that thing again where they make you log in with your cable provider before you can watch over the web, but here’s the page if you want to give it a go.

I read a piece in the NYT today on how the moderators prepare for the debate. They get their subject areas, make up the questions, and then look to see how the candidates can try to ‘duck and pivot’ on any questions, what the facts are in relationship to the probable answers.

Sometimes I do that with friends I know I’m going to disagree with. I mean some may call that cowardly but sometimes you just don’t want to get your ear talked off by someone who you know you’re never going to agree with. I’ve come to the conclusion that my best friend from growing up is probably quite wingnutty. I never talk politics with him. When I visited him in 2012 during that primary season, his stepbrother, a vet was ragging a lot on Obama and I just kept my tongue tied. I learned later that the guy had witnessed a lot of shit in Iraq that no one should have to so I was glad that I did not engage.

Military history question: Have US solders ever refused an order from a president? When is the last time US soldiers refused to do something to where it stopped an operation?

Off the top of my head I would say only places in particularly nasty battles where troops on the field refused to carry out assaults guaranteed to generate heavy losses for no gains. Or they made a very tentative effort and immediately took cover.

American Civil War during Battle of Cold Harbor and some attacks during the Siege of Petersburg. And digging in books I could probably find an example or two from World War II on a much smaller scale (like company level) from the Italian Campaign.

In either case I don’t think this brought a large scale operation to a halt in the early stages - this was after things were underway. And not due to an order being “illegal”, but more due to it being obviously foolhardy or suicidal.

Well, enjoy the torture parade.

You deal with the reality you have, and reliably half of the population approves of torturing terror suspects. No chance of a conviction in the United States, and any prosecution would have derailed the administration and resulted in retaliatory impeachment and prosecutions after the fact against Obama and his people.

This also means that our system of rule of law is about as stable as a 1970’s banana republic because we have no means to actually apply the law to the people in power.

This will have to be resolved by another country that claims universal jurisdiction over war crimes. We actually cannot handle it ourselves.

Might find small-unit refusals at the scenes of some massacres during the Indian Wars, and the helicopter crew that shut down Medina’s bullshit at Mai Lai. These are a long, long way from presidential orders because the DoD decision-making process is designed to short-circuit anything blatantly illegal.

Probably a case or two in the USN regarding firing on survivors in the water. (See Battle of the Bismarck Sea for an example of this where it was done and deemed acceptable.)

I recall reading in at least one book that some USN sub commanders stopped attacking fishing sampans after the first few times they followed orders and attacks and sank them (usually using deckgun fire, or boarding and using explosive charges.)

These cases are still pretty far down the command chain, and also at the small unit level.

re: #440 Teukka

But would that prevent the Drumpfhole from arranging summary executions for insubordination?

If POTUS Trump managed to get the JCS (or enough resignations to pack a JCS) and on down with generals agreeable to something like that we as people and a country would be horribly screwed. Because, in my opinion, that would be the same types willing to order soldiers to fire on unarmed US civilians, and also find the lower level officers (and units) willing to do it.

So it would be outright lynchings orchestrated from the WH in that case?

They wouldn’t have the manpower. There are no Praetorians.

Sorry, Marco, what’s happening in Flint is not in the past tense.

And it’s happening other places too.

That was different, that was something we could ruin Clinton on.

Guess I’m not up on the Flint situation as I should be — exactly what was the Federal breakdown re: Flint?

A black guy was in the white house so he has to be at fault somehow.

Flint water crisis was the result of the Michigan GOP’s long standing goal of privatizing the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department at all costs.

re: #455 Decider

This is actually scary that these are the best the Republicans can offer. It is better for them to stick to talk radio and Fox News bashing Democrats. That is where they belong.

And the biggest problem that the conservative writers and bloggers will simply write about how “Fox News set up and picked on their candidate”. Not that the candidates proceeded to spend the entire debate slap-fighting, throwing shade and generally behaving in a manner that would get a birthday party group tossed out of Chucky-Cheese for being obnoxious.

I do see Trump coming off the worst in this, only because he’s adopted the tactic of openly mocking and belittling Cruz and Rubio to an unprecedented degree. Of course, I’m not drain bamaged, so who knows, the core audience may be eating it up.

I believe the local EPA official failed to prevent the situation. There is probably some merit to this claim, but not much.

No, the Governor had absolute power after imposing the Emergency manager. The State had been told numerous times that the switch to Flint River was a bad idea and he ignored all the warnings

re: #299 thedopefishlives

I’ve mentioned before so I’m sure you’re aware, but I grew up a wingnut and fishfolk are die-hard Republican voters. It’s just how we’re all trained growing up. So even though my family despise Trump as a matter of principle, they’ll vote for him in the general election. I, of course, will never be able to tell them that I voted for Obama in 2012, or that I’m voting on the Democratic side of the aisle in 2016. Although I will probably vote for the guys from my church who are Republicans up for re-election in 2016 in local races, simply because I know they are good guys despite believing some wingnutty things.

What kinds of things will your Wingnut good-guys enact when elected?

Sorry but that’s terrifying to me as a person who might be stuck with your friends ideals - or lack thereof. (I’m not in MN which I think you are, but the principle remains the same.)

I’m sorry but that’s DF twisted logic. Of they’re wingnuts, they’re not going to be good-guys to a lot of people.

Yep… I popped over there early myself. It’s horrible that they had slides showing how wrong he was. That’s because when they (moderators) prepped, they looked at each question and had rebuttals set up for obviously false statements. Good NYT piece on it this morning.

The EPA apparently admitted that they let Michigan official stonewall them.
From The Detroit News

An EPA spokeswoman told Reuters that the federal agency did not act fast enough in addressing the growing problem in the city.

While the federal agency worked to “repeatedly and urgently communicate the steps the state needed to take to properly treat its water, those necessary actions were not taken as quickly as they should have been,” the EPA said in a Tuesday statement.

Not at all. And I don’t think it’s the EPA’s fault. I was just saying that’s where the idea of the feds causing all the problems came from-an actual admission from the local head of the EPA that they didn’t push hard enough. Hence my “some merit to the claim, but not much” remark.
