Yes, PJ O’Rourke Endorsed Hillary Clinton Today

Shock and awe
Politics • Views: 171,468

Well, here’s a bit of news that really did surprise me today; on NPR’s show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! conservative writer PJ O’Rourke actually said he’s going to vote for Hillary Clinton.

I hope you were sitting down when you read that, because it’s true. Here’s the audio. The section in question starts at about 3:16.

MP3 Audio

PJ O’Rourke: Well, Peter, I have a little announcement to make. Yeah, I have a little announcement to make.

I mean, my whole purpose in life basically is to offend everyone who listens to NPR, OK? No matter what position they take on anything, like, I’m on the other side of it, you know.

I’m votin’ for Hillary.

I am endorsing Hillary. And all her lies and all her empty promises. I am endorsing Hillary. The second worst thing that could happen to this country. But she’s way behind in second place, you know? She’s wrong about absolutely everything — but she’s wrong within normal parameters!

Tom Bodett: That is a ringing endorsement! …

O’Rourke: I mean, this man just can’t be president of the US. I mean, they got this button, it’s in a briefcase, he’s gonna find it.

I will be surprised if the number of well known conservatives endorsing Hillary reaches double digits.

Good on him, but that “And all her lies and all her empty promises” shit was lame back in the last century.

It’s all good, but the nutters/Trumpeteers will just call them what they are: Beltway insiders.

My post from downstairs:

Earlier today, I had the pleasure of hearing P. J. O’Rourke endorsing Hillary Clinton for president — “she’s wrong about everything, but in a sane way.” (Or words to that effect.) It’s going to be an interesting summer.

(P. J. is one of the people I’d like to slap upside of the head and ask why he hasn’t noticed that his Republican Party is GONE, BEREFT OF LIFE, RESTING IN PEACE, a spectre with its name is haunting America. But that’s another story.)

Reposted to note that I meant what I said about slapping him. And not just to tell him his party is dead.

Including me. Uber and Lyft were incredibly convenient for going out after work or on the weekend. I could go home, drop off anything work related, get ready, take a bus downtown and meet up with friends, then not have to worry about waiting an hour or more for a cab when I was ready to leave. Plus the Uber and Lyft cars were nicer and cleaner than the cabs.

It sure has. Part of it is they are just babies. To be in training and then racing since they were two, then shipped around from track to track. Horses like routine. A lot of babies just can’t hold it together that long without a let down, not counting things like racing luck, or just a tiny thing like a sole bruise, or ding. A lot of training has to be just making things as calm and safe as can be, to control the stress. We had a friend, who was Germany, and a smart horseman. He used to earn a living taking horses that burned out at the track, taking them to his quiet farm in the country, and just ponying them for miles and miles at an easy gait across country. Let their minds and bodies rest. They could go back to the track and do pretty well, after their ‘vacation.’

Or maybe the cab companies could have gotten over themselves and allowed Uber and Lyft to compete in the market when they saw how DWIs were dropping after ride sharing got here.

I’m genuinely pissed that Uber and Lyft are leaving. This hurts people like me who don’t own cars. Now I’m stuck with the horrible taxi companies again. It’s like going back to McDonald’s after you’ve had gourmet food.

The cab companies have an app. It sucks. You wait for an hour for someone to deign to pick you up, and that’s if you get lucky. It’s awful. Uber and Lyft guaranteed rides in minutes.

The cabs hated the competition. It’s no coincidence that the city council member who wrote the new rules that Uber and Lyft were protesting got almost 25% of her campaign donations from the cab companies.

That’s really cool. The whole horse racing scene flirts with animal abuse (well, more than flirts). You can tell some of the horses really enjoy the competition, though.

Well, we don’t have to worry about fights here with Uber and Lyft versus cab companies.

No cell service. No one takes credit cards. No bank issues credit cards here. One cab in the whole county (run by the county).

re: #99 Lidane

The cab companies have an app. It sucks. You wait for an hour for someone to deign to pick you up, and that’s if you get lucky. It’s awful. Uber and Lyft guaranteed rides in minutes.

The cabs hated the competition. It’s no coincidence that the city council member who wrote the new rules that Uber and Lyft were protesting got almost 25% of her campaign donations from the cab companies.

That’s bad. I used a taxi app in Malaysia, because they’re competing with Uber there, too. The cabs were all clean and prompt, and you didn’t have to haggle with the driver about the fare. My last driver there was a retiree who got tired of being a retired office worker, and got his hack license. He said he enjoys the work.

We’re close to Albania in Western Nebraska. The only national bank branch here in the county (Bank of the West) might issue credit cards, but they don’t have an ATM machine at the bank. (They did get us the Canadian money we need for our upcoming July trip though … it took two weeks.)

Sorry this is one of those stupid upside-down live blog thingies, so read from the bottom up:

4:45 p.m.: Trump: “I’m going to be back here a lot because we can win, we can win. We can win Washington state. I think we’re going to win Oregon, also.”

4:43 p.m.: Trump: “The big question is, will she [Clinton] get away with the email scandal? The system is rigged. She’s guilty as hell. Will the Democrats let her run? I hope they do. I would love to beat her.”

4:37 p.m.: Trump: “Hillary Clinton wants to abolish the 2nd Amendment. She wants to take your guns away. She wants to abolish the 2nd Amendment.”

4:36 p.m.: Trump: “Iraq is Harvard for terrorists. If you want to be a terrorist, you go to Iraq. Iraq is Harvard for terrorists.”

4:33 p.m.: Trump: “On foreign policy, Hillary is trigger happy.”

4:31 p.m.: Trump: “We should build safe zones [for Syrian refugees] but we can’t bring them to Washington state.”

4:26 p.m.: Trump: “I call her the goofus — Elizabeth Warren. I hope Hillary picks her [for V.P.] … I would love to run against them.”

4:24 p.m.: Trump: “Let me tell you the last person … that crooked Hillary Clinton wants to run against — and believe me, I know — the last person she wants to run against is Donald Trump.”

4:20 p.m.: Trump: “We have political hacks negotiating with some of the smartest people in the world from China, from Mexico …”

4:16 p.m.: Authorities say a few protesters were arrests at the Guide Meridian blockade at River Road.

4:12 p.m.: Trump: “I love the evangelicals.”

4:05 p.m.: Trump: “Crooked Hillary, crooked Hillary. Can you imagine another four years of the Clintons? It’s time to move on. She’s totally controlled by Wall Street.”

4:02 p.m.: Donald Trump takes the stage.

I repeat, what an asshole.

“…Something that many people miss is that Uber and Lyft’s objection to mandatory fingerprinting is really about their vision for the future in which their technology is used not only to transact ground transportation, but nearly every shareable service imaginable. They want to avoid being regulated as a taxi company, because in five years they plan to offer dramatically more. We’re already seeing experiments like this with UberEATS, for example.

That’s a valid consideration for these companies’ resistance to regulation. From a business standpoint, being locked in (and regulated) as a TNC may seriously complicate future growth in other verticals. Yet right now these companies are TNCs, and of course need to be treated as such.”

re: #97 William Lewis

Are you going to repeal all the regulations on the others then, or do Uber and Lyft simply get a free ride, if you will, because of the “Independent Contractor” lie?

The new regulations targeted Uber and Lyft and ride sharing in general because the cabs had a stranglehold on the market. When you’re the only game in town and people are waiting for hours on the weekend to get a ride, why would you want new businesses coming in and getting to customers in a matter of minutes?

The fact is that DWIs dropped dramatically once Uber and Lyft got here. In the past, people would go out on the weekends, and if they were drunk, they’d chance the 10-15 minutes to drive home instead of hanging around waiting for a cab at 2am. Ride sharing changed all that. It kept people safe and got drunk drivers off the road. Now we’re going to lose that and the convenience of ride sharing. This sucks.

Back on horse racing:

Turkey discovers 2,000 year old horse racing rules on stone tablet (BBC)

Analysis of the writing on the tablet, which is in the ruins of an ancient stadium, suggests that there was a keen sense of fairness in the sport, one historian tells Anadolu Agency. “It says that if a horse comes in first place in a race it cannot participate in other races,” says Prof Hasan Bahar from Selcuk University.

A winning owner was also forbidden from entering any other horses into an event’s subsequent races, apparently to give others a chance at glory, he says. “This was a beautiful rule, showing that unlike races in the modern world, races back then were based on gentlemanly conduct,” he’s quoted as saying.

For what it’s worth, there is at least one “ride sharing” company that has said it will stick around: getme.com . Don’t know too much about them, but they at least have the benefit of being local and letting us keep Austin weird…

I voted against Prop 1 myself. Uber and Lyft could perfectly well operate here without it (they operate under more stringent rules in Houston and NYC) and it was clear from their behavior (especially pulling out nine months before the new regulations actually go into effect) was a blackmail attempt on the city, and that I couldn’t support. The fact that Lyft now says they are “pausing” operations suggests to me they’ll be back sooner rather than later.

For what it’s worth, Lyft and Uber may have proven its possible to spend too much money on an election. Their incessant advertising turned a whole bunch of ‘eh… whatever’ votes among my circle of friends into hard ‘nos’, due to their pushy, histrionic stance.

The final straw in my facebook feed was that apparently Lyft sent a text message to a whole bunch of their customers reminding them to vote. Everyone on my friends list who got one of those messages voted a hard ‘no’, meant to send a message saying ‘don’t fucking spam my phones, assholes’.

I’m sorry, but calling Uber “ride sharing” is such bullshit.

It sounds all nice and friendly, like they’re your buddy giving you a lift, but what they really are is an unregulated taxi service that makes bigger profits by pushing the costs onto the drivers, whom it doesn’t really seriously vet.

Oh, so Austin wants Uber drivers fingerprinted, and that’s making Uber sad? Boo-fucking-hoo. Every time Mrs. FBW gets a job as an aid, or a tutor - even volunteering - it’s another fingerprint check. If Uber objects to that, they must have something to be afraid of.

Losing a convenient service? Well, that sucks. Maybe you should bitch at Uber.

I don’t really get the resistance to fingerprinting and running background checks on drivers. It’ can’t just be the cost because it’s not that great vs. the profits companies like Uber and Lyft generate. Is it just some slippery slope bullshit where they’re afraid of losing the insulation between themselves and drivers that independent contractor status provides.

I should really research the whole thing more but it’s never come up because I have my own car, don’t use a smart phone and never have more than one drink when I’m out. At first glance the insurance situation strikes me as fairly convoluted and ripe for abuse. I’m honestly surprised most car insurance companies cover cars belonging to drivers involved in this shit.

But putting everyone in a race to the “independent contractor” bottom that essentially is indentured servitude while forcing companies that comply with city law doesn’t really seem like a way to grow a cab business.

And, punish Uber for coming into towns and violating laws.

You don’t have the option because Uber and Lyft took their dolls and dishes and went home in a sulk. They weren’t banned from the streets, they were just asked to screen their drivers as thoroughly as their competition is required to. If they can’t make a profit under those circumstances - which I HIGHLY doubt - then maybe they aren’t really a viable business. If, as I suspect, they only pulled out to discourage OTHER cities from passing similar requirements, then fuck ‘em.

I’ll be writing and calling the city council to let them know my opinion on this. I just have to wait until the urge to curse them out for destroying my transportation options passes.

Apparently, services that are affordable, convenient, and which helped dramatically reduce the DWI rate in this town are bad. Who knew?

re: #169 Targetpractice

I really do think we’re gonna be shocked by how many states that Trump ends up putting into play.

The problem for him is that every single State he turns into a plausible loss is a State he has to divert finite campaign resources trying to defend. A state like Georgia should be an export State, where both campaigns divert resources into swing State Florida. Only the Republicans should have excess support to spare there. Now it appears they may not, if Georgia really is in play a minimal amount of effort on Hillary’s part can probably tie up a far greater number of Georgia based Republican resources that would otherwise be better spent outside the State. In other words Hillary doesn’t have to make anything like a serious play for the State to turn it against him, because she doesn’t really need it at all but he desperately can’t afford to lose it.

One thing they mentioned today at the training session is that in Democratic phone banking circles California is called the Death Star due to our enormous population and solid blue status, because we can point in basically any direction and focus all of our attention wherever it is deemed needed in that moment. Republicans used to have that in Texas but even it is inexorably turning purple and the excess support they have there will soon have to be focused inward.

Basically if this trend continues at all, just a few solid red states being put into play totally destabilizes the already narrow and shaky Republican path towards winning in November. The dynamics of the national ground game could quickly turn this into a positive feedback reinforcing loop and lead to an epic rout.

Still it’s dangerous to take anything for granted, because Trump is just that fucking dangerous and psychopathic. He cannot be allowed anywhere near the Presidency. That’s why I’m volunteering and will continue to do so until the general election is over, something I’ve literally never done before. It’s why I’m going to be annoying for a moment here and urge others here to volunteer if they can. I don’t want to be all evangelical and preachy but the stakes really are high this time around.

Anyway that was me practicing my “ask” and trying to be all wonky ‘n shit.

It just seems to me that Uber and Lyft are actually just cab companies who want to avoid the regulations every other cab company is subject to by pretending to be something they aren’t.

In which case the problem isn’t that the city is coddling the cab companies. It’s that Uber and Lyft can’t compete on a level playing field.

I will be surprised if the number of well known conservatives endorsing Hillary reaches double digits.

I strongly disagree…..if certain scenarios are met. One of them could easily be:

i) Trump says something deeply offensive about an ethnic group.

ii) Some Republicans in swing states rebuke him.

iii) Trump attacks those Republicans out of habit.

iv) A significant number of Republicans realise that they either need to rebuke Trump to avoid losing both the House and Senate.

Even if that scenario doesn’t happen, I think it is incredibly likely that Trump is going to start lashing out if it’s obvious that he’s going to lose two months before the election. Which again would be a trigger for Republicans to openly say “vote Repub down ticket, but for Hillary for Prez”.

What is the GOP strategy in the face of this looming disaster? Start impeachment proceedings against Hillary before she is even nominated. DO everything to discredit the validity of the election and its outcome. Overblow every case of irregularity or suspected voter fraud. And in the end, just as the birthers refused to recognize Obama as their legally elected President, find some excuse not to recognize Hillary as such.

Hey Ben, whoever you are … I am a Sanders supporter, and you know what? If Mrs. Clinton gets the majority of the pledged delegates in the primaries and caucuses (and it looks like that will be the case), then Mrs. Clinton should get the nomination, and I will support her.

The consequences are too high not to. Mrs. Clinton’s voting record is almost entirely the same as Mr. Sanders’s record, and sitting out (or writing in or voting for a third-party candidate) is not the same as opposing a fascist talking yam.

How one might ask the esteemed suspended jurist of the Alabama Supreme Court how this conundrum could be resolved? If there was only some rule, some document, that addresses that … oh, yeah, the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution (which I presume he swore to uphold and defend).

Maybe Uber & Lyft should have spent the $8 million they dropped pushing Prop 1 on getting their “independent contractors” to meet the local ride-hailing ordinances

Uber seems to have a problem with any type of ordinance.

This is from Feb of last year.

Uber stops operating in Boise, dismisses city’s proposal

But Uber management wasn’t pleased with the city’s proposal, which included background checks for drivers, annual inspections by the city, requiring driver’s carry insurance, making drivers adhere to airport shuttle regulations, requiring drivers get a physical and commercial licenses, and requiring Uber to get a business license.

Those regulations are less stringent than those imposed on local cab companies.

Uber resumed operations in Boise after Gov. Otter let a law written by Uber go into effect by refusing to veto or sign it in April of last year.

I’d rather just tell the city council to get over it and stop coddling the cab companies.

You don’t understand. Public transportation here is terrible, with limited options and inconvenient routes. The cabs are filthy, expensive, and their app is terrible. It’s not uncommon to wait an hour or longer on the weekends for a ride, which is dangerous at night when people are drunk, since they end up giving up on getting a cab and driving instead.

Companies like Uber and Lyft were a godsend. Finally you could get around easily and more cheaply. The cars are nicer and the drivers were friendly. It was fantastic. Now I don’t have the option anymore and it sucks.

When I visited Moscow 10 years ago, people hitchhiked everywhere. You put your palm out and a driver stopped, you agreed on a price, and the driver took you to your destination. There are taxis too, and excellent public transportation.

Uber and Lyft are ride-hailing apps. If they want to enable hitchhiking, then don’t demand money from the drivers once they have paid for the app. If they want to compete with the taxi companies, accept the same regulations that the taxi companies have to follow.

It seems the facts that Google provides skews voters toward Democratic candidates, like She Who Must Not Be Named.

Maybe someone who has been following the political news so far (and I think I have been, to a fairly large extent) can explain something to me. And that’s the extreme persistence of the “Hillary the Hawk” meme. It seems to be a given, on both margins of the body politic, that if elected President, the first thing Mrs. Clinton will do (probably before even changing into her gown for the Inaugural Ball) is to order some bombing or invasion somewhere - and that a Clinton 45 Presidency will inevitably feature bloodstained military adventurism on a (depending on the intensity of one’s views) OIF- or even Vietnam scale.
OK: I realize that Hillary Clinton is no committed dove or knee-jerk antimilitarist - it’s just that so much online commentary about her as a candidate (and speculation about her as President) seems to accept the a priori assumption of a belligerent bloodthirstiness that would make Tamerlane look like a peacenik. Assumptions with, AFAICT, are not backed up by any actual positions expressed by Hillary Clinton. Am I not looking in the right places? Or is this just another artifact of decades of obsessive Clinton-bashing (by both Left and Right)?

re: #230 Jay C

Yes.

All you need to do is ask anyone that uses the well worn Clinton “issues” for a real example of any one of those issues. I bet 90% of the time they can’t give you an example…and the remaining 10% will be the very general “I just don’t like/trust her.”

We are a lazy society. We rely on others to do our thinking for us. The danger with that is we also now have lazy institutions that do nothing to help educate the lazy thinking.

Conclusion: All bets are off. We could end up in a very bad place and we will have done it to ourselves. But we will bitch and moan about it. It doesn’t take much energy to do that…plus it is something we love to do because we’ve gotten very good at it.

Didn’t we fight a Civil War over this state nullification nonsense Roy Moore is pushing?

And his claim is there is a dispute between state courts and Federal courts (well, his state court anyway) and thus it needs to be resolved.

How one might ask the esteemed suspended jurist of the Alabama Supreme Court how this conundrum could be resolved? If there was only some rule, some document, that addresses that … oh, yeah, the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution (which I presume he swore to uphold and defend).

Geez, I only have a high school education and I understand this stuff. Would that qualify me to be elected to Alabama’s Supreme Court, because Chief Justice Roy Moore sure isn’t qualified to be there.

You are over qualified.

Palin will work to defeat Ryan in primary for Trump stance

Palin said in an interview that airs Sunday on “State of the Union” that her decision was sparked by Ryan’s bombshell announcement to Tapper last week that he wasn’t yet ready to support Donald Trump, the Republican presumptive nominee. Palin endorsed Trump back in January.

“She then reached over, put the snake gently under her coat and continued toward her grandmother’s house.”

Morning Lizards.

Watching Hillary on Face the Nation dance around what she means by calling the Drumpstick a Loose Cannon.

I don’t know why she just can’t come out and say “He’s batshit crazy!”

I have a feeling Hillary is using the ‘tease’ method of pissing Trump off to get him to attack in his typical bellicose way. She then can watch the eruption and let others like Big Bill, Elizabeth Warren, Pres Obama, VP Joe and others take the shots.

if she comes out and says “he’s batshit crazy” it can be used against her by the people that hate her…both sides of the spectrum at this point. She’s better to soft pedal it as that will start him going all “trump” just the same.

Would I love her to say what we all want her to say. You betcha! But, I want to make sure she is elected and Trump is not more.

It’s interesting how so many on the left accepted the right-wing framing of Hillary as “dishonest”. Like any politician she’s not an angel in that department, but neither does she strike me as more mendacious than the average D pol.

Usually her Bosnia story is cited, but anyone up to date with the memory research will be able to tell that the most parsimonious explanation is false memory (I also think that’s the best explanation for the Brian Williams faux pas). She had told the actual accurate story in her book so why would she then intentionally tell such an easily verifiable untruth?

Other than that there don’t seem to be any examples approaching credibility.

I think of the Bros who run Lyft and Uber like I think of that PharmBro asshole. Sure, medications and rides are good things to provide to people, but it stinks that Uber puts all of the risk and expense on their drivers and craps on anyone that gets a negative review for any reason while they become fabulously wealthy. Meanwhile they spend millions to make sure that they still don’t have to exercise any responsibility at all.

They probably wouldn’t have gotten into this situation in Austin if they weren’t such inflexible libertarian dickheads.

I did a bit of Ubering the past few months. It pays for my fishing addiction. Got a note this morning:

David,

I wish we had better news.

Disappointment does not begin to describe how we feel about shuttering operations in Austin. But as you’ve heard before, we simply cannot operate under the City’s new rules. As of Monday, May 9, at 8 a.m., Uber will no longer be available within Austin city limits.

Since Austin is the only city in the Hill Country to impose these new rules, Uber will continue to serve surrounding areas.

From rides to rallies, you never stopped working for the people of this city. And your dedication motivated us to do everything possible.

While the road back is uncertain for now, we won’t give up on Austin.

We’ll be back in touch soon. Thank you.

re: #170 Donnie With The Good Hair (AKA Sophist)

That’s like complaining that you favorite restaurant shouldn’t have to submit to the health department because there aren’t any other good restaurants in your area.

There AREN’T any other good restaurants. Public transportation - which I depend on to get to and from work, BTW - is really only safe during the day. The routes are often inconvenient, meaning I have to make crazy plans to get across town for doctors appointments or whatever. I’d take light rail if I could, but we have ONE line (yes, one) and its route is a joke. It doesn’t go anywhere that really benefits large parts of the population in this city.

Living in Austin without a car isn’t easy. I’ve managed, but it’s not easy. Uber and Lyft were the one missing puzzle piece I needed. It’s affordable, quick, clean, and highly convenient. Also, their standards for hiring are actually stricter than the cabs. All the cabs care about is if you don’t have any alcohol or vehicle related crimes. Uber doesn’t hire anyone who’s been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor or higher, no matter what the crime. I’m more likely to end up in a felon’s car with the cab companies.

My only real option at this point is to tighten up my purse and save as much money as I can to put a down payment on a car, which is going to be tough. I’m not going back to the cabs if I can help it.

I lean towards Clinton, but I will absolutely support Sanders if he somehow gets the nomination. I don’t hate Sanders; I don’t hate his supporters. A lot of what he’s floated does appeal to me.

That said: some of his more rabid supporters, and the Senator himself, are approaching Heath Ledger Joker status. They either have lost sight that a President Trump would be worse than the last four Republican presidents combined, or worse, they don’t care.

I’m halfway through Maddow’s Friday interview with the good Senator now. Listening to this reminds me that his self-proclaimed outsider status is a bit of a con job, because he’s showing the long time politician’s gift of manipulating people’s emotions.

There’s a lot of “It’s unfair that I’m losing to Clinton” in his responses. As others have pointed out, Clinton is a lifelong member and ardent supporter of the Democratic Party. Bernie Sanders, IIRC, at one point ran as a Democrat, and when he beat his primary opponent, suddenly switched to Independent.

Now he’s running as a Democrat while basically telling the party that he wants to lead “Do it my way or I fuck your shit up in Philly this summer.”

No shit, Sherlock, that the Dems prefer Clinton over you. Because she didn’t just show up out of nowhere and threaten “Vote for me or the GOP takes the country.”

But no; that’s all “unfair”.

I wonder if Sanders and company are taking cues from Trump on this. Americans are suckers for an overall sense of fairness (except when it comes to things like civil rights and poor people getting health care, apparently). Trump know this. In that sense, he’s not stupid. He knows that angry white Republicans will eat this idiotic shit up when couched the right way.

If the billionaire psycho who openly uses racist rhetoric that appeals to them, and then is forced to actually defend those views? That’s “unfair”.

If a lifelong politician who constantly shits on the party he all of sudden wants to run, and they inexplicably resent this treatment? That’s “unfair”.

I’ll finish the interview later today, but the more I listen to it, the more I’m convinced that Trump has a much better shot of winning in November that people truly understand.

I said this the other day: our nation’s clueless independent voters will see an utter shit show of squabbling and possible violence in Philly*; and then see a group of aggrieved white conservatives orderly fall in line behind an utter fucking racist idiot because that’s what they do; and go “Wow. The Republicans seem so reasonable now that the clown car has been parked. Fuck the low unemployment and record high stock market that Obama oversaw! Trump will fix everything!”

I’ve lived around Americans my entire life, and I will never understand their thought processes.

*That police force is probably salivating at the chance to beat the shit out of liberals, especially ones of color. They did a great job of openly shitting on civil rights during the GOP convention in 2000. I imagine they’re looking at July and going “C’mon, men! We’ve got records and people’s cheekbones to shatter!”

Sully gets taken to the woodshed…

In Andrew Sullivan’s ballyhooed debut in New York magazine, he presents the candidacy of Donald Trump as a unique, “extinction-level” threat to the United States of America. One does not have to read far beyond his headline, however, to realize that Sullivan’s real purpose is to malign his usual antagonists on the left. His argument is an example of just how bankrupt the mode of liberalism he represents has become. It’s anti-democratic and culturally elitist message, however, reveals an opportunity for the left to reinvigorate its politics through an engagement with the humanities - an engagement that mainstream liberals like Sullivan have abandoned.

Most car insurance policies that the drivers have probably *won’t* cover if something happens while the car owner is acting as an Uber/Lyft driver. Odds are their car is insured for personal, not commercial, use. And for personal and to/from work travel.

7 Things You Have To Be OK With To Endorse Donald Trump

1. Deporting 11 million immigrants with a “deportation force”
2. A “total and complete” ban of all Muslims from the U.S.
3. Torture: “We should go tougher than waterboarding”
4. Birtherism
5. War crimes: killing the family members of suspected extremists
6. Shutting down the EPA
7. Changing the law to make it easier to sue journalists who write “negative” articles

Most car insurance policies that the drivers have probably *won’t* cover if something happens while the car owner is acting as an Uber/Lyft driver. Odds are their car is insured for personal, not commercial, use. And for personal and to/from work travel.

I think I saw something to the effect that Uber and Lyft spent something like $8M bombarding Austin voters with advertising on the recent, while opponents spent something like $15K.

When somebody is outspending the opposition to that sort of degree to try to buy my vote,
1) they damn well have a plan on how they’re going to recoup that money
2) I am very leery of how much they feel like they need to buy my support, rather than letting the proposal stand on its merits.

I wonder how the “independent contractors” who drive for the non-companies feel about their non-jobs being used as political collateral by their non-employer.

They’ll double-down on voter suppression efforts. And I half-expect PA and the other state that usually goes majority Dem but has a GOP state legislature will attempt some sort of BS electoral vote splitting measure.

So Uber’s next move will probably be to have their lawyers cobble up some BS claim that their drivers aren’t actually “commercial”, and try to get some court somewhere to buy it….

Their inability to put forth an electable candidate, not to mention so many of the “establishment” lining up to support Trump, makes them look utterly incompetent. Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that Maj. Gen. Yair Golan, the military’s deputy chief of staff, erred when speaking on the country’s annual Holocaust memorial day.
Golan sparked outrage, particularly among nationalists, for saying that he sees evidence in present-day Israel reminiscent of the “nauseating processes” that took place in Nazi Germany. The defense minister, military chief and other officials came to his defense, saying that he was warning of troubling trends in society.

The cynical take is that modern US media cares about nothing other than getting pageviews and ad revenue.

to a point…

But NBC is a wholly owned subsidiary of GE/Westinghouse, who care very deeply about international sales. ABC is owned by Disney, who may or may not be allowed to release movies in other countries, depending how those other countries’ governments feel about the US at any given moment. Fox News has caused Murdoch problems with various European governments, whose broadcast/satellite licenses can be yanked at any time.

Sarah Kendzior thinks it will be close and Trump can win.

Don’t read it you want to be terrified.

Well, I read it.

Though I am open to the possibility of Drumpfskind winning, I think Ms. Kendzior’s take is a bit colored by what she wants to think about the US, which is not quite true.

In America, a nation of failed institutions - economic, civic, journalistic - emotion rules. We can no longer trust what we know, but we know how we feel.

America has endured 15 years of wars, joblessness, social-media rumour-mongering, brutal partisanship and reality TV. What you’re seeing is not America breaking but the consequences of an America already broken. The country was Donald Trump’s for the taking. On Tuesday night, Americans gave it to him.

Our “institutions” are doing quite well, on a relative basis, compared to most nations around the world.

And we’ve had nearly continuous warfare since 1776.

Social-media rumour-mongering is a much more efficient means of passing around gossip than in the good ol’ days, when one had to wait till the next knitting circle or poker game. But that is not a reason for Drumpfskind’s success. Indeed, I consider the blowback to Drumpfskind one of the better uses of social media.

Kendzior nibbles around the edges, but doesn’t fully (or quite accurately) examine, the social angst that some Americans feel today and which gets expressed in the Drumpfskind rallies and support online.

Many Drumpfskind supporters have jobs. His support cannot all be put down to people who have lost their jobs to imports.

“We can no longer trust what we know” - here she touches on something but does not really dig into how this all came about.

Atavism has played a part in Republican politics since Nixon, increased with Reagan, then went on steroids with the “Tea Party”.

Most of the Republican candidates played on this in the current election cycle. What Drumpfskind did so well was the group-identity dog calls, from which even some of the other GOP candidates shied. Drumpfskind was not afraid to go there, where ‘there’ = appealing to explicit bigotry.

Great White Snark  May 8, 2016 • 11:19:22am

re: #344 SoundGuy 2016

Meh. Hyperbole does not scare me. it’s a little offensive to the intellect.

The first is the labor participation rate, which plunged at the start of the Great Recession and discounts the millions of Americans who have been out of work for six months or more

So the boomers were all supposed to avoid retiring until age eighty what? Yes he mentions that fall from more than six million to about two million but plays word games with two million like its five.

Making matters much worse, the government has failed to come up with a plan that adequately supports these people.

General assistance, highly extended unemployment, EBT cards all managed to escape serious notice.

To be clear, Trump’s 42% claim is a lie. But for the millions of Americans working low-wage or temporary jobs or suffering from long-term unemployment, it feels like the truth.

When was that ever untrue for the under employed? Under employed is a such a permanent feature of our economy we have a minimum wage. “Feels like” is an excuse for a selfish perspective like Make America Great Again.

Newsflash every recovery does not become a best ever economy. it’s a tough market out there and we piss away a lot of productivity on instruments of violent policy. Civilians and government btw.

Snarking at the articles author not you guys!

By the way - we have some new code that tries to prevent fake news sites from being promoted at LGF. If someone posts a link to a fake news site (like abcnews.com.co) in a comment, if you click on it you’ll see a warning message that it’s a fake news site. You can still choose to go there if you want, but at least you’ll know what you’re getting into.

And if someone opens the LGF Pages bookmarklet from a fake news site, they’ll see a warning that those sites can’t be posted in LGF Pages and the window will come up with all the fields blanked out.

I was inspired to do this after a contributor posted an article from abcnews.com.co today - the Page itself is very good and says some great stuff, but the link it’s based on is a fake story.

littlegreenfootballs.com

Here’s the regular expression that shows which sites are included in our list of fakes:

“His political career is over but for a miracle because he has so disrespected the will of the people, and as the leader of the GOP, the convention, certainly he is to remain neutral, and for him to already come out and say who he will not support is not a wise decision of his,” Palin continued.

You forgot The Onion! :)

Hey, he manages to be racist and sexist all at the same time! Apparently the only possible way Warren could have gotten the job at Harvard was to claim Native American ancestry. Certainly, it couldn’t be that she EARNED it.

This is the same thing Trump’s saying about Hillary - women have everything handed to them, they don’t earn it.

I can’t imagine that makes women feel especially respected.

Apparently there’s family lore she heard growing up that she had a great-great Grandmother who was 1/2 Cherokee, or some such. This sort of thing is very common in Oklahoma where she grew up, and she’d never questioned it, but neither did she use it to benefit her career.

It’s one of those stupid things that gets used against anyone who isn’t a straight, white, Christian male when they gain prominence. Nobody ever looks for this shit to suggest WE didn’t earn our positions, but if you don’t fit the mold, you must have cheated, somehow.

I can’t tell you how thrilled I am that the EDL (and other) bigots now have to live with the knowledge that a Muslim is the mayor of their nation’s capital city. As a matter of fact, I hope every anti-Muslim bigot in Europe the Western world chokes on the bitterness of that pill for the entire four years of his term.

I’d need a color-coded inventory system on name tags to keep track. I’m thinking a bit like how my wrenches have colored zip ties… Colors for which kids your grandkids come from, then a unique numerical for each grandkid.

“Purple / GK 2”
“Yellow / GK 17”
“Bronze / GK 38”

re: #392 Blind Frog Belly White

A former boss of mine, who is by all appearances 100% Texas white woman, is fractionally enough Chickasaw (I think) that when she had to have her old gastric bypass surgery repaired, and our work’s insurance wouldn’t cover it, she went to the tribe, filled out the appropriate paperwork, and got it 100% paid for using her personal surgeon. She needed to consult with the tribal officer(s) and get it approved, but that only took an afternoon visit up to the Oklahoma City area.

So the rightie toolbags who mock Native ancestry claimed by white people, as usual, don’t know what they’re talking about. There are a lot of advantages beyond “liburl street cred” that she WASN’T taking advantage of.

The other thing is the inherent racism in presuming that nobody blonde and blue eyed could have anything but Northern Europe in their genes. Kind of a ‘One Drop’ situation. There’s no reason that Native American ancestry as diluted as Warren was told hers is would have to be in any way visible.

It reminds me of Kennewick man, whose facial reconstruction actually led some to claim that he proved that White Europeans had gotten to America first, because it looked like Sir Patrick Stewart:

Make it so!

But you know who I see when I look at him? Wes Studi.

Magwa understands English very well.
