A Landslide for Hillary Clinton in Mississippi

Sanders campaign loses big
Politics • Views: 34,739

A complete blowout for Hillary Clinton in Mississippi tonight, and here’s an open thread to live-blog the results of the primaries tonight. As I write, it’s still way too early to call the Michigan primary, and in Mississippi the Republican race is still very close as well.

Some amazing results for Clinton:

Trump pulls ahead in MI… but Rubio is below 8% in the early counting…

We’re going to need those kids. Let them down easy.

Sanders is ahead in MI, but something is very, very strange. The CNN and AP have the vote as 50,000 to 46,000 for him, but there’s not a tenth of that vote showing in CNN’s map by county.

No real surprise there. I expect the same condescending crap I’ve seen the past month from people who insist they know what’s better for African-American voters.

Well it depends where those results are coming from. I don’t know about Michigan but our early results always come from the more rural and less populated areas.

It’s an early, but (from the sounds of it) narrow lead. The Sandbaggers will insist that any win is a win, but MI is proportional like all the other states in the Dem primaries, so he needs a big win to avoid adding to Hillary’s lead.

He does tend to feed them.

I posted this in the previous thread right about the time this one started…

By the way, Columbus is full of Bernie commercials. I heard a Bernie radio commercial on local ESPN station 97.1 The Fan at lunchtime while I was making lunch.

It was all about Wall Street being the cause of everything bad. He said something like “We will take on Wall Street and break up the banks and tax them. Will that make them mad…you bet it will, but I don’t care” like making them mad and breaking them up is going to get the Republicans scared and they will go along with any plan Bernie has to change banking.

As far as taxing, I guess he is tying Wall Street Bankers into his plan and making them pay is raising Wall Street’s taxes. From what the people looking into Bernie’s plans say he will be taxing the middle class fairly heavily. I guess he is thinking what everyone will pay in taxes will come back in savings in healthcare, better banking investment and interest on accounts and a more secure social security. I’d like to see that explained further.

However, I think he needs to make that clearer to the average middle class American. I don’t know how well they will take a surprise in higher personal taxes when he is constantly selling everyone on Wall Street being the big problem.

A Vermont native, Weaver worked for Sanders as a legislative assistant while Sanders was in the U.S. House. Weaver was campaign manager for Sanders’ 2006 Senate campaign and, subsequently, became his chief of staff.

In 2010, Weaver left Sanders’ office and started a comic book store in Falls Church, Virginia, called Victory Comics.

Weaver rejoined Sanders to manage his 2016 presidential campaign, but still remained active with Victory Comics. When Mother Jones wrote that “building a coalition that can win a delegate contest might require some kind of superhuman effort” for the campaign, Weaver compared Sanders to Superman, telling the outlet “Truth, justice, and the American way—that’s Bernie. It’s also associated with Superman; I didn’t just come up with that.”

Michigan is proportional, correct? If so, Bernie’s win in the great lake state does little to gain on Hillary Clinton. Time for Bernie to “postpone” his candidacy.

It would be purely symbolic. Unfortunately symbols matter more to some than math.

Bernie would have to win remaining states with far more than 60% of the delegates so as to make up the deficit against Hillary.

That’s just not going to happen. It was over Super Tuesday. It was over after this past weekend. It’s over after tonight.

Bernie’s toast - and it’s not just superdelegates. It’s a numbers game, and Bernie is not going to catch up.

Put another way, Hillary keeps winning states, and Bernie may win a few ones, but can’t close the gap.

I gotta say, the pushback on the Reagan funeral thing is pretty awesome on my Facebook feed. Lots of people pointing out that most presidents don’t go to first ladies’ funerals.

And the Bess Truman pic is showing up a lot.

That really was my first guess since Bess was the first lady of a President that had been President well before the president’s own presidency and was also of an opposite party. I’m glad to see the push back but for the Reagan worshpiers, it won’t matter even if Ronnie did not do the same thing himself. Hell I bet you can find examples for first ladies where no President of First Lady went. I doubt Grace Coolidge had anyone form the Eisenhower administration come to hers.

Actually, I wonder how much of the messaging from the Bernie Bros actually does stem from the top. Goldie Taylor was noting how many people were repeating the crap about Goldwater, and why do African Americans like the Clintons, and was suggesting that this was messaging from campaign central.

If that’s the case, I’m even more disappointed. She was 17 when she supported Goldwater. All that Goldwater support means for me is that I probably wouldn’t want to be friends with 17 year old HRC but what it also shows me is that HRC is capable of intellectual growth.

I said earlier today that I had an intuition Sanders could beat his polling in Michigan tonight, but I didn’t expect things to be quite so close. If Sanders winds up winning in Michigan, in fact, it will count as among the greatest polling errors in primary history. Clinton led by 21.3 percentage points in our final Michigan polling average. Previously, the candidate with the largest lead to lose a state in our database of well-polled primaries and caucuses was Walter Mondale, who led in New Hampshire by 17.1 percentage points but lost to Gary Hart in 1984.

It seems, at least as of earlier this hour, that Detroit was at 0 percent. The nearly uniformly white areas of Grosse Pointe Shores and Plymouth were at 100 percent. Deadly infection outbreak in Wisconsin gaining urgency

Calling it the largest outbreak of its kind and stressing the urgency of finding the source, the CDC has identified two more suspected cases of deadly blood infections and sent additional investigators to Wisconsin.

“This is very much a real outbreak,” said Michael Bell, Deputy Director of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Investigators have not been able to find a medical product, single facility, food source or other means of exposure that could explain how dozens of people — mostly elderly residents of central and southeastern Wisconsin — have become ill from a bacterium named Elizabethkingia anophelis.

Isolated tests from the two suspected cases had not yet been confirmed and officials would not say whether the individuals were sickened or had died. As of Tuesday, the outbreak was tied to 44 confirmed cases, including 18 deaths.

That’d mean that he still loses ground on the day, especially after the Mississippi blowout. Again.

Win the battle, but lose the war.

If Hillary wins, that means Bernie loses the battle and the war. Because he falls even further behind.

That’s the numbers game, and it still favors Hillary.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to show strength across demographic groups in the GOP and his opponents have no answer. Rubio somehow managed to lose to a guy who doesn’t even think that he’s still running.

re: #300 ObserverArt

Damn…there is nothing so nerve racking in sports as the last two minutes in a tight hockey game. Detroit pulled their goalie to go 6 on 5 and it was a shot every couple seconds. Luckily the Columbus Blue Jackets defended well and got an empty goal score with 30 seconds to go to win 6 to 4 over the rival Detroit Redwings. Phew.

What’s real bad is Detroit is 3 hours up the road and their fans make it to the games. They are very vocal and cocky. But they do have history of being one of the best on their side.

I had tickets to see DET play SJS this year.

When DET scored it sounded like they were the home team. Complete with bandwagon fans who didn’t bother to take the new stickers off their hats.

As the vote count continues to come in from Michigan, Sanders is holding on to a 5 percentage point lead. This, of course, is not what the polls indicated would happen. Part of what’s going on, if the exit polls are to be believed, is that Sanders is losing black voters by only 32 percentage points. That’s not all of it, though. He’s also holding his own in the wealthier suburban counties around Detroit, such as Macomb and Oakland. In previous contests, Clinton did quite well with wealthier white voters. The question is what happens when more of Detroit and Flint report. Clinton needs big margins from there to win.

During the playoffs, in the late innings, when the batter is making the pitcher throw strikes or foul off pitches, the catcher is trying to outguess the batter, the pitcher is tired or the reliever is nervous, every moment is thick with anticipation. The entire year is on the line, they’ve been playing every single day since February and if they lose, the whole year goes down the drain and they have to start all over again.

The slow pace of baseball is one of the reasons I enjoy watching it. There’s time to analyze everything about a situation, be it a pitcher/batter matchup, a defensive alignment, or a baserunning miscue. That, and there’s no “blink and you miss it” problem.

Like in Hockey when a team gives up a winning goal with seconds left on the clock. I know all about those because previous Columbus teams specialized in it. My favorites were when we scored the tying goal with less than a minute only to lose seconds later. Those make for real long minutes.

And that is why Baseball is, in fact, the most perfect game ever devised. It’s a team sport, but it’s pretty much a 1 on 1 game for each action. Pitcher v. Batter dueling it out, while on first a fast runner is threatening to break for second. A low arcing hit to the short stop and a quick double play.

All performed at a pace and by people that is human scale. Most men don’t, for a second, think they could survive on an NFL / NHL / NBA matchup, but I bet many secretly think that they could get a bit lucky and get a good hit on a hanging curve, given half a chance.

Hillary just mentioned Tamir Rice in Cleveland. And she is giving us Ohioans credit for being important for the US. So, you might fly over us…but you can’t ignore us!

Donald Trump though. Donald Trump who has called an entire group rapists and said we shouldn’t allow Muslims in. Believe me, I have my criticisms with Bernie’s immigration record. In fact, it’s why I could not vote for him last week but to suggest he’s the same as Trump is wrong.

That’s all well and good. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Bernie’s stances on immigration are not at all what we’d like, especially when compared to Clinton.

But that is miles away from Bernie and Trump having the same positions on immigration.

I voted for HRC in the NH primary, but I’ve defended Bernie and his supporters at LGF because my wife worked for him in the primary and I got to know a few of them and about them. It was a very diverse group in age, gender, and race. As far as i knew, they were well behaved. I went to a couple of events and there was none of the “If bernie doesn’t win I’m going home” stuff.

But clearly i didn’t understand the full scope of what his movement is. The #mississippiberning thing is just the last example of a campaign without discipline.

I’ll gladly defend him. I said it earlier when he was suing the Ohio SoS for not allowing seventeen year olds to vote who turn eight on or before election day was great. I have some problems with Bernie but truth be told a lot of them are related to how viable as a candidate he’d be and effective as President but i’m still glad he fights for the things he does often than not.

I read drunk cooking, and it made me think. We all know about alcohol as an ingredient, but I wonder about how many recipes have come from cooks being a little “lit” in the kitchen? I imagine cooks stumbling around in the kitchen and thinking, how would this ingredient taste combined with this ingredient, and wanting to experiment. Indeed to endure a long time in the kitchens of old, you probably needed to have a little in you from time to time.

I know this may upset the Sanders fans (who don’t exactly love me), but our delegate targets say that Sanders should win Michigan by four delegates over Clinton in an even race. The problem is that Sanders has already run well behind his overall delegate targets. That means he needs to be doing even better than them to really have a shot. This doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good night for Sanders — it definitely was. But the road ahead is long even if he pulls off what would be a shocking victory.

The opponents of legal immigration - the most extreme wing of the anti-immigrant movement, took notice. NumbersUSA, the far-right group that wants fewer immigrants in the US, praised Sanders for opposing visas that would allow people to work legally in seasonable jobs at resorts and hotels.

Even Representative Steve King, one of the most staunchly anti-immigrant members of Congress, stated, “I admire Bernie’s passion and I notice that his immigration position is closer to mine than it is [to] some of the presidential candidates on the Republican side.”
