The Return of VP Candidate Sarah Palin?

Half-governor redux
Politics • Views: 59,350

Could this election possibly get any weirder? After all, we already have a racist Birther billionaire running for president on the GOP side, so how could it get any more bizarre than it already is?

Answer: if that racist Birther billionaire selects Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon turned presidential candidate turned unfiltered pitchman for Donald Trump and now part of the presumptive nominee’s vice presidential search committee, sat in the back of a Town Car with his wife, Candy, on his way to a televised interview. He had just explained to the reporter riding along that he wanted no role in a Trump administration when news arrived of a new poll naming him as the best-liked of a list of potential running mates.

“Who else was on the list?” he asked quietly, maintaining his usual inscrutable calm. The most favorably regarded contenders after himself, he was told, were John Kasich, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin and Chris Christie.

“Those are all people on our list,” he said.

Palin would fit the qualification of putting a worse executive threat than Trump in the VP seat in order to head off an impeachment attempt.

“I think I’m pretty much as vetted as anybody in the country could be vetted,” Palin told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I think there are so many other great people out there in American that could serve in this position.”

“I think if somebody wanted to choose me, they already know who I am, what I stand for,” she added. “They wouldn’t be in for any surprises.”

As some day it may happen that a insurance marker must be found,
Trump has a little list — He’s got a little list
Of Planned Parenthood offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!
There’s the pestilential DC Gasbags who beg for autographs —
All people who have flabby butts and Youuuggeee fantastic laughs —
All fetuses who are up in dates, and floor pro-choicers with them flat —
All persons who in kissing ass, smack those cheeks with you like that —
And all those liars in the Press who on spoiling tête-á-têtes insist —
They’d none of ‘em be missed — they’d none of ‘em be missed
The Donald’s got ‘em on the list — he’s got ‘em on the list;
And they’ll none of ‘em be pissed — they’ll none of ‘em be pissed.

I wonder about the punditocracy’s third-party scenario. Imagine Clinton and Trump slanging each other for 6 months, driving each one’s negatives through the floor. In a low-turnout election, Clinton takes the Kerry map, Trump takes the ‘04 Bush map, except instead of Ohio being stolen for the GOP by Diebold, they ran John Kasich and he takes Ohio.

The election’s thrown into the House and they choose the candidate who came in an extremely distant 3rd in the Popular Vote. Would the American people sit still for this?

Kasich has a teabagger majority in his legislature. If he tried that, they would revolt and impeach him.

However there may be another third party possibility if Wall Street dumps Trump and pumps up Gary Johnson on the Libertarian ticket. There could be a possibility that Johnson may run up to half of Perot’s 1992 total. That might create a critical mass for the Libertarian Party to become a real player on the national level.

Expect to see the Trumpkins and Bernie Bros make use of this:

The Wire actor Wendell Pierce arrested and charged with battery after early morning ‘hotel fight with female Bernie Sanders supporter’ during movie shoot in Atlanta

Wendell Pierce, 52, was arrested outside the Loews Hotel in Atlanta
The Wire actor allegedly grabbed a woman’s hair and smacked her head
Row is believed to have been over the woman’s support for Bernie Sanders
Pierce is in Atlanta filming One Last Thing and was staying at the hotel
He has been charged with battery and was released on a $1,000 bond

I predict spews of racism coupled with a generous amount of victim status claiming from the Sanders Twitter Hoard.

Tangentially related, there’s an excellent documentary called “Hotline” about people who work at crisis lines, phone sex lines and yes, even psychic hotlines.

The filmmakers actually interview Ms. Cleo herself who tells the story of how she ended up in that position. Evidently, the management saw something in her and made her the face of the company but she didn’t understand the legal implications of the whole thing so she made practically no money despite having her face plastered everywhere.

The documentary is on Netflix. HIGHLY recommended.

Instead he caught the human side rather than the hero side of Ruth and made a portrait for the ages.

I hope it passes. That would mean every west coast state including Alaska has legal cannabis. States should look to Colorado and Washington and the regulatory system we have in place. A billion in sales last year in Colorado? That’s the tipping point. When people see that you can make money legitimately and help fund schools and the homeless problem, dominoes fall. California legalizing would be yuge!

As most of you know, I’m a poet. I’ve been writing a fair bit lately and slowly but surely cobbling together enough work to release a collection. Here’s a recent one I’m quite proud of.

THE MUSIC

She met him on a blind date,
At the old Tree Top Cafe,
They were talking, they were laughing,
It was a gorgeous summers day.

Before long things had grown
Into something so much more.
They couldn’t wait to see the wonders
The future had in store.

The one night, a fancy dinner,
And an in house five piece band,
They were tearing up that dance floor,
Swinging ‘round near hand in hand.

The music was electric,
It became their special tune.
And by the time song was over,
They were the darlings of the room.

They danced like no one’s watching,
They danced with all their heart.
Two people meant to be together,
Romance, passion, drama, art.

Soon the wedding bells were ringing,
She looked so lovely dressed in white,
Two hundred fifty in the chapel,
It was a fascinating sight.

But not quite one year later,
She barely had the ring.
Three and a half months pregnant.
He came home and packed his things.

He said it wasn’t working,
But she was not to blame.
He said there was no other woman,
Just his own remorse and shame.

Soon it would be revealed,
He deceived her and he lied,
And on that day inside her soul,
The lovely music died.

So she’s there and crass and bitter,
How did this ever come to be?
The truth behind the man he was,
Why did she never truly see?

Then some long months later
One lonely winters day,
She’ll put the music on again,
And when the song begins to play…

She’ll dance like no ones watching
She’ll dance with all her heart,
She won’t let him take it from her,
She won’t let it fall apart.

Her son is five years old now,
He’s one amazing little kid.
Someday he’ll know her sacrifices,
And why she did the things she did.

It hasn’t all been easy,
She’s seen her share of grim.
But everything was worth it,
If not for her, her him.

And the old ex is out there somewhere,
But she could not care any less,
She doesn’t need the headaches,
And she doesn’t need the stress.

She has done just fine without him,
And though its true he did her wrong.
She’s got it all together now,
And she’s taken back her song.

She’ll dance like no ones watching,
She’ll dance with all her heart,
She’ll dance her way to freedom,
She will never fall apart.

I bet it’s going to be Christie, just by default. It’s not like Christie has a political future in New Jersey anyhow. Might as well.

I can’t think of anyone else Trump would pick (other than Palin), but at the same time, Trump just doesn’t seem to like Christie that much, and is probably concerned about Christie possibly taking the limelight away from Trump.

If it isn’t Christie, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s some little known congressman that Trump picks - either one that is quite young (and so doesn’t appear to challenge Trump’s seniority on the ticke), or an older person, who is close to retiring.

I can’t see any serious politician that wants to have a future wanting to be Trump’s VP pick.

I see everything that he’s doing now as confirmation that he cares nothing about the Democratic Party or democrats/progressives. It’s all about him and his desires. The Democratic Party was the vehicle he chose to attempt to hijack and use for his own purposes. All the while he caucused with dems in Congress he couldn’t be bothered to change his party affiliation to Democrat—-until he got the rotten idea to run for POTUS. F*ck him and the hoss he rode in on. I endorse your graphic illustrating how you feel about him and his supporters. Count me in as another one who is thoroughly disgusted with their behavior. Although they don’t seem to realize it, their behavior is turning off lots of democrats to Sanders and anything he has to say. With the challenges we’re facing between now and election day, we don’t need the divisive, attention-getting acting out coming from them. Their recent shenanigans in Nevada and Alaska at the conventions are reprehensible and shows me that they’re left-wing extremists and no better than the Tea Partiers they love to mock and disparage. They are also failing to acknowledge that they can’t make us do sh*t, and many of us have become immune to their temper tantrums. My only wish at this point is that they sit down, STFU, and ride their hosses off into the sunset, and leave us grownups to unite the party and create strategies to keep Trump out of the WH. I haven’t laid out one cent so far this campaign season. I will soon, but I definitely won’t be donating to Sanders’ campaign because I abhor whiny, demanding, divisive, know-it-all, authoritarians with the heat of one million suns.

Nonsense, there are plenty of choice. Has Trump approached Glenn Beck? He’s looking for a new routine pretty soon. Same with Rush Limbaugh. How about Alex Jones? He’d go for VP in a second. Don’t forget Peter King, or even Trey Gowdy. But Trump should avoid Cruz, as somehow I figure Trump might befall an accident shortly after that announcement.

The only problem with choosing Palin is that he would have to come up with another VP choice after two years. Palin would have to quit to do more for the world by something something.

Death Korps of Krieg

The Death Korps of Krieg is the name given to all of the Imperial Guard regiments that originate from the devastated, post-nuclear Death World of Krieg in the Segmentum Tempestus. Krieg was the site of a rebellion against the Imperium of Man over 1,500 standard years ago in the 40th Millennium and was bombarded with nuclear weapons followed by five hundred years of grinding warfare to purge the heretical rebels. After all those years of nuclear destruction and bitter trench warfare, Krieg was reduced to a scorched, radioactive husk of a world composed of dust and mud whose surviving people were forced to retreat into underground hive cities to survive the toxic planetary environment. The Death Korps of Krieg is a siege specialist regiment of the Imperial Guard and the regiments raised on Krieg seek to repent for their former treachery against the Imperium by displaying a disturbing disregard for their own lives in combat. Death Korps troops excel at wars of attrition and defensive combat in particular.

A 332 m (1000’-ish) antenna mast for broadcast TV and Radio collapsed last night, taking out the power for 500 customers and radio and TV for 200,000 people over 7 counties.
It collapsed about 100m (300’-ish) up, and police have made finds which strengthen their suspicions it was an act of sabotage.
No clue as to who did it at this point.

China has expressed that its feelings are hurt, and also predicted difficulties in the future should the USA get too close to the islands China has essentially seized.

The current regime here seems bent on military and commercial dominance of the region, at least as long as the money holds out. Or maybe in case the money doesn’t hold out.

It’s nice to wake up to a decent article on Monday morning.

This is a good read because of what it doesn’t do:
1. It doesn’t mention Hillary’s asshole GOP opponent.
2. It doesn’t discuss popularity polls or likeablility.
3.. It doesn’t spoon feed campaign talking points (positive or negative) to the reader.

What it does do is state something people will inevitably find difficult to understand - that Hillary’s foreign policy will differ from Obama’s in some ways because they have different mind-sets. This would seem obvious, I agree, but we aren’t asked to think about what that actually means. We’re just supposed to wave our respective flags and hope our team wins the race.

I like reading articles that don’t make me hate the state of our Amazing Race political election culture.

Rise in the sense that while such sentiments have existed at a low level among some on the right (but not among the great majority of conservatives,) they were previously only said in disreputable places like Stormfront and were never heard in places that were considered the public faces of conservatism. While sites like the Daily Caller and National Review Online maintain a proper ban on Jew-hate, breitbart.com has joined some other sites in deciding to let the paleo-right spew its hatred and venom.

I did a little experiment this weekend because I knew there was some kind of Nevada Caucus event and that it’d probably be contentious given how fucked up some of the caucuses and primaries were this year (but seriously, I don’t care about that…spilled milk).

I did shit that needed doing - taking mother in law out to dinner, caring for my brother’s dogs while he was out of town, going wine tasting with friends, planting another Hydrangea in the front yard, building a bookshelf…and I spent as little time paying attention to Twitter as possible. Oh, and I watched network TV news (like your average American back when that was considered average).

You know what? Berniebros weren’t mentioned once. Then again, neither were white supremacist Trump supporters, tiny hands, Benghazi, tax returns, speech transcripts, revolution, etc.

It reminded me just how small a bubble the social media political sphere is.

Oh, and sorry I was a dick about Hillary the other day. Slap me when I do that.

After Alicia Machado won the 1996 Miss Universe title, something very human happened: She gained weight. @realdonaldtrump didn’t keep his critique of her body quiet. Instead, he publicly shamed her, she said. The Republican presidential candidate — who purchased the #MissUniverse Organization that year — said he had pushed Alicia to lose weight. “To that, I will plead guilty,” he said, expressing no regret for his tactics. For Alicia, who was photographed by @emilyberl, the humiliation was unbearable. “After that episode, I was sick, anorexia and bulimia for 5 years,” she said. Over the past 4 decades, #DonaldTrump has repeatedly unnerved women in private. @nytimes conducted dozens of interviews with women who worked with or for him, women who dated him or interacted with him socially; and women and men who have closely observed his conduct since his adolescence. This is the kind of stuff that the GOP right wing culture warriors is fixated on? Bathroom policing. Castrating sex offenders.

But doing stuff that might actually improve society, like expanded access to birth control (which reduces the need for abortions significantly), is something they fight tooth and nail (along with Obamacare).

You get outlets like Heritage and WSJ claiming Obamacare is a failure because rural communities are seeing Obamacare insurers withdrawing from those regions, ignoring that those same regions already had limited insurers operating there because they had such limited populations.

Every hike in premiums is seen as a failure of Obamacare, ignoring that rates rose faster before Obamacare, and the insurers are still trying to figure out the marketplace and setting rates accordingly.

There’s just so much BS coming from the right wing that it’s a shitstorm of epic proportions that will only become even dirtier as we near November.

This is only the edge of the derp.

Yeah, it’s going to be that bad. Especially as the polls show what we know and suspect - that Clinton will win handily over Trump.

Right now, the polls are running tight, but giving Clinton a definitive and consistent edge. That dynamic hasn’t changed, and you’ve got the Bernie bros and NeverClinton right wing gang both engaged in wishful thinking that she’s going to get indicted or worse before November - all based on zero evidence of wrongdoing.

Benghazi is a nothingburger, and this weekend’s news about how the former counsel to Gowdy’s committee said as much.

The emails are another nothingburger.

And then you have go reach back years and decades to long dismissed claims about Clinton wrongdoing, which is why we’re seeing Trump going after Bill Clinton’s infidelities.

That’ll work nearly as well it did the last 300 times they’ve tried that approach. Like before Clinton won her seat in the US Senate.

And if you’re going to bring up infidelity, then Trump takes the cake with his misogynist claptrap - the NYT piece is the tip of the iceberg. And among those who Trump is considering for the VP is Newt Gingrich, who’s another adulterer.

“Family values conservatism” is going to go up in flames with the GOP this election. cycle. But not without a fight - as we see their attempts to shift the culture wars to the bathroom bills, fighting SSM and equal rights/protections by pushing RFRAs that would enable bigotry and discrimination under state law.

Medical bankruptcies still remain a major economic impediment to folks. Obamacare helps reduce the chances that you go bankrupt because of medical care, but only fractionally.

People who haven’t had to deal with major medical issues don’t appreciate just how quickly you can run through your life savings if you don’t have good insurance or Medicare/Medicaid, or very deep pockets.

Just how many people have $50-100k lying around to cover the cost of a hip replacement, like say after an elderly parent falls and breaks a hip, or is struck by a car while out walking. And that doesn’t count the tens of thousands in rehab care and aftercare. The $50-100k is just for the surgery and immediate care in hospital.

You’re talking about $200k or so in NYC metro area.

That’s what the hospital bills. Then if you’ve got insurance, they’ll cover it - perhaps 70-90% if you’re in network, and then perhaps 50-70% if you’re out of network (and just because the hospital you went to is in network doesn’t mean the ER department is in-network, or that the anesthesiologist is.

Obamacare made indigent care much easier to address, since instead of forcing hospitals to pay out of pocket and trying to recoup costs from everyone else, you’ve got far fewer people coming in without insurance. But hospitals still need to cover ER costs. That’s why hospitals are doing more and more urgent care centers - trying to get people to go to those instead so that only those most sick or injured are getting immediate care - a self-selecting triage system. Because urgent care centers don’t require the same kind of gear and personnel that an ER bed requires.

My sense is that it was going 4-4 and instead of having a split among the circuits, the court decided to remand to the lower court for further evidence gathering. That puts even more pressure for Senate to act on the Garland nomination (both to block and to hold hearings).

It also suggests that if Scalia were there, it might have gone 5-4 against the contraceptive mandate, whereas with Garland on the bench, it might have gone 5-4 supporting the mandate.

I googled the case, and the post I read described the sequence that got us to this point starting with the RFRA (the case that triggered the RFRA including Scalia stating that allowing things for religious reasons would raise religion above government). I wonder if there would be a way to challenge the constitutionality of the RFRA?

Precisely because it would elevate religion above government function- and would legitimize discrimination.

This is one of the worst laws to have been passed in the past 30 years. And yeah, it was enacted by Bill Clinton. A law in search of a problem - and it went ahead and created a whole new set of problems.

Carson and Gingrich. Oh, that’ll be spectacular. Just like Palin. Derpfest on line 2.

At least Gingrich or Palin can claim some policy/govt experience, even if both ended up doing more damage than anyone would care to admit. And what exactly does Gingrich or Palin bring to the table? Gingrich wont convince social conservatives to vote for Trump, and he’s a liability on fiscal matters (say, how is his repayment of 2012 campaign debts going; still owes $4.6 million to his vendors). Palin’s not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed - and she’s got that in common with Carson too.

And Carson barely acts as though he’s got a pulse.

That’s some deep bench Trump’s running with/considering. It’s the same nonsense that the GOP was claiming when they had 17 awful candidates running; each was weaker than the next, which is why the field was as open and thin as it was. Everyone was running because no one was a clear favorite and no one was strong enough to take anyone else out. Trump simply survived because he could root in the muck better than anyone else and he appealed to the base more than anyone else by throwing out nonsense better than everyone else - he appealed to the base racist/misogynist positions.

For the tenderloins you cook to temp, so once the meat reaches 145 you pull them to rest for half an hour. It took about 2-2.5 hours at 220-230 degrees grill temp. I used apple since I did both the brats and the tenderloins at the same time. I also trimmed the tails from the tenderloins and threw them on but they only take an hour or so and are good for snacking on.

I coated the tenderloins with a light coating of maple syrup before putting the rub on. Was a bit lazy and didn’t make my rub, used the Weber KC rub and wish I had used mine instead but they came out pretty darn good.

Nobody who wants a political future is going for this dumpster fire. Even if they agree with Trump’s beliefs, Trump won’t be around to protect them from the fallout of the things they have to say to defend them.

Ben Carson. No political career and doesn’t really want one. Meek enough to willingly stand beside Trump. Can make money off the side either way-he’s an independent entrepreneur. Can be a good “family values” person, a bridge to the Religious Right when needed. Makes Trump impeachment proof because no Republicans would want to elevate this guy to the Presidency no matter what Trump does or says.

More news from Sweden:
‘Suspicious object’ found at Swedish nuclear plant

Police were investigating on Monday after a suspicious item was found near a Swedish nuclear power station.

The object was discovered just before 3pm on Monday by sniffer dogs taking part in a joint police and military exercise at the Oskarshamn nuclear plant in south-eastern Sweden.

“Both our and the Armed Forces’ dogs reacted to a parcel that was not part of the exercise,” police spokesperson Jimmy Modin told the Aftonbladet tabloid.

“We then took it to the side and x-rayed it. It has not been possible to determine its contents despite this, and for that reason is is being treated as a dangerous object,” he added.

There’s dumb stuff that people do at National Parks. And then there’s truly spectacular dumb stuff.

You know, there’s the ordinary dumb stuff, like getting drunk and engaging in vandalism or other damage to park property or endangering wildlife. We saw that at Death Valley last week as 3 people were arrested for vandalizing a section of Death Valley that is off limits to the general public because it is special habitat for a very rare fish found nowhere else on the planet (and one of those fish was found dead).

Truly spectacular? How about the couple that decided to “save” a bison calf by putting it in the back of their SUV.

There’s run of the mill stupidity like getting too close to the wildlife, which can gore, maim, or kill people. Bears or bison look friendly and gentle, right up until they charge you. We’ve all seen those videos. Heck, I’ve been caught in a bison jam with a bunch of other cars as 100+ bison are trying to use the road to get away from a perceived threat (a bear). But I’ve also seen the stupidity of folks trying to spot bears (and their cubs) by getting out of their cars to see up close. Traffic jams and the potential for a deadly confrontation.

This is what park rangers have to put up with on a daily basis.

Don’t feel good about Sinead either. I assume she has a cell phone and friends who she can contact if she needs some assistance. And going out at 6am Sunday is going out at a time when most people are asleep or at home. Even Sunday joggers and bikers prefer going out later when they can get a bit of breakfast and find people out going to church. And was Sinead visiting or living there? The difference can be critical. Locals know the places in town to not go to when it’s practically deserted-a visitor may not be all that aware.

I just think of all of the years we have showered with, used restrooms with and such with people who we did not know was transgender. Nobody talked about such a phenomenon at all, and there were no rules about it thereby. Yet nobody seems to bring up an incident where a transgender person assaulted someone in such a shared space.

What the law is really about is the fact that LBQT can no longer be shamed into silence by religious bigotry or public embarrassment. That people who aren’t right-wing Christian can’t be silence. Laws like this are designed to rebuild by force the closet where non-comforming people used to have to hide. People stop caring-“we will make them surrender to our will”.
