I’ve queued this video to start at the section where the Fox & Friends right wing shills play a clip of Hillary Clinton accurately quoting what Donald Trump said, then sit there and listen approvingly as Trump denies it, then repeats the exact thing he just denied.

Man, these people.

I think there’s a really good book about that, The Warmth of Other Suns. It’s crazy to think about but my grandmother’s high school in late 1920’s Pittsburgh was more diverse than my father’s here in Northern Va in the early early 60’s.

It always amuses me seeing the Beatles in their early years and then seeing them in the late 60’s when they started growing their hair out and beards. Kind of reminds me of the photos of my Dad and uncles. Clean shaved high school kids who grew beards by decade’s end. I guess the same could be said about me myself.

I think Robert Caro has already done a great service to the historical cause of LBJ with his ongoing multi-volume biography, which is excellent. The last volume ended with the Kennedy assassination; I pray that Caro (who’s now around 80 years old) stays in good health to finish up the last piece of the work. Highly recommended reading, lengthy though it is.

Sanders (Vt.) is certain that he can become the Democratic nominee. But regardless of the outcome, he said he plans to go to the convention and seek what he considers critical changes to the rules. Sanders complained Sunday, as he has many times before, that closed primaries disenfranchise millions of people who may wish to vote for a Democratic candidate. Closed primaries are contests held in states that allow only registered party members, in this case Democrats, to cast ballots.

Even if the Vermont senator persuades the Democratic Party to embrace more open primaries in its platform at the party’s national convention in July, individual states would have to enact the changes. Those who tend to think that teachers should be armed in their classrooms have no idea about the types of students that can pop up in a classroom. During my career, I taught students who had been found guilty of grant theft auto, burglary, breaking and entering, selling drugs, gang activity involving guns, and other felonies. Some of my students readily admitted to me that the only reason they were in school at all was because it was a mandated portion of their probation program. They would rather have been anywhere else except school. Just imagine one of the the aforementioned students getting his/her hands on a teacher’s gun, especially if it is an expensive one. Two of my former students are serving lengthy sentences in prison for murder, one is female, the other is male. The female killed her girlfriend because she decided to leave her. The male was taking part in robbing a store and killed the store owner in the process. A third student was sentenced to serve over 40 years in prison for burning down churches in Middle GA. If these kinds of students can be attending school in a small, “conservative” town like the one where I worked, just imagine what kinds attend schools in larger towns and cities.

Harrison to his credit did a lot for Civil War vets. Cleveland even though he was a draft dodger (literally paid for a replacement), he fought pensions. The last Republican I can see myself considering voting for is Ike but Adlai Stevenson was a good guy and candidate. Plus Ike had Nixon.

Teddy and Bryan never ran against each other. Teddy’s 1904 candidate was Alton Parker, a little known circuit judge and conservative Democrat. I’m not huge on Bryan either. Appreciate his economic contributions but the hostility to evolution, defense of the KKK at the 1924 convention(my username’s namesake Al Smith was an opponent of the KKK though my user name is more in tribute to Humphrey), and the all around fanaticism plus messiah delusions are why I’m not a big Bryan fan either.

Many Americans already think teachers “make too much money,” which is why they tend to be against giving them raises. In GA, we could not bargain collectively for salary increases because the state constitution prohibits it, but it still never stops some uneducated tools here from claiming that the teachers’ unions here play a huge role in determining what teachers salaries are. The only reason the lie persists is because these tools have consumed right-wing media which pushes the idea that every teacher is a union member, and unions are bloodsuckers determined to suck every penny out of taxpayers’ pockets. Even in states that allow teachers to unionize, many citizens never think that the problems with the pension system isn’t with the teachers who have paid their contributions into it but with state lawmakers not holding up their end of the bargain. Some states are having problems hiring teachers, and I think if some of the politicians, newsreaders and others keep demonizing them, the problem will become worse. I’m always surprised at those who wouldn’t teach for any reason and always seem to think they know what it is like to teach when they don’t.

If he waits even one week then Washington DC votes, and the 46% black population there will put a fucking exclamation point on exactly how and why he lost these primaries. Hillary is going to run laps around him there. If he waits for that to happen he’ll have lost his very last chance to appear even slightly magnanimous in defeat.

I mean, he should’ve dropped out after New York, or at the latest a week later when he lost 4 out of 5 New England States. But if he lets the DC results come in without conceding first he’s going to end this thing looking like a scalded dog.

Nah, it’s all good. 1908 is an interesting race. Taft was definitely conservative but also far more secular than Bryan who was progressive but very religious. Taft is given credit for enforcing a lot of the TR era reforms but I don’t think Taft would have implemented them on his own right.

Found a very old professional directory with biographies and everything and my great grandpa is described as a supporter of the GOP. Wonder who he liked for president. I would suspect he was a wet- He was a German immigrant and I’ve found evidence of his father belonging to a society opposed to prohibition. He worked in banking. Wouldn’t shock me if he knew Andrew Mellon or had some connections to him. In any case, his son, my grandfather was a staunch liberal and indirectly the biggest influence on my liberalism. It’s funny how that works out. His daughter in law, OTOH my grandmother had a great grandfather and grand uncle who were postmasters during the administrations of Buchanan and Cleveland and were Irish-Catholic Democrats.

One guy was saying that since no money exchanged hands that they were not guilty of having committed any crime. He went on to claim that they could have been going there to “help” the victims escape prostitution. No way. They went to that Best Western thinking they were going to get with some young girls. The problem was that they never expected they were talking with law enforcement officers the entire time. Even if one of the guys talked about his wife and family all of the time, he still had a secret he was hiding from them, the pastor, and his fellow church members, and that secret came back and bit him in the *ss. As far as I’m concerned, the best thing that could happen to these two guys is that they’re tried and convicted and given long prison sentences because it’s past the time to stop giving them a free pass because they’re alleged Christians and family values persons. Real family values persons don’t only talk about how much they love their families, they act like it, which does not include trying to meet young girls for sex at hotels/motels.

I do like looking at the ancestors as individuals. I actually uncovered some very left wing letters to the editor from one of my grandfather’s older cousins. I was talking with a nephew of my dad’s mom who knew my great grandfather on that side pretty well and he said that he hated Truman which surprised me since I figured the old man was a Democrat but maybe he was one of these who felt that old Harry couldn’t hold a feather to FDR. My mom’s parents and grandparents were definitely Democrats though. Immigrant union coal miners, that’s Democratic territory and my mom’s mom has talked about how FDR, John L. Lewis, and Jesus Christ were the most popular people in their home.

I’m disappointed to see that my brother’s got a little bit of BB in him. But in another way I am glad he’s actually engaged in the election and I am glad that unlike some BBs, he knows that Trump is vile. I won’t push too hard on it. He’s got a lot of shit he’s going through. It is ironic though that he supports the candidate that benefits the most from the caucuses and when I explained caucuses to him, he thought it was a load of shit. I think he just wants a candidate that has strong views. I’ll cut some slack. I was like that in my first election I really focused on too albeit younger.

True, and they should not be in the classroom. When I began teaching in the early 1970s, there were few instances of teachers preying on students sexually that I heard of/read about. I retired in 2009, and now it seems that every week I’m reading of some teacher who has had sex with his/her student. There was a case in LA recently in which a guy had sex with one of his students and married her shortly after she graduated from high school. He was being prosecuted for sexually molesting her, but it was announced last month that the state would not prosecute him. I’ve never understood why any teacher would view a student as a sexual object. Many of mine got on my last nerve because they were so immature, so I looked at them as exactly what they were—-children.

Good thoughts appreciated Lizard friends. I’ve done…something to my neck. It’s not majorly painful, more like a minor annoyance. I have been working a lot lately and been pretty busy so I’m thinking that it combined with the mild lower back pain I’m experiencing is probably a result of that.

I like to think I’m too young to be breaking down but I’m 34 now and I know it’s just a matter of time before I get to that point.

I watched All The Way last night which focused on the battle to get the Civil Rights Act enacted after Kennedy’s death. During the filibuster, a Southern Senator argued that the South’s black population should be resettled so that they were evenly distributed across the nation, by force if necessary I guess. Commonly, children help clean up the classroom at the end of the day. That doesn’t mean that Japanese schools don’t have janitorial staff, etc.

It’s a group thing. Japanese culture so elevates the group over the individual that this has to be instilled early and constantly reinforced.

My takeaway from living in Japan is that the young people are more mature in some ways and more responsible than similar age American children. However, they pay a price for it in other ways.

We vote for politicians’ platforms, and if we’re smart, can tease apart what in their stump presence is posture and what is bone-deep conviction.
We expect to be at least be slightly disappointed in their execution of policy. That’s reality and if you pay attention, you can get an idea of how a politician is likely to govern and vote accordingly.
And yet in this cycle, we are trying instead to tease apart what in Trump’s platform is cynical showmanship and what is in grave earnest.
And some people are willing to vote for the creature based on how seriously they take his threats because they have a weirdly contrived hatred of his likely strongest opponent.

I’m not panicking, but the heady mix of emotions I have while getting my daily news fix makes life surreal.

FLATWOODS, Ky. (WSAZ) — A city ordinance saying people in Flatwoods would have to use bathrooms based on the gender on their birth certificate passed in a special vote Saturday morning.

Members of the Flatwoods community attended the meeting speaking to the council on their stance for or against the ordinance before council voted to pass the ordinance 5-0.

One council member, Ray Sloan chose not vote on the ordinance.

Councilman Gary Tomblyn introduced the ordinance in a special meeting last Thursday.

The ordinance only applies to bathrooms and locker rooms at government buildings in Flatwoods, including the city’s municipal building, as well as the city park and city pool. It will not affect private businesses, but Tomblyn also wants it to apply to all schools in Flatwoods.

The school district says nope:

Russell Independent Schools Superintendent Sean Horne says regardless of what city council does, it won’t lead to any changes at schools in Flatwoods, because they’re governed by the board of education, not the city government.

“It’s not going to change how we conduct business in this school district,” Horne said. “My board and I are on the same page. We believe we need to do what’s best for our kids.”

When withdrawal from school occurred, family owed money on tuition. Can’t release transcripts until release. Lawsuit only occurred because they didn’t want to pay the money IMO.

The school had an internal Culture and Climate committee a few years ago that I was a part of. Handled an internal response to many forms of bullying, as effective as we could. Really focused on racial and homophobic harassment. I felt we did as good a job as we could. An administration that authorizes this committee, and gives it power would only be accused of fostering racial harassment by idiots.

Shit still happens, okay. In the meantime, a new School Life and Culture committee has been created to be more active, proactive, and powerful than the former committee. I am also a member of that committee, as well as some members of the School Board of Trustees and others from the community. Among them, an individual that works with issues of diversity at a major corporation in the southeast, a former guidance counselor at a “Majority-minority” High School(My HS Guidance counselor), and the lead DJ at the city’s Hip-Hop radio station. The school is taking this very seriously. And while there are good people calling out discrimination and racism, in this case they have just hitched their wagon to the wrong horse.

The Supreme Court has thrown out a death sentence handed to a black man in Georgia because prosecutors improperly kept African-Americans off the jury that convicted him of killing a white woman.

The justices ruled 7-1 Monday in favor of death row inmate Timothy Tyrone Foster in underscoring the importance of rules they laid out in 1986 to prevent racial discrimination in the selection of juries.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court that Georgia “prosecutors were motivated in substantial part by race” when they struck African-Americans from the jury pool.

But the court did nothing to limit lawyers’ discretionary decisions to reject potential jurors, a practice that the late Thurgood Marshall once said would allow racial discrimination to persist in jury selection,

The outcome probably will enable Foster to win a new trial, 29 years after he was sentenced to death.

Justice Clarence Thomas dissented, saying he would have respected the decisions of state judges who sided with prosecutors and rejected Foster’s claims.

I have just returned from the annual trek to the provincial capital for the pro forma health tests for foreign teachers. There is only one place we can go for these tests, and from our university that means a five hour bus trip each way, and an overnight stay. But, on the bright side, the university pays for all of it, including meals.

Got some new furniture delivered Friday, which was great, but they forgot/couldn’t find/neglected to deliver the bureau that I also purchased some weeks ago.

Talked to the store and the warehouse Friday and neither seemed to have a sense of urgency about it. Waiting to hear from them today. Obviously, “mistakes were made” happens, and I don’t want to over-react. But I hope they seem more on the case than they were Friday.

As for BSHS, demographically it reminded me of my own high school in Illinois, except BSHS is a much nicer facility. I know that Kentucky gets a lot of stereotyping as a state, but we found Fayette County’s schools and teachers to be very good. I’m sure the same is true of LCHS and that its community will benefit from the trauma of this moment as your new committee works to re-enforce the policies of the original committee.

That’s very true. But the prosecutors led with what they thought were the strongest cases. With these failing to get convictions, the rest of the cases look just as bleak.

And it’s yet another reason why minorities see the justice system as fixed - the outcomes are predetermined with law enforcement getting benefit of doubt even before the grand jury sees any evidence. Prosecutors who work closely with law enforcement are going to give law enforcement the benefit of doubt, and judges often are biased in favor of law enforcement as well. Throw in juries that are selected often with favorable views towards law enforcement, and it’s a stacked deck. Blue lives matter.

But the lives of those being policed don’t matter nearly so much, and the tactics and training leaves much to be desired. Cop killings are down, but the media treats every one of those as a sign that the apocalypse is happening. Yet there’s no way to adequately track how many people are killed by cops every day. Because it really does happen pretty much daily.

Some of those are justified - but there’s a significant number that aren’t (where the individual is unarmed, let alone ones where the individual is mentally ill).

My opinion, which I stated on Facebook, is that the armed forces have different functions in Europe and America.

In Europe the armed forces are about national security, protecting the nation. Because unlike America they actually do have a credible threat in Russia. They can’t afford to fuck around.

In the US the armed forces is about economics. It’s about filling the bottom lines of large corporations and making sure tax money is spread around to provide ‘private sector jobs’ to the nation. Since America is protected by two oceans they have no threatening neighbours.

Also I think the American armed forces still suffer from the heavy hand of Robert McNamara. McNamara tried to make war ‘rational’. To him running a war was like running an assembly line. It could and should be subject to measurement and calculation. These things can help but the core of war is psychological. It can be known but not measured.

This is the reasoning behind body counts, throw weights and other military minutiae. The idea is that you can somehow measure your way to victory.

Between these two things the US military, in my opinion, doesn’t get bang for its buck. Its power is less than it could be and its effectiveness is limited considering its size.

So, NYPD officer who previously made news sleepwalking and assaulting a woman, has now gotten himself into DUI trouble. Again. He crashed his car into a bunch of parked cars before flipping his own.

Police say behind the wheel was Donnelly - and this is not the first time he has found himself on the wrong side of the law.

The New York Post obtained video of him leaving a Bronx building moments after he allegedly attacked a woman in her apartment in 2014. Donnelly runs out to the street and try to get back inside the building, only to be locked out. Prosecutors say he was drunk when he broke into that woman’s apartment, and repeatedly punched her. Donnelly says he was sleepwalking.

Donnelly was charged with assault and burglary in the 2014 incident. On Sunday morning, he was charged with DWI. Donnelly suffered minor injuries. No one else was hurt in the crash.

He was released on his own recognizance and is expected back in court next month.

He was released on bail.

Bail is meant to assure that the suspect shows for court appearances, but it’s also not recommended when the person poses a threat to the community.

It’s clear that he poses a threat, mostly from what sounds like a pretty nasty drinking problem. This is a guy who has a badge and gun.

He should have neither. There’s no way to know how much of his judgment is impaired when on the job, and this latest incident goes to show that he can’t be trusted to be a member of law enforcement.

F-22 components are manufactured in more than 2 dozen congressional districts. The manufacturer set it up that way deliberately so that more than 2 dozen members of congress would be highly incentivized to insist the military purchase more than the Pentagon even wants. F-22 components are manufactured in more than 2 dozen congressional districts. The manufacturer set it up that way deliberately so that more than 2 dozen members of congress would be highly incentivized to insist the military purchase more than the Pentagon even wants. I was taken to a Rothko retrospective when I was young. His shapes seemed to stay the same through the years, but the colors grew darker and darker. I almost laughed out loud when I read at the end that he had committed suicide. Now I’ve felt bad about that for almost as long as he lived.

There is a huge industrial complex built around doing just that. The fundy speaker circuit I have mentioned is just a small example. Based on my observations in Lubbock, where 8-10 such churches will each have a different highly publicized out-of-town speaker in any given week, I would guess there are several thousand people on the circuit, collecting fees that run into the thousands, as well as free meals and hotels. Some of them, especially Baptist churches, also pass the plate for a “love offering” for the speaker. They have to pay their own bar tabs though and, yes, I have seen more than one of them do so.

People have short memories. The “Canadian Army Trophy” used to be a NATO tank gunnery competition during the Cold War. It began in 1963, ending in 1991. The US first participated in 1977. The US did not win the competition until 1987, and that was it’s only victory.
