New York Primary Open Thread

The NY primary is important for the first time in a long time
Politics • Views: 57,133

The New York polls close at 9 pm Eastern, and as we anxiously await the results here’s one of those open threads for our contributors to comment on what the heck is happening. On the Republican side, this is almost certain to be a sweep for Donald Trump, erasing all the delegate gains Ted Cruz has made in recent weeks.

The Democratic side is a little more difficult to predict, but based on polls I think Hillary Clinton is going to come out the winner tonight and take another big step toward locking up the nomination.

Bernie Sanders has already left New York and is heading back to Vermont. He knows he’s going down tonight.

From your lips to God’s ears. But I thought he was in Pennsylvania tonight. Who says he’s heading back to Vermont?

Do we want Trump to clean up and further stymie the Anti-Trump effort?

If DT loses, will he demand a riot? If he wins, will he demand a recount? Inquiring minds want to know.

TRUMP 61% KASICH 24% CRUZ 15%

I’ve got 20 bucks on Trump getting 79 or fewer delegates, so here’s to him doing very well, but not so well as to kill the point spread.

DT will not go quietly. But you knew that. I cold see him inciting violence, and then as it either explodes or simmers to the point of violence, to come forward and play the peacemaker and blame everyone but his extremism on the injuries and I hope not deaths. Donald Trump plays well in some areas. He’s a voice. A person who understands. He’s with you. He holds up 8X10 color glossies of what is playing between their ears. Donald Trump is the pimp in the big car, talking large, saying what you ought to do, and has the people who should know better, because Trumps have fucked them for generations, excited. I think “strong man” comes to mind. Balls. Tough guy. Yeah. mercah. shit. uh huh. yep. you know. right. ‘cause. umm……

Since it looks like we’re going to have the whole Bernie Sandham Clinders business at least through the Oregon primary—and probably all the way through California at the beginning of June—I’d like to take the opportunity to establish some First Principles for both sides in the obviously vain hope that they’ll listen. OK, here goes:

1.) Not everything is a personal attack.

Throwing dollar bills at limos arriving at a fundraiser is not a personal attack, nor is it sexist in any way, unless you’ve been spending Pacman Jones-quality time in certain establishments. Hell, in one of his finest moments, Abbie Hoffman “made it rain” on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and laughed as the suits below scrambled for every dollar bill. This was not sexist. It was a prank, and a fine one, too. Was the money-tossing distasteful? Well, maybe, but the implication that HRC is obliged to her big money donors is no more distasteful than suggesting that Bernie Sanders’ alleged allegiance to the NRA makes him indifferent to the mothers of the murdered children at Sandy Hook. Get over yourselves.

2.) If something is a personal attack, so what?

CNN is doing a clever little series about blood-thirsty presidential campaigns of the past. In 1824, for example, the Jackson folks accused John Quincy Adams of pimping for the Tsar. The Adams people accused Jackson-and his wife-of bigamy. When we get to that level of invective, Robby Mook and Tad Devine can give me a call. Until then, grow a thicker skin, the lot of you. A lot worse is coming in the fall.

3.) Not everything is a dirty trick.

The fact that independent voters failed to meet a deadline for a Democratic primary and, therefore, probably won’t be able to vote in it, is not in any way “voter suppression.” That’s an insult to all those people out in the country whose votes really are being suppressed, as well as to the memory of all those people of the past whose votes were suppressed by virtue of their being murdered. Calm the fck down, please. And stay out of court.

4.) Please make actual arguments in which apples are compared to apples.

The answer to, “Why won’t you release the damn transcripts?” is not “Where are your tax returns?” That is ducking and dodging the question, which is, in case we’ve forgotten, “Why won’t you release the damn transcripts?” If it is because you made nicey-nice with some unpopular thieves, then own it and move on. If it is because almost 40 years of ratfcking has made you justifiably nervous, then the American voter needs to know that, too, before the American voter decides to bring that circus back to Washington.

5.) And, finally, your vote affects me and millions of other people.

Like baseball, an election is a collective statement made up of many individual actions. Therefore, if your binky gets knocked in the dirt, and you throw a tantrum and stay home, we all have to live with those consequences, including a lot of people who don’t share your privilege or your income. If you want to stay home, we can’t stop you. (They can in Australia, but never mind.) But please don’t brag about how you are too fine a person to vote. The blood of Viola Liuzzo and Medgar Evers cries out from the earth in opposition to your prideful vanity.

That’s it. Now go have an election.

Because it’s only 4% of the total votes reported and numbers can be in flux for a while?

If that’s where it sits at when the reported total is 95% we can wonder about how it was close.

Indeed.

And CNN joins the crowd and calls New York for Secretary Clinton.

BeachDem  Apr 19, 2016 • 6:44:19pm

There was a guy at the dailybern who was all excited about his efforts in Westchester County—raising money to buy buttons and rallying the troops for canvassing, particularly in Chappaqua—thinking that would really stick it to Hillary.

Westchester results thus far (about 10% in) Hillary 65.4 to 34.6. Great allocation of time and effort, Berners.

Also, while I hate John Kasich, it would really piss Trump off to lose Manhattan to the Ohio usurper—right now, that’s the only place Trump isn’t ahead.

Sorry for the OT but this tweet reminded me of something that happened earlier today:

We were in the middle of a marathon 4 1/2 hour biz dev meeting today when one of the millennials on staff suddenly asked what Tim McVeigh’s motives had been for blowing up the Murrah building. I explained that in his mind, he was getting revenge for the Waco and Ruby Ridge standoffs. Her next questions - “What standoff in Waco? And what’s Ruby Ridge?”

I wanted to crawl into a hole and die. I couldn’t very well get into all that during a meeting, especially not as the lone non-Republican. I just said that they were armed standoffs with the feds that caused a lot of controversy and suggested she look them up on Google.

And now I feel old. Fuck.

WTF Ted. He’s busy whining about Trump crushing him in NY by a greater margin than by which Cruz won over Trump in Texas.

The current tally shows 62% to Trump, 24 Kasich, 14% for Cruz.

For Clinton, she’s beating Bernie 59-41. 18 points. That’s at a time when Bernie needed to win by that kind of margin. It’s all downhill from here for Bernie. He’s losing big in polling in MD, CT, PA, CA, and there’s no path to the nomination for Bernie. It’s a foregone conclusion.

Same thing with Trump - he’s sealing the deal for his nomination, no matter how much right wing extremists caterwaul over Trump. He’s the candidate they deserve.

Temporary off politics for some food pr0n. Tonight’s dinner was eggplant rolotini (?)* and meatballs in red sauce with cheese.

Eggplant and Meatballs in prep
With cheese!

Baked in the oven for over an hour to get everything toasty hot.

* - Eggplant Rolotini is from Wegmans and is essentially a slice of breaded eggplant wrapped around a ricotta cheese mix. The meatballs were homemade using lean beef with a little ground pork and ground lamb (mix of 80/20 beef and meatloaf mix). The red sauce was homemade as well. Topped with shredded mozzarella and romano.

Sorry for the OT but this tweet reminded me of something that happened earlier today:

[Embedded content]

Fuck.

It was revenge for when the Germans attacked Peal Harbor. Try that next time.

Cruising along, nice smooth ride — HOLY SHIT THERE’S A SNOW CLIFF

That’s called a crown, starting point for a classic hard slab avalanche. This was a big one too, the crown was over five feet tall. All that snow (five feet deep spread over a few football fields) gave way in a matter of seconds. The Rockies have had a serious deep persistent slab problem this winter, that is, a layer of very old snow (from November) that’s very faceted near the ground, like ball bearings. All it took was a guy on a snowmobile to break a certain bond in the snow and you get the large avalanche that you see. Notice the size of the snow chunks at the bottom, debris the size of small cars. Thankfully no one was hurt.

But then Chuckles claimed that it is a window that Bernie must work positively. He can’t be calling her out and do what he has been doing and expect her to listen.

What I’m seeing and we got into this last night is that Kasich is just as a sexist prick as Trump is. I saw some other comments by him today that made me want to smack the little shit, he told LGBT people to get over discrimination. Maybe his fellow Evangelical assholes should get the fuck over that they live in a country that gay people have civil rights but nah Johnny saves his bullshit for those who are discriminated against.

From the people who know him best:

President Get-Over-It: John Kasich’s Leadership Strategy Illuminated

The false-front persona Kasich has been deploying since announcing his bid for the Presidency is nothing more than a political marketing product, and not a very believable one, but occasionally the mask slips.

OK, often the mask slips, and Kasich is returned to his arrogant, prickly, rude, off-putting jerk self. Not that anyone outside of Ohio would notice because, well, as the Republican primary has thus far demonstrated, nobody outside of Ohio gives a damn about John Kasich.

But one particular phrase has repeatedly popped out of Kasich’s mouth in these moments that perfectly encapsulates the Kasich gubernatorial experience: Get Over It.

The Green Papers projects it out as Clinton 137 Delegates and Sanders 104. I wonder if the Democratic Party is going to think about perhaps being a bit less ‘aggressively proportional’ in terms of allocation of delegates the next time around.

Of the 126,000 Democratic voters taken off from the rolls in Brooklyn, Ryan said 12,000 had moved out of borough, while 44,000 more had been placed in an inactive file after mailings to their homes bounced back. An additional 70,000 were already inactive and, having failed to vote in two successive federal elections or respond to cancel notices, were removed

For normal evening drinking, though, I’ve found that bourbons have a permanent place in my heart. Reasonably cheap, just the right amount of bite, and go well with a Coke if I feel like mixing.

My one friend buys differing brands of real ginger ale at Anderson’s here in Ohio. He mixes that with bourbons and they are nice and spicy, a touch sweet and accent the bourbon. Real fine. And he makes ‘em strong.

There are people I know who do that whenever a loss happens. If their candidate loses, it must be fraud. Exit polling is far from an exact science. You’d think these people would realize that by now and stop getting their hopes up but nope.

And anybody who thinks Sanders’ campaign has some sort of obligation to fold up shop overnight is on bath salts. This is de rigueur. Don’t let your supporters instantly feel like they no longer matter.

She totally did that on purpose.
Walked into my office, barfed, left.

That was nice of her to do. At least she didn’t do it in a corner out of earshot.

There have been times when I hear my cat get ready to hurl and I try to put a newspaper or junk mail in front of her. She ends up running away and barfing in 3-4 places.

And then what Tad? I mean I guess I expect him to say something like this but those states aren’t going to be good to Bernie at all. They may in fact be even worse in say MD which has quite a sizable African-American bloc.

Maryland is coming up next week. I might have to take a break from Facebook…

re: #329 Mattand

You and Observer Art have been really great instructors as to what Kasich is really about. I knew nothing of the guy until he decided to join Krazy Klown Kar 2016. Both your commentaries have been insightful.

Given the state of perpetual dickishness my cuddly Governor Christie constantly swathes himself in, I kinda feel a camaraderie with you two, as only people whose states are run by rage-addled Republicans truly understand.

Heh. Glad to help!

I don’t know if BeachDem was in Columbus at the time, but I and a business partner did some design work for a guy by the name of Jerry Hammond, First Black Columbus City Council President, who kicked around the idea of a run for mayor of Columbus. The Black women who worked as one of his campaign managers who we dealt with directly knew of Kasich and his early connections to Leslie Wexner (Limited, Victoria’s Secret, Bath & Bodyworks, Lane Bryant, etc., etc.) which led to some speculation about his early political ambitions. That was late 70s. Been following him ever since.

A lot of it is new active participant thinking. Politics is the closest thing some people have to an event of real consequence, and they get very emotionally invested. It can be tough to lose and accept that sometimes you lose.

I already feel like I need a break now. I’ve about had it with purer than thou progressives who think it’s all about them- bitch about a closed primary system and then show the reason why the closed primary system exists in the first place by talking about how they’ll write Bernie in or vote for Stein. Yeah, that’s the ticket guys and you wonder why the DNC doesn’t take you seriously. You could be adults and try to work to implement change within the Democratic Party but it’s easier to bitch about the DLC, centrists, and things that go bump in the night.

Yeah I know the feeling. I was really sad when Kerry lost in 2004. I don’t get emotional over victories and defeats anymore. I do get frustrated with how pig headed some people are though.

A lot of it is coming from friends of mine too. I mean damn it’s sad man because you know what? I know many of these people have their hearts in the right place. They want policies that will make us a better country and goddamnit I appreciate that but some of them I just want to smack for being ideologically self-centered.

Vented spleen is a healthy part of the party process. I honestly don’t think the GOP would be trumploding right now if supporters of Huckabee, Santorum, etc. hadn’t felt so taken for granted for the last thirty years.

I voted, for the first in my life, by absentee ballot in the NY primary this year. My wife and I are visiting her family in Baltimore ‘burbs, where her brother and sister voted early this morning. There are so many local, state, and of course national primaries in play in MD, that NY’s primary looked boring by comparison.

Btw, my neighborhood went for Clinton (77.4% or 284 votes) and Kasich (55.1% or 22 votes).

I wish our voters would show the same excitement for local races that the TP whackjobs do. I hate the bigoted bastards but they understand the value of local politics far better than the left does.
