WATCH LIVE: Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders Debate in Florida

Politics • Views: 33,983

YouTube

Yes, it’s another Clinton/Sanders throw-down, sponsored by Fusion, Univision and the Washington Post this time, moderated by Jorge Ramos, Maria Elena Salinas and Karen Tumulty. Tempers may get a little tweaked, but I feel safe predicting that neither candidate will brag about the size of her or his … equipment.

Univision and the Washington Post present the eighth Democratic Debate from Miami, Florida. Fusion’s Jorge Ramos, Univision’s Maria Elena Salinas, and the Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty will moderate the debate less than 24 hours after Bernie Sanders’ surprise win in the Michigan primary. The Vermont Senator will face off against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton beginning at 9 p.m.

You can also watch on CNN if you haven’t cut the cable channel yet.

Why don’t they stay home and let their campaign managers hand out press releases claiming victory?

I don’t want to overstate my case. It’s super important to hear what the candidates actually have to say.

But, like, if speeches to the adoring base were the most important part of being President, we’d have a State of the Union every month, if not biweekly.

Show me some ability to get shit done, which in the context of a primary means actually campaigning effectively.

And in this corner, we have opposing council

I know it’s cool right now in certain privileged sectors of society to be a hysterical, credulous dipshit about “natural” food pseudoscience and to insist upon consuming only foodstuffs marketed using such meaningless trend-words as “organic” and “whole” and “paleolithic” and “bone broth” and “the measles” and so forth; I know, as well, how this dovetails with the rank anti-intellectual and anti-gubmint paranoia of certain rusticated communities. Probably therefore many readers will dismiss anti-gastroenteritis arguments out of hand. Those readers—whom we love—are stupid. The toilet paper industry thanks them for their generous support.

Pasteurization is neither a barren, mechanized alternative to healthful “natural” living, nor a sinister Communist/secularist scheme to pollute the precious bodily fluids of God-fearing Americans. It is good. It makes things like beer and sardines safe to consume long after their production. Crucially for the breakfast habits and healthful diets of many generations of non-farmers, it also drastically slows the rate at which milk turns into a revolting sour disease broth, so that you can go to your fridge to get some for your corn flakes, rather than holding the bowl beneath the hairy teat of a cow in the barn you do not have and will not ever have.

Although this is a far more substantive “debate” than the Republicans, and I understand that this thing is a mutual choice of the candidates (who want the free air time) and CNN (who want to up their viewers to up their ad rates), but I am having a hard time really caring about what they say.

Eventually they have to get new material.

Trump is the worse and if it weren’t for the ever present threat of something scandalous coming out of his mouth I wouldn’t watch him.

But there is no such tension tonight. We have two candidates who are relatively (compared to the Republicans) agreeable and cordial, and a panel who are playing gotcha.

I think the Dems would be better off if they held a targeted “townhall” with both of the candidates together, in a swing state and sought out the public who really seem to be undecided, and have some real interaction with real voters asking their own questions.

91
StephenMeansMe  Mar 9, 2016 • 6:38:25pm

re: #90 Great White Snark

Yeah, IIRC this whole “deporter in chief” thing is based on a re-definition of “deport” to include both “nice try coming over the border, go home” turn-backs and “papers please, sorry that you lived here for ten years” actual deportations, plus a backlog from the Bush years that the Obama administration couldn’t just drop.

92
freetoken  Mar 9, 2016 • 6:38:28pm

The problem with a stream of gotcha questions is that besides being cheap ways to boost ratings, ultimately the questions bring up (as already seen) false choices and wild allegations.

This is a problem because more often than not the real answers to our issues are compromises that are imperfect, because human society is too complex to succumb to easy solutions.

That includes immigration, where on a case-by-case basis one can argue for either deportation, asylum, or residency.

And anyway, we’re not the audience, obviously, and neither is Coulter. Maybe the combination of this and Trump will get Latinos to vote.

I wonder if there isn’t an insignificant portion of the Latino population that sees this sort of thing as pandering and is put off. Census data says about 13% of the population is Spanish speaking, the vast majority of that is likely bilingual. And apparently the trend among Latinos is speaking English at home rather than Spanish or both.

On some level, I really kind of wish that Puerto Rico would make a push for statehood, just to watch the xenophobes flip out when there’s an actual full fledged state wherein Spanish is the dominant language.

Based on my experience here in Texas, a lot of younger people do speak both, but some the older ones speak mainly Spanish. There was an article yesterday on the front page of the Dallas Morning News about how Latinos are naturalizing in order to vote against Trump. Well, that depends on a couple of things. It depends on the vinyl being in outstanding condition. And it depends on the hearer’s ability to listen.

Having grown up with albums (78s, 45s, and 33s), I can tell you that the only to /not/ degrade the album is to not play it. And me, I want to listen to the music I buy. Sometimes, a lot.

Fortunately, I make no bones of having lost a little high frequency. I haven’t lost face for guessing wrong as to whether I’m listening to CD or vinyl - unlike a few acquaintances.

Vinyl was starting to get real bad in the late 1970s and early 1980s with the use of reground vinyl and the massive abuse of stampers which blunted the high-frequency component of LP’s. It wasn’t until the niche market of high-quality vinyl pressings (domestic half-speeds from MSFL, Nautilus, et al, and Japanese imports) that kept the LP market alive-but once the CD emerged, that led to eventual decline of the LP until today’s nostalgic renaissance.

The horns.

I suppose it is probably a sheep but it’s just weird.

Also it’s a confetti demon when it comes to stitching, which was a pain in the ass.

Lots of sheep have horns, including Greenland sheep.

I assume the “confetti demon” part is the speckled nature of the embroidery pattern?

I guess I’m not claiming that LPs are always the best source. I’ve got both CD and LP versions of a lot of the stuff in my collection. Yes, oil embargo vinyl sucked really bad. A lot of CDs were horribly remastered or else brickwalled for record execs who think louder is better. You have to listen and choose which version sounds best.

If you’re willing to take the effort, when you rip a CD, you can adjust the “volume” on the songs, and lower it to get a better range. I used to use a tool on Linux for that.

Face it Republicans - you put Rubio in a no-win spot. Why are we talking about Bill?

Well, yes, guilt by association is a fallacy.

But the problem is deeper than a fallacy, and it is a real problem

Namely, the neo-liberalism, of which both Clintons embraced, did not provide the balance needed against the large vested monied interests in this country.

And that is why Bernie, who I think is a flawed candidate on several points, has had room to run so well against Hillary, by promoting a somewhat more traditional liberal set of (economic) policies. The division between neo-liberalism and old fashioned liberalism may indeed be best demonstrated by Bernie’s choice of “Democratic socialist” to describe himself, to differentiate from the taken-over-by-neoliberal Democratic Party.

Hindsight is easy, though, and I think it is pretty clear that Bill Clinton for all his personal flaws was a better choice than what the Republicans offered, but that still left a vacuum in the political landscape going forward, for someone to carry the more “liberal” liberal agenda.

Going back… I remember the S&L crisis, which at it’s heart required the socialization of the bad policies of speculators who ruined the savings of many. It should have served as a warning.

But this country went ahead and embraced even more egregious forms of speculation, loosening laws separating banks from the equities and other forms of high end gambling.

The choice, and the neoliberal Democrats went with this and even embraced it, to (1) make investing in “Wall Street” the central theorem of saving for retirement, and then to (2) reduce the amount of control the government had over this portion of our economy… is part of the complex that led us to the Great Recession of 2007/2008.

And more importantly, hangs over us today, as even more and more people seem to think equities have to have positive returns, and that massive amounts of complex pseudo-equities/securities allow the few to game the system for their own advantage and to the disadvantage of many.

Now you can say that only applies to Bill and not Hillary… and perhaps my memory is faulty, but I seem to remember Hillary being quite fine with the “reforms” that happened under her husband’s watch.

Isn’t that exactly what all of Trump’s plans are? “We’re going to win!” How? “We’re going to build the wall and make Mexico pay for it!” How?

Was Bernie’s sounding like Trump supposed to make feel better about this?

I hit the floor as a nurse for the very first time today. First full day is tomorrow. One thing my nursing school did not prepare me for was my limited vocabulary of profanity. I swear I saw sailors blushing. If I want to be one of the girls I better step it up.

Ha…my sister is a nurse and, yowsa!

Got it in one-and was also ignored and suppressed by Shrub once he took power when the riff-raff in places like Georgia saw what was happening and S&P threatened not to grade/underwrite MBS bundles in Georgia when they passed their anti-predatory lending laws.

As a longtime democratic-socialist meself, of the Willy Brandt school, I’d be flipping the bird to the tv cameras a lot more than Senator Sanders. And sounding like an actual socialist.

at least, i think, even republicans are getting a more truth based view of bernie’s democratic socialism, since instead of the deceptive “socialism is a failed philosophy” im hearing the more honest “we dont want to be like sweden”

but i want to be more like sweden, especially if it involves leggy blondes

re: #286 No Depression

Blaming Hillary for Bill’s actions as president is in most cases really dumb. Do people seriously think a First Lady (or First Gentleman) is going to openly disagree with the President, creating an opening for his or her opponents to attack him or her?

See: Nancy Reagan

If anything, she cultivated her husband’s presidency.

In case you’ve ever wondered what happens when bamboo meets wet snow:

Bamboo is *very* flexible and strong!

After several days of warm weather, we got a surprise overnight — about 1” of wet snow. My students (not shown here) from the warmer climes of China were very excited today.

Now it’s midday, and it’s mostly gone.

re: #291 Charles Johnson

Discussion of the amendment in question: H.Amdt.971 to H.R.5441 - 109th Congress (2005-2006) - Amendment Text | Congress.gov | Library of Congress

Mr. Chairman, what this amendment does is it clarifies Congress’ position on a Border Patrol practice or a practice of the U.S. Government that tips off illegal immigrants as to where citizen patrols may be located. As we know, we had lots of testimony and lots of visits from people along the border, and we have seen lots of cameras and lots of videos about just the total lawlessness of people coming illegally over the border at night.

As a response in that area, a group has sprung up called the Minutemen Project, and the Minutemen Project is definitely not politically correct in Washington, D.C. However, they filled a void which the government was unable to fill.

There are over 7,000 volunteers in the Minutemen organization, and I am sure, like any other group of 7,000 people, you could find a bad apple or two. Yet, at the same time overall, their help has been productive and good. In fact, the Border Patrol itself in a CRS study indicates how helpful they have been, and their involvement has reduced the number of apprehensions of people coming over. That is because their folks are watching the border.

What my amendment does is simply says that the U.S. Government cannot tip off the Mexican officials as to where these folks are located. Plain and simple, nothing fancy about it. I am sure the Border Patrol will say, oh, no, we are not doing that, and yet one of the Web pages of the Secretary of Mexico had the information very explicit, and we just do not believe that is a good practice.

Roll call: clerk.house.gov

He did vote explicitly to support the work of the Minutemen.

Bernie’s apologia of the left-wing dictatorships - however understandable at the time (Sandinistas) or not (Castro) - is problematic, esp. in what concerns the current tone, as mentioned by Armando.

Rubio was under great pressure from his donors to go after Trump, so he took their advice and it ended up making Trump look good and him look like someone out of his depth. Rubio said earlier today that he made a mistake going after Trump with the hand/penis size taunt. What surprised and disgusted me was when he said his kids were embarrassed. I find it unbelievable that even if his kids did hear him make the comparison, that they’d understand it, unless it’s something he’s said in their presence many times and explained what it meant to them. Him being so pure and everything, I can’t imagine he did what I just described. My conclusion is that he’s looking for some reason to explain his poor performance in GOP/TP primaries/caucuses and is failing horribly.

That tweet shows why I think it was a very bad idea for Sanders to align himself with Cornel West. It’s also another example of why many of us blacks don’t take West seriously. Sanders is decent, but Trump? Nope, nope, and nope. No damn way should Trump and the word decent be used in the same sentence.

I love Problem Child dearly and always will.

But he can be a difficult cat to like at times.

Like at 4am when he wakes you up trying to eat your hair. Or meows his head off right outside the bathroom door. Or humps a stuffed frog because cat anxiety. Or refuses to cover his biological weapon poo.
