If so, then this fight will be increasingly between Trump and Cruz. After Rubio and Kasich lose their home states Cruz will crow that he’s the only one to have won his home state.

I believe it will be easier for the Democrats to run against Cruz than to run against Cruz, as I fear many Americans are really into both trade protectionism and torture.

Should we all pause to consider that that was basically the network hosting the debate teaming up with other candidates to give Trump a blanket party?

I didn’t see anybody else getting a custom video debunking.

I mean, good effort, can’t give full marks because there’s no bust of Pompeii…but on the other hand, the degree to which that was transparently a beatdown of the leader, not a debate, actually defeats the purpose of masking a beatdown as a debate.

I mean, if it had been a literal assassination, it would have been effective. As a bit of character assassination, it failed, since it played directly into the idea that “the Establishment” is so scared of Trump that they did the rhetorical equivalent of dropping a bunch of masonry on Cyrano de Bergerac.

Big excitement for me today was opening a new bank account. The university is switching payroll to a new bank, so everyone has to open an account there if we expect to get paid this month.

I said I wanted e-banking, too, so I can buy stuff online. The security gadget is not a USB dongle, as my present bank offers, but a tiny keypad-like affair that offers a six-digit security code to enter on an online form. If you’re familiar with Authy or Google Authenticator apps, it serves the same function.

The new bank is ICBC (Industrial & Commercial Bank of China), which actually recognizes the need for an English-language interface on its website, unlike my old bank, China Construction Bank, which only has a Chinese-language UI. Sooo much easier now to bank online.

Give the guy a break.

But before I knew it he was showing me creationist literature and slick videos. Yeah, it sounds like a skit from Team America, but how is it that satirists like Parker and Stone, or even the folks behind Idiocracy looking like they went time traveling to come up with a documentary of what we’re seeing now? The GOP simply can’t be trusted with power at any level of government.

We see it in Flint.
We see it in New Jersey, where Gov. Christie has basically decided that the state’s fiscal woes will be solved by cutting the estate tax while the pension fund and transportation trust fund run dry and the roads crumble and the state’s transit authority is set to go on strike because the employees have been without a contract for the entirety of his term in office.
We see it in Congress, where the GOP idea of governing is to pass bills they know will never get enacted, claiming it is progress, all while obstructing on constitutionally mandated action - to advise and consent on presidential nominations for the courts.

So how did we get here? Yes, a lot of it is the result of the GOP feeding on anger, hate, and irrational hate and anger at that. But it’s also a media that is far to compliant and interested in narratives and memes to concern itself with opening and honestly calling racism racism. Or that one party is explicitly pandering to racists with its anti-Muslim or xenophobic policies (and that said policies also violate the Constitution - especially Trump’s proposals to limit even Muslim Americans from returning to the US or limiting mosques being built, etc.).

On and on it goes, and this is by no means a MBF instance when I say that Democrats also have to take responsibility for not voting in midterms and off year elections to at least slow or contain the damage. Winning the WH is definitely important, but letting all the down-ticket races slide by means wasted and lost opportunities, and now have to claw back the damage done by a GOP that is hell bent on destroying the very government they claim to represent.

I think it boils down to this argument. In original Ghostbusters, Zeddmore was looking for work and hired. He wasn’t a scientist, but a guy willing to work with the scientists.

In the new movie, the black woman isn’t a scientist, but rather an MTA worker who is willing to work with the 3 white women scientists.

What I think is going on is that the director simply cribbed the structure of the original and sought to keep some kind of continuity. Would it have been nice if one of the scientists was the black woman? Absolutely. Heck, since this is a teaser trailer, we might not know the back story or that this woman went to college and is now getting to use her skills. Or not.

I just can’t get bent out of shape over it. But I don’t see the point of doing what’s essentially either a remake/reimagining or a “sequel” to a movie that is as beloved as Ghostbusters. It’s a setup for disappointment frankly.

I just can’t get bent out of shape over it. But I don’t see the point of doing what’s essentially either a remake/reimagining or a “sequel” to a movie that is as beloved as Ghostbusters. It’s a setup for disappointment frankly.

I have to admit, though, the trailers for Superman v. Batman: Dawn of Justice are looking pretty good. Wonder Woman is finally getting decent screen time, and even Aquaman shows up. There are rumors of other DC superheroes popping up, as well.

Average prerecession U6 unemployment was 8.9%. Obama’s approval rating has been climbing steadily and is nearly dead even in the RCP average, and the GOP is a tire fire. The GOP will either nominate Trump, who no-one outside his base can stand, or a white knight in the chaos of a bitterly contested convention which a Trump advisor has promised his delegates will “burn to the ground” if the nomination is stolen from him. I quit 10 yrs ago after the dentist found a lesion in my mouth. A biopsy was negative (it was caused by irritation from a chipped back tooth), but I threw out almost a whole carton of cigarettes that afternoon and haven’t had another cigarette since. It wasn’t easy, but I thought about my son and what he’d do without a mom.

Not quite 2 yrs ago a friend of mine died of stage 4 lung cancer. He was 47 and hadn’t had a cigarette in 16 yrs. Watching him fight to stay alive and lose that fight solidified my decision and my son also said after that he would never even get near a pack of smokes. It’s so hard to quit, but well worth it in the long term.

I’m now over 2 months into quitting after almost 30 years (9 weeks tomorrow, yay!) Keeping my resolve to quit those first 2 weeks was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Even today I still have moments where the cravings are strong, especially when I’m feeling stressed (one of my major triggers). I’m glad I did. I feel so much better, I can breathe so much easier, food tastes better.

Sadly, that car went to the junkyard years ago. Any pics are physical photographs, though I may have scanned copies somewhere on some hard drive.

My uncle gave me the car when it was already 7 years old. I had to make repairs to it (tires, shocks, exhaust) but it was still cheaper than even a used car then. I drove it 7 more years until the engine died of oil starvation while my ex was driving it somewhere. IIRC, the engine clocked more than 215,000 miles.

It was painted factory snot green with a green fabric interior to match. Probably the ugliest shade of green imaginable, except maybe the avocado appliances that were all the rage in the ’70s.

I used to do graphics work for a company that sold parts for VW group cars…Porsche, Audi and VW. Our customers always demanded German parts as used by the manufacturers. A whole bunch of parts for VW group cars come from all over the world. But hey, they were in manufacturer logo box so all was good.

If we tried to sell them the exact same part (OEM manus like Sachs, Mannesmann, Bosch) and the box said Brazil, Slovakia, China they’d throw a fit and send the parts back.

Porsche owners were the worst. Porsche owners are a very unique group.

Luckily, it’s not a game. The Democratic nominee will have to run against one of the Republican nominees, all of which are dangerous, though in different ways. Cruz thinks he’s on a mission from Gawd, Trump thinks running the country is just like running a casino he declared bankruptcy on, Rubio think’s he’ll skip most of the presidency, and Kasich just knows that how he’s wrecked Ohio will work in the rest of the country.

Well we don’t have any say in it, but either scenario of Trump as the nominee or a white knight emerging out of the chaos of a bitterly contested GOP convention looks very good for Hillary. I prefer Trump because he could badly damage GOP turnout assuring Hillary gets a Democratic Senate and a diminished GOP majority in the House. I won’t dare to hope for a Democratic House.

Slight digression… This is probably the biggest problem I have with the conservative (legal) movement trying to roll back the definition of interstate commerce. Just because I buy a product three blocks from my home at a mom and pop shop (or more likely a publicly traded big box store) doesn’t mean that it was made six blocks from my home. It’s much more likely that the product was assembled by a multinational corporation in a different state (or possibly different country) from components made and shipped from around the world. This isn’t me going to the local blacksmith to buy a new wood burning stove that he forged in the back.

I don’t get the craziness over OEM versus after market. In some cases, like alternators and starters, the after markets can be better than the originals (or the OEM no longer makes the part at all). Or if the car is newish, you need the OEM to maintain warranties or it’s required if you’re rebuilding after an accident/damage.

Doubt that anyone wants the OEM Takata airbags since pretty much every car that has one has been up for a recall at some point.

Guess some people are purists.

When I was in Germany for a week back in 2012 the rental car was a Ford Escort wagon with a 6-speed manual. Not a bad drive.

I happen to believe much of what you wrote. I think some of my comments are very similar.

And when the bully Trump gets real nasty with Hillary he really is going to have to think about how he will look attacking a woman.

As I said the other day…all conservatives have mothers, wives, female friends and there will be some kickback. I still believe it is women that are going to figure in the most in this election.

I also think Trump doesn’t realize how very easy it is to set him off. He loves to blow hard about “when Hillary called me a sexist, I reminded her of her husband and I haven’t heard a peep out of Clinton since.” Little did he realize she got more out of that than he did, and she and Bill didn’t need to say anything more.

I don’t get the craziness over OEM versus after market. In some cases, like alternators and starters, the after markets can be better than the originals (or the OEM no longer makes the part at all). Or if the car is newish, you need the OEM to maintain warranties or it’s required if you’re rebuilding after an accident/damage.

Doubt that anyone wants the OEM Takata airbags since pretty much every car that has one has been up for a recall at some point.

Guess some people are purists.

It was worse than that. We were giving them OEM and if they were not in manufacturer labeled box such as “Genuine VW Part” they still had a fit. Same damn part. Same number, same specs, same everything…no way they’d put that shit on their car!

A good story that really points out some car nut nuttiness. Early 2.0 liter VWs that were turbocharged had a propensity to create some sludge out of the oil (especially lower grade oils) and it would want to form and lay in the bottom of the head and start to block off some of the lubrication holes for the oil to work it’s way back down to the crankcase.

An easy fix was an oversized Bosch oil filter that was the same connection threading, but the body was almost double the size in volume with a larger circumference in the filter case. Same height and all so there was no problems of it hanging too low and it all fit in nicely, easy to change, etc. The larger volume allowed the sludge to lay in the filter. Of course they cost a couple bucks more.

Some guys would bitch that we sent them that filter…it was not the filter in their damn car…what the ‘f’ are you guys doing. We kept the bigger filters in stock because they were better at preventing the sludge problem.

So we bought some of the original spec filters for the cranks that bitched. The sales guys and I would always wonder how long that dude was going to run that car like that before he ran into some major engine problems. It was only a matter of time.

No exertion required. His success is more than likely based on the work of others. Right, and that why I sometimes muse that, maybe, just maybe, if we can’t nominate a genuine liberal/progressive/social democrat, it might be better to go ahead and have “shock treatment” to wake the dullards up. Because, Democrat or Republican, I’ve been watching the incremental right-ward shift since the beginning of 1970s (greatly accelerated post ray-gun), and if were going to end up there anyway, if someone like Sanders (someone completely mainstream in any of the more civilised countries) is “beyond the pale”, then maybe a frigid blast is what it’ll take to truly wake a few of the folks who think a steady diet of LOTEs is just ducky.

I think it’s an inadvertent typo that people’s minds fill in the blank, or see what’s supposed to be there.

I had a boss would would, without fail, type the word ‘you’ in place of ‘your,’ and after about a year I pointed it out to him. Not only did he never notice it, but two co-workers also said ‘You know, I never noticed that.’

I had a chance a few years ago to ask a question of George Soros at an online Q&A event. My question was why were there no liberal media owners like Rupert Murdoch and others like him with super conservative views, and would he be willing to help raise the funds and help organize other wealthy liberals to create something as successful as FOX, to counter the bullshit. His answer? 1) No one would watch it and it was a bad investment and 2) The fight was lost already. I left after that. This lack of fight and the attitude of it won’t ever get that bad is why we’ve lost so much ground. I have never understood this at all, ever. These people have now had 4 decades to grow and expand and take over nearly all media, they’ve gutted investigative journalism and effectively brainwashed half the country. I’m not sure how we can recover from that, but it sure as hell won’t happen without investment and lots, I MEAN LOTS of organization and money from the top down and the bottom up.

Science says Sharrows are not. (At least, one study from Chicago says that.) Bike lanes, the paint stripe kind or the separated kind, often increase problems at intersections. The illusion of protection is what makes them draw out new cyclists. It’s dishonest, IMHO. Some cyclists promote cycling to new riders because it is statistically safer when there are more about. And the casualties are the newbies.

I lose friends in the bike industry because my philosophy has always been to serve cyclists, not to recruit new ones. The industry is shrinking, and I guess it’s my fault.

Now I have no idea what the answer is. Bread and Circuses, Gossip and Screaming and do not get me started on “Reality TV” which is so far removed from reality it might as well be a soap opera.

We need more of this kind of thing. And more cities enforcing motor vehicle laws against motorists that violate speed limits, encroach on bike lanes, etc. It’s easier for cops to tag pedestrians for jaywalking when no cars are around than it is to chase after a car that blows through stop lights or is speeding.

First endorsement I’ve seen in Kentucky (but I really haven’t been paying attention):

The State Journal endorses John Kasich in the Kentucky Republican Caucus. Of the remaining GOP candidates, we see Kasich as a moderate whose positions on certain issues are aligned with what’s best for Americans. He supports less prison time for nonviolent offenders; supports the continuation of Common Core; and recognizes the threat of climate change.
