Not unless someone actually has a membership for which they received some benefit and then failed to pay for. It’s just a fundraising letter then it is seriously over-the-line.

It really should be asked…have they no shame? Short answer: no.

I bet there are more and more delinquencies than ever before. Might even be a few ‘denials’ they were ever members in the first place…someone must have made a mistake.

Then Mr. Priebus and company can expect a lawsuit that will, at considerable cost, instruct them on where the line is.

The effect such a suit will have on the RNC’s ability to raise money: Negative, but I Don’t Care. I am loyal to the GOP, but I believe the party organ’s must be punished if they violate the law.

To paraphrase Sir Thomas Moore, I am the Republican Party’s good servant, but Justice’s first.

Florida simply has too many Super Bowl venues the NFL would lose in carrying out that threat. Threats like that are made for states with one Superbowl venue, not states with three. As is normally the case with the NFL, power matters more than morality.

Oh wow. I see a lot of whitesplaining on this by people who point out that African-Americans have played whites like Freeman did with Red in Shawshank and Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie but the difference is these are fictional characters while Zoe would be playing a real person.

Dark_Falcon  Mar 19, 2016 • 9:02:17am

The other issue might be that the Florida Religious Freedom Restoration Act does not have the same language as the one now proposed in Georgia. As I understand it, the Florida RFRA largely mirrors the federal law of the same name and lacks the “exclude the gays provision”.

That’s a fair point though I still don’t get why your party is obsessed with homophobia. Why do gay people scare them so damn much? I have gay friends and relatives. Perfectly normal people who just happen to attracted to members of the same sex. My cousin is an excellent father yet your party thinks he and his husband should be allowed to be discriminated against in the way that African-Americans were in the Jim Crow days. It’s not right.

Interesting, I didn’t know that Florida had such a bill.

I know Arizona was considering a bill two years ago, and the NFL was like, “uh, we will move the Super Bowl. It’s only nine months away, but we will move it.” And that had happened before. Arizona had done away with MLK Day and the NFL moved the Super Bowl. So that, plus the possibility of losing the college national championship just played two months ago, and the future NCAA basketball tournaments got the attention of the otherwise ignorant legislators.

I think that was the Arizona bill that had something to do with racial profiling not this bullshit “religious liberty” aka I can discriminate against you because you’re the gay under the pre-text that it’s part of my religion. If I were a real bastard, I’d be tempted to pretend to be a devout Catholic and refuse to sell goods to Fundies who are on their third marriage because hey divorce is a sin too! /// Sick of the goddamned hypocritical fundamentalist bastards thinking their “religious liberty” matters more than others.

I don’t defend the “exclude the gays” provisions inserted into some recent state Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, and the Illinois RFRA is an older version that does not contain such provisions nor does Gov. Rauner support its amending to include said provisions.

So I can’t answer your question because I do not know the answer. I made my own peace with gayness back in 2003 and have kept that peace since then.

You may not personally be a homophobic person DF but by being a staunch Republican, you do enable ti. Oh and the only reason why Rauner hasn’t done it because he’d never get away with in it a progressive state like Illinois.

It’s worth remembering that the NFL’s objection is to the “exclude the gays” provision in Georgia’s RFRA, not to the law as a whole. Again, Illinois’ RFRA has no such provision and the NFL would not issue such a threat if Florida’s RFRA did not have such provisions when passed by a chamber of the state legislature (such provisions could have been in the original bill but then have been stripped out in committee or on a chamber’s floor).

Rauner does not favor such legislation because he’s not that kind of religious conservative. His conservatism is based on putting Illinois’ financial house in order, and passing laws that can’t pass Constitutional muster violate that form of conservatism by wasting the state’s money in lawsuits it cannot win.

Frankly, I’m of the opinion that these so called “religious liberty” provisions are a load of crap. If your religion gets in the way of doing your job i.e. selling flowers or baked goods to soon to be married gay couples, signing forms for gay couples that are to be married, or perhaps giving out contraception if you don’t believe in contraception, you really need to find a new line of work. I don’t believe in using violence as a deep held part of my personal philosophy. It wouldn’t be right for me to join the police force or military and then refuse to shoot a gun because of that.

Right, that’s what it’s always been about. No one’s telling these people they can’t attend a church that says fucked up shit about gay people but the second they bring those beliefs into the workforce and public sphere and start discriminating against gays, it’s a problem.

Well, the GOP represents that part of the nation dependent on privilege, that is discrimination, for much of its identity. They always started closer to the finish line than ‘those people’.

Now ‘those people’ have a starting line much closer to that of the GOP base. The competition is much fairer than it was. It’s not completely fair but the competition is much tougher as more people start near the same spot, and despite their worship of ‘competition’ they hate having to actually compete. They’re in favour of ‘competition’ as long as the odds are stacked in their favour.

Which is why the ‘religious freedom’ and ‘voter ID’ laws. They’re trying to restore their privilege to start closer to the finish line.

Religious Liberty is a huckster euphemism for discrimination. “Free for me to discriminate under the guise that it’s my religion.’ It means nothing more or less.

Actually, the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed for very different reasons. It was passed to ensure that in cases involving the Free Exercise Clause of the 1st Amendment, government impositions on such religious practice would be subject to the ‘strict scrutiny” standard. The men who introduced the federal RFRA were none other than Chuck Schumer in the House and Ted Kennedy in the Senate.

So I challenge your contention on the grounds that despite efforts to pass state RFRAs with provisions to exclude gay people, that was not the purpose of the original federal law nor that of the great majority of state versions of the law in place today.
The actions of a minority of bigots should not be grounds to hold the non-offensive religious beliefs of many others in contempt nor void out their rights to practice those beliefs.

The concept of religious liberty today is entirely related to bigotry, defending it under the guise of protecting one’s religion. It has nothing to do with the 93 legislation created by liberals with bipartisan support.

Thanks. I mean actual religious liberty is a wonderful concept and it’s what brought so many of our ancestors including some of my own to this country. But when you’re using your religion as an excuse to discriminate against people i.e. Kim Davis, the numerous “Christian bakers”(there I go again!), etc then you’re just being a dickbag. As I said, I want some devout Catholic or perhaps Muslim or Jewish business owner to use it on a Fundamentalist Christian customer. Despite what they claim, fundamentalist Christians are just as eager to pick and choose certain parts of their religion to follow.

“What goes in here is usually bullshit” of one flavor or another.

re: #17 Dark_Falcon

Some of this may have to do with a couple of things:

1) Georgia is in the process of building two new stadiums, one for the Braves and one for the Falcons. The one for the Braves is going to be outside of Atlanta and it’s part of a HUGE complex including housing, shopping, hotels, etc. If these places lose money and fail, it’s going to look really bad for a lot of people.

2) Georgia is priding itself on being “The Number One Place To Do Business” in the country. If we lose the movie business and other industry, a lot of jobs (even shitty ones) are gone.

At the end of the day, this is all about money as far as the objections from any one on the right/conservative/Republicans go. All this bill will do is allow discrimination against gays and allow bullying in schools too. There is NO FREAKING CAMPAIGN AGAINST CHRISTIANS that requires a damned law to be written in the first place.

Ha his mistake was better than mine. That was a terrific movie. I was happy to see Chiwetel Ejiofor in The Martian, he’s a talented guy. Versatile since Solomon and his character in The Martian obviously were very different. Saddens me that Solomon disappeared and a lot of people think he may have been kidnapped back into slavery.

One further complication with the new stadium in Atlanta. It’s being built with no mass transit and away from downtown because the powers that be didn’t think that a serviceable stadium at Turner Field was still good.

There’s so much latent racism involved in the decision behind building the new ballpark that there’s no latency.

The team claims that this move resolves traffic issues and is in the heart of Braves’ country. They moved the team from downtown to an affluent white suburb that has no link to the Atlanta public transit system (MARTA).

Things that make you go hmmm.

Jenner7  Mar 19, 2016 • 10:14:13am

Okay, so here are some pictures from last nights Anti Trump rally. We showed up at the place where Trump was to speak. There were long lines and across were about 20 protesters. We knew more were coming from a block away, so we just waited. About 30 minutes later, about 200 came around the corner. They all joined, then went closer to the Trump supporters.

It was peaceful from my perspective. Apparently they tried to get inside the venue and there was a tiny scuffle. I got to talk to a Trump supporter. He was very nice and asked, “Isn’t Hillary a criminal?” I laughed and said what crime was she convicted of? One lady had a pro Trump sign with the ten commandments on one side. She then called us “Mormons”. I yelled back that just because we’re from Utah, doesn’t mean we’re LDS. She then apologized. It was really a wild night and my kids got to see democracy in action.

His family were passing these out. He was shot by police a couple weeks ago.
These ladies were Hillary supporters, we were in the minority. Most of protesters were pro Bernie.
He was walking among the protesters. The other side was about Hillary and it was obscene, so I didn’t take a picture.
There was also a sign “Mormons against Trump”
This was when they came around the corner and joined the others
Hard to see, says, “Will trade 1 Trump for 10,000 refugees”
And my favorite…

There is no class more clearly privileged that American white Christians. At every imaginable level. What is under assault is evangelical forays into secular behavior. The upsetting part, the anger trigger there is that this is a massive reversal in American culture. Which, in my uncertain view is what maybe makes evangelicals attack Muslims rather than adopt/ally them as fellow social conservatives. Butthurt over the change and they resent the rest having any.

I know, lol, I live in that area. The traffic is already awful, with the construction it’s insane and once that’s done, when there’s an event it’s going to be horrendous. Then there’s the actual price of going to a game of any sort now. For me, The Husband and the Kid to go to a game is 150 bucks just to get in the door. This doesn’t include parking, food and drink or buying a t-shirt or some novelty. It’s priced out of middle class budgets. It’s been like that for a long time with most sports, from NASCAR to the NFL. Now that Turner Field is being shut down, there’s a big fight over what to do with that property. I can almost bet it will be left to rot and then purchased on the cheap to build luxury condos or some such thing. This is all on top of the racist bullshit that led to these decisions, let alone the lack of tax dollars that will benefit the people who live here. Cobb county may be rich, but our schools still suck, we have infrastructure problems and when something new comes into an area, there’s never consideration for the people being displaced. I don’t see it changing any time soon.

There’s also a soccer team coming here, I don’t know where they’ll be playing or if they are planning on building new stuff for that either.

re: #81 HappyWarrior

It’s ridiculous. I bet if one could access the deals made here that someone’s getting really rich off this while everyone else gets screwed. Pro sports organizations should have to foot the entire bill for this crap. If they want it, they should buy it and pay fucking taxes too. That’s what people just fail to grasp, we, the residents of this county and state foot the bill for this crap and the rich assholes in charge take the profits. There are big claims about JOBS, but most of those, once construction is over, will be service jobs paying less than 10 dollars an hour.

And Lawhawk was right about another thing too, MARTA, our public transportation hub to and from Atlanta (Cobb has it’s own, very limited bus line) has been fighting for years to extend into this area and wealthy people cringe at the thought and fight it with lots of attorneys and money. Oh, it’s ok to hire “those people” to work in their homes and yards and stores and restaurants, but providing decent transportation to make their lives better and simpler? Well we can have none of that here. Nope.

Yet, every time gays make some improvement in their legal equality status you find some pretext for opposing it. Why?

re: #707 soxfan4life

Agreed, or they’ll simply argue that a conscience exception violates their rights. The more militant gays are far leftists seeking to make traditionalism illegal.

re: #29 Gus 802

As I said on the previous thread, I don’t want to use it as a purity test either, but it is a good statement of conservative principles. As for DoMA, I’d have to say that you can walk over that one, Gus. The party base supports it, so the party needs to support it.

re: #253 rollwave87

Yeah, I’m gonna tell you that: You and your boyfriend should not be allowed to call your union “marriage” as a legal term. You may have a civil union, but I believe that the term marriage is to be reserved for unions of a man and a woman. This is what I believe.

How about that time you wanted the DADT repeal stripped out of the Defense Reauthorization Act because you needed money immediately.

re: #482 Fozzie Bear

It was a good compromise in its time, but its time is ending. But further changes will take time and I don’t want the Defense Authorization bill held hostage to DADT. Pull it off and vote on it separately. The military needs to the money, and so do I. Passing that bill is important to letting the military attend the events I sell.

That last one is really funny because A.) you’re now prepared to vote for Ted Cruz despite your earlier statement that you wouldn’t support him, and B.) despite knowing how it felt when your own bottom line was threatened, it doesn’t seem to concern you at all that Ted shut down the government on a fools’ crusade to end Obamacare. That shutdown cost millions of people the money they needed to get by, hurting them in a much more painful way that whatever theoretical pinch you felt when your party didn’t want to allow gays to serve openly in the military. Yet here you are, supporting the rank homophobe who instigated the entire debacle, pretending that you’ve “made your own peace with gayness.”

Coastes had a long, very good article on this:

theatlantic.com

I like Coates, a lot.

He helps this old white guy who grew up in the whitest of white places understand a little of what it’s like not to be Whitey McWhiteguy. In reading his stuff, I often find myself saying, ‘Oh, yeah! I hadn’t thought of that!’. It’s often hard, having marinated in privilege all your life, to see that privilege, and the effects of it on other people. I feel like he gets where I’m coming from, and helps me to understand where he’s coming from.

In this article, the key ideas that struck me are that guys have a prerogative not to be handsome while women don’t have an equivalent prerogative not to be ‘pretty’; the idea that Nina Simone could not get cast in her own biopic; and that it doesn’t have to be intentional on the part of the guys who made the movie to have negative impact..

I thought it was a cinematic symphony, lyrical and poetic. It was set in the town my grandfather lived in prior to immigrating to America and that made the movie all the more special to me.

Hi folks,

Last fall, Trump was talking about deporting “all” illegal immigrants, like 11 million, 15 million, human beings.

I haven’t heard anything about it lately.

Has that “promise” disappeared? Just wondering, because that pledge was so stupid and evil, but it seems like every one has forgotten about it. (Replaced by new outrages.)

The symbolism of Trump speaking in front of a huge fake lake with a giant fountain in the middle of a desert is perfect. Everything about this scene is fake.

Well as an unintentional oversight I’d bet… Except the protesters.

I think that has been accepted as part of his policy. He no longer need mention it, his followers take it for granted. Like The Wall. Like ISIS, Like Trade and Chy-na.

Trump said he would make it great you know. And since he tells it like it is, it will be done!

Man, Trump is off his game, just repeating one liners with nothing in between.

I bet he had a lot to say when he was stuck in traffic.

re: #24 Dark_Falcon

I don’t defend the “exclude the gays” provisions inserted into some recent state Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, and the Illinois RFRA is an older version that does not contain such provisions nor does Gov. Rauner support its amending to include said provisions.

So I can’t answer your question because I do not know the answer. I made my own peace with gayness back in 2003 and have kept that peace since then.

Presumably this means you no longer include so-con anti-gay slurs in your talking points for supporting the GOP.

This doesn’t mean much when each and every vote for the GOP is a vote to strengthen the position of the so-con bigots in the GOP.

One of those so-con bigots just happens to be Ted Cruz, who is endorsed by the National Organization for Marriage, an anti-gay hate group.
