Trump Says Reporters Questioning His Racist Comments Are the Real Racists

“You guys are getting stupid information from people that aren’t so smart”
Politics • Views: 44,750

On a conference call today, Donald Trump continued his racist attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel (of course), and said the reporters asking questions about it are the real racists.

A clearly irritated Trump told his supporters to attack journalists who ask questions about the lawsuit and his comments about the judge.

“The people asking the questions—those are the racists,” Trump said. “I would go at ‘em.”

Suggesting a broader campaign against the media, Trump said the campaign should also actively criticize television reporters. “I’d let them have it,” he said, referring to those who Trump portrayed as hypocrites.

Trump also urged his followers and surrogates to step up the hate campaign against the judge, but wait… it gets even better.

Because when former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer chimed in to say Trump’s own campaign staff had sent out a memo telling surrogates not to discuss the case against Trump University, Trump angrily responded and insulted the female staffer who sent out the memo:

When former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer interrupted the discussion to inform Trump that his own campaign had asked surrogates to stop talking about the lawsuit, Trump repeatedly demanded to know who sent the memo, and immediately overruled his staff.

“Take that order and throw it the hell out,” Trump said.

Told the memo was sent by Erica Freeman, a staffer who circulates information to surrogates, Trump said he didn’t know her. He openly questioned how the campaign could defend itself if supporters weren’t allowed to talk.

“Are there any other stupid letters that were sent to you folks?” Trump said. “That’s one of the reasons I want to have this call, because you guys are getting sometimes stupid information from people that aren’t so smart.”

Trump is getting more and more out of control, even dissing his own campaign staff for trying to talk him down off the ledge. It’s a real spectacle.

How can the act of asking a person about his positions be racist?

How do you get there from here? Honest question. I would like to understand what I will charitably describe as a “thought process”.

My problem is just how much will this simply make people like him more? Because I keep coming away with the idea that the fever with Trump is emblematic of an increasing tendency by Americans for deifying Assholes. Sure, they hate assholes they know personally, but they seem to absolutely go ga-ga for them when they have an opportunity to give them power or adoration from afar. Like equating someone’s assholishness with strength and steadfastness.

The question someone from the press should ask him is “What does the word racist mean to you?” I’m pretty sure for trump, it was just the word that popped into his head as he was finishing the sentence. He’d heard it enough and this was its moment.

Saturday night I watched Naked Gun 33 1/3 with my son. He’s 20 and has never viewed. He has dyslexia and couldn’t stop laughing at the scene below. Hearing my son roar with laughter takes much of the sting out of this terribly depressing election season. And Beer. And yes, he’s old enough to drink my beer (Don’t worry he slept on the coach).

There was a poll last year that showed about 1/3 of white millenials have negative views towards minorities, about the same percentage as the boomer generation. The one saving point is that this group is getting smaller as a fraction of the total population.

The Trump campaign is determined to burn everything down on its way to Cleveland, and then the general elections in November. He’s incapable of telling friend from foe, and can’t get out of his own way.

Good.

Let him burn the GOP to the ground. They need to see the insanity they’ve unleashed through years upon years of foisting irrational hate, fear, and abject ignorance on their supporters through their media outlets. When people think that Obama is the worst president in history overseeing the worst economy ever, you start to see how delusional these people truly are. Let’s just ignore what the state of the global economy was in November 2008. Now look where we are now.

By every objective measure, the economy is doing far better.

Are there pockets where the economy has lagged? Absolutely.

And a good deal of those are in states where the GOP has refused to expand the ACA, refused to raise the minimum wage, refused to engage in anything but tax cuts for corporations or the wealthy, putting the squeeze on everyone else, resulting in cuts to core governmental services, like education, roads, and the like.

This is the GOP mantra, and it’s anything but compassionate conservatism.

It’s pure unadulterated bile - and Trump is the GOP id and ego, which is why he so easily vanquished the so-called experienced politicians from Perry to Bush to Cruz and Rubio and all the lesser nitwits.

Now, he stands on the precipice of the convention, and he’s attacking media outlets for quoting him verbatim on his idiocy. He thinks he can win this battle, when the media knives are now finally out after all this time. Heck, he’s willing to burn the GOP too, even as the GOP is still supporting him - see McConnell and Ryan and their talk of backing the nominee (who is still the racist asshat Trump).

This is where the GOP is.

Yeah, those kind of things back up my worries. And while it’s true the share of the total population is getting smaller, it feels like between the media fervor and new, repeated institutional barriers constantly popping up, that might not translate into an electoral shift for years. It scares me, and my personal advocacy continues to run into people who shoot far away to the right out of spite, and folks who shrug and simply say ‘they’ve got a point’ and pull the ‘both sides same thing’ bullshit.

I’ve lost so much of my will for politics because of how impenetrable it continues to feel and yet I feel compelled to keep following it because I have a duty to keep informed. It’s become a bit of a depressive masochistic spiral, and the Trump phenomenon has just made it feel even worse.

Racism is a learned behaviour. Children are not naturally racist, they come by it from their parents. Thus, if baby boomer parents are racists, the odds go way up their millennial children are too.

Of course not all baby boomers are racists. Even growing up in the South (Virginia and Maryland) during Jim Crow, I did not turn into a racist because my parents were not, and they countered the local narrative.

And even if millennial children are racist if they learn if from their boomer parents, it can be mitigated via a college education because they’ll be more likely to interact with a diverse community and gain the intellectual tools needed to examine their biases and address them. This will of course only work if the millennial children are naturally curious and open-minded, but hopefully the numbers of minorities and “enlightened” whites (for lack of a better term) will outnumber the racist whites.

Been there done that. I was from out of town, somewhat — this was on a visit to Chattanooga a while ago and I went in to have a look around but there was no point in me buying anything since getting it home on the plane would be a problem, ditto for putting it on my Firearms Licence.

Schilling is like so many wingnuts. They dream up a scary liberal scenario in their fevered tiny brains and convince themselves it is reality and then get all pissed off when someone tells them they are nuts.

Then they get fired or whatever for being blockheads and making others look bad. That leads them to claim it was liberals who have labeled them and make it fit their scenario.

And then it gets rinsed and repeated.

There really is no way to get them back to reality they are too far gone. It is an illness.

I’m the liberal. I presume not.

I do walk in the gun shop occasionally (it is right next door to my house). Not so much to buy stuff (though I have), mostly to chat with the owner.

…and I told him “home defence: a shotgun is about as sporting as a water hose and I don’t want to miss.”

Shotguns don’t work that way. Use one indoors and the shot cone and wad will quite happily chew its way through two sheets of drywall into the kid’s bedroom next door. They’re not magic weapons — a typical #6 shot pattern is about 3 feet at 75 yards, at indoor distances the cone will be not much wider than the muzzle.

Yeah, used to see that a lot when I was actively blogging and tied into things while in law school. I’ve come to believe you can’t really separate social and economic issues in that economic liberty means social liberty and vice versa, which is why I still consider myself libertarian. I also don’t believe you can have liberty without government (I think the term I used in law school a few times was “Hamiltonian”), which is why I also consider myself to be a center left libertarian (I used to joke that I was a center right libertarian and one day woke up to realize that the political spectrum had shifted me to the left without me having to change any of my positions).

Part of this is probably because the two parties in the US differ from each other much more significantly on social issues than on economic issues.

Need a reminder. Did not TRUMP® either say, or has been quoted saying, he never apologizes?

I seem to remember something like that. If he did, there is an indication of how he will never back down on this Mexican Judge imbroglio.

In some ways that could be very entertaining, but with Trump it always has the chance of revving up his supporters so they can shout down the media, Republican politicians, etc., who can cower under attack. Then he bulls his way into another news cycle about something else, even if he has to create it.

I also believe that “family values” should include the ability to raise and educate a family on one’s salary. If we need to have both parents working full-time plus in order to make ends meet, there is very little time left over for active parenting and imparting “family values” to their children.

This might come as a bit of a shock to non-lawyers, but typically plaintiffs have a bias against defendants in lawsuits. Mostly because, you know, they think the defendant has wronged them in some way.

It’s a complicated thing, so I could understand why someone like Hannity (or anyone willing to work for Trump) would have a hard time understanding it. (/half sarc)

I thought Rick Perry was going to walk away with the nomination in 2012, and Scott Walker in 2016…

I still don’t understand what happened with Rick Perry in 2012. I know he had some bad debate performances, but since when is that a show-stopper for Republicans?

Yes, and then there were jokes like:

She rolls over and plays dead while he sits up and begs.

How many WASPs do you need to change a light bulb?

He did. IIRC the most amusing was Perry had a stump speech line about getting rid of three cabinet-level departments, but when asked he could only name two.

That by itself shouldn’t have been a deal-breaker. Now that I’m thinking about it, the deal-breaker was probably Perry’s moment of sanity/decency on illegal immigration.

The GOP clown show of 2012 was so much better than the GOP train wreck of this cycle.

He came across as dumb. And that ‘Three Departments’ thing really just confirmed it. He not only forgot the departments, he didn’t work a clean exit from the problem.

He was the Fred Thompson of 2012. In 2008, Fred Thompson was gonna DOMINATE! He was an actor, so he could talk, but he’d also been a Senator, and even Republican Counsel on the Watergate hearings. He’d be smart, articulate, folksy. Nobody else would stand a chance! His poll numbers rose till he was in first place.

Then he announced his candidacy, and his poll numbers started dropping. I think he was out before Super Tuesday.

Scott Walker, same thing - far more attractive as an idea than in the actual flesh.

The Name
Many people incorrectly translate the name, “La Raza,” as “the race.” While it is true that one meaning of “raza” in Spanish is indeed “race,” in Spanish, as in English and any other language, words can and do have multiple meanings. As noted in several online dictionaries, “La Raza” means “the people” or “the community.”
Translating our name as “the race” is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect. “Hispanic” is an ethnicity, not a race. As anyone who has ever met a Dominican American, Mexican American, or Spanish American can attest, Hispanics can be and are members of any and all races.
The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people” or, according to some scholars, as “the Hispanic people of the New World.” The term was coined by Mexican scholar José Vasconcelos to reflect the fact that the people of Latin America are a mixture of many of the world’s races, cultures, and religions. In contrast, the term “Hispanic” has its origins in the 1970 U.S. Census, and the term “Latino” was officially adopted in 1997 by the U.S. Government in the ethnonym “Hispanic or Latino.”
Mistranslating “La Raza” to mean “the race” implies that it is a term meant to exclude others. In fact, the full term coined by Vasconcelos, “La Raza Cósmica,” meaning the “cosmic people,” was developed to reflect not purity but the mixture inherent in the Hispanic people. This is an inclusive concept, meaning that Hispanics share with all other peoples of the world a common heritage and destiny.
And this is not just SDLRLA’s interpretation. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, “La Raza” means:
“…Mexicans or Mexican Americans considered as a group, sometimes extending to all Spanish-speaking people of the Americas.”
Furthermore, MSNBC’s online Spanish-English website, Encarta, translates the term this way:
“Hispanic Spanish-speakers in the Americas: Mexicans, Mexican Americans, or Spanish-speaking people of the Americas, considered as a group.”
The Free Dictionary, available online, similarly finds that the term “La Raza”:
“…embodies the notion that traditional, exclusive concepts of race and nationality can be transcended in the name of humanity’s common destiny.”

Obama called Bernie Sanders Sunday: CBS News

President Obama called Sen. Bernie Sanders Sunday afternoon, according to a source familiar with the conversation, reports CBS News’ Julianna Goldman.

While the source didn’t characterize the conversation, Sanders spokesman told CBS News’ Kylie Atwood that the two have spoken on multiple occasions.

The call between the two lasted 30-45 minutes, CBS News’ Nancy Cordes reported. Sanders also spoke with the president by phone in mid-May.

The Vermont senator took the president’s call on the side of the road in the financial district in San Francisco, at around 2:30 p.m. ET. Atwood said that as the press bus drove by, Sanders could be seen standing on Market Street, legal pad in hand, as he talked on a cell phone.

Atwood asked Sanders about the conversation Tuesday, but he declined to say much about it.
