Donald Trump: “I’d Love to Debate Bernie but They’ve Gotta Pay a Lot of Money for It”

Echoes of Dr. Evil
Politics • Views: 49,988

In the latest chapter of the ongoing saga of History’s Weirdest Presidential Election, Bernie Sanders says he’ll “debate” Donald Trump.

So here we have a guy who’s not going to be the Democratic nominee agreeing to “debate” a guy who’s not yet the Republican nominee. Who benefits from this? Certainly not the Democratic Party.

On ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Trump was asked if he would consider holding a debate with Sanders. Trump agreed to the idea.

“If he paid a sum toward charity I would love to do that,” said the business mogul, noting that a Sanders vs. Trump debate “would have such high ratings.”

Sanders quickly responded with a tweet reading, “Game On. I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7th primary.”

Trump clarified today that sure, he’ll debate Bernie Sanders — for $10 million.

OT Juanita Jean has a good comment on the Great Bathroom Follies:

“I will publicly admit that I have been to Target four times in the past five days and buy something I don’t need and use the restroom because I am told that people will get molested in the restrooms in Target.

“It has not happened yet and I’m only gonna give it a few more days before I give up hope.”

Has Trump ever pretended his “campaign” isn’t a tv show? (And I ain’t talking non-profit public tv.) The sad irony is tv pretends he doesn’t look at it that way. (Like they care; they’re making more than ever.)

Recycling… that’s what’s going on here.

Bernie’s recycling right wing talking points against Hillary, and Trump thinks he sees what’s working so he’ll use them going forward.

Combine that with the endless free time Trump keeps getting from a pliant media and it’s an uphill struggle to fight the everlasting derplanche that Trump keeps spouting.

Not questioned about his taxes. No pushback on anything. Lies go unanswered. And Trump Gish Gallops his way off stage to thunderous applause from his marks.

According to the RWNJs, he’s been POTUS since 2008.

This is what happens when you spend 30-40 years actively delegitimizing scientific inquiry, expert opinion, knowledge, and indeed objectively verifiable reality itself. You get a large percentage of the population who can be told literally anything as long as it comports with their worldview, and who cannot be swayed by incontrovertible fact.

Obama lies all the time because he’s a liar, because I’m certain he’s a liar, whether or not anything he says can be proved false. Trump ‘tells it like it is’ because I already believe what he says is true, no matter that it’s all been proved false.

Welcome to Post-Reality America.

Whack-A-Mole  May 26, 2016 • 11:58:00am

I assume there has to be some sort of mechanism within the party rules to permanently expel rogue members? Anyone have any idea what kind of bar it would be to clear on the Dem side? IMO, Bernie’s behavior and contempt for the party as a whole has made him a worthwhile candidate for it.

Not that he’d mind - he’d eat up the attention and use it as an excuse to continue his revolting campaign, err, I mean revolution.

Still, I’d love to see it happen on the main DNS stage in prime time, seen across the world- the first motion made after Clinton is officially named the nominee to be strip Sanders of all membership, voting rights, and all influence for actively working against the party’s interests. Add all the insult and humiliation they can to the injury of losing the primary, not out of spite, but to make sure the next asshat that comes along doesn’t piss in the pool and hurt the party’s electoral chances across the country.

In the last string I mentioned the irony of Obama having the nuclear football with him in Hiroshima. This is the small briefcase that contains the nuclear launch codes and related items. So we had guests last night - a friend from Austin who was laying over in NY for a night, before flying to India for a month of intensive yoga practice. We went out to dinner, then came home and were hanging out on our porch. We noticed a lot of cars coming and going to the house across the street and assumed they were having a party.

I took our guests to the train station this morning and we stopped into our local deli for breakfast sandwiches. Our mail carrier came in and told us that the man across the street had been killed in a car crash yesterday morning.

37 years young, leaving behind a wife and young son. So sad.

Wind tubines do kill a lot of birds every year-especially the older styles. They are working on less lethal designs. The number is far less than those killed by flying into windows and is insignificant compared to the number killed by cats. Of course, cats don’t kill a lot of raptors and the wind turbines do.

So about this whole debate thing…it’s not happening, right? Hillary said ‘no’ and Trump is just bullshitting when he says he’ll debate Bernie.

Besides, if they did debate, Trump would want to attack Clinton and there is no amount of defending her that Bernie could do that would be satisfactory to her campaign. Not to mention having one’s primary opponent fight your battles doesn’t look good.

Now I know why Bernie accepted Trump’s challenge automatically - back in the fall he suggested inter-party debates with multiple candidates on stage so that the American people could see the differences between Republicans and Democrats on the issues that matter (that is, the issues that make it to the early debates but get covered up for the general because there’s too much commitment required to really address them).

And no, I don’t blame Hillary for saying no. She just has to lay low and become the nominee in two more weeks once all the voting is done. After that, what the candidates say will matter.

Apologies for the OT:

The investigation of a “sexting” case involving a Prince William County teenager, and the desire by prosecutors and police to repeatedly obtain photos of his genitalia, sparked a national uproar in the summer of 2014. Authorities backed down from their second search warrant for explicit photos, and the teen was placed on probation. The case took a further turn last December when the detective, David E. Abbott Jr., was accused of molesting two young boys and killed himself as police moved to arrest him at his Gainesville townhouse.

But the case isn’t over. The teenager, Trey Sims, 19, filed a federal civil rights suit Wednesday against both Abbott’s estate and Claiborne Richardson II, the assistant Prince William commonwealth’s attorney who police said directed Abbott to obtain a search warrant for photographs of Sims’ genitalia, for comparison with video sent to Sims’ then-15-year-old girlfriend. In June 2014, Abbott did get a search warrant and photograph Sims with a cell phone, which attorney Victor M. Glasberg alleged was manufacturing child pornography. When Abbott and Richardson obtained a second search warrant, for photos of Sims erect, reports in The Washington Post “prompted a firestorm of public protest,” Glasberg wrote, causing Richardson and Abbott to withdraw the warrant.

Yeah, I know…that’s the problem with getting to know the candidates…you learn things about them you didn’t want to know and they go from people whose ideas you like to people you wouldn’t want to share a cross-country drive in a minivan with. A little separation is good sometimes.

He’s an incompetent fuckwit who happens to have an inspiring message. I liked him a lot at first, but he has no idea how to enact the core policies of his stump speech and isn’t interested in fundraising for the legislative coalition he would need to do so as President. He lost because he explicitly rejected the Obama coalition in order to focus on the white working-class, in 2016, when the Democratic Party’s biggest strength is its diversity. There’s little respectable about the campaign he’s run and nothing respectable about what he’s let it devolve into.

“He used a bad word cuz he knows nothing about business,” Trump said. “When you rattle someone, that’s good.”

Horseshit. In business, you don’t want to rattle your partners, or your investors. Maybe you want to rattle people you’re trying to cut a deal with.

In any case, this is the same guy who claimed our allies don’t feel like they can rely on us anymore, and he’s the guy to fix that. Pretty sure that ‘rattled’ is the VERY LAST THING you want allies to be.

If you think about Trump’s whole career, it’s always about The Deal, getting The Deal. He thinks the whole President thing is getting The Deal. It’s about beating the other guy. Once that’s done, he doesn’t give a flying fuck. He doesn’t care about RUNNING anything. It’s about SELLING things.

For me it isn’t about what he has said. It is what he has done, tried to do and bitching about the process and procedures which he knew damn well how it all worked.

And what really got me was when he started to bag on the early primaries like us poor folk in fly over country Ohio like we are all mindless establishment followers and we don’t count because his awesomeness was more apparent later. Fuck that noise.

All the states count…all the votes count…and he has yet to acknowledge that real voting over caucuses helped him which has been proven two times now in states he won caucuses but when they had actual primary voting he was soundly defeated.

If he just admitted to the reality of it all I’d be impressed, instead he keeps trying to pull a rabbit out of his hat with stunts and BS.

Yeah, I know…that’s the problem with getting to know the candidates…you learn things about them you didn’t want to know and they go from people whose ideas you like to people you wouldn’t want to share a cross-country drive in a minivan with. A little separation is good sometimes.

So look at the candidates, but don’t look too closely. And never take what they say about the other people in the race personally - they (and I include Bernie here) honestly don’t give a shit if you don’t like what they say about their opponents. Their target audience is the people who are barely paying attention. Those people they can swing.

I was going to just sit back and vote until Bernie flagrantly lied about Hillary said she called him “quote unquote unqualified” in order to say the same thing about her. Now Trump has been quoting Sanders at every opportunity, in part because Bernie never had the integrity to admit he was wrong about what she said and to take back that insanely damaging and ridiculous charge. That’s when I decided to volunteer, because Bernie clearly doesn’t give a shit that he just handed Trump ammunition to use and has now endangered the lives of the minority voters who rejected him.

That’s why I have no respect at all for him anymore, or his deadend, glib, generally comfortable and mostly white supporters who are more than happy to gamble with other people’s lives. The stakes in this elections have been explicitly demarcated, they are promises to ethnically and religiously cleanse our society of the most easily scapegoated and vulnerable. They are explicit promises of to torture prisoners and commit mass war crimes.

So I’m sorry if I have no sense of humor left regarding Sanders’ delusional plan to reverse the will of the voters who rejected him by tearing down the only person who in the end will be standing between Trump and the Presidency. I get that it’s easy for you to keep glibly grinning like a jackass and pretending the risks being incurred by people who do not look like you are no big deal, because your sense of empathy has been ironically eroded by the same wealth and privilege that Sanders decries. But please, wake the fuck up and smell what you’re shoveling.

The three, mouths open, gaped at the humiliated Shvonder.
“Shameful, that’s what it is!” he said uncertainly.
“If there were a discussion now,” said the woman, flushing hotly, “I would
prove to Pyotr Alexandrovich…”
“I beg your pardon, but do you wish to open the discussion this minute?”
inquired Philip Philipovich politely.
The woman’s eyes sparkled.
“I understand your irony, Professor, we will go now… Only I, as the chairman
of cultural department of our house…”
“Chairwoman,” Philip Philipovich corrected her.
“Would like to ask you,” at this point the woman pulled out of her coat-front a
few brightly coloured journals, still damp from the snow, “to take a few journals
sold for the benefit of German children. 50 kopecks each.”
“No, thank you,” replied Philip Philipovich briefly, glancing at the journals.
The four indicated total amazement and the woman went the colour of
cranberry juice.
“Why do you refuse?”
“I don’t want them.”
“You have no sympathy for the children of Germany?”
“On the contrary.”
“You grudge fifty copecks?”
“No.”
“Why then?”
“I don’t want them.”
There was a short silence.
“Do you know what, Professor?” said the girl, heaving a deep sigh. “If you
were not a luminary known to all Europe and if you had not been interceded for in
the most disgraceful manner by… (the fair man tugged at the end of her jacket but
she shook him off) by people who, I am quite sure, we will eventually get to the
bottom of, you should be arrested.”
“And what for?” inquired Philip Philipovich with some curiosity.
“You are a proletariat-hater!” said the woman proudly.
“Yes, I do dislike the proletariat,” Philip Philipovich agreed sadly and pressed
a knob. A bell sounded. A door opened somewhere in the corridor.
“Zina,” called Philip Philipovich, “you may serve dinner. You will permit me,
gentlemen?”

South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Texas, Alabama, Virginia, all open primaries, all blowout wins for Clinton. Funny how the Sanders narrative is that open primaries only count when the electorate is overwhelmingly white, and no lower turnout caucus can supersede it as happened in Nebraska and Washington.

Washington Caucus;

This is the more likely scenario. It would go something like this:

Trump: Sanders is a great guy. Like me, he cares about workers, and wants America to be great.
Sanders: Well, I’m not exactly like you, but I do care about working people —
Trump: See, and when we’re talking about workers, it’s all those hard working whites that have lost their ability to make money like they used to. I’ve seen how you, Bernie, how you have tried to bring whites back into the Democratic party.
Sanders: Yeah, but if we fix the economic problems, we’ll help everyo —
Trump: Crooked Hillary isn’t working for the common people. She’s got all those groups to pander to, blacks, women, trans bathroom pedophiles —
Sanders: They deserve to be —
Trump: and she isn’t even paying attention to the people who made this country great. You want to make this country great again, right Bernie.
Sanders: Yes, but we —
Trump: See, and that’s why I can count on you to help me win in November.

Kos published a hard-hitting anti-Bernie article. There was a lot of whining, but also some support diaries. This is a representative comment from one of those diaries:

“Path” is a good way to put it. Many people at DK & elsewhere appear to have traveled a similar journey, starting out excited about Sanders when he appeared to want to discuss actual issues of substance even when prompted otherwise (e.g., the “sick and tired” of “damn emails” comment in 1st debate last October). Now many of those people are concerned or worse at the turn the Sanders campaign has taken, where, for quite some time, it no longer seems to focus on issues of substance (meaning things the Congress & president could work on via legislation), but on process issues against Democrats (rigged primaries, “messy” conventions, the DNC Chair, debate schedules, voter registration deadlines, etc.). Markos has traveled this journey along with many of his readers. I think his feelings about Sanders are more a reflection of the Sanders campaign than they are about Markos.

They push back because they find it difficult to believe they are losing.

However he did add that the response from the Trinity community itself has been more mixed, calling the network of Trinity families a “Christian mafia.”

Trinity is comprised of some of the most powerful families in Wichita—essentially a Christian mafia—and some of them have claimed that they feel attacked or threatened by what I’m doing. They claim to fear for themselves, for their children, and for their businesses. My counterpoint is to imagine what a closeted LGBT student at Trinity is feeling as they endure the brainwashing, shaming, and emotional abuse at the hands of the people who claim to be helping them on their path to adulthood.

My grandmother thought the great aunt that helped raise her and her sisters after her mother died was Irish but she was American, she probably had a bit of an Irish brogue since her first language would have been Irish.

Re: the “Pocahontas” thing: Warren was simply confused about her ancestry, whereas Trump outright lied about being of Swedish (rather than German) origin. Good going, Adolf!

I’m not even sure I’d say she was confused. Where she grew up, in Oklahoma, there’s apparently a lot of “Great-Granpappy said his mom was a Cherokee!”, and it gets passed down.

Mostly the past is pretty damn mundane, and what people remember is stuff that catches the interest of little kids listening to old farts. And a lot gets left out of that sort of family history. I discovered that my Great Grandmother’s family was living in the Allegheny County Home - basically the poorhouse - in 1870, and only because of the Census. It’s not the sort of thing you tell your grandchildren. My Great Grandfather, I knew, was a world class sprinter in the 1880s, and later became a Motorman on the Pittsburgh streetcar lines. What I DIDN’T know was that he’d bought a tobacco shop with his winnings from racing, but it failed withing 3 years or so.

From @SaraJBenincasa:

I’m Voting For The Democrat In November Because I’m Not A Human Tire Fire

This is for anybody wasting time online blathering about how Hillary and Trump are the same; how if Hillary gets the nomination, they won’t vote at all; or how they’re super-stoked to vote for a third party candidate because THEY HAVE PRINCIPLES, GODDAMMIT.

Hi. I’m your Auntie Sara. Time to wake the fuck up. If you are decent, you are going to vote for the Democrat in November. Not because you love Hillary (or Bernie, for whom I will vote if Hillary doesn’t get the nomination!) Not because you love the two-party system (I don’t! Do you? That’s weird! We deserve better!) But because we’re dealing with brass tacks reality here, not our dreams.

In the real world, sometimes you do not get all of the candy. Sometimes you get a little bit of the candy and that is better than getting a pile of actual flaming garbage. Don’t just think about yourself… Think about the people who will be affected by the policies of the next president, as well as the people who will be affected by the Supreme Court. Unless your politics is just about whatever T-shirt you wear, in which case you really ought to get more into football.

You think this is condescending? I’m using small words to help you understand what many, many, many of us get: your assertion that you can’t in good conscience vote for Hillary is an insult to me and women and queer folks and all the people who benefit and even have a chance to thrive under Democratic policies. You’d consign us to 4 years of Trump and two or three decades of a disgusting, vile Supreme Court because you have a sad feelz in your tum-tum?

You’re goddamn right I’m condescending to you. You deserve this.

Get with the fucking program.

We have 3 french bulldogs that are just the light of our lives (No Kids)…. 1 is a dog in all aspects. The other 2 are something different, more or less. I can’t quite put my finger on that statement but I can tell you it’s true.

This one is not mine but the character is perfect. They are such little clowns.

Once upon a time a person had to write an open letter and send it in to a newspaper for publication. They were rare and got a lot of attention. Open letters are now so common any idiot can write one anywhere.

Dear Trump,
Fuck you, you bigot.

Two votes for that from this household!

Wasn’t that a good show? Mia sposa stills ribs me about how the only times she’s seen me awake before noon on a weekend was that year when Brisco County and Ralph Bakshi’s Mighty Mouse were shown on Saturday morning in San Francisco in the ’80s (on our $5 Goodwill tv).

Shaun’s getting into an argument with the 538 folks over math. This will not end well. For Shaun.

All Shaun has left is the feels, and even those aren’t going to overcome the facts. Or the math.

How do you want to skin it? Eliminate supers? Bernie still loses.
Want to make everything winner take all? Bernie loses.
Want to make everything open primaries? Bernie loses.

There’s no scenario in which Bernie wins. None.

And that’s the bit Shaun can’t quite grasp.

Make everything caucuses. I think that was in the original 538 analysis, was it not?

I have absolutely no recollection of The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr..

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. was an excrusiatingly highlarious western parody that aired in the 1490’s and starred some guy named Bruce Cambell (sp?).

Hopefully someday it will be belatedly honored by being awarded our nation’s highest civilian honor, the Raimi Prize.

Bernie isn’t a Democrat, and they probably shouldn’t have allowed him to run in the Democratic primary without committing to be one.

True. That’s one change they need to make by 2020. No non-Democrats should be allowed to run for the Presidential candidacy. Doesn’t make any sense otherwise as Senator Sanders has so amply proven. He has zero loyalty to the Party and some of his supporters want to destroy it.

You really think people are going to go back to respecting what Shaun King has to say after this? That’s a laugh.

It’s like actions have consequences or some strange voodoo like that, and people fucking remember. I don’t give a shit what you’re trying to insinuate about 2008 because frankly, Shaun has shown himself to be a biased viewpoint unwilling to accept new data that doesn’t fit his worldview and I don’t respect that.

Shaun is also not the only person I’ve lost respect for through this primary bullshit, and group hugs after the convention aren’t going to change that either.

I could give a crap about Shaun King - I was being more general. He got his name in the lights for being part of the Hands Up, Don’t Shoot movement, right? That was cool. I didn’t mind his being a Sanders supporter (I am). His open butt-hurt online? I find all that shit tedious and don’t care one way or the other how it turns out or who is irrevocably turned off by it. It really is just not my thing.

You replied to a comment specifically talking about Shaun King and how people have lost respect for him. In general, people are going to interpret your reply as being about Shaun King unless you make it very clear that it wasn’t.

People haven’t lost respect for him because he was/is a Sanders supporter. People have lost respect for him because of his behavior and inability to deal with reality.

If this bores you, you don’t have to comment on it.

If the other two are like my four-legged grand-baby, they think they’re actually your kids. If my Winston could talk, he’d say he’s definitely “Grandma’s baby.” He’s my daughter’s dog, but she moved to another state to be with her fiance, so now there’s just the two of us, and he instantly became my grand-baby since thus far, I have no grand-kids.
