Trump Supporters Send Threatening Antisemitic Messages to Journalist Who Profiled Melania

Making America hate again
Media • Views: 68,001

Journalist Julia Ioffe wrote a profile of Melania Trump for GQ Magazine that was actually pretty sympathetic; but Melania didn’t like it. So she took to Facebook and posted a message bashing Ioffe by name.

Donald Trump’s knuckle-dragging followers got the hint.

On Wednesday, GQ published a profile of Melania Trump penned by the journalist Julia Ioffe. Since then, Ioffe has been harassed by Trump supporters sending her anti-Semitic threats like photoshopped images of her wearing a Jude star, and others referencing the Holocaust.

Soon after it was published, Melania Trump released a statement on Facebook expressing her displeasure over the piece. “The article published in GQ today is yet another example of the dishonest media and their disingenuous reporting,” she wrote, adding, “Julia Ioffe, a journalist who is looking to make a name for herself, clearly had an agenda when going after my family.”

Trump supporters were quick to respond, and Ioffe quickly started receiving hateful messages and threatening calls…

Here are a few of Ioffe’s tweets with examples of the kind of vile threats and hatred she received, hidden by default because they’re horrific.

Ioffe told the Guardian on Thursday that she found the messages extremely disturbing. “I started the day off having a sense of humor about it,” she said, “but by the end of the day, after a few phone calls… with people playing Hitler speeches, and the imagery, and people telling me my face would look good on a lampshade, it’s hard to laugh.”

[…]

For Ioffe, the attacks signify that a Trump presidency would be dangerous for members of the press. “This is not a heavily critical article. There is nothing in it that is untrue,” Ioffe told the Guardian of her piece, adding, “If this is how Trump supporters swing into action what happens when the press looks into corrupt dealings, for example, or is critical of his policies?”

Hey Jennifer Rubin, Bill Kristol, John Podhoretz, Charles Krauthammer, etc. How do you like the Republican base that you egged on for years and thought you could control?

Some of us saw this coming. Of course, some of us saw Iraq exploding into sectarian bloodshed after Saddam Hussein was deposed, while you said Iraqis would greet us with flowers. Foresight ain’t your strong suit.

Trump’s campaign thrives on hate and bigotry. We’ve seen it from day 1. No one seems to care that he’s completely and spectacularly unqualified for the position he seeks, and anyone digging into his background who reveals even the slightest bit of information that is unflattering is attacked.

And if you happen to be Jewish and his goon squad of followers catch wind? They’ll smear their anti-Semitic fecal droppings all over your time-stream, make threats, and otherwise reveal the true face of Trump’s backers/supporters.

Trump unleashed all this with his nonstop xenophobia, Islamophobia, and quote-tweeting white supremacists favorably. These are the folks that make up the core of the GOP voting base. That keyed them off to knowing it’d be acceptable to step up their hate. Instead of the media taking this head-on, they’ve collectively buried their head in the sand.

America first? Yeah, that’s the trigger words for isolationists, fascists, and white supremacists. Forget dog whistles. He’s sounding air horns at 120db.

The GOP voting base - that is why there isn’t as much navel gazing and self-reflection as there should be when someone who is so patently incompetent to hold elected office is running away with the nomination for the GOP to run for president of the United States. His opponents have refused to tackle his bigotry head-on because they needed his votes. They can’t go after him now because they’d still need his delegates (and the votes have shown that they’re perfectly fine with the bigotry).

So, it’s no longer up to the GOP to clean up their house. Everyone else will have to do it for them, and the media has to be held accountable for their part as well stoking fires because it’s good for ratings.

GOTV. That’s the name of the game from now to election day. Make sure you’re registered to vote and have all the necessary paperwork to make sure that you can’t be denied the right to vote because the GOP has pushed to suppress voter turnout with restrictions that don’t actually stop fraud. Make sure you and everyone else you know gets out and votes.

But don’t stop there - make sure you vote in every election to come. Not just presidential elections, but midyears, off-years, and even school boards, because they all matter - and it’s going to take time to roll back the GOP onslaught.

It’s going to be very hard for the Drumpfskind to not be nominated, given the past two election Tuesdays.

Over at The Regurgitant, Son of Erick is still pining away for Cruz, but it’s pretty clear by now that this is just a business model for that crowd, a way to sell “true” conservatism for their marks.

I don’t know how Drumpfskind will do in a general election. I really don’t. I fear I am now too old and isolated from too much of the population to get a feel for what people are really going to do. I imagine Drumpfskind will appeal to many Americans who are bearing some sort of grudge for their failures in life.

Also, my generation has Clinton fatigue but I don’t know if the 20-somethings, who did not even exist when Bill got into office, even are aware of how the older generation looks at candidates.

I imagine that Clinton will need to find a younger running mate who can fill in the gaps in public relations to those groups to which she is not strongly appealing. I don’t know how may of the Bernites will even vote come November, but I imagine that Hillary will need them in the “purple” states (Wisconsin, iowa, and the like.)

“Melania didn’t like it”

Too bad.

Does she realize that the longer this goes on ( the run for President ) the more there will be articles like this? And some of them may actually be coming from the RWNJs that would love to upset the GOP convention and see Trump taken down. Many of them are not going to be pretty. Some actually pretty tough…more tough than the GQ article.

I guess she isn’t sharp enough to understand what her husband is saying and doing is called political warfare and the guns will be turned her and hubbies way. Is she even prepared for this run. The lark of being in the spotlight will be over.

Welcome to the Public Life Melania. You won’t be able to hide in your gold-encrusted Trump Tower Penthouse any longer. And you can’t cry and be a touch-me-not.

I have had some contact with some folks up in Cleveland. I have a niece and some friends there. I am hearing the police are fearful they really do not have the manpower and the equipment for all this. They also say they hear that all kinds of various groups are planning to show up in protest.

I am thinking Kasich will soon be planning for the Ohio National Guard to be in place.

re: #69 allegro

I figured it was the boob job.

It was likely both, Ioffe made her look like a ridiculous serial liar. First she claims the half-brother thing is a lie then when confronted with proof claims:

(When I asked Melania about this over the phone, she denied that it was true. Later, after I’d sent her documents from the Slovenian court, she wrote to me claiming she hadn’t understood what I’d asked, explaining, “I’ve known about this for years.” She added: “My father is a private individual. Please respect his privacy.”)

Seriously what the fuck is that? How do you “not understand” that a question about your half-brother pertains to the goddamned half-brother your father abandoned? Her answer regarding plastic surgery was equally mendacious.

Again, Melania scoffs when I ask if she had had a breast augmentation. “I didn’t make any changes,” she says. “A lot of people say I am using all the procedures for my face. I didn’t do anything. I live a healthy life, I take care of my skin and my body. I’m against Botox, I’m against injections; I think it’s damaging your face, damaging your nerves. It’s all me. I will age gracefully, as my mom does.”

I’m sorry but come the fuck on!

This is the poster face for BOTOX abuse.

I get that it’s a really shitty question and that any person should have their privacy respected enough not to have to answer inquiries regarding any procedures they may have undergone, but have the fucking integrity to say that instead of just flagrantly lying. Her husband is running for President on a platform that involves rounding up entire populations and deporting them, invading their homes and ripping them away from their children. So the least she can do is answer a few impertinent questions in a way that doesn’t make her a fucking laughingstock.

Melania’s upset she was asked questions about her looks? It’s unfortunate that people fixate on looks, but that’s the state of media, where they’re more interested in whether she had work done than whether Trump’s actually qualified to be president based on his complete lack of understanding about how government works and what is involved in being president (hint: snapping your fingers will not result in policy x, y, or z changing).

You know what bothers me.

It’s not the way Melania looks.

It’s that her husband is completely unprepared for the office he seeks, and his supporters actually approve of his incompetence and unpreparedness as a trait they’re looking for.

The Ascent of Drumpfskind is, to me, a clear demonstration that the well crafted image of the “conservatives” has mostly been about image.

Many Republicans apparently really don’t care about morality, or even libertarian economic theory.

Drumpfskind himself noted, quiet boastfully, that he’s gotten more Republican primary votes than anybody else in history.

Drumpfskind is the first actually popular person to run for the GOP nomination since Reagan. And like Reagan, it’s mostly an act to con the rubes.

And that is why Son of Erick and his ilk are so angry.

Drumpfskind puts paid to the claim that the “moral majority” is a lie, for both words in the phrase.

So as Drumpfskind ascends, it becomes clear that the religious right are well past their peak in power.

That’s why some of the brighter, or more opportunistic, religious right leaders glommed onto Drumpfskind so early - they know that the success of their own business will be furthered by riding someone else’s success (in this case Drumpfskind), rather than being consistent to their own “moral” teachings.

I have a modest proposal for Texas secessionists. If they do somehow achieve their independence, they can give their desired social development a huge boost by trading all their writers, artists, scientists, aerospace engineers and other undesirables for everyone else’s creationists and nutbar fundies in general. It can’t be one for one, obviously, since there are so many kooks in the rest of the country, but I think I should be worth a couple of junior pastors and a health supplement sales manager at least.

With the Democratic primary basically over, I want to step back a bit and explain the big-picture reason that I never warmed up to Bernie Sanders. It’s not so much that he’s all that far to my left, nor that he’s been pretty skimpy on details about all the programs he proposes. That’s hardly uncommon in presidential campaigns. Rather, it’s the fact that I think he’s basically running a con, and one with the potential to cause distinct damage to the progressive cause.

But in interviews, Melania doesn’t shy away from her Slovenian life; she’s not embarrassed by it. “I love my childhood,” she tells me. “It was a beautiful childhood.” Her son speaks Slovenian fluently—he uses it to speak with his grandparents, who have immigrated to New York and live near them in Trump Tower—but for Melania, Slovenia represents a relatively short and distant period of her past that she quickly outgrew.

Toddlers Murdering Selves At Alarming Rate, No End To Rampage In Sight

With six gun attacks by toddlers on Americans in the last week, the number of deaths and injuries (five deaths, one injury) caused by armed children now exceeds the number of Americans (four) killed in the terrorist attacks in Brussels. And yet Donald Trump has remained silent on the wave of killings. Shouldn’t he at least announce a ban on toddlers coming into the country until Congress figures out what the hell is going on? The Census Bureau estimates that there were nearly four million births in 2013, so even accounting for attrition as they blow themselves and each other away, that’s surely a much greater threat than the annual 250,000 Muslim migrants to the USA that has Breitbart freaking out.

So the demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic convention—admittedly non-violent, at least on the demonstrators’ parts—reflected badly on Hubert Humphrey.

These protests at Trump events somehow reflect favorably on Trump.

Why is that? Why the opposite effect?

Because in 2016, the target of said demonstrations has made a major point of holding himself ( and by extension, his supporters) up as the Only REAL Americans, anxious to Take Their Country Back and Make It Great Again. And, of course, its corollary: that the “anti” demonstrators are vile Un-American subhumans, worthy only of a vigorous head-bashing by Real Patriots.

Same, more-or-less, as in 1968; except that Hubert Humphrey was way too much of a decent human being to play into the role…

Read this and go-WTF? Slavoj Žižek: ‘Trump is really a centrist liberal’

Depending on who you ask, Slavoj Žižek is either a darling of the international left; “the most dangerous philosopher in the west”; or, in some quarters, a cryptofascist buffoon, whose outspoken - although frequently ironic - stances against political correctness are singled out in particular as a grave threat to the cause, by those ready to disavow him on his own side of politics.

What happens to democracy when the majority is inclined to vote for racist and sexist laws?

That he is one of the most influential and indeed popular public intellectuals in the world seems more or less beyond doubt, though few self-declared Leninists could ever expect to draw sold-out crowds to their public appearances, as was the case at last week’s Guardian Live event at London’s Emmanuel Centre.

But Žižek is not just any self-declared Leninist: the Slovenian philosopher not only incorporates the intellectual rigours of Hegelian dialectics and Lacanian psychoanalysis into his wideranging critique of global capitalism, but also deploys an arsenal of dirty jokes and cultural references high and low to leaven the subject with sometimes outrageous humour - arguably rendering the critique all the more effective.

Toronto-based artist Richard Ahnert (@richardahnert) creates surrealistic visions on birch panels, often depicting the complex relationship between humans and the natural world. “Without [animals], we could never truly understand just how unique we are,” the artist says. Like a musician is instinctually drawn to a particular instrument, Richard’s longtime preferred tool for expression has been a paintbrush. For artists on a quest for their own unique perspective, Richard’s advice is honest and clear: “Create something that you would want hung on your own walls. If it isn’t something that you’d desire had you stumbled upon it in a gallery, then you should be trying harder.”

David McLeod (@david_mcleod) doesn’t need to touch a texture to play with its properties. After studying computer science and graphic design, he taught himself how to use a computer to simulate everything from sand and fur to glossy bubbles. But the real magic comes from the way David casts these textures in hypnotic video loops. “Things are perceived in a different way once they are put into motion,” says the digital artist, who relocated to New York City from Sydney, Australia. “There is also a lot of trial and error involved in getting the right result,” he adds. When tweaking a computer-generated substance, David experiments with scientific properties as well as how our brains respond to the movement of objects that are squishy, plush and everything in between. “Recently I’ve been having fun simulating some stretchy gum-like materials. There’s a bit of a pareidolia effect in play — where for a moment objects or faces seem to appear in the randomized form. It’s a little like looking up at the clouds.”

“I just love how beautiful storms are, and I love to go out and capture their beauty,” award-winning weather photographer Kelly DeLay (@kellydelay) says. After years of marketing and building websites, Kelly changed the path of his career in 2009. Over the next several months, Kelly estimates he will travel at least 15,000 miles (24,140 kilometers) — from south Texas all the way up into Canada — to photograph storms, and he’s not the only brave soul on the road. “If it’s May in Oklahoma, you will get hundreds of people on the same highway trying to get to the same storm,” he says. “That’s sort of the MO of the modern weather photographer: it’s real time storm chasing.” In Kelly’s line of work, there’s plenty of beauty to witness, but occupational hazards certainly exist: “I was with some friends chasing a few years ago, and I looked over and my friend’s hair was standing straight up — the lightening struck 100 yards [91 meters] away,” he says. “If you’re not paying attention, you can definitely get into trouble.”

I read the GQ piece about Melania, and here’s what I got out of it.

She’s not especially talented, but could have been a designer, if she’d been born some other place and time.
She met The Donald as her modeling career had plateaued, given her advanced age of 26 — too old for a runway model or cover girl.
So, maybe she married him for security, because her looks were all she had going.
She maybe had a boob job. Also, some face work done.
She has a half-brother that she’d really rather not talk about.
She’d not much of a party girl, or a social butterfly.
She’d rather not remember the days in Slovenia with her old crowd.
Her father was a “businessman,” with perhaps some hints of a shady past.
While she’s not especially talented, she’s not a dumb bunny.

In short, not a glowing profile, but I could where a coddled, vain woman could take umbrage at some of the suggestions, reading between the lines.
