GOP Clown Car Town Hall, March 29, 2016, Thread 1

Politics • Views: 54,711

I am filled with a sense of deep weariness and disgust as I contemplate tonight’s CNN GOP Town Hall meeting. My brain feels covered with a sticky layer of noxious mud and my eyes begin to droop. I yawn. They’re all such horrible people that it drains my energy to even think about them, as if I were the victim of a psychic vampire.

But still, I must summon my reserves and carry on. After all, there’s still hope. Hope that Donald Trump and Ted Cruz may launch themselves at each other and finally get into that apocalyptic fist fight we know America wants to see. And after all, isn’t this about what America wants?

So here’s our first thread for this dreadful mess.

I’d still like to see guns permitted at the Republican convention. After all, the GOP obeys the NRA in all things, and the NRA would like to see guns absolutely everywhere.

The funeral for that Indiana sheriff’s deputy killed on that drug warrant was today. A good young man died because of this goddamn war on drugs. We need to do better, by our cops and by the addicts.

A CNBC Columnist Asked Readers For Their Passwords. That Was a Mistake.

A columnist for CNBC’s The Big Crunch tried to make a misguided point about the FBI’s iPhone situation with an interactive tool that asked readers to input their password to see how secure they were. The post is now down, but if you did comply with the CNBC request, it might be a good idea to change your password. You should do this from time to time anyway.

The post asked you to type your password into a field, hit enter, and voila! CNBC’s expertly coded widget provided detailed analysis of that password, telling you whether it was strong, and if not, what was wrong with it.

I know what you’re thinking: Come on, this was only for “entertainment and educational purposes,” as the widget clearly stated in official-looking italic text. What could go wrong? Well…

Desktop just did a hard shutdown again for the third time in 24 hours - first two were about an hour apart, around this time yesterday. After the second one, it wouldn’t come back up until I power-cycled the power supply. The other two have seen the machine restart on its own.

I’m monitoring CPU temperature and no overheating. There’s nothing in the event logs at all until after the computer comes up, about how the previous shutdown was unexpected. My first instinct is power supply - the one in the machine is probably 5-6 years old - but is there something else I should be considering? Thanks.

I know it’s because we make money and are doing well, but holy crap, we’re not doing so well that that change isn’t a substantial impact to how we currently live.

I’d have to pay substantially more assuming Sanders won, but almost an equally lower amount under Trump or Cruz. I’d pay about the same under Hillary, whose tax policy is essentially playing around the margins.

Trump’s policy is a wholesale giveaway to the rich. Massive tax breaks to the rich, and the debt explodes. Cruz not only provides the tax breaks to the rich, but creates a new complex VAT process by which the tax burden is shifted to everyone else.

And Cruz also explodes the deficit.

I’d take either Democrat’s tax plans over the GOP nonsense.

I also prefer the (D) proposals to anything on offer from the GOP.

However, what I’d really like to see is a gradual decrease in US military spending, with about half the savings applied to debt reduction and the other half used to beef up social security, medicare and the ACA. 1-2% reduction each year for 10-20 years would be a good rebalancing, IMO.

Trump and Cruz’s reduce the tax bill by embarrassing numbers compared to what we currently pay.

I’d take either Democrat plan, but the reality is that the tax increase we’d see under Bernie’s plan is almost equivalent to what we spend on a yearly basis. That’s not trivial for most households to absorb, I think, even if healthcare costs suddenly were taken out of the picture and the employers decided to pass those savings on in the form of increased wages.

Of course, I also recognize the likelihood of any of Bernie’s plan passing Congress, especially with all the work he’s doing on the downticket races.

that’s what they mean by “we’re gonna take our jobs back”

Yeah, I looked it up. About 58,000 overdoses vs. 38,000 car deaths.

Death from opioid overdose is preventable through timely administration of the antidote naloxone. Several countries now provide take-home naloxone (THN) to opioid users for emergency use, but mostly as pilot schemes and without formal evaluation. A new study published by the scientific journal Addiction found that take-home naloxone programs reduce overdose mortality and have a low rate of adverse events. The study recommends take-home naloxone as a new standard of care for prevention of heroin overdose deaths.Science Daily

The US isn’t one of those countries. Making naloxone available to addicts would be considered enabling drug addiction by the right wing drug warriors. Because they’re pro-life you know.

Stoick: …my father told me to bang my head against a rock and I did it! I thought I was crazy, but I didn’t question him. And you know what happened?

Gobber: You got a headache.

Stoick: That rock split in two! It taught me what a Viking can do, Gobber, he can, he can crush mountains, level forests, tame seas! Even as a boy, I knew what I was, what I had to become… Hiccup is not that boy.

It’s the same argument that they make against needle exchanges. That people are going to become IV drug users simply because a needle exchange exists. Without going into details, lets just say that I’ve got some experience with rehab and addicts, and I can promise you that I’ve never met one that started shooting drugs because a needle exchange made it all ok.

Of course in the real world needle exchanges costs are much less than treating HIV / HEP infections. It also keeps people in touch with care professionals for when they are ready to quit.

re: #99 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I don’t think tax increases of that magnitude are politically viable. If Sanders were the nominee, that would be a legitimate issue in the general election (although most certainly not enough to get me to vote Republican).

The fact that the Republicans aren’t hollering about “Tax and Spend Communists” loud enough to be heard in the Andromeda galaxy in view of Sander’s plan is proof positive that they want to face him rather than Clinton in November.

I’d unseat / reseat all connectors / memory. if that doesn’t fix it go to step 2.

Get Motherboard Monitor (MBT). It can track and log voltages / temps / loads. Get it running and then start running a test program. I bet that when it reboots and then comes back up, the log is going to show the power supply slowly dropping voltage until it resets.

Been there, done that.

RBS

MBM’s really old; I used to use it a long time ago, but it hasn’t been updated in almost ten years.

re: #94 Blind Frog Belly White

God. I am boggled by how completely misunderstood Common Core is by those who oppose it. I’m not saying it’s a good idea - Mrs. FBW, for one, thinks it’s stupid - but whatever its flaws, it’s definitely not an attempt by Obama to ram Sharia down our collective throats.

I haven’t looked at Common Core in detail, but the idea of having national standards for education has merit. Having moved a lot (military brat) I discovered a wide disparity of education in different states. As a sophomore in NY state, I was taking chemistry classes in well equipped labs and learning material most kids don’t get until college. Finished high school in Alabama, where I coasted through the next two years while being considered a great student. Never had the heart to tell the teachers I’d already learned all the material as a freshman and sophomore. In essence, kids from states like Alabama were and probably still are two years behind college peers from other states.

Granted that standardized tests and similar metrics to ensure consistency are flawed and often biased. Their use can adversely impact student’s education as well. The NY schools I attended required passing a Regents exam to graduate (a “final” for HS). Can’t tell you how many times I heard students ask teachers “Is this going to be on the Regents?” and then doze off after being told no.

IMO the right hates Common Core because it sets standards for education. They don’t want their private (but government subsidized) for profit and/or church schools held up to any standard. There have already been lawsuits demanding that colleges grant credit for coursework that didn’t come close to meeting the college standards. I did study science, I learned all about creationism!!1!

As we see from the ongoing Texas Board of Education revision of history and science in textbooks, the right also doesn’t want their kids to be exposed to anything outside their rigid ideologies. Add the desire of the establishment to have a work force that can be paid third world wages to the greed of the private school profiteers and the refusal of fundamentalists to consider anything but their dogma as truth, and the sum is vehement opposition to Common Core and the Dept of Education.

And I haven’t watched a bit. Is it still going on?

re: #203 A Cranky One

We have moved a lot, too. When we talked to teachers in NH, which is hard to read on such issues, we were told that the notorious anti-federal stance here is mitigated by the pro-education (just leave it to us locals) orientation of most, but not all, communities. It turns out that our kids’ schools are basically Common Core without being officially CC. Why? Because CC is really strong suggestions rather than mandates anyway. Anyway, we’re pretty happy with our kids’ experience so far. Our best experience was in magnet schools in Lexington, KY (we were only there for two years; the first year was just ok in the neighborhood school). We haven’t had a worst experience. The small school in Virginia wasn’t great and there wasn’t much emphasis on science, but the teachers in their own ways tried to mitigate.

I don’t think they did. I got the car back today - they’d checked all the idle air control stuff. (It was doing this on start-up.) If it happens again with the car in my driveway, I’m close enough to the shop that they’re going to send someone over with the diagnostic computer to try and get a handle on it, because driving it over to the shop last time made it impossible to reproduce. In the meantime, I’m borrowing mr. klys’s car for any errands I need to do further away from the house this week.

re: #162 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Check to see if the fans are all running, especially the CPU and PSU fans; I had the fan go out in my 8-year-old Cooler Master 850W PSU not long ago and the only reason I found out is that, while playing the new Hitman for about 45 minutes-an hour right after it came out and I DL’ed it on Steam a couple of weeks ago (a nice little freebie that came with the new Radeon R9 390 that I bought a month or so ago), my computer just shut right down, no warning, right in the middle of the game.

I tried to power right back up, no dice, nothing; when I opened up the case, everything was just hot as hell inside, the PSU even more so. I unplugged the PSU, let everything cool down for about 10-15 minutes, plugged it back up, and it fired right up. Leaving the side of the case off, I made sure all of the fans were running and found the PSU fan wasn’t, so I ordered a new PSU fan from Newegg and held off on doing any heavy loads on the machine until I got the new fan and replaced it.

The contempt for Europe is fucking amazing.

Ignorance is contagious. Nobody flies over there anymore.

I remember when Europe was a wonderful getaway, now Broken Yurop is a GOP shibboleth. I don’t think they (the whole continent!) have recovered PR-wise from being a transit point for the 9/11 hijackers.

Oh, this is a homebuilt machine. It’s a 1kW Antec in there. >.>

Given what’s installed, sufficient power should not be an issue.

FWIW, an EGR valve that’s stuck open usually causes engine stalling at idle, especially when the engine has not reached operating temperature. Then (hypothetically) it begins to operate properly to confound subsequent diagnosis.

It’s usually the last thing auto mechanics consider as sometimes the EGR valve is located in an inaccessible location.

From December (the list is a whole lot longer now):—the article has links to the applicable stories:

Here’s a short list of all the women Kasich has insulted in recent memory
Young women - 18 year old reporters just want “Taylor Swift tickets”
Older women - Old folks will ‘get over’ his medicare cuts
Hispanic women - Give that “Latina Maid” a tip!
African American Women - “I don’t need your people”
Female teachers - They need to stop gossiping in teachers’ lounges
Rich Republican women - “I don’t know about you, lady…”
His own wife - She’s “hot” and “makes all the minor decisions”
Sexually assaulted women: “Just let it go”
Mitt romney’s wife - She’s “at home doing the laundry”
The girlfriend of a guy at the BMV - “Is this your mother?”
His female staffers - Pay them less. A LOT less.
The nearly-zero women on his cabinet: ” I really wish I could get some guys around me” (also this!)
Any women who feel insulted by his comments - “Let’s also get a sense of humor back in America, OK?”

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly said that Clinton used two different email addresses, sometimes interchangeably, as secretary of state. She used only hdr22@clintonemail.com as secretary of state. Also, an earlier version of this article reported that 147 FBI agents had been detailed to the investigation, according to a lawmaker briefed by FBI Director James B. Comey. Two U.S. law enforcement officials have since told The Washington Post that figure is too high. The FBI will not provide an exact figure, but the officials say the number of FBI personnel involved is fewer than 50.

I’ve been keeping an eye on r/politics over at reddit to see what the kids are thinking, and so many see this as a real scandal, even people who understand that prior scandals have been fake. The 147 number was repeated over and over as proof that this is very serious, and that Clinton is wasting tax dollars on this investigation that she did not initiate.

Doesn’t take much to have to pay more tax.

Using the calculator, a married couple with no children making $10,000 a year would see an increase of $1200 in their tax bill (on average, in the brackets that they’ve used to produce these numbers) under Sanders’ plan.

It’s interesting to play around with.
