North Carolina Sues Justice Department, DOJ Sues NC Over “Bathroom Bill”

The latest insane right wing cause is going to court
Law • Views: 66,233

YouTube

The Republican cavemen of North Carolina decided to sue the Justice Department to try to preserve HB2, the bill that enshrines gender-based discrimination as law. So the Justice Department is countersuing: NC and Department of Justice Sue Each Other Over State’s ‘Bathroom Bill’.

The video above shows U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s statement on this ridiculous situation; and I’m calling it “ridiculous” because I’m pretty sure men who do creepy things in public restrooms don’t dress as women to do it.

It’s just ludicrous beyond belief that Republicans are making this an issue at all, and now they’re going to waste public money to defend outright bigotry.

Things I define as creepy: men following women into the restroom to determine if that’s the restroom they “should” be using.

Thanks, NC, for encouraging this.

He’s the creepy guy who hangs out in the bathroom to make sure you’re a woman and you’re doing woman-y things.

It’s just ludicrous beyond belief that Republicans are making this an issue at all, and now they’re going to waste public money to defend outright bigotry.

It’s what they do. The fact that there have been 0 incidents of trans folk molesting anybody in a rest room is immaterial. The fact that things like peeping toms and people taking pictures over the stall in dressing rooms is already illegal and nothing in the law changes that is immaterial to their agenda.

They create an issue where there is no problem, so that they can then engage in the great grift.

Just a reminder: the rest of the bill also messes with civil rights of LGBT people *and* dicks with local ordinances about minimum wage.

It is a fucking smorgasbord of horseshit and there is more than one reason for DOJ to piss on it from great height.

P.S. Assaulting or harassing another person in a bathroom is inappropriate and awful regardless of the set of genders involved. The image of “little girls bothered by men disguised as trans women” glides around the general problem of “men who feel entitled to grab, touch, and harass women of any age in any setting” that conservatives not only have no answer for, but pettifog and victim-blame rather than address.

Philippines’ Donald Trump claims victory in presidential election

Rodrigo Duterte, the tough-talking mayor in Philippines who tapped into middle class frustrations over rising crime and inefficient public services, claimed victory in the country’s presidential election.

With 87 percent of polling stations reporting, Duterte won 38.6 percent of the ballots cast in an election on Monday marred by violence and delays. His closest rival was Mar Roxas, a former government minister, who had 23 percent support.

Eager to break the establishment mold exemplified by outgoing President Benigno Aquino, voters embraced Duterte’s tough-guy approach to reduce traffic jams on Manila’s congested roads and curb crime. His support didn’t falter through a campaign that saw him make light of a rape incident, deny accusations of undeclared wealth and repeatedly back the extra-judicial killing of criminals.

Ryan says he would step down as convention chair if Trump asks

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Monday that if Donald Trump wants him to step down as a chairman of the GOP convention, he will respect his wishes.

“He’s the nominee. I’ll do whatever he wants with respect to the convention,” Ryan said when asked about that scenario in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Ryan said he hopes he and Trump can begin to get to know each other when they meet later this week.

“I just want to get to know the guy … we just don’t know each other,” said Ryan, who delivered a political bombshell last Thursday when he said he wasn’t ready yet to support his party’s presumptive nominee.

Actually it makes perfect sense for the GOP to try to use this as a wedge issue.

The GOP bullshit that this is all about keeping perverts out of women’s restrooms will be accepted 100% by the GOP base, and will also have significant traction for people who are completely clueless about trans- issues.

In my late teens, early twenties—for reasons I know not of—I got stage fright in public restrooms. A real pain at concerts and sporting events when you really have to go and have been waiting in line and there’s a line behind you. They should come up with a bill to stop that problem. And maybe now have small sanitary napkins like a pirate’s patch next to the urinals for older fellers like me to wrap across the eye when I’m done so I don’t got no dribble in ma trousers.

Even if all those 15 incidents actually DID happen, 15 / 1 000 000 000 is an insanely low percentage of problems. Much too low that new laws are necessary for it.

I then realize that I’m assuming WAY too much that simply isn’t in evidence.

Yep, I just checked in Chrome, and sure enough, embedded tweets aren’t using iframes any more in that browser — they’re now using a cutting edge feature called the “shadow DOM.” That’s why those HTML tags were appearing in quoted comments. If Ryan were smart, he should just hand the convention keys over to The Donald and say: “It’s all yours” (especially now since there’s a “He said, he said” fight going on over an alleged phone call between Trump and Ryan that allegedly happened within the last week.)

THEN you’ll see some real behind-the-scenes action.

We’re living in interesting times for sure (aka “The Chinese Curse”….)

You know, I can understand not wanting to intervene abroad, for any number of reasons including pacifism. Lord knows, we’ve made a total dog’s breakfast of many such interventions.

The thing is, bad shit happens to innocent people, lots and lots of it. There’s the Rwanda genocide - took place entirely without our participation. Suppose we could have prevented that?

Should we draw a bright line around ANY possible intervention?

Damn…I got busy earlier and missed the whole revolting revolution that was displayed in the previous thread.

I have never understood how political arguments can come down to black and white, one versus the other. Politics just never works that way.

But this is the election cycle of 2016. This one is going down in history for sure…and we are we are just 1/4 of the way past. The conventions are the other 1/4 and then the big 1/2 starts.

Won’t that be fun?

Over the last few days one thought has been going through my head. A whole hell of a lot of people are embarrassing themselves most likely in ways they never intended or thought they were capable of pulling off.

This election is making some people really stupid. I only hope that when it is over some of them reflect on some of the crap they said and come to grips with their temporary insanity or temper tantrums…whatever caused them to lose their judgment.

Thanks to Trump and Bernie the purity tests have never been stronger. Here is the thing though…no one human is pure…about anything.

As long as every one human realizes they are in fact human they might be able to convince themselves to climb down from that high horse and join the rest of us that realize some realities.

Good luck!

And I am mostly talking about politicians, their staff, the media (especially political pundits of all sides) and the America public in general…not necessarily LGF members.

It’s freaking nuts out there…

Sometime back in the late 1970s, a young woman from our town posed for a pictorial in Hustler. The town took a kind of quiet - REALLY quiet - pride in that, and a small number of copies were purchased and circulated, discreetly.

Not quite the same thing, of course.

It’s a hoot:

“COMES NOW Defendant AMMON BUNDY1

personal jurisdiction of this court2
, and pursuant to Rule 12(b)(2) and Rule 47(a) of the Federal
Rules of Criminal Procedure, respectfully moves for an order dismissing all counts in the abovecaptioned
matter, for the Court’s lack of subject matter jurisdiction.”

The argument presented here is straightforward: The Constitution of the United States prohibits the federal government’s ownership of the land comprising the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Since the land is not lawfully the federal government’s, the pending counts must be dismissed for lack of subject matter jurisdiction.

They keep using that vile accusation because it works on the same level of “So when did you stop beating your wife?” It hits that basic emotional fear we have about kids, and deliberately ties a violated, marginalized group to the most hated class of criminals in America.

‘…In footnotes, Bundy’s lawyers wrote that their client believes two prior U.S. Supreme Court cases that addressed this issue “were wrongly decided and should be overruled.”

A ruling by the nation’s highest court in 1935 found that the federal government has an incontrovertible claim to the refuge’s wetlands and lakebeds, dating back to the 1840s, when Oregon was still a territory. “Before Oregon was admitted to statehood, the United States is shown to have acquired title which it has never in terms conveyed away,” Justice Harlan Stone wrote in 1935.

The Supreme Court found then that the laws of the United States alone control the disposition of title to its lands. The states are powerless to place “any limitation or restriction on that control.”

That whole thing is worth a read. I especially liked this section:

They contend that it wasn’t until an impromptu meeting after a Jan. 2 rally in Burns in support of two Harney County ranchers that Bundy, his brother, Ryan Bundy, Robert “LaVoy” Finicum and others formed the Citizens for Constitutional Freedom group and planned to take over the refuge in a “lawful adverse possession claim.”

Federal prosecutors previously have argued that Ammon Bundy’s actions at Malheur weren’t “born out of impulse” but were “deliberate and designed to undermine authority at every stage.” They’ve alleged that Ammon Bundy and co-defendant Ryan Payne visited Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward last fall and urged the sheriff to protect Burns area ranchers Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son, Steven Hammond, from returning to prison on federal arson charges.

Payne and Bundy told the sheriff that if the Hammonds spent one more day in jail, there would be “extreme civil unrest,” a federal complaint said. By mid-December, a video titled “Time for some camping” was posted on a Facebook community page called “Harney County Liberty News.” It showed a man announcing that he was doing some “tactical camping” in Harney County and posing outside a “Hammond Ranch Rd.” sign, the complaint says. They allege Bundy and his followers participated in an armed takeover of the refuge and refused government demands to leave the property.

According to Ammon Bundy’s new legal filings, the occupiers notified the Harney County Sheriff’s Office shortly before they secured the refuge property and buildings and renamed it “The Harney County Resource Center.” They contacted a utility company seeking to take over the electric and other services and maintained the perimeter to control those who entered and left.

Donald Trump, in Shift, Turns to Republican Party for Fund-Raising Help

Donald J. Trump took steps to appropriate much of the Republican National Committee’s financial and political infrastructure for his presidential campaign on Monday, amid signs that he and the party would lag dangerously behind the Democrats in raising money for the general election.

Mr. Trump, who by the end of March had spent around $40 million of his fortune on the primaries, has said that he may need as much as $1.5 billion for the fall campaign, but that he will seek to raise it from donors rather than continue to self-finance.

But Mr. Trump has no fund-raising apparatus to resort to, no network of prolific bundlers to call upon, and little known experience with the type of marathon, one-on-one serial salesmanship and solicitousness that raising so much money is likely to require — even if individuals are able to contribute up to the current limit of $334,000 at a time to the party. And he has to do it all in six months, with a deeply divided party that is still absorbing the fact that Mr. Trump is its standard-bearer.

Edit: Where do those riffs on Mr. Trump’s hats come from? They’re a hoot.

Nothing wrong with Strawpeople

Personal experience that goes in line to some of the general comments in this thread…a good way to close the evening.

I recently had a photo contract job to shoot exteriors of some new apartment complexes going up in the central Ohio area. So for three weeks I spent some time when the weather was decent running around taking shots of building exteriors.

At one new complex I noticed a woman watching me a bit. No problem. But as I moved around the complex complete with nice ponds all around with small trees and beds of plantings I noticed she was now in a different spot checking me out.

I knew what was going on…60 year old white guy with a camera…gotta be up to no good.

So, I walked right up to her and asked if she was concerned what I was doing and explained my reason for being there. I totally caught her off guard because what pervert would just walk right up and tell you they were perverting???

She was a bit embarrassed and said she had a young niece (who was nowhere in sight as far as I knew) she was protecting. I told her I understood, that is why I approached her. As I continued she disappeared. She was calmed.

And I thought how sad that she was in a way immediately looking at me in the negative light based on some very common stereo typing and not noticing I was aiming the camera constantly as buildings with no people, let alone women or kids in the viewing area. I was already self-conscious of that when I took the job.

You would think that the 10 to 20 minutes she followed me she might have realized it. And not many perverts with a camera are going to be using a tripod and spending a lot of time in a single spot focusing and getting the shot right. That would be way obvious.

It’s hard to shake people from what they suspect. But I understand how powerful that fear can be and how it takes very little to make one fearful. Lot of that going on.

Later Lizards…after today’s hot topics…be cool!

Her video card may have momentarily overheated; I’m hoping I was able to avoid permanent damage and also teach a valuable lesson that she can use going forward. Most likely a Trump voter.

“…Views on History
Bruner thinks slavery was a minor issue in the Civil War. In July 2014 she wrote that historians were biased against the southern states and rewrote history books once everyone alive during the Civil War had died (screenshot). She also thinks there’s no need for Black History Month, Mexican-American History Month or any other formally recognition of the historical contributions of minorities to the United States (screenshot).

Bruner also appears to back a Donad Trump-like plan to ban Islam from the United States (screenshot):

“Islam is not a religion. Islam is an inhumane totalitarian political ideology with radical religious rules and laws and barbaric punishments for breaking the religious rules.”

There’s a difference between Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism/Biblical Literalism. Evangelicalism goes back to the 1700s with Jonathan Edwards and the Great Revival. Pentecostalism is a more modern sect.
