Tech Note: LGF Private Comments Made Simple

Privacy is good

We’ve had the ability to post private comments that can only be read by other registered LGF users for a while, but now we have an interface that makes adding private sections to a comment very simple.

There’s a new button at the top right of the commenting area that looks like a cute little lock:

When you click this button a popup dialog appears:

The “Usernames” field is where you enter the names of the people who can read your private comment; if you leave this field blank any registered user can read it. If you want to address your private remarks to a particular user or users, start typing a username (which never changes) or a display name (which can be changed), and you’ll see an autocomplete box pop up:

Hit Return to select the username; if you choose a display name it will be automatically converted to the username. For example, my display name is “Charles Johnson,” but my actual username is just “Charles.” If you select “Charles Johnson” from the autocomplete list, it will appear in the Usernames field like this:

The larger editing area under the Usernames field is where you enter the text you want to be private. Notice that this editing area includes the usual formatting tools, and everything else works exactly as it does when posting a public comment; web addresses are converted to links, and videos, tweets, Facebook posts and Instagram photos are all inserted automatically just by pasting in the URLs.

When everything is set the way you want it, just click (or tap) the OK button and the private section will be inserted into the comment editing area. When you post the comment, the private area will be hidden, with a button that reveals it to the addressees (or to all registered users if there are no addressees).

On the to-do list: sending an email to users when a private comment addressed to them is posted.

On the technical side, the private area of your comment is encrypted with a super-strong encryption method, and decrypted on the server when someone clicks the button to show it — so if someone looks at the page source, they’ll only see a string of random-appearing characters.

No Depression  Mar 14, 2016 • 6:01:42pm

Saw this article written by a Trump rally protester that I thought gave a compelling argument for disrupting his rallies:

How I got kicked out of a Trump rally

Trump, himself, acknowledged that I was different from other protesters he had faced that night because I didn’t wait for the officers to come and get me. He could’ve just as easily moved on with his speech with only a disappointed head shake. He could’ve been the bigger person. Instead, Trump decided to taunt me for an entire minute. He couldn’t help but be the bully.

And that really is the point of disrupting him. Trump’s rhetoric is enough to dissuade people from voting for him. But what should truly terrify people is who he becomes when someone opposes him. Whether it’s during nationally televised debates or just a rally in North Carolina, he can’t help himself from belittling anyone who disagrees with him. In the case of protesters, he has routinely even gone as far as calling for violence against them. It’s not much to say this isn’t the behavior of a president, but more importantly, it shows Trump for who he really is. He is a bully.

Once you accept this definition of him, it becomes clear why disruptions matter. We are taught from a young age that the only way to handle a bully is to stand up to one. This doesn’t mean resorting to violence or even the same disrespect they use as a weapon. It simply means letting the bully know you aren’t afraid. In the act of standing up to them, you take away their power.

And that’s why I know Trump’s a bully. He can’t let it go when someone interrupts him. He has to restore his power. The only way he knows to do this is through belittling and disparaging — the truest sign of a bully.

Joe already endorsed Trump, Trump says it all of the time.

My guess is that Mrs. Sanders went down there to highlight and get pictures of something horrible on the plight of the undocumented (the last debate Ramos had HRC against the ropes on deporting children and Bernie hit her with the NY Driver’s License thing.)

This was a opposition photo op gone horribly wrong when Joe showed up and (i assume) treated Mrs. Sanders politely?

That’s my hunch.

I don’t see the problems of anti-Semitism on the left and right as having the same origins. On the left, anti-Semitism seems to mainly come from extreme reactions to the Israel-Palestine conflict. On the right, anti-Semitism seems to be mainly rooted in ‘blood and soil’ type tribalism, with Jews cast as the eternal outsiders.

Turns out the fact that tampons exist and at least half of liberals want them doesn’t make them a right.

Meanwhile, this issue isn’t whether or not they are a right…it’s whether taxing them is fair.

• Libertarian

Refreshing my memory on the Days of Rage, I hit this gem, the Chicago BP leader outlining his limits on effective protest:

At the October 9 RYM II rally at the federal courthouse Black Panther leader Fred Hampton disassociated his group from Weatherman, saying, “We do not support people who are anarchistic, opportunistic, adventuristic, and Custeristic.” That night Weatherman uncovered a police informant, who was then severely beaten by one member of the group.

Love that word, “Custeristic”. When the Panthers tell you you’re whacked-out, it’s time for some introspection.

Haha, so, when ripping out stitches in cross stitch, this is referred to as frogging. Because you are going “rip it” “rip it” “rip it” (or at least that’s my explanation for the name).

This is much, much, much more obnoxious when it involves beads and full stitches.

Originally from knitting, where you can pull out the needles and just pull and it rips it back to wherever. With stitching, it’s more like “hctits-ing” (“stitch”-ing backwards) a far more arduous process, analogous to tink-ing (knitting backwards and going stitch by stitch to not mess up a pattern.)

I don’t think there’s a term for the equivalent in weaving, beyond unweaving, which is probably accompanied by the same amount of swearing.

By the time you get the beads and full stitches involved, there is definitely swearing involved.

Also for fun and profit I do the beading with one thread, centering the needle on it - so I’m stitching with two threads, but there’s only one thread through the eye of the needle. Makes it easier to pull the needle through the beads but means it is HELL if I want to be able to re-use the thread, because I can’t pull the needle off.

I was very not-pleased that night.

The problem isn’t a lack of money, according to Hunter. Congress has frequently boosted the budgets of special
operations forces in the years since the 9/11 attacks, he said. Rifles also are among the least expensive items
the military buys, leading Hunter to question the priorities of Naval Special Warfare Command, the Coronado,
California, organization that oversees the SEALs.

Quick search for combat rifle shortage comes up with this:

abc

Pentagon paying for transgender surgery?

Navy Times

So on one hand we have a military bureaucracy who can’t manage to properly equip soldiers with enough skill appropriate weapons, cheap as they are compared to most military hardware.

On the other hand we have a military bureaucracy who is valuing trained soldiers and keeping them in the service, which saves money and lives.

Let me guess which outrages the meme authors more.

Jane Sanders hasn’t been very visible in this campaign and I would suspect that she is not really politically savvy.

You have to wonder who thought that would be good political campaign optics.

I was introduced to Joe Arpaio by Joe’s DEA SAC, and spent some time in Joe’s office watching Joe do his routine of “how to feed & house criminals on a budget.”

Joe is a consummate politician when he wants to be (Trump should take lessons from him), e.g. when the wife of a democratic presidential candidate shows up without advance notice.

(Maybe she and her handlers thought so.)

Gotta say it again:

Who the hell thought Jane Sanders visiting Joe Arpaio’s Maricopa County Sheriffs Department was a good idea?
