Next Up in the Donald Trump Attack Plan: Whitewater

But of course
Politics • Views: 49,323

Today Politico confirms that Donald Trump plans to dredge up every single discredited allegation from the 1990s against both Bill and Hillary Clinton. This week, he hauled out the corpse of Vince Foster for some conspiracy-mongering BS. Next up (you knew this coming): Whitewater.

Donald Trump, who in recent days has accused Bill Clinton of rape and suggested he and Hillary Clinton may have had a role in the death of one of their close friends, plans to focus next on the Whitewater real estate scandal, POLITICO has learned.

Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo on Wednesday morning emailed a researcher at the Republican National Committee asking him to “work up information on HRC/Whitewater as soon as possible. This is for immediate use and for the afternoon talking points process.”

Trump is doing this, of course, to pander to the right wing base who’ve never let go of their forlorn hope that the Whitewater pseudo-scandal would put the Clintons in prison, despite the fact that three separate inquiries found no evidence they were involved in any fraudulent activity.

What’d we learn about Whitewater?

Bill had an affair with Monica Lewinsky and lied about it under oath.

The GOP took that to mean a high crime or misdemeanor and impeached Bill on that basis. He was not convicted of said “high crimes and misdemeanors” but he did eventually lose his law license over it.

That’s the sum total of the Whitewater scandal.

Next?

Oh, and HRC allowed her law license to lapse. She didn’t lose it because of a scandal in case Trump was going to dredge that up (or is Drudge that up the appropriate term?).

Blast from the past!
Whitewater, like the other Clinton administration pseudo-scandals, is still a current issue to the GOP base. It was the heyday of Republican conspiracism. The internet was a shining new novelty that could give “proper” attention to the stories that were censored by the evil Marxist conspirators in the mainstream media. They eventually discovered, the hard way, that it also gave equal attention to debunkers and skeptics, but it took a while to realize that.
It was the origin of the RWNJ websites Drudge Report and Free Republic and these sites have not in fact changed a great deal since. You still have to to enter HTML characters one at a time, by hand, to post a link at Free Republic, for example.
In any case, the RWNJs are probably deliriously happy to see a major politician supporting their nostalgia trip.

I always like to point out that in all these scandals, no illegal acts by either Clinton were uncovered, so either they’re truly innocent, or they’re so much smarter than anyone else we should probably just let them run things.

Hang on, how can you accidentally email the wrong person like that? You wouldn’t do that by hitting “Reply All”, and even if you were manually typing it in, most email programs have a history and auto-complete, so just starting to type the address would bring up the correct name and email address as an auto-complete option.

The only way I can think of it happening accidentally is if this person had emailed Marc Caputo on a previous occasion, which means it would come up on the auto-complete options, possibly at the start because “Marc” comes before “Michael” in alphabetical terms.

It’s super-easy to do in all sorts of ways.

We have two “Mark Smiths” in our organization. Except that one is Mark A. Smith and the other is John M. Smith and goes by Mark. Guess how often Mark A. Smith gets John M. Smith’s email.

Even if you’re being careful you make mistakes every so often. And many people are not all that careful.

It’s not as hard as you think. I almost got fired from my current gig within the first month because I missed a single letter in an email address and ended up sending a sensitive advertising report to someone else by accident. I was VERY lucky that my client was overseas and the wrong address I sent that report to ended up being a dead address that wasn’t actually in use. I still had my work laptop confiscated and I had a very long weekend to sweat out whether or not I still had a job.

Nope.

If Clinton sent an email to a subordinate at State to their email address, and State wasn’t backing up their emails, then it’s not her fault.

Plus, more importantly, the email thing isn’t going to matter.

I work for a large org with a very large mailing list. My first name starts with A and my last name is common, so I occasionally get mistaken email messages from other agencies, some of which have some incredibly sensitive information in them (nothing that could make me rich). I always just respond that they have the wrong person and then see how embarrassed/thankful a reply I get from them.

“I was at the National Restaurant Show yesterday and if you look at the robotic devices that are coming into the restaurant industry — it’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries — it’s nonsense and it’s very destructive and it’s inflationary and it’s going to cause a job loss across this country like you’re not going to believe,” said former McDonald’s (MCD) USA CEO Ed Rensi during an interview on the FOX Business Network’s Mornings with Maria.

Nope.

If Clinton sent an email to a subordinate at State to their email address, and State wasn’t backing up their emails, then it’s not her fault.

Plus, more importantly, the email thing isn’t going to matter.

If Trump can milk Whitewater why not the IG report? Not that it’s right, but just the nature of the forces involved.

What the kiosks will be good for is when things are hard to hear. Nothing else. They will still need the employees to do other stuff.

But I think the old CEO is thinking of replacing all the workers because robots are AWESOME!.

I always just respond that they have the wrong person and then see how embarrassed/thankful a reply I get from them.

There is someone from the Boston suburbs with a very similar Comcast email name. I keep getting periodic bills for snow removal services. Must say that the service is very good. We’ve only seen snow here (Lower Alabama) three times in the last 30 years.

I looked up her login in every system where she had a login and sent them to her, warning her to stay on her toes forever.

Time again for a favorite joke:

Hot Down Here

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minneapolis and flew to Florida on Thursday, with the wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail since she was expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: November 18, 2004

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

PS. Sure is freaking hot down here.

I was surprised to find this snopes.com, so apparently there really are people who take it seriously.

Robochef: The robotic arms that can cook Michelin star meals

Robot automation has changed many industries and I have no reason to believe it won’t change the food prep industry eventually. It is just a matter of the technology and costs hitting the right points, raising the minimum to $15 an hour may push that point closer, but I don’t think the tech is quite there yet.

Years ago my college roommate worked for an engineering contractor that designed a meat packing robot for one of their clients, that could take oddly shaped slabs of meat automatically cut and package them for shipping, Once a day it is sprayed down with disinfectant and hosed off with a high pressure hose.

Fast food restaurants are essentially assembly lines already. It may need rudimentary machine vision to be able to detect if there is something wrong and the restaurants may need to reorganize and standardize ingredient placements, but if you hire a person to stock the bun, dispenser and patty dispenser and refill/replace bottles of condiments etc and keep an eye on the robots and do quality control it isn’t an insurmountable issue.

Like I said, I don’t think the tech is there yet, but it isn’t as far as some seem to think.

I notice that to a large extent only big companies with limited competition (cable companies, etc.) make you go very far through those ghastly automated phone things. Where there is competition, there are people to deal with nuances and questions. Not everything is going to fit a nice flow chart and frustrated customers with choice just go elsewhere.

Again, people are having the wrong argument here. If a robot can do the job better* and cheaper** than a human then it makes sense to replace the human with the robot in that job.

The real argument is over who benefits from the resulting productivity gain: society at large or the ownership class. That’s an argument the CEOs don’t want to have, hence the redirection to the “robots will take muh job” rabble-rouser.

* I.e., the end-product/experience for the customer is superior.

** Factoring in all the support, maintenance etc. costs.

Panera has ordering kiosks, but also cashiers for when people need more/direct assistance. Doesn’t exactly save time/money to install computer system that has to be periodically updated/upgraded replaced.

HD and others have installed self-serve cashiers, but instead of getting rid of employees in the process, they still need someone to man those lanes b/c the machines break down, or people can’t do certain kinds of transactions themselves (coupons, discounts, errors in swiping, etc.). Far from saving time/money, it’s just a money suck for companies who think that they’re saving money by swapping tech for human employees.

Not every job benefits from tech replacement, just as some jobs do deserve to be replaced by machines.

Subway/trains can benefit from computer systems doing the job. It would enable trains to run closer together and increase capacity, without errors that can result from distracted driving or DUI or other operator error.

We’ve seen toll collectors go the way of the dodo as cashless tolling and EZ-pass has enabled tolling to be done without even stopping. No one is even missing the transition there.

Food service is a different thing entirely.

re: #160 danarchy

It has sorta happened, although this article says not:

Arizona Did Not Declare That Pregnancy Begins Before Conception

The 18th week bill includes a new definition for when pregnancy begins. A sentence in the bill defines gestational age as “calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period of the pregnant woman,” which would move the beginning of a pregnancy up two weeks prior to conception. The bill’s passage would give Arizona the earliest cutoff for late-term abortions in the country; most states use 20 weeks as a definition.

However, an actual OB-GYN did address the falsehoods — Dr. Jen Gunter. You can read her entire retort to one of these false claims by clicking here, but here’s the abbreviated version:

From a course I took, one of the biggest problems with using robots is SAFETY. There is a lot involved in making sure a robot does not harm a human.
Automotive flirted with the widespread use of robots and settled in to using them for the more dangerous jobs: welding, paint shop, moving heavy/hot pieces.

Same way at Kroger. MrBWS loves the self-checkout, but there’s always at least one item that will set off the machine and require human employee intervention.

The Kroger retiree I live with points out that it is the most experienced checkers who monitor the self-checkout stations. Other registers are often manned by jumped-up semi-trained courtesy clerks (16 years old and up) who are NOT getting checker wages unless they are kept on the register for a certain number of hours. (Said 16-year-olds can operate a register and handle large amounts of money for up to an hour, but are not allowed to push buttons on certain equipment for safety reasons. Oh yeah, and they’re not supposed to check out beer sales.)

This doesn’t improve efficiency for large orders, leaves them short of baggers, and torques off the real checkers who often don’t get 40 hours. Corporate policy masterminded by people who haven’t worked a register in years, if ever.

(okay, now i need to go back and read the rest of the thread)

But don’t worry - we’ll be hearing about Whitewater from now until November. And then for the 8 years beyond it. Because the GOP wants to refight the 1990s.

Fast food outlets will not be able to outright BUY robotics systems. The most they can hope for is to lease a robotics systems from the manufacturer. The lease contract will of course include a service and maintenance requirement and the service technicians will be employees/contractors of the robotics firms, not the fast food franchise.

I’d say yes. Better to get it out now, even before the convention. I don’t think that there are any fatal blows to be made by bringing up such worn out stuff.

The Hillary campaign seems to be holding back on Trump’s garbage, and as many have said , it’d probably a great ploy to wait until everyone down ticket has gotten on the Donald train and then blast it with all of the crap he’s done in his lifetime. Create collateral damage.

The other store we use, Market Basket, doesn’t have them. The workers there walked out when their one of their bosses got shoved out by a greedy cousin who looked to sell the chain. Just read this article and the excerpt beneath the tweet—which was part of TBogg’s response to the purity crowd back in ‘08—almost made me FOCLOL:

Your Mumia sweatshirt won’t get you into heaven anymore

Let me see if I can explain it this way:

Every year in Happy Gumdrop Fairy-Tale Land all of the sprites and elves and woodland creatures gather together to pick the Rainbow Sunshine Queen. Everyone is there: the Lollipop Guild, the Star-Twinkle Toddlers, the Sparkly Unicorns, the Cookie Baking Apple-cheeked Grandmothers, the Fluffy Bunny Bund, the Rumbly-Tumbly Pupperoos, the Snowflake Princesses, the Baby Duckies All-In-A-Row, the Laughing Babies, and the Dykes on Bikes. They have a big picnic with cupcakes and gumdrops and pudding pops, stopping only to cast their votes by throwing Magic Wishing Rocks into the Well of Laughter, Comity, and Good Intentions. Afterward they spend the rest of the night dancing and singing and waving glow sticks until dawn when they tumble sleepy-eyed into beds made of the purest and whitest goose down where they dream of angels and clouds of spun sugar.

You don’t live there.

Grow the fuck up.

Guys, you should realize there’s actually a huge difference between Hillary and Trump. For one thing, Hillary isn’t a racist, and isn’t being endorsed by a bunch of Neo Nazis and white nationalists. If you’re willing to have a Trump presidency, just because you don’t want to vote for the oligarchy if Sanders doesn’t get the nomination, don’t just think about four years of Trump, think about the Supreme court. We all know that of the two of them, Hillary at least would nominate much more liberal justices than Trump, and do you guys really want another Scalia on the bench or someone even more rightwing? Trump is off is rocker and could appoint some real wingnuts to the nation’s highest court. Do you want to take a chance that civil rights could be further weakened and Roe V Wade, might be overturned? Its not like the Democrats will be able to filibuster all of his Nominees for four straight years, especially without the Republicans being able to use it to gin up anger against them.

Novack argued that the state should end weekend voting because it gave an unfair advantage to large urban areas, where minorities are more likely to support Democrats.

“If there’s an office open 30 days versus an office that’s only open 10 work days, there are obviously voters that have a lot more access than someone else,” Novack insisted. “There has to come a point where it’s just giving over-access … to particular parts of the state.”

When she was asked if some voters had too much access, Novack replied that there was “too much access to the voters as far as opportunities.”

The county clerk added that long lines in urban areas were actually a sign that voters had enough access to polls.

Maybe next time some religious right loon whines about “religious freedom” when they can’t have things like state sponsored school prayer or the supreme court strikes down another attempt to teach creationism in science class, we should bring this guy up. Obviously Amedia has no respect for “religious freedom” if he’s willing to let someone starve to death just because they worship another god.

If I recall, Krugman’s gotten a lot of hate for being pro-Clinton. Anyhow, as far as I’m concerned, the Bernie campaign failed to convince enough people that he was a better candidate than Clinton. If they seriously believe she’s no better than Trump then they’re not worth my goddamned time. Clinton’s positions on LGBT rights and choice and keeping ACA law are enough for me to see her as better than Trump. And unlike Sanders, she actually wants to create a long term solution with a strong Democratic Congress. Bernie meanwhile can’t even campaign for people who have endorsed him.

Most Americans were tired of their shenanigans then, so I’m wondering what they think will be different today. Spending millions investigating Vince Foster’s death and Whitewater didn’t make me hesitate to vote to reelect Bill Clinton then, and it won’t stop me from voting for HRC today. It was a nothing-burger then, and it’s a bigger nothing-burger today. That they’re having to go back in history to find something to smear HRC with tells me that deep down inside they know they have nothing that they can say that would stick, so it’s back to their favorite games: lies, conspiracy theories, and propaganda peddling. This move also indicates to me that they don’t want to explain/ talk about their policies and the many negative effects they’d have on the nation, the world, and us.

Good for him. Excellent speech. The religious right is going to hate him for this.

I was wondering when someone in the anti choice crowd would say something like this.

‘Pro-Life’ Activist: Not Our Fault ‘If Women Wind Up Dying’ From Coat Hanger Abortions

At least this one’s honest about what tehy really are. They don’t care if women die.

I think I’ve seen this minister before. This man has my respect.

Just read this article and the excerpt beneath the tweet—which was part of TBogg’s response to the purity crowd back in ‘08—almost made me FOCLOL:

TBogg going after the PUMA crowd while he was at freaking FireDogLake in 2008 was a thing of utter beauty. Before he joined FDL, he had an independent blog with no registration requirements for commenters. That purple blog was the most fun place you could be on the internets.

Remember when a fly landing on Obama meant that he was the Antichrist? Good times.

It’s good to see clergy using the pulpit to oppose hate based off religion rather than using it to spread hate.

re: #37 iossarian

Yes, as long as people like me “knew their place.” It’s easy for those who have and can exercise all of their civil rights to ignore others who don’t and cannot exercise theirs. They oftentimes dismiss the disparity as being “just the way things are.” It’s because of having to grow up under Jim Crow in the south that I’m 100% in support of every American being able to exercise his/her civil rights. No exceptions for alleged religious freedom, which I see being used by the right as a vehicle to create two or more levels of citizenship in the U.S. For those who say they love the Constitution, I find it strange and amazing that they are working furiously to undermine it.

He has mine too. You don’t hear this enough from Preachers now of days but it is what all of them need to be saying and preaching.

re: #200 I Would Prefer Not To

Something tells me that Ms. Haley wants to be VP

She’s been auditioning for that role for the past several years.

And this year, she’s gone from Rubio to Cruz to Trump within a matter of a few months, so she definitely has the loyalty/consistency part down pat.

She’s a Republican Rising Star. But to those of us who know her wel, she’s Icky Nikki.

Not sure ‘But’ is the proper word choice there. Try ‘Therefore’, or ‘And So’.

Because the fundie fucks see it as a win-win: Women who are forced to carry to term and deliver, as well as those women who are maimed or killed in back-alley abortions, are sinners before God who must be made to pay for their sins.

Stanley Sea and I have talked about going to Trump event. I’m sorely tempted.

Let’s go say Hello. I have no real idea of location or timing. And the protesters might be enough reason to pass by way of walking into harms way without good enough reason.
