Donald Trump Picks Well-Known White Nationalist Leader as a Delegate in California

Why do all these white supremacists keep associating with Donald Trump?
Politics • Views: 71,996

For some reason that’s a total mystery, white supremacists, neo-Nazis and racists of all stripes seem to be attracted to the Donald Trump campaign.

Trump himself has retweeted white supremacists dozens of times now; and his campaign gave press credentials to a notorious white supremacist.

Breitbart “News” is crowing today about the “celebrities” on Trump’s California delegate list: Trump Surprises with Celebrities on California Delegates List.

But another celebrity didn’t make it into the Breitbart article; today via Mother Jones we learn that the Trump campaign has also selected one of America’s most prominent white nationalist leaders as a California delegate.

Imagine, if you will, my huge surprise.

On Monday evening, California’s secretary of state published a list of delegates chosen by the Trump campaign for the upcoming Republican presidential primary in the state. Trump’s slate includes William Johnson, one of the country’s most prominent white nationalists.

Johnson applied to the Trump campaign to be a delegate. He was accepted on Monday. In order to be approved he had to sign this pledge sent to him by the campaign: “I, William Johnson, endorse Donald J. Trump for the office of President of the United States. I pledge to cast ALL of my ballots to elect Donald J. Trump on every round of balloting at the 2016 Republican National Convention so that we can MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” After he signed, the Trump campaign added his name to the list of 169 delegates it forwarded to the secretary of state.

Johnson leads the American Freedom Party, a group that “exists to represent the political interests of White Americans” and aims to preserve “the customs and heritage of the European American people.” The AFP has never elected a candidate of its own and possesses at most a few thousand members, but it is “arguably the most important white nationalist group in the country,” according to Mark Potok, a senior fellow for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which tracks hate groups.

Here’s the delegate list released by California’s secretary of state:

UPDATE at 5/10/16 2:30:05 pm by Charles Johnson

In a frantic attempt at damage control, the Trump campaign is blaming the inclusion of William Johnson as a delegate on “a database error.” It is to laugh.

UPDATE at 5/10/16 3:05:45 pm by Charles Johnson

Before blaming a “database error,” Trump’s spokeswoman Hope Hicks denied it completely.

UPDATE at 5/10/16 3:59:34 pm by Charles Johnson

And now William Johnson has resigned with a classic statement:

Oh brother. Now the Trump campaign has totally dropped the “database error” excuse.

UPDATE at 5/10/16 5:40:56 pm by Charles Johnson

And the latest news: the Trump campaign didn’t notify California’s secretary of state in time, and white nationalist William Johnson remains on their delegate list. Oh, this is too good.

I also see Chuck C. Johnson’s lawyer Mark Meuser on the list - as a delegate for Ted Cruz. LOL.

Ummm, Charles….

That “delegate list” you reproduce seems to be headed: “pledged to Ted Cruz”, not Trump. With William Johnson’s name not visible.

Johnson has gained notice during the presidential primary for funding pro-Trump robocalls that convey a white nationalist message. “The white race is dying out in America and Europe because we are afraid to be called ‘racist,’” Johnson says in one robocall pushed out to residential landlines in Vermont and Minnesota. “Donald Trump is not racist, but Donald Trump is not afraid. Don’t vote for a Cuban. Vote for Donald Trump.”

and

Asked in February about the robocalls, which are funded by Johnson through a super-PAC, a Trump spokeswoman would only tell CNN that the candidate had “disavowed all super-PACs offering their support.” In April, the Huffington Post reported that Trump returned a $250 donation to his campaign from Johnson.

This is the guy whose ads Trump had to “disavow.”

Last paragraph of the MJ article:

We ended up in a mirrored conference room to meet with three AFP sympathizers, two middle-aged women and a young man. They talked about how Trump had enabled a new kind of “honest discourse,” how he wasn’t a racist but a “racialist,” and how he had left them feeling “emancipated.” Johnson also now finds it easier to be himself: “For many, many years, when I would say these things, other white people would call me names: ‘Oh, you’re a hatemonger, you’re a Nazi, you’re like Hitler,’” he confessed. “Now they come in and say, ‘Oh, you’re like Donald Trump.’”

Emancipated. Yeah, uh-huh. It must feel great after so many years of all the white folks being persecuted & subjugated like they have been since…NEVER.

I expect economic protectionism to be a very, very compelling argument for a state that is made up of almost exclusively white working-class voters whose fortunes are directly linked to a dying industry that is perceived to be under assault from the mainstream left.

A continuation of Obama’s policies doesn’t sound so great if you’re tied at the hip to coal.

Again based purely on demographics, and hair-on-fire clothes rending about open primaries and whatever else notwithstanding, I expected broad Sanders-Trump crossover support coming into the game in WV.

Their approach to economic foreign policy has always been similar, and if the giant blaring klaxon in your life is the melting away of your local unskilled labor, no shit you’re going to be at least Trump-curious once Sanders bows out.

In an ideal world, you’d like that. But the fact is, because of the tremendous stickiness of party loyalty in this country, the polls will always be competitively close. Any skew has to be accounted for, adjusted out, or at least recognized as such. This also may indicate part of the reason why polling has seemed so unreliable in recent years; early returns may not be representative of the true result, and even the slightest skew can yield a different prediction.

That might be true if the Repubs actively depress turnout of minorities.

Otherwise, that flies in the face of 40+ years of increasing minority voting—-the minority population itself has grown faster than the white population and not all of it is growth in the black community.

Also, if you’re one of those aforementioned white working class voters who thinks Sanders’ protectionism has your back, you may perceive that an increasingly colorful mainstream Democratic Party is focusing more and more on minority stuff rather while you slip into the muck. re: #37 Kragar

Via Balloon Juice yesterday, there’s this from the NYT:

These conservative Democrats are a legacy of the old Democratic strength among white voters in the South, where many white conservatives nonetheless remain registered as Democrats. In several states, these voters can be something of a consolation prize to Mr. Sanders, who has often complained that closed primaries prevent many of his younger and independent supporters from voting.

It bodes well for Mr. Sanders’s chances in coal country this month, starting in West Virginia on Tuesday. West Virginia, like Oklahoma, has far more registered Democrats than Obama voters.

Even today, 49 percent of voters are registered Democrats in West Virginia, but Mr. Obama won just 35.5 percent of the vote against Mitt Romney in 2012. Mr. Obama won just 59 percent in the 2012 primary in a one-on-one contest against Keith Judd, who was in prison at the time and who will be on the West Virginia ballot again on Tuesday.

On a very fundamental level, Trump’s campaign does not appear to be capable of enforcing message discipline.

This was in some ways helpful in the primary, as every inconsistent flip or flop put his name back at the top of the list. I am skeptical it will be helpful for him now. Now that there are less storylines to which people are paying attention, he just looks incompetent.

The Libertarian Party recognizes 2016 Presidential candidates who have campaign websites, are dues-paying members of the LP, have met all U.S. Constitutional requirements to serve in office as president, and are not running for the nomination of any other political party. They have also filed with the FEC, with the exception of Darryl Perry, who has chosen not to file, as a protest against the FEC, claiming that it lacks constitutional authority..

I’ve been gagging down Chris Matthews this evening. He’s been on since 6:00 PM eastern. He has had both Paul Manafort and Ann Coulter plus a bunch of other Republican folks.

One thing stands out, especially with Paul Manafort…Trump is going to get nasty. Real nasty. He more or less said it.

Robert Costa was on and they showed a video of Hillary addressing the nation about Benghazi and blaming it on the video, then the mothers, and family members of the Benghazi victims talking about Hillary blaming the video and ending with Hillary laughing at the Benghazi hearing while the female member that asked the question she laughed at heard in the background saying “I don’t think this is funny” as the spot closes. Costa said they have many such spots prepared.

Manafort was doing a little arrogant laughing and saying you just wait…Donald is very media savvy and no one has run a campaign like he will.

We know the Clintons can get a bit muddy themselves. What will be key is if they go down that road against Trump or they let there be a big a big contrast between them.

If the Clintons get nasty this could be a real mud slinging contest.

re: #153 ObserverArt

If the Clintons get nasty this could be a real mud slinging contest.

This, I suppose would be the other way that it could happen. I’ve been saying for a while that a Clinton-Trump match up could lead to a low turnout election (because both have historically high unfavorable ratings). The other possibility (though much less likely than a low turnout election) would be a significant number of voters casting third party “protest” votes.

Walker administration delays $101 million debt payment

Gov. Scott Walker’s administration this month put off making $101 million in debt payments, driving up costs for taxpayers by more than $2 million in the long run, according to the Legislature’s nonpartisan budget office.

The state was due to pay off the debt in May, but instead restructured it so that payments would be extended for another eight years. That translated into $2.3 million in additional interest costs for taxpayers, according to a pair of memos issued Tuesday by Bob Lang, director of the Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

Don’t forget coal folks in Ohio. For a long time there was a hell of a lot of coal pulled from this state too.

The southern part of Ohio is very much in sympathy with West Virginia and Kentucky. Many communities in Ohio were called “Little Kentucky,” GroveTucky,” Olive Hill North” and such.

One road…route 23 which runs from out of Portsmouth Ohio up through Columbus to Toledo and on into Michigan is called the Kentucky Highway to the Jobs or if you want to be crass…you can use the popular Hill*%@ Highway used in a song by Dwight Yoakam.

On election day, Mitt Romney defeated Barack Obama in the state of West Virginia by a landslide 26.76% margin. The Republican ticket took 62.30% of the vote to the Democratic ticket’s 35.54%, and also swept every county in the state.[1] This represented a historic loss for the Democrats in West Virginia, which had long been a Democratic stronghold up through the 1990s.

Just had a crazy storm cell move through DFW airport area. Sideways wind that I’d guess was up to 70mph, sky turned yellow, pieces of trees everywhere, transformers blowing up before my eyes, and the wind blew rain past my door seal into a puddle in the entryway. Not a lot of lightning but very loud, deep thunder that sounded more like explosions than anything else.

I’m venturing out into the aftermath for a grocery run. Stupid storm watch delayed my errands for hours after work. And, sadly the sun set before the sky started clearing, else sunset would have been fantastic.

So, apparent, Gene Simmons was an asshole. Again.

Apparently, Gene Simmons doesn’t seem to understand that addiction is a disease of sorts, considering how it messes with your brain.

I’ve also mentioned elsewhere that Prince suffered from chronic pain. So his addiction, while unfortunate, was also legit and not just something that happened from a one-time injury that he kept rolling on.

Opioids are scary and potentially dangerous, but this whole stigma around getting addicted is ridiculous. It’s not always because of moral failing or abuse, when the only tools available to help some problems are highly addictive ones.

They try to push the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors class drugs (Cymbalta, etc.) as pain managers. My buddy the dog trainer was on it for some time. It was not good. He liked that it did stop some of his chronic back muscle issues…but the side effects were not good. It totally changed his mood from a happy-go-lucky type to a moody maudlin mess.

I’m curious how he thinks things like software development and data collection would work? “As we receive communications from Russia, China, and North Korea, we print them out. This room represents yesterday.”

I saw something like this earlier this evening and my reaction was a pure WTF? What are some of these people seeing and thinking?

WV’s primaries are “semi-closed” in that voters registered to a party can only vote in that party’s primary. Independents may select which party’s primary they wish to vote in.

A lot of Republicans aren’t voting on the Republican side because Trump’s the effective nominee, so they are crossing over. And then you have the Democrats that didn’t vote for Obama in 2008:

He went to WV and told them to do that.

The Pittsburgh Pens beat the Baltimore Staplers tonight in a fantastic showing of sports.

On the other hand, Canada couldn’t get an icesport team that doesn’t use brooms into the big icesports thing.

Look what they did in the Colorado statehouse today.

Well, that didn’t work out.

That’s my state senator bringing the news of the vote.

If you have Twitter follow your representatives, some of them actually give good information and listen to constituents.

Mom & Pop marijuana:

‘…Months of vigorous lobbying by their trade organization, the California Growers Association, has tailored this year’s leading legalization initiative to their interests. The Adult Use of Marijuana Act will initially restrict the size of legal pot farms to one acre and prevent any single entity from simultaneously cultivating, manufacturing, and retailing marijuana. It’s the opposite of the approach taken in other legal-pot states, which typically control the market by limiting licenses to large, vertically integrated growers.’

At least they didn’t use the word “Artisan”.

FWIW, I was at McDonalds and they were advertising an “Artisan Burger” on their menu. I think the word has lost all meaning. Hell, I don’t even call my hand-crafted pens “Artisan”, because I’m not a freaking artist. I’m a craftsman.

Mom & Pop marijuana:

Much like Kentucky’s tobacco-growing model. A lot of tobacco is (was) grown on very small plots, policed by a state subsidy.

I disagree somewhat. The old Reagan-era GOP blew the dog whistles. When Rush Limbaugh took over during the 90’s that was the 8x10 color glossy.

What we have now is the Trumpenstein/GOP/white nationalist racism version of modern Manga tentacle-porn.

re: #335 calochortus

I’m sitting here watching the CA senatorial debate on PBS. I still don’t know who to vote for (other than not the Republicans.) Harris and Sanchez each have pluses and minuses, but I don’t know as much about Sanchez because she’s from SoCal. Kamala Harris is pretty local.

Google “Loretta Sanchez Christmas Card”.

Then vote for Kamala Harris.
