Gotta love Krugman:

The news media will, I fear, try their best to pretend that the contrast isn’t what it is. We’ll hear endless explanations of why Trump’s vanity, ignorance, and lack of moral fiber somehow prove his “authenticity”, which Clinton somehow lacks. And maybe that will stick with voters. But I don’t think it will. In the end, it will be a race between a tough, smart lady and someone who is obviously a yuge, um, Antonin Scalia School of Law. And voters will notice.

State Rep. Kenneth Havard was discussing the bill, which would raise the minimum age for exotic dancers from 18 to 21, when he also threw out there that he’d like the dancers to remain under 160 pounds, according to The Huffington Post. Havard also suggested the maximum age for a stripper under the law should be 28.

A Clinton/Sanders ticket is even less likely than an Obama/Clinton ticket was back in ‘08. Back then, the race was close enough and contentious enough that a “unity ticket” was viewed as a real idea.

Here? 3/4 of Bernie’s supporters have said they’ll support Hillary in November, and most of those who won’t are deadenders who bring nothing to the party but a shitload of baggage.

Question — what powers does the President have to determine who is the leader of a political party in the United States?

The President, ironically enough, is the leader of the country’s Executive Branch, but not of his own party; that rests with the party chairman. Party machinery is kept separate from the actual candidates, who have more than enough work on their plates without having to deal with the operations of running a political party. While the party officials may respect the President, and give his or her advice some weight, as noted by several other posters here, they have no actual power to materially affect anything related to the party.

He’s also convincing a lot of them to hold off on throwing their support to her by convincing them that he still has a chance with some miracle 11th hour reprieve, either from California or from the superdelegates. Dr. Sleepy McPyramid got run off for thinking that way.

Since the former neurosurgeon has taken up the role of working on Donald Trump’s vice presidential team, he has suggested that the candidate may pick a Democratic running mate, dropped she-who-must-not-be-named Sarah Palin as a potential pick and earlier generally questioned a number of the presumptive nominee’s habits from his Twitter use to lack of pragmatism.

So he was off the VP team in a hurry.

In the meantime though he’s lighting fires he’s going to have a difficult time extinguishing even if he wants to, and he’s shown almost no inclination that he will want to. The only ray of hope is behind the scenes reports that he’s been calling Democratic colleagues and trying to reassure them that he’ll fight Trump when the time comes. What makes me less than hopeful right now is that he made similar assurances to Harry Reid that his people wouldn’t let the Nevada Convention turn into an embarrassing shit show, but his people were instrumental in lying to his supporters there and whipping up the unwarranted rage that turn it into a near riot.

The only thing I believe about Sanders anymore is that he’s unbelievably reckless and naive, at this point it’s a crapshoot whether he tries to calm things down after California or pours more gasoline on the fire.

Polls right now show that 60-80% (depending upon the state) of Sanders supporters will vote Hillary if she’s the nominee, so I’m not sweating it so much. If the DNC gives him a say in the party platform, even if he doesn’t give a very enthusiastic endorsement, then most will have no problem switching over to her.

A lot of those still holding on are doing so because they’re holding out hope that he can somehow beat the odds. If he continues to argue that he can still win past that point, the damage that will be done will mostly be to his credibility and to his reputation.

It’s not going to happen. The lawsuit is just another cynical attempt to sell the “rigged system” narrative. Independents are welcome to vote for Sanders or Clinton here.

No Party Preference Information
Voting in Presidential Primary Elections
Voters who registered to vote without stating a political party preference are known as No Party Preference (NPP) voters. NPP voters were formerly known as “decline-to-state” or “DTS” voters.

For presidential elections: NPP voters, unless they choose otherwise (see below), will receive a “non-partisan” ballot that does not include presidential candidates. A nonpartisan ballot contains only the names of candidates for voter-nominated offices and local nonpartisan offices and measures.

Voting in the June 7, 2016, Presidential Primary Election
An NPP voter will receive a non-partisan ballot, which will have no presidential candidates listed.

However, upon request, an NPP voter can instead vote the presidential ballot of the following parties:

American Independent Party
Democratic Party
Libertarian Party
Why? Each political party has the option of allowing NPP voters to vote in their presidential primary election. 135 days before the election, political parties must notify the Secretary of State’s office whether or not they will allow NPP voters to vote in their presidential primary election. The above three parties notified the Secretary of State that they will allow NPP voters to request their party’s presidential ballot for the June 7, 2016, Presidential Primary Election.

How to request a party ballot? The NPP voter may ask their county elections office or poll worker, at their polling place, for a ballot for one of the above three parties. An NPP voter may not request more than one party’s ballot.

A vote-by-mail voter is who is also an NPP voter may contact their county elections office or complete and mail or deliver a vote-by-mail ballot application to their county elections office. The vote-by-mail ballot application must arrive by May 31, 2016.

The following three parties notified the Secretary of State that they have chosen not to allow NPP voters to request their party’s presidential ballot participate in their presidential primary election:

Republican
Green
Peace & Freedom

If an NPP voter wants to vote for a presidential candidate in the Republican, Green, or Peace and Freedom party, the NPP voter must re-register to vote with one of those parties by May 23, 2016. To register online go to registertovote.ca.gov.

Constitutional Amendments
Restoring a 218-year-old technological wonder

Sean D. Kearns (ENG’94), who was the commanding officer of the Constitution from July 2013 until this past August, says the ship’s original hull was its secret weapon of sorts. More than two feet thick and covered with copper to protect it from wood-borers like crustaceans, it could withstand blows from 18-pound iron cannonballs. The hull is the reason the undefeated warship is called Old Ironsides.

“Cannonballs would either stick in the side or they would bounce off,” says Kearns. “She could go into battle with her huge armament and dish out punishing fire and take a lot of punishment in return without being damaged.” […]

The Humphreys Frigates were way overgunned for their rate, too. The Constitution was rated 44, but had 60 long guns on board when commissioned, including 30 24-pounders, which the British had rejected as being too slow to fire. They thought they could do more damage with 18-pounders by getting in more shots. The various frigate duels of the War of 1812 proved them wrong….

They were designed to go toe-to-toe with the biggest, baddest ships of the line the Royal Navy could muster, and live to tell about it. The Americans knew they couldn’t compete on sheer firepower or size; they didn’t have the budget. So they built smaller, faster, durable vessels that could load up with heavy guns and still choose their own fights.

Of course, this earned her the nickname Old Ironsides, and if the Wikipedia article is to be believed, is partly responsible for why the British started telling their fleet commanders not to let frigates go after the American ships alone. Not that that helped much when the Constitution doubled off the Cyane and Levant later in the war.

I’ve wondered what it was like to be a military commander back in the days before telegraph, and particularly radio. A ship’s commander truly was “Master and Commander”, getting orders before he sailed, and then responsible for executing them without knowing what was happening back on land. They were a special breed of men.

No, the Constitution and her sisters were designed to outfight any other frigates they might encounter. They would have stood a decent chance one on one with a old 4th rate ship-of-the-line (64 guns), and could have done serious damage to a 3rd rate (74 guns). But a 2nd rate (80-96 guns) or a 1st rater (98 gun and above) would have turned any American frigate into matchwood in relatively short order.

FTFY.

It certainly reframes the barbaric cruelties Da’esh and others are capable of when you see what “we” (collectively, in the “civilized” West) were capable of a mere 100 years ago. I mean, thousands of people showed up and treated it like a freaking picnic, to the point of sending postcards.

That doesn’t excuse Da’esh—sadly, it only proves that as a species we haven’t yet lost our bloodlust and capacity for cruelty towards those whom we fear or see as “other.”

That bit in bold was very much downplayed as being a lie by one Nina Turner, Sanders campaign person. No chairs thrown…no near riot. And the police were brought in to intimidate the Sanders crowd. Others downplayed it all too saying it was the DNC using the media to paint Bernie and his supporters in a bad light. Of course it was never said, but I am sure they thought it was work of Evil Clinton War Machine.

Besides, Barber Boxer flipped off the Bernie Supporters as she walked offstage. So, nothing is as bad as that.

It was the toe-to-toe part I was objecting to. I should have been clearer about that. Toe-to-toe in those days would have meant broadside to broadside and a frigate unable to escape a ship of the line’s broadside would generally be doomed. The whole point of big but fast frigates was that they’d be able to avoid being drawn close to ships of the line while being able to wreck anything below the size of a 3rd rater.

I think she probably could’ve taken a broadside from a first-rate and not been doomed; Commander Preble certainly seemed to think so, when a smaller British frigate challenged him by impersonating an 88-gun ship of the line. That being said, yes, if she stayed around and tried to fight, it’s probable that the volume of gunfire would’ve reduced her rigging and upper decks to splinters fairly quickly.

I know, right? My dad was a carpenter, but I’m having a hard time envisioning them.

The German side of my family came to north central Ohio (around Bucyrus) in the late 1800s. They had 205 acres that was wooded with native trees. They cleared the area to farm and took all the wood and built their house out of it. I never did hear how the hell they did all that other than by hand and horse.

The house they constructed was built out of rough hewn white oak boards approx 16 by 20 for the main floor runners, and slightly less 6 x 10 uprights (what would be 2 x 4 today). The house caught fire once and all they did was scrape some char off the main oak frame and rebuilt and replastered the wall that was damaged.

That house is still standing as far as I know. Probably couldn’t tear the damn thing down if you tried. it was its own USS Constitution. That place could stand in a tornado. They had cold cellar storage in the basement they’d all go down to in a storm.

The whole area was composed of German families and they all helped each other build their homes, clear the woods, etc. Hard to believe how those people all pulled together and did all they did to build a life in America. It is also how they built ships, etc. And they did much of it so well.

Yeah you’re not fucking helping at all. If Bernie was just using remaining in the race to talk about his pet issues, that’s one thing but when his campaign manager says that Trump (who is a dishonest liar) is right about Clinton, he needs to get the fuck out now. I

I think he’s in a “No woman thwarts ME!!” phase right now or at least the campaign manager is. when they get to California Bernie’s manager can pal around with Upchuck. They share an attitude about women.

mr. klys’s grandparents ended up owning a historic mansion in NC. I was just reading an article about it today because his aunt has finally sold it to a developer who is planning on trying to turn it into a wedding/meeting venue. (His aunt bought out his dad’s half years ago.)

They had a photo tour of the house, which has been incredibly neglected but serves as kind of a time capsule. On one of the bookshelves were still family photos from his grandmother, including one of mr. klys in middle school.

Also included in the photo tour was the mummified possum in the attic.

re: #154 ObserverArt

I have a cousin that lives down in the New Orleans area in what’s known as a “Cajun Cottage”. They were made out of the boards of the old barges that came down river, since it wasn’t worth it to take them back up river. I was helping her do some remodeling and it was damn near impossible to cut that wood. Thick old oak, seasoned out for 100 years+, smoked a saws-all blade in a heartbeat.

Also, nothing in that house was in anyway plumb, square or level to anything else in the house. She wanted to do a striped wallpaper, we convinced her that was a REALLY bad idea.

re: #124 thedopefishlives

They were designed to go toe-to-toe with the biggest, baddest ships of the line the Royal Navy could muster, and live to tell about it. The Americans knew they couldn’t compete on sheer firepower or size; they didn’t have the budget. So they built smaller, faster, durable vessels that could load up with heavy guns and still choose their own fights.

They could mess with any *frigate* the Royal Navy had. Probably not with a 64-gun ship-of-the-line. I don’t think they ever encountered a Royal Navy “razee” in combat. A “razee” was a two-decker (usually 64- or 72- gun) that had had a deck removed to make a large 44- of 50- gun frigate. Generally not as nimble as a purpose built frigate, but some were pretty good sailing ships while others were not.

The benefit of having a lot of old growth timber. Some things take time, and you can’t clearcut and replant and get the same thing.

Yew wood for bows comes from trees grown for centuries in the shadow of much larger trees. No sun = slow growth, and few suckers. No suckers = no knots. No knots = good bow wood.

England used up all its bow-quality Yew long before they stopped needing longbows, so they sourced it from high altitudes in Spain and Italy, where they could get Yew from previously undisturbed forests.

I just got around to doing some maintenance on my workbench. It was my dad’s, and at least 60 years old. Possibly the wood for the top was something my grandfather had before that. The front is a 4” x 12” x 6’ slab of redwood. It was horribly dry and splintery and I finally really looked at it a couple years ago and decided to sand it a bit and oil it, and have repeated the procedure a couple times since then. It is cut and banged and dented as workbenches will be, but the wood is now really beautiful. :)
