Brussels Attacked: At Least 31 Dead at Airport and Train Station

Awful news from Belgium this morning: Brussels attacks: At least 31 dead at Zaventem and Maelbeek.

At least 31 people have been killed and many seriously injured in attacks at Brussels international airport and a city metro station.

Twin blasts hit Zaventem airport at 07:00 GMT, killing 11 and injuring 81, Belgium’s health minister said.

Another explosion struck Maelbeek metro station an hour later. Twenty people were killed, Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur said.

Judging from the BBC reporting, the airport bombers were by the ticket counters, and not even near the security checkpoints. The metro bomb was detonated from inside one carriage, just as the train was leaving the station.

The attacks took advantage of low security areas. No doubt, someone is going to suggest security checks at US airport entrances and exits. I can see it coming.

You might have improved air safety by doing safety checks to get into the concourses and gate areas, but you’ve created a greater risk outside those checkpoints. Shift the checkpoint to the counter area, and you shift it again. Move it to the airport entry area, and again, the target of opportunity moves along.

There are always more targets than there are safety officials to protect. Protect transit hubs, they’ll target schools. Protect schools, they’ll target museums. Protect museums, they’ll target parks. Protect parks, they’ll target buses. Protect buses, they’ll target department stores.

The increased security is as much to give the illusion of safety as it is to deter attack. More security cameras wont prevent attacks, but it can help track down the perpetrators after the fact.

Those are the realities.

And it would be a logistical nightmare. TSA screening at US airports is already a mess.

When I was in one Malaysian airport last month, they did the security screening at the gate, though there was a customs baggage X-ray right after the ticket counter. It was a regional airport, though, and the gate area had enough floor space to accommodate a line of 200-300 people. That model would not work at some major airports, especially dinosaurs like LaGuardia.

Hartsfield Jackson Airport in Atlanta is considering firing the TSA and hiring a private security firm to handle things because people are bitching about the long lines. I have no idea how that will be less expensive and more efficient, but if new regulations and requirements are put in place, like stopping everyone walking into every door, it’s not going to get better no matter who is in charge of security.

The President isn’t going to drop everything to return to the US because of an attack on a foreign country, not even the US. The President remains in full contact and briefed by his staff. The AF1 is a mobile WH with all the capabilities to direct US forces worldwide in a crisis. Heck, it was designed to keep the President safe during a nuclear attack.

No, Dark. It’s a fair bet that our daily average in weight of ordnance exceeds this amount now (more than 31,000 pounds, ie half a B-52’s potential load). We are hitting every valid target we can identify under the current RoE. The only way to increase attacks is to modify the RoE, leading inevitably to more civilian casualties. As for arms, some adjustments may be necessary but it is obvious that our allies have more now than they can effectively use. Including more groups would lead to more and more of our equipment falling into the proverbial “wrong hands.”
I think our present course, improved training and intelligence, is the right one. It will take time but it is what we have.

That is a failure of intellect-to fail to ascribe normal human motivations to “the other.” The use of raw power can suppress the ability of your enemy to achieve that revenge, but it is difficult, expensive, and ultimately fruitless.

We need to try to treat people fairly and decently, and above all to straighten our backs and at least pretend that we are not afraid of terrorists in our daily lives. Yes, take some precautions, but let us deny the terrorists the thing they want most-our fear.

In Brooklyn, there’s a stretch of Atlantic Avenue near Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill that has a significant Muslim population. There’s also a significant Muslim population in Queens and Manhattan.

So every time a terrorist bombs somewhere, the POTUS must drop whatever he’s doing, wherever he/she is, and abruptly change plans to accommodate the terrorists need for attention?

Apparently the only thing he should be doing is sitting in the Oval Office looking solemn, since he is literally doing everything else already.

Also, can we get a roll call on what the other heads of state are doing?

Thank you for satisfying my curiosity about your handle. Love this website.
We had a fire in 2013 and the next year we had so many Mariposa Lilies. The last couple of years - not quite as common.
My favorites are Star Tulip Inyo calochortus, Calochortus albus and Plummers Mariposa Lily. I am not sure how to make the links work but here is a link from Flickr that is supposed to be open to anyone.
