Sanders Says He Hasn’t Read Classified Pages of 9/11 Report Because He Doesn’t Want to Lie

Classified documents - how do they work?
Politics • Views: 59,677

YouTube

I’ve set this video to start at the section I found surprisingly, weirdly naïve — as Senator Sanders says he hasn’t read the classified 28 pages of the 9/11 Report for the following reason:

The difficulty is, you see, then if you read them you’re gonna ask me a question, you’re gonna say “you read ‘em, what’s in ‘em?” And now I can tell you honestly I have not read them.

What I find weird: a president has to be able to keep classified material secret — obviously. It’s a fact of international politics that presidents can’t simply reveal secret information because they want to be honest; it’s such a basic part of the job that I find it very odd to hear someone running for president who apparently doesn’t get this.

That’s not the entire interview, of course, but it was one more of many WTF moments in this election season.

Or he could do his job, read the fucking reports, and then say “I can’t tell you because its not authorized” and still not lie about it.

I’m fucking tired of Bernie’s bullshit.

I guess that’s a bit better than covering his eyes with his hands and saying “I can’t see you”…..

At this point, it’s painfully obvious that Sanders does speak to a lot of people who have embraced the idea that someone new needs to be in charge and that we should change the way that the government works. In large part, I agree with that. My problem is, I don’t think Sanders and his dream weavers have any idea on how to get there from here. Nor are they willing to do the hard work to establish the foundation to get us there.

Seems to follow the meme pattern of:

1) have a great idea
2) ?????
3) New economically fair government!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s not like Bernie can’t keep a secret……he won’t tell us how he’ll get legislation passed, he won’t tell us what’s in his tax returns, he won’t tell us if he’s a democrat…….etc., etc.

Yeah I’m going to roll my eyes at this big time. You’re seeking a job where you’re going to have access to confidential information. Bernie continues to make me question his leadership skills and abilities with dumb remarks like that.

Frankly if this guy is the progressives’ best hope then they have only themselves to blame for why they’re not taken seriously because that’s just a terrible answer by any presidential candidate to give to a question like that.

I agree with the nominal principle. Artists do art, writers write and painters paint regardless, but if they can gain and even thrive by letting them have the right to money earned from sales of their work that’s a good thing. My disagreement is that the artist’s heirs and THEIR heirs have that right to benefit. Death plus 20 years is arguably still too much, but I would be willing to accept it under the “widow and children” claim - Barely.

But death plus 70 makes me want to argue for 20 years period.

I’d rather just establish a separate category for characters and properties of major commercial value. Require some type of hearing to get the designation and then the relevant company has to pay a tax for its privilege of owning its copyright indefinitely.

It sucks that fans will miss shows due to boycotts. It sucks for the service people who were depending on the various shows for their income.

People who create these laws don’t respond to shame or criticism. The only thing they might respond to, and ultimately change the law for, is $$$$$.

Collateral dollar damage is an unfortunate part of these boycotts.

I would also say, as a person in the LGBT community, elect better representatives. Get the damn vote out. There are many reasons bigots are in power. Don’t be one of those reasons by being complacent about voting.

I think it’s up to each entertainer to determine how they wish to respond or not respond to the new Jim Crow laws. Duran Duran’s response was lovely, as was Joel McHale’s. Neither one canceled their performance.

re: #72 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

The system between 1923 and 1963 wasn’t broken and didn’t need fixing. Copyright for 17 years, renewable for 25 years on filing the proper paperwork. (and if you live another 25 years, you could keep renewing indefinitely) Don’t renew? No more copyright.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. It was broken. See, the phrase was copyright “WITH NOTICE” for 17 years. Publish without notice or with the notice improperly done (placement, phrasing, etc) and it was now a work of public domain. Oh, and it was one renewal that (again) if properly done and fees paid, extended the duration to 95 years after date of publication.

Copyright also had to be changed because technology. Oh, not computers (at first) but radio and television. The existing rules had no clear basis for covering a live broadcast that turned out to be recorded. Who owned it, the broadcaster, the performers, or the recorders?

In addition there was the fun state-and-federal copyright system. If your work was copyrighted in New York but not nationally, how did you deal with the copies made and sold in California? (unfair question as they had a reciprocity agreement, but not all states had them.)

Changes were needed. The thing is some reasonable things got changed and some, well, Disney.

So you’re saying you favor 7 Mountains Dominionism. Got it…..

Technically, Dark is just engaged in an exceedingly long rationalization process in which Ted Cruz surrounding himself with nutters that are known—and abhorred—quantities in these precincts, talking like those nutters, and doing stuff like shutting down the government over PP funding are stunts to appease the rubes, before he shifts and becomes a “serious” fiscal conservative (who wants a flat tax).

In other words, the entire career of Ted Cruz, politican, has been a long con so he can get the brass ring and transform into a “serious” conservative that David Brooks would accept public displays of affection from, not just grope in a dark room.

So instead of being 100% infuriating, it’s like 60% infuriating, 40% sad. Though those numbers fluctuate when you notice that Dark like to despise the Trumpa-lumpas as horrible little proles, but also appease them so the party can “win.” Which is kind of like railing about how the side piece is a whore, even as you maintain them in an apartment, with a monthly stipend, and routinely make vigorous love to them as your wife sits at home drinking gin and pretending to be resigned to it all as her melancholy and self-doubt fuse into a tumor with a horrible orange comb-over.

re: #62 Dark_Falcon

I’d rather just establish a separate category for characters and properties of major commercial value. Require some type of hearing to get the designation and then the relevant company has to pay a tax for its privilege of owning its copyright indefinitely.

And yes, I just proposed a new tax. Grover Norquist thinks I’m a bad boy.

No. Just no.

Time was, copyright was life of author plus 20. Then life of author plus 50. Then 70. was a definite period of time. Then you could apply to extend. Then the periods were extended. And again. And again. On and on it goes, and it’s no longer about the original author, but the corporate entity that owns said copyrights in what amounts to perpetuity.

Now, we’ve got a situation where Disney is all but controlling copyright law to ensure that their character never enters the public domain, which is the opposite intention of IP, which is to generate improvements and public use after a limited period of exclusive rights of use to exploit the potential of the works.

At the same time, I’m just spitballing but think patents need to be adjusted to reflect the state of the art with respect to pharamceuticals and the time between studying the compound and when they can be approved for human use. Perhaps a rule that provides exclusive use through the approval process plus 5 years, so that the company can recoup the costs, but then the public benefits from generics (though even there, the companies have realized that compounding drugs can extend their exclusivity further at little additional cost).

I’m not a religious person, but I’ve always admired how on this forum all of us, regardless of our religious views and beliefs or lack of same seem to co-exist in pretty damn good harmony.

That being said, all I can do is SMH at the latest nonsense out of the Cruz organization…

Ted Cruz’s national security adviser Frank Gaffney, a notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist, has been urging members of Congress to refuse to meet with participants in today’s National Muslim Advocates Day, where Muslim-Americans around the country went to the U.S. Capitol to meet with their elected representatives and their staff.

<SNIP>
And at least one official followed Gaffney’s advice and refused to meet the group: Sen. Ted Cruz.

According to a statement released today by the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations, which organized the event, Cruz’s staff snubbed a group of Texas Muslim delegates.

While Cruz’s presidential campaign has made defending religious liberty from government attacks a central theme, that message does not appear to include Muslims.

- See more at: rightwingwatch.org

Along with his dodging and weaving when asked exactly how he would protect the rights of a Gay Republican who is concerned that the “Religious Freedom” acts could easily be used to actively discriminate against him, and I really think that the statement “When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross” (not a direct quote from Sinclair Lewis, but sort of combining the essence of a couple of his other quotes) is becoming more an more true.

If you’re not White (or if not, at least know your place), Straight and Christian (their version) then the GOP as little, if any, use for you.

I’ve been both very busy and a bit under the weather the last week, (bad combination), but I’m looking forward to the New York Primary results thread(s) tomorrow

I read what he said and he seemed to be referring more to college parties which feature excessive drinking.

I’m not so sure Cruz is that aware of how to wield power, not when he has consistently been on the wrong end of trying to shut down government to repeal Obamacare, knowing full well Obama would never go along with that BS.

Cruz decided to crater the US economy in furtherance of his jihad against Obamacare.

Billions of dollars in economic losses later, and he’s the alternative to Trump? What exactly has Cruz done successfully as a politician?

I actually think Kasich would be the most disastrous President, then Cruz, then Trump—just based on competence in carrying out their equally repugnant ideologies.

For all the talk of their deep bench last summer, it’s kind of amazing how the GOP is full of people that are basically just crappy politicians. Their base is too unhinged to keep officials honest day-to-day, and so when they crawl out from under their rock they cannot withstand the light of day.

Kasich’s comment is a perfect example. It’s not wrong per se: I am sure a woman who does not go to parties featuring alcohol is less likely to be raped. But you could equally say that I would face less risk of slipping and suffering a head injury in the shower if I bathed wearing a football helmet.

It’s a useless answer to a stupid question. Someone who knew how to predict their comments would play out, especially snippets of them stripped of whatever context in which one tried to coddle them, would never say such a foolish thing.

It shouldn’t be. But if you want to reduce rape, then teaching young women to avoid dangerous situations is a needed part of doing that. It’s not fair, but its The Way It Is. Some men can get drunk and take advantage of vulnerable females, while a very small minority of men are simply predatory and will use venues such as drunken parties to find vulnerable women to victimize.

Teaching young men not to rape is an incomplete solution because a small number of them won’t take the lesson. Thus there need to be other methods deployed to protect women from that small number of men,

“But it’s the woman’s fault…”

This seems to also be the case when it comes to abortion. None of these right-wing pols ever seem to think that, in some cases, some males demand women get abortions because they don’t want to be fathers. I also notice that none of them ever mention punishing the sperm donors for any reason. When Kasich told the female college student to stay away from parties where alcohol is served, I wondered why he didn’t tell the guys that being inebriated is not a justification for rape. As a female, it was clear to me that he thinks women are responsible for insuring that some dude doesn’t rape them. If he thought about the male’s role, he didn’t address it. At. All.

So because some men cannot learn a lesson ALL young women should never attend parties, never go out alone at night or as I was told 50 years ago - never wear red in the spring. These activities are known to excite young men.

Why not simply lock them up unless they are out in the company of their male keeper. Now who follows this type of treatment of women?

Precautions.

And a big gun ( but that is assumed by the GOP).

Reality is that alcohol plays a significant role in campus sex assaults, and the ones who drink to excess are the ones who need education/reeducation - between cutting out the binge drinking and assaulting women because they feel it is their right/obligation to do.

But alcohol destroys lives of domestic partners, families, all across the nation, and telling women that they’re responsible for the situation ignores that it is the men who drink to excess that they are the problem.

Kasich knows his audience though, so he gets a pass. And on and on the sex assault blame the victim BS continues.

Actually, not in most cases. Stranger rapes aren’t very common, and most women who raped are attacked by someone they have at least met and spent a short time with. That’s not a scenario where a gun is going to be useful.

Show us where Teddy chastised his Dad after his father said that the President “should go back to Kenya”.

I clicked on a link to some gaudy jewelry that someone posted here. I’m still getting it for that. Worst mistake was I accidentally clicked on some gun holster accessory because I didn’t realize what it was. The floodgates opened and I had to reject every single recommendation to get that shit off the page. Then I looked at a tote bag made by a militia supply store and I had to do it all over again.I wish they would allow you to just delete entire categories with one click.

re: #202 Dark_Falcon

It shouldn’t be. But if you want to reduce rape, then teaching young women to avoid dangerous situations is a needed part of doing that. It’s not fair, but its The Way It Is. Some men can get drunk and take advantage of vulnerable females, while a very small minority of men are simply predatory and will use venues such as drunken parties to find vulnerable women to victimize.

Teaching young men not to rape is an incomplete solution because a small number of them won’t take the lesson. Thus there need to be other methods deployed to protect women from that small number of men,

Bear with me, this digression is relevant.

Do you know how terrorism works? It’s a political mind game played with violent means. A few actors, significantly smaller in number than those they wish to move, decide certain behavior is required or prohibited. And to encourage that behavior they make examples of those who ‘misbehave’. They kill, maim, and a host of other behaviors all intended to, well, terrorize their targets and persuade them to follow the rules of the minority.

There is no single defense or refutation of terrorism. Part of it is to seek out and neutralize the terrorists. Education and incarceration are preferable as Death, though appearing easy, carries ugly problems of breeding more (you killed my father prepare to die). However, another extremely important - and difficult - tactic is to refuse to give in. Refuse to change your behaviors to match what the terrorists want.

You’re smart. You know where I’m going with this. But I’m closing the circle anyway.

Avoiding situations where the terrorist rapist /might/ strike gives them what they want. Fuck them. And fuck the men who let it happen - who collude with the rapists through their inaction. A woman should be able to enter a bar, get a drink or two, and leave and have a reasonable expectation of going home as unmolested as the men doing the same thing at that bar. Or party.

Please quit blindly protecting them by helping them get what they want.

Transgender bathroom bill fails in Tennessee legislature

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A transgender bathroom bill in the Tennessee legislature failed Monday after the House sponsor said she was withdrawing the legislation while waiting to see how legal challenges play out in other states that have passed similar measures.

The bill’s demise follows intense lobbying from both supporters and opponents of the measure and questions about potential economic fallout if it were to become law.

Rep. Susan Lynn, the Mount Juliet Republican who sponsored the bill in the House, said she needed to tweak the legislation before bringing it back up again next year. From the AP

I would love to say that it failed because the rational and reasonable people in the TN Legislature realized that this bill was wrong, hateful, and unnecessary. I’d also love to have a magic unicorn that shit bitcoins. Both are equally likely.

Truth is they knew that they were going to be hit with multiple suits the moment it was implemented (and I have my doubts if Gov. Haslim would have signed it anyhow).

There was also a lot of pressure from the business community that helped kill it off.

I’d love to say “Good Job Tennessee”, but doing right because you figure you’ll get sued and want to get a stronger bill isn’t something that’s praiseworthy.

I’ve been trying to keep an open mind in the Hillary/Bernie matter. But the scales are really tipping for me with Bernie’s latest hijinks.

Bernie’s message is essentially a good one, and MUCH needed in American politics; he’s absolutely right that big money and vested interests have far too much control over the process. But in so many ways, he’s utterly unrealistic and naïve about how to change this. He’s a utopian absolutist, and that’s a type of person who loses elections in the US.

There isn’t going to be a “revolution.” Right wing groups are trying to help Bernie get nominated because they know the majority of Americans aren’t going to join his “revolution,” and they absolutely dread the idea of competing against Hillary Clinton because she’s smart, tough, and knows EXACTLY how they operate.

When the loss of funding under Title IX was mentioned, one of the GOP/TP lawmakers replied that “he wasn’t worried about Title IX,” which just goes to show that some of them are more focused on fighting social wars than on following the law. re: #272 The Vicious Babushka

#tcot “rape prevention” memes are just excuse to post gun porno.

It’s also built on the assumption that rape is a violent confrontation with a stranger or near-stranger, and that the rapist is not exploiting familiarity and intimacy to initiate rape and/or pettifog about whether consent was given.

But then again, that might not be an error. The parsing of what is “really” rape by various stripes of groups—many being socially conservative in a way that is squeamish about all sex, such that “rape” is not a stand-apart category within the set “all sex is bad,” unless there’s also violence—involves a lot of exclusions and carve-outs, and those conditionals all hinge on raped persons being a certain kind of victim, and behaving during the rape in a manner that makes them a True Scotsman victim.

Dark_Falcon  Apr 18, 2016 • 5:58:30pm

re: #276 Backwoods_Sleuth

re: #235 Dark_Falcon

Actually, not in most cases. Stranger rapes aren’t very common, and most women who raped are attacked by someone they have at least met and spent a short time with. That’s not a scenario where a gun is going to be useful.

There’s also the issue that alcohol doesn’t mix well with firearms.

I believe in armed self defense, but I already made clear that guns weren’t a primary answer in this matter.

Right wingers are circulating this fucked up video today from the “Family Policy Institute of Washington,” one of those insanely bigoted right wing organizations with “Family” in their name. They’re trying to make college students look stupid, and the ultimate point is that we have to keep those damned LGBT freaks OUT OF OUR BATHROOMS PEOPLE.

Groups like this are why I ran away screaming from the right wing. They’re hateful and obsessed.

I, for one, am thrilled that conservatives continue to insist upon opining idiotically on the subject of rape. The GOP might well have an unassailable advantage in the United States Senate by now without this continuing mental malfunction.

I’m sort of going through the 7 stages of Bernie

Intrigued
Interested
Excited
Perturbed
Concerned
Annoyed
Angry

Feel myself tipping over to angry. For a while I thought it was just the Berniacs, I felt they were like over exuberant puppies finding their political feet and just being a bit silly.

The problem for me now is 1. The Berniacs are actually vandals enjoying the bit of slash and burn and 2. Bernie is more than just allowing it to happen, I’m beginning to feel this is his true personality.

I suggest removing “concerned” and placing either “Resigned” or “Dismissive” as the last stage. Sane people who have had a fondness for Sanders are going to have to get over their anger and move on. That means either dismissing Sanders as a fool or becoming resigned to his foolishness and kicking him to the curb as a result.

I’m proud of the citizens of my state for helping Stachowiak and Jones make complete asses of themselves by not showing up for their anti-Muslim rally. The worst thing that could have happened would have been for them to have had a large crowd of like-minded persons attend their event. They were deprived of this opportunity and are now the targets of ridicule because most of the rally attendees were members of the press. Maybe now Jones will go back to FL, and Stachowiak will fade into the sunset, never to be seen or heard from again.

But isn’t that the point when messianic figures, which I believe is Bernie’s followers view of him, are shown to be fallible?

I’m sort of getting the idea that people who initially felt he was a force for positive change (like me) but have moved on are like ex-smokers (like me) who just know they can never go back and never want to light up again and don’t want anyone to do it round them.

It took me a long time to get a W2 I needed from last year, and I only finished over the weekend. If I’m to be honest, though, some of this was because I knew I was going to end up owing the IRS some money. Thankfully, they now do direct debit, which is much easier than sending a check. And if you use Turbotax and eFile its cheaper, too.

Yeah, I noticed that. He wasn’t convincing at all. People who were there don’t need fucking NOTES to remember what it was like—it was burned into their memories forever. Also, when people recall something that awful & traumatic they tend to get that thousand yard stare when mentally reliving it. He didn’t, he just kept reading.

Trump is a lying scumbag and I despise him even more than before (something I didn’t think possible) for using 9/11 like that. If he’d been there, there would’ve been reports, photos, film footage, something—the egotistical prick would’ve made sure of that.

Ruh roh:

Sanders to Sierra Blanca: “Drop Dead!”

Before the rally Sanders invited the three West Texans to meet with him privately, and the Texans ea- gerly agreed. The meeting was no longer than Sanders’ attention span — when it comes to Sierra Blanca. “He didn’t listen,” Curry said. “He had his mind made up.” Afterward, Bernie was giving his pro forma campaign speech, never mentioning nuclear power or nuclear waste. Sierra Blanca activist Bill Addington, who’d ar-rived just that morning to join the march, along with his neighbor Marfa Mendez, had had enough, and he yelled from the crowd, “What about my home, Bernie? What about Sierra Blanca?” Several others joined in. “What about Sierra Blanca, Bernie?” Sanders left the stage, which surprised no one in the small Texas delegation. Ear-lier, he had told them, “My position is un-changed, and you’re not gonna like it.” When they asked if he would visit the site in Sierra Blanca, he said, “AbsolUtely not. I’m gonna be running for re-election in the state of Vermont.”

James Stachowiak wants to see himself as a Winged Hussar charging the forces of the Ottoman Empire during the lifting of the 2nd Siege of Vienna in 1683, when in fact he is just a Don Quixote, tilting at a windmill.

Note: The Winged Hussar reference was made to the jerk’s name, which is of Polish origins. Such cavalry really did play a vital role in lifting that siege, but in recent years some jerks of Polish extraction have used the image of the Winged Hussars charging the Ottomans as a allegory for a perceived need for Christians to “fight the spread of Islam.”

He had to throw some things out to avoid being eclipsed by Trump. Much of the party base wants the USAF to stop worrying about civilian casualties, at least in Syria, and focus primarily on killing Daesh fighters off in job lots.

This is a recurring theme with you, isn’t it? Every someone on your team proposes something insane, or cruel, or criminal, you excuse it with “but he had to because the election, he wants to keep his job, he doesn’t really mean it…”

Theocracy, bigotry, science denial, war crimes, it’s all “but he had to say that, he wouldn’t really vote that way…”

You defend it, you excuse it, you support it, you vote for it, “because god forbid a Democrat should ever be elected.”

No it isn’t. There will always be a small number of evil people who will victimize others if given the opportunity. The problem is the much larger number of men who help them get away with it by minimising it, excusing it, etc. These are the people that need to be educated.
