Awful news from Belgium this morning: Brussels attacks: At least 31 dead at Zaventem and Maelbeek.

At least 31 people have been killed and many seriously injured in attacks at Brussels international airport and a city metro station.

Twin blasts hit Zaventem airport at 07:00 GMT, killing 11 and injuring 81, Belgium’s health minister said.

Another explosion struck Maelbeek metro station an hour later. Twenty people were killed, Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur said.

Ted Cruz and Donald Trump immediately started trying to capitalize politically on this act of mass murder, of course.

New Yorkers, where was Trump on 9/11/01? And what did he say immediately afterward?

No sympathy for the victims, nothing positive at all. Just scrambling to the top of the rubble pile to make cheap political points.

Where the fuck is the humanity? Oh, never mind - these are Republican presidential candidates we’re talking about here. They have none.

Security theater. As long as the TV stations get some footage during a stand-up segment every one is safer, don’t you know?

Judging from the BBC reporting, the airport bombers were by the ticket counters, and not even near the security checkpoints. The metro bomb was detonated from inside one carriage, just as the train was leaving the station.

The attacks took advantage of low security areas. No doubt, someone is going to suggest security checks at US airport entrances and exits. I can see it coming.

True. TSA will step up visibility without really stepping up security.

They can suggest it, but they’d be shown the door on grounds that moving security lines outside the terminal would just make travelers vulnerable to the (S)VBIEDs* that are Daesh’s stock-in-trade.

Every kind of security checkpoint just shifts the target of opportunity and shifts the crowds to another point.

You might have improved air safety by doing safety checks to get into the concourses and gate areas, but you’ve created a greater risk outside those checkpoints. Shift the checkpoint to the counter area, and you shift it again. Move it to the airport entry area, and again, the target of opportunity moves along.

There are always more targets than there are safety officials to protect. Protect transit hubs, they’ll target schools. Protect schools, they’ll target museums. Protect museums, they’ll target parks. Protect parks, they’ll target buses. Protect buses, they’ll target department stores.

The increased security is as much to give the illusion of safety as it is to deter attack. More security cameras wont prevent attacks, but it can help track down the perpetrators after the fact.

Those are the realities.

And it would be a logistical nightmare. TSA screening at US airports is already a mess.

When I was in one Malaysian airport last month, they did the security screening at the gate, though there was a customs baggage X-ray right after the ticket counter. It was a regional airport, though, and the gate area had enough floor space to accommodate a line of 200-300 people. That model would not work at some major airports, especially dinosaurs like LaGuardia.

Organize air strikes to deliver at least 1000lbs of ordnance on Daesh for every person killed in these attacks. Step up provision of arms to those opposing the so-called Islamic State in Syria, Iraq, Libya, Egypt, and anywhere else Daesh shows itself.

The best security is good police and intelligence work to prevent the attacks before they happen. Can’t stop them all however, especially in a country like the US where firepower is so readily available.

Overshadowed by the Brussels attack was yet another mass shooting - a family gunned down in a murder suicide - 5 dead.

The body count continues rising daily from the carnage we inflict on ourselves - usually by people known to the victims. Unfettered and ready access to firearms trumps reasonable restrictions and enforcement of existing gun laws uniformly across the nation.

Hartsfield Jackson Airport in Atlanta is considering firing the TSA and hiring a private security firm to handle things because people are bitching about the long lines. I have no idea how that will be less expensive and more efficient, but if new regulations and requirements are put in place, like stopping everyone walking into every door, it’s not going to get better no matter who is in charge of security.

You would think, ha, that people would figure out what works and what doesn’t just by, oh, looking at what works and what doesn’t.

Decisions made in fear and anger NEVER turn out well. And yet, this is what happens, over and over.

The foreign policy expert added to Guthrie and Lauer that the U.S. must support its allies at a sensitive time like this, rather than alienate supporting countries. “We’ve got to stand in solidarity with our European allies,” she said. “I know that Americans have every reason to be frightened by what they see. … We have to intensify our efforts to keep America safe.”

It’s not a vacation. The president is conducting diplomatic mission and expanding US economic opportunities. And you’ll hear GOPers bitch that he didn’t get to meet dissidents (because that’s what’s also left on the agenda if he leaves).

The President isn’t going to drop everything to return to the US because of an attack on a foreign country, not even the US. The President remains in full contact and briefed by his staff. The AF1 is a mobile WH with all the capabilities to direct US forces worldwide in a crisis. Heck, it was designed to keep the President safe during a nuclear attack.

Optics my ass. It’s a right wing smear campaign that repeats the same nonsense from the past 7 years. Irrational hate of the president even when the President is doing things that the same GOP was proposing doing before President Obama was elected.

The President travels with a complete setup that still enables him to do his job. He’s never truly off the clock. He can stay in Cuba and finish the trip there and then get back to DC like normal. Nothing prevents him from doing both.

No, Dark. It’s a fair bet that our daily average in weight of ordnance exceeds this amount now (more than 31,000 pounds, ie half a B-52’s potential load). We are hitting every valid target we can identify under the current RoE. The only way to increase attacks is to modify the RoE, leading inevitably to more civilian casualties. As for arms, some adjustments may be necessary but it is obvious that our allies have more now than they can effectively use. Including more groups would lead to more and more of our equipment falling into the proverbial “wrong hands.”
I think our present course, improved training and intelligence, is the right one. It will take time but it is what we have.

Good ol’ Crunchy Con, Benedict Optionin’ Rod Dreher is pimping hate blog Gates of Vienna today in the wake of the bombings…

The future belongs to leaders like Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who gave a powerful speech a week ago today, on Hungary’s national holiday Here it is, with English subtitles; a bit of the transcript follows:

The main danger to Europe’s future does not come from those who want to come here, but from Brussels’ fanatical internationalism. [Note: By “Brussels,” he means the European Union. — RD] We should not allow Brussels to place itself above the law. We shall not allow it to force upon us the bitter fruit of its cosmopolitan immigration policy. We shall not import to Hungary crime, terrorism, homophobia and synagogue-burning anti-Semitism. There shall be no urban districts beyond the reach of the law, there shall be no mass disorder. No immigrant riots here, and there shall be no gangs hunting down our women and daughters. We shall not allow others to tell us whom we can let into our home and country, whom we will live alongside, and with whom we will share our country.

We know how these things go. First we allow them to tell us whom we must take in,
then they force us to serve foreigners in our own country. In the end we find ourselves being told to pack up and leave our own land.

Therefore we reject the forced resettlement scheme, and we shall tolerate neither blackmail, nor threats.

The time has come to ring the warning bell. The time has come for opposition and resistance.

The entire transcript can be read at Gates of Vienna.

To be clear, we don’t know whether the terrorists who did this were home-grown or came with the migrating masses. That’s not the point. The point is that Europe is already full of alienated, militant young Muslim men — and European leaders are importing more and more of them by the day. This is not going to end well for Europe. Hungary, it will be fine. [UPDATE: Let me revise that opinion in light of the fact that Hungary’s fertility rate is absolutely cratering. — RD]

Nice. The Eurabia theory is alive and well in Benedict Option Land. Hide the Christians, Rod! The swarthy Arab masses are coming for YOOOOUUUUUU!!!!!

Bombing people into the Stone Age often results in hard feelings that really don’t go away. Genocide is bad, you know? So, trying to eliminate Daesh by bombing towns indiscriminately will only provoke more retaliation by Daesh or some other group.

Charlie Hebdo was attacked January 2015. The Paris gunmen attacked in November. And then these bombings today. Maybe there were smaller ones I don’t remember reading about, but while these are all terrible, they hardly constitute “civil war and bloodshed unseen on the continent since the days of Hitler.” Spencer is addressing his fellow nativists and racists, whipping up their fear and hatred.

Meanwhile, Europeans, for the most part, go about their days peacefully and calmly. The current situation is not anything like Europe before 1914, or before Hitler seized power in Germany.

150
calochortus  Mar 22, 2016 • 8:56:49am

I find it distressing on both an intellectual level and moral one that so many people think that attacks that include killing innocent civilians will deter terror attacks.

Aside from the obvious moral issues, these folks fail to ask themselves “How would I feel about my family being “collateral damage” in a strike by a foreign country? Would I say, ‘Oh if only I had stopped my countrymen/coreligionists from committing the dastardly crime that precipitated this strike?’ Or perhaps ‘I have lost everything through no fault of my own. My innocent children are dead. I have nothing to live for but revenge.’ “
That is a failure of intellect-to fail to ascribe normal human motivations to “the other.” The use of raw power can suppress the ability of your enemy to achieve that revenge, but it is difficult, expensive, and ultimately fruitless.

We need to try to treat people fairly and decently, and above all to straighten our backs and at least pretend that we are not afraid of terrorists in our daily lives. Yes, take some precautions, but let us deny the terrorists the thing they want most-our fear.

And Cruz is the lesser of the two extremists heading up the GOP. Trump wants to ban Muslims.

Taken together, the GOP wants to ignore the 1A, violate civil rights of Americans across the nation, but remember, you must stand up to the government with your unfettered access to firearms.

As long as you’re white. Otherwise, you’re dead meat.

Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has died

I went looking for news about Ford’s death, and I found this piece in the Toronto Star. This bit jumped out:

He seemed to live by his own rules. Exploding grenades propelled him into the air, they didn’t shatter his facade. The more he sunk into the morass of personal excess…the more entrenched, though narrowed, his appeal.

If he was a one-trick pony, the crowd at the carnival seemed mesmerized every time.

There are some communities with significant Muslim populations. Here, in the NYC metro area, there’s Paterson and Jersey City in NJ that are most notable (people tend to congregate and live with their own communities since it’s easier to find prayer groups, food, social interactions, etc.). In Brooklyn, there’s a stretch of Atlantic Avenue near Brooklyn Heights/Cobble Hill that has a significant Muslim population. There’s also a significant Muslim population in Queens and Manhattan.

He’s such a disgusting piece of shit.

One of my co-workers had a sister in law at the airport getting ready for a college trip to Poland. His SIL was wounded in the leg, and one of her classmates standing near her was more seriously hurt.

My co-worker is a black guy from the Congo, by the way… His wife is Belgian. He’s the kind of guy Trump would deport. Despite nearly losing a relative this morning, he’s said today that living in fear is what the terrorists want, and we shouldn’t give in.

All I’ll say is, these terrorist cocksuckers keep attacking the wrong places.

“We say unequivocally that we do not countenance ad hominem attacks, and we take great offense to those that are levied against the United States of America from our stage,” said AIPAC president Lillian Pinkus said on Tuesday in a written statement at the conference, according to Politico. “While we may have policy differences, we deeply respect the office of the president of the United States and our president, Barack Obama.”

Representative Ted Poe (R-TX of course): Our Strategy Against ISIS Is a Complete Failure

“Today’s bombings illustrate that ISIS still maintains operational networks in Europe capable of carrying out attacks in the capital of the European Union even as security services are on high alert,” said Poe, who is also a member of the House Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats.

“It is clear that our current strategy against ISIS - which has allowed the terrorist organization to retain a haven from which to plan and launch attacks for nearly two years - is a complete failure and needs to be reassessed.

Good thing this charlatan wasn’t around in 1945:
“Today’s kamikaze attacks illustrate that Imperial Japan still maintains operational forces in the Pacific capable of carrying out attacks against our forces. Some people want to be scared, Shiplord.

And when they find a source that will scare them like they want to be scared (enter Fox News), they tune out everything else - any resource that could put their minds at ease becomes suspect, because they got their scared on and any facts to the contrary are just trying to lull them into a false sense of security.

I’m starting to believe that for some people, fear is a drug far superior in its rush to heroin or cocaine or meth or crack or anything. Because people who become hooked on it never, ever want to give it up.

Ted Cruz just named Phil Gramm his economic advisor.

The distinguishing feature of Gramm’s career in public service is hostility to regulation in almost every form. “Gramm, with his Southerner’s mistrust of big government, believes that markets, left to their own devices, eventually will find the most efficient way of bringing together buyers and sellers,” wrote former Securities and Exchange Chairman Arthur Levitt in his memoir, “Take on the Street.” “‘Unless the waters are crimson with the blood of investors,’ he exclaimed in one meeting, with a finger in my chest, ‘I don’t want you embarking on any regulatory flights of fancy.’”

The foundation’s donation was made while Bondi considered pursuing fraud violations related to Trump University. She never did. Bondi also endorsed Trump for the presidency earlier this month.

They’re recycling their ebola bullshit.

Old man rant: Why in hell are so many of my fellow seniors so fearful? They seem to be afraid of their own shadows most of the time. Fox News leads them around by a ring in their noses, to be sure, but they have to be susceptible in the first place. They flatly refuse to believe, for example, that we are bombing Daesh every single fucking day or that the crime rate here at home is barely half what it was in 1980. Relax, people, it isn’t nearly as scary as it was when we were young: hundreds of dead a week in Vietnam; brutal, out of control cops everywhere; hair-trigger nuclear standoff with the Soviets; large blocs of the population not allowed to vote. It must be some secret brain rotting chemical in Geritol (which I don’t use) or subliminal crazy messages in Bonanza re-runs (which I don’t watch).

Now aren’t you glad Twitter lets you post a screenshot of a whole paragraph?

BBL

Turkey is our ally too, and is a NATO member just like Belgium. 35 people were killed by a car bomb in Ankara a little over a week ago, 4 were killed in Istanbul market on Sunday, including three Israelis. Those deaths barely even registered on the American news radar, and nobody felt the need to upend Obama’s schedule over them.

It would be nice if Republicans stopped cynically dry humping corpses for political gains, and when those corpses are more likely to be white and have died in the “West.”

To the extent they ever would, fee-fees are not going to have a chance to calm down and make nice, not even in the sense they did in 2008 on the Dem side, where Clinton was still running but the writing on the wall was in permanent ink.

Large segments of the GOP aren’t going to embrace Trumpism no matter how much time they have because they recognize that makes the GOP a white nationalist party instead of a conservative one. As I said last year, if Trump is the GOP nominee the GOP will be the first electorally significant fascist party in US history.

The modesty of Donald Trump.

I am the most successful person ever to run for president. Nobody’s ever been more successful than me. I have the best words. I am the most fabulous whiner.

I am the best builder. Nobody builds walls better than me. I build the best product. Nobody can build a wall like Trump. I’ve always had people say, “Donald, you have the most beautiful hands.” I have the steadiest hands. I have a very good brain.

Somebody made the statement that Donald Trump has built or owns the greatest collection of golf courses, ever, in the history of golf. And I believe that is 100 percent true. I have the best courses in the world.

I went to one of the best schools.

On trade, there’s nobody more conservative than me. I’m the most conservative when it comes to military, when it comes to the border, when it comes to security, when it comes to illegal immigration: all of these things. I think I’m the most conservative person there is. I am the only one who can fix our southern border. There is nobody more against Obamacare than me.

I could fix TV talk shows that are doing poorly. There is tremendous talent out there waiting to be tapped, and nobody sees it!

I am the worst thing that ever happened to ISIS.

I will be the greatest jobs president God ever created. Nobody knows jobs like I do. I will create jobs like no one else.

Nobody has more respect for women than I do.

No one has done more for people with disabilities than me.

I will help the veterans like no one else.

No one has done so much for equality as I have.

I am the only one who can beat Hillary Clinton. I am Hillary Clinton’s worst nightmare.

Nobody understands politicians like I do.

I am more presidential than anybody, other than the great Abe Lincoln.

Nobody is more pro-Israel than I am. Nobody but Donald Trump will save Israel. I have studied this issue in great detail — I would say actually greater by far than anybody else. I am the most militaristic person on that stage.

I have proven to be far more correct about terrorism than anybody. It’s not even close.

My primary consultant is myself.

I am the least racist person you will ever meet.

Nobody reads the Bible more than me.

I am very modest. I am the most humble celebrity.

I’m treated very unfairly.

I am the only one who can make America truly great again.

I am the worst thing that ever happened to the establishment.

I am the best to win the general election.

A good example of the seriousness with which elements of the gun culture treat the whole subject of lethal weaponry:
How Many Fire Extinguishers Will A 500 S&W Magnum Go Through?
(charged fire extinguishers, btw)
How many charged fire extenguishers will a 500 S&W Magnum go through?
Still, this might be useful if it encourages the RWNJ/militia types in their delusion that small arms will “knock an APC over on its side” or penetrate tank armor.

Many who participated walked away with a much different perspective on the Islamic faith.

“What I learned here today that I did not understand at all about Islam or the Muslims is that they really respect all nations, and believe that it’s OK to have many religions,” said Carol Peterson, a participant from Peace Lutheran, speaking after the February event. “They believe that basically there’s one God. I was under the impression that Muslims wanted all of us to be one, wanted us to be like they are. But they respect us. I didn’t know that, and that blew my mind — because I thought that was the purpose of all this turmoil in our world. I thought they wanted us to become Muslim.”

I was never a race fan until Lance told Katie Couric he had cancer. After that, I was a fan of Jeannie Longo. Both were busted for doping. Makes more sense to dope up the bike. But people with motors built in have been busted recently, too.

re: #429 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

So every time a terrorist bombs somewhere, the POTUS must drop whatever he’s doing, wherever he/she is, and abruptly change plans to accommodate the terrorists need for attention?

Apparently the only thing he should be doing is sitting in the Oval Office looking solemn, since he is literally doing everything else already.

Also, can we get a roll call on what the other heads of state are doing?

Thank you for satisfying my curiosity about your handle. Love this website.
We had a fire in 2013 and the next year we had so many Mariposa Lilies. The last couple of years - not quite as common.
My favorites are Star Tulip Inyo calochortus, Calochortus albus and Plummers Mariposa Lily. I am not sure how to make the links work but here is a link from Flickr that is supposed to be open to anyone.
