“Growing up I never, ever had someone talk to me about consent and its importance. I even had sex ED in school!” he added. “This shit is important ya’ll.”

When a commenter linked to the post and wrote, “It is the parents’ duty to have ‘the talk’ with their kids, not a government funded organization that murders babies,” — Damien slapped him back.

“First of all f*cktruck: I am not a government employee. My wages are not paid by the government,” He replied. “Second: zero babies have ever been murdered in a planned parenthood. I didn’t say a god damn word about abortion but you had to get your f*cking tighty whiteys in a bunch because an organization that you know nothing about is doing good things for millions of people and you hate it. Shut your face up about shit you don’t understand you f*cking dump truck.”

And if parents choose not to talk to their sons about consent and its importance… then I got zero objection to some government-funded organization doing it for them. Partly to keep the guy from getting himself dragged into a courtroom, but mostly for the benefit of every non-consenting neighbor, classmate, etc who’d be better off if *somebody* had made sure the guy understood.

More if you don’t think Bernie is the best thing since sliced bread, you’re not a real progressive. I like a lot of what Bernie stands for but like many voters I have seen nothing that makes me think he would be an effective president. If that makes me a hypocrite so be it, I’d rather want an effective moderately liberal president than a progressive one who barely gets anything accomplished since he doesn’t understand the complex realities of being president.

If I had time to write them, it would go something like “Oh, boo hoo, millions of Democrats decided they like Clinton better than Sanders, and your response is to say they’re not progressive enough? You don’t get to define progressive, and you certainly don’t get to tell millions of people how to think.”

Yes? And?

The Democratic Party is a coalition that INCLUDES progressives. But it is not made entirely of progressives.

You can fairly critique previous actions of the party for not paying enough attention to the progressive wing. But you cannot remedy that by ignoring the more conservative part of the party; Democrats also include those who are not quite as progressive, and their viewpoint has to be included.

Just love how folks claim that they should have the right to discriminate because of their religious beliefs. Defending the various RFRAs that condone bigotry because of your beliefs.

Picking and choosing from the Bible is exactly what they are doing. Ignoring the bits about loving thy neighbor, or leaving it to God to Judge on one’s sins.

Oh, and which bible are they using? The Old Testament? New? Which version? Because sure as heck, they’re picking and choosing what stuff is important and what isn’t.

These folks are pathological in their hate. It blinds them, and they justify it with religious “belief”.

As Kragar pointed out - there’s plenty of Christian and other religious denomination groups that use the Bible as a foundation document and welcome LBGTs.

Bernie has run his course: The Sanders campaign has stopped being about winning and is now mostly about whining

27
Nyet  Apr 22, 2016 • 12:48:22pm

re: #26 Nyet

To summarize: You have to be a registered member of a party in order to vote in their primary. To many people who had, right up until last weekend, never even given this fact a moment’s thought, this became a grave injustice because, it turns out, they registered as independents and not Democrats and had no chance of voting in the primary. The outrage poured out and the rhetoric about “voter suppression” abounded.

This wasn’t just some social media fancy, however. Sanders was happily stoking this nonsense. ABC News ran a video of Sanders and some bearded white guy in New York chattering about how much a bummer it is that non-Democrats can’t vote in the Democratic primary, with Sanders intoning dramatically about how independent voters ” have lost their right to vote”. Which is blooey nonsense, since political parties are private organizations that your are free to join if you want, and these voters just chose not to.

Fuck Bernie. Srsly.

That and Primary elections are put on by the parties. They aren’t in the constitution, and exist only because of the parties, for the parties.

They are under no legal obligation that I know of to nominate the winners either. So whining about 90% of what they are is asinine and no one who’s involved and paying attention gives a shit.

I liked the article that Sergey linked to pointing out that Bernie’s argument about the reason why he’s losing in the South because those states are more conservative is utter crap. Bernie flat out cannot compete in states that have some diversity to them. And all the condescending crap in the world about how African-Americans, Hispanics, and others are voting against their interests won’t change that fact at all. It’s exactly why I am glad he won’t be the left’s standard bearer. Anyone who hopes to lead the Democratic party must be aware and do well with its very culturally diverse base and it’s clear that Bernie doesn’t value that base judging by his comments.

71
HappyWarrior  Apr 22, 2016 • 2:05:31pm

AND IT MUST CHANGE!!!

There’s a good example of this going on in PA. In Philadelphia, the mayor is proposing a soft drink tax to fund the school district. Clinton supports this. Bernie insists that this puts the burden of the expense on the poorest people, a point which is not in dispute. Bernie argues that the marketers of the drinks should have to pay their fair share. (How that cost is not passed onto the customers any differently than the soda tax seems to slip away) However, in Philadelphia, there is no other option. You see, the way government actually works, the City of Philadelphia can’t get any more money from the Republican state legislature so it has to raise its own somehow.

Wouldn’t that still have the same problem as the glasses?

(Full disclosure, I just don’t wear my glasses when walking outside. My eyes aren’t so bad that I can’t get away with that yet. (I think all the negatives work out correctly there.))

They’re most useful for wind and snow. Just a bit better than glasses alone in the rain. Mostly I rely on my cap-brim to keep the rain off the glasses.

If one complains about rain here, one is spotted as a non-native.

I did give the guy out running a thumbs up.

Only other person I saw out exercising despite the rain. (Normally that particular path is pretty busy.)

I had my hood on because I was worried about how my Bluetooth headset would handle the rain. The rest of what I wore is getting washed this evening so I didn’t really care so much about that.

and more on the Ohio shooting.
jeebus…

The original reports had seven people dead on a rural, Pike County road. Then the scene was three different locations, then there was an eighth person, then a fourth location. Finally, at the press conference it was learned the victims were all executed with shots to the head. Some of the victims were killed in their beds early Friday morning. One woman was killed with a newborn baby lying right next to her.

The situation is still evolving. Officials do not know what the situation is in regards to the shooter or shooters. It is believed that they may be on the loose and both the Attorney General and the Pike County Sheriff said the people in surrounding areas should exercise caution, lock doors and be on high alert.

Officials are expected to be on the scene all night and into Saturday. It appears the killer(s) went from house to house targeting the same family.

I’m still perplexed by the idea that a transgender person (who is has a penis) would be forced to use a restroom in which they are most likely to be raped?

Little girls don’t go to the restroom alone in public places and if they do their parents or guardians should be throttled.

I’ve yet to hear any statistics that show transgender individuals are more likely to commit sex crimes or indeed have been arrested for committing any sex crimes.

It seems they would be the most healthy of individuals having had to face many truths many of us never do.

So it is kind of quiet, per the normal Friday afternoon, and so I am going to go OT. It’s getting to the point of the year that gardening can start. What do various Lizards have going in their gardens?

I am mostly restricted to container gardening, due to how the backyard is set up, and so I have 5 pots going: a huge one with cucumbers that I am hoping to convince to grow up, plus basil and cilantro that goodness knows how well they will catch. Then two pots with tomatoes (one cherry, one regular), one pot with yellow bell peppers, and one pot with jalapenos. All seedlings from Home Depot, because I am not coordinated enough to plan in advance.

I would love to do some raised bed work and have more than one of each plant. It is on the list for “next house.”

To respond to your question, we have raspberry plants. They’ve practically taken over our garden; they grow like gangbusters up here. From the article—she’s a school board trustee, but apparently has poor spelling & grammar skills. Emphasis mine:

The posts include one where she said Muslims should “stay in your desserts[sic] and follow your religion in your own countries. ” In another, Gryskiewicz states “we cannot allow Islam to take over,” and in another writes: “Why now are we giving into[sic] the Muslims [sic—they missed one—this is possessive and should have an apostrophe] way of life? The French told them to get lost. This is what our President should be emulating.”

The comments were posted to Facebook in January and February. Screenshots of the posts, which her attorney confirmed she wrote, were made public last month. Gryskiewicz has denied writing other, older posts obtained by The Record, including one from November 2015 that calls President Obama a “Muslim lover” and states it is “time to take action.” […]

I like fresh raspberries.

There’s something really satisfying about growing your own fruits and veggies, and I wish I had better space to work with. And/or better set aside the time to work on it. At this point, I’d be willing to, but most of that stuff is less portable, so I just stick with my container gardening for now.

Hey all. I just wanted to put this here.

I’m finally sitting in my hotel room in Austin for the second of three Umphrey’s McGee shows. What a nightmare that drive is, from the Red River all the way to where I sit. First of all, near the TX/OK border some semi truck tire exploded right next to me. Scared. The. Shit. Out. Of. Me. Second, drivers on this highway are insane - bobbing in and out of traffic (ever hear of a turn signal?) at 20 or over m/ph over the posted speed limit - and this is seemingly everybody on the highway except me. Third, what the fuck is going on north of Ft. Worth and in and around Temple? Looks like they’re building a very big thing for autos to drive on in Ft. Worth. In Temple the highway looks like a bomb exploded, not road construction. And don’t even get me started on rush hour traffic on a Friday evening in Austin. How do y’all do it?!?

With that said, I had a wonderful time in Tulsa last night. Though I didn’t know anybody there I was able to make some friends nonetheless. The band played When Doves Cry in remembrance of Prince. And at the end of the night this happened:

The berries very seldom make it into the house — mostly just nibbled straight from the stem, at least when we can beat the birds and the bunnies to the harvest.

re: #11 gwangung

Yes?

I’d also say that “progressive” is not a monolithic definition and Berners don’t really get to be the final word on who’s in and who’s out. I definitely consider myself a progressive, but differ in many ways from the more vocal Berners about how to achieve progressive goals. Matter of fact, being told I’m not a true progressive pisses me off more than most of the true believer bullshit. (It’s equally as offensive as being painted as a low-information conservative whose vote doesn’t really count because I’m in South Carolina.)

I’m still limited to the boxes on the window sills - and indoor gardening at that. Rosemary, dill, thyme, sage, parsley, catnip, basil, and trying to get more basil and some cilantro going.

When he loses the general it will be by an overwhelming popular vote margin. They ain’t gonna do a thing but bitch for a week and then pivot to claiming he was never a “true conservative” and that’s why he lost. That’s the magic of modern conservatism as an ideology, it’s protean and fluid in a way that renders its adherents utterly incapable of introspection. As far as the collective Republican subconscious is concerned he’s always been an intentionally disposable candidate. The establishment hates him but even his strongest supporters will only care about him until he loses resoundingly, then they’ll tear him apart and start looking for a new führer.

I just saw this lovely proposal over at DailyKos, with reference to the Oklahoma bill presently before the governor that would pull the license of any doctor that performs an abortion.

What we need is a law or Constitutional amendment whereby a court can rule a statute to be not just unconstitutional, but “egregiously unconstitutional,” meaning that anyone with a high school education should recognize that it is unconstitutional. The result of such a ruling is that the legislators who voted for the law, and the governor who signed it, have to reimburse their state the full cost of the litigation over the law, from their own salaries.

In other words, if they want to use legislation as a form of activism to change a precedent, they have to put their own money on the line to do it.

This x1000. RWNJ douchebags engaging in endless Roe v. Wade legal theater can damn well pay for it personally.

They seem to really believe that BS and circulate it among like-minded individuals who are either as ignorant as they are or lack the courage to tell them to knock that sh*t off. It’s only when the wider world/society is made aware of their thoughts and rejects them that they really learn how truly stupid and small-minded they are. Curt Shilling felt absolutely fine posting ugly mess on his Facebook wall about NC’s anti-LGBTQ bathroom law even though ESPN had a policy against such behavior. Now he’s all butthurt that he was canned. Personally, I don’t think ESPN management should have had to put up with one second of his divisive behavior. After he compared Muslims to Nazis, he should be been gone. He went to some right-wing radio show today to allege that he’s not homophobic. His behavior shows otherwise. He’s not only homophobic, he’s Islamophobic and has a sense of innate entitlement that he appears to use to excuse behavior that I believe most of us reject with a passion. I know I do. After experiencing life under Jim Crow, I know exactly how members of the groups these tools target feel, and it ain’t good.

re: #225 bratwurst

On one hand, we cannot be surprised at all by the outrage over the concept of putting a black woman on US currency.

On the other hand, I guess I was not fully prepared for the way 7 years of a black POTUS and the whole Trump phenomenon has led to absolutely disgusting outbursts of utterly unvarnished racism. It’s absolutely vile.

I saw in the local paper today that a Kentucky State University professor debated Jared Taylor. Bad move; slime like Taylor should not be dignified by giving them a forum to spew their bile.

re: #234 The Ghost of a Flea

Perhaps I’m quaint in a Pepperridge Farms, rocking-chair-on-the-porch way, but back in my day, “jackass” and “fuckwit” were sufficient.

GET OFF MY LEXICOLOGICAL LAWN

Mark Twain was sufficient.
