I’m not sure Samantha Bee couldn’t beat Donald Trump in a general election. And to be quite honest, she is at least equally qualified.

Stranger than even The Onion could conceive, for sure.

“Newlywed husband sneaks out of hotel room, buys 100 cans of soup”

Or a parody of a Dear Abby letter:

“Dear Abby,
My darling husband just did the weirdest thing on our honeymoon. While I was sleeping, he snuck out to buy 100 cans of soup at the local grocery and brought them back. Totally surprised, I thanked him, but the next morning, while he was in the shower, I returned all 100 cans to the grocery. Now he’s upset with me.

Did I do something wrong?

Perplexed in Texased”

When Sanders lost Ohio, I saw Bernie people complaining that his supporters, thinking Sanders would win, voted in the Republican contest instead. A closed primary like NY’s would have prevented that as well.

Rage Furby is advising his readers to short Netflix stock, because he says it’s doomed.

Why? Because Netflix CEO supports progressive causes like, um, education.

The Johnson dollar diversity dilemma hypothesis is that you can tell how badly a company is doing by how much its CEO and board signal progressive causes-and that you can use that information to short a company stock.

—-> snip < —-
Enter Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, who announced a $100 million effort to use Netflix to teach blacks and Hispanics. Oh boy. Are we really back to thinking MOOCs will save the world?

He has also predicted the end of Twitter, which had $2B in revenues for FY2015 with only $500M in liabilities, because Twitter’s share price has tumbled over the last several months.

If any of his readers takes his investment advice, I feel sorry for them.

ADDENDUM:

Netflix will fail because of “human biodiversity.” This is a fancy term cooked up by the scientific racism people.

Hastings’s charity is useful because Hastings, a former Peace Corps member, hasn’t taken seriously human biodiversity, that is the study of how humans are biologically different from one another.

The insights from human biodiversity are relevant because Netflix’s stock price rests on the stupid assumption that the rest of the world will consume Netflix like America.

Hastings has long not understand this phenomenon, as an article in his school newspaper about his pathological white altruism shows.

Their so-called scientific reasoning clearly pre-supposes there are significant differences among the “races,” and so they find data to support that hypothesis. Rage Furby links to a blog called hbd chick, maintained by a woman with very little training in biology or genetics. I may be jumping to conclusions based on my brief perusal of her blog, but she’s definitely skewed toward assuming white Europeans are the shiznit and everyone else (like the “arabisized” nations) are inherently inferior, because human biodiversity!

Yup. The thing about that book is the first half is OK, scientifically speaking. The second half, in which the authors interpret the first half’s meaning to society and human behavior, is completely non-scientific. It’s just their opinions, but it *sounds* scientific.

Earlier today they had this on the front page….

New York Provides a Last Chance at Redemption for the Pollsters

… basically Leon Wolf was claiming that all the NY polls were overstating Trump’s chances.

For some reason, it was removed from the front page. It’s even removed from Wolf’s article list. The article has tags on it, like Donald Trump, but if you go to any of those tags, it’s not listed there either.

Fortunately I still had the link in my history….

The same Leon Wolf has the current headline at RedState, in which he writes:

After this part of the ritual is done, the panelists will go right back to explaining how Trump is just a huge winner and his victory is inevitable, and what Ted Cruz is doing is just futile. I guess they hope you don’t remember how they just explained that Trump will be the first front runner who didn’t clinch before the convention in the last 40 years.

Butthurt indeed.

Even if Cruz won every remaining Republican delegate he won’t make it to 1237, so it is futile to think Cruz can win the nomination based on delegates won.

And Trump is inevitable, unless the GOP decides on day 1 to dump all their rules and throw out all the votes. Which they won’t do.

GotNwes has skipped over the Cathy Young alt-right BS from Rage Furby to his latest attempt at financial analysis.

Netflix $NTFX doomed because it’s not white (supremacist) enough, says Chuck Johnson

Award Winning JournalistTM Chuck C. Johnson is now trying to do to financial analysis what he’s done to journalism. He wants his readers to short Netflix stock, based on his own very special investment hypothesis.

Here’s the short version.

Netflix isn’t white supremacist enough.

Well, that’s the first part of his argument, anyway. The second half involves more traditional financial analysis with numbers and stuff, but his primary argument is Netflix — and Twitter — share prices are tumbling because they aren’t white enough.

It’s part of his “Johnson dollar diversity dilemma hypothesis,” which “is that you can tell how badly a company is doing by how much its CEO and board signal progressive causes.”

And as we well know, supporting progressive causes just tanks companies right away. Take Microsoft, for example.

The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for March 2016 was the highest for this month in the 1880-2016 record, at 1.22°C (2.20°F) above the 20th century average of 12.7°C (54.9°F). This surpassed the previous record set in 2015 by 0.32°C / (0.58°F), and marks the highest monthly temperature departure among all 1,635 months on record, surpassing the previous all-time record set just last month by 0.01°C (0.02°F). Overall, the nine highest monthly temperature departures in the record have all occurred in the past nine months. March 2016 also marks the 11th consecutive month a monthly global temperature record has been broken, the longest such streak in NOAA’s 137 years of record keeping.

Well, records are meant to be broken, aren’t they?

Yet I don’t expect people to really do what it will take to keep us from heading towards massive change. Transgender women men (born female but male) are probably able to live day-to-day, like the dude in this tweet, without much trouble. It’s a male dominant society, and if you do male stuff - even a transgender woman - you can probably feel safe.*

Transgender men women (born male but female), OTOH, have to deal with a bunch of bullshit. That’s where this whole fucking panicky bathroom law horseshit comes from. Oh fucking no! Men dressed as women using the women’s room to assault our little girls! This is *a legitimate concern* with conservative lawmakers in the old Confederacy.

Yes, it’s bigotry. It’s stupid base fear that’s permeating hate against peaceful human beings. I’ve never ever heard of a transgender person even committing a crime. I live in rural Colorado, have most of my life. We would have heard of that shit immediately if it ever happened. There is no goddamned mother fucking transgender bathroom problem in the United States. Conservatives made it up, like the boogey man.

*This is dependent on the community. I realize it’s hard out there for *any* LBGT folk in the United States, it varies by degree

Message in a bottle, promising finder a shilling, bobs up after 108 years

theguardian.com

A marine biologist in 1906 dropped more than a thousand bottles with messages tucked inside into the North Sea, to track sea currents. A German woman found one while vacationing in 2015, and dutifully followed the instructions in the bottle. The marine biology institute, which is still operating, sent her one bob (from the 1900s) in return.

You’ve got your terminology backwards. A transgener man identifies as a man, a trans woman as a woman. The reason for this is it’s rude to identify them with the birth gender they left behind. Also tons of trans men have been attacked raped and murdered.

From salon.com:

Today, April 19, is the New York primary. It is one of the most important days in the presidential campaign, and can have an enormous impact on the election, potentially helping to give Bernie Sanders the further momentum he needs to challenge firmly entrenched establishment forces, or conversely cementing Hillary Clinton’s status as the “inevitable” nominee.

More than one-quarter (27 percent) of New York’s registered voters, however, are unable to vote in this critical primary today. 3.2 million New Yorkers cannot participate, because they are registered either as independents or with third parties.

New York is one of 11 U.S. states that has a closed primary system, which effectively guarantees that the Democratic and Republican Parties control electoral politics.

Why is this news? Because a lot of Americans are obviously unaware of how their electoral system works.

And why is that suddenly news? Because it is working against their interests!

I think we can all agree that the most glaring ommission from the Sanders’ campaign was a comprehensive GOTV drive.

Whether that was an error (because Weaver is out of his depth) or because it was a calculated effort to run as a Democrat while earning indy cred (in which case Weaver is also an idiot) will be fodder for the historians.

What is now an accomplished fact, is that this inability to get motivated Sanders supporters to register early has cost the campaign at least a few of those sweet, precious delegates.

Error of judgement? The wages of ignorance? The misfiring of an establishment-busting optics superweapon?
Jeff Weaver is both an idiot and out of his depth.
And this is a rod made by Bernie for his own back.

Edited.

Just back from scanning the Intertube’s NY primary wisdom. You’re at the start of a nice trip, and she won’t introduce one of her best characters, Signorina Elletra, for a couple more books. A caution—you can see Leon’s own progress through the 25 years of writing, and it gets a little depressed around the 2/3 point. She comes back to a good state in the later books. (It becomes obvious that each book picks up a social theme in Italian/World ‘problems’, as seen through the detective.)

Prisoners are buying these tiny mobile phones from Amazon … and hiding them inside themselves.

With a 0.66-inch screen, the Zanco Fly is apparently the world’s smallest mobile phone, but you won’t find them on the high street.

Prisoners are buying the items, made by an unknown company, from Amazon — and leaving some hilariously good reviews.

Today the Michigan AG is going to be announcing indictments over the Flint water crisis. Gov. Synder isn’t among those to be indicted, which is a shame, since it was his actions that directly and proximately led to the poisoning of the city residents of Flint. Without his demand to shift the water supply to save money, Flint water would have remained on the safe (and actually cheaper) Detroit water supply.

So, what’s Synder doing about all this. He’s claiming that he’s going to drink Flint water for the next 30 days.

Big frickin’ deal.

Let residents choose the tap. I doubt he’d feel nearly as safe under those circumstances.

I’d be more impressed if Snyder spent 30 days replacing pipe across Flint, because so far no mains/lines have been replaced, which is the only permanent fix to the problem. Nor is giving low cost loans to people who can barely afford their homes to replace the pipes in their homes damaged by the corrosive Flint river water a solution.

The state damaged their water supply, and loans aren’t a solution. It’s an excuse.

Exactly. Tough shit for Moore and the other Bernie fanatics if they don’t get that. And as I said last night by constantly threatening to leave the party when things don’t go your way, well you’re proving why closed primaries exist in the first place. Parties want their candidates to be nominated by people who at least will have some loyalty to their party and not take their ball home. Anyhow, in four to eight years, they’re going to have forgotten all about Bernie and have some other pony that they’ll attach themselves to and that person will likely fail for similar reasons Bernie has and they still won’t get it. Many elements of the progressive left need to learn how to talk to people without being condescending assholes.

They saw the Democratic party understandably as his best chance into the WH. And that’s okay since the Democratic Party’s rules permitted him to run but in the end Democrats are nominating the next Democratic nominee for president. Sucks that bothers Moore so much. I’d have a lot more sympathy for people like him and the other self fancied progressives I know who bitch about time and time again about how the party is too “corporate” if they actually realized that building a party takes work.

Though to be fair, I think Adorama in NYC and Unique Photo in Fairfield NJ are pretty impressive camera stores in their own right. You can’t go wrong with any of them for gear or tips/tricks to improve your photography.

re: #86 Cheechako

Last night I posted that I would post more info on this “accidental” shooting if I found any. Here’s what I found today:

Alaska man fatally shot while taking photos of people firing off rounds at gravel pit gun range

From the story:

“I have had cases where people have fired guns in my direction from behind me,” Dillon Barron, who has been to the gravel pits but now avoids the area. “There’s usually never a firing line established and other shooters fail to communicate with one another if they have to go downrange. This is where it gets dangerous. Add alcohol and ATV riders to the mix, and you can easily see how it’s an accident waiting to happen.”

Investigators have not said whether alcohol was involved in the fatal shooting, but neighbors have asked city officials to improve safety conditions at the gravel pits — which they said attracts drugs and crime.

“Alcohol, drugs, there’s people talking about hypodermic needles sitting out there,” Meyers said. “Some people are comparing it to like the Wild West. You can just go out there and do what you want to do.”

Freedom! Don’t tread on ME!

Wouldn’t a gravel pit have an owner who could be sued by the deceased’s family?

Belafon  Apr 20, 2016 • 6:43:55am

During dinner, my family and I have started watching Animaniacs now on Netflix. We watched episode 3 last night, which introduced Slappy the Squirrel. She’s watching TV episodes from when she was an actress. This particular episode is of her working on a skyscraper. The wolf, her nemesis and coworker, is trying to sneak up on her. He’s dressed in overalls, but when he tries to tiptoe quietly, he grabs the overalls and lifts them up like a dress, revealing women’s legs in stockings. The end of the overalls/skirt had wolf’s feet.

When that showed, I happened to look at my 16 year old. He absolutely lost it. The feet were too much for him.

The biggest difference to me in someone like Clinton and someone like Sanders is that Clinton sees that someone like Sanders has a place in the Democratic party, she did raise money for his Senate election. Someone like Sanders OTOH thinks anyone with even a pragmatic approach to things is no different than a Republican. I admire Bernie’s idealism but he has none of the pragmatism or understanding of humanity that makes good leaders and that’s shown big time this primary.

Trump only has the nomination if he clinches before the convention. Sadly, the odds of that went up yesterday.

Schilling’s party is filled with more people who have committed crimes in bathrooms than transgendered people so because of that, I’m going to write Governor McAuliffe and ask that he support a ban on Republicans using the same bathrooms as non-Republicans. //

Of course, these numbers are just one way of looking at media bias in the presidential campaign. For instance, while the press has hit Clinton more frequently, Crimson Hexagon also found that it’s paid much more attention to her than to Bernie Sanders. And, by design, this kind of analysis may overlook other ways the press can hurt a candidate — like Sanders — by downplaying or dismissing his or her chances.

Still, Sanders’s supporters have widely accused the media of being in the tank for Clinton. And these numbers suggest that perception may not square with reality.

I have to admit, I’ve always hated that. If they truly merely hated the sin, they wouldn’t be okay with policies that treat them like second class citizens but shocker, they do. Right wingers don’t merely refuse to acknowledge the rights of LGBTQ individuals, they refuse to acknowledge them as human beings and you have that with Cruz’s various pastors including his fuckwad of a father who say shit about gay people being demonically possessed.

Crimson Hexagon then took more than 170,000 posts by these outlets — stories published from January 1, 2015, until close to today — and ran them through their “auto-sentiment” tool. The software scans tens of thousands of stories within minutes for positive or negative language, sorts them into separate buckets, and tallies up the results.

Yeah, this “Crimson Hexagon” might do wonders for marketing research but those positives in the graph seem iffy.

Going by my experience with media treating Clinton, I have to say I think they have treated her more harshly even if you factor out FOX News.
I’m going to pretend the human race doesn’t possess the technological ability to decided whether a news story is objectively ‘positive’ or ‘negative’.

She went “Is that a gaaaay thing?”

I said back “No, it’s a bigot thing”

That opened the floodgates for a non-stop “Love the sinner, hate the sin” rant that I just had to walk away from. She wouldn’t stop to give me a chance to respond. At no point did she appear to love the sinner. She had no idea what my ‘sin’ was.

Actually, it sounds like a standard machine learning algorithm I learned in my Intelligent Systems classes in college. The example we were given was writing a spam filter. Even the simple approach - where you trained a naïve Bayesian network just by removing the simple words (a, and, the, is, etc.) - would yield a 70-80% correct match.

2) What percentage of the workforce do Republicans believe actually wears work boots? And of that percentage, how many of them wear them off the clock? To tourists spots while on vacation? I mean aside from someone who is artificially proud of being blue collar and absolutely wants you to know it?

3) How many construction jobs are available in Downtown Hollywood?

My wife loves Castle and was telling me about this. She said the stories are that Katic and Nathan Fillian never really saw eye-to-eye and that she was a bit of a diva. I replied that it looks to me like Nathan is one as well.

Nathan Fillian is one of the nicest human beings I’ve seen online. He is not in-your-face but he is really good hearted. I had heard the two didn’t get along so well. Also, last year during negotiations, when it wasn’t known whether either would come back, she wanted more behind-the-scenes responsibility and more direction as to what her character would do.

Whatever. I love Castle and will continue to watch it if it continues to be good. Last week’s episode was great. No matter who the players are, to me, a good show is a good show is a good show. I am not invested in the relationship. I want entertainment and that doesn’t have to have a romantic aspect.

It’s a responsibility he’s not cut out for. He has zero understanding, and less than zero concern, about the real lives of the real people and real government he’s supposed to mascot for.

Whatever the Royal Family thought of Princess/Lady Diane, she gave the Realm not one but two viable male heirs. Just look back at British history to see all the tribulations they have endured over the lack of a viable male heir…

I don’t know. I had just heard that a couple places.

I suspect it’s wishful thinking among the ‘Charles is a bastard/Diana was a saint!’ crowd.

Say what you will about Charles, he has been steadfast is his love for Camilla for decades now. It’s not like he cheated on Diana with a series of starlets and lesser aristocracy. It was a forced marriage like they have been for royalty since time immemorial, and it’s only modern times where we expect, somehow, that a marriage for royalty is supposed to be about love and fidelity.

The thing about it is the guy who originally posted it is supposedly fervently pro-union.

People are calling him out on it, but he says he’s not so much of a Trump supporter as he thinks he’s entertaining, and besides what power does the President really have? He heard Congress really runs everything anyway!

… completely factoring out the Presidential appointment of SCOTUS members, who absolutely have the power to cripple unions. And they already have to a large extent.

Executive policy alone can really change things. My grandfather was a NLRB lifer. Started there in its inception under Roosevelt and retired in the early years of Nixon. But yeah he’s clueless if he thinks the president can’t do much to effect union rights.

The question arose about why he never married Camilla in the first place, and the main reason was that she was no longer a virgin, and that was still a requirement for becoming Queen.

There’s 1,646 still available (according to Google). With 1,428 delegates (not counting the supers), she’d have to win 955 remaining delegates to get nomination without adding in supers. That works out to 58%.

For Bernie, he’d have to win 1232 of the 1646 still to be decided (2,382 - 1,151). That works out to 74%.

Right now, Hillary’s got 10+ point leads nearly all in the upcoming races. She’ll very quickly top 2,383 counting supers.

Up 9.5 in CA
Up 20+ in MD
Up 9 in CT
Up 13 in PA.

Mind you, Bernie needs to be winning by massive margins to make up ground. He isn’t and wont. But this is the same exact situation that’s been in place since after Super Tuesday.

Bernie’s had his best days already. The caucuses and over 90% white states are over. It’s his own damned fault for not having a campaign strategy that wasn’t inclusive towards non-whites. I don’t think Bernie is a bigot but the way he dismissed the southern states rightfully bothered a lot of the African-Americans who live and vote in those states who have been much more loyal to the Democratic Party and its values than the young kids who got excited about Bernie.

Hardly his fault. For that matter, sending the bride to the doctor to certify her virginity isn’t very modern, either.

And one might argue that having something on the side is, indeed, very modern, and no longer solely the prerogative of the aristocracy.

So regarding those people who were deemed invalid for not having voted in the last two federal elections? I assume they would have gotten a notification in the mail about that. I’m sorry but I just don’t believe that people were told “You didn’t vote in the last two elections ergo you can’t vote.” And frankly, the bellyaching about the primary being open only to Democrats and how Bernie would have won if independents were included is stupid. Bernie and Hillary are running for the Democratic party’s nomination. So those bitching about that like Michael Moore can honestly read about what their candidate is actually running for before they bitch about why parties want people in their party to have more of a say who their party nominee for president is than people who aren’t in their party.

Shaun King is still playing his martyr cookies over yesterday’s kerfuffle over how his writing showed entire paragraphs lifted from other sources without attribution (otherwise known as plagiarism). The Daily News canned the editor who worked on a bunch of his pieces for incompetence, but some of that blame has to fall on King himself, precisely because he keeps quoting entire blocks of text instead of rewriting them. It’s laziness on his part, and incompetence on the part of his editors.

His back and forth with Brian Stelter today is more of the same, as is his belief that he’s just like MLK (retweeting someone who made that equivalency).

Bhumipol and the queen are almost worshiped as demi-gods in Thailand, but their son is a notorious playboy and not well liked at all, though few Thais would dare to say as much publicly. The government takes the lese majeste laws very seriously. When Bhumipol does leave this mortal plain, it will be very emotional time in Thailand. That may be partly why the military seized power, to keep things under control during the succession.

Many ex-pat Thais (meaning they aren’t in immediate danger if they criticize the junta) say the military is using the lese majeste laws to oppress (small d) democrats. They make a very strong case.
