Far Right PAC Releases Deceptive Video to Make It Seem Like Bill Clinton Was Bashing Obama

Another fraudulent attack - and Bernie Sanders helps them spread it

YouTube

Here’s the latest deceptive video being circulated by right wingers to smear Bill Clinton by taking a statement out of context. Notice: it’s a 24-second clip, posted to YouTube by the far right propaganda PAC calling itself “America Rising.”

Here’s the full statement with the sections cut out of this clip:

“I literally from the time I met her 45 years ago until we talked yesterday, she is the best change maker I have ever known. She always finds a way to make something good happen, to make people feel empowered, to buy people into the process, to make democracy work the way the framers intended for it to work. Now if you don’t believe we can all grow together again, if you don’t believe we’re ever going to grow again, if you believe it’s more important to re-litigate the past, there may be many reasons that you don’t want to support her.

“But if you believe we can all rise together, if you believe we’ve finally come to the point where we can put the awful legacy of the last eight years behind us and the seven years before that where we were practicing trickle-down economics with no regulation in Washington, which is what caused the crash, then you should vote for her. Because she’s the only person who basically has good ideas, will tell you how she’s going to pay for them, can be commander-in-chief, and is a proven change maker with Republicans and Democrats and Independents alike.”

And here’s Bill Clinton’s statement tonight about this fake controversy:

An aide to Bill Clinton says the legacy he was referring to was Republicans’ obstructionism.

“When Republicans controlled the White House, their trickle-down approach drove our economy to the brink of a collapse. After President Obama was elected, Republicans made it their number one goal to block him at every turn,” spokesman Angel Urena said in a statement. “That unprecedented obstruction these last eight years is their legacy, and the American people should reject it by electing Hillary Clinton to build on President Obama’s success so we can all grow and succeed together.”

This video clip is now posted all over the right wing universe, and it’s fraudulent; it’s an edited clip that distorts Bill Clinton’s words to make it seem like “the awful legacy of the last eight years” was referring to the Obama presidency. But it wasn’t. He was talking about the economic collapse and the subsequent Republican obstructionism during the Obama presidency. That’s what President Clinton meant by “awful legacy” — the legacy of Republican economic malfeasance and obstructionism.

Pro-tip: when you see a 24-second video clip from a right wing PAC, it’s almost certainly an out-of-context dishonest hit job.

This, folks, is what right wingers do; they lie and deliberately distort statements by taking them out of context.

But it’s really disappointing to see Bernie Sanders helping them do it.

Sanders needs to do the right thing now, and apologize for helping spread this smear campaign that originated with a right wing propaganda organization.

Here’s his chance to live up to the hype.

This shows they’re not backing away from the chasm in which Trump dwells. Rather, they’re doubling down on the message that everything is the fault of liberalism. The lies are smaller, faster, but consistent in tone. This ad is the future: little counterfeits.

2018 and 2020 will bring new trumpery, guaranteed.

Also, with regard to those smutty Melania ads run by a Cruz supporting PAC mentioned downstairs: yeah, she posed nude, but every morning that Heidi Cruz wakes up she makes a conscious choice not to throw the kids in the car and flee the country to start a new life under an assumed name in Belize.

I gotta give this to Melania. Sorry, Ted.

Off topic:

Are any other Mac Yosemite users (that’s right, Yosemite not El Capitan) having trouble connecting to LGF after today’s software updates? Doesn’t matter what browser I try—-can’t even ping the domain name in the terminal. Some other domains are affected too.

Windows boot camp on the same partition has no problems. Other computers on the same network have no problem.

Flushing DNS cache and other such maintenance routines: no help.

Only happened after today’s system software update (security update). Weird.

OT, but I need to leave to go teach soon. I’ve posted about my former student was in a serious car-bus crash in Vegas several days ago. She’s doing much better, as this photo shows. Ashlee was up and walking around the hospital.

She’s got grit, I tell you. I’m not sure I’d be up and around after losing an arm.

For weeks now, Bernie and his surrogates have attacked this presidency, suggested he hasn’t done enough, he hasn’t wanted to do enough, and have bemoaned the state of the country as a result. But now he has the chutzpah to browbeat the Clintons over a nontroversy whose core is a perceived attack on the legacy of President Obama?

Yeah, that’s it for me, that’s the final fucking straw. I hope they roast Bernie’s ass over an open flame at the convention, because this has gotten to the point of ridiculousness. He’s now openly promoting far-right bullshit in an effort to save his floundering campaign. We won’t get an apology, because the man doesn’t do apologies, he just moves onto the next avenue of attack. He is the worst aspects of Ron Paul and Donald Trump rolled into one very pathetic old man.

I suspect that Bernie is a quite decent fellow, it is just hard to find decent help these days. The ones willing to work for free or on the cheap insist on doing things their own way, which is to push ideology and “enemy-bashing” over simply presenting their case why their candidate is the better choice.

The thing is we heard this same argument from Hillary supporters in ‘08 when explaining why her campaign was making obviously dumb choices or pushing statements that were pissing people off. And the counterargument was “If these are the sorts of people she hires for her campaign, what kind of people will she appoint to her administration?”

So I ask why is he being held to a different standard than she was?

Berniacs at KOS doing back-flips trying to spin the path to victory:

Technically true? “Thriving” and Ready for a Big Moment

Some clarity from a Statistics B.A.:

A mathematical analysis is only as strong as the assumptions it is built upon. As a Statistics B.A., I can tell you that the one weak assumption underlying the ‘inevitability’ crowd is that the dynamics of this race will remain static. There are miles to go before we sleep.

Aside from ignoring superdelegates, and hoping that maybe some unknown will occur to change the race, the idea seems to be that he did well so far, considering where he started, so , you know, he can pull it off.

Is it possible for Bernie Sanders to win 58% of the remaining pledged delegates? Of course. Is it a daunting task? Of course. Going from 3% to 45% in the national polls is also a daunting task, one that Sen. Sanders has already completed.

It’s no offense meant to yourself, but I’ve developed a bit of a hair trigger in recent weeks to fence-sitters who are trying to find reasons to cover for Bernie and his rabid fan club. All the good will I had towards the man died a slow death, with the final stake through the heart his admission last week that he’s just running the DNC primaries for the media coverage.

Which, in itself is not a bad thing. Hillary would look bad running without opposition and some of Bernie’s positions are forcing her a bit to the left. Running only against the GOP candidates, she would only have to be slightly to the left of Francisco Franco in order to appear moderate.

I have no tolerance for ideologues, and even less tolerance for Bernie-or-bust supporters.

See, that was yesterday. Yesterday, he was a benefit to the race because he was helping to show that she had room to move to the left and still remain in that comfortable middle ground that wins elections. Yesterday, he was wanting to focus the race on the issues, wanting us to discuss things like income inequality, like climate change, like racism.

Today, he’s spending his time demanding speech transcripts, bringing up votes on bills that Hillary wasn’t even in office to weigh in on, slamming the President’s performance, and exploiting the party for his own ends. He’s turned from an asset into a liability, one that can do a lot more damage than any good he has done the party.

34
Targetpractice  Mar 22, 2016 • 1:35:22am

In other words, just like Bernie is following Hillary’s ‘08 electoral trajectory in winning states but still getting her ass kicked in delegates, he’s now getting mean and nasty in a fashion that will follow the party and its nominee on into November.

I do not think HRC should be driven to the left. A leftist Presidential candidate could lose this cycle. As leftists candidates have done before.

This isn’t a game we play every four years. This is shiv politics. (edit: cribbed from Alyosha) We have to win the Presidency.

And it’s so fucking depressing. And here I am assuming Islamic terrorism, too, before the facts are out.

He is such a good talker. Regarding how terrible the Iran deal was:

TRUMP: Well, I think, number one, we shouldn’t have given the money back. I think, number two, we should have had our prisoners before the negotiations started. We should have doubled up the sanctions. We should have gone in and said, ‘release our prisoners,’ they would have said ‘no,’ and we would have said, ‘double up the sanctions,’ and within a short period of time we would have had our prisoners back.

The refugees are there because of the civil war in Syria, which was caused by the power vacuum from the Iraq war. European nations never spent any time figuring out how to get the refugees into proper housing and give them jobs, a slow economy in the EU zone did not help this. But bringing in millions with no plan was a recipe for extremism. I did not say refugees shouldn’t be accepted, I said there should have been a plan to integrate and train, educate, and give them job opportunities. Most sit around doing nothing in their groups and are ripe for exploitation from extremism.

I find that most Germans do not have a problem with the refugees, their anger is directed at the politicians who did not foresee the extent of the crisis and failed to put measures into place in a timely manner.

The former East Germany has experienced a decline in population of nearly one million, it is hoped that refugees will help rectify that problem, but first they have to learn enough German and job skills to become employable.

Again nothing to do with what I said. I didn’t say most citizens had a problem with refugees all I said is the politicians never bothered to make plans to help the millions of refugees and keep them away from being exploited by extremists. Also the few countries like Germany taking in a disproportionate amount because other EU countries didn’t want to share the burden didn’t help.

A Top Virginia Republican Is Peddling Self-Defense Insurance to Fearful Gun Owners

Ken Cuccinelli’s practice is part of a growing number of law firms offering the controversial service.

One of Virginia’s most prominent Republican politicians is banking that gun owners in the state will pay his law firm hundreds of dollars a year to have an on-call attorney ready to defend them if they are charged with a crime or sued for shooting someone.

Ken Cuccinelli, a former Virginia attorney general, founded United Self Defense Law two years ago, following a failed gubernatorial run in an election in which gun rights played a pivotal role. “When you are forced to fight for your life, we think you should have someone ready to fight for you in court,” the firm says on its website.

There is nothing unusual about a law firm taking Second Amendment cases. But Cuccinelli’s practice is part of a burgeoning group of firms that also offer a controversial service: a form of insurance against the costs gun owners may incur if they use a firearm in what they claim was self defense.

Except that previous recent European attacks were conducted by radicalized citizens, not refugees, and we have yet to see if any refugees were involved in today’s bombings.

And a lot of the radicalization we see is not just among Islamists, but also among nationalist and racist groups in Europe.

There is nothing unusual about a law firm taking Second Amendment cases. But Cuccinelli’s practice is part of a burgeoning group of firms that also offer a controversial service: a form of insurance against the costs gun owners may incur if they use a firearm in what they claim was self defense.

As a rule, if you are using a gun to defend yourself or your family in your own home, it is assumed to be self-defense in most all cases.

The problem arises in “stand your ground” situations where a subjective sense of “being threatened” is used a grounds for using a weapon.

I think it was Massad Ayoob who said that, even in an open-and-shut case of self-defence, the first pull of the trigger costs you ten thousand bucks.

I heard it explained that if you are going to shoot someone, make sure they die in your house: then it is a clear case of self-defense and no charges are pressed. If they crawl out the window and die, then the police have to treat it as a homicide.

It doesn’t work that way. What if you invite “that guy who fucked you over in your promotion at work” home for a few drinks and then you had an “accident” with your gun while showing it off to him? See the Oscar Pistorious case for a worked example of “self defence gone wrong” as a murder.

Dead body with obvious violence, the police will look carefully at the situation and make a report to the prosecutor. Anyone in that position with a smoking gun and a body in front of them should lawyer up immediately, no matter how righteous they think their actions were.

The world’s largest aircraft has been unveiled for the first time since being fully assembled in the UK.
The 302ft (92m) long Airlander 10 - part plane, part airship - was floated in a First World War hangar in Bedfordshire.
Photographers struggled to capture the whole length of the aircraft, which is around 50ft (15m) longer than the biggest passenger jets, ahead of its inaugural flight later this year.

I am having trouble determining when he HAS to drop out. At this point I am not sure he COULD drop out. He is still raising money and has ardent supporters.

And Hillary is in no position to tell him he has to drop out now, since she wouldn’t in 2008. I’ll also point out that Obama won a landslide victory in ‘08, and that all the polls being taken now indicate Hillary will win a landslide victory over Trump. So I’m not going to fret that Sanders continuing in the race will somehow hurt Hillary’s chances.

Of course. I assume Hillary knows, after going from inevitable to loser in 2008, that she has to work hard and take nothing for granted, which is why I am confident she will defeat Trump. Trump isn’t a great politician; he is just exploiting the GOP’s vulnerabilities which render it incapable of taking him down: the GOP’s lack of diversity, its toxic political messaging and its unpopular policy stances. Democrats don’t have the same vulnerabilities, so she will be able to effectively attack Trump’s racism and misogyny and his terrible tax and health care reform plans.

This isn’t a game we play every four years. This is shiv politics. (edit: cribbed from Alyosha) We have to win the Presidency.
Berniacs can start working to change the mind of their teabagger neighbors and we will talk in two years.

Clinton stayed in the race until June. We have president Obama for two terms. Sanders staying in the race is not going to end the presidency.

Just getting my head wrapped around the news of this Brussels attack.

I don’t know what to think other than this is going to really mess with this year’s elections.

I had the Today show on and of course they had to have Trump on by phone. You can imagine how that went. He went on about how nice Brussels used to be but now because of all these refugees it now is a mess. Like France, like Germany. And he warned everyone! He is the only guy in the elections talking about this and that is why he is leading in all the polls.

And then Matt and Savannah had to go there and ask him what he would do and how he would handle the guy that Belgium arrested last week. Well of course he would do everything he can do. Does that mean you’d do anything? Yes, waterboarding and everything else we can do…we have to get info out of these guys. And of course no more refugees unless they have all their papers and records that we can verify.

Ugh. And then they said they asked Secretary Clinton to be on, but she refused. Well now how does that look America? Trump talks tough…Hillary silent.

I swear the big TV networks want Trump.

Damn this world. We are going to get into a world wide conflict yet. TV would love it, just think of all the coverage and ratings.

Was beautiful? Brussels is still beautiful. Just like Paris is still beautiful even though it was rocked by terror attacks. NYC is still beautiful despite the 9/11 attacks.

Belgium also happens to be home to NATO and EU. Just yesterday Trump wanted to reevaluate US participation in NATO. He’s also droning on about how he’d shut the borders. Never mind that as with the Paris attacks, the odds are that the terrorists involved were domestic - closing borders would not have prevented attack.

In fact, Trump also continues to say he’d limit entry in to the US from the Middle East. He’s also on the record saying he’d prevent Muslims, including Muslim Americans from entering the US.

The media gives him a pass on those earlier statements. Again.

I especially like this:

But to compare the two parties at this time in our history is to indulge in false equivalency. For rationalizing the GOP’s pathology by responding with a partisan tit-for-tat is not adequate to the circumstances. The sins you perceive in Democrats are the usual ones — misguided policies, ill chosen means for dubious ends, and the normal complement of rhetorical dishonesty and political squalor. However mistaken you may find Clinton and Sanders on the issues, their debate is addressed to the world as it exists and therefore open to a sensible critique. The squalor to which the GOP has sunk, an alternate reality rooted in anger and mendacity, transcends mere differences in policy, threatening the country with profound, perhaps irreparable, damage.

Holy hell this <underline>is</underline> a great article:

Long since, the GOP killed its moderates and trashed everything they stood for. It has replaced respected figures like William Cohen, Richard Lugar and John Danforth with rigid ideologues like Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, and social illiterates like James Inhofe, Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby. On issue after issue, they have embraced an orthodoxy rooted in extremism and divorced from fact. These dynamics forced Mitt Romney to win the nomination by running so far right that he could never get back. And what was the lesson learned among the party base? That Romney was not nearly extreme enough.

Of course, the US called on our NATO allies after 9/11 to help track down and go after the terror group responsible. Now, when Belgium is attacked, Trump’s followers are like - screw this. Dump our relationship. End our involvement.

The funhouse mirror worldview of Trump and his supporters is dangerous - not only to us, but to our allies. How can you trust him to keep his word when he’s more than willing to pull this kind of nonsense.

And Trump’s foreign policy “team” is filled with “experts” who have proven to be wrong time and time again (though Cruz has the same exact problem), and whose extremist views are out of line with most Americans.

Nope. I often see his books in the “take a book, leave a book” shelf in the post center of our condo community. I’ve never taken one. Maybe I will.

FUCK NATO!!1!!

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (CNN) — Five NATO planes have arrived at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, officials said Friday, the first-ever deployment of non-U.S. aircraft for military missions in American airspace.

The airborne warning and control system aircraft, or AWACS, will supplement similar U.S. aircraft patrolling the skies over the United States, officials at NATO headquarters in Belgium and at Tinker told CNN.

Most of the United States’ 30 AWACS, based at Tinker, have been flying around-the-clock surveillance of U.S. airspace, especially over New York and Washington, since the September 11 terrorist attacks. The planes’ crews watch for suspicious aircraft and provide coordination for the roughly 100 fighter jets, out of 25 bases, also protecting U.S. airspace.

Washington asked NATO for assistance because some American AWACS have been dispatched to the Afghanistan region, where the United States is currently undertaking military operations against the ruling Taliban. “Our AWACS fleet was never intended to fly continuous coverage over our [own] territory,” said an officer with NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

I was fixing up some breakfast and came back to the TV and the Today Show had Hillary on. I did catch her saying something about waterboarding and other ‘enhanced techniques’ do not work, anyone in the military will tell you that and if anything makes these attacks more likely. They talked a bit about the Apple IPhone thing and she said that is something that is going to have to be discussed and considered where law enforcement and the manufacturers are going to have to work out a way to deal with that.

At least it is good that she had a chance to come on the show and give a bit of a counter view to Trump.

Of course, the US called on our NATO allies after 9/11 to help track down and go after the terror group responsible. Now, when Belgium is attacked, Trump’s followers are like - screw this. Dump our relationship. End our involvement.

NATO is STILL in Afghanistan, fighting… somebody, anybody, fifteen years after the 9/11 attacks on US soil by a bunch of dysfunctional young Saudi idiot followers of a theocratic Wahabbi Sunni nutter. If NATO is disbanded does that mean all those military forces there get to go home?

The funhouse mirror worldview of Trump and his supporters is dangerous - not only to us, but to our allies. How can you trust him to keep his word when he’s more than willing to pull this kind of nonsense.

And Trump’s foreign policy “team” is filled with “experts” who have proven to be wrong time and time again (though Cruz has the same exact problem), and whose extremist views are out of line with most Americans.

They are never wrong. The world just selfishly refuses to conform to their expectations.

I think that NATO should have disbanded after the Warsaw Pact was dissolved and been replaced with a European security association that was simply affiliated with the US. Instead, NATO expanded right up to the Russian border and convinced them that it was the West that wanted to continue the Cold War.

Degree of Guilt

I’ve just read the blurb for Protect and Defend:

On a cold day in January President Kerry Kilcannon takes the oath of office- and within days makes his first, most important move: appointing a new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Kilcannon’s choice is a female judge with a brilliant record. And a secret.

While the Senate spars over Caroline Masters’ nomination, an inflammatory abortion rights case is making its way toward the judge-and will explode into the headlines. Suddenly, the most divisive issue in America turns the President’s nomination into all-out war. And from Judge Masters to a conservative, war-hero senator facing a crisis of conscience and a fifteen-year-old girl battling for her future, no one will be safe. Protect and Defend takes us on a riveting journey between what is legal, what is right… and the price of finally knowing the difference.

I’ll have to check my library to see if they have a copy.

Of course, ISIL will seek to claim responsibility/credit for the attack, whether they actually carried it out or not. It’s the same reason AQ would claim responsibility for attacks - it maintains their visibility and viability, plus acts as recruitment tool even though it directs more attention their way from military forces.

Sigh. The “new” meme going around the pet wingnuts this morning is a picture of the traffic jam in Arizona (?) because of the protesters with calls to be allowed to run them over with cars or physically remove them personally. Because protesting is criminal. Except when they do it.

I have been remarkably patient with these people, but it’s running thin.

Also, my wingnut’s neighbor’s mom is back in the hospital because her cancer has worsened. The same person who thinks turmeric and “acidifying the blood” will also cure what ails you. I have been beyond patient with this crap, but now she’s trying to scare her pregnant and due any day daughter into not vaccinating her baby. I seriously hope her mom didn’t try any of this quackery and is now out of remission because of it.

And re: Brussels, this is not only horrific, it’s going to keep the cycle of hatred going. Goody, just what the world needs. Sigh. How in the hell does the world deal with this shit without making things worse?

Some of this is security theater - making people think that they’re safe because security is more visible, but the reality is that there are far more targets than there are security forces - you can protect every subway station (NYC has a 240+), but they could target a museum (and NYC has dozens). You could deploy forces to every park, but they could hit a department store. Or school.

You get the idea - every city has countless soft targets.

That’s who terrorists target.

The outcome is to evoke a disproportionate response, which furthers their agenda in the world - whether it’s to gain further recruits in the Middle East or elsewhere, to show that they’re still relevant and can carry out attacks, etc.

Security forces will do their thing here, we’ll go on with our lives. Brussels will get our assistance and support, and they’ll get on with their lives and bury their dead. And security forces from Belgium, along with other NATO partners including the US, will go after those responsible as they’ve been doing all along.

If you lived close to me I’d invite you over for coffee and we could go plant shopping or something. Instead I’ll be taking The Kid to work and then coming back and cleaning outdoor furniture, listening to hair metal (lol) on my phone until it’s time to come in and make dinner. I cannot bear much more and it’s barely 11 AM here.

re: #204 The Vicious Babushka

Last night I tweeted you some pictures of beautiful calligraphy that I thought you would like, did you see it?

Yes, I did they were gorgeous—thank you. I dinged it with a like in the hopes that you’d see the acknowledgement.

This blog piece from Richard North Patterson on Huffington Post today pretty much distills every problem and dysfunction of the GOP. I highly recommend:

Thanks for the heads up. He is one of my favorite fiction writers. His trilogy about a president even covers some of the hot button issues of today—guns and the Supreme Court (I love that his fictional name for the NRA is SSA—Sons of the Second Amendment)

I get stalked into other topics and harassed for daring to downvote someone I disagree with on here, but I have dozens of downvotes because people clearly misunderstood what I said and took everything out of context. Gotta love the double standards at work. I was hoping this site was better than reddit but it turns out it is just the same type of downvoting hivemind and outrage machine.

The fact that Bernie Sanders’s campaign used that 24 second right wing hit piece against Obama and Clinton tells you all you need to know about the people running Sanders’s campaign and the man himself. If your willing to adopt right wing talking points to attack your opponent you have absolutely no integrity what’s so ever. If proves yet again what horrible strategists they are. You don’t burn down the Democratic Party, attack the parties leadership and still expect to get the parties nomination.
