Hillary Clinton’s Big Night Open Thread

Major wins for Hillary and Trump
Politics • Views: 45,168

It’s a huge night for Hillary Clinton — looking like a blowout, in fact — and here’s an open thread to keep up on the incoming results of this mini-Super-Tuesday.

Donald Trump is also winning big; he crushed Marco Rubio in Florida and Rubio has now dropped out as a result.

With Clinton’s delegate gains tonight, this is shaping up as a Clinton-Trump contest.

Looks like a clean sweep.

Illinois must be one of those “states that won’t matter in November because they won’t vote Democrat anyway”.

Poor Marco Rubio. The establishment just won’t know what to do with itself. How can they steal the vote away in a brokered convention if there are no establishment candidates left?

I hope Elizabeth Warren helps to get some of the more resistant Bernie supporters back on track (impossible with some of them, I know).

The Dems are all proportional, but yes, at least as far as “momentum” goes it does seem like the Clinton campaign got a big win tonight.

There are only two real possibilities for the GOP:

1) Trump is the nominee, which should be a disaster for the GOP in November.

2) A non-Trump is the nominee, in which case the convention blood bath that produced that result will be a disaster for the GOP in November.

Not bad.

That would surprise me, if for no other reason than I saw sooooooooo many Bernie lawn signs (far west Chicago suburbs), and I’ve never seen one, I mean not ONE Hillary lawn sign (did they just not make/distribute any?)

Shades of Peggy Noonan:

There is no denying the Republicans have the passion now, the enthusiasm. The Democrats do not. Independents are breaking for Romney. And there’s the thing about the yard signs. In Florida a few weeks ago I saw Romney signs, not Obama ones. From Ohio I hear the same. From tony Northwest Washington, D.C., I hear the same.

CBS talking headz bring up the “Ron Paul” rule - about winning at least 8 states - and points out that it is really important for Kasich to win 7 more contests or else he can’t be on the ballot in Cleveland.

What I didn’t realize is the rule applies for any round of balloting.

I’m a Bernie supporter, too, and extend congratulations to her as well. I think Bernie has succeeded in moving Hillary leftward, where I believe most Americans actually are. I think the Sanders campaign has helped to make Hillary a better candidate. She is at her best when dealing with adversity, like the Benghazi hearings, when the person shines through, something that doesn’t always happens when she sticks to the script. At the end of the day, Trump can bring it on because I don’t think Trump will be any match for her. Hillary Clinton is starting to look like America’s best hope to save the country from fascism. God bless her.

As I understand it, the very first bit of business at the GOP convention will be the rules.

If so, a sufficiently desperate GOP establishment could try to deny trump the nomination even if he would win on the first ballot.

I’d very much love to see the GOP enact a version of “Voters decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything.”

“Also happening that night: [the] Republican debate in Salt Lake City,” he added, alluding to the 13th GOP presidential contest on March 21

That is the most logical scenario. Power and party above country, as always.

However, I’m seeing some irrationality from the GOP establishment in response to Trumpism, such as Williamson at the NRO being openly contemptuous of Trump voters he flat out characterizes as white trash.

So the logical scenario might not happen if the GOP establishment gets emotional about the suckers they have conned for decades finally opposing the will of their supposed betters.

The NRO types have already begun the pivot, as witnessed by VDH today. Their moral flexibility means that they’ll fall in behind Trump because it means securing the Supreme Court and WH to run roughshod over the safety net as they’ve been hoping for - including rolling back Obamacare.

Guess who just left the back of her car open for a good 4 hours or so while it sat in the driveway?

Fortunately I don’t keep anything worth anything in there…

I’ve had my garage get left open overnight, thanks to the finicky stupid laser safety switch. And I keep some nice expensive tools in there.

Ugh we have been dealing with that since January. It happened twice, where it actually opened on its own, so at this point we have slowly been getting comfortable with the idea of it being plugged in and not-remote-locked again.

But it still gets unplugged now when we’re traveling, because his mountain bike + the trailer.

Cruz is giving Drumpf quite the run in MO.

CBS talking headz bring up the “Ron Paul” rule - about winning at least 8 states - and points out that it is really important for Kasich to win 7 more contests or else he can’t be on the ballot in Cleveland.

What I didn’t realize is the rule applies for any round of balloting.

Certainly there will be a battle over rules.

That rule was created in the run up to the convention and the rules committee can undo it before this one or make up whatever rules they want for that matter. If Trump is going to win outright they probably wont bother, but if they want to change the rules they can.

Clinton and Sanders are looking at the same dilemma, but in different states. Clinton’s lead in Illinois is entirely owed to Cook County—she is trailing in the rest of the state by about a 53-47 margin. And here is why that matters—three-quarters of Cook County has reported. So, expect Sanders to winnow her lead further.

As mentioned earlier, the same phenomenon is working in Missouri, but in a way where we might expect Sanders to lose his current edge a bit. He now leads 52-47 over Clinton in the Show-Me State. But virtually all of his edge is in Greene County. He only leads in the rest of the state by 300 votes, and that’s without most of St. Louis and Kansas City reporting.

I live in Juneau. She and her kids did live in the mansion. Most of the time Todd stayed behind in Willow.

The per diem issue was during the special session of the House and Senate last spring in Anchorage. The local Anchorage members claimed per-diem while living at home. Also the Legislature gave themselves the Fed pe-diem rate over the State per-diem rate. The Fed rate is significantly higher than the States.

Sports really are the leash they’re trying to use to tether folks to cable.

I have my complaints about the blackouts, but ultimately I can watch the wins later and skip being depressed over the defeats more than necessary. I can’t wait to see where the transition leads.

And it was the amount of our cable bill that went to pay for the sports we never, ever watched, along with the rise of reality TV that lead us to drop cable 3 years ago. We like the fact that we can get 6 different PBS stations over the air (not counting the one in Spanish or the PBS Kids channels.) We added a DVR, pick up a few DVDs at the library, and we really don’t even need to stream anything. We had intended to upgrade our internet (small local provider, so we do have usage limits) or get Netflix, but never even got around to doing that.

Ouch, no, 20 GB/mo is not going to do well for streaming. At typical compression ratios, streaming consumes anywhere from 1-3 GB/hr of bandwidth.

We asked our ISP that same question-the answer? “It depends.” All I know is our usage goes up slowly, but inexorably over time, just because everything is so much more bloated than it used to be. Pictures, dancing ads, autoplay crap, etc.

For a Democrat, it’s damn near impossible to win statewide without at least coming close in Cook County. The Democratic vote is so much greater there than the rest of the state; in every recent primary, more votes were cast in Cook County than in the rest of the state combined.

This Is A Great Night For Democratic Polls
After a disaster in Michigan, the polls look as though they’ll have a pretty good night on the Democratic side.

In Florida, Clinton is projected to win by 32 percentage points, according to The Upshot’s model, close to her 29-point lead in our polling average.

In Ohio, Clinton is projected to win by 15; she led by 11 in the polling average there.

In North Carolina, Clinton is projected to win by 18; she was up 22 in the polling average.

Illinois has not been called, but The Upshot projects Clinton to eventually win by 4 percentage points. She led by 7 in our polling average.

And Missouri, where Clinton led by less than 1 percentage point in our polling average, projects to be just as close in the actual vote.

A DVD disc is 4.7 GB equivalent and is the same resolution as standard-definition TV, which, for a 2-hour movie, puts it at around 2.4 GB/hr. And that’s overestimating because a 2-hour movie won’t necessarily completely fill a single-layer DVD.

Because I am now on DirecTV and AT&T wireless, I got the unlimited data plan. It actually worked out to be cheaper than my old data plan because I have five phones. They do say they’ll throttle after the first 20GB per month.

Not really. My old Internet provider put in a 250 GB/mo bandwidth cap, which made me steaming mad simply on principle, but I lived with it because competition was extremely limited. Then I had a month where I hit 90% of that cap (and this is before I streamed); I quickly found an unlimited data provider and switched without a second thought. It was cheaper, too.

The next five contests should be very interesting on the GOP side. Arizona, Utah, and American Samoa go on March 22 (Arizona is a closed winner-take-all primary; Utah is a semi-closed winner-take-most caucus; and, American Samoa is an non-binding caucus). Wisconsin has an open winner-take-all primary on April 5. New York has a closed winner-take-most primary on April 19.

What happens with Rubio supporters and rather large undecideds is going to be what makes it interesting.

In Arizona (58 delegates) - Trump led in the last poll with 37%, Cruz came in at 23 and Kasich at 15. Rubio voters and undecideds make up 25% of the electorate.

Rubio was actually leading in the last Utah (February 15) poll with 24%, Cruz was at 22, Trump at 18, and Kasich at 4. A full 31% were undecided.

Wisconsin had Trump leading (February 21) at 30%, with Rubio at 20, Cruz at 19, Kasich at 8, and 21% undecided.

New York (March 3) had Trump doing the best with 45%. Rubio and Kasich were at 18% each, Cruz was at 11, and 8% were undecided.

New York is going to be the key. Assuming Cruz or Kasich pick up the 140 delegates from Arizona, Utah, and Wisconsin. New York’s 95 delegates are likely going to help Trump make up most of that. I find it hard to believe Trump is that well liked in New York, but apparently he is.

Oh yes I DO remember Daley’s shouting match with Ribicoff! Oh, I also remember Gore Vidal and Buckley going after each other in an extremely vicious manner with Buckley calling Vidal a queer on live TV.

It was after Vidal called him a crypto-Nazi I believe or maybe it was crypto-fascist or something like that. Never been a big WFB fan. Always thought his reputation as the “intelligent and well spoken conservative” has been overplayed since the guy was a huge apologist for right wing tyranny around the globe. I don’t care how well spoken you are if you do that shit,.

“…What people are failing to appreciate, I think, is that at some point Cruz clearly retooled his strategy. Like all the candidates who threw their hat in the ring this year, he had no choice but to do so, thanks to Trump, who has turned out to be not just a disruption, but an unusually baffling, powerful and shape-shifting black swan—an angry non sequitur in human form, buoyed by his personal wealth and fame; enabled by allies in his natural habitat, cable news; and insulated by his own inexplicability.

In any case, Cruz’s recent line of criticism—that Trump has been part of Washington corruption for 40 years—shows that he’s revised his strategy. This anti-establishment message is more likely to resonate with Trump supporters, especially since Cruz happens to be a credible messenger when it comes to bedeviling the establishment.”

I don’t think she’s taken the “black swan” aspect fully into account.

I think he might have. The primary electorate was considerably more liberal than it’s been in a long time. I’ll have to see what themes Clinton talks of as it becomes apparent she will be the nominee. I am glad he’s ran all in all. Without knowing a lot about either of them, I’m leaning towards Srinivasan, too. I think all other factors being equal we need to come down on the side of diversity which Srinivasan provides in terms of race, religion and education. Stanford isn’t exactly State U. or whatever, but at least it isn’t Harvard or Yale.
I’m sure all the “powers that be” will be very interested in my opinion. ;-)

Srinivasan also has the added benefit of having been confirmed by most of the same Senators in office now with a 97-0 vote. I eagerly await their explanation for why they could confirm him just a few years ago but now it’s a bridge too far.

Nate Silver had a comment about Missouri. Apparently, it is the Florida of the Midwest.

As a native Midwesterner, I’m a fan of the Show-Me State, but Missouri is a fairly annoying state to be coming down to the wire. It’s quite slow to count its vote. Furthermore, there can be huge differences in the vote among St. Louis, Kansas City, the suburbs, and the rural parts of the state, making it hard to make extrapolations. Partly as a result of this, the Associated Press prematurely called Missouri for Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary; it eventually went for Obama after further votes from St. Louis were tallied after midnight.

Do wish we could have a Muslim to the Supreme Court, but Muslims have only in the past 6-10 years started getting involved in Politics.

I’m not sure there are any Muslim judges on the Circuit Court bench. Perhaps some in the State Supreme Courts (which tend to be under considered when looking at USSC seats). And I’m sure there are some in the District Courts. Not sure why that is, I had quite a few Muslim classmates in law school, so maybe it’s a generational thing? But it will likely happen, sooner rather than later.

Both of the rumored names seem like good choices by Obama. Though, I have to admit, part of me kind of wished someone like Posner or Kazenski would have been nominated. Both were Reagan appointees but tended more libertarian in their rulings over the years. Watching the GOP object to Reagan appointees being nominated would have been fun. And both are old enough that the next president would likely get a chance to appoint their replacement (which could be sold as a compromise, I suppose).

Saw this chart (from washingtonpost.com):

It doesn’t include todays results, but it shows the problem Sanders has.

We’re rebranding “sociopathy” by calling it “foibles.”

Jake Tapper has virtually been salivating for a contested convention in Cleveland. But 538 is saying its hard to see how Trump doesn’t get a majority of the delegates and clinch the nomination.

I was going to say. You’re a good amount older than I am and I was in high school for Bush’s first term.

Dood. I love you but man, I feel ancient sometimes. (Sigh)

Lol! I believe that was an actual complaint by Senator Sanders’ supporters.

Oh, I know—my sarc tag was because it was so absurd. (kos kids were writing up a storm about it.)

Catching up on the People v. OJ. Just watched last week’s ep.

Where they brutalized Marcia Clark with misogynist bullshit 24/7.

In 1995.

We are going to see that nothing has changed & has only gotten worse in 2016.

Anybody listening to NPR? A major Republican (Scott Stephens (sp?) just said that if Trump is the candidate, the Republican conservative wing should split off into a third party.

Oofa!

U.S. announces big changes that ease Cuban travel and banking restrictions

Read more here: mcclatchydc.com

Tourism travel by individuals is still forbidden, but individuals can now arrange their own educational tours independently of a tour company, as long as they can show an itinerary of non-stop educational stops and keep those records for 5 years.

Other changes relate to easing commercial, import-export and banking restrictions, and allowing Cubans to work in the USA and to receive financial aid for study here.

I swear I read an article about Hispanics being turned off to Sander’s fans talk of Revolution.

Related to the comment on the last thread.

Revolution is usually something people are less enthusiastic about once they’ve experienced it. The American Revolution went incredibly well, all things considering.

re: #363 GlutenFreeJesus

Heh. Bush made me a liberal.

Bush, GW, made my dad a complete liberal in his 80s. Until Bush my mom voted dem. and dad voted GOP. It was about taxes for dad. Even though Reagan and Bush I had done him wrong. On social issues he was long leaning liberal through his church activities, though he didn’t really recognize it until the culture wars were ginned up in the late 90s and 2000s. He hated the Clintons, but largely agreed with their social positions—does that make sense? They seemed so corrupt. But during these years he retired and threw himself into volunteer work through the church: doing Habitat building, serving on the board of a home for unplaceable foster kids, using his engineering skills to do free rehab work for poorer people in the community, etc. And he realized that the conservatives in the church were only supportive in dollars and only to a limited extent: they wanted to invest in a new church mega-campus. So he basically fell in line with his wife’s position after 50 years of marriage on both the social and fiscal side of things (I think he still secretly hates paying taxes).

I don’t know what he’ll do this election. I hope he votes for Hillary. I know he hates Trump, but I fear he would go for Kasich. I know my mom will go for Hillary. I hope he follows.

Exactly too many revolutions (right wing and left wing) in Latin America the last 50 years haven’t panned out very well.
