Video: Charlie Rose Interviews Bernie Sanders About His “Hillary Is Unqualified” Comments

She did it first

Sen. Bernie Sanders was on CNN’s Charlie Rose show last night, and Rose pressed him pretty hard about his statement that Hillary Clinton was “unqualified” to be president.

I don’t think Sanders came off very well here; he just repeats over and over that she started it, I was just responding to her, etc. This is the sort of excuse you see in a playground argument between children, and I really don’t like seeing it in a presidential candidate. It reminds me of the way Republicans argue, with personal attacks and refusal to accept any responsibility.

Sanders does make one statement here that I was glad to hear, though; he says if Clinton is the nominee, he will support her. I may be mistaken but I think this is the first time he’s come out and said this.

I believe it is, and that’s really the only thing about this interview that I give a lick of a damn about.

I was never under the impression that Sanders was anything other than just another politician, so him acting like an aggrieved egotistical third grader didn’t really do anything other than lift the mask I knew was there.

Actions speak louder than words re: him supporting her

Will his support be more than “I support her.” or will he just give empty platitudes and slink back to Vermont never to be heard of again as I suspect?

He used to say often that stopping the Repubs was more important than who the Democratic candidate is, which I took to mean the same thing.

I posted this today on Twitter, and got immediately barraged by Bernie fans telling me he didn’t really say this, or he said it but he didn’t mean that exactly, and I was “stupid” for thinking so. Another one tweeted a “Butthurt Form” at me.

The full context:

“As president of the United States, I would do everything I can do to overturn those outrageous decisions by Mississippi and North Carolina.”

So yeah, you can split hairs and say he was referring to applying pressure to get the laws overturned, but this is part of a pattern of promising things he’ll never be able to deliver.

President can’t do the heavy lifting on this. If the cases were overturned, he’d be freeloading.

Compare and contrast with Obama and same sex marriage, or gays in the military. I flatly don’t think Sanders has the patience for that kind of work.

It’s really even less than that: he’s promising that the bad things wouldn’t be bad anymore, rather than (say) presenting a cogent and thoughtful framework for a bill that would never get through Congress.

In this he is remarkably indistinguishable from Ron Paul or, if we’re being honest, Donald Trump.

It could be true, but it seems a little odd that there are police hanging around checking ID on everyone using a random gas station restroom. It doesn’t sound like she was making a regular stop where she was well know as trans or anything. The odds of catching someone would be astronomically low.

Whether because he really believes it or because it gives him a convenient way of criticizing the President, Sanders regularly espouses the “Green Lantern Theory” of leadership. That if a President wants something bad enough and throws enough will behind it, he can make it happen and goodness will flow from it. You can hear him say it at least once a week, that the President didn’t “do enough” to get this or that progressive wish list item made law, the unspoken criticism being that the President obviously didn’t want it enough and thus isn’t “really” a progressive president. So I’m of the opinion that Sanders either personally believes or leading his supporters to believe that he can get everything he’s promising done because he’ll want it more than Obama or Hillary do.

I take this as reassuring.

It powerfully supports the idea that the Berniebros are the sorts of people who never turn out to vote in the first place, so all of those “oooh X% of Sanders supporters would never support Clinton” FUD doesn’t really change the fundamental calculus of the election.

The most fervent/frothy supporters have never been in the political mainstream. Big whoop, they can go back to eating paste after June.

[I hate that I have to continue to attach a caveat that I think there are a lot of thoughtful, rational, reasonable Democrats and Democrat-leaning indies who support Sanders for intelligent reasons, and I have no quibble with them.]

I wouldn’t be surprised if the police, or someone nearby, said she “looked like a man in drag.” One of the reasons we need anti-discrimination laws is that it can be easy to spot “a man in drag” and harass her.

Edit: And when I say this, I’m not talking about them caring whether or not the person is a trans woman or ciswoman. They have been given implicit approval to harass women.

Maybe I’m just unobservant or naive, but how would you tell if someone is trans? Wouldn’t she be dressed like a woman, with a woman’s hairstyle or whatever?
If this was a regular stop, well, the police could plan ahead, but she said she was on her way to a new job and stopped at this gas station where there were a bunch of people just hanging around. Not that this was different from any other time, which would indicate they might know her. How would the police know to stake the place out on that day?

That does not mean I believe everything that would fit in with this belief.

Someone could have pointed her out to the police, but she already set this up as being an unusual, scary situation because there were a bunch of people loitering-the implication as I read it is they were kind of waiting for her, or some other trans person to come in, which strikes me as a statistically unlikely proposition.

As others pointed out, it is fairly common to see locals hanging out in the store/gas station in rural towns. Sometimes, these stores have a built in cafe or some such to catch the trucker business on 421. A trans woman stands out real fucking quick if she isn’t local and known, or hasn’t had facial feminization surgery etc to go stealth.

As a rule, I do not go obviously fem when I leave Greensboro. I may wear women’s jeans and a tee shirt, but I do not push my luck with a dress or skirt or some such. I don’t feel like getting shot. As it is, I am considering getting my ccw here in NC simply because the temperature has been turned up real fucking high.

One of the main purposes of this evil law in NC is for people to get randomly harassed by knuckle-dragging oxygen thieves, as may have happened in this case.

For RWNJs, this harassment ideally extends all the way to murder often enough to “send a message”. The authors and supporters of the law will claim they didn’t want anyone to get killed, but that will be a lie.

Yes, the intent is to encourage harassment, and violence has been lurking under the surface ever since the prop 1 debacle when NC banned all recognition of gay marriage or any facsimile thereof. Lots of suggestions of shotguns and murder directed at the GLBT community in local statements and media, including some on youtube.

Yes, I am looking a getting a handgun and a ccw. I cannot effectively flee from somebody who wants to hurt me, and I may well have to use force to defend myself. I don’t like it, but I also don’t like being beat for somebody else’s entertainment.

You know it hits me that everyone is saying Bernie is bringing both new and young voters to politics.

I guess with that comes a lot of what we are seeing. Absolute clueless thinking.

Yeah, new voters is a good thing. Bernie might want to also educate a few because some of them sure as hell need it.

And while reading, the lyrics to a John Lennon song kept playing in my head. So, I looked them up. Maybe it is just me…but damn they work for today…for the Bernie bots.

Revolution - (Great video…don’t remember seeing this before…)

The Beatles - Revolution

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it’s evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don’t you know that you can count me out
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
All right, all right

You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We’d all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We’re doing what we can
But when you want money
For people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
All right, all right
Ah

Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah…

You say you’ll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don’t you know it’s gonna be all right
All right, all right
All right, all right, all right
All right, all right, all right

And while reading, the lyrics to a John Lennon song kept playing in my head. So, I looked them up. Maybe it is just me…but damn they work for today…for the Bernie bots.

Revolution - (Great video…don’t remember seeing this before…)

[Embedded content]

I’m seeing clueless thinking coming not only from new/young voters, but also from people who should know better. Case in point is my older brother, who waved away my concerns about Sanders’ apparent lack of concern over or even interest in downticket races, with the breezy assertion that if Bernie were to be elected it would sweep the Dems into control of the Senate and House, and I was asking him to dirty his hands by asking rich people for money for those races.

re: #54 Aunty Entity Dragon

Accounting for wind and sea movement is a nightmare even in good conditions as any naval aviator can tell you. I think this is a gee-whiz moment, but it gets real expensive to throw away your reusable boosters on this kind of thing.

It’s not their long-term plan, as far as I can tell. They have done a landing on solid ground, but the ocean landings allow multiple recovery options, whereas if something goes wrong and it’s coming down on land, well, you’ve thrown away that reusable booster all the same.

From an article discussing the third failure (in January - and really, only three failures is not what I would call a ‘lot’ given what they were trying to do):

Despite today’s failure, SpaceX will continue to push for sea landings, as it gives the company multiple options for recovering its rockets post-launch. Landing the Falcon 9 on land is an easier task, but only certain missions are suitable candidates for landing on solid ground. Redirecting a returning rocket to land on a launch pad requires extra fuel capacity that some missions just can’t spare. SpaceX wants to recover most, if not all, of its rockets in the future, no matter the type of mission. And sometimes, landing at sea is the only option.

President can’t do the heavy lifting on this. If the cases were overturned, he’d be freeloading.

Compare and contrast with Obama and same sex marriage, or gays in the military. I flatly don’t think Sanders has the patience for that kind of work.

To be fair there is one thing the President can hypothetically do about this, force all Federal agencies to score applicants for contracts based on their ability to comply with Title VII of the ‘64 civil rights act, specifically with regards to transgender equality. If a federal contractor’s State has laws on the books that conflict with that right the contractor has two options, either install gender neutral bathrooms in ALL their facilities, or move out of that State.

A bit of googling turned up the (surprising to me) fact that the EEOC interprets Title VII as forbidding employment discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.eeoc.gov

This interpretation will disappear about 3 seconds after any GOPer gets into office as president, making this issue reason # 1,000,000,001 to vote against the Republicans.

CuriousLurker  Apr 8, 2016 • 2:51:37pm

The whiny, intellectually dishonest hairsplitting of the above “Fact Checker” article annoyed the hell out of me. Also, note that they blamed everything on Sanders:

Headline writing is an imperfect art. The editor often has to summarize the meaning of a complex and nuanced article in just a few words. Many Washington-based reporters have experienced the frustration of having an accurate article denied by an agency spokesman because of a headline that went a little far off the mark.

In this case, however, the Post headline did not quote Clinton as saying Sanders was unqualified, and neither did the article. Instead, it drew attention to an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in which Clinton sidestepped questions about whether Sanders was qualified. […]

Those kinds of answers certainly give license to reporters to offer an interpretation that Clinton is raising questions about her rival’s qualifications. Clinton, after all, is a former secretary of state and is adept at signaling messages without actually saying the words out loud. But it’s not the same as “quote unquote” saying Sanders is unqualified. […]

Granted, Sanders should’ve checked before attacking her, but as I pointed out in one of RWC’s pages earlier this week, I’ve lost all trust in the U.S. media.

I’ve gotta admit these two tweets made me LOL though:

The problem with this argument is that it assumes that the whole thing was an “honest mistake” on the part of Bernie, that he just read the headline or had it read to him and didn’t do the research. But his remarks in the last 24 hours makes it clear that he doesn’t feel it was a mistake, he feels that he’s somehow the victim, not only of an “attack” by Hillary, but also of being humiliated by the press. So to argue that this is somehow the fault of a WaPo editor lets him off way too lightly, which is totally in line with the media’s efforts to maintain this illusion of his being a viable candidate when most of us on the outside can see that he’s crashing and berning.

Judge strikes down state’s right-to-work law

A Dane County judge struck down Wisconsin’s so-called right-to-work law Friday.

Attorney General Brad Schimel said he would appeal.

Last year, Gov. Scott Walker and his fellow Republicans in the Legislature made Wisconsin the 25th right-to-work state. Such laws bar businesses and unions from reaching labor deals that require workers to pay fees to the union.

Sanders does make one statement here that I was glad to hear, though; he says if Clinton is the nominee, he will support her. I may be mistaken but I think this is the first time he’s come out and said this.

He said it on Seth Meyers’ show too — not sure which tapes first but. Seth had to push for it,

“Would you like to talk about Senator Clinton’s qualifications as compared to something something blah blah”
“Uh, no.”
“Perhaps I didn’t phrase that well. If Senator Clinton somehow ends up the nominee, will you support her in the general election?”
“Oh, absolutely. On her worst day, she’s a hundred times better than any of the Republican candidates.”

Many thanks for sending it so quickly. While I was waiting I ordered a spool of the Kreinik silver #8 braid and the pearl 1/16” ribbon to go with the gold #8 I bought right after I initially asked you about it. Oh, and I also bought a set of embroidery needles with like five different sizes, so I’m all set now—all I have to do is figure out something to make. I’ve been in the mood for bling lately.

Did I mention glitter? I also bought a shitload of glitter because it’s colorful & shiny and makes me happy. Part of my last two evening were spent making glitter swatches with double-sided tape on cardstock.

P.S. It appears that the gauge of needles, like wire, gets thinner (and shorter with smaller holes in the case of needles) as the numbers get larger—is that correct? I’ve always found it sooooo unintuitive. Ditto for seed beads. Drove me nuts in the beginning.

Yep. I mostly stitch with 28s for the cross stitching - the smaller end will work with those, but the #8 braid will be a tight squeeze. A 26 might be better. I’ve used some of the bigger ones when they come with kits (don’t know the sizes of everything I have on hand) and could easily see them working for the ribbons.

The level of invective coming from the Left is reaching parity with your typical wingnut Clinton hate. These people gotta wise the hell up.

Are the people saying these kinds of awful things about Clinton really Democrats who care about the Supreme Court, voting rights, reproductive rights, immigration reform, gun control, LGBT rights, etc.? Or are they just people who for some reason are infatuated with the delusion that a Sanders Presidency will be magical? This is becoming odd. I don’t recall this vitriol in 2008 between the Obama and Clinton camps outside of the PUMAs (who turned out to be no threat by November 2008).

Remember how some on the Left wigged out when the president wouldn’t issue an EO to temporarily rollback DADT? They just couldn’t wait for him to figure out a permanent way to get rid of DADT. As it turned out, he was successful at getting Congress to rid us of DADT. I become very irritated with adults who demand that they get everything they want immediately when they know that life oftentimes doesn’t work that way. A legislative solution to ending DADT outlasts an EO, something I think adults who are politically savvy ought to know.

I think it’s stupid. I don’t think it’s an anti gay law at all. It was passed to protect everybody, including those who are transgender, from pedophiles who would take advantage of the loophole. The safety of 99.5 percent of the population is more important than the wishes of half of one percent. WLOS makes sure to keep this high profile stuff stirred up because it means ratings and money for them. If I was a Bruce Springsteen fan, I would be disappointed that he would cancel for political reasons. Being sick I can understand, but not that. People travel hundreds of miles to these shows and book rooms that can’t always be refunded.

And you can be sure that draconian laws like those will be the law of the land should a Republican win the White House in November. Along with a slew of anti-abortion laws and the de facto merger of the (evangelical Christian) church and state.

Speaking of flags, from March 28:

Saudi man arrested for flying Pride flag above home

A Saudi doctor was arrested by authorities for flying a rainbow pride flag above his home, unaware that it symbolised LGBT rights.

According to CNN Arabic, the doctor had bought the flag online because his children found the colours “pretty”.

The Saudi religious police, or the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, arrested the man after he raised the flag on a three-metre pole above his home in Jeddah.

According to local media, the man was bailed after an “investigation,” and agreed to remove the flag. […]

I got reservations for a remote guest ranch in CA for the July 4th weekend and was doing a happy dance.

Anywhere interesting?

They’re empty calories, which I think means that they don’t count.

I find it interesting that the same people who made excuses for Sanders saying he’d overturn laws he can’t overturn were arguing yesterday that Hillary Clinton was absolutely implying Sanders was unqualified even though she never said it.

Few things bring confirmation bias more strongly than elections.

Ah, the white noise generator. Not as good as the brown note generator or the tsunami/earthquake machine, or as drastic as mind control drones, but not as obvious either.
I, for one, am glad to see that these diabolical Halliburton engines of evil have been confiscated and placed safely back in Democrat hands where they belong.

I’m really glad that HRC had that white noise generator so she could speak to her Rothschild owners in peace, I just hope that team Bernie doesn’t get their hands on one of those special sunglasses or Hillary’s goose is really cooked!

In the extremely unlikely chance that it comes to this pass — hold your nose and do it. In any case, get out there and stump for the down tickets and the 2018 midterms. As annoyed as I am with Bernie right now, his appointees and judicial picks will be one helluva a lot better than anything the Republicans come up with.

But yeah, I am so ready for this primary to be over, and I think Bernie’s gone past the point where he has anything positive to contribute to the Democratic race. I’d have to hold my nose really hard to vote for him, but he’s still the far lesser of the evils out there.
