In 2014, I released a song called “Ko Ki” in order to fundraise for a volunteering trip to Cambodia led by the wonderful non-profit organisation Raw Impact. At the beginning of 2015, I went to Cambodia, to help construct a community centre for the people of Ko Ki Village. This was an unforgettable experience – everything from the joy of playing games with some of the happiest kids I’ve ever seen, to the overwhelming realisation that I was able to use my love of music to benefit the lives of a community that barely even has access to clean water or electricity. Recently, I read that Raw Impact was embarking on its most ambitious project yet. After seeing the work that Raw Impact has done already, and being a part of one of their teams, there is no doubt in my mind that they can make this happen:

“This is the biggest thing we’ve ever done. 100 of the poorest families urgently need our help. The Cambodian Government have announced a bridge to join Phnom Penh with Gunty’s Island. This will force the relocation of 100 families currently living in slums. Every Piece Matters is about providing land for families so we can bring safe housing, primary education for their kids, rescue from debt slavery and provide a steady job for Mum and Dad. For every $5,000AUD pledged, one family can live on their own land.”

On that note, 100% of the proceeds generated by this song, from now until the end of June (when the fundraising campaign ends) will go directly to Raw Impact!

Also, I’ve decided if I ever become immortal, I’m wearing a flexible metal collar around my neck 24/7/365.24. Just to be on the safe side.

Won’t be watching (can’t afford the data to stream it) but does the second season include Electra? DD just isn’t DD without the other half of his soul. Feel free to spoiler tag it if need be.

Elektra shows up at the end of episode 4, and naturally complicates Matt’s and Daredevil’s life. Stick follows not long after, and pretty soon all hell breaks loose.

I won’t go into details, but there was apparently a huge ninja convention in NYC during filming.

Bernie Bro writes shitpost explaining why Trump might not be so bad. Hint: because he’s a liar.

Clinton supporters want you to believe that if Donald Trump gets elected, it would be some kind of massive disaster, that he might start a nuclear war or enact policies that are immensely damaging to marginalized groups. This is all based on the idea that Trump is some kind of insane person. But while many right nationalist politicians are true believers who have consistently expressed abhorrent views, we have strong reasons to think that Donald Trump is exploiting the right nationalist playbook for personal gain.

Donald Trump is conning the Republican Party. He could very well be the most moderate republican candidate, and he may be to the left of Clinton on some issues, like regime change and trade deals. We can’t be sure what he would do, and any person who is confident that Donald Trump is definitely a crazy person or a fascist is making claims based only on the statements Trump has made after he decided to get involved in national politics-the very point at which he is most likely to have begun trying to deceive us about what he thinks. The things people say and do before they start running tell us much more about what they’re likely to do than what they say and do after.

Bias Toward the Near:

But while Donald Trump is not a right nationalist, he is marketing himself as if he is one and most people believe he is one. He’s choosing to do this for strategic reasons-he recognizes that the public increasingly holds the neoliberal consensus exemplified by the establishments of both parties in contempt.

It’s goes on like that, an enormous self-righteous pantload intended to justify a willingness to gamble with other people’s lives.

His total lack of experience as an elected official seems to play little role in a lot of people who support him, either our of ideology or cynicism.

But it speaks volumes that so many Americans have such a low opinion of politicians and politics as usual that they believe a complete outsider with no political record could be an improvement.

30
goddamnedfrank  Mar 28, 2016 • 4:14:37am

What’s insane is the idea that the kind of amoral psychopathic personality that might cynically pretend to be a racist would shy away from enacting actual racist policies just to stay in power once power is attained. Hypothetically Trump can not be a racist per se and still not give a fuck about minority health and safety, along with anyone else’s for that matter. Minorities might just be the most easily positioned pawns in whatever game he thinks he’s playing, and while his whipping up sentiment against them could be entirely cynical and disingenuous it would still be absolutely monstrous and inexcusable.

He would probably think up some excuse about it not being truly classless or something.

Soviet society was a class society, but the upper classes realized that they had to keep it low key and not rub their wealth and privilege in the faces of the lower classes.

And their wealth was not just measured in bank accounts or stock portfolios, it was a matter of access: imported consumer goods, luxury vacations, better residences, the right to have their chauffeur drive them down the middle lane of the boulevards, etc.

Hey everyone…guess what Morning Joke kicked his show off with today?

You got it…Hillary emails!

Aparantly there is a new LA Times article that had Joe, Mika and their panel breathless. So, here is the article…and guess what…we’ve heard all this before.

The big news…interviews staff and aides.

LA Times - Clinton email probe enters new phase as FBI interviews loom

deral prosecutors investigating the possible mishandling of classified materials on Hillary Clinton’s private email server have begun the process of setting up formal interviews with some of her longtime and closest aides, according to two people familiar with the probe, an indication that the inquiry is moving into its final phases.

Those interviews and the final review of the case, however, could still take many weeks, all but guaranteeing that the investigation will continue to dog Clinton’s presidential campaign through most, if not all, of the remaining presidential primaries.

No dates have been set for questioning the advisors, but a federal prosecutor in recent weeks has called their lawyers to alert them that he would soon be doing so, the sources said. Prosecutors also are expected to seek an interview with Clinton herself, though the timing remains unclear.

Many legal experts believe that Clinton faces little risk of being prosecuted for using the private email system to conduct official business when she served as secretary of State, though that decision has raised questions among some about her judgment. They noted that using a private email system was not banned at the time, and others in government had used personal email to transact official business.

The bigger question is whether she or her aides distributed classified material in email systems that fell outside of the department’s secure classified system. But even if prosecutors determine that she did, chances she will be found criminally liable are low. U.S. law makes it a crime for someone to knowingly or willfully retain classified information, handle it in a grossly negligent manner or to pass it to someone not entitled to see it.

Clinton has denied using the email account to send or receive materials marked classified. Though some emails have since been deemed to be too sensitive to release publicly, Clinton’s campaign has attributed that to overzealous intelligence officials and “over-classification run amok.”

Legally it doesn’t matter if the emails were marked as classified or not, since government officials are obligated to recognize sensitive material and guard against its release. But legal experts noted that such labels would be helpful to prosecutors seeking to prove she knew the information was classified, a key element of the law.

“The facts of the case do not fit the law,” said Stephen Vladeck, a law professor at American University. “Reasonable folks may think that federal law ought to prohibit what Hillary did, but it’s just not clear to me that it currently does.”

Even so, her use of the private server, which was based at her home in New York, has become fodder for Clinton’s political foes as she campaigns to secure the Democratic nomination for president.

More blah…blah…blah…

There’s no way anyone should take that chance, and for the GOPers left to vote in primaries - your choices are between sociopaths and extremists. Exactly what they’ve been craving for years. This year’s primary race has shown everyone that the years of irrational hate, anger, and fear that the party has indoctrinated in the base have come back with a virulent hate that can only be scratched with the likes of Trump.

U.S. Allies ‘Borrowing’ Munitions To Drop On ISIS As U.S. Stockpiles Are Also In Question

There is a lot of political talk right now about the U.S. carrying the weight militarily for its allies, including NATO. One actual example of this is the recurring situation where, even in lower-intensity conflicts, our allies run out of guided air-to-ground munitions to drop on the enemy. Well, it has happening once again over Iraq and Syria, and the U.S. has stepped in like always as the big bomb and missile sugar daddy. But are even U.S. stockpiles up to the Pentagon’s strategic demands?

With the already huge demand for air-to-ground weapons by western nations only increasing, business is booming for suppliers. defensenews.com reports that Lockheed is upping production of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles from 500 to 650 missiles a month and quadrupling its capacity to build the Paveway series of laser guided bombs.

So, this weekend I made up a roast chicken, and happened to have on hand a mirepoix. So, for the first time I can remember, I was able to make chicken stock. OMG, what have I been missing all these years. I’ve used store bought stock all these years because who has time to scratch make stock (and whenever I have roasted chicken, I don’t have the mirepoix ingredients). Sure, I’ll add my own herbs/spices and fresh chicken to the soups, but it still isn’t the same.

Boy have I been missing out. Was able to make 2 quarts (it’s just the mrs and myself), and have frozen it away for good measure. The texture, taste, and aroma is simply divine. Nectar of the gods good.

Some of the AGMs are almost hand-built, much more like a SAAB than a Chevy. A busy producer might have only 50 or so in production at a time.

I wonder if we over depend on those precision weapons like we do stealth. A more balanced approach might be a better idea.

My half a decade old video card gave up the ghost over the weekend, and I had to replace it. So being the kind person that I am I put an Nvidia 980 in my wife’s PC because she’s still killing people online while I gave up on that a few years back .

I got her hand me down 760 and … it’s fantastic for my photos & lightroom.

I had no clue the amount of definition I was not seeing until I stuck the hand me down card in. IF you are a photographer and haven’t upgraded cards in a > 3 years, I recommend that you get a new card. You don’t have to go for the top of the line - you can round up pretty decent cards in the 120.00 -150.00 range if you shop around.

True, but Hellfire isn’t one of those missiles. Like Ford pickup trucks, they are designed for mass production. Remember that Hellfires were originally intended to be fired in large numbers against hoards of T-64s, T-72s, and T-80s swarming over West Germany during a long-dreaded Soviet invasion of Western Europe. That never came to pass, of course, but there is still a great deal of automation in the production of Hellfires.

A person’s religious freedoms are covered by the first amendment. An organization’s freedom of religion is only covered by the ability of a group of individuals to organize without government interference, also covered by the first amendment. Strict scrutiny is not needed, because strict scrutiny in this case obviously means “for Christians.”

No, it doesn’t. The federal RFRA and the state RFRAs have always been held as protecting religion in general, not just Christianity. The RFRA in Illinois is being invoked in a lawsuit against the city of Des Plaines for denying a building permit for a mosque.

Right. I very much doubt if LGBT advocacy groups were the only ones that raised hell that Deal would have vetoed this but you bet your ass he saw the writing on the wall when AMC threatened to take the Walking Dead out of their state, that the NFL was going to refuse their SB offer to Atlanta, etc. In the end, I am glad he’s vetoing it but the veto had nothing to do with it reflecting the “character of their people”, after all it did pass the legislature elected by Georgians and more to do with Deal not wanting to see his state as being a bad place for business. I’m not seeing any signs of a Eureka moment where a GOP governor realizes that being a homophobic asshole is as bad as being poor for business.

And right behind him is Ted “Carpet Bomb” Cruz. Even if GOP voters aren’t necessarily voting for Trump, they agree with a lot of his extreme stances. His position on Muslim refugees for example is something that many people voting for his opponents agree with as well.

He’s leading in delegate counts and the GOP polling. He’s also the first (and only candidate) to clear the Rule 40 hurdle. For all the bluster by other GOPers, he’s set to be the nominee. And they will fall in behind him.

Also, having about 40% consistently in all the polls, in a 3 way race no less, suggests he’s speaking for a substantial part of the GOP (and in some instances, he’s not even the most extreme on some of those issues - that’d be Cruz)…

Hellfire is a toy made to amuse 2LTs.

Someone else like to bluster about nuclear war, right through an ICBM strike on Washington DC in full animation. From Huffpo today. Claiming to be an existential threat to the US. Mere bluster? For now. A single nuke can ruin your whole day.

“If the American imperialists provoke us a bit, we will not hesitate to slap them with a pre-emptive nuclear strike,” the Korean subtitles read, according to a translation in The New York Times. “The United States must choose! It’s up to you whether the nation called the United States exists on this planet or not.”

He barely can manage to get support of his own caucus, all because he’s not sufficiently extreme enough (or push through ACA repeal bills at a steady enough clip knowing they’ll get vetoed by the president).

The GOP is off the rails, and the options are looking so bleak that GOP insiders are attempting to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Having read the book about the 9/11 commission, it seems the FBI has never been serious about dealing with Terrorism of most sorts.

At this point, maybe we should close the FBI, and break it into 3 pieces.

One that deals with Organized and Interstate Crime
One that would serve as an American version of MI5.
And one that deal with crime in the various Indian Nations. FBI is failing on this as well, as they should be picking up these, but are neglecting it.

Animal Rights Activists Disrupt St. Patrick’s Easter Mass To Protest Easter Ham

A group of seven animal rights activists disrupted a moment of silence during Easter Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown on Sunday, shouting, “Easter is a time for love. No more shedding animal blood!” as they were pulled from the hall by security guards. One member of the group, 23-year-old Jacob Martin, walked down the central isle with a bullhorn shouting that “only the devil” could create “animals capable of love and joy just so humans can make them suffer and die.” Martin wore a GoPro strapped to his chest, which some worshipers suspected was a bomb.

“I think we’ll put a tape where the camera blinks next time to make sure people aren’t confused,” said Collectively Free spokeswoman Raffaella Ciavatta. “New York is such a police city that I can see how people would react that way.” […]

Yeah, sure, a guy with a little box without blinking lights strapped to his chest will totally not frighten people.

Seriously, what kind of idiot pulls a stunt like this? Not only does it, but does it in a major landmark in NYC on a religious holiday?

What’s insane is the idea that the kind of amoral psychopathic personality that might cynically pretend to be a racist would shy away from enacting actual racist policies just to stay in power once power is attained.

Well, the GOP was 30 years or so of pretending to be evangelical Christians to get votes but doing very little to actually enact Christian policies, so there is plenty of precedent for this theory. Still ugly and scary, though.

The “defining characteristic” of all RFRAs is the attempt to legalize discrimination.

Disagree. They can be used both to enable and to prevent discrimination. One of the first cases involved the Amish. Pennsylvania wanted to force them to put big reflective triangles on their buggies for better visibility, the Amish wanted none of that. In the end, they sued using (I think) the Federal RFRA and used that leverage to reach a compromise, no orange triangles, just reflective tape that didn’t show much in the day but was bright at night. Both groups had reasonable positions, in the end it was the RFRA that allowed the Amish to stand up to the government and reach that compromise.

They can be used as a tool of oppression by the powerful or as a shield against discrimination for minorities. It just happens that the most politicians of the two parties see their ‘proper’ use differently.

This has jack shit to do with “character” and EVERYTHING to do with MONEY. It’s not just the movie business and other companies either leaving or just dropping deals in the works, it’s also going to fuck up the building of two new stadium complexes in Atlanta and the metro area (for the Braves and Falcons). Sure, they’ll get built, but no one will travel here to do anything involved with those venues. It also means no Super Bowl consideration and a lot of lost revenue for some very rich people.

These laws are such crap. Their precious 1st Amendment rights are not in jeopardy, if they were, they’d have legal recourse. Also, no one’s talking about the law that now allows employers to drop insurance coverage for birth control if it “goes against their beliefs”. Georgia. Yay.

196
lawhawk  Mar 28, 2016 • 9:15:41am

re: #192 BadgerB

I’m going to disagree with your disagreement. There was no need for a religious freedom restoration act in the first place, since the 1A remains the law of the land. But some people think that they should be entitled to legitimately discriminate based on their religious beliefs, and these laws allow those folks to try and get away with it. It is a setup for mischief.

The law doesn’t do anything that the 1A wouldn’t already do in the case of the Amish.

The government would have to have a very good reason to require visibility markers on vehicles using public roads - and it does, public safety. They could have required actual blinking lights or electrified signal markers as other vehicles are required to have.

The Amish could fight the markers and under the 1A would be able to reach an accommodation all the same. IMO, the RFRA doesn’t change that outcome.

So there’s a new poll out in California. Primary numbers aren’t entirely surprising: Clinton leads Sanders 45-37. Trump leads Cruz and Kaisch 37-30-12 (meaning 20% of Republican voters are either going to make a protest vote or don’t know who they’re voting for). For those wondering, the California Democratic Party allows Independents to vote in the primary while the California GOP does not.

More interesting is that in the general election match ups Clinton beats Trump 59-28. Right at the crazification factor. Also fun: only 47% of California Republicans would enthusiastically vote for Trump in the general - 27% would vote for him reluctantly (talk about the crazification factor!) and 27% would not vote for him.

The California GOP has lost a lot of clout over the last 20 years or so (ever since Prop 187), so it’s become as wingnutty as the rest of the country, but it is still interesting that almost a third of them won’t vote for Trump in the general.

re: #187 retired cynic

Maybe we’re misunderstanding each other. I was referring to Trump’s interview in the NYT. Trump made a big deal about South Korea and Japan having nukes so that we could stop having to defend them, and save money.

It was ‘ickily’ fascinating to hear him talk himself into it, after he first brought it up: the way his mind worked.

I know a lot of people around here aren’t very fond of Reagan, but even he was against nuclear proliferation. Amazing how far the GOP has gone.

It is very interesting that you claim Trump doesn’t speak for the GOP. They allowed him to run and they had him sign an agreement saying he would not run an anything but a Republican. Seems pretty GOP to me.

If they didn’t see him as a Republican they could have refused him. But they didn’t. Why? Because he spoke to the Republican base.

This I really don’t understand. In my opinion, as a Democrat, I’ve found DWS to be at best, a mediocre Party leader: maybe slightly better than Reince Priebus, but given that that’s an extraordinarily low bar to hurdle, it’s not saying much. The pending GOP implosion this year is, AFAICT a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the Democratic Party to re-take a considerable amount of political power back from the Republicans on a Congressional level (though I’m not so sanguine about the rosy predictions of “statehouse sweeps” - gerrymander toxins sink in deep). To maximize political gains what’s needed is a strong, well-financed, well-coordinated national campaign to push the Democratic “brand”, and support down-ballot candidates all over the country.
Instead, we have Debbie Wasserman-Schultz: who, if she is indeed working towards those goals, has managed to keep it a pretty close secret so far…

They’re already doing that. A lot of Cruz’s attacks on Trump are for not being right wing enough and his past socially moderate stances. We’re definitely going to get that excuse if Trump loses. 5th Armored was more than just tanks. They had a number of artillery batallions, whether the 47th, 71st, or 95th Armored Field Artillery Battalion. He could have been attached to one of those units.

Those three units were organized 1944-1945. There were a couple others from earlier in the war. If you know the time period in which he served, you can probably narrow it down.

From there, you could probably even contact the unit historians and they might have other information for you.

Probably not. At least not right away.

What I can see happening, though, in the event of a Clinton victory/Senate flip (the House is hopeless, I think: the gerrymander’s toxins are deep-acting), is what may well amount to a modern-day secessionist movement in Republican-controlled states. We’ve already seen a start in places like Kansas: State government firmly under the GOP jackboot, opposition marginalized/demonized, and easily prone to view the Federal Government as a malevolent “dictatorship” wrongheadedly blocking the “people’s will”: which of course, seems to only be manifested by laws enshrining economic favoritism, social discrimination, and enforced religiosity.

Appreciate all the help guys. I think I remember reading that there was a fire in the early 70’s that destroyed a lot of Korean War era records. All I had to go on was that photograph and my memories of what he told me which was fairly little. He never attended any reunions for his unit. What’s left of the Tea Party is now rallying behind the GOP’s SCOTUS blockade, because Constitutional principle, limited gov, or something.

And they’re threatening a primary against the Kansas Senator Jerry Moran for saying the prez nominee should get a hearing. Because Constitution. and freedom.

Yeah…I caught that bit about Sharon Angle, former TeaParty queen, going all constitutional conservative in her newer political endeavors.

She will still need to cover over the fact she is certified crazy.

It’s pretty much a given in politics that if you’re the front runner, you don’t want to give any more debates than necessary or previously agreed upon, while those trailing want every opportunity to debate since it opens the door to catch up, get free media, etc.

So, why is Hillary’s refusal to go along with additional debates ahead of the NY primary suddenly turning into some entirely new debate about how Hillary will do in the general or that she’s doing something different than every other front runner?

Interestingly enough, I have a copy of one of his older brother’s records that indicates that the older brother stationed at Camp Chafee too. So yeah this does make sense. Appreciate all the help guys. I think I remember reading that there was a fire in the early 70’s that destroyed a lot of Korean War era records. All I had to go on was that photograph and my memories of what he told me which was fairly little. He never attended any reunions for his unit. It was an important part of his life but I think once he was out of the military, he was eager to go on with civilian life.

You really think those Southern states would risk seceding again and cutting themselves off from all that government aid they love to gobble up?

Nope: that’s why I think, that unlike 1860, they are going to do it piecemeal this time - a “virtual” secession, iow: leveraging their representation in Congress to keep the Federal money spigots open, while gradually arrogating more and more power to themselves to do what they love best: enshrine discrimination into law to feed their own voting base’s (white RWNJs) prejudices, and do favors for their big-money donors. All in the name of “state’s rights” and “local government”, of course. It’s a lot easier in a one-party state: which isn’t going to change as long as the bulk of the GOP base remains absolutely convinced that the Democrats are the party of Satan with no political legitimacy at all.

I doubt it, a brokered convention would most likely result in Cruz as the nominee so someone else who hasn’t been running yet. The GOP are not that smart, but I think they are smart enough to know they have no chance of winning behind Kasich.

Are you forgetting no one in the party likes Cruz?

It may not be Kasich, but if it goes to a convention war it will be difficult for Cruz to get picked too.

I think the GOP knows that if they cater to the RWNJs with a Cruz they have zero chance to win an election.

They will take their chances with someone more middle-of-the-road party favorite. It might not work, but it will at least make them look less extreme and put them in a better position next time. It also could save them Congress.

I disagree, because the delegates aren’t going to be the Senators who despise Cruz, but state party Republicans, many of whom are staunch conservatives and admire Cruz. Also the Cruz organization is working on getting Cruz supporters selected as delegates, even the delegates who are pledged to vote for Trump on the first ballot. I expect the nominee will be either Trump or Cruz, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Cruz tries to make this into an open convention on the first ballot if Trump has a majority of the pledged delegates.

My thoughts were a brokered convention is already risky enough. If the GOP have any chance of selling the base on such a maneuver and NOT making it look like the party is pissing all over them, their best bet is to try to settle on Cruz with an establishment VP Pick. Cruz is the only other candiate with anything remotely close to widespread voter support. Throw out all the voter picks and essentially tell the base “fuck you, we’re doing this our way!” is the short route to a GOP civil war.

A detainee released from Gitmo has killed an American. When will our so-called “leaders” ever learn!

I dunno about this: a quick check of Google news turns up a bunch of articles that all go back to one article last week:

A senior Pentagon official said Wednesday that the release of detainees from the U.S. military’s prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has led to American deaths, though he did not provide any specific examples.

Paul Lewis, the Defense Department’s special envoy for Guantanamo closure, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee under questioning that “unfortunately, there have been Americans that have died because of Gitmo detainees.” He did not provide any details on whether those deaths occurred in terrorist attacks or on a military battlefield, or how many Americans were killed.

It’s hard to make out what the significance (and/or credibility) is: it’s both specific and vague at the same time.

Don’t forget south by dog carolina, where:

the Clinton campaign had only two campaign offices in South Carolina: one in Charleston and another in the capital, Columbia, with just 14 full-time staffers including state director Clay Middleton. The campaign also has nine “get out the vote” sites - smaller-scale sites devoted to turnout - across the state.
The Sanders campaign, meanwhile, had 240 staffers on the ground as of last week

msnbc.com

And where Hillary took every county. (But it doesn’t count because—south, dumb voters with no internet, nobody knew who Bernie was, infiltration of Hillary staff into Bernie operation, “those people” don’t understand what’s best for them, which, of course is BERNIE, etc.)
