In Which National Review Columnist Kevin D. Williamson Falsely Accuses Me of “Fabrications”

National Review columnist Kevin D. Williamson

In a recent article for National Review attempting to defend his grotesque statements about working class whites and attacking Donald Trump supporters (which I would normally be wholeheartedly in favor of, except this is National Review and they’re every bit as bad as Donald Trump but in slightly different ways), Kevin D. Williamson comes out of left field with an attack on … well, yours truly.

He begins by ripping Breitbart “News” as a “pseudojournalism site” (which, again, I’d normally agree with, but his only real objection to them is that they’re pro-Trump and that offends his upper class conservative sensibilities), and then suddenly out of nowhere accuses me of “fabrications.”

I don’t give the furry crack of a rat’s behind what the people at Breitbart think about anything, if indeed they can be said to think at all. I don’t even much care what they write about me, and would care still less if the world were less credulous. (I’ve had congressional staffers ask me, straight-facedly, about fabrications from Little Green Footballs.) They’re a stain on the name and memory of Andrew Breitbart, who had Trump’s number long ago and saw him for the impostor he is.

Since I’ve only written a few articles about Williamson and his repellent beliefs, and since he mentions that “congressional staffers” asked him about something written at LGF, it’s pretty clear which piece he’s referring to. By far the most popular LGF article about Williamson, and the one most likely to have been read by congressional staffers, is the one in which I called him out for his truly awful statements about women who have abortions: National Review’s Kevin D. Williamson: Women Who Have Abortions Should Be Hanged, and So Should Doctors.

This article was shared on social media nearly 6,000 times. And that title, dear readers, is 100% accurate, because this is exactly what Williamson said on Twitter in September 2014.

Attorney Isaac Levy was having a discussion with NRO writer Charles Cooke, and asked him whether women who have abortions should get life sentences without parole, because Cooke had written one of those standard right wing articles equating abortion with first degree murder.

Williamson’s response — “I have hanging more in mind” — astounded me at the time, because you don’t very often hear conservatives come right out and say things like this. When I tweeted a link to his statement, he replied and made it clear this is precisely what he believes:

And after a few more exchanges, I asked him directly whether doctors and hospital staff should also be charged with murder. His response:

OK, so there you have it. He expressed these horrible inhuman opinions very clearly, and responded directly to questions, defending his opinions at every step.

In what way did I “fabricate” any of this?

I’d ask Kevin Williamson directly about his false accusation, but at some point after the exchanges above he blocked me on Twitter. I’d demand a retraction of this false slur, but I know that’s not how conservatives roll.

So instead I’m posting this new article about Williamson’s clearly stated belief that women who have abortions should be hanged, to point out how sleazy and dishonest this guy is.

And for the record, I saved screenshots of the tweets above, in case he now tries to delete them.

Reminds me of Newt Gingrich going on Fox News in the last election and saying that he reserved the right to deny something we clearly heard him say. These are the same people who would outlaw abortion under all circumstances, including rape and incest. They don’t care about the consequences, or the health of the women. Only that women be forced to carry to term.

After that, these same women and their newborn children are left to their own devices. Screw them as the GOP pushes to eliminate the safety net. Screw the GOP moves to deny health care access to women.

Screw the GOP as they push cuts for birth control, reproductive health, and even deny funding for Zika without cutting funding from equally important Ebola research. The GOP simply can’t understand that government’s role to promote and protect the general welfare. They are only interested in redistributing the wealth to the rich and the burdens to everyone else. In the end, they screw everyone, but the rich stay rich.

I was in trial once and asked if the witness had ever testified differently than she was testifying today. She said no. I played the tape where she testified completely differently. I asked her again if she had testified differently. She said no again. It wasn’t a lawyer trick. It was a very obvious lie. I have never really understood it. People can really believe a lie that they’ve told themselves even when you show it to them on videotape.

I hate to badger but I really do not get what it is about NRO that inspires such defense of you. They clearly have contempt for Charles and what Charles stands for. And I’ll say this again loudly, NRO does not give two shits about you, they only care about the conservative movement and polishing up that turd through taux intellectual crap. Really dude, open your eyes, these people suck. It’s not just Williamson. It started with Buckley and it’s not going to change.

This is the same mindset that has Sam Brownback in his current budgetary predicament. Even though revenue is way down in the state, he’s still refusing to agree to rescind the huge tax cuts he enacted, the very tax cuts that caused the state’s structural deficit. The Kansas City Star noted this week that some republicans in the state legislature are fed up with him and are saying out loud that he created this mess, and it’s up to him to solve it. Yes, yes, he did, but they are not acknowledging that they were with him every step of the way. Now that the state is facing another round of forced budget cuts that most impact the poor and middle class in the state, they’re talking about leaving him to fix the budget on his lonesome. Today, the Kansas City Star Editorial Board called Brownback a coward because he was too chicken to face the public when it was announced that he’ll again have problems balancing the budget. Brownback is not backing down. He has said he plans to keep the tax cuts in place. If Arthur Laffer ever had a puppet, it’s Sam Brownback.

Seriously, that was awesome. I’ve never seen it articulated so well. Let me add another thing about NR and I’ll bring up Jonah Goldberg here. Jonah has written a book that likens my, your, and many of our fellow lizards ideology to fascism. He outright equated our ideology and let me add as a student of history, of the left and right, the left stood far more against fascism than conservatism did since many conservatives and DF has even admitted this before sympathized with fascism due to their fears of communism. I just don’t know how someone can continue to defend such a publication. And I mean it, NR doesn’t give a fuck about DF. Their only mission is protecting movement conservatism and trying to polish the shit they’ve been spewing since the 50’s.

The mistake made time again is thinking that establishment conservatives like NRO, Reagan, McConnell, McCain, etc share little or no guilt in the creation of things like the TP, people like Limbaugh, Breitbart, and now Trump. I think Ghost already said it better than I could but I love how he describes the two sides of the right wing movement’s coin being pretty much the same thing and how they feed off each other.

Their bottom line is protecting movement conservatism by duping others into supporting their opulent lifestyles. Most of Carson’s campaign was based on grifting. They know that if they can rile some people up emotionally, they can get them to forget about thinking logically and persuade them to open their pocketbooks and send them some of their hard-earned cash. Limbaugh uses his program to convince less fortunate Americans to support policies that protect his wealth and so do those who appear on Fox regularly. Look at what happened to that right-winger last year who lost his health insurance, tried to get Obamacare, and was denied coverage because those he’d voted into office refused to expand Medicaid. Dude was very pissed and blamed the president because he didn’t qualify for Medicaid in his state. He went begging on GoFundMe and quickly found that most who donated money for his medical expenses were, GASP! Democrats and liberals. I donated to his fund and left a message that it would be wise if he’d stop listening to those on the right who had convinced him that liberals/democrats are evil. I didn’t read one comment from a right-winger on the site. Not one. They respond well to bigoted bakers who refuse to bake cakes for LGBTQ Americans, but don’t ask them to help someone who needs funding for medical expenses.

Here’s where things get real squirrelly real quick - if ANYONE in his inner circle knew he was using, CVS in Minnesosa sells Narcan over the counter, and they should have had a few on hand with them for precisely this reason.

Sad to say the autopsy and toxicology results will probably tell us a side of Prince’s story that was probably being left out of his upcoming biography that was s supposed to be published in 2017.

Limbaugh uses his program to convince less fortunate Americans to support policies that protect his wealth and so do those who appear on Fox regularly. Look at what happened to that right-winger last year who lost his health insurance, tried to get Obamacare, and was denied coverage because those he’d voted into office refused to expand Medicaid. Dude was very pissed and blamed the president because he didn’t qualify for Medicaid in his state. He went begging on GoFundMe and quickly found that most who donated money for his medical expenses were, GASP! Democrats and liberals. I donated to his fund and left a message that it would be wise if he’d stop listening to those on the right who had convinced him that liberals/democrats are evil. I didn’t read one comment from a right-winger on the site. Not one. They respond well to bigoted bakers who refuse to bake cakes for LGBTQ Americans, but don’t ask them to help someone who needs funding for medical expenses.

I’ve snacked on dry cheerios when I’ve been in that position before. I treat each cheerio like it’s a potato chip, only eating one at a time, maybe an eighth of a cup tops. Of course they’re nothing but carbs, but it beats nibbling away at bag of chips.

It’s easy to gloat and enjoy his characterful delivery, too, but he really hits on some deep, dark truths. Sippy cups with Mountain Dew, whipping kids with coat hangars, dad just wanting to beat on “something different” - he’s not exaggerating for effect.

I do have one contention with him though, about his assertion that child molesters don’t attack kids in bathrooms with dad waiting outside. I remember a couple of cases in the last ten years where that exactly happened. I believe one little boy was actually murdered in the public bathroom at a rest stop or a camp site. It made national news because it was so rare and nightmarish, but it happened more than once, too.

Other than that, he’s said more truth in 90 seconds than the average Republican politician says in years.

You know when the Tea Party first got going there were some far left members. I think one of the original Tea Party groups may have even been founded by a far left liberal.

Once many of the groups were ‘astro-turfed’ by money from Republican groups and became more and more taken over and labeled as far right the leftist members probably just gave up.

But Bernie may have resuscitated them into another grouping and they may be the ones using him to rally to some of their original Tea Party thinking. Add in other independent types and they may play a large roll in the Berner Base.

Admittedly I’m basing this on a very limited knowledge of the man, however:

I find that really hard to believe. From what I’ve heard about his work ethic, his religious attitudes, and the top-down, highly private way he ran his estate, drugs just sound really freaking unlikely, unless his staff and helpers were complicit in getting him drugs. Did he have a Dr. Feelgood? How long did he have a problem? If he was using, he was hiding it well, IMO.

Addiction is a bitch, but he just never came across as wanting to mess with anything that put him out of control in any way, unless he was experimenting and things got out of control.

Edit: I am not one to think wishfully. If toxicology comes back showing he was loaded up on Heroin, I’ll change how I think of him. But right now, this sounds like gossip.

I just looked up the set list when I saw him (UC San Diego, 1997)

One thing we remember - I called my old concert friend who lives in Boston now when I heard - Prince was going against ticketmaster or something. Our tickets had to be legit & were checked intensely. The line to get in the venue was insane.

It was a great show, of course.

I tend to think this may be the case if it was indeed drug related. IF.

Who knows, maybe he was growing depressed with getting older or thinking he wasn’t being as creative as he would like and got into some experimentation looking for that kick or edge. And who knows if some experimentation grew out of control too fast.

I hope it is not the case. Too many times a great artist falls to something like drugs and then people use it to downgrade their life’s work. I’d hate that to happen to him.

He could have been clean up until a few weeks ago.

He also was human. And we are all frail.

Medical examiners are investigating the cause of the 57-year-old legendary musician’s Thursday death at his Minnesota estate. But doctors in Moline, Ill., only 48 minutes from his home, gave Prince a so-called “save shot” during the emergency stop last Friday, TMZ reported.

Representatives for Prince attributed the stop to a flu, and he left the hospital hours later, over objections from hospital staff, who wanted him to stay for a full 24 hours, according to TMZ.

Sources told the gossip site Prince was “not doing well” when he left the hospital. He had wowed fans in two shows at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre only hours before the flight.

The “save shots” usually help combat opiates, such as heroin and narcotic painkillers, in the bloodstream. Doctors and paramedics have used the injectable medication, called naloxone, for years, according to WebMD.

Police said emergency personnel pronounced the seven-time Grammy winner dead at 10:03 a.m. Thursday inside his Chanhassen, Minn., recording studio. They had tried to revive him for about 20 minutes at the time.

A 911 call unearthed by TMZ earlier in the day revealed that a witness at Paisley Park, Prince’s suburban Minneapolis home, believed him dead even before the first responders arrived.

“Um, we’re at Prince’s house,” the man said. “So, yeah, um, the person is dead here.”

So last week I busted my ass and did a massive, detailed report on the ad campaigns that one of our clients is running. I showed them how they were wasting money by spending money long after their ads ceased to be effective and that their strategy was terrible. I even included detailed figures showing how much they would’ve saved if they’d cut off their ads when it became obvious they’d lost steam. The VP and the COO of the company both read over it before I sent it and signed off on it.

Today I found out I have to do another report before the conference call we have with said client tomorrow afternoon. Half the ads this week are new. The other half are the same fucking ads I told them to stop running because they were wasting a lot of money on them.

I am highly unmotivated to do this work but it has to get done. Blargh.

I have frequently seen conservative Republicans with no sense of irony use what the parties were 100+ years ago to tell Democrats and liberals they can’t criticize the Republican party on civil rights. What constructive things has the Republican party done for African-Americans since President Eisenhower left office? I won’t say LBJ was enlightened on race but he was far more forward thinking and acting as a president than any of his Republican successors were. That’s the thing though. As the Democratic party has become the party of civil rights, the Republican Party has less and less resembled the party of Lincoln.

They think the Democratic party and liberals hurt minorities more by giving them “handouts” that keep them dependent to trick them into continuing to vote for the Democrats. Nothing can penetrate that ignorance.
