This Week on Politics: Trump Goes Mola Ram on the GOP

This one’s going to leave a mark
Opinion • Views: 69,958

It’s not often that you see Rachel Maddow as chastened as she was last night. She ran down the long history of kooks, cranks, dingbats, racists and shitheels that have run for president, and found a little traction with the paranoid-freakazoid fringe. And then she came to the fact that Donald Trump is now the GOP nominee and there is a chance - a real, live, honest-to-god chance, that this egomaniacal Mussolini-wannabe could wind up as the Most Powerful Man On Earth.

Youtube Video

“God bless America,” Rachel said. Uncharacteristically grim. She’s a master at keeping things light, at not going in for bombast or end-of-world hysteria. But this one, you could tell … this one has shocked her to her core. She honestly thought there would be a contested convention.

And now we all know that there will not.

Glenn Beck even says “it makes us pretty racist, it makes us big government guys … I will not endorse it, I will not tolerate it.”

Youtube Video

“You will never elect another GOP person to high office. Ever again.”

There really are few things as hilarious as watching the GOP try to simultaneously embrace Trump and yet convince everybody outside the party base that they don’t subscribe to the fecal matter issuing forth from his mouth. “Yeah, he’s batshit crazy, but we love him!”

Thing is, the culture of the right has matched Trump long before the political platform. AM radio, FOX News, the endless roster of outrage-peddling pseudo-intellectuals and their pious equivalents all contributed to building an alternate reality in which only conspiracy and pure evil can explain why the viewers don’t have everything they want.

Whoa! Promoted to the front page again! And I seem to have touched off a moment of nostalgia for one of my favorite films of the 80s (even though my sister’s nails left marks in my forearms during that crawly-bugs scene). As I recall, it was one of the first movies to get the newly-minted “PG-13” label.

Anyway. Thanks for the promo.

I can’t see far enough to predict what this is going to do to the GOP. The party has been hijacked by hate radio and Fox, an endless stream of paranoia, anger, resentment and ignorance. Will a 49-state blowout cause them to realize that the cheap high they’ve gotten off having their own lapdog propaganda mills has led them into a blind alley?

If you really want to change politics in America … reinstate the “Equal Time” clause into the FCC, and fucking enforce it. Put Rush and Hannity and Ingraham and Steele, and all the rest of the freaks off the air - or at least force them to stop putting out pure hated and propaganda and calling it “news and opinion.”

I’ve taken some artistic license with this.

Rod Serling Narrative to the start of a Twilight Zone episode.

Donald Trump a dealer in petulance and poison. His rather arbitrarily chosen America is his personal götterdämmerung. What we are watching is the metamorphosis of a twisted fanatic, poisoned by the gangrene of prejudice and ego to the status of an avenging angel. Upright in omnission dedicated and fearsome.

There just aren’t that many Romney states that can plausibly turn blue, even with Trump as the nominee.

I’ve wondered what would happen, if in late October, after some kind of attack/Hilary meltdown, if Trump is close to winning … would Europe break away from the U.S., leave NATO and join with Russia? What would it take for that to happen? Trump has already threatened to randomly nuke countries that piss him off, and round up minorities in a repeat of the Final Solution.

If Texas goes blue, that might do it. Leave aside S. Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee; you’re probably right that it would take Pol Pot throwing infants into ovens on national TV as the GOP nominee to make them pull the (D) lever.

But losing Texas? Without Texas, the GOP does not win a national election. Glenn Beck is crazy, but he’s not stupid. That part he realizes. What happened in California becomes the national standard - rural areas are angry white & rednecky, and the rest of the country goes about the business of cleaning up the mess the way that Jerry Brown has done. That’s a best-case scenario.

Of course, the California budget is still balanced precariously on the 1% making a killing in their tech-fueled IPOs, and we are still living with the Original Sin of Prop 13 making the tax system dysfunctional and corrupt …

Just watched the last minute or so of the Maddow clip again. She’s not on camera - but you can hear her voice start to catch and waver, as though she is on the brink of bursting into tears, the way she did when she had the Sandy Hook parents on the show.

A lot of suppressed emotion going on there.

When I stop to consider it? Me too.

It still just doesn’t seem real.

Two things we can expect: The GOP will go nasty and will try to turn this into an election over who is the least objectionable, and the media will support them in the endeavor by unearthing the box listed “Worst of the 90s” and playing it constantly with “Both sides are bad!” playing on constant loop in the background.

The thing is, you listen to Beck and realize that he can only truly believe that if he hadn’t paid attention to what Republicans have been doing since the 90s.

And that is entirely possible. The GOP and the right carefully crafted this scheme in which they poked passions with conspiracy and angry, shouty pundit-men, yet at the same time told themselves that they wouldn’t be changed by that choice. They lied and deceived, but at the same time told themselves that the people they were lying to and deceiving would eventually see things in their insider, moderated fiscal-first conservative terms.

At this very moment, there’s a conservative “thinker” pushing a column for tomorrow’s NYT through his lower intestine, and it’s contents will be (1) we don’t know where this came from, it isn’t True Conservatism that will save us all, (2) this isn’t our fault.

It’s hard to imagine the Democratic nominee not winning the Kerry map, and that plus Ohio OR Virginia OR North Carolina OR Florida and that’s it. Texas would be gravy, but it would be glorious (speaking as a half-Texan myself). tRump’s anti-Mexican rhetoric may just precipitate the demographic flip a couple of Presidential years early.

Erickson’s thing these days is the Regurgitant, not RedState. If RedState does a 180 on Trump, that will be a sight to behold. Even wingnut super-amnesia powers will have difficulty walking back something like (roughly) ‘in a race between Hitler and Hillary, I’ll vote for Hillary’, which I’ve seen more than once from RedState front-pagers.

Erick’s principals will last right up until the day inevitably comes that he decides that Trump could actually win it all and decides to bring him and his in for the “big win.” It won’t be able supporting Trump, it’ll be about furthering the goals of the far-right conservatism.

I’m of the opinion that West will be on Trump’s short list because of his fame amongst wingnuts for having his soldiers beat the shit out of an Iraqi police officer, then threatening the man with summary execution to extract a “confession” that later turned out to be bogus. That West was only saved from being cashiered out of the Army by accepting early retirement and a loss in benefits will be spun as his being the “victim” of “PC culture.”

AP Source: Clinton aide interviewed in email investigation

WASHINGTON — The FBI has interviewed Huma Abedin, a close aide to Hillary Clinton, as part of a federal investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server as secretary of state, a person familiar with the probe said Thursday.

The person insisted on anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The FBI and Justice Department have been investigating whether sensitive information that flowed through Clinton’s email server was mishandled.

Abedin was one of Clinton’s closest aides during her tenure as the nation’s top diplomat, serving as deputy chief of staff. It was not immediately clear whether other aides have been interviewed, or when or if Clinton herself might be questioned.

“From the start, Hillary Clinton has offered to answer any questions that would help the Justice Department complete its review, and we hope and expect that anyone else who is asked would do the same,” Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said in a statement. “We are confident the review will conclude that nothing inappropriate took place.”

It is not known how much longer the investigation will take. FBI Director James Comey has said there is no timetable for finishing the probe and it’s being done thoroughly.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment Thursday, and a spokesman for the FBI did not return messages seeking comment.
