Currently in AZ, Cruz is not in second place. Instead, the “others” have more totals than Cruz.

But that will change by the end of the night.

Still, it’s kind of telling, that in AZ the only GOP candidate with a real following is Drumpfskind.

Repost from downstairs. I think it has been self-evident for a while now…but I think that literally every person of legal voting age in this country needs to see it in black and white:

Anyone who thinks they are taking a principled stand against Trump who also refuses to vote for Secretary Clinton is not, in fact, principled in the slightest.

CNN estimates that Hillary is +17 delegates in AZ. Unless ID and UT are blowout losses, that means she’ll likely end up ahead on the night, and two of Bernie’s little white caucuses will have been hurled against the wall for nothing.

Arizona looks to be setting the stage for the last act of this political theater: Bernie winning caucuses that do little to help his delegate deficit, while Hillary manages big wins in closed primaries that allow her to continue pulling away.

Serious LOL material here: a guy who isn’t in the race coming in third, with over 57,000 votes? Not to mention the entire GOP clown car seems to have made it onto the ballot (including Mystery Candidate T. Cook - maybe it IS Apple’s CEO?). Did they print up the ballot last October, and never updated it?

He’ll try to keep the myth of the horse-race going, even though the Sanders horse is now just limping along, waiting for the Clinton horse to lock up the nomination. Then and only then will the media get out the captive bolt gun.

And even once that happens and “Feel the Bern” has put down, the delusional screaming of the sandbaggers will be piteous to hear.

The entire “combat sports” field plays a bigger role in American life than some may think.

MMA now dominates professional wrestling, even here in San Diego. Local gyms have lots of young guys dreaming of MMA glory. Other forms like kick boxing have never really taken off, for some reason. Used to be lucha libre was big in Tijuana but I don’t know how it’s doing these days but I think the glory years are past.

Arguable betting and fantasy football is even a bigger field. But we are behind the Brits in our betting addictions I think, other than lottery, to which we Americans are addicted.

This is the popular underbelly of Americana.

Today was supposed to be the “comeback” of Bernie’ campaign, that all the big contests ahead favored him and he’d start eating into Hillary’s delegate lead. Instead, it looks like another night of his trying to portray lily-white states as “big wins” and that he has “momentum” when he really ended the night losing more ground to her.

Bill Maher had a segment recently about how the “self esteem” movement has led to the rise of Trump. Berniacs have the same temperament as Trumpsters in many ways, IMHO.
Berniacs just don’t have as bellicose a Great Leader.

[Maher] says this is what happens when you tell people that the most important thing is to love themselves, when you hand out trophies just for participation and when you don’t discipline your kid for kicking the seat in front of him on an airplane.

Looks like Sanders managed to actually shorten Hillary’s delegate lead tonight by a bit while still losing in net votes because the Idaho caucus had typically caucus levels of turnout. At some point we should really confront how un-democratic caucuses are.

While an Idaho primary wouldn’t have had substantially different results it almost certainly would have gotten more participants. Also, not being able to cast a secret vote in a caucus is kind of shitty and chilling for those folks who’d like their vote to be personal and private.

Also, Sanders supporters have convinced themselves that Arizona’s Dem Primary was rigged for Clinton, because of course they have.

It is up to the parties themselves to determine how inclusive and democratic they make their nominating process. Just like with private corporations: each shareholder might hold one vote per share, but there are often statutes and stipulations that water down those votes.

I think at the national level the Dems should just ban caucuses and go with primaries across the board, ideally using mail in / drop off ballots like they do for all elections in Oregon. That would facilitate participation by all interested members, produce the most votes and be the easiest to administer. I’d let it up the State Parties themselves whether they want open or closed primaries, but I personally have serious doubts as to whether open primaries actually produce the party “buy in ” by independents that they’re intended to. I think it’s better strategically to incentivize Democratic Party membership.

Also, all States should be forced to hold their contests for both Party’s on the same day. It just wastes money and duplicates costs have Sec State offices, counties, districts, precincts, etc setting up for elections on two different days weeks apart. Nobody interested in responsible governance should tolerate that bullshit.

Commentary from PM Turnbull:
“For all intents and purposes there are no internal borders in Europe and their external borders are difficult to manage,” Mr Turnbull said.
“Australia is better placed than many of our European counterparts in dealing with the threat of terrorism because of the strength of our intelligence and security agencies, our secure borders and our successful multicultural society; one that manages to be both secure and free.”

Labor leader Bill Shorten rightly called this ‘hand-out advice’.
It’s easy to trash the immigration problem Europe is facing when we don’t have a contiguous landmass with a region suffering from severe and intractable war stresses. Our border protection regime relies mostly upon our geographical isolation. We have a great-bloody moat which is well-patrolled by a navy that has the benefit of hundreds of miles in which to turn back people arriving by boat. In the past we have even paid people smugglers kickbacks. Those who do get close enough are interred in facilities in impoverished countries and have their claims placed in a circular file for years and years.
It has been said that our policy is humane in that our desire to prevent deaths at sea has lead to us imprisoning those who had the indecency to not drown.
And it also helps that the electorate is xenophobic enough to accept this, or ignorant enough to dismiss it.

Lastly, while the suggestion is that the Shengen zone is helping to contribute to terrorism, all indications are that the Paris and Brussels attackers were not refugees. This is plainly a dog-whistle. And since the de facto election season has begun, it makes more sense.
New Tory douchebag, same as the old Tory douchebag. Only more articulate and avuncular.

No but the National Party Leadership can set rules for the Convention that incentivize and punish certain practices. They’ve done this in the past attempting to shape the schedule, ruling that Florida and Michigan’s delegates only got half a vote in 2008 for breaching the early primary rules. There’s no reason they can’t do something similar to make caucuses an unattractive option.

But it seems that they have plenty of reasons that they shouldn’t. Namely, the NPL wants to have final say in who gets the nod.

His place of birth has not been revealed, but authorities know he left Syria in 2013. He’s implicated in the November attacks in Paris.

A suspect arrested in Brussels this morning was not Najim Laachraoui, thought to be one of three men in a CCTV image taken before the Zaventem airport attack, some Belgian media are now saying

The newspaper, DH, which first reported the story, says the man detained earlier on Wednesday in the Anderlecht district had been misidentified.

Police and prosecutors have not commented on the reports and are due to hold a news conference within the next hour. [NOTE: Timestamp for this was 19:20 BT/UTC]

Here’s the correction for the misidentification from Belgium newspaper La Derneire Heure

The information about the arrest of the suspect Najim Laachraoui this morning at Anderlecht in Brussels attacks has proved to be false.

We present our apologies to users for this error. From several authoritative sources, contacted directly by our journalist on the ground, confirming the arrest of Naeem Laachraoui, we stated [his arrest] on the website of La dernière Heure - Sports.

Without going into the details to release us from our own responsibility, there seems to have been confusion between individuals at the level of these same sources. Other Belgian and foreign media also affirmed thereport this Wednesday morning, quoting judicial sources.

Great article on him on BBC.com

Following the group’s dissolution, Phife continued to battle diabetes, reuniting with the group for occasional live shows - partly to help cover the medical costs of his type 2 diabetes (often mis-reported as type 1).
He suffered renal failure in 2008 and received a transplant from his wife - but was back on the waiting list for a kidney four years later.

Morning!

So, Joke Scarborough is very disappointed in the President and the bad optics and tone deafness of him being in Cuba watching a baseball game. And then I saw he was going to have on Rudi Giuliani and I couldn’t change the channel fast enough. I knew where that was going to go.

And the Today show just had slimy Ted Cruz on and he is disappointed that Obama and Clinton are so so politically correct they cannot even say “Radical Islamic Jihadism” and that is the whole problem with terrorism in this world. Or, something. And he danced around Guthrie’s questions about how he is going to patrol American Muslim neighborhoods to root out Radical Jihadists and about how NYC mayor Bloomberg had a similar program that in 6 years found not one connection to nay terrorist or terror plot. And after not answering he smiled his slimy smile like he knows he is full of shit but he is going to serve it up anyway.

Just once I’d like to see someone ask what will change if you say Radical Islamic Jihadism…and how does that make it any more effective for stopping terrorists. Just once. In the past few years I have heard not one “journalist” ask that very simple question.

Arrrrrgggghhh!!! I can’t stand it. The stupidity…the politics…

Short answers: No, and no. Ryan is dedicated and he’s not going to just walk away. Sucks for him, I guess. Could be (whispers suggest anyway) that the House is in play and Ryan could just go back to devising new and devious ways of depriving the most vulnerable citizens of any government assistance just to save a buck that might have been gained simply by reforming the tax code!
He’s edgier about the horrendous things he’s willing to put people through just for the sheer thrill of being called a ‘fiscal wonk’ since he grew that beard.

So, this morning Jeb comes out and announces his endorsement for Ted Cruz. Please clap.

Well, this is the sound of my one hand clapping since there’s no space between Cruz and Trump. Both are busy proposing policies that would trash the Constitution - bans on Muslims entering the US, creating a police state targeting a specific religious community, building walls and otherwise making grandiose statements about security that have no basis in reality.

Bush thinks that Cruz stands for American values? Cruz thinks the way to fight ISIL is to carpet bomb somewhere in the Middle East. That’s the American values Bush thinks we have or should have?

That’s aspirational?

Stick a fork in the GOP because they’re done. All the caterwauling over how Trump is not a true GOPer falls flat when you do an actual comparison of positions and you realize that the only real difference is style, not substance. Trump’s right in line with the rest of the GOP.

Newsflash: Daesh is still composed of totalitarian rotters who gloat about the deaths of civilians.

ISIS have claimed the deadly attacks in Brussels and released photographs showing jihadis handing out sweets to residents in Syria to celebrate the massacre in Europe.

Bags of sweets and other items were handed by militants to young children and men in the province of Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria.

The photos included a statement, describing how ISIS had distributed sweets to Muslims in ‘joy of the blessed attack against the Crusaders in Brussels.’

No women are shown in any of the photos and the men handing out the sweets appear to be wearing shoulder holsters.

The news comes as the death toll for the Brussels attacks was confirmed to have risen to 34.

Trump’s odds of getting a majority of the delegates by June 7 dropped slightly, while Hillary is still on target to get the Democratic nomination. I don’t know what would be worse for the GOP: nominating Trump for President or the chaos of a convention battle for the nomination.

The former, by a long margin.

Last nights results were what I thought they’d be. Sick of cries of fraud whenever Bernie loses. It’s not a surprise that Clinton won Arizona A good sized population of retirees and Hispanic voters. Anyhow that’s Bernie’s first night since NH where he’s actually had a net gain in delegates but I’d call it a hiccup for Clinton more than anything to be seriously worried about.
Arizona- not New Mexico, goddamn even when I’m well rested, I’m off.

Newsflash: Daesh is still composed of totalitarian rotters who gloat about the deaths of civilians.

I note the use of the word “crusaders” in that statement. People of the Western world need to hear that as some of the hatred in the Middle East goes that far back. And that means every funky, messy thing the West has done since the Crusades also adds in. That is a large amount of hatred that weighs so heavily into all the politics between the two worlds.

Also it is interesting to weigh the words…Crusaders on one scale platen…Radical Islamic Terrorists on the other.

And in Arizona, early voting by mail was an option (one of the reasons Rubio did so well).

I wrote an article yesterday for the Illinois newspapers I work for about the debacle there on primary day that resulted from same day registration at the polls. Registered voters left because the lines were so long. A separate line for the same day registration people might have mitigated that.
And, again, early mail voting was available. The county clerk is urging people to take advantage of that option for November.

Assuming facts not in evidence. You assume he doesn’t understand how hard it is.

NJ has shut numerous locations as cost cutting measure, which means the lines to get paperwork done at the DMV is longer than ever. Hours for getting certain things done is also more limited.

NY also has limited hours. Other states have gone even further in curbing hours at DMVs or shuttered/consolidated locations.

As someone posted yesterday…where were the media and all the Republican’s concern about the recent terror attacks in Ankara and Instanbul???

Oh yeah…wrong color of people. Wrong politics. Can’t use Radical Islam Jihadist as easily to bash Obama and Clinton when there are terrorists attacking Muslim countries.

U.S. Uncut - Days Before Brussels, There Were 2 Devastating Terror Attacks the Media Ignored

While the world mourns the tragedy that killed at least 30 and injured 230 others in Brussels, Belgium, it’s important to also honor the victims of recent attacks in Turkey. Both of those attacks happened in the last ten days, although major broadcast media made almost no mention of it.

On Sunday, March 13, a car bomb in Ankara killed 36 people and injured over 100 nearby. And just days ago, an ISIS-affiliated suicide bomber killed four people in a busy tourist area in Istanbul. Many on Twitter pleaded with the world to show Turkey the same solidarity it so easily had with Paris in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo and Bataclan attacks, and now with Brussels after today’s bombing.

Politics is the answer. Always politics with the GOP. And I think I have had enough for the morning. Back to job/work searching.

Plotting the assassination of the president of the United States has to at least qualify as sedition (depending on how far he wants to go with this, it could be treason, but that’s a much higher bar because it requires actually making war against the United States). Doesn’t matter if you’re military or not, that’s not protected speech.

I’m really beginning to tire of the Bernie bros fanatics who think that Bernie’s going to somehow win the nomination, or otherwise prevent Hillary from getting the nomination. Dogmatic doesn’t even begin to explain it. Baffling BS and absolute refusal to consider the math of how primaries works just scratches the surface.

These people are in their own world, like a couple of Bernie bros who were in my timeline (right until one of them blocked me - boo frickin’ hoo - because I cited basic delegate math).

The facts are this:

Hillary’s up 300 delegates, not counting supers. The window in which Bernie can somehow gain enough delegates to overcome that total is closing, and there’s no chance he’ll win CA, NY, NJ, PA, etc., which would deliver a crushing blow. Hillary’s expected to win those states rather handily.

Apparently that gets ignored by the Bernie bros.

It’s frustrating as hell. They utterly are clueless to Bernie’s flaws as a candidate and that he’s well behind any candidate that got the nomination. I’m still not a huge Clinton fan I concede but I think she’d make a better candidate and president than Bernie would. Nothing they’ve shown me has convinced me he would be better. They like to show the polls but there has been little Republican and outside attacks on Bernie at this point and make no mistake, if he were to be nominated, it would be the Red Scare 3.0.

It’s probably in the form of something like Shut up DLC corporatist. I mean these people on the issues have their hearts in the right place but they have zero clue about reality and it doesn’t help that Robert Reich, an intelligent enough guy is egging them on and telling them that Bernie mathematically still has a chance which is technically true but ignoring things like what LH has already talked about. Last night was the first night since New Hampshire that Bernie gained delegates. Think about that and then tell me that Bernie still has a chance. He doesn’t need to quit or drop out but if he doesn’t want to but I don’t think it’s right to tell people to contribute to a campaign that has such a slim chance of winning while telling them their chances are good..

From the diary:

The next 2 weeks promise to be the best stretch of Bernie’s best of the entire campaign, and he could win every contest available on March 26 (Washington, Alaska and Hawaii), April 5 (Wisconsin) and April 9 (Wyoming). He will need to run up the score as much as he can in those states to keep alive whatever meager hopes there are of him winning the delegate race, because after those contests a string of delegate rich states that strongly favor Hillary Clinton follow.

340
HappyWarrior  Mar 23, 2016 • 9:01:49am

Bernie is still struggling in more diverse states. Arizona is much more diverse than Idaho and Utah are. That’s not to take anything away from his wins in Utah and Idaho but a viable Democratic candidate does not struggle that poorly with minority voters and still expect to win the GE. Hillary, I concede needs to work on some of her struggles with younger voters. I have no problem saying that but the problem is bigger for Bernie IMO since the voters he struggles with are more reliable voters. A weaker turnout among 18-29 year olds won’t be as bad if the Hispanic and African-American turnout isn’t as high.

That works too. I’m not a runner but that makes sense. The problem is and try telling this to Bernie supporters is that he is a flawed candidate with limited appeal. His base is white progressives and not much outside of that. They can bitch about the machinery of the Democratic Party all they want but the fact of the matter is Bernie performs against Hillary with Hispanics and African-Americans the way Republicans often do against Democrats. That’s uh not good if you’re trying to get the nomination of a party that has a diverse amount of people in it.

And how many True Muslims?

Really.

There are those people who simply look on Islam (or any religion) as part of their cultural heritage, observe the holidays and general precepts, but are not strict in its observance.

Then there are those who are more strict in their religious observances, but would not think of forcing it on anyone.

Then there are those who would force their religious beliefs on us by law, and those who would force them on us through acts of violence.

It is only the latter two groups who should be of concern to us, but people like DT and TC are ready to lump them all together…and then put them under surveillance to prevent “radicalization”.

They really should have read about the voting procedures in their own state. As I said, I don’t like the closed primaries. I see it from both sides but the states are allowed to make their own rules about these sort of things and people like your sister had ample time to switch party registration if they so desired. It’s not fraud at all.

I would say about 66% of Muslims in the US are observant, considering what I have seen. Keep in mind, Islam is a much looser faith in a lot of ways than Christianity, so so what “devout” looks like will be different.

If I were to guess a total population, I would say about 5-6 million, and growing quickly.

I should note that I have found a Mosque to avoid in my area. The Imam comes from Britain, and I think you can figure out where this is going.

Here’s the single link you need to give to anyone who “knows” Sanders is going to win: demrace.com. It allows you to play with the rest of the contests to figure out what it would take for Sanders to win. Here’s what someone put in:

I gave her zero wins. I gave him blowouts in every caucus and very large 16-point victories in every open or semi open primary, plus 10-point victories in every closed caucus. Last night, he beat my caucus numbers for UT and ID. I plugged in the actual numbers from last night’s races, which includes Hillary’s AZ victory. Sanders still loses.

And another “Bernie is Winning” diary at kos (based on a HuffPo story that’s long on speculation and short on facts, written by an English professor.)

dailykos.com

The thesis is that, when you discount early voting (which favors Clinton b/c they knew her when they voted but hadn’t heard Sanders’ message yet), Bernie is running even with or slightly ahead.

So, when you discount southern states, states with diverse populations, early voters and anyone who voted for Hillary for any reason at all (but mostly stupid, or low information, or old, or don’t use the internet, or whatever) Bernie is winning 100% of the voters who voted for Bernie.

Columbus has a fairly high average of Muslims too. But not the numbers of Detroit.

From World Population Statistics web site.

Columbus Population 2013

The current population of the city of Columbus, Ohio is estimated to be about 809,798, which is an increase of about 1.6% from the last record of the population. Columbus is the most populous city in the state of Ohio and the fifteenth-most populous city in the entire United States of America. Based on the total land area and the total population of the city, the population density of Columbus is about 3,624 people per square mile.

Religion in Columbus

The population of Columbus identifies with a religious affiliation at a lower rate than the national average. About 40% of the population identifies with an affiliation, compared to the national average of 49%. The largest religious affiliation in the city is the Roman Catholic Church, making up about 14% of the population. The next largest affiliation is the Baptist Church, which makes up about 5% of the population. The Muslim population of the city is larger than the average city in the United States. About 1.3% of the population

My math says 10,527 Muslims in Columbus, but that does not count the Metro area.

Bernie chose to campaign elsewhere instead of attending. It had nothing to do with whether or not AIPAC allowed him to make the speech.

Just looked up the case, it looks like it’s framed as a “religious liberty” case in that religious non-profits are challenging the birth control mandate in insurance coverage. Now, I don’t think that’s really religious liberty because your right to practice (and preach) your religion only extends so far as it doesn’t violate my right to not practice your (or any) religion. But Kennedy doesn’t see it that way.

Ah ha, good catch counselor.

Paul Ryan shrugs off Ayn Rand? Speaker renounces his past ‘makers and takers’ talk as ‘just wrong’

“I’m certainly not going to stand here and tell you I have always met this standard,” Ryan said. “There was a time when I would talk about a difference between ‘makers’ and ‘takers’ in our country, referring to people who accepted government benefits. But as I spent more time listening, and really learning the root causes of poverty, I realized I was wrong.”

“‘Takers’ wasn’t how to refer to a single mom stuck in a poverty trap, just trying to take care of her family. Most people don’t want to be dependent. And to label a whole group of Americans that way was wrong. I shouldn’t castigate a large group of Americans to make a point. So I stopped thinking about it that way—and talking about it that way. But I didn’t come out and say all this to be politically correct. I was just wrong.”

Bernie is winning with Bernie voters, you can’t deny that. // Sigh. People have heard Bernie’s message. I knew who Bernie Sanders was before a lot of people who love him knew who he was. Not bragging but I need to point that out if the professor here is going to insist that it’s people not knowing Bernie that causes them not to vote for him. I just don’t see Bernie as a good GE candidate or even a solid president, I also think his focus is too limited. Economic injustice is a problem. He’s right but he doesn’t see that a lot of things can’t simply be explained by economic inequality. And frankly his campaign’s condescending crap doesn’t feel inclusive at all. I don’t like people being called “low information” or it implied that they’re selling out progressivism or liberalism by not supporting Bernie but maybe that’s just me. I had a chance to feel the Bern and I haven’t felt it.

Is he talking about the primary or the general? Because if he’s talking about the primary, sure, some of that can probably sell upstate and in western New York because “New York values” is obviously about those heathens in the evil city. As Jimmy Buffett sang:

As a child on the farm
I was warned of the wiles of the city

As the dirt in the skies of the city

Well they say the proximity warps their minds
Until they’re shooting one another just pass the time
And we live it appears

No surprise there. Israeli computer coders and programmers are pretty freaking good.

A friend worked at The Columbus Dispatch and back in the 90s they went to a full production system that tied all their Macs into a mainframe computer that assembled all the input into the pages so that editorial, news, society, advertising, sports, graphics etc. all could work on their input and see it fit the layout. It was all based out of Israel.

Don’t think it matters if Cruz is talking about the primary or general. Trump’s got a pretty big advantage in the NY primary (home state/field advantage), and GOP sentiment runs strong upstate. Last time NY went GOP in presidential election was 1984. And today’s GOP would treat Reagan as a RINO.

re: #369 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

And how many True Muslims?

Really.

There are those people who simply look on Islam (or any religion) as part of their cultural heritage, observe the holidays and general precepts, but are not strict in its observance.

Then there are those who are more strict in their religious observances, but would not think of forcing it on anyone.

Then there are those who would force their religious beliefs on us by law, and those who would force them on us through acts of violence.

It is only the latter two groups who should be of concern to us, but people like DT and TC are ready to lump them all together…and then put them under surveillance to prevent “radicalization”.

IIRC, some of the younger “lone wolf” guys were basically cultural Muslims who weren’t observant, but who suddenly latched on to the jihadi thing (I can’t cite any specific articles as it would take to long to find the relevant details among the hundreds of bookmarks I have on the subject).

I think we need to stop focusing on the religious aspect so much and figure out what’s really attracting them to violent jihad against innocent people (terrorism)—is it a situation like with gangs, where they feel a sense of belonging & strength that they don’t find elsewhere? Is it a matter of suddenly being overcome with a desire to “defend” the ummah? If so, then why aren’t there many, many more of them among millions of Muslims here (especially the more observant ones)?

There are always going to be anomalies, but there MUST be a pattern that we’re missing here, one that groups like Da’esh are well aware of and are using to their advantage. We need to outsmart them, because using brute force, abandoning our freedoms, or trampling on American Muslim’s civil rights are not viable long-term solutions.

Fucking false, god dammit.

The onset of World War II created a significant shortage of professional baseball players, as more than 500 men left MLB teams to serve in the military. Many of them played on service baseball teams that entertained military personnel in the US or in the Pacific. MLB teams of this time largely consisted of young men, older players, and those with a military classification of 4F, indicating mental, physical, or moral unsuitability for service. Men like Pete Gray, a one-armed outfielder, got the chance to advance to the major leagues. However, MLB rosters did not include any black players through the end of the war.[74] Black players, many of whom served in the war, were still restricted to playing Negro league baseball.[75]

Wartime blackout restrictions, designed to keep outdoor lighting at low levels, caused another problem for baseball. These rules limited traveling and night games to the point that the 1942 season nearly had to be cancelled.[75] On January 14, 1942, MLB Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis wrote a letter to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and pleaded for the continuation of baseball during the war in hopes for a start of a new major league season. President Roosevelt responded, “I honestly feel that it would be best for the country to keep baseball going. There will be fewer people unemployed and everybody will work longer hours and harder than ever before. And that means that they ought to have a chance for recreation and for taking their minds off their work even more than before.”[76]

With the approval of President Roosevelt, spring training began in 1942 with few repercussions. The war interrupted the careers of stars including Stan Musial, Ted Williams, and Joe DiMaggio, but baseball clubs continued to field their teams.[77]

I’m sure they’re aware of the likelihood that they’re being monitored, just like MLK (and others) were during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) began monitoring Martin Luther King, Jr., in December 1955, during his involvement with the Montgomery bus boycott, and engaged in covert operations against him throughout the 1960s. FBI director J. Edgar Hoover was personally hostile toward King, believing that the civil rights leader was influenced by Communists. This animosity increased after April 1964, when King called the FBI ”completely ineffectual in resolving the continued mayhem and brutality inflicted upon the Negro in the deep South” (King, 23 April 1964). Under the FBI’s domestic counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO) King was subjected to various kinds of FBI surveillance that produced alleged evidence of extramarital affairs, though no evidence of Communist influence.

The FBI was created in 1909 as the Justice Department’s unit to investigate federal crimes. Hoover became FBI director in 1924 and served until his death in 1972. Throughout the 1930s the FBI’s role expanded when President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked the FBI to research ”subversives” in the United States, and Congress passed a series of laws increasing the types of federal crimes falling under the FBI’s jurisdiction. During World War II, the FBI was further authorized to investigate threats to national security. This loosely defined mission formed the heading under which the FBI began to investigate the civil rights movement. […]

re: #450 The Vicious Babushka

We defeat terrorism by going to baseball games. Which is why Major League Baseball essentially disbanded for years to defeat the Nazis.

So when is Ben quitting his drole life of tweeting to take up arms?

Reading the comments on that diary is hilarious. The moron who posted it keeps claiming no one is addressing the point of the “thesis” when they are by pointing out it’s an idiotic thesis.

I dare that sack of shit to say that to my face. Or better still, to a whole room of survivors. I’m not scared of a little shit like that, in fact, I’d feel a whole lot better using him to, shall we say, vent a little. What a putrid sac of protoplasm.
