Friday Night Jazz, or Something Like It: Bill Laurance, “Ready Wednesday”

Bill Laurance is one of the keyboard maestros who sprang fully formed from the Snarky Puppy gestalt, and this track is strange and beautiful. Michael League’s bass lines are totally amazing, but everyone who contributed deserves an award for making awesome music.

From the DVD “Flint” released May 6, 2014 on GroundUP Music

The Panama Papers reveal some interesting stuff about the Iran-Contra deal.

Farhad Azima was a big donor to Bill Clinton’s campaign, and supported Hillary’s Senate run. Now, the Panama papers suggest he had some connections to Reagan’s Iran-contra deals.

In the mid-1980s, senior Reagan administration officials secretly arranged to sell weapons to Iran to help free seven American hostages then use the sale proceeds to fund right-wing Nicaraguan rebels known as the Contras. On a mission to Tehran in 1985, one of Azima’s Boeing 707 cargo planes delivered 23 tons of military equipment, the New York Times reported. Azima has always claimed to know nothing about the flight or even if it happened.

“I’ve had nothing to do with Iran-Contra,” Azima told ICIJ. “I was investigated by every known agency in the U.S. and they decided there was absolutely nothing there,” said Azima. “It was a wild goose chase. The law enforcement and regulators fell for it.”

Now, records obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and other media partners reveal new details about one of America’s most colorful political donors. The records also disclose offshore deals made by another Iran-Contra figure, the Saudi billionaire Adnan Khashoggi.

I was showing my dad Jacob Collier’s video for Hideaway that Charles featured here, and I noticed his ridiculously long fingers. I have short, wide fingers meant for gripping something and not letting go, so I’m a bit jealous as I learn to play the bass guitar. I have to strain and twist my hand a little to reach the octave fret on the E string. He lays his fingers on the frets, and his pinky sticks up nearly a knuckle above the neck.

Well, looks like I’m too late for today, but anyway: Congratulations Elon Musk and SpaceX! It’s been a tough row to hoe, but you did it.

Of course the naysayers would be all over them if they had said this, so I’ll say it: You couldn’t ask for a prettier landing than the one off Vandenberg in January—perfectly centered, vertical, stable, and soft. It was a heartbreaker about the frozen fog keeping the landing leg from latching properly, but Oh, well. Learned a new launch constraint!

After the 2008 crash happened, my leisure activity during downtime in grad school was reading a blog that, while discussing real estate in Irvine, CA, also went into a lot of why the market crash happened. I understood it well enough at that point to explain what had happened and why to friends over lunch at Christmas, a conversation which was overheard by someone who apparently worked with this stuff and interrupted to congratulate me on my understanding.

I’ve forgotten at least half of what I learned then, but it’ll be an interesting read, I think. I’m honestly looking forward to more of the technical aspects of it.

He doesn’t get into the technical aspects too much, but he manages to explain how the entire house of cards was built.

The same author wrote “Liar’s Poker,” about his experiences as a young trader on Wall Street. “The Big Short” ends with him having lunch with his old boss, a guy who hated the “Liar’s Poker” book because it revealed too much of the underside of trading. Even so, that same CEO told a group of college students not to become traders on Wall Street.

I haven’t read Liar’s Poker, but intend to soon.

More slice and dice of the data at 538.
Bernie is not doing as well as his acolytes like to believe and the argument that superdelegates could be swayed is not based on his being more popular in the ,um, popular vote.

Sanders may have had a great night in Wisconsin on Tuesday and will probably have an even more terrific day in Wyoming on Saturday. But in the long run, even if he were somehow to win more pledged delegates, he’d probably still wind up short in the popular vote.

Just watched the Carol Bundy video to Harry Reid.

A couple of things:
1) How in the heck are the Bundys ranching cattle there?
2) Reid did call participants of the Bundy Ranch hootenanny domestic terrorists. So there. But this butthurt seems to come from 2014.

“600 people came armed, they had practiced, they had maneuvered… they set up snipers in strategic locations… they had automatic weapon,” the leading Democrat said Friday. “And they boasted about the fact they put women and children… so they would get hit first.”

“If there were ever an example of people who were domestic violent terrorist wannabes, these are the guys,” Reid concluded.

3) And, really?

“I’m angry today,” Bundy says in her video. “I have four sons in prison. I have a best friend whose husband was shot and Harry Reid put out a YouTube…talking about saving our land for future generations.”

Who’s side are you on Senator?

About the Bundy Ranch standoff perps:

Heller, sitting inches away from Reid in the television studio, rejected the thought. “What Senator Reid may call domestic terrorists, I call patriots,” he said.

Reid interrupted. “These people think they’re patriots, they’re not,” the majority leader insisted. “If they’re patriots, we’re in very big trouble.”

Golly, remember Bernie crowing about the Panama Papers and how he opposed the Panama Free Trade Agreement?
Well, my oh my: (Wash Post)

“I predicted that the passage of this disastrous trade deal would make it easier, not harder, for the wealthy and large corporations to evade taxes by sheltering billions of dollars offshore,” Mr. Sanders said in a news release. “I wish I had been proven wrong about this, but it has now come to light that the extent of Panama’s tax avoidance scams is even worse than I had feared.” Quite a contrast, he says, with Hillary Clinton, who helped push the deal through Congress as Mr. Obama’s secretary of state.

The evidence, however, suggests that the truth is pretty nearly the opposite of what Mr. Sanders claims — and our source for that is the Panama Papers themselves.

You mean the adults in the room considered facts and made an agreement that was a net gain for the USA? Shocked!

What I do mind is the theft of historic artifacts. Jail!

If it were scholarly, then there wouldn’t be so much of a problem (minus the thievery) but it sounds like an propaganda machine with faux ‘archeologists’ pushing the ‘bible as historical fact as written’ crowd. And, then there is the ‘merika was founded on the bible crap, too.

The Kyle McLachlan version. I never watched the SyFy minseries…supposedly it wasn’t as bad.

I like to blame McLachlan—a friend of a friend grew up with him in Spokane and she said he’s just as big an asshole as one would naively assume—but really the whole thing was a mess.

Depends what you mean by ‘real’. If you mean, did Clinton actually use a static noise generator in real life, then no.

If you mean, did someone make up a bizarre story in their head, then yes! It’s completely real!

The TL:DR is that the microphone Clinton used to give a speech, wasn’t connected to as high a quality sound system that a music band used to do a performance at the same event. Sane people would take this to mean that conference PA systems kind of suck compared to bands high end equipment. Wingnuts take this to mean that the Clinton’s must be doing something illegal.

Yeah, the McLachlan one directed by David Lynch was a horror. The voice-over narration was especially annoying, and the pseudo-1930s look was ugh.

The Syfy version had an international cast and was pretty good for a TV adaptation. It’s been years since I saw either one.

TBH, Dune (the book) is so long and complex that fitting all of it into one movie is a daunting challenge. It could be done as a trilogy (maybe) as long as someone required the director not to make each part longer than 2 hours.

Not holding my breath there.

OK, I’ve taken up protesting in front of a church as a “hobby” (this isn’t my first rodeo picketing). The difference between me and those asshats is (a) I understand the rules of engagement for Scottsdale. Those guys, blocking the sidewalk, heck, I’d call the police on me if I did that. (b) I walk back and forth with my sign (for the exercise) and (c) the whole point is to remind Mark Driscoll that he can’t escape what he did in Seattle and set up shop in Arizona consequence-free.

Oh yeah, and I don’t shout at people. I let my signs do the talking. My presence is so upsetting to the church people that they dispatched three people to watch me from the church steps last Sunday. Good. Maybe you’ll think before you give your precious time and hard-earned money to a grifter from Seattle.

Good morning Lizards from a cold and lightly snow flurried on Philadelphia.

Plan on going for a hike (for the exercise and to scout out a park for potential future walks.) Also a way to test out gear combinations as well.

Saw an interesting article in a local Philly paper. Apparently in 2015 the Common Pleas Court (City/County of Philadelphia) issued 575,000 jury summons.

The actual juries ended up being filled by 80,600 (14%) of those sent summons.

Of the rest of the people sent summons 319,000 gave legitimate excuses to avoid service and 175,000 never responded at all.

I guess the next time I get summoned for service I can make a little button with a gavel on it and the caption “I’m one of the 14%” and wear that. And I will also see what I can do locally towards promoting better teaching of civic responsibilities in our schools.

These guys deserve recognition. I see there is no Hip Hop Hall Of Fame, maybe there should be. But Rock & Roll? That’s not it, no more than Agatha Christie wrote Science fiction.

Or am I crazy on this?

Rock and roll guys went gaga for The Beastie Boys (and got them into the Hall of Fame), so I think that the crossover is justified.

Well, figure skates and hockey skates are different in a couple of ways as well since there are differences in what the skater is trying to do wearing them.

Not to mention attempting the moves in full hockey gear. But they looked like they had fun trying.

Should have been a long time ago, but I also have a certain amount of sympathy for the concept of Statute of Limitations.

Understood. And to be clear, he’s not being sentenced for child sexual abuse, but structuring. Since he is pleading guilty, he’s probably going to get a lighter sentence, as opposed to young-earth creationist Kent Hovind, whose sentence was beefed up because he was absolutely unrepentant.

But it’s interesting to note the following:

When Hastert’s sentence ends, prosecutors said, Hastert should be evaluated as a sex offender and never again have any contact with his alleged victims.

chicagotribune.com

I think the prosecutors are able to make this assertion because the underlying basis for the structuring was the fact that Hastert was paying off one of the teens he’d sexually abused. Otherwise it wouldn’t come up.

So much modern music is an amalgamation of all forms of music it really is hard to draw distinct lines in Rock’n’Roll anyway. So…

Hip-Hop has used pieces and parts of a lot of it all. The Beasties being probably one of the clearest examples. Then there was Led Zep…and many blues artists borrowed and changed. Even folk artists passed around traditional songs and modified.

I can’t get excited about what is and isn’t rock and roll. The implicit definition I grew up with (as evidenced by what radio stations played) was that anything that wasn’t country or classical was rock and roll.

Steve Miller was not thrilled with how the event was run, tho prolly shoulda kept it on the down low.

“The whole process needs to be changed from the top to the bottom,” Miller said. “They need to respect the artists they say they’re honoring, but they don’t.”

Miller claimed the Hall only offered him and his family two tickets and asked for thousands of dollars for any additional ones.

“I said ‘I’m playing here, what about my band, what about their wives,” he said. “They make this so unpleasant.”

I guess the worthwhile distinction among genres might be that Disco was never ever Rock & Roll. Bless ya Bob Seger

“Old Time Rock And Roll”

Just take those old records off the shelf
I’ll sit and listen to ‘em by myself
Today’s music ain’t got the same soul
I like that old time rock ‘n’ roll
Don’t try to take me to a disco
You’ll never even get me out on the floor
In ten minutes I’ll be late for the door
I like that old time rock ‘n’ roll

Still like that old time rock ‘n’ roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock ‘n’ roll
Won’t go to hear ‘em play a tango
I’d rather hear some blues or funky old soul
There’s only one sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock ‘n’ roll
Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I’m old-fashioned, say I’m over the hill
Today’s music ain’t got the same soul
I like that old time rock ‘n’ roll

Rock and roll is an outdated term. It can mean vitually anything outside of, while encompassing aspects of, pop.
Totally subjective at this point. Saw a similar discussion of what constitutes ‘punk’ here the other day.
For me, rock has to be heavy AF. Bluesy as all get out. Gunning for the headbangs. QOTSA, Mastodon and the like. Or…

So PZ Myers over at Pharyngula, an ardent Sanders supporter, issued another post reminding all Democratic voters to support the eventual nominee, whoever it is, because letting the GOP run the country would be a disaster.

Because you know how all those Clinton supporters are threatening to vote Trump if they don’t get their way.

I left a comment reminding everyone this is, as I put it, a “quasi-Magic Balance Fairy” stance; and that while my evidence is anecdotal, there’s only one faction of Democratic voters who are vowing to go Full Metal Nilihist if they don’t get their way. And those fine folks would benefit more from this reminder than the other.

Good deal! We had ours built and roofed to match the house, which is a duplex now owned by the woman we share it with, so now we are more glad than ever we did a nice job, because we like her. She likes us too. She said if we move, she’s selling the place.

Heavy theme, deeply, darkly and ironically religious. Western, and more gospel than country. I don’t rave about many albums but their ‘The Kingdom is On Fire’ is a confetti of poignant, tongue-in-cheek and downright disheartening.

Glad to get to the weekend. I’m disconnecting from things for the most part for the next couple of days. On Monday, I have to meet with the schools attorney, as I know many facts firsthand. San Antonio policeman on leave after ‘body-slamming 12-year-old girl’

Texas school officials are investigating a video apparently showing a police officer body-slamming a 12-year-old girl to the ground.

Janissa Valdez’s classmates are heard yelling and laughing in the footage as she is thrown by the policeman, who handcuffs her and leads her away.

She told media in San Antonio that the other children were expecting a fight between her and another girl.

The officer has been placed on leave and is yet to comment.

The incident happened late last month but the footage went viral after being posted on a local blog.

Also, Twitter’s stock price is tanking because they kicked me off forever, took away Milo’s blue check mark, and also @SarahPalinUSA. Twitter doesn’t like white people, that’s all. Back when I was sparring a lot, teaching some I got to workout with some police and trainees. We did some fun stuff, played around with (measured!) resisting getting cuffed then switching roles. A skilled cop can cuff you up despite a surprising amount of resistance especially (of course) with a massive size advantage. No excuse for the video.
I mention all that just because time in exercises like that reduces excessive violence. When a cop feels fear, they flip it to anger. When they have skilled practiced options they don’t get scared so easily, or behind in the situation flow. But getting the time and money for the guys to go is tough.

IMHO, marketplace sellers on Amazon are the way to go. They very rarely screw up or misrepresent stuff, even with shipping they’re usually way cheaper than Amazon, and once they know that you write positive reviews, they bust their butts to get it to you really fast. 75% of the stuff I buy on Amazon is through Marketplace.

(End of plug)

Does this cruise have an all-you-can-eat buffet?

Don’t they all. Just working bathrooms are optional.

re: #232 Great White Snark

Back when I was sparring a lot, teaching some I got to workout with some police and trainees. We did some fun stuff, played around with (measured!) resisting getting cuffed then switching roles. A skilled cop can cuff you up despite a surprising amount of resistance especially (of course) with a massive size advantage. No excuse for the video.
I mention all that just because time in exercises like that reduces excessive violence. When a cop feels fear, they flip it to anger. When they have skilled practiced options they don’t get scared so easily, or behind in the situation flow. But getting the time and money for the guys to go is tough.

Not really related:

And this is why I’m not a politician: the irony of someone complaining about a swipe at Bernie under a picture of a swipe at Hillary.

Tokens I’ve used:

I so wish Septa in Philly would get their shit together and get their smart card fare system working. I think they may be last large American city transit system that still relies on tokens.

Of course, in a perfect world, I could just use my phone. Baby steps, I guess.

I also love the implication that Bernie somehow is beneath photo ops, what with him being the Freedom Jesus that America has been longing for.

The guy’s been a professional politician for over three decades. Give me a break, Bernie Bros.

Opportunity knocking… California could end this man as a politician.

In California, Trump’s aides are still looking for a campaign manager, and in New Jersey, the second-highest ranking staffer left this week. The states hold potentially determinative primary elections on June 7, the last day of voting.

But as far as I can see, there were no academic neuroscientists speaking. The only academics present at the NWF were from the field of management and marketing studies. No speakers are listed as being affiliated with a university neuroscience or psychology department.

So a large international ‘neuroscience’ event has taken place, without the help of any neuroscientists. This is remarkable.

[…]

How should neuroscientists react to neuromarketers? It’s easy for us to mock people who use words such as ‘brainology’, and it’s easy for us to decry them when their work doesn’t match up to academic standards. But are we, neuroscientists, responsible for creating this monster, or at least for feeding it up on a diet of neuro-hype?

Could neuromarketing actually represent an opportunity for doing better and more rigorous research? One of the limitations of academic neuroscience is its distance from real-world behaviour. Notoriously, most neuroscience experiments are run on college students - not a very diverse bunch. Could the neuromarketing scene serve as a bridge by which neuroscientists could find more realistic populations (e.g. employees at large organizations, user databases) in which to test our theories?

Yes, the article ends with questions, as more of them should, maybe?
