We Hope You’re Ready for Another Democratic Debate

Because whether you’re ready or not, here it comes. CNN says they’re webcasting it live here.

According to the latest Marist poll, Clinton now leads Sanders for the April 19 New York primary by 17 points, so things aren’t looking good for Bernie in the Big Apple.

And there’s another piece of news today that could negatively impact Sanders’ chances in New York, where Clinton is already leading among Jewish voters by 33 percentage points: Bernie Sanders Suspends Jewish Outreach Coordinator After Reports of Her Criticisms of Israel.

Two days after the announcement of her hiring, the Sanders presidential campaign suspended its national Jewish outreach coordinator, Simone Zimmerman, on Thursday after revelations that she had posted vulgarities about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel on Facebook.

“She has been suspended while we investigate the matter,” Michael Briggs, a spokesman for Senator Bernie Sanders, wrote in an email.

Ms. Zimmerman’s suspension comes after a report on Wednesday in The Washington Free Beacon, which found a Facebook post in which she used a vulgarity and described Mr. Netanyahu as “arrogant, deceptive, cynical” and “manipulative.” She then used more aggressive language and continued that he had “sanctioned the murder of over 2,000 people this summer.”

They could knock off these tedious National Anthem performances before every debate. I’d be fine with that. My patriotism wouldn’t be impinged upon.

People from other countries must listen to our national anthem and say ‘WTF was that about?’ Three of the four stanzas are questions, and the fourth one is war porn. And it’s impossible to sing.

I would argue Vietnam was worse, on a historical level. Superpowers and Empires have been able to win and hold that area for thousands of years.

Vietnam has never been held for an extended period (save France), and has a history of throwing out many much more powerful nations.

And it’s still no excuse that the reason returns weren’t released was because his wife did them.

I get that there could be a delay in the returns being released so that a tax attorney/CPA would review them for problems, but they’re just plain being evasive. Not a good sign.

If anything it suggests that he’s reluctant to share that he’s a whole lot more wealthy than he’s willing to admit (not that there’s nothing wrong with that, except that he’s been hammering Wall Street types for years).

As someone noted the other day on Twitter, Nader found himself in the midst of a shitstorm when his own finances became public and it turned out he’d received millions from those “evil” companies that progressives of the time hated. So it’s not hard to imagine that Bernie’s biggest worry is not that he has more money than his supporters assume, but that he’s got stocks in finance, fossil fuels, or some other “evil” company that would diminish his “holier than thou” image.

Yes another example of how in the eyes of Bernie Bros there has never been a valid criticism of Bernie ever.

I had a back-and-forth with a Bernie supporter who claimed to be African-American and gay. Said he was utterly fine with taking his chances with Cruz or Trump, because he could not bring himself to vote for Clinton because she’s that ethically unpalatable to him.

To his credit, I guess, he’s claiming that he wouldn’t support Clinton if she were running unopposed.

Guy also doesn’t think that a President Cruz or Trump would get a SCOTUS nom past the Democrats. Because Alito, Scalia and Thomas just magically appeared on the bench once there was a vacancy.

I just don’t understand the Bernie supporter thought process. It really is basically the Ron Paul mindset, just with less racism and bigotry.

I try not to get to smug about the impending shit show in Cleveland, mainly because there’s a good chance the Dem version is going to be unfolding just across the river from me in Philly.

Nope, IRS due date generally follows DC holidays, so when the 15th falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday (Emancipation Day), the due date moves to the next immediate business day, which would be the 18th. However, the 18th is a legal holiday in ME and MA (Patriot Day), so they get yet another day in those states.

Absolutely. Bernthal really makes you feel the pain and anguish that Frank Castle has gone through. I really think it’s an Emmy-worthy performance. It gives the Punisher a humanity I’ve never seen in either the comics or live action.

As for being a nice guy: check out his interview on Conan from when the series dropped. You cannot wrap your head around how such an easy-going, aw-shucks kind of guy can drop into what essentially is a serial killer-type of role.

NK is really bent out of shape by two defections announced last week. First a high ranking member of the military (lieutenant colonel, I think) defected to the South earlier this year, and then 13 restaurant workers in China defected as a group to SK.

Even more irritating to the North is China allowing the 13 to leave, legally, from China.

Depends on which definition you like. The AR-15 family tree is an assault weapon under the old Assault Weapons Ban if it has a certain number of tacticool features drawn from a menu.

It was to commemorate the birthday of Kim Jong-Il, and set the stage for some major upcoming “people’s congress”. Oopsie!

“People’s congress” in the communist nations is an oxymoron of the highest degree. The “people” don’t get to elect their representatives — who are chosen by party members/officials — and the congresses only serve to blather on endlessly during the meetings, then rubber stamp whatever the real bosses tell them to.

But these meetings are Big Stuff in China, Vietnam, Laos and NK, because they serve as nationalist propaganda and as a bone to throw the real people, only a fraction of whom belong to the Party.

I’ve been using the same tax service for decades. I was getting a tax break because I signed up for a credit for first time home buyers that saved me about $800 a year when my interest payments ate most of the house payment. I thought that credit went away when I refinanced but they told me I could renew the credit with the new mortgage, which made me feel pretty good about using the tax service.

Two years ago, the woman I used to see retired and their fees started going up. This year, the base fee was $210 (almost half of my refund), so I don’t think I’m going back next year.

If it’s not a bonafide accountant consider using one. $250 got me $900 from the state and five figures from the Feds (more than double the five figures I managed to get on my own). Suffice it to say it was s good investment.

I don’t get that much every year but they always get me more than I can on my own. And I’m pretty smart (not to toot my own horn or anything) when doing taxes. Well, used to be. Now I need two accountants. Taxes suck. Taxes in two countries sucks more than twice as much.

There was a quake in southern Japan.

At least nine people have died and more than 250 are injured after a powerful earthquake hit southern Japan, toppling buildings and cutting power supplies.

Officials say more people could be trapped under collapsed buildings.

Thousands fled their homes and many people spent the night in the open in the town of Mashiki, near Kumamoto city on the island of Kyushu.

Troops have been sent to the scene but rescue operations are being disrupted by aftershocks, officials said.

re: #50 MsJ

Peshawari Chapli Kabab

900g ground beef
250 g onions (about 3)
4-6 green chillies — serranos work best if Indian green chillies aren’t available
3 tbsp fresh garlic paste
2 tbsp fresh ginger paste
3 tbsp chopped cilantro
2 eggs

2 tsp coriander
2 tsp cumin
2 dried red chiles
2 tsp dried pomegranate arils
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt, plus more to taste
several tablespoons flour, to act as a binding agent

Process:

- finely chop onions and green chillies. The onions may benefit from being blotted with a paper towel, so they’re not moist.
- mince the garlic and ginger, or use pre-made paste in equivalent volume.
- grind spices in a mortar until broken up, but not powdered.
- briefly toasted the red chili in a dry pan, then grind as well.
- use only leaves and fine stems from cilantro tops.
- combine all of the above—onions, garlic, ginger, chiles, and all the ground spices—with the ground meat, and stir then in until the aromatics are distributed throughout the meat.
- add the salt and flour, stirring then in. What you’re looking for a texture that will shape into a patty and not break apart while cooking; traditionally, chickpea flour would be used, but wheat flour works as well. My secret weapon if the mixture seems loose or wet is matzo meal.
- letting this mix sit for 10 or twenty minutes helps the flavors mix.
- form patties that are quite flat—I go for about half a centimeter. Diameter is a matter of preference: I usually make hamburger-bun size (these do go well on a bun), or sausage-patty size (which go well in a flatbread). Shaping the edges carefully—kneading away rough edges, picking out big pieces of vegetable matter—will make the kabab easier to cook without falling apart.
- a chapli kabab is usually shallow-fried in a pan with oil, obtaining an even, crusty texture on the exterior. This is a matter of 3-4 minutes a side, medium-high heat (5 out of 7, on my range). They can also grilled like hamburgers, though they require a bit of care getting them on and off a grill.

- these kababs are usually served with flatbread, like naan or chapati. Pita bread or flour tortillas fill that niche just fine (as do corn ones, in a pinch). They’re also gussied up with condiments like raita (sauces based on strained yoghurt with add-ins) and chutney. I generally put on homemade green chutney (cilantro, mint, and green chili sauce with shallots and lemon juice) and tamarind chutney. Ketchup is a perfectly acceptable substitute for the latter; the former is hard to substitute, and only good when homemade. Other additions include sliced radishes, fresh cilantro, pickled onions, tomatoes, lettuce.

Substitution and Notes:

- basically any ground meat can be used, though a little bit of fat content helps the patties form. Lamb and goat is very common. I’ve made it with chicken as well.
- how fine you chop the aromatics makes a big different in the taste of the end product. I use a food processor to whiz all four ingredients down to fragments equivalent to a fine dice. Ideally, they’re not pureed, but still discreet “dry” bits of vegetable matter.
- the heat of the dish can be controlled by de-seeding and deveining both the red and green chillies. Paprika, particularly a variety with some smoke and heat, can be substituted for the red.
- while ground spices will work, I’d make a case that it’s better to start with whole ones and bash them down to fine bits rather than smooth powder. It makes for a more interesting flavor.
- I must admit that I don’t actually measure the spices closely, so the measures given are guesses. Mostly I do it by nose. You may have to tinker—cooking up small amounts to gauge the taste—and adjust the measures to your preference. This is one of those recipes where everybody’s Mom has their own version, so it’s no foul to change the proportions.
- anardana, dried pomegranate arils, are very mild tasting…basically just slightly tart, somewhat like tamarind. They can be left out, even though they’re traditionally an ingredient. Fresh pomegranate seeds are nice as an alternative, but they makes the kabab fall apart easier—still, if you’re patient, they both look and taste good.
- creating a meat mixture that binds and holds shape can be tricky, and requires a bit of tinkering.

Yummo! Thanks!

The alternative is that there’s a Chapli Kebab package mix by a company called Shan Foods. It’s where I “learned” the recipe: my aunt from Peshawar used to make these awesome kebabs, so I begged her for the recipe. Her response was “who has time to make their own masala…and I don’t like cooking that much anyway, this is the package mix I use.”

So I trial-and-error-ed my way to a recipe that is like the box mix. If you try it out, my one concern is that the numbers on the spices are off. I suspect that onion powder, garlic powder, and something that grants umami (like soy lechtin or Maggi cubes) are also in the box, as is “black salt” (a kind of mineral that tastes and smells like eggs: I don’t think it’s used outside of South Asia)…so judicious additions of those things might bump it up if it’s wanting.

If you search for “chapli kebab recipe” on Google you’ll see that there’s a bunch of similar-but-different recipes.

It’s way more complex than what they’re saying. I would say that in general, although most of us tend to not like abortion, we do believe that the decision should be left to the woman involved since it’s her body. I think the “conservative” tag being attached by some Berners to blacks in the South, of whom I am one, is likely due to our Christian beliefs. If these persons really want to classify us as being “like” conservative southern whites, they need to count the number of blacks they see at “Save the Confederate flag” rallies and the number they see in photos showing some white southerners protesting outside of, and harassing women at, abortion clinics. Whenever I see one of these pics, I always look for someone who looks like myself, and a majority of the time, there are none.

I’ve noticed over the past few days that there have also been attempts to paint HRC as a racist, based on an alleged joke she told. Sorry, Berners, but I’m able to view things in context, and besides, since I grew up under Jim Crow, I’m perfectly capable of determining when someone is/isn’t a racist. HRC just doesn’t come across to me as fitting into that category. If she’s to be condemned on the basis of a joke, which I think was taken out of context, what have the same individuals to say about the very overt playing of the race card by GOP/TPers?

I like the scene where Alec Baldwin imitates Sean Connery on the missile deck: “Ryan, some things in here don’t react well to bullets.” He does a pretty good job of it.

Still, how many Lithuainian submarine commanders speak English with a Scots accent?

Roughly the same number as Morrocan Sharifs who speak English with a Scots accent.

That’s not aimed at black people. Black people don’t need the help of a white guy from Vermont to identify racists.

That’s aimed at liberal white people who are terrified of being considered racist.

My sister (No, not that one. Or that one. THAT one!) told me that Hillary isn’t a Liberal! and was to blame for Walmart’s destruction of America’s small towns.

That’s when I found another FB post to comment on. That sister is the humorless, cause-y sort of Liberal who just gives you a pain. Plus her go-to move in an argument is to recite stuff that never happened. For example, she once said she didn’t give Hillary a pass for being a Goldwater Girl when she was 17, because at 17 she’d run the McGovern Campaign in our county.

Well, she’s not wrong, Hillary isn’t a “liberal,” she is a bit more on the moderate side of things, but a moderate Democrat is still a Democrat.

Bill Clinton and Barack Obama aren’t liberals, either. None of them are to blame for Walmart’s destruction of America’s small towns. That’s all on the customers who shop there.
