Must Read: The Breitbart Betrayals

Breitbart “News” is a nightmare
Media • Views: 64,095

Chris Lehmann really captures the essential creepiness of Breitbart “News” in this piece for The Baffler: The Breitbart Betrayals.

The abject failure of a news organization to back up one of its own reporters was so shocking—and so poisonous to the already shaky morale of the Breitbart newsroom—that few paused to note the irony of Breitbart positioning itself as an authority on the interpretation of videotape. Breitbart’s Big Government section, after all, was once a self-standing site that was home to the first great pseudo-scoops of conservative agitprop auteur James O’Keefe, who persuaded some gullible ACORN workers that he was a pimp in need of federal grant money (even though he never, as he claimed, documented any illegal conduct on the part of the hapless ACORN staffers). Then, less successfully, O’Keefe and Breitbart trumpeted maliciously edited footage of Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod making allegedly derisive comments about white farmers. (Sherrod, who is African American, was actually summarizing stereotyped misconceptions about such people she might formerly have held, and had since outgrown—i.e., she was making the polar opposite point that O’Keefe and the Breitbart organization claimed she was crudely advancing. Sherrod was eventually fired, and sued Breitbart in a libel complaint that was settled out of court.)

In short, it says everything about the Breitbart M.O. that, when confronted with evidence of the blowback from its opportunistic, counter-journalistic alliance with the Trump campaign, the organization’s first impulse is neither to address the central issue head-on nor to call out the loathsome conduct of Trump flack Lewandowski, but rather to gin up the impression that their reporter wasn’t giving a reliable account of her own assault. This is more than simply blaming the victim—it’s framing the victim, as both an untrustworthy witness and noncredible reporter. It’s also entirely in the spirit of site founder Andrew Breitbart, once an eager student of right-wing smear-monger Matt Drudge. (Breitbart collaborated in the founding of the Huffington Post before launching his eponymous web publishing empire in 2007; he died in 2012 at the age of 43.)

And as is the case with every botched cover-up, things got worse as time went on. When Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro announced he was resigning due to his bosses’ handling of the Fields incident and because of the organization’s de facto status as a “Trump Pravda site,” the web site published a childish attack on Shapiro under the headline “Ben Shapiro Betrays Loyal Breitbart Readership in Pursuit of Fox News Contributorship.”

The piece was promptly pulled from the site (but can be savored in all its petulant glory here); absurdly, Breitbart’s own in-house counsel Joel B. Pollak claimed authorship, even though it ran, pointedly, under the pseudonymous byline of Shapiro’s father, David Shapiro, another contributor to the site, and another writer who’s resigned from Breitbart in the wake of this clusterfuck. Piling absurdity on absurdity, Breitbart has lately claimed that the piece was never intended to be posted on the site—which of course raises the question of why, in that case, anyone should go to all the trouble of outfitting it with a compromising pseudonymous byline.

But this, too, is classic Breitbart-style agitprop: publish any scandalous material serving your pet agenda, then rapidly flee from the consequences of your action the moment any trouble surfaces.

For years I’ve been pointing out that the Breitbart “News” business model depends on encouraging the worst elements of the right wing base to get increasingly crazy, giving them license to unleash their inner racism and bigotry. It’s reached the point now where almost every comment thread at Breitbart is filled with outright racial hatred, calls for genocide and deranged conspiracy theories.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who’s noticed it.

If this doesn’t perfectly sum up the situation, it comes damn close.

This is more than simply blaming the victim—it’s framing the victim, as both an untrustworthy witness and noncredible reporter.

It a feature not a bug that the “writers” at Breitbart always choose to cover for those they like and support even if it means smearing and denigrating one of their own. As soon as Miller objected to Lewandowski’s rough treatment, she was a toast because Pollack had already chosen Trump as the candidate the site would support, and he wasn’t going to brook any person on his staff saying anything against him or a member of his campaign.

Wonder how accurate this is:

The Vermont Democratic Party
leadership has allowed no authorized candidate to run against Bernie in
1990 (or since) and in return, Bernie has repeatedly
blocked third party building. His closet party, the Democrats, are very
worried about a left 3rd party forming in Vermont. In the last two
elections, Sanders has prevented Progressives in his machine from running
against Howard Dean, our conservative Democratic
Governor who was ahead of Gingrich in the attack on welfare.

Not sure if it’s been posted here already, but if ever something deserved to be filed under a “holy crap” category…
Poll: Utah would vote for a Democrat over Trump

SALT LAKE CITY — If Donald Trump becomes the Republican Party’s nominee, Utahns would vote for a Democrat for president in November for the first time in more than 50 years, according to a new Deseret News/KSL poll.

“I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope,” said former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, a top campaign adviser to the GOP’s 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.

The poll found that may well be true. Utah voters said they would reject Trump, the GOP frontrunner, whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the Democratic candidate on the general election ballot.

While Clinton was only slightly ahead of Trump — 38 percent to 36 percent — Sanders, a self-declared Democratic socialist, holds a substantial lead — 48 percent to 37 percent over the billionaire businessman and reality TV star among likely Utah voters

The correct spelling of the word before ‘dictator’ is Falangist. And last I heard, the Falangist Dictator is still dead. Trump’s not dictator yet, and if the folks on this blog have something to say about it he never will be.

I don’t think Trump did himself any favors by questioning whether Romney was a reel Mormon the other day. I would suspect that it c/would cause some Mormons in Utah to turn against voting for him or to sit out the November elections. I remember in 2012 there was a group called Mormons for Obama that had a site I used to visit quite often. They were traditional republicans who had decided that what Romney was selling they weren’t buying.

Wilmette, IL, once had a problem replacing burned out streetlights used on side-streets because parts of the long-life bulb used asbestos. The contractor who ultimately did the job solved the problem of cancer risk (which was largely non-existent, but the fears of litigation were high) by inviting in a construction union and accepting status as a union shop in exchange for the union agreeing to binding safety standards and terms of compensation for those workers doing the job.

Yeah, a 100mm cannon and a 30mm auto-cannon in the same turret. Add on ATGMs fired from the 100mm gun and 3 PKMT GPMGs and you’ve got enough firepower to satisfy wingnut fantasies. But its actually a practical vehicle seeing action right now in Yemen.

The short barrel 75 on the Pz IV & Stg III was probably fairly close all things considered. Probably very close to the same amount of HE potential in the shells IIRC.

The French gun was similar to ours - acceptable for infantry support but not as good as either the German or Russian guns of similar intent.

The Sherman’s 75mm was in all but very early models more than twice as long as that of the Char B1, but it was able to fire the same HE ammo. For that reason the Allies made restoration of French 75mm HE ammo production a decent priority from the early autumn of 1944 and such rounds were being produced again in France by the end of the year.

Trump is such a disaster for the Republican party, for the first time in 50 years the traditionally conservative state of Utah is up for grabs according to a recent Deseret News/KSL poll.

“I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope,” former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt said.

Clinton’s numbers put her only slightly ahead of Trump with 38 percent over 36 percent, however, democratic-socialist candidate Sanders enjoys more than a ten point lead over Trump (48 percent to 37 percent).

“Any matchup in which Democrats are competitive in the state of Utah is shocking,” said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of Brigham Young University’s Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy.

Could fire the French ammo. Our more modern ammo was actually better. OTOH, locally made and easy to supply ammo, even if not as good, would trump better stuff shipped across the medium sized pond.

It’s funny to see the legacy of the US’s unpreparedness for WWI as reflected in our hasty purchase of so many French Canon de 75 modèle 1897 and it’s impact in the next war. Just for giggles, if I worked for a defense company I’d try sneaking in a spec for a IFV with a 75 that used those case dimensions…

Ah, from wiki…

The 75mm M2 and M3 tank guns of the M3 and M4 Medium tanks, the 75mm M6 tank gun of the M24 light tank and the 75mm gun of the -G and -H subtypes of the B-25 Mitchell bomber all used the same ammunition as the M1897. The 75mm Pack Howitzer M1 used the same projectiles fired from a smaller 75x272R case.

Yeah, that was it. Restoring French production lines also provided employment to the people who worked them and thus made those people less willing to listen to the Communists still active in France. But the biggest reason was indeed to reduce the amount of ammo that had to be shipped from the US.

A taxi driver at a park in Havana. At times, Cuba can feel like a nation abandoned. The aching disrepair of its cities, the untamed foliage of its countryside, the orphaned coastlines — a half-century of isolation has wrapped the country in decay. Yet few places in the world brim with as much life as Cuba, a contrast drawn sharper amid its faded grandeur.

Dude, he’s probably in a Cuban government authorized band/orchestra. If so his instrument probably cost him nothing in monetary terms. What it cost is his life - the time spent learning, practicing and becoming good enough to have gainful employment as a musician. Looking at that picture and guessing his age? Minimum of 20 years playing the bass to get to this point.

I watched the episode (#4?) where DD battles the motorcycle gang as he walks down the staircase, then went to bed. One of my dreams was about fighting a gang somewhere, and not doing do well, and then I woke up — at 2 am.

It’s really an intense show. Like you say, the writing and acting are top notch, but the videography is, too. The staircase scene had that dance-like feel that you get watching Hong Kong kungfu movies (wuxia).

Did prehistoric women find ear hair sexy or what? Most of the indignities that come with getting older I can wrap my head around, but this?

In prehistoric times you would have been trampled by a mammoth or suffered some other such mischief long before senescence reared it’s hoary head, so its effects on your formerly handsome visage would have been of little interest to natural selection.

In other words, you’re out of warrantee.

When people in Utah are like, “You know who sounds good? That Jewish Socilaist.” you know the GOP is in trouble.

I think being a sometimes marginalized and demonized religious minority (on a national level, at any rate) might make them more responsive to Trump’s targeting of Muslims. I mean, if Trump decideded it was politically expedient to go after Mormons next, would any of his base balk? They mostly think Mormons are Satan worshipers anyway.

I wonder how Dominionists feel about Mormonism.
Dominionism is just another form of anti-Constitutional sectarianism. It is just as dangerous to minorities as whatever Trumpism is.

Maybe Mormons feel safe with Dominionists. I am reminded that Glenn Beck follows a brand of Mormonism.

And then I came back to this:
Is Glenn Beck a Christian?

This is because Mormonism not only denies essential doctrines of the Christian faith but also it reinterprets the Christian faith into something entirely new and foreign to Scripture.

It may be a shock to many people but just saying you “believe in Jesus” doesn’t make a person Christian.

In my sphere, the PM is bringing the budget forward, recalling Parliament early in order to try and pass what has been framed as an ‘anti-union corruption’ bill, reinstating a construction industry watchdog opposed by Labor and the Greens.
When this ultimately fails, a double-dissolution election will be triggered and we’ll likely be going to the polls on July 2nd. It will be the first such election since 1987.
It will be made a little more interesting this time in that new Senate election laws will be in effect.
Last week, Labor and a small group of crossbench Independents filibustered the passage of the bill for 28 hours knowing it would ultimately come to naught.
Now preference changes mean that voters will have more control over where their vote goes and cuts off the microparties from being able to negotiate complicated preference swaps which, in the last election saw the election to the Senate of a candidate from the Motoring Enthusiasts Party.
Long story short, the conservative Coalition is likely to win government because Labor’s leader is pretty tepid. Think Rubio soundbites but delivered in a languid Australian drone.
But still, short election season for us.
I can get sick of the ads and electioneering, vote, get a result and all before the respective US parties’ conventions are even held ;)

Army Pvt. Jameson T. Hazelbower went AWOL after learning he was suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl. Despite the potential threat to the public that he posed, the self-described sex addict roamed free for nearly three months before local police collared him in Winnebago, Illinois, near where he grew up.

And that was only by chance, according to interviews, police reports and court-martial records obtained by The Associated Press.

An officer responded to a call late on a Friday night in March 2014 about a suspicious vehicle parked in a cul-de-sac outside an apartment complex. Hazelbower, his pants down to his knees, was in the car with a girl, barely 14. She was unharmed.

Hazelbower’s case is a window into an obscure but significant aspect of the U.S. military’s legal system. Deserters suspected of serious crimes are to be prioritized for capture based on the severity of the offenses. But the Army never searched for Hazelbower and the U.S. Marshals Service was not called in, even though marshals have arrested more than 200 deserters over the past five years alone.

Now that the Mormons are openly targeted they will reflect on what it means to vote for people with toxic political beliefs.

On the surface, you’d think Mormons, Pentecostals, Catholics, etc., all seem to get along with each other just fine. In fact, there’s animosity simmering below the surface wherever these religious sects intermingle. In some parts of the world, that animosity has turned into outright bloodshed (N. Ireland, Kosovo, India, for example). In the USA — mostly in the great interior between the Rockies and the Appalachians — it’s waiting for the right opportunity to rear its ugly head.

I was surprised, for example, that in some parts of Western Kentucky, the Baptists still do not trust the Catholics, even though the latter have been there for 200 years or more. And the Mormons are even more suspect, since they have an extra holy book or two and some historically odd ideas about marriage and Jesus.

Mormons are used to being reviled. But the days of stringing up Mormons from trees, and burning down their homes have long since passed. Maybe.

Your link didn’t load. The issue of AWOL and deserter status is tricky—someone who disappears is normally carried as AWOL for 6 months before being ‘dropped from rolls’ and placed in a deserter status. No effort is usually spent on AWOLs, only apprehending them if they come to the surface in an unrelated police incident. That seems to be what happened.

Note the case of SGT Bergdahl—he wasn’t charged with desertion while missing in Afghanistan—he was AWOL/Missing for a time then moved to DUSTWUN—Duty Status and Whereabouts Unknown. He even was promoted in cycle while absent.

What no one has reported is that the right/Trump is doing exactly what they been accusing the Left of doing for decades: dividing the Americans, causing riots, wanting to create a civil war, racial divisions, cult-like following, candidate worship, dumbing of America, causing violence, etc., etc.,

205
Dr. Matt  Mar 21, 2016 • 6:07:44am

But you see what Erickson & Co. are getting at here. They think Perry “would win Texas and at least obstruct Trump.” He’d get Texas’s 38 electoral votes and deny Trump (and Hillary Clinton, presumably) the 270 votes necessary to win the presidency outright. At that point, the race goes to the House of Representatives, with each state’s congressional delegation getting one vote. According to the Twelfth Amendment, the House would choose from the top three electoral vote getters. So it’s important that the third-party candidate win one state at least. Erickson thinks Perry would win Texas and House Republicans would then automatically make him president.

The GOP is never good with math. That much is clear.

Whether it’s budget matters (see Kansas, Louisiana, NJ, or the federal budget), or reproductive health (hey, you can still get an abortion at the sole clinic across state lines hundreds of miles away as though that is reasonable, or that TRAP laws save lives of women, even though there’s a much greater chance of complication from having plastic surgery at less regulated ambulatory surgical centers), or that voter ID only serves to depress voter turnout and doesn’t address problems with fraud - that there’s only a handful of documented cases where someone may have actually voted as someone else in more than a billion votes cast), etc.

Math and statistics aren’t GOP strong suits.

Neither is logic and reasoning (an extension of math/statistics), and being fact-challenged doesn’t help either.

Trump got 26% of the vote in the GOP primary, if he get 26% of Romney’s total that puts him at 3.3 million votes which would be a tie with a 2012 Barack Obama and Perry will get 11 millionty votes and become president?

Tell him pros started out with cheaper equipment, and paid for their pro-quality lenses with the money they made selling their pix.

There’s a bit in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy about Bistromathics, the field of numerical computation involved in divvying up the bill for a meal (“Who had the garlic mushrooms? Not sure why the link won’t work:

For the two incidents in Illinois, Hazelbower pleaded guilty in the civilian court system to aggravated criminal sexual abuse and indecent solicitation of a child and received 30 months of probation.

Hazelbower was then returned to the Army. By that time a third sexual assault victim from the Fort Campbell area had been identified, although the court-martial records don’t state when the authorities first learned of her. She was 15 and lived in Kentucky, according to the documents.

He pleaded not guilty in military court to all the charges. But he was convicted by a military judge in May 2015 of child rape, possession of child pornography, sexual abuse of a child, desertion and other charges. For those crimes, he was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Also:

In fact, there was a lack of urgency to locate Hazelbower despite strident warnings from his superiors at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the records show. The military’s version of an arrest warrant described him as a “sexually violent predator” and a known drug abuser. Also, he had gone AWOL before. “CAUTION - ESCAPE RISK” is stamped in bold letters on the right side of the document.

OUTVETS at St Patrick’s Day Parade

Weather was decent for most of the parade in South Boston yesterday. Was pleased to hear a resounding applause for the brave OUTVETS as they marched for just the second time. Bigger applause than last year. Funny that it was also the year they commemorated “Whacko” Hurley’s 50 years of parade organization and he fought tooth and nail to keep the gays from marching.

I remember an old saying from when the drinking age was 18 that if you were old enough to die for you country then you could drink. Well, if you are gay enough to fight for your country, you should be able to march.

That’s my camera, in fact. I love it. The kit lens is pretty good. After he learns how to take good pix with the kit, he can lobby for a portrait lens (85-135 mm range) or a zoom lens.

Some pros argue that all you need is a sharp, fast 50 mm. That’s what my late, lamented Nikon FM had as standard equipment.

That sounds like the actions after he was apprehended by the civ LE. I’m more interested in the Army response to his disappearance. The ‘strident warnings’ from from his superiors, if timely, point to a breakdown in communication between CID and the civilian authorities—not always a smooth relationship. If an on-post case had been made, he should have been reported as any dangerous fugitive.

If you’re looking towards Canon, the 70D or 80D are now around $999 to $1300 depending on vendor. The differences are best indicated here.

Nikon v Canon? How about the Nikon D500 v. Canon 80D.

Stepping down a level (more in price than specs, since all these cameras could be used by a pro and have capabilities pros would have dreamed of years back).

The Canon T5 v. Nikon D3300. Note that the numbering systems are wonky, particularly with Canon (the T5 is designated the 1200d internationally).

Whatever camera you get among this batch, your grandson is pretty lucky to have a grandma who’s thinking about all this and making an informed decision in cultivating his interests. Mazel tov!

The secret is Nikon and maybe Canon use Sony image chips, so getting a Sony is a wise choice for now. The a5000 is a few hundred bucks and for a little more the a6000. Both have gotten positive reviews.

The thing about buying a camera is the long-term use. You’re buying into a system with Nikon, Olympus, Canon, Sony, etc. Once you start adding lenses and flash attachments, it’s hard to justify the cost of switching to a new system. That’s why I bought a Nikon D3300, so I could use the lenses I already have, and not a new Sony a5000.

DSLR will always rule the sports / action still market. Mirrorless autofocus has gotten much better but the shutter lag problem is insurmountable, you’ll always have to close the shutter, produce a uniform dark frame then reopen and close it again.

I had no idea that Mormons were so reviled in some circles.
Now that the Mormons are openly targeted they will reflect on what it means to vote for people with toxic political beliefs.

When I first moved out to California, I lived with relatives who attended a Foursquare church. I had to go to those insane church services where the preacher constantly lashed out at “Unchristian cults” such as Unitarians, Catholics, 7th Day Adventists and especially Mormons.

BTW—the preacher, Paul Risser, eventually was elected to run the Foursquare Church. Like every other Pulpit Pimp I’ve seen in action, he got caught in a scandal where the church’s pension fund got fleeced by Millken’s disciples on Wall Street. Of course, Risser got a “commission”, er, kickback from Wall Street that put a tidy sum in his Chri$t- Centered Bank Account.

Risser got bounced out of the Foursquare Presidency, but like a good Ayn Randian, er, ¢hri$tian, he got the marks to forgive him for “backsliding”.

So sick and tired of these pulpit pimps. It’s time to tax the churches!

The most important thing for a photographer is the eye and some two-dimensional design study. A good eye with an inexpensive camera will go a lot further than someone that thinks the more they can spend on the camera the better they will be.

2D design is important because it helps you judge shapes quickly and helps with looking at both positive and negative shapes, how to deal with dominant, secondary and accenting shapes and arranging them for dynamic images.

Get good enough and you might get a job where they will provide you with the better equipment.

(And the same goes with musical instruments! Well, in music you don’t need 2D design…)

My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic. My second camera was a Nikon FM, which my dad bought me as an employee of Ehrenreich Photo-Optical, back when they owned Nikon. When Iearned how to take halfway decent photos, I bought a portrait lens and a wide angle, both by Vivitar. Used that system for nearly 30 years, then I got a Nikon D60, and last year, a D3300.

Meanwhile, Chinese guys with more money than sense are walking about with $2,000 cameras and mega-zooms, and I bet my shots are as good or better than theirs.

Even cellphone cameras do a decent job now.

Some good news:

With Donald Trump steamrolling towards the GOP nomination, the political chatter is increasingly focused on whether Trump could win a general election by making surprise inroads into states in the industrial Midwest. Many Democrats and nonpartisan observers see this as probably the only plausible (if that’s even the right word for it) path for Trump, who might do this mainly by running up huge numbers among white voters — particularly blue collar whites.

But a new examination of the demographics and projected voting patterns in some of the key Rust Belt states underscores just how unlikely this really is. To succeed, this analysis finds, Trump would likely have to improve on Mitt Romney’s advantage over Barack Obama among blue collar whites by double digit margins, which is an astronomically high bar — in almost all of these states.

The rub of the matter is that Trump’s goal of winning by running up big margins among whites could be made even harder by ongoing demographic shifts that are slowly rendering even whiter Rust Belt states less white. The CAP report found that in a number of these states — Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Ohio -the blue collar white share of the vote is projected to decline by at least two percentage points, and the overall white share is projected to drop by around one point.

The GOP is fucked y’all.

I think having the tilt/turn LCD screen on the back is indispensable. Great for low angle, dealing with glare, etc. You don’t realize how good it is until you have an opportunity to shoot with it. And with my Canon, it’s good to have the tilt/turn so you can actually protect the back too.

A tilting LCD screen is great for candid photography. You can get shots of people looking natural. Once they see someone pointing a camera at them, they freeze or act self-conscious.

The most important thing for a photographer is the eye and some two-dimensional design study. A good eye with an inexpensive camera will go a lot further than someone that thinks the more they can spend on the camera the better they will be.

My niece went to Drexel and graduated the last year (I think) they offered a degree in photography. She did her summers with Jock Sturges and all that entails. Is a brilliant technician in the darkroom and with Photoshop. She bought one Drexel’s Hasselblad cameras for (from what I understand) for a song. Moved to Vencie, CA, to become one of the glitterati. Decided to skip bread-and-butter projects and jump straight to ‘high-art’ photography. Her work is not good. She has no eye for composition and the arty stuff doesn’t make any point.

She has, reluctantly, moved to doing weddings and some portrait work, but doing it kicking and screaming. It doesn’t help that the photography clique she is in reinforces the poor decisions. As far as I can tell, she does lots of assistant work and she’s been doing a photo-a-day project for the last three or four years. Every once in a while, she does nail something (she was published in some Baltimore City magazine) but.

I cut my teeth shooting for newspaper work. Only recently have I realized I might be able to make money shooting photos if I were more self-dsiciplined about reviewing my work and you know actually trying to sell it to people.

I still have a LOT to learn, though. The trouble with everyone having digital cameras and cellphone cameras at their disposal is getting a shot that’s unusual and appealing, but not too arty as to make it in unmarketable.

On guns Garland is no moderate, given the blatantly unconstitutional DC law he was willing to sign off on, and that means no Garland. Frankly, I think Republicans should vote him down on that basis, rather than block him, but before doing that the NRA should spread the word is states like West Virginia and Montana and force some Blue Dog Democrats to announce their opposition to Garland, on pain of being of being declared failures on their NRA Report Card.

Because on firearms, Garland should be Pass/Fail: Vote for him, you FAIL, vote against him and you won’t get an ‘F’ this year regardless of other votes. I think the NRA has a good chance to Bork Judge Garland and I think it should be done. The majority of the American public does not agree with DC’s draconian gun laws, and that can be used to build support for Republicans and gun rights.

The Israel security fences? You mean comparing the US-Mexico border, which is just about 2,000 miles long with a country smaller than New Jersey (and whose borders with all of its neighbors is well under that length.

In fact, the West Bank security fence is all of 430 miles, and ranges in type from concrete barrier to razor wire.

That barrier was built to stop suicide bombers from carrying out attacks. It worked so well, that the terror groups started carrying out rocket attacks. Or attempting to blow up segments of the wall.

Oh, and the Gaza-Israel fence/barrier? That’s all of 37 miles in length. And a good portion of that fence is razor wire.

There’s huge issues with having a fence along the entire 2,000 mile border, not the least of which is that the Rio Grande makes up the entire TX portion of the border, and since Mexico doesn’t want the fence, you’ve got to locate the border inside US territory - the river can’t be disturbed per treaty and federal law. So, you’re losing territory to a no-man’s land between the physical border and the fence.

But Trump knows this since he’s also stated he would use natural barriers as border in portions - rivers, mountains, and deserts. In other words, he BSes his way through demanding we build a yuge wall, but the reality is he’s not doing a damned thing more than we already have - 700 miles of wall previously authorized by Congress.

Some of it’s probably her perception (kind of like people thinking that this season has been worse than 2008, when I think it’s been about the same), but a lot of this really does fit into my idea that because there really isn’t much difference between two candidates in a primary, every difference must be magnified and made into the worst thing ever. It is kind of frustrating that people you would think should know better will act that way.

So the NRA is allowed to pick SC Justices now? Oh Hell No. What a bunch of crap that is.

I have never heard anyone in any place of being able to make changes EVER talk about banning guns. Ever. Not once. But you know what? If you want to own military or SWAT type weapons, JOIN THE MILITARY. Go through SWAT training. The average person doesn’t need that shit because this isn’t freaking Somalia.

What sensible people want is background checks, restrictions on people with a history of violence, mental illness/PTSD and maybe, oh, once you own a couple hundred guns you ought to slow the fuck down.

It’s all bullshit to distract from the fact that we have a problem with firearms in this country. Hell, the NRA has made sure the CDC can’t even STUDY gun violence and in some places pediatricians can’t even approach the subject of gun safety when you have a toddler in the house. The answer is NOT more guns. It just isn’t.

The NRA opposition to Garland is full of baffling BS that ignores reality. And facts.

Figures that the GOP would jump on it as their last gasp chance to derail even holding hearings on an obviously well qualified nominee who even GOP senators have lauded over the years (up to and including this past month).

But, don’t you know, “the NRA has a good chance to Bork him”/

Bork, who got his committee hearing. The committee voted not to confirm. Reagan and Bork wanted the full Senate to vote. They voted not to confirm.

So again, tell me how the GOP is Borking Garland. That would require hearings and votes, which the GOP refuses to do at all.

I learned something new about Texas today: The state does not require companies that make car loans to notify the state when the loan is paid off. All the car company has to do is put that information on the title when it is sent to the owner.

This might be OK except when you lose the title and need to get a new one from the state. Then, you have to find a way to track down the loan company, because the state will only accept a letter with original signatures (no faxes or PDFs). In my case, the loan company was bought out by another company and all their branches in the area were closed. So, I’m having to get the letter Fed Ex-ed in order to take it to the one DMV in the area (60 miles from my house) so that I can give the title to the car company I traded the car into over the weekend.

There’s a channel on our cable system (XFinity) called Viceland, run by VICE. They’re doing a series called Weedicate, about the pot debate. It’s really well done, they are covering all kinds of aspects of the issue. The last episode was about PTSD in soldiers and how weed helps. They also went into detail about how the VA is getting in the way of this and prescribing HUGE amounts of pills to vets with no therapy, not so much as a referral to a therapist. If a vet gets caught using weed, they lose their VA benefits.

One vet they interviewed was in bad shape. Instead of guns, he collected knives, there was a pile of a hundred at least in his bedroom. He rarely leaves the house, his wife left him, he can’t see his daughter, can’t work, etc. They talked with other vets, some have been on up to 35 pills a day, A DAY, for years.

All of this is my long winded way of saying, we’re losing at least 22 vets a day to suicide. This doesn’t even count the ones dying of drug overdoses. How many of those vets have a cache of weapons in their homes? More than a couple. I have seen it myself. I’ve lost two people I know in the last year to suicide by firearm. My son in law killed himself with all the pills they gave him. When they found him he had a gun by his side, just in case the pills didn’t work. (my daughter just told me about the gun this last weekend)

Guns have one use. To Kill. Period. There need to be strict rules in place with penalties. If we can put people in jail for 13 years over a couple of joints then I think a few more strict regulations on guns shouldn’t be too damned difficult. GAH.

I have a new customer who is a vet on disability. He’s the nephew of a guy who’s been my customer since I opened. He came to visit his uncle, for reasons. The uncle said ‘The disability is not physical, if you know what I mean.’ He’s had a run in with the law here that could get his ‘enormous’ collection of guns back home removed from his possessions if it goes against him. I don’t know where the case stands, and right now I’m getting along better with the nephew than the uncle, but it would be a good thing if he were disarmed. And on better supervision of his meds.

Walid Phares is the big name on that list. He was among Mitt’s advisers, and had links to Lebanese militia groups that advocated partitioning that country into a separate ethnic enclaves. Extreme right wing views.

As for the rest:

Kellogg, a former Army lieutenant general, is an executive vice president at Virginia-based CACI International, a Virginia-based intelligence and information technology consulting firm with clients around the world. He has experience in national defense and homeland security issues and worked as chief operating officer for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Baghdad following the invasion of Iraq.

Schmitz served as inspector general at the Department of Defense during the early years of George W. Bush’s administration and has worked for Blackwater Worldwide. In a brief phone call Monday, Schmitz confirmed that he is working for the Trump campaign and said that he has been involved for the past month. He said he frequently confers with Sam Clovis, one of Trump’s top policy advisers, and that there has been a series of conference calls and briefings in recent weeks.

Papadopoulos directs an international energy center at the London Centre of International Law Practice. He previously advised the presidential campaign of Ben Carson and worked as a research fellow at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington.

What I always found amusing about the Longoria/Parker pairing was how totally anti-stereotype their immigration histories are — the “Mexican” woman whose family has been in San Antonio since before the Mayflower landed, and the “African-American” guy who’s actually Belgian French, came to this country in 2001 on a special-talent visa sponsored by his employer.

re: #316 Dark_Falcon

The one question I have about this nonsense is why? Why try out GOP talking points at LGF? Republican talking points don’t do well here because fantasy and reality are incompatible.

Everyone knows the reason the GOP is being obstructionist on the SCOTUS nominee. They think they will keep the Senate, win the presidency and appoint some 25 year old RWNJ talking point dispenser (grown in a vat at Liberty U) that is several parsecs to the right of Scalia on all issues.

Plus they get a chance to be gigantic assholes to the black guy in the white house.
