Is Facebook “Censoring” Conservative News? Facebook VP Replies.

Nope
Internet • Views: 53,590

Here they go again. Following a thinly-sourced report at Gizmodo that Facebook “suppresses” conservative news sites by preventing them from showing up in the Trending News section, the entire right wing universe launched into an orgy of whiny victimhood because they knew this was happening they just knew it! The liberals are oppressing them again!

High-pitched whining instantly began emanating from the upper echelons of conservatism; for example, RNC chairman Reince Priebus screamed FACEBOOK MUST ANSWER!

Then the Republican majority in the Senate joined the Persecuted Victims’ Chorus, as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation sent a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg demanding ANSWERS DAMN IT! THEY WANT ANSWERS!

“Facebook must answer these serious allegations and hold those responsible to account if there has been political bias in the dissemination of trending news,” said Sen. John Thune, the committee’s Republican chairman, in a statement. “Any attempt by a neutral and inclusive social media platform to censor or manipulate political discussion is an abuse of trust and inconsistent with the values of an open Internet.”

Of course, these are the same people who’ve been trying to destroy the “open Internet” by allowing Internet providers to set levels of service and favor websites that pay them for the privilege, but Republican hypocrisy isn’t really news any more, is it?

So is it true? Is the evil liberal Facebook censoring conservative news?

Well, today Tom Stocky, Facebook’s vice president of search, posted an answer to this question — and he flatly denies anything like this is going on.

Facebook Post

But of course, that’s what a sneaky liberal would say, right? This won’t stop the whining; “Facebook censorship” will now be an unquestioned fact to the right wing masses because they really do love playing victim.

It would be interesting to ask these fine upstanding conservatives what the difference is between a Christian bakery that refuses service to gays and a private social network like Facebook. Because there seems to be a bit of a double standard here.

It’s another nothing burger. First, Facebook has no obligation to party neutrality. None, zero, zip, nada. Second, they have every right to ignore sub credible news outlets like Brietbart. Third news editing is highly subjective. A learning curve applies.

If more social media were more careful about credibility, the ‘net would be a much improved space to hang out in.

It is all political grandstanding, but the GOP senators know that in many people’s minds, FB and Twitter are some sort of public utility. They are a “public space” in the sense that a mall food court is…open to the public but still private property.

“Censorship” refers to a government agency suppressing information, not to a private company choosing and editing its content.

How many tales of woe - “Men in Women’s restrooms”, “Facebook censoring conservatives” - will it take to get people to vote for Trump?

Another reason why “trending” conservative topics may not be as likely to hit “trending” on Facebook.

Since it’s entirely appropriate to avoid promoting hate speech it’s little wonder that most conservative topics are removed from the running.

nines09  May 10, 2016 • 12:59:42pm

Well they do a horrible job of censoring outright hate site links. I’ve jettisoned a few folks who just kept on linking to sites we are all familiar with. “Dude. If you want to talk to me, or take a picture of this mornings oatmeal, no problem, go for it. But sending me breathless links to Chuck Norris and Ted “Regurgitator” Nugent? Links showing me that the Confederate Rag is just an integral part of some folks heritage? How all of Islam is bad? Planned Parenthood is a……. Please stop.” Then I get another, and it’s buh bye.

17
lawhawk  May 10, 2016 • 1:00:32pm

But it wont stop the GOP from playing up this as a huge scandal or impediment, even though the thinly sourced piece allows that other curators of news were pushing conservative news stories and burying liberal ones:

Other former curators interviewed by Gizmodo denied consciously suppressing conservative news, and we were unable to determine if left-wing news topics or sources were similarly suppressed. The conservative curator described the omissions as a function of his colleagues’ judgements; there is no evidence that Facebook management mandated or was even aware of any political bias at work.

Sen. John Thune is ready to investigate Facebook over all this, despite being against the Fairness Doctrine years ago, and thinks this more important than doing work the Senate is required to consider, like holding hearings to advice and consent on Presidential nominations to the US Supreme Court.

I’ve lost a number of Facebook friends that way.

They post derp. I correct them. If they scream at me, good bye.

Although once one apologized for getting things wrong. They’d posted something that proved, proved the West was selling weapons to Daesh. I pointed out that Daesh is not a nation so no other nation can sell weapons legally to them as there will be no End User Certificate. Also the weapon in the accompanying picture was a Soviet era ATGM, a Sagger. No surprise as Daesh controlled land that had belonged to Syria and Iraq, both of which had been supported by the Soviet Union for decades.

They not only apologized, they deleted the post and thanked me for the facts.

Regardless of how laughable the outrage is, the sheer coordination of it and the fact that actual GOP politicians are pouncing on it to make hay of it is just extremely frustrating. I’ve seen far too many times before when the GOP gets to make fire out of smoke just by screaming a whole fuckton and the media deciding ‘wow, they’re making a lot of noise, it must mean something real!’ Even when the result is a nothingburger, they get to make out like it’s a giant supermassive scandal for at least a decade while other things get sunk into the ether so the media can devote its time to Proof of Liberal Conspiracy #384565

Global warming milestone about to be passed and there’s no going back

Within the next couple of weeks, a remote part of north-western Tasmania is likely to grab headlines around the world as a major climate change marker is passed.
The aptly named Cape Grim monitoring site jointly run by CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology will witness the first baseline reading of 400 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, researchers predict.
[…]
“Once it’s over [400 ppm], it won’t go back,” said Paul Fraser, dubbed by CSIRO as the Air Man of Cape Grim, and now a retired CSIRO fellow. “It could be within 10 days.”

I am lucky that my girlfriend lives in a first-floor apartment in Frankfurt that stays shady and never got above 25°C during last summer’s heatwave. Yeah….not so lucky here. I live in a panelák (plattenbau in German) on the top floor and during last summer, it was about 38 C in my apartment. Compounding matters is that fact that my window/balcony faces west.

Yeesh it was bad. I’mma thinking of looking for some kind of portable AC/cooling unit. There’s a store downtown I’ll check out this weekend…..they might have some I can get at “pre-season” prices. Last summer was brutal. One of students ended up hospitalized for a few days; she’s the really active sporty type and she overdid it in the heat. She’s said this year she’s going to be spending more time in the local shopping center if it gets that hot again - at least the shopping centers are air-conditioned. Her apartment is pretty similar to mine, except she’s on the 5th floor, but again, a west-facing window.

My continuing top-tip for those people wishing to make a fast buck is to sell air conditioning units in central Europe in the next 10 years.

BBL. Another appointment for my Mom. She fell a month ago and she’s got a compression fracture in her back. She’s been sleeping in a chair. Hope they can get her back in her bed soon.

The vast majority of them don’t even qualify as “news”—they’re propaganda memes, circling the vast toilet bowl. They spread from one hack to another, like rabies or gonorrhea. The problem with most of these self-proclaimed “citizen journalists” are that they barely know the meaning of “news,” to begin with.

re: #47 Lidane

So much this. Even though it’s bullshit.

I just looked at my Facebook trending topics and it has links for Duck Dynasty idiot giving his expert opinion on bathroom laws, plus even a trending story on how Facebook censors conservative news from Gizmodo. You’d think they’d at least squash that bad news if there was some grand conspiracy.
