Lindsey Graham Sneaks Onto the Trump Train

Supporting “a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot”
Politics • Views: 47,845

Imagine my overwhelming surprise that even Lindsey Graham, who called Donald Trump “crazy” and “a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot” just a few months ago, is now bailing out of #NeverTrump and joining the #GoTrumpGo movement.

(CNN)Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of Donald Trump’s fiercest critics, is now calling on Republicans to support their presumptive nominee.

Graham urged GOP donors at a private fundraiser Saturday in Florida to unite behind Trump’s campaign and stressed the importance of keeping likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton from the White House. The fundraiser was hosted by former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Al Hoffman, a former Republican National Committee finance chairman who also co-chaired Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential bid.”He did say that we need to get behind him,” Teresa Dailey, a prominent Florida Republican fundraiser who attended the private event, told CNN on Sunday.

At this rate, poor Erick Erickson is going to be the sole surviving member of #NeverTrump before long. Never let it be said that Republicans actually stick to their principles. Apparently being “a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot” isn’t a serious impediment to leading the Republican Party.

Just a couple of weeks ago, here’s the song Graham was singing:

It was never going to be #NeverTrump. Not when #StopHillary was the ultimate goal, regardless of who the GOP nominee was going to be.

They’ll all line up against Hillary. Just watch. Even those NRO shills like Jonah Goldberg. Oh, they’ll claim that they’re not going to support Trump, but watch them do everything they can to stop Hillary, which amounts to the same exact thing.

He is a shameless and continual liar, nothing that he ever says can be counted on, and yet he stands a serious chance of being elected, on the basis of - what? The positions he’s backing away from?

I mean Bernie’s run an admirable campaign as far as results are concerned for a self described Democratic socialist. He’s also delusional as hell about the white working class too.

Republicans in their gut know they’re losing power, and when they lose an election bad enough, it’ll be over for them (they’ll have to change to win again). They’d elect someone that would sacrifice their daughters to the volcano god if they thought it would keep them in power a little while longer.

re: #28 Belafon

Blocked a bunch of Bernie fans today for pushing that kind of nonsense. Even if Hillary spotted them 2 million votes, Bernie still loses. Even if you change the rules to the most favorable one for Bernie, he still loses.

There’s no scenario in which Bernie wins with the states/votes/delegates/superdelegates .

Now, if you want to claim that he got more votes because of caucuses, you’re still talking BS, because the caucuses are even less democratic than the superdelegate system. Only 3% of voters come out for caucuses. That’s pathetically low. And you can’t/shouldn’t extrapolate caucus turnout to anything else given that the caucus is a self-selected bunch of folks committed to a candidate; Hillary decided to keep her spending down on those states to focus on the big delegate states plus November - which is where her focus has been since Super Tuesday.

Now, the Bernie campaign says that he’s better matchup against Trump, but he doesn’t have the money in the bank to do the general race, and his campaign has been winding down the GOTV, even in CA. That’s hardly what you want to be doing when every vote counts and you need to get Democrats to turn out in huge numbers to try and take back seats in Congress and all the down ticket races.

Once Bernie drops out, you’ll see Hillary’s numbers climb. Because that’s what happens once the nominees are all that’s left in each party. Then we’ll be watching for the convention and the “bump” following the convention - whether there’s a VP bump, a dead cat bounce, or otherwise it resets the game.

WASHINGTON—With Donald Trump’s two remaining GOP rivals suspending their candidacies and clearing a path for the billionaire businessman to assume the Republican presidential nomination, reports indicated Wednesday that, well, hoo boy, here we go. “So I guess that’s that—we’re off and running here,” said Oregon resident Carl Jacobs, raising his eyebrows and drawing in a deep breath as he echoed the sentiments of millions of Americans across the country who confirmed there’s no turning back now following the real estate mogul’s decisive victory in Indiana and that, boy, this is really just the beginning when you think about it. “The train has left the station, and we are on our way. The fact that the Constitution outlines a process for amending itself signals to me that the Framers intended for it be a living document. Originalism is practically a self-negating legal doctrine.

And in major and important news…. MLB to change the strike zone and the intentional walk rule….

The committee agreed on a motion to effectively raise the lower part of the strike zone to the top of the hitter’s knees, sources said. The current rules stipulate that the zone begins at “the hollow beneath the kneecap,” but the change is a reaction to a trend by umpires to call strikes on an increasing number of pitches below the knees..

The change in the intentional-walk rule would end the traditional practice of requiring the pitcher to lob four balls outside the strike zone. Instead, a team could signify it wants to issue an intentional walk, and the hitter would be immediately sent to first base, sources said.

Just how mobbed up is Donald Trump?

From the public record and published accounts…, it’s possible to assemble a clear picture of what we do know. The picture shows that Drumpf’s career has benefited from a decades-long and largely successful effort to limit and deflect law enforcement investigations into his dealings with top mobsters, organized crime associates, labor fixers, corrupt union leaders, con artists and even a one-time drug trafficker whom Drumpf retained as the head of his personal helicopter service.

Now that he’s running for president, I pulled together what’s known - piecing together the long history of federal filings, court records, biographical anecdotes, and research from my and Barrett’s files. What emerges is a pattern of business dealings with mob figures—not only local figures, but even the son of a reputed Russian mob boss whom Drumpf had at his side at a gala Drumpf hotel opening, but has since claimed under oath he barely knows.

Neither Drumpf’s campaign spokesperson, Hope Hicks, nor Jason Greenblatt, the executive vice president and chief legal officer at the Drumpf Organization, responded to several emailed requests for comment on the issues raised in this article.

Is he sure he wants to run an aggressively negative campaign? Plenty of negative ad fodder in this article. He should be careful what he wishes for.

The balls and strikes thing will be a minor change, but the intentional BB is a more significant change since there’s always a chance the catcher mishandles the ball and enables the runners to move up a base. I’ve seen that happen too.

I guess they’ve decided that this will help speed up the game.

They should allow higher strikes to count then. It’s supposed to be up to the chest area of the batter, but the way it is now and has been for many years is no pitch above the catcher’s head is called a strike. Very small strike zones these pitchers have to work with. If they don’t want to call the high strike they should change the rule.

Unbelievable. The Emperors New Clothes has come to life.

I’ll tell you what bothers me most - Hillary Clinton has low favorables, for reasons having very little to do with the woman herself. A lot of it - supposed dishonesty, corruption, etc - comes out of 25 years of fruitless “investigations” by the GOP. The fact that they’ve gone to that well again and again is what registers with people, leaving the vague impression of dishonesty, when the fact that not one has produced evidence of corruption should do the opposite. She’s been consistently the most honest candidate this whole cycle, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

And on the other hand, you have Trump, who lies continually, shamelessly, and outrageously; who changes opinions in a single paragraph; who is transparently a con man - and NOTHING sticks to him. Reagan had a reputation for being Teflon-coated, but at least under it all, Reagan had a sunny, likable personality. Trump? Likable?

Maybe this is talk of Newt being Trump’s running mate is simply Newt trying to get someone to retire his debt (and to finally pay off the vendors he screwed for 4 years).

My favorite thing was hearing that NRO helped Trump with his Supreme Court wishlist and this apparently happened in March while NRO was at the same time pushing NeverTrump. It really shows you that not only is NRO a bigoted shit rag, they’re insincere bigoted shitheads.

Heh, you noticed that too, eh? When I saw that posted here a few days ago I thought of saying something about it, but anymore it just seems to not really matter. The is just so much bullshit on the conservative side that I have more or less decided to ignore it all. I just figure they will go with doing the worst thing they can do. It is now the default setting.

My only hope now is enough people figure out what is going on and start to jump ship.

I posted a comment Saturday about nothing is going to change the Republican party until they are abandoned by their supporters. As long as people put up with this crap from the upper reaches of the party there will be no change. It is up to the little people in the party to send this message. The big folks have done lost their minds…no helping them now. Sad thing is, I don’t see it happening. I guess the people that back them haven’t decided it is bad enough yet. I wonder what bad enough actually will be???

Trump? Likable?

Well yeah, it’s not going to make a difference because she’s a woman.

That whole thing being the most qualified candidate and yet being dismissed by people on both sides as unqualified was pretty predictable, honestly. Sadly.

I’m going to punditize 4 years out. If the GOP loses, they are going to go to more of a proportional system to prevent someone like Trump from running away with the nomination, and if the Dems lose, they are going to go to more of a Winner Take Most system fairly early in the process (after say, 1/4 of the primaries).

If I’m right, I’ll dredge up this post, and if I’m wrong, well, hell, who can predict 4 years out anyhow?

re: #231 HappyWarrior

Yeah I imagine that would be the response. Honestly, there’s some stuff I’ve read about Bernie that the Clinton campaign hasn’t used that the GOP would have a field day with.

I’m thinking Clinton and her staff decided to honor the “no negative campaign” thinking and stuck with it even as Bernie changed up. They probably wish they didn’t from time to time, but in the long run it is best they stuck to the plan as no one can say she treated Bernie badly when he is finally defeated. It leaves the Bernie supporters without a feeling she did him wrong and gives them less to run away from her with.

And it has allowed the Clinton campaign to concentrate on The Trump. I am hoping that in about a month’s time we see them start to roll out the big guns. Trump has already given them plenty of ammo, they just need to start a smart war on how to deliver it all.

I still hope they use outside guns and keep Hillary fairly clean. She just needs to stick to the campaign and only poke him form time to time. He can be counted on to over react as he always does. Then the outside gunners can attack him on the over reaction and toss in some real Trump facts to make the hits more impactful.

He is his own worst enemy. It will be his big boastful mouth that will make people sick of him. Use him against himself…count on him jumping all around and showing his ass.

re: #242 Eclectic Cyborg

Okay I give. Why the fuck would they do that?

They made some noises about wanting to fill diversity goals but others aren’t buying it.

When asked in an interview Monday afternoon why the Sanders campaign choose to invoke the “Right of Review” rule and use it on such a massive scale Jill Yordy, Statewide Coordinator for the Sanders campaign said in an interview “Our campaign looked through the Delegate Selection Plan and did our best to uphold our responsibilities” and “We are doing our best to ensure diversity goals are met. Then there is also the requirement, and our obligation to Bernie Sanders to make sure that the delegates that are going pledged to him are 100% committed to Bernie.”

And Guttenberg isn’t buying the diversity explanation either, saying,”That’s not how its done. You don’t pre-determine who the candidates are by willowing it down to 50 because you don’t know who is going to be elected. Filling out the diversity happens as you are having the elections, not before hand. That’s a horrible excuse for eliminating people and it’s never been done that way. They are creating problems that have never existed before” and “The Sanders campaign is disenfranchising people.”

I think that those who own guns have an obligation to keep guns out of the hands of their kids and should be prosecuted for negligence when their kids gain access to their parents’ guns and kill themselves and/or others. I was proud of our sheriff who locked his butt up because now, he’ll be tried for killing the kid. I’m always amazed at those who can manufacture a reason to let even convicted felons get away with killing a kid, a felon who isn’t even supposed to own a gun in the first place. That they do tells me they don’t really give a sh*t about a kid after s/he is born, and that they are more willing to protect the right of citizens to own guns than the right of a child to live in a home without being killed by the gun-owning significant other of a child’s parent.

I was reading a piece in the NYT today that there is a movement among insurance / safety groups to not use the term “accident” in regards to most car crashes but to instead use the term “crash”. I think the same thing type thing should apply to ‘accidental’ deaths from firearms. Call them what they are, negligent homicide. And bring charges accordingly.

The great Dizzy Dean was not a fan of the intentional base on balls as constituted, and had his own solution. Dizzy said that if he needed to put a batter on base intentionally, rather than throwing four balls out of the zone, “I’d just hit him with the first one.”

To wingnuts responsibility is for other people who do things the wingnuts don’t like. However since the wingnuts are ‘free’ this means they are also free from responsibility.

So they believe they shouldn’t be punished for being irresponsible dumbasses.

“They were for allowing gun club membership cards I believe to be used as a valid ID for a voter for not a student ID even though the latter is something issued by a government entity often. as most universities are public.”

I recall that in Texas, you could use a concealed carry permit ID to vote but not an ID issued by the Veterans Administration or a college ID. The Fifth Circuit upheld the TX Voter ID law with these voter suppression tactics built into it.

I’m highly in favor of insurance requirements for gun owners. With strict liability for injuries/killings caused by the guns. If you have to have insurance to drive a car, it seems logical enough to say that you have to have insurance to own a gun.

There should also be a high standard of training and testing as well.

I want people with firearms to know more about them than which end the bang comes out of.

We do regulate the holy fuck out of cars which is what they ignore. Here’s something that was pissing me off though about the Republicans how they fetishize guns. They were for allowing gun club membership cards I believe to be used as a valid ID for a voter for not a student ID even though the latter is something issued by a government entity often. as most universities are public. I also have to admit I get greatly annoyed seeing politicians pose with guns and also the ones that audition them off.

Here’s how it goes:

Reasonable person: So many people are dying because of guns. Maybe we should make sure anyone buying a gun is eligible?

Gunfucker: LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE KILLED BY CARS, SO WHY DON’T WE BAN THEM?!?

Reasonable person: What? Who said anything about banning guns?

Gunfucker: WHAT PART OF ‘SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED DON’T YOU GET?!?

Reasonable person: Fuck this noise.

I have a niece who has joined what I call a cult. She now refuses to give her Social Security number to any government agency which is stupid because the federal government assigned the SS # in the first place. My sister-in-law is appalled at this nonsense and my niece joining what, after a bit of investigation on my part, I’ve since classified as a sort of sovereign citizens’ group. I offered to buy a car for her a couple month ago, if she would enroll in a legitimate college. So far, she hasn’t taken the offer. I tried to tell her that since she has a kid, there will come a day when her parents won’t be around to help her take care of the kid, but she’s obstinate and seems to think that one day she’ll own her own business and become a very rich person without having to educate herself. My brother already passed away due to cancer in October 2015, so she’s down to one parent. My sister-in-law isn’t in any position to help her, but she remains a true believer in the teachings of the group she has joined. Also, I don’t think being black and a member of a sovereign citizens’ group is a good idea, but she’s beyond listening to reason.

I hope it’s something she grows out of.

It seems to me that Sovereign Citizens are like Libertarians or Ayn Randians - they hear something that clicks with the sense of being ‘different’ that is common to all adolescents - they’re special and more deserving than everyone else, and they shouldn’t be forced to share.

Most folks grow out of it to a greater or lesser extent. Still they do seem to be most appealing to privileged white folks, because it tells them their privilege is what they deserve, not a happy (for them) accident of birth.

It’s the Stern in this paragraph:

The NFL has repeatedly denied that it withheld funding because of objections to Stern, a professor of neurology and neurosurgery and the director of clinical research at Boston University’s CTE Center. But in emails and phone calls documented by congressional investigators, league officials said they believed Stern was biased and his selection marred by a conflict of interest because a grant reviewer had previously appeared on a scientific paper with one of Stern’s colleagues. The NIH ruled that the allegations were unfounded.

Also here:

• The co-chairman of the NFL’s committee on brain injuries, Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, was one of the league’s “primary advocates” opposing Stern, even though Ellenbogen had applied for the same grant and stood to benefit personally. Ellenbogen previously denied to Outside the Lines that he tried to influence the NIH, but the report sharply criticizes his actions.

It’s a landline, but I’m not actually sure that there is a lot AT&T can do. The number is showing up on people’s caller ID (so it won’t look like an ad or robocall or whatever,) but it is not involved in the actual call as far as I know. It is basically not possible to report this to AT&T because you can’t do it on line and when you call you’re on perma-hold. The calls we are getting are from actual people who think they are returning a missed call.

I did file a report with the FCC (who pretty much tells you up front they won’t do anything about it) so if there is any problem that comes out of it I can prove I reported it as ATT recommends on their website.

File this under reasons to love a responsive car and believe the “ultimate driving machine” rhetoric…
On my way to work, in light traffic on 280 at around 10:30am, moving along at about 78 mph in the fast lane. Suddenly I see some guy going about 90 who’d crossed three lanes of traffic and was headed straight for my right fender (black Accord or other mid-size sedan). Having only the retainer wall to welcome me, I hit the brakes, veered left and then right again back into my lane as he swung wide in front of me and barely avoided hitting the wall himself.
Fortunately there was nobody behind me and nobody in front of me for him to hit either, and he raced out of view moments later. I just stayed in my lane and caught my breath for a second…then some guy pulls up alongside on my right, looks at me and smiles, and gives me a big thumbs up for avoiding what would have been a major collision.

And that’s one of a billion problems with Trump. He’s so used to doing things for him. He has Lawyers and Servants and Secretaries who do all the actual work while he just barks orders at them.

If he thinks he can get away with that shit as POTUS he’s got another thing coming.

I see what you did there.

After reading this article, it really isn’t shocking to me that Sanders is trying to subvert the will of Democratic voters by flipping Superdelegates. I know many of you already know this, but in the past, Sanders has shown a disdain for the democratic process if it threatens someone he considers an ideological ally at the time (like the Sandinistas or Castro) He opposed press freedoms for critics of the Sandinista regime in Nicauraga and full-throatily supported the authoritarian and murderous regimes of the Sandinistas and Castro. He’s a Convenient Democrat in every sense of the term.

I know I’m being harsh here, but reading his past remarks all together combined with his recent behavior (seriously fuck off with that Cabinet shit) makes me think he’s almost as despicable as Trump. I’m sure he’s grown from these views, but the fact that he ever held them as an elected official in the first place is a huge bridge for me to cross. Thank God I won’t have to cross that bridge in November.

I signed up to volunteer for Hillary, but all I’ve gotten for it so far is invitations to donate $1 to Hillary (NO I WON’T. I’ve donated much more than that already, and any internet transaction involves a slight degree of risk. Not taking that risk for $1.) I wonder if my area is considered lost to Bernie — or certain to go to Hillary?

I think Hillary’s campaign was seeking $1 donations to lower the average donation amount when Sanders was heavily touting the $27 number. It took them awhile to send me info after I signed up to volunteer.

I’ve been very hesitant to contribute anything to anyone because I don’t want begging phone calls. You give $25 and they practically call back weekly for more. No. Just no.

Asking for $1 is like saying “For less then the cost of a cup of coffee you can provide education and clothing to a starving child.” If you go to give a buck, you’ll probably end up giving more because who only sends $1 when they know damn well campaigns spend hundreds of millions?

If I was only going to send a dollar I’d mail a check (and pay the extra .44 cents in postage) just to see if it got cashed.

Whoever’s doing that on her behalf should stop. Ask for $25. Ask for $50. Ask for $27 if you’re Bernie because it became a talking point. But don’t ask for a dollar. I know homeless people who ask for more than that and they actually need the money.

I remember when I was kid my dad got a rather large bonus one year and donated a chunk of it to a local charity. For years after, they proceeded to BOMBARD him with phone calls and mailers begging him to donate again. It got so bad he went to down to the local office and asked to speak to the person in charge.

He then said very calmly that while he supported the charitys cause he did not appreciate in any way, shape or form their constant attempts to get more money from him and as a result he would never donate to the charity again.

I can’t help but wonder how many non profits shoot themselves in the foot with this kind of crap.

I gave to Obama in 08 and 12. It took me four years to get every Democratic state candidate from Wisconsin to Florida to stop emailing me for money. This year I donate cash at their tables and hope the volunteers aren’t skimming…getting back to my previous post, I think I’ll just write checks to the candidate and shove those into the jars going forward.

You aren’t thinking like a campaign. That dollar donation also gives the campaign, and the Democratic Party going forward, valuable information for the GOTV database. Hypothetically that helps them win elections up and down ticket well into the future. Also, the person who donates one dollar is more likely to donate more later.

Good for him. I wonder how well the bombardment strategy works? I’m inclined to think that it is effective in the short term, and apparently that’s all anyone thinks about any more.

I give them my cell number, which I never answer unless I know who’s calling. (If you call me on my cell, LEAVE A MESSAGE.)

Of course I get multiple emails every day, but even before I donated (and it had been years since I sent them any money), I got multiple emails every week. And I knew I was doomed to more when I pushed that “donate” button.

Maybe if GOTV = Give over teh VALLET! It’s like texting to a campaign - puts your number in their databse.

BTW, I took my MIL to register this morning. She registered as Decline To State. I said “Really?” She said, “Well, I’ll vote Democrat anyway”…DTS…maybe I wasn’t far off when I teased her that she’d hook up with some old hedonist at the retirement home and head to Burning Man before summer’s end.

Texting a campaign doesn’t allow them to verify you are a real person, donating with a check or credit card does. It allows them to target their GOTV efforts much more effectively.

I used to be DTS here in California, voted for Obama that way in the 2008 primary and general. Finally declared as a Democrat when I figured out the only person I was fooling was myself, and that the odds of me voting for a Republican or third party in the future were virtually zero.

Here is my answer commercial idea…

“Is former President Bill Clinton running for President again?”
(Photo of Big Bill with happy people flocked around him…women included)

“No.”
(Bill’s image fades to black and white and fades away)

“Then let’s talk about the two candidates that are.”
(Picture of Clinton Picture of Trump)

“Okay.”

“Why isn’t Donald Trump worried about his own issues with many woman including his wives? Is he trying to distract you from his own issues?”
(Trump photo shrinks in size…Hillary grows larger and centered on screen as voice continues…)

“This is the important question. Let’s talk about Donald Trump. Let’s talk about Donald Trump and his many issues with women, people of color, the economy, foreign policy, abortion rights, gun control, banking, (fading list of issues)…”

When a Conservative calls someone smart, that doesn’t mean what it does for the rest of us, because they’ve gotten caught up in a weird almost-inverse-meritocracy that rewards adherence to dogma, and punishes clear thinking. It usually means that the person simply regurgitates Conservative dogma with confidence.

Finally home from the project from hell. Told my boss, “Never again” as he began talking about how we’d do it differently three years from now. I said, “Yeah, what will really be different is that you won’t be doing it with me!”

Hit all the targets; jumped through all the incredibly idiotic hoops; found work-arounds for information errors in the client-provided paperwork, and now just want to kick back and forget about spending 4 weeks in Yonkers.

Squeezed in a few days before and after the project to play with friends in Manhattan, so there’s that. (Although watching people take selfies in front of Trump Tower about made me barf.)And now that it’s over, I can relish the fact that the money will be good (once I get around to billing.)

Have followed along here whenever possible, but not had much time to comment. Thanks, all, for helping me keep some semblance of sanity.

Friend of a friend worked for Trump for 15 years and said the man never spoke an honest sentence in all that time. Really hope the media finds this guy and gets him to talk. Who am I kidding—he could have video of every lie Trump told and Trump would call him a loser and a dummy and the media would nod their pretty little heads and move on to their next sycophantic story about him.

Yesterday’s NYT had an article about Trump in just about every fucking section. The magazine cover was TRUMP surrounded by confetti—no title at all. And the story was mostly a rehash of crap that happened in March when the “reporter” was following Trump around. And, of course MoDo wrote her 20 millionth anti-Clinton piece. Surprise. Surprise.

Anyway, glad to be home. Glad to be able to devote the attention to LGF that it so richly deserves.

Oh, and fuck Bernie Sanders. Enough already.

Carolla’s schtick is “I swung hammers for a few years and knew I had to get out; I busted my ass in show business to get where I am, so I don’t want my [tax] money spent on all the stupid people who are too lazy to do what I did.” Pretty classic ‘tarian/conservative.

Full disclosure: I listened to his podcast for about a year as part of a shuffle of shows while I worked out; he can be funny, but his misogyny and Ayn-Rand world view just got to be too much. Haven’t heard a peep in over three years. No plans to check back in.
