The Next Anti-Hillary Attack Is Queued Up: She Used a “Noise Machine” Against the Media

Oh please
Politics • Views: 62,895

The next fake story about Hillary Clinton is now queued up.

Tonight I’m seeing a lot of tweets linking to a Washington Examiner post with the absurd headline: Clinton team blasts reporters with noise machine during Hillary fundraising speech.

OK, so let’s go to the tweets this hysterical story is based upon. Note that these tweets do not say “Clinton staffers” did this, although the Washington Examiner hack piece states this as a fact.

The video clip with the “noise machine turned on:”

The video clip with the “noise machine turned off:”

Can you hear the difference?

And do you think the Clinton campaign would actually use a “noise machine” to try to prevent reporters from hearing what she was saying? In public? Reporters, who…. you know… report things?

(Public address systems sometimes have static, by the way, especially when operated by non-experts switching over to a different set of microphones after a band plays.)

Wouldn’t a “noise machine” also prevent the audience from hearing her, or was this a super-special noise machine that only targeted reporters?

Please tell me this isn’t going to be a real story in the rest of the media. Somebody, please.

There’s a very slight difference in the two video clips; the first one has a slightly higher pitched background noise that might be some kind of static in the PA system. But the difference is tiny.

How the fuck can anyone listen to these two clips and think this is a real story?

On a Yahoo News post of the Rogue One trailer I replied to some bigoted piece of pocket lint who was complaining that Disney was “ruining everything” by pushing female and African American leads. I pointed out that white males have probably been the lead in at least 90% of films since the dawn of cinema, that women make up over 50% of the U.S. population and African-Americans 12% whike the white male population is declining, that studios market to international audiences as well and would be pretty stupid not to diversify their casts and leads. Of course I was wasting my time.

33
wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  Apr 7, 2016 • 9:01:10pm

Looking over the cast list at imdb, I note that SW: Rogue One has at least two Chinese actors, Donnie Yen and Wen Jiang. Both are well known and well liked on the mainland, so Disney/Lucasfilms is obviously hoping to pull in a huge Chinese audience.

The Chinese Star Wars VII box office has been very good, but not overwhelming. Most Chinese don’t know the earliest films well at all, so Disney needs to get them hooked the way the rest of the world is.

When you’re a one-man operation, your editor-in-chief is also your proofreader. In Rage Furby’s case, he cannot write, cannot edit and cannot proofread, so there’s the problem right there.

Wow. Did he just get out of the shower before he made that video, or his hair so greasy it just looks that way? This boy is a mess.

The vid is revealing in other ways. Check the equipment he’s got. Professional quality mic plus a camera that’s clearly better than a webcam. There’s still an echo-ey effect from the bare-walled room — needs some carpet or cork tiles to deaden that — but either he’s been spending some $$ on fancy equipment or he’s using his pal Peter Duke’s studio.

I think he decided writing is too much work, and now babbling into a camera is much easier. He needs to work on camera looks, though.

If you look at the trailer’s demographics, the first few minutes have 90% white faces, until we see Forrest Whitaker and Donnie Yen. I am unmoved by racist/sexist complaints that white men are getting short shrift in the movies.

Way back in the dim times of network TV, I, Spy featured two guys, one white, one black. I imagine the racists had a field day with that one, but that was before the Internet made it possible for the rest of us to see what they were saying.

And yeah, Cosby was the co-star.

Personally speaking, I approve of Felicity Jones as a Star Wars lead. I’m pretty sure she can pull it off.

That’s two British SW female leads now. Maybe there will be an anti-British crowd complaining online about that, too.

I’ll need to watch it again. Felicity Jones had me distracted. Overall, the film looks like it will be good.

Then I watched Rage Furby’s commentary on how JJ Abrams is part of a vast social justice conspiracy to marginalize white men by making them villains, and women and minorities heroes, and felt like I had just lost 30 points off my IQ score.

He babbles. He makes no sense. Did you know, for example, that there are no blacks or Hispanics working for NASA, so scenes in The Martian showing blacks and Hispanics and not Asians and whites in those roles are just awful? And he says it’s silly to have a woman as a rebel, because women don’t rebel. That’s what alpha males do.

Morning! Brrrr. Hey, at least the sun is out…for now. Maybe I can get some of my photo job accomplished today before it gets crappy again.

I watched the first 20 minutes of Morning Joke again today. Nice thing was there was no Joke for the first halfhour. Joke must have been doing his hair.

Anyway, the must have drunk some coffee. Mika and today’s panel woke the hell up and discovered there just may be something about this qualified for office thing. Yep, suddenly they figured out the media has been enamored with the glory of the anti-establishment types and forgot to actually check into things like policy, accomplishment and ability to get things done.

Who knows, Bernie may regret he is going down that road because after the newspaper NY Daily News got smart enough to ask questions and hold a candidate’s feet to the fire, it seems the other media might actually start to ask questions.

What a concept. Let’s see where this goes.

By the way, I can’t watch but The NBC Today show is going to be having a Town Hall with Bernie in the next half hour.

And the Matt Lauer interview with Hillary was handled pretty well by Hillary in my opinion.

Later…

Which conveniently ignores that Palpatine (old white guy) was the main bad guy in the original trilogy. His number two, Vader (old white guy) was a villain for 95% of the original trilogy.

And the Death Star was destroyed by Lando Calrissian (black guy) and his alien co-pilot (yes, and also Wedge Antilles [white guy]).

Janet Yellen doesn’t see a bubble in the market.

Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen on Thursday touted the strength of the United States economy, rebuffing political rhetoric suggesting a bubble is ready to

burst.

“I certainly wouldn’t describe this as a bubble economy,” Yellen said, noting a “healing” labor market and a 5 percent headline unemployment number.

Yellen appeared on a panel with former Fed Chairs Ben Bernanke, Paul Volcker and Alan Greenspan at the International House in New York. The U.S. central bank heads discussed the U.S. economy and monetary policy around the globe.

Yellen’s comments come soon after Republican presidential contender Donald Trump’s contention that an economic bubble could burst. Yellen noted that she did not see “imbalances” like “clearly overvalued” asset prices.

and on breaking up the big banks:

Yellen also addressed a recent crusade by Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, who has floated breaking up large banks to increase financial system stability. She noted that she shared Kashkari’s concern about ending firms’ “too big to fail” status.

But she said policies like capital and liquidity requirements and stress tests have “greatly enhanced the safety and soundness of the banking system.”

“I feel more positive on the progress that we’ve made,” Yellen said.

from the article:

“I am grateful to the Vatican for inviting me to talk about an issue that is very dear to my heart, which is how we create a moral economy that works for all of the people rather than just the top one percent,” Sanders said in an interview. “I will also in my remarks be addressing the planetary crisis of climate change and the moral imperative to make sure we leave this planet in a way that is healthy and habitable for future generations.”

Sanders, who would be the nation’s first Jewish president, often references Francis on the campaign trail, praising his leadership on economic and environmental issues. Sanders said he believes he will be the only American public official speaking at the gathering.

Chuck Johnson: Civilization doomed because Star Wars: #RogueOne not white enough

So, Chuck Johnson has moved from writing incoherently on his blog to speaking incoherently in YouTube videos that he introduces in print by referring to himself in the third person. This deft maneuver has made our job harder, as we now must listen to him babble before trying to make sense of it for you. Yeah, you’re welcome.

Skip the video. We mean this. We value your sanity and well being. Read our summary. Then have a good stiff drink, and watch something soothing, like My Little Pony.

Our headline pretty much says it all. His high-IQ argument is essentially that civilization depends on white alpha males to make things happen, because “beta” males and women can’t do it. These white alpha males need role models to get their inspiration — white, male role models. The earlier Star Wars movies and the Star Trek TV show inspired white men to do stuff, like build the Internet so tubby, pasty-white boys can make nonsensical videos in their basement to tell us why Rogue One sucks.

OK, he didn’t say that last part.

Pre-speakers started to come on. One woman was an evangelical pastor in bleached-blond hair and a skin-tight orange dress with orange high-heels to match, looking like a Fox News hostess wearing an Oompa Loompa that she’d shot on safari. She made some sort of case that Donald Trump was privately holy and a true man of God. Whatever.

The deepest irony of the whole thing was being surrounded by people who mock underprivileged minorities for seeking autonomous “safe spaces” while crying for the government to build a literal wall around them all and kill every single person they’re afraid of.

Make sure you take into account how much of this occurs every election. The unspoken understanding shaping debates about photo identification is that such laws are passed to disenfranchise those voters who are more likely to vote for Democrats. Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) articulated that position explicitly on Tuesday, arguing that the Republican presidential nominee would have a better chance of defeating whomever the Democratic nominee is in Wisconsin because the photo ID law will result in fewer Democrats voting.

(video)

“[Grothman] seems to have gone off script,” said Kristen Clarke, president of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, which runs the Election Protection program. “But he confirmed what we’ve always known, which is that voter ID is a tool used to promote voter suppression.”

I have seen that myself. People pushing anything as long as it will hurt the candidate they don’t like.

Democrats never took right wing propaganda websites like Breitbart, Moonie Times, etc seriously even if they were trying to attack a candidate. Until this election and mostly the attacks are from Sanders supporters who either never voted before or were not Democrats before this election cycle.

With the element of surprise, which is what any person would have that is not just walking around waving a gun around, they are probably going to get one victim before they get shot. I think corporations have too much influence and should pay way more in taxes. Corporations employ as little people as possible, outsourcing and opening up foreign subsidiaries instead. I think both Sanders and Clinton have similar ideas on how to change that. Evil is a strong word but people are rightly angry at the state of the economy if you aren’t upper middle class and above.

That engines of innovation is debatable. It was government funded research and development that created America today. If we left everything up to corporations then the economy would just turn into engines for the elite to grow their wealth, which is what is happening today after the de-regulation started in the 1970’s. Also what happened in the Gilded Age, and the “roaring 20’s.”

The thing is, I don’t think he really understands what “liberal” means in this country. Liberal has never meant anti-business. FDR, the closest we’ve gotten to a socialist leader, still supported business. He just saw that there really needed to be a greater balance between business and people.

And I consider myself a pretty solid liberal, but I wonder if it might not actually be better to not tax companies at all, but significantly raise upper bracket income taxes and raise the capital gains tax to regular income tax levels. This would not only force, but encourage companies to put that money back into the company. The one downside is that a company could choose to sit on the money, but that could actually be fixed by introducing a little bit of inflation into the economy with, say, a minimum wage that increases every year.

Edit: Another incentive for not taxing businesses is that it reduces the legal requirement to treat them as citizens.

I disagree with not taxing corporations. They will sit on that money. There needs to be incentives to invest here, in human capital and in other ways. Tax policy should be such that it encourages that kind of investment. Our tax rates for corporations are almost the lowest in the world, no matter what right wingers say.

What we’re doing now, trying to tax American companies subsidies that are in other countries at American rates (in essence double taxation) is stupid and ineffective…and mostly illegal. This is a stupid path to take. There is no incentive for American investment. Taxes for taxing sake is a pointless exercise. We want companies to want to be here and invest here.

I don’t think anyone here is saying taxing corporations is necessarily a bad thing. It’s just not intrinsically a good thing. It’s a tool we can and probably should use to some degree, but not an end in itself.

We should seek to maximize some sort of quality/equality of life metric for the population and see what tax rates will help us achieve that, not pick our favorite tax rate and see where it gets us.

And if a company doesn’t want to pay a fair tax rate then another company will gladly take their place.

The only way the wealthy could get that money is through a salary, which would be taxed. That’s also why I said capital gains taxes should be raised up to the level of any salary.

What I don’t get are wingnuts who think shitty wages are good for business. Higher paid workers are more productive workers. It also would decrease turnaround and create people who want to work for a company.

re: #169 Shimshon

Capitalism is evil. That is why there needs to be strong regulation and oversight. That is what “capitalism is evil” means to me. That left unchecked, we get financial crises and corruption and militaries acting on behalf of corporations like United Fruit and Halliburton.

Unbridled capitalism is evil. Greed (is not good), is evil when not balanced with societal impact. Right wingers feel unbridled greed is good because it shows power. And authoritarianism. And they think they will, too, someday, be the CEO of some giant corporation making millions.

The Not Really Joe But Sam the Not Really Plumber syndrome.

re: #183 Testy Toad T

I don’t think anyone here is saying taxing corporations is necessarily a bad thing. It’s just not intrinsically a good thing. It’s a tool we can and probably should use to some degree, but not an end in itself.

We should seek to maximize some sort of quality/equality of life metric for the population and see what tax rates will help us achieve that, not pick our favorite tax rate and see where it gets us.

Agree. My proposal was just a thought experiment on the idea that just taxing everything is the way to solve the equality problem. Could we tax different things that might have a better effect? I still ultimately believe in a progressive tax structure, so that’s never going to change.

re: #177 Timothy Watson

There’s currently an accumulated earnings tax, but I don’t know how many businesses are actually affected by it each year.

I am not sure if we’re talking about the same thing but it may very well be. The companies affected would be registered as corporate head offices in the US with corporate entities elsewhere (think Google who is an American corp but has offices around the world). They pay taxes to the countries they are in. I don’t know tax law well enough but from what I read, there is either existing law or recommended law that they want those companies to pay taxes to the US on earnings made in other countries - where they are already paying taxes. Whether some of that is deductible on US tax forms I don’t know.

As someone said, tax law is insanely complex. But I do not hear of anything in tax law that encourages US investment which is what we should be striving for.

Tax policy should be such that it encourages that kind of investment. Our tax rates for corporations are almost the lowest in the world, no matter what right wingers say.

And we still don’t compete that well.

Corporations and their execs are more interested in being rich than being leaders in innovation and in their industry.

FWIW, the Sanders campaign is reporting the story as true - I’m on the mailing list and got the following e-mail this morning:

From: berniesanders.com

Subject: Wild story from Clinton fundraiser last night

[my name] -

Last night Hillary Clinton hosted an outdoor fundraiser in Colorado (a state that already caucused) where “Event Chairs” could bundle $27,000 and “Champions” contributed $2,700.

But a crazy thing happened when she got ready to speak. Her campaign actually “turned on a static noise machine” pointed at the press so they couldn’t hear what she was saying to the financial elite in attendance.

Look, this campaign is funded by emails like this one. So this is technically a Bernie Sanders fundraiser. No noise machine here - we’ll say it directly to you and any members of the press who are on this email list: If Bernie Sanders is elected, he is going to take on a rigged economy held in place by a corrupt campaign finance system. He’s going to fight for universal health care, keep fossil fuels in the ground, ensure no bank is too big to fail and no banker too powerful to jail.

There is no link to the source of the story or reference to where it came from.

“Evil” is such a deeply unhelpful term. In most cases, it terminates all useful discussion and back-and-forth dealmaking and compromise.

It’s a label to stick on a thing you don’t like.

I despise the term, myself, but am using it as it is used by those who deride corporations without thinking of the impact of, what, I am not sure…doing away with them? The whole concept makes no sense to me.

And I haven’t figured out how to make this work. Do we have a “best innovation award” sponsored by the government? Do we execute a underperforming CEO?

Actually, after writing that, the best way to make this work is to figure out how to cap CEO salaries. And that’s where an upper income tax hike, and taxing stock options as income, would be a good start.

Edit: I think this would reduce the incentive of being a CEO just being a place to make a lot of money for yourself before you retire.

South Carolina state Sen. The Sanders campaign made the announcement on Friday as the senator made the rounds of the morning television news programs. Mr. Sanders will take a break from campaigning in New York, just days ahead of the April 19 primary there, to attend the conference hosted by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Two things.

1)

Rallying a crush of young people and independent voters to his campaign, Bernie Sanders has cut deeply into Hillary Clinton’s lead in California two months before the state’s Democratic presidential primary, according to a new Field Poll.

Sanders, who trailed Clinton by double digits in January, now lags just 6 percentage points behind.

sacbee.com

2)

Even if she eventually vanquishes Bernie Sanders in the primaries, Hillary Clinton might have serious trouble winning over his voters.

One out of four Sanders supporters- 25 percent - say they would not back Clinton in a general election if she became the Democratic nominee for president, while just 69 percent say they would support her, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.

sacbee.com

So basically the Dems have to hope that GOP voters act the same way when their favorite candidate isn’t chosen.

The delegate math says she’s going to be the nominee, and I believe someone else has pointed out that at this point in the primaries in 2008, even fewer Clinton voters said they would vote for Obama if he was the nominee. We can see how that turned out.

Cop Asks Jogger To Run On Sidewalk, Arrests Her When She Doesn’t

Vera Pecaj, a 40-year-old teacher from Brighton, was jogging in Green Oak Township when Officer Michael Jain pulled up next to her in his vehicle and asked her to move from the road onto the sidewalk. According to Jain’s report, Pecaj ignored him. More, from MLive:

Jain crossed Rickett Road and then turned left onto Mission Road to wait for Pecaj, his report states. When he held up his hand to signal her to stop, he said, she repeatedly refused.

When she finally did —after Jain informed her she needed to stop or she’d go to jail — Pecaj refused to give her name and yelled she had done nothing wrong. Pecaj turned away to keep running, and Jain grabbed her arm.

“Don’t f****** touch me,” Pecaj yelled, according to Jain’s report.

My recurring nightmare is that the “I live in a very red/blue state, so I can write in Bernie or vote for Jill Stein and maintain my moral integrity (or some such pompous bilge)” could really deflate the Dem margin—affecting the oh so important mandate talk or worse, result in an Electoral College win and a popular vote loss.

Oh, I’m thinking that if Trump or Cruz is the candidate, either one of them will continue to spread the joy that is the imploding Republican party, which may lead to some of these diehard “Bernie or Else” types to hop on the Clinton bandwagon.

I have had to restrain myself over the past several days from posting on Facebook about how Bernie has it all wrong about banks. It’s like he simply doesn’t understand that banks are not just bankers. Banks also include many, many people who may never speak to a customer but whose jobs are important in making sure the customer understands where their money is at and what it is doing. Banks, even small community banks, couldn’t exist without the technology behind them. Bernie doesn’t get this. Maybe he’d get it if he couldn’t pay for a round of drinks because the ATM system is down. (That’s my go-to example for explaining what enterprise availability is and what I do for a living.)

It.takes.more.than.bankers. Bernie’s anti-banker rhetoric forgets about those of us who work for banks but are not bankers.

I have to admit I wince the same way when I hear lefties say capitalism is evil the way I do when I hear righties say socialism is evil. Both systems I think offer something valid up. I agree with what Belafon is saying Re: FDR that there needs to be a balance between business and people.

Both capitalism and government are simply tools. They have no ethical qualities and they can only do what their operators tell them to do.

The human proclivity to assign ethical qualities to tools is probably one of the biggest weak points of our collective psyche. It keeps us from thinking carefully about what we are doing and why.

The biggest problem with that is that large parts of the economy don’t pass through individual hands. Those parts are performed mostly by corporate interests of which the business world is just one although possibly the largest.

But, in my opinion, this does not remove corporate interests from paying taxes. They are protected by our laws, law enforcement and armed forces. Our courts decide the niceties of contracts. Our infrastructure allows them to ship goods quickly and efficiently where those goods need to go.

There’s no reason they shouldn’t have to pay for that.

The Trump ‘cult’ is causing GOP mega-donors to abandon the presidential http://www.rawstory.com/2016/04/the-trump-cult-is-causing-gop-mega-donors-to-abandon-the-presidential-race/

Key conservative groups backed by the billionaire Koch brothers and their network of rich allies are plowing millions into Senate races after becoming frustrated by the overheated rhetoric and policies of leading Republican presidential candidates - especially frontrunner Donald Trump - and opting to stay out of the primaries.

Three leading groups - Americans for Prosperity, Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, and Concerned Veterans for America - supported by the Koch donor network spent almost $4m on ads in just the last month to boost Republican Senate candidates facing tough races in Nevada, Ohio and Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, for instance, Americans for Prosperity, the Koch network’s political flagship group, has begun a $1m effort to back the Republican senator Ron Johnson in his battle against Democratic former senator Russ Feingold, who is ahead in the polls.

Please proceed.

This iTunes Trick Will Automagically Free Up iPhone Storage

From reddit: Not sure if this is well-known, might be but definitely some people don’t know it.

I have an iPhone with 16 Gb so I’m always dealing with low storage. A trick I do to get back some storage is to try to “rent” a movie with a big file size (something like LOTR: two towers).

Just go to iTunes and search for the movie (with a bigger file size than what you have left on storage), click rent and soon you’ll get the message saying you don’t have enough storage and offers you to go to settings. Click that and magically you will get some storage back (probably it erases some useless data from different apps to try to download the movie).

Repeat the process 4-5 times and before you know it you recovered 1 to almost 2 Gb.
try it!.

This actually works. I went from 1.1 GB to 2.6 GB. With 1.1 GB I tried renting The Martian, which is over 5 GB. I repeated it over and over and eventually cleared up 1.5 GB.

No, it isn’t. It would be better wasted on a presidential candidate. At the same time, more people will be reluctant to go vote if they can’t vote for president. That’s kind of the lesson of the midterms. This will hurt down ticket races for them. They may be able to make up some of it, but I doubt they’ll make up all of it.

Laura Bush hints she’d rather see Hillary as president

Um effed up headline. Anybody but Trump is not a pitch for Hilary Clinton.

Headline not really so effed up, as the article continues…

I want our next president - whoever he or she might be - to be somebody who is interested in women in Afghanistan and who will continue US policies… that we continue to do what we’re committed to do as a country,” she said, as she appeared on stage alongside her twin daughters Jenna and Barbara.

Many in the packed auditorium took her words as a coded criticism of Mr Trump, whose foreign policy plans have been condemned as isolationist and weak on detail.
His closest rival Ted Cruz has also made clear that the US has no role in Afghanistan other than fighting terrorism.

In contrast, Mrs Clinton was among those who offered a cover endorsement for Mrs Bush’s Afghan book. “For over a decade, Laura Bush has been an ally and advocate for the women of Afghanistan and, in particular, has worked to ensure that the voices of Afghan women are heard,” she wrote.

The two women share a special bond as former first ladies and are of a similar age: both know the struggles of working their way up in a male-dominated world.

Thinking They’re ‘Unqualified’ Is A Big Reason More Women Don’t Run For Office

[snipped sections of article]

In his Philadelphia remarks, Sanders was attempting to make the basic argument of this election — that “outsiders” are more qualified than “insiders” to run the country at this particular moment. But calling Clinton, a former U.S. senator and secretary of state, “unqualified” is raising ire as a gendered attack, although that didn’t appear to be Sanders’ intention.

While 2016 campaign discussions of sexism have largely been preoccupied with Donald Trump’s blunt force assaults on modern notions of manners, let alone gender equity, Sanders’ remarks and their interpretation play into discussions of the subtle, pernicious forms of sexism that women in positions of power must deal with.

Looking at non-incumbent congressional races from 1984 to 2010, and which candidates had held elected office at a lower level — their metric for qualification — the researchers found that “women candidates in both parties are indeed more qualified than men.”

That’s why Sanders’ statement about Clinton’s qualifications cuts so deep — it seemed to send a volley at the fortress of qualification female candidates build up as proof of their worthiness to the public at large.
