Treasury Announces Harriet Tubman on $20 Bill, Breitbart Commenters Erupt in Racism

The right wing base is sick
Wingnuts • Views: 77,780

The Treasury Department announced today that a portrait of former slave Harriet Tubman will replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, the first African American ever to be featured on US money.

Normal people in the United States are probably pleased to see this; it’s a long overdue symbolic acknowledgment of people who’ve been marginalized and ignored for too long.

But let’s check in at Breitbart “News” and see how their very numerous and vocal commenting community is reacting to this, shall we?

These excerpts from their comment section are hidden by default, for reasons that will be obvious.

Yep, the US Government (Emperor Nggr) doesn’t like winners.

[…]

Looks like its going to be all Fives and Tens for me, from now on. Like I would ever carry a bill with a PC nggrr on it.

[…]

Harriet Tubman was nobody, just another magic negro media creation to try and make blacks feel like they ever contributed anything to this country.

[…]

Instead of changing out the currency, at great expense, why not just saturate the bills with the oder of KFC, WATERMELLON, etc? Would that not please them?

[…]

Watermellon scented would be kind of nice! Cover up the smell of seminal fluids and cocaine.

[…]

If they want to make the black folk happy and comfortable, then have her holding an EBT card in one hand and bindle of heroin in the other, while smoking a crack pipe.

[…]

Lol, who cares? F the nggrrs.

[…]

The simian features in the $20 portrait are what shocked me.

[…]

I will watermelon stamp mine, pass down the line!

[…]

Put Obammy on a three dollar bill

[…]

Can’t. He’s still alive.

[…]

We can fix that.

[…]

The United States Of Negro…

[…]

Chimps of America

[…]

Watermelon rubber stamps can be purchased on Amazon, in case anyone wants to start come race controversy with this new $20 bill.

[…]

Is Jane Goodall on the back?

[…]

She mated with Chimps.

[…]

The Swahili Mega Lips $100 bill is next.

[…]

Put a watermelon on the back.

[…]

Will my wallet close with them big lips in there?

[…]

Finally Koko the Gorilla’s sign language skills get her honored!

[…]

White Genocide via Currency

[…]

Well I’ve heard of chump change, now we have chimp change.

This is just from the first few pages of more than 2000 comments in just a short time. There’s absolutely no difference between Breitbart “News” and the Stormfront white supremacist site now. Breitbart has turned racism into a right wing business model.

I think I’ll just take your word for it that they’re being racist. I don’t even read the comments in newspaper articles anymore except for the reader’s choice’ comments at the NYT (and if the article is about Bernie or Clinton, I don’t read those either).

Breitbart, Dim Hoft’s wretched hive of scum and idiocy, and the Freepers are all losing their minds over this change. Links under here:

Angry, butthurt RWNJs are pissed that a black woman is going to be on their money. I love it.

The actual picture used on the bill will probably be tweaked over and over before actual printing, and even afterwards, with new series. If one has been paying attention, the looks of Washington, Lincoln, Hamilton and Jackson has changed over the last half century.

So many stereotypes, so little time. Where do I begin? I don’t have “Swahili Mega Lips.” My thin lips come from my mom and dad. I’ve never had an EBT card. I have always used cash and my Master Card for all purchases. I’ve never used heroin. In fact, I’m allergic to certain drugs, heroin derivatives being one. I’m not a “media creation who thinks I’ve contributed something to this country.” I actually did contribute to the education of thousands of kids by teaching high school for over 30 years and having students who went on to have successful careers in many fields. I don’t promote genocide toward any group of humans, so these guys can stop with the idea that just because someone is a member of a particular racial group, s/he hates other races of peoples. These guys really need new talking points because those they are currently using don’t match reality. I would feel sorry for them if they deserved it, but they don’t because what they’re pushing is 100% refined hate based on their skewed view of the world.

LOL!

I can very clearly remember being scared out of the room by the flying monkey scene, even when it was just a part of the preview that the network would show to plug the movie.

It seems so quaint that certain movies on TV used to be such a special event. It seemed like The Wizard of Oz would only get shown one or two times a year and it became a family event to stay home and watch it (in black and white).

In the previous thread Decatur Deb posted:

Robinson at Freep just declared Trump the nominee and has begun the purge of die-hard Cruze fans. So sad.

So, I ambled over and indeed, the purging has begun. Again.
About a month ago someone at FR put up a topic about how much longer Freepathons are taking these days, and how embarrassing it is that grifting is getting harder. I have noticed not only that they are practically constant now, but that the way the totals move seem, well, suspicious. They always make their goal, but at about 3/4 of the way, things kind of stall out and then, miraculously jump by several percentage points and keep going from there.

Then where would you go to find a group of like-minded people, standing for the values and principles of conservatism, spreading the word about those who would tear down our way of life, and just plain having fun?

Free Republic doesn’t have the financing of some billionaire, hidden in the background. Free Republic is “grass roots” all the way. We’re not looking for 10 donors with $10,000 each, but we sure could use 10,000 donors with $10 each. The dollar amount may be the same, but the difference is in how we get there.

WE NEED YOU! Anything you can give is so greatly appreciated. If you can become a monthly donor, that is fabulous. If five dollars is what you can manage, bring it! Your on-going support is crucial, and our thanks to you are immeasurable.

Stylistically, I think it would be cool if they could render Tubman in a style in keeping with the engraving-like portraits of the current bills: it bit less photorealistic, a bit more evocative of printing with etched plates.

And my reasoning is that in addition to the aesthetic continuity, it would signify that she belongs alongside the other figures as a figure that merits equivalent standing in representing something vital about our nation. It’s easy to create a mythic founding at one point in time, with mythic founders, but the intent of this nation when founded—and how it has operated—is that we concede the need for new ideas and new people. We re-found ourselves regularly; we re-visit and overturn old ideas.

I’ve never done an in-depth study of the site, but I gather originally the money was meant to support “actions” but after one or two of those (which largely seemed to be buying the man a motorhome so he could go hang out at the border in comfort,) it has moved on to supporting Robinson and his family as they engage in the arduous work of occasionally purging users.

We should have rotating portraits. Give the $20 to heroic women, the $5 to heroic men, and the $10 to figures of the arts and sciences. Just some quick thoughts off the top of my head…

$5 -
Abe Lincoln
Robert Smalls
Teddy Roosevelt (maybe, he was interesting in some ways but a complete dick in others… better than a genocidal slave owner though? Maybe?)

$20 -
Harriet Tubman
Jane Addams
Amelia Earhart

$10 -
Margaret Hamilton
Carl Sagan
Norman Borlaug

According to Wikipedia, the first one came out the year before I was born.

On top of that, I’m not a movie person at all. mr. klys has standing permission to go see whatever movies he wants to without me because I am very particular about what I want to see, and that tends to be a very limited number of films a year. Currently at 1 for this year and that’s because I didn’t see Star Wars until January.

I love movies but the theater experience these days is ghastly. I feel like I’m sitting in a shoe box with an enormous screen right in my face - 10 foot nostrils do not thrill me - and deafening sound that literally hurts. Add to that the fact that they will not pause the movie for pee breaks. I enjoy watching movies at home so much more.

The Older Boy’s Girlfriend has difficulty following our conversations at times because we often speak in movie references, and her parents didn’t let her go to movies, or even cartoons - which makes it kind of ironic that she’s pursuing a career in animation.

My pop culture knowledge is terrifyingly specific and full of holes. I know a reasonable amount about films I’ve never seen because of conversation/the Internet, but there’s a lot that can still trip me up.

On the other hand, while in line for Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney on Saturday, we ended up getting sucked into one of those guessing games people play on phones, and the kid wanted to do a Star Wars segment. I was giving him clues, and trying to get him to guess “Kessel Run.”

The obvious clue is that the Millenium Falcon can do it in less than 12 parsecs.

The actual picture used on the bill will probably be tweaked over and over before actual printing, and even afterwards, with new series. If one has been paying attention, the looks of Washington, Lincoln, Hamilton and Jackson has changed over the last half century.

Jackson was put on the bill to replace Cleveland. He was a recent add as far as currency goes. And all the bills have gotten redesigns to reduce counterfeiting.

One of the notions being studied by the Treasury is the elimination of the $100, since that makes it easier to transport large amounts of currency. Having to lug around that quantity in $20s would be far more easier to spot.

Not going to happen. The gaming industry for one would fight this tooth and nail. Can you imagine the hassle it would be be to pay a $10K JP in $20.00 bills (500 bills). Paying in $50.00 bills would take 200 . Paying in $100.00 bills, well, 100 of them.

The Casino I work at will offer to cut a check for any JP over $5K. Under that we pay in cash unless otherwise requested. Why? Two reasons. People want their money in cash and it generates excitement to see someone being paid for a large JP.

That’s why you need an under-18 year old. Too young to get into a Sacha Baron Cohen movie.

WHAT?!?

It’s a movie where three brothers are separated at an early age, and each is raised to be, respectively, Hindu, Muslim, and Catholic. There are about five intersecting subplots (gangsters! Diwali miracles!), plus musical numbers. And the happy ending where they turn out not to be orphans, and each has a religion appropriate hot wife lined up.

And a wedding; this is the era where [(n = weddings per film) >= 2]

Technically there’s a message about religious plurality and tolerance, but the draw here is massive, joyful cheesy melodrama. And Amitabh Bacchan—that would be the gentleman coming out of the Easter egg— who is synonymous with delightful hamming it up.

To be fair, even though it maybe wasn’t, it worked out well. We got Obama and then (probably) Hillary. If they’d run in the reverse order, I’m not sure that would have come off.

Oh, I agree absolutely. Like I said, I supported Obama in 2008.

Just something that I noted at the time, as an observation on the general electorate.

Cops: Man Charged With Felony for Filling McDonald’s Water Cup With Soda

Felony charges are in this case appropriate.

Police say the group’s car reversed into the McDonald’s manager, who was then hit by the car a second time when he reached through the window to try to pull the keys from the ignition.

Petty theft is one thing. Using the car as weapon, not once, but twice is more than enough to warrant the felony charges.

And with this, I am calling it a night.

Sleep well Lizards.

re: #23 S’latch

Good.

Jackson was a criminal.

Tubman an American hero heroine.

Jackson was one of the most contradictory public figures of the early Republic. I resist the notion of judging him by modern standards of race etc since that kind of centric thinking tends to criminalize nearly everybody. (what! You say the Founding Fathers were not friendly to GLBT people? Really????)

All the same, he was a brutal opponent to native Americans, ignored court rulings he did not like while he was in office and sparked a war with his illegal incursion into Florida against the Seminoles. He ended up being responsible for massive land grabs against native Americans that had consequence up to the present day.

He was also physically courageous in war, tactically brilliant on the battlefield and probably saved the US from Civil War a generation early when he stared down South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis.

He was the sort of man who could wipe out much of the Creek nation, and then upon seeing a crying orphan on the battlefield be moved to adopt the child into his household.

I have never been able to really grasp the man.

We should have rotating portraits. Give the $20 to heroic women, the $5 to heroic men, and the $10 to figures of the arts and sciences. Just some quick thoughts off the top of my head…

$5 -
Abe Lincoln
Robert Smalls
Teddy Roosevelt (maybe, he was interesting in some ways but a complete dick in others… better than a genocidal slave owner though? Maybe?)

$20 -
Harriet Tubman
Jane Addams
Amelia Earhart

$10 -
Margaret Hamilton
Carl Sagan
Norman Borlaug

The Brits have us beat all to hell in that “arts and sciences” category. Their currency portraits include Austen, Darwin, Dickens, Newton, Shakespeare…
