Monday Evening Awesome: eighth blackbird’s Tiny Desk Concert

Classical music isn’t dead, and it doesn’t even smell funny. It smells great when it’s played by eighth blackbird.

May 2, 2016 by TOM HUIZENGA • The Chicago new-music ensemble eighth blackbird is on a roll. Just after winning its fourth Grammy in February, the group received a MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions; the prize came with a $400,000 grant. Hand Eye — eighth blackbird’s second album in seven months — just came out, and this season the group marks its 20th anniversary. The celebration includes an extensive tour, with world premieres of music by Bryce Dessner and David T. Little, as well as a gig as a “living installation” at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, where eighth blackbird has commandeered the third-floor galleries as a space to rehearse and perform.

It’s an understatement to note that there’s far less space behind Bob Boilen’s desk. But after a few discussions about placement, the sextet squeezed in while making sure everyone could see each other — one of the keys to navigating rhythmically challenging pieces by David Lang, Bryce Dessner and Robert Honstein.

Right out of the gate, we meet the group’s newest member, flutist Nathalie Joachim, who opens the first of two short pieces, “Wave The Sea,” with a scurrying theme of nervous energy. The music is by Bryce Dessner, perhaps best known for his work in The National but increasingly in demand as a classical composer. It’s Dessner’s take on the folk tradition of grisly story-songs collected in his larger suite, Murder Ballades.

“Pulse,” from Robert Honstein’s three-movement Conduit, seems to hover in midair. Throbbing notes from Matthew Duvall’s vibraphone, Yvonne Lam’s violin, Lisa Kaplan’s piano and Michael J. Maccaferri’s clarinet fold in one by one, as if in a round. Joachim’s flute floats above while Nicholas Photinos’ cello secures the bottom end, fleshing out a mesmerizing wash of sound.

David Lang’s “learn to fly,” also from a larger work, pumps up the energy with a motorik beat, fueled by Kaplan’s syncopation. The interlocking parts race on until Lam finally breaks out of the pattern, soaring in a sweepingly romantic solo.

For those who persist in predicting the death of classical music, eighth blackbird once again demonstrates that it remains vibrantly alive.

The group’s new album, Hand Eye, is available now:

(I post long screeds at the worst damn times… copypasta’d from downstairs)

I know it’s awfully early to write the postscript on this general election, but the real striking thing to me has been the appetite for economic protectionism on both sides of the aisle. One-percenty-ness and robber barons have been part of the mainstream political discourse in various terms basically forever, but I grew up thinking of ranting about NAFTA and the like as a real fringe LUAPNOR sort of detail, too nuanced to encapsulate in a soundbite and too complicated to be a sensible battle cry.

Now I have Berniebros yelling TPP TPP TPP in my ear, and Trump’s over here on the other side promising tons and tons of high-wage manufacturing jobs, the former a message I’d consider more traditionally Republican and the latter straight out of the playbook of a union boss. Isolationism hadn’t been politically mainstream since the Depression.

How much of this is a longer-term result of the same demographics losing in economic recoveries over and over and over? How much of Sanders’ rhetoric has actually been rendered mainstream by Trump first broaching similar subjects?

I don’t think think this line of discourse is going away any time soon, and yet it looks like an obviously hopeless path, a complete loser non-starter. Nobody is going to build cheap plastic widgets in your podunk town, because nobody is going to un-invent nearly-free computer-routed modular containerized shipping.

It does look like it is a leading indicator of the manifestation of our broader socioeconomic need to decouple comfortable life from full-time employment, as workers become so destructively productive per-worker that there’s no need for most of them.

And as I said below, hence the need for a universal basic income, to redistribute the enormous wealth being generated by technological innovation from capital to labor.

I’m actually not sure there is a history here, other than a recent (last 20-30 years) history of the lowest-educated, least-skilled workers feeling the weakest recoveries.

That’s part of why it’s scary. We’ve got no built-in societal mechanism to deal with the fundamental concept of post-scarcity labor.

If Bernie wanted me to really feel it, that’s the revolution he’d have tried to stir up.

Definitely, but we’ve really baked in the idea that workers are incentivized to perform by giving them money. I think some folks would still be out there wanting to change the world no matter what effect it had on their station in life, but how much would we have to pay plumbers? Is there a living wage consistent with healthy, safe, comfortable life that allows the kinda crappy jobs to survive at any cost? How hard will the workers who show up actually work? I know I wouldn’t be all that excited to show up at 0730 if my mortgage weren’t riding on it, even though I mostly like my job.

Anyone who says they’re completely confident of the ramifications of the answers to these questions, or probably even the answers themselves, is lying.

I was responding in part about the idea of trade protections coming back into fashion. We have a history on how bad they were, and also, how bad the economic ideas that gave rise to them were.

*Ahem*

Trump is promising tons and tons of manufacturing jobs but he’s not promising high wages. He thinks workers should take a pay cut “in order to stay competitive”

OK. I forced myself to read Andrew Sullivan’s tl;dr essay for New York Magazine.

Not impressed. Oh, OK, slightly impressed at the effort it took to put together this extremely verbose apology for elite rule of popular opinion. But I think he’s hyper-ventilating to a ridiculous degree by suggesting Trump is going to mean the end of America.

If he’s actually elected — which I SERIOUSLY doubt will happen — he’s going to find himself up against an entire governmental system that will refuse to do his fascist bidding, from the Defense Department on down.

Electing Trump may be an extinction event, all right — for the Fox News-indoctrinated debased right wing. Not for America.

Well, it’s pretty clear at this point that the message Trump’s audience receives bears only a passing resemblance to what Trump actually says with his word blocks.

I think if you set the UBI at just around the poverty line, say $1,000 a month, very few people would be satisfied to just live off of that. And if they are, I doubt they contribute much to the economy anyway. A long term experiment is going to be conducted in Kenya by giving thousands of villagers a basic income for 10-15 years, so we’ll see how that goes.

Okay, sure, but if we’re living in a world where we only need six out of ten people to work…

I dunno, it sounds like it would spawn a dog-eat-dog world of wretched working conditions that would be definitely better for those in abject poverty but still a loser for a big chunk of the lower-middle class.

I always preferred a version where one filed a tax forms. If you and/or family end up under the poverty line (however that is defined but considerably higher than currently) you get cut a “refund” check for the difference. Once a year, no strings on how it’s used, just an injection of income. Some will use it wisely, some won’t and most will be a “bit of both”.

I am optimistic that there are lots of creative and service jobs out there which the robots aren’t going to take anytime soon. And as technological innovation continues to increase wealth more, the UBI can be increased to reflect that. More people could work part-time, retire early, take extended parental leave, sabbaticals, etc. Getting wealthier shouldn’t be a problem if we handle it correctly.

That’s why we had the stupid GOP presidential caucus that Rand bought because Kentucky’s constitution says a person’s name can only appear in one place on a ballot.
Rand couldn’t run for president and senate on the same primary ballot.

Ease into it by setting union or governmental penalties on the 40-hr week. (Oddly, my first full-time job in 1962 was a 37.5 hr week. ILGWU shop.)

But that discourages work if working results in a dollar for dollar cut in benefits. Plus it incurs a stigma and encourages rightwing politicians to seek to cut it if its not universal.

I think part of the point is that automation really does discourage work, and not without reason. If robots could plant and pick food and build houses, is there a reason we should have to pay for them (at least until the robots are sentient and deserve the rights others do)? How would you?

Just the words “I’ve always liked him” get you the keys to the inner city. Like the GOP would actually grow a soul. or conscience, or anything resembling humanity. Yeah. If we get to the point that robots can do all the work, then we have essentially achieved a post-capitalist world in which everyone is free to pursue the activities they find to be most fulfilling. Humans need social interaction with other humans, and we will do that through scientific, cultural, athletic, erotic and artistic pursuits.

Our economics are founded on scarcity. Making scarce things more available and delivering them to more people.

The problem is: What happens when scarcity is no longer a thing to worry about? Especially in a society like ours where work is as much a holy ritual as a practical necessity.

When things are not scarce, and few people are working, our economics doesn’t function well at all.

In such a scenario, where millions of people no longer have access to work or products, it’s not at all surprising that demagogues will have plenty of opportunity to stir up shit.

I think we have to plan for it now, which we as a country won’t. We’re way too tied to the idea that our worth is determined by our income which we use how much we work as a crude approximation. If we can’t break those associations, the living conditions for the lower 60% of the country are just going to get worse and worse.

I’d have to say The Industrial Revolution provides a some idea of the direction today’s technological changes will have on society. That revolution destroyed millions of jobs, and lives.

Craftsmen became obsolete and huge amounts of wealth transferred from the middle class and poor to the wealthy. For over a century social turmoil roiled the West. In Russia the new system called capitalism made itself so unpopular there was a revolution. In others, such as Germany, Italy and France it brought dictators to power.

When people get cut from power and wealth they try to take it back, or hand it to people that appear to be concerned with them but aren’t.

There is a floor as to how bad it can get, however, regardless of what the libertarians think. Conditions have already reached the point to make Trump the GOP nominee and Sanders a viable Democratic challenger, and many states are raising their minimum wages since Washington won’t. Eventually we will have to adopt significantly more redistributive policies such as a universal basic income or there will be a revolution. I think the demographic changes in the US which is making the younger generation significantly more liberal will result in the adoption of such policies in the near future.

Robots will have to be programmed and maintained, unless they are so advanced that they can program themselves and will never wear out or need replacement parts.

Everyone is NOT FREE to pursue the activities they find most fulfilling because our society values human beings by the amount of money they make. If work is obsolete what will you do with all the surplus “non productive humans”? Assuming you are not a genocidal maniac.

I agree, but would have a lot more faith in that if I had not already thought Trump would have come to some end already about three different times. Just the fact of being that wrong so far tells me to have no faith in that assumption now through November. At one time we both thought Bush would be the guy at the convention. Then a couple massive missteps by Trump himself.

As long as cheap shipping makes production truly global, the solutions will also have to be global. The UN International Labor Organization, though pretty toothless, is one model. Turns out that the Wobblies were probably right, just a 100 years too early.

See Beta Colony in The Vorkosigan books by Lois McMasters Bujold: at puberty or thereabouts, a child gets a contraceptive implant and their ear(s) pierced to indicate adulthood in that respect. Then after the big assed party is free to make their own mistakes (with help from licensed sex councilors/prostitutes). Of course this would require a level of sanity about sexuality that is utterly unavailable in the US. But then the best SF books always do…

And as technological innovation continues to increase wealth more, the UBI can be increased to reflect that. More people could work part-time, retire early, take extended parental leave, sabbaticals, etc. Getting wealthier shouldn’t be a problem if we handle it correctly.

One of the interesting points in the discussion is what effect the UBI would have on small towns. With a low cost of living, they become attractive. Without the intense pressure of finding a job just to eat, there are kids who would stay or older people who might choose to move back. Technology already gives people more flexibility to do interesting work from remote locations. Distributed manufacturing enabled by 3-D printing will allow more people to work in small-factory jobs. Would be a good thing for struggling communities to have a population with reliable income to support grocery stores and gas stations, schools and infrastructure.

I would love to see the universal base income happen. Don’t know if I’ll live that long, mind you, but I think it’s a wiser move than some of the alternatives.

Societal values will have to change. In a world where robots do all the work, money should be obsolete, and everyone will belong to the leisure class.

For that to work, everyone would need a decent education, either in intellectual pursuits or in creative pursuits. As it is now, too many people around the world would have no earthly idea what to do with all that free time. Idle minds and all that.

Considering the USA has a significant minority dedicated to abolishing or crippling public education, I doubt we’d reach such an educational level any time soon.

Before we can even reform education, we will need a reformed consensus. Right now Americans cannot find a working definition of societal good. The November election will perhaps show if that is improving, but a 49-48 ‘win’ is a loss.

Remember a few days ago I posted a link about how some yahoos from an invite-only auto club got pinched doing over 100 mph in the Twin Cities on I-394?

Seems they got a new angle to play….

Lawyer: Threatening white powder sent to exotic car drivers accused of speeding on I-394

Threats in the form of a suspicious powder have been received by several of the drivers accused of using a west metro interstate for a racetrack recently in exotic sports cars at more than 100 miles per hour, a defense attorney said Monday.

“Several of the individuals have received anonymous packets in the mail containing white powder,” said Marsh Halberg, who is representing at least four of the 12 defendants charged with reckless driving in connection with the high-speed cruise on April 23 along westbound Interstate 394 and continuing after the route changes to Hwy. 12.

“There is a genuine concern for the safety of the individuals at this time,” Halberg said, adding there have been no ill-effects from the contents of the packets.

Halberg said the packets have been turned over to the FBI, which “has been very responsive” as it investigates the items. An FBI spokesman declined to confirm or deny that it’s looking into the matter, a standard response unless the agency is seeking public assistance in an investigation.

There’s been no determination yet on the makeup of the white powder, Halberg said, adding that “I don’t want to speculate on why someone would send the envelopes.”

Perhaps maybe because they’re douchecanoes?

Have to see what the city council does, but the local Fox station, which comes on at nine so we see them first, said most of the people at the meeting were against the ordinance. A lot of them identified as Republicans, with some of them business people.

There was also an outside protest.

Three hours of hearing from people, the council is getting around to talking about the proposal.

The USA is one of the few countries with a decentralized education system. So, while all students in, say, Malaysia, cover the same material no matter where they live, in the USA, students in rural Kansas may have a very different curriculum than students in suburban St. Louis. Common Core is supposed to address that, without in fact imposing a nationally mandated curriculum, but even CC gets right wingers’ underpants all twisted up. They even get upset with AP courses, which only reach a small fraction of students, because the AP curricula are national in character — imposed by the College Board which owns the AP trademark and can do whatever it likes to preserve the integrity of the program.

Homeschooling takes the decentralization even further. Many states are reluctant to require homeschoolers to follow the state curricula, because Gawd. So, those kids can get a half-assed education if their parents are using Gawd-approved curricula like Abeka.

It’s a forlorn hope that Americans could agree on a uniform curriculum for all students to follow.

If you just dismiss Trump as who he is, you miss the allure. That is because most here are looking for truth, not what they wish it to be. The same as it ever was is happening. Jobs are lost, industry changes, the rich get rich and the poor get poorer. For Joe Sixpack, it sucks. Big. But most Joes think a mouth like Trump will act on their behalf. 30 years of “Clinton sucks” on AM hate waves, and the rise of Fox and the assorted echos, gives you the picture now in front of you. I grew up in Philly and watched entire neighborhoods walk around shell shocked. Closed. Done. And you with 4 kids, a row house mortgage and no car. You walked or took the trolley, El or bus to and from that paycheck. Gone. Take that and multiply it times over a million. The jobs went from north to south, to Mexico to China, and now to never. Gone. Trump says all that shit. Bring it back. Make it great. Yes. We hear it for what it is. It rings with some. You cannot dismiss it out of hand. For a lot of places, it’s North Philly 1969. Saying all that, I despise Trump with heat of a million suns. That motherfucker has screwed more people than some towns have living in them. The GOP built that stage this jackal stands on, cannot bring themselves to denounce him, cannot offer up anything better than an utter sleaze bag named Ted Cruz, who not only is entirely inedible, he names Carly Fiorina as his sleazebag sidekick. Nice work. Beautiful. Now if the down ticket of this epic clusterfuck either maintains or gains seats, it’s all on the Democrats. For if ever there was a rat ticket, this is IT. So the left, the Bernies, the Liberals, the Progressives better look and look hard. A purity test right now is one more bullet in a chamber of Russian roulette.
EIGHT years of Obama. I hope the future is as bright.

Trump offers a significant segment of voters The Easy Answer to everything. They don’t want (or can’t understand) long explanations or nuanced debates about how we got to be where we are today. They want it to end, and Golden Trump will make it happen, just by uttering the words from his mouth. Bomb ISIS. Fuck China. Build a wall. Expel the foreigners. Build cars in America. Make America great again!

The last thing we need now is some other segment of voters getting all butthurt because their Chosen One, Bernie, loses the nomination to a more centrist candidate. In a contest with Trump, Bernie would likely lose. Hillary would likely win. Not voting or spitefully voting for Trump or Stein is selfish and incredibly stupid.

It was Warren Harding. I sold them (and an old pair of Dynastar 180 slalom skis) so I could buy the Salomon 1080, the worlds first twin-tip ski. I remember when I bought them, I thought I had made a mistake. They were so short (191 cm, which is *long* these days).

I still have those 1080s, and it’s always funny to see the looks on the young’uns faces when I show them those skis. “Yes, they’ve been making twin tip skis for almost 20 years…”

The BBC joins a delegation of Nobel prize winners and the crown prince of Liechtenstein on a tour of North Korea. One stop is a children’s hospital in Pyongyang, where they find healthy-looking kids on exercise equipment and people in white lab coats pretending to be doctors.

One of our Nobel laureates, Aaron Ciechanover from Israel, is a medical doctor. He wants to ask the doctors here about childhood cancer treatment. The white-robed staff look confused. Prince Albert of Lichtenstein is starting to have his suspicions.

“I don’t think these are real doctors,” he tells the interpreter. “Can we find some real doctors for the Nobel laureates to talk to?”

That tacky Tory Twit was also a supporter of President Obama from almost the moment he announced his campaign. He renounced the right long before Charles did.

I’m not sure the timeline. Both Charles and Andrew had their breaks with the right around 2008 or so. It’s like debating who released the first double LP album in 1966, Frank Zappa or Bob Dylan? We’ll probably never really know for sure, too many details.

I’ve never been south, but I understand the twilights are even shorter there.

Good points on color temperature, but “implied sun angle” is perhaps the key phrase. I don’t think the sun is blocked by the structure. That’s simply the illusion created by the graduated filtration, obviously lighter at the center of the image. But the highlights and shadows seem to me to tell the real story. If the sun were really hidden by the bridge or pier or whatever, the clouds would be illuminated from below, and the shadows of the pier pilings would be long. Instead, the clouds seem obviously to be lighted from above (and maybe to the right), while the piling shadows are short.

Sorry to go on about such a trivial thing, but this kind of photoforensics has always fascinated me. Maybe some of the several other photographically expert lizards can weigh in on it.

How did that bold move of Cruz work out?

Sixty percent have no opinion on Fiorina’s addition to Cruz’s ticket or think it has “no impact” in a Morning Consult survey released early Tuesday.

Twenty two percent say they are “less likely” to vote for Cruz because of the former Hewlett-Packard CEO.
Only 18 percent, meanwhile, say Fiorina makes them “more likely” to cast ballots for the Texas senator.

Trump somehow links Cruz to the JFK assassination? Really? The GOP is going to go with a guy more comfortable peddling conspiracy theories than being reality based?

Figures. The GOP has spent years denying reality - whether it’s that Obama hasn’t destroyed capitalism or the country or health care or the energy industry, so they’ve decided that conspiracy mongering assholes are preferable to guys who don’t openly flog conspiracies (or are the target of said conspiracies).

The GOP prefers siding with conspiracy mongers than their marks.

Remember: there is labor as a commodity to be bought and sold and there is the concept of work and employment as a social and moral benefit.

Where is the “dignity of labor” if a worker’s wages are not enough to feed, clothe and educate a family towards a better life?

Instead, we have workers put on the same level as staples, toner or copier paper, something to be economized and rationalized and disposed of once used.

Another reason to support a universal basic income. We need to make it possible, as growing wealth and automation renders labor less central to our lives, to enable people to have rewarding, fulfilling lives.

It is sad, especially for those members of the congregation to watch their church go up in flames, but fires happen in churches all the time. Often, it’s the result of unattended candles, but sometimes it’s electrical in nature.

Not surprising there’s a spate of fires around holiday periods - it’s when more people are in the building. So far, there’s no indication from the FDNY that arson played a role, though they will investigate to determine the source.

People will try to link disparate bits of information together (how conspiracies start), even though there’s no actual evidence.

I see it as no different than starting a conspiracy claiming that the fire at St. John the Divine in December 2001 was part of the war on Christianity, even though it was due to electrical problems in a church gift shop. Proximity to 9/11 and the Flight 587 crash would lend to link, but reality suggests otherwise.

NYPD arson investigators have a top-tier reputation. When our PX burned in Italy, the Army contracted with them to do the investigation.

Concealed carry gun-wielder intervenes in domestic dispute and shot dead in Texas

As the number of states allowing people to carry guns has increased, reports of injuries and deaths have also risen.

Just last week, a churchgoer in Pennsylvania — in possession of a concealed carry permit and a some sort of badge to prove it — intervened in an already settled spat between congregation members over reserved church seating. The man, Mark Storms, approached Robert Braxton, showed him a gun on his belt and a gold badge, then asked him to leave, reported the Associated Press. Braxton threw a punch, then Storms fired two shots, killing the man.

Storms was charged with voluntary manslaughter, the AP reported.

Last fall, a Detroit woman with a concealed carry permit fired at a fleeing shoplifter outside a Home Depot. She was later sentenced to 18 months of probation and stripped of her concealed gun permit. She told a TV station that she “will never help anybody again.”

Around that same time, a customer at a Southside Chicago bodega fired at a robbery suspect wearing a mask and brandishing what looked like a real gun. It wasn’t, but the shots fired by the customer, a concealed carry permit holder, killed the robbery suspect. Soon after, police announced that charges against the customer were unlikely.

On Monday, a new Tennessee law was passed allowing full-time employees at the state’s public colleges and universities to carry handguns on campus.

Since 2007, the number of Americans holding concealed carry permits has nearly tripled, rising from 4.6 million to 12.8 million in 2015.

Naturally, the real good stuff is always buried near the bottom….

Trump: Military leaders shouldn’t talk to the press

If he becomes commander in chief, Donald Trump won’t let military generals speak to “the dishonest press,” out of fear they’ll spill national security secrets.

“A general should not be on television,” the Republican front-runner told a crowd of supporters during a rally at Carmel, Indiana, on Monday. “I don’t want our generals on television. I will prohibit them.

“I don’t want them saying things like ‘our nation has never been so ill-prepared.’ Even though it’s true, I don’t want the enemy knowing that.”

Seriously though, Delta’s probably balancing short-haul flight delay/cancel versus telling people to hold it for 2 hours. Shitty.

On a recent flight by a Delta code share (one of their local short haulers), they switched planes and delayed us 2+ hours to replace brakes. Flight was only about 60% full, so that inconvenienced the fewest number of ppl. Yeah, the same Cruz who shut down the government in an effort to take healthcare away from people. The same Cruz who brags about how much hell he raises in DC against The Establishment. The same Cruz who campaigns against SSM and for “bathroom bills”, the same Cruz who complains about “New York Values”, etc.
