In San Diego Speech, Trump Personally Attacks Judge in Trump U Case as “Mexican”

And the crowd booed
Politics • Views: 49,191

Yesterday Donald Trump devoted a large portion of his stump speech to attacking the judge in the ongoing case against his Trump University scam, describing him as a “hater” and a “Mexican.”

In what the Wall Street Journal characterized as an “extended tirade,” Trump spent 12 minutes of his 58-minute speech focused on the case and the California judge who will hear it.

“I have a judge who is a hater of Donald Trump, a hater. He’s a hater. His name is Gonzalo Curiel,” Trump told the crowd. “I think Judge Curiel should be ashamed of himself.”

Trump told his supporters he believes Judge Curiel should be removed from the case, citing the fact that Curiel was appointed to the bench by President Obama. Trump also said he believes Curiel is “Mexican.” The crowd — which had previously shouted “build that wall” — booed loudly.

By the way, Judge Curiel was born in Indiana.

Replace Mexican with Jew and you got a Hitler stump speech. As for the honorable Judge Curiel, he’s from Indiana. Trump and his xenophobic hoard of supporters can go fuck themselves with rusty shovels for the the atmosphere of animosity and hostility to anyone not a white American of European descent.

That’s why he would not last even his first term. He’s gonna lose so it won’t matter. But if
the nightmare happens, his VP may be in charge the first year after an indictment or worse. Is there a “conduct unbecoming law” for the commander in chief?

Could this judge get him for contempt outside the court? Legal question I guess.

This guy will never recognize the boundaries between executive, legislative and judicial.

I have never seen such an incredibly thin skinned piece of shit seeking the presidency. I hope Clinton beats him in a landslide and he becomes so disillusioned that he leaves this country forever and goes to an isolated island and rots away in obscurity there.

I’d expect the same is true for John Lewis and Barbara Boxer. Really, this bullshit that Governor Malloy and former Rep Frank are strong supporters of Clinton is fucking stupid. And Bernie’s picks aren’t strong supporters of him? Clinton at least picked peole who have experience legislating. Bernie picked Cornel West who has been a total asshole to the President.

Also, Ukraine is jamming its fingers in Russia’s eyes again.

Former Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen is named an advisor for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, a move described by a Russian deputy chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee as a “hostile gesture”.

I don’t know what to make of the recent polling that shows Drumpfskind close or even leading Hillary in the popularity vote.

Are Americans attracted to Drumpfskind because of what he has said? Or is what he says irrelevant?

Or, are people just turned off by Hillary Clinton?

Simpler than that. Never underestimate the tendency of the dimwitted American people to do what their TV tells them to do. When the TV is full of nothing but Trump all day … well, ask any advertising Account Executive what that means.

‘…he functions as his own big-picture strategist and micro-managing chief executive. And he is directly involved in the intramural skirmishing that has engulfed his campaign, both stoking and calming tensions depending on the circumstances.

“His style can be what I call, ‘Hands off, hands on.’ He gives people space to think and work and doesn’t get involved in everything each day, but he is the kind of person who can swoop in a second and change everything,” said Sam Nunberg, a former aide who was let go from the campaign last year following disagreements with Lewandowski and controversy over past racially charged posts on Facebook. “He monitors it all and he comes to check in on things when you don’t expect him.”

This management style is a recipe for major failure.

His diatribe would have been a disaster for any other candidate, but I’m sounding like a broken record when I say that all this kind of xenophobia, racism, bigotry, and flat out hate speech actually enhances his support among his base. He’s counting on that polarization.

But the media should be reporting on the hate instead of burying the details.

He’s calling out one of the judges who’s overseeing one of the many cases against his Trump “U” scam.

You’d think that people would recognize Trump as the racist demagogue charlatan that he is, but they still find ways to ignore or paper over it.

Trump’s already been shown to be operating Trump “U” as a scam in NY - he clearly wasn’t operating a university in NY under NYS law. His only motive was to profit off his name with nonsensical real estate tips that people paid a lot of money to hear.

The real issue is that he’s making money off scamming people - and now has the audacity to attack the judge overseeing the case in CA.

Polls that show Trump close are usually not likely voters, or they under-sample independents.

Frank Luntz was arguing with Charles that a national Fox news poll was fair because the GOP/Dem split was even at 40/40. But independent voters were sampled at 16% when the national number is about 40%. Any poll that under-samples independents is bullshit. Independents are mostly undecided at this point.

44
jaunte  May 28, 2016 • 12:01:11pm

Here’s my Godwin for the afternoon:

By late 1942 Hitler’s subordinates had split into cliques that competed for increasingly scarce resources, while he remained the final arbiter of all disputes. His senior commanders felt free to contact him directly; they knew that the last man to brief him often got what he wanted.
bbc.co.uk

So far, Mr. Trump has shown little inclination to adjust to a political world. His penchant for setting up competition and infusing tension between his subordinates has carried over from his real estate company.

“He certainly does love playing people against each other, but in my experience he knew how to make me reach my potential,” said Sam Nunberg, who was fired from the campaign in 2015 after a series of clashes with the campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski. “You become very committed in that environment.”

But, as was the case with Mr. Wiley’s dismissal, Mr. Trump is reliant on information he garners himself, and can be swayed by the last person he talked to.

Democratic officials responded to Sanders’ request on Saturday, saying in a letter that Malloy and Frank were elected under party rules and that Sanders wasn’t alleging any violations of that process.

I can understand Senator Sanders’s frustration at falling behind in the primaries. I presume anyone who has the chutzpah to run for President thinks he or she is the dream candidate for the electorate.

When reality sets in (there can be only one), it has to be awfully frustrating. How one accepts that he or she will not be the nominee shows that candidate’s grace under fire, and if the reports are correct, at the moment Mr. Sanders is not particularly graceful.

I am not sure whether it would be a benefit or a detriment for Mrs. Clinton to select him as a running mate (I believe a similar proposal was floated in 2008 between Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton). While it might settle some jangled nerves amongst Sanders supporters, I am not sure that it would benefit the ticket (and Mr. Sanders is still a seat in the Senate that is reliably Democratic, even if he is not a Democrat).

As for the “Bernie Bro” phenomenon, from my uneducated and very isolated position it looks a lot more like people who have neither any clue how electoral politics work, or perhaps are not even liberal/Democratic voters in the first place (“rodent copulators” to use Senator Cruz’s term).

And what didn’t help is that much more moderate Sanders supporters couldn’t believe that fellow supporters could be that douchey, and gave them cover for a long time.

He’s desperate to stay out of prison. He should have thought of that before he decided God wanted him to take over a wildlife refuge.

Well, that was Ammon Bundy, not Cliven. Nevertheless, with all the wingnuts roaming Cliven’s ranch, his claim to the court was it was an entire spontaneous outpouring of support (and guns pointed at Federal agents). He had nothing to do with it at all (according to his statement to the court).

I guess both Bundys are going to learn about that “personal responsibility” thing conservatives are always on about, as in “go directly to jail, do not pass GO”

Sanders demanding the DNC remove Barney Frank is sheer egotistical hubris. Not only does he demand — and get! — Cornel West on the platform committee, a travesty after West’s irresponsible extreme rhetoric, he now wants them to remove people just because he doesn’t like them. Fuck Bernie Sanders. I’m all the way done with him.

Don’t have a problem with Sanders getting to choose his own people to be part of the committee. But trying to unseat your opponent’s people is just being an asshole.

Of course, a lot of Sanders supporters are going to excuse this move…

From what I read in the places where those strange creatures called BernieOrBusters accumulate in unnatural concentrations, there are lots of truthers among them, and those who aren’t do not object to expressions of trutherism, or do so only weakly - which means their perceptions of the whole political process are quite … different; the wars are started by the ruling elites - usually transnational corporations, banksters and/or Zionists; hence Hillary is at least as bad as Trump, because she’s a puppet of those forces; Trump probably too, but he’s less hawkish; plus even if Trump will be worse at home, some figure they have an obligation to the folks in ME whom Hillary will murder.

My conclusion is that those folks are unreachable.

He needs to be confronted about this. I think Bernie really has a problem with other people getting credit for standing up for progressive causes. He has been pretty tough on Sanders take on Wall Street. He also has the gall to debate people like Robert Reich and other Bernie spokespeople on TV and make them look bad as he tears into the whole thinking pretty thoroughly.

So I think Bernie sees Barney Frank as a roadblock to his dreams of taking over the entire Democratic party and win the election.

I don’t know. All I can think of are a few possibilities:

a) When he is doing well he is a nice guy, when he is not he is really a jerk.
b) Perhaps he is in denial about all this (and hopefully will come around)
c) He has others in his campaign that are pushing him in this way

Bernie for Veep? No. Just no. The talent set that Bernie has does not overlap with that required for the position. Not remotely. A Veep has to (1) support and advocate for the President’s policies; (2) glad-hand phonies, at home and abroad; (3) attack the President’s enemies with a certain subtle and humorous brio, but only when asked so to do; (4) preferably be younger than the President; (5) preferably be in a position to learn, and to develop, as well as exploit, contacts [vide (2) supra] … There isn’t even an argument for (in LBJ’s magnificent phrase) having Bernie inside the tent pissing out rather than outside the tent pissing in, because I am damn sure that within a matter of days he’d be pissing all over the rugs anyway.

I would actually like to have him in the Senate calling for banking reform and action to reduce inequality. That’s where he does some good. Of course, Warren does it better but she can use the help.

Okay, now that really sounds like Herr Shicklegruber.

Old Adolf set up the Third Reich so that all his underlings fought with one another for position and power. Göring battled with Goebbels who battled with Himmler who battled with Speer. The people under them battled with each other and so on down the line.

It meant that no one became a danger to Herr Shicklegruber. Which after Röhm almost toppled Hitler was something the Führer was not going to allow.

Is is also, in my opinion one of the main reason the Third Reich lost the war. They were often too busy fighting with each other to fight their enemies.

Trump and his xenophobic hoard of supporters can go fuck themselves with rusty shovels for the the atmosphere of animosity and hostility to anyone not a white American of European descent.

Just imagine this kind of horseshit from a sitting President.

The rest of the world must think we’re insane for allowing this obviously unqualified, bigoted, loudmouthed, Tribble-haired carnival barker to be the nominee for a major political party.

Yeah. Joe seems to have been good, and his missteps are usually endearing (BFD) and do not undercut the President’s message. Older goes well with a younger boss, given the right personalities, and vice versa.

OK, for extra credit: Who on earth will The Donald pick?

Judge orders release of internal Trump University documents

A federal judge has ordered the release of internal Trump University documents in an ongoing lawsuit against the company, including “playbooks” that advised sales personnel how to market high-priced courses on getting rich through real estate.

The Friday ruling, in which Judge Gonzalo Curiel cited heightened public interest in presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, was issued in response to a request by The Washington Post. The ruling was a setback for Trump, whose lawyers argued that the documents contained trade secrets.

Curiel’s order came the same day that Trump railed against the judge at a boisterous San Diego rally for his handling of the case, in which students have alleged they were misled and defrauded. The trial is set for November.

Trade secrets! Hilarious!

The ceremony held Friday was a grim reminder of how human body parts of indigenous people were swapped and sold in a grisly, exploitative trade. Many of the remains were taken from New Zealand by foreigners, according to the Library of Congress.

“These were dark days, when these tupuna (ancestors) were traded, collected and stolen, but today we have the opportunity to put right the mistakes of the past,” said Dr. Arapata Hakiwai, a Maori co-leader in a statement from Te Papa.
A total of 60 Maori and Moriori individuals’ remains held in private and public collections in the United States and the United Kingdom were repatriated.

The Smithsonian had received the Maori remains from U.S. expeditions held in the 1800s. Two of the preserved, tattooed Maori heads formerly owned by the institute had been purchased by an American, Charles Wilkes from the British, according to the Smithsonian.

Geez, man, I’m sorry to hear that. I have only dealt with depression at second hand, so I only have a vague inkling. I do know that the anxiety and related depression that affect Mrs FBW and The Boys has been amenable to treatment with SSRIs. If it’s been all your adult life, it sounds genetic/biochemical, rather than situational.

Oh, it’s genetic alright. I am truly my mother’s son.

Me, too. I’ve always suffered from feelings of inadequacy (and the accompanying Imposter Syndrome). My Mom used to tell me she could not for the life of her understand why I felt like that, since I was so handsome and smart, etc.

Then I found a letter her Dad wrote her when she went off to college, saying he couldn’t understand why she had feelings of inadequacy, because she was so pretty and smart, etc.

Then each of my sons told me they have feelings of inadequacy.

Genetics, man. It ain’t destiny, but it sure is close.

Man, that’s a hard thing to say, but now that you’ve said it hopefully you’ll find out telling people wasn’t as big of a deal as you might have expected. I really hope you get, and accept, all the support you need. (And please have patience with the people offering it. A bunch of people who don’t really know what to say or how to say it deluging you with offers of “help” is probably pretty annoying in some ways, but it’s all done out of genuine concern.)

So be well, and take care of yourself. We’d miss you, to say nothing of all the snow that would go unused.

Okay. But I have seen IKEA use that character before so it may actually be an item they sell.

Could be. You’d think I’d have memorized their entire catalog by now, since we have an Ikea 7 or 8 miles from here, but I’m afraid I haven’t. My knowledge of Swedish comes from puzzling my way through genealogical stuff and weaving stuff. Hardly encyclopedic.

If you (or any others) are routinely using any computer long after sundown, you may find this free program to be of interest: skytopia.com

SunsetScreen is a free Windows app (for personal use) which helps take the glare off your your screen in the evening. Scientific research has shown that melatonin - the chemical the brain makes late in the day - is reduced when exposed to blue light. By tempering this blue light, it becomes easier to wind down properly at night, and thus have a more restful sleep.

Whether you’re a morning lark or night owl, SunsetScreen allows you to set the time of the sunset and sunrise, so you can have full control over your sleep cycle.

For similar reasons, if you routinely watch TV late at night, you should look into whether your TV has a “color temperature” setting of some sort that you can tweek, to reduce the blue component somewhat.

Let’s keep the pile on going.

At the end of the day, all Donald Trump is is a guy who sucks the blood out of everything he’s involved with, leaving the dead remains behind for the suckers to clean up. If anyone thinks he’ll run a country any better, all I can say is you’re a moron.

While Trump’s Hotels burned, he made them pay for water.

As a businessman, Donald Trump gained fame as a gambling czar rivaling his renown as a developer. But a close examination of his record in gaming reveals that while Trump profited richly, his stock and bondholders could hardly have fared worse. It’s undeniable that Trump’s special arrangements with his casino company displayed his trademark creativity. Among the most imaginative deals was a package that gave him a bonus despite the fact that his casino empire was losing tens of millions of dollars a year, and an agreement to that had the casinos spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on Trump Ice bottled water for the mini-bars. That’s a lot of chips for flat aqua bottled in plastic.

……..

Trump Hotels and its successor, Trump Entertainment, filed for bankruptcy in late 2004, then again in early 2009, when Trump finally departed as chairman. The company’s travails weren’t over. It surrendered to chapter 11 a third time in 2014. It’s now a subsidiary of Icahn Enterprises, run by The Donald’s now friend, legendary financier Carl Icahn.

No amount of spin will make Trump’s dozen years at the helm of a Trump Hotels, the only public company Trump has ever run, look like anything but a flop that damaged thousands of shareholders, bondholders, and workers. The sole “winner” now packs arenas across America, mesmerizing tens of thousands of cheering fans with tales of his business triumphs.

re: #66 Anymouse

I wouldn’t have minded Clinton as veep. Bernie? Nope. No. No way. Fuck that.

349
ObserverArt  May 28, 2016 • 5:51:23pm

Are we starting to slowly see the media going a bit more in depth on Trump? Now that he is pretty much the GOP candidate (“They can’t take that away from me!”) the digging on Donald may finally be underway.

I know he likes to excuse everything about his past and even stuff he is saying and doing two days ago. If the media really gets into his shit hard he will be making so many flips-flops, back tracks and BS excuses it may just drown him.

He likes to answer everything said about him, I think he calls it hitting back. Well, that may be fine in Trump world until people realize it’s all you have if that is all they see and hear you do.

He could blow up and show a real bad side fighting against an onslaught of negative media. We may need that to happen ugly as it could be.

I almost would rather have a denier than someone like Petersen who admits that we may be causing it but thinks government should do nothing to stop it. I’ve met a lot of Libertarians who bemoan why they’re not taken more seriously politically. Well listen to yourselves more often.

Heh, just saw a commercial prior to a sportsball game on ESPN for the new Ark Park. Opening in July. Me being in Ohio, they must be working the region.

re: #301 GlutenFreeJesus

Bob Dole is a thing again. He’s telling the GOP to back Trump and is urging Trump to select Gingrich as VP. Wake me up when this is all over. Or maybe wake me up so this stops! I have no idea anymore.

I considered voting for Bob Dole for president.

But when I discovered Fred Malek’s role in Dole’s campaign, based upon what Malek did in the Nixon admin, it was Nope, Nope, & Nope.

[…] as special assistant from 1970-73 and deputy director of Nixon’s re-election campaign. Malek served as deputy chief of the Committee to Re-elect the President in 1972.[…]

(Some of you will remember CRP AKA CREEP)

In the first Nixon administration, Malek designed and directed the “Responsiveness Program”, a strategy to replace civil servants with Nixon supporters and to steer government resources to benefit Nixon’s 1972 re-election. According to the Senate Watergate report, Malek wrote in a 1972 memo to Haldeman that someone was needed to “take the lead in the program to politicize Departments and Agencies” and to “supervise the patronage operation and closely monitor the grantmanship operation.” In advocating the plan, Malek wrote of “substantial risks” to politicizing the Executive Branch and expressed concern that the plan would “undoubtably backfire” if made public; therefore he recommended that “to minimize any links to the President, there should be no directions on this project in writing.”

No because the first amendment but if a lawyer said what he said he would be sanctioned or even perhaps disbarred. Lawyers have a duty to show respect to the Court, a politician who gives a fuck about America would show that respect also (It’s not about respect for the person but the institution) The worse thing is Fuckface Von Clownstick’s passive aggression with plausible deniability threat of intimidation. This Judge (and also the plaintiff, he gave the woman’s name)is going to get death threats from Trumps goons. It’s probably already happening. He knows where the line is and he goes right up to it. My big problem with Libertarianism is Libertarians talk a great deal about individual rights but don’t believe in a strong enough government to protect those rights.

Trump quote of the day

Mr. Trump dismisses the labels used by those like Mr. Weld, a longtime Republican now mounting a quixotic campaign for vice president as a Libertarian. “I don’t talk about his alcoholism,” Mr. Trump said through a spokeswoman, “so why would he talk about my foolishly perceived fascism? See, you haven’t been paying attention.

When anybody left of center thinks wages are too low, not a lot of good jobs, it’s hard to get ahead, especially if it’s a non-white person making that complaint, “you should have gone to school. train for a better job. it’s your own fault. you deserve nothing. it’s not the government’s problem.”

But if somebody right of center thinks wages are too low, not a lot of good jobs, it’s hard to get ahead, especially if it’s a white person making that complaint, “it’s the immigrants, and china, and muslims, and affirmative action and political correctness. you’ve been screwed, and Trump will make the government solve your problem.”

See how that works?

Especially in an economically depressed area, or fields with generally low-skilled workers it will be an outright race to the bottom by companies. Without somebody who hold some power defining what is and isn’t permitted, the employer has all the cards. The worker can’t just ‘go find another job’ when they are few and far between.

Skilled workers with easily transferable skills, who aren’t living from paycheck to paycheck praying the car battery makes it one more month don’t face the same thing at all. They have, by dint of their skillset and resources, the ability to negotiate with the employer, and for them, the threat to walk is a real tool.

As for schools / job training, which party is busy cutting the funding as fast as they can?

Libertarianism fails to grasp that laws and regulations exist precisely because people, and to an even greater extent businesses are NOT self-policing. Exactly. I’ve got an ex-coworker who is a trust fund baby, and who’s married a woman who travels and does a lot of high level Six Sigma training and implementation. In other words, he’s never had to work, and money is just something that is there. He’s a hard-core libertarian, doesn’t understand why people don’t just ‘better’ themselves.

Our friendship came to an end when, in a fit of anger, I said something very much like “Not everyone is born into money, then marries a woman who is wealthy, and is more interested in having her West Highland Terriers groomed than ever having children”.

That statement, while true, was not viewed as constructive. I guess I still had some work to do on my soft skills.

We’re not supposed to mention, to the BernieBros or the Trumpistas or the Glibertarians, that the very minute the Civil Rights Act passed, even though neither party changed their economic policy or foreign policy AT ALL… millions of previously D’s suddenly became R’s. It was like magic. It had nothing to do with bigotry, of course not, how dare we call them racist, it was entirely coincidental that exactly at that moment they had a sudden ephiphany regarding tax rates or public schooling or college subsidies or unions or FHA loans.

Also, just found something interesting on Jane Sanders.

Bernie Sanders has described his wife as “one of his key advisers”,[2] and he has employed her at various times as “an administrative assistant, spokeswoman, policy adviser, chief of staff, and media buyer”.[2] In a 1996 article in The Washington Post, she was credited with helping him draft “more than 50 pieces of legislation”.

1st Article that comes from.

The 2nd Article.

It seems she has made herself part of the political and law-making process for Sanders. Does that open her up to criticism in regards to the campaign?

The fact that people who look nothing like them will have to die for their revolution doesn’t bother them at all. That those same people are the ones who stood in the way and refused to cosign onto their revolution in their eyes makes those people eminently worth sacrificing. The sociopathic lack of basic empathy was something that before this election cycle I’d almost exclusively ascribed to the conservative end of the political spectrum. That’s fanfrickintastic, thanks. Around fifteen years ago, Booker T & the MG’s played a free show in my NYC neighborhood, the first half comprised of their instrumental classics, with some nice anecdotes thrown in here and there, and the second half of the program was the tunes they cut with Otis Redding, with Sharon Jones filling in on the vocals.

That was a show I will never forget.

If I get to dive, great, but not going to worry if I don’t. The visibility is about 10 feet at the depths we’ll be training at, due to the rain that come through. Gets better down deeper, but it’s still not good according to the dive reports I got today.

Cannot presume to have walked in your shoes, but I’ve known depression, so I hope this helps.

From Harvard Medical School: Blue light has a dark side

Light at night is bad for your health, and exposure to blue light emitted by electronics and energy-efficient lightbulbs may be especially so.

Until the advent of artificial lighting, the sun was the major source of lighting, and people spent their evenings in (relative) darkness. Now, in much of the world, evenings are illuminated, and we take our easy access to all those lumens pretty much for granted.

But we may be paying a price for basking in all that light. At night, light throws the body’s biological clock—the circadian rhythm—out of whack. Sleep suffers. Worse, research shows that it may contribute to the causation of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

But not all colors of light have the same effect. Blue wavelengths—which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood—seem to be the most disruptive at night. And the proliferation of electronics with screens, as well as energy-efficient lighting, is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown.

Remember how many generations have been watching color TVs. That wouldn’t be a problem except that the manufacturers, in a quest for brightness at any and all costs, have set the color temperature of their sets at 9,000, 10,000, even 12,000 Kº when NTSC standard is 6500 Kº. (Remember your Stefan-Boltzmann law: luminosity goes up with the 4th power of the temperature.) So it’s as if our sun were Rigel.

In addition to making blonde hair look green if you adjust the tint so skin tones are normal, what these extremely hot color temperatures* mean is that everything on the screen is really just different shades of blue, as you can tell by facing away from the screen in a darkened room. That may contribute to the effect they talk about.

So I stayed in tonight after being out far too late last night seeing a friend’s band, and then helping him tear down his drum set. Flipping channels and what do I see? “Celebrity Bowling”. Why am I just finding out about this show now? Michael Douglas is wearing a Seinfeld-esqe puffy shirt!

Can’t find that episode, but here’s Frankie Avalon and Rory Calhoun. This is the greatest thing ever.

Mama Cass was The Best!

I’ve been listening to a good bootleg of her best tunes today and what a wonderful singer she was. And of course she passed away way too young.

And I’ll bet she was a lot of fun to hang with.

re: #488 No Depression

Libertarianism isn’t all bad. It can serve as a bridge from conservatism to liberalism. That’s what happened in my case, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

She was originally a Ronald Reagan supporter (but was too young to vote for him at the time), while my first election I voted for Jimmy Carter’s second term.

I occasionally ping on her past support for “wrong-wing” candidates (rather than right-wing candidates.

On the depression discussions, at one time I was diagnosed as bipolar. It was awful, but as it turned out, while the symptoms were the same the diagnosis was wrong.

I had a psychiatrist actually read the DSM at one point, and he noted a required clinical test be done before that diagnosis is made: one for thyroid function. He did it (several years after I was put on lithium and other meds).

Turned out my thyroid gland was functioning at idle speed. The psychiatrist sent me to another physician, they got the thyroid level up to normal, and I was removed from the psychiatric meds. Been about eight years now and things seem okay to me.

My wife used to be a Libertarian (was a candidate’s campaign finance manager), but she got better.

Remember, if Libertarianism lasts more than four hours, call your physician.

That last is on the decline, though. Trumpism is currently much more popular as a method of ‘male enhancement’.

My wife planned our trip to Manitoba over the time of the GOP convention in Cleveland, as at the time there was still a free-for-all on the GOP side for President.

She still wants to be out of the country just in case so we will still be in Churchill then.

You’re going in a Smart car, right? I saw one the other day that still had a permit taped in the back window, so I guess he just hadn’t gotten his American plates yet, but in the strips they leave in the bumpers for European-style thin strip plates, he had stickers that said: “Hoser, Eh!” That could be you if you decide to defect…..

I thought it was pretty good preaching, e.g. Marjoe effect.

Guess I misunderstood his point.

I don’t think you misunderstood him at all, but you may have underestimated his scam. Confessions of children of con artists has been a profitable arm of the publishing industry since at least the seventies. Designing such tomes helped pay my rent and pay the liquor bill back in the day. Now, if I’d only been based in the Midwest I’d be filthy rich.

When we went to Canada last year, the border official in Saskatchewan was amazed we’d driven a Smart from Nebraska.

He also ran our registration to see if we really owned it. (I have a Gold Star Family plate with registration number 87.) He apologised afterwards for delaying us (famous Canadian nice) as he thought we might have been driving a stolen state vehicle with that low number, then asked “are there really only 87 cars in Nebraska?”

Coming back, the US customs official in Montana wanted to know if we had any guns - like I would use a Smart to smuggle guns into Montana from Canada.

Bot a 40” HD non-smart TV recently ($200) with a 15pin VGA input (for PC) for use as a monitor (or TV) at my computer(s) station. During setup, saw an option for “Store” vs “Home” use. The description for the Store config indicated that the backlight would be significantly brighter than normal, and the power-saving features would be disabled. Chose the Home option. Don’t know whether it was a one-time-only menu option. If so, that sould be a consideration for anyone who buys a “demo” unit.

Yes, “Warm and Cool” lighting as used in advertising/marketing have quite the opposite meanings from their usage in the hard sciences.

Because most of the things that we encountered during our evolutionary history that could burn us were red, orange or yellow, whereas some common things that cools us off (water, ice, snow) often appear to be blue or bluish.

It’s not unconstitutional, it just means they would forfeit New York’s Electoral Votes, which they weren’t going to win anyway.

I stand corrected, I think. But this is a strange way of understanding the 12th amendment. With this reasoning one could have, say, a thirty year old candidate for whom the electoral college could not vote. Or would you hold that such could be voted for but couldn’t take office, and similar conundrums?

I don’t know where the age business comes in….

The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves;….

All it says is that the electors from New York, for example, can’t cast their votes for a President and Vice President who are both from New York.

Yes, but like the age requirement is it so that votes could not be cast for someone younger than 35 or that such votes would be invalid. It’s splitting hairs.

No one younger than 35 (well, as of January 20 after the election, I think) is allowed to run for President, so Electors would never have an opportunity to cast their votes for someone under 35.

He’d been living in Texas for some years. Just before the election, he switched his driver’s license to Wyoming and put his house up for sale. Some voters challenged the election, but the case was dismissed. The 2000 election was a clusterfuck in every imaginable way.
