I don’t get how you have a contested convention when there are only two candidates. You hold a vote, the one with the most votes wins. The only way it could be contested is if there were a tie.

Uh he didn’t force a contested convention and he’s hardly little known. He’s been in Congress since before the Clintons got to Washington. Man Sirota’s such an insufferable prick. Oh and by the way Dave, Obama actually beat Clinton but unlike Bernie, Obama’s not a petty asshole.

Gov. Chris Christie’s approval rating is at an all-time low of 27 percent, according to the latest Monmouth University poll.

I will grant that Bernie did well better than he was expected to but I will also point out that he also did a lot of things that were very shitty too.

Feels like just yesterday he was coasting to re-election. I bet New Jersey voters wish they had that one back.

I already walked them twice in the rain today. It’s my ass that doesn’t want to get wet, or have wet dogs to deal with at 1AM.
We caught a hole. I’m getting pretty good at using the weather radar to predict when the gaps will cross over us.

I like how they think committing fraud and mischief is somehow going to make people eager to switch to Bernie. I really hope the young people who have worked for the Sanders campaign learned a valuable lesson about politics and that’s being a condescending asshole to those who disagree with you is no way to win allies. I was actually quite sympathetic towards Bernie early but he alienated the hell out of me when he acted like a condescending jerk- You can’t be progressive and moderate at the same time*

Hockey stuff under the spoiler.

My Sharks lost but I went and hung out with some friends to see the game anyway. Ended up in the live doodle comic one of them does. A good time even if the game didn’t go our way.

Have to drop the ballots off at the polling place tomorrow, along with a few errands. I vote anyway regardless of what the news says.

As one Republican who served in the George W. Bush administration tells me, “The vast majority of Republicans I know — the foreign policy specialists — are incredibly depressed and a little embarrassed. Most of all, we’re concerned about what a Trump administration would mean for U.S. interests and the security of our nation. I have not yet met a Republican who says they would work for a Trump administration.”

Would you work for Donald Trump?

I was out watching the clip here of John Oliver blowing away Oprah Winfrey’s record for the most money given away on TV with his medical debt buying company he set up to expose the sleazy industry of debt collection.

John Oliver is a national treasure (even if he is from the UK). Everything from Net Neutrality, his Church of the Perpetual Exemption, to setting up a debt collection company on-line legally in Mississippi for $50.

I know you must worry, but take it from one who’s been through more tropical storms than he can reliably remember. A tropical storm isn’t a hurricane, or anything like one. A tropical storm is mainly just a bad day for golf. Unless you’re accustomed to golfing in Ireland, in which case you merely call it “soft weather.”

Yeah, I have been through my share of tropical storms and hurricanes, both on land and at sea. That said, flooding and tornadoes are the principal problems associated with tropical storms.

I am now convinced that Trump is going to pick him as his VP.

Ever since The Outlaw Jersey Whale burned all his bridges and endorsed Trump, he’s been the obedient, subservient lapdog. Goes where he’s told, says what he’s told to say, and then shuts up the rest of the time. Trump rewarded his loyalty by holding a fundraiser and getting all his campaign debts paid off, and we haven’t heard a peep out of Christie since. Even now, with Trump on the warpath against Judge Curiel, there’s been nothing at all.

With the rest of the GOP field seemingly pushing back against Trump’s idiocy with the judge, there won’t be anyone left for the VP slot, and Christie has nothing to lose. He’ll never get another term in office, so why not go out as the VP on a losing ticket?

“BUT LA RAZA! ELEVENTY!” seems to be the standard talking point from the rubes. Even when you show them that the group the judge belongs to is as threatening as a Rotary Club meeting, they still insist that the judge is unfit to hear the Trump University cases because reasons.

None of Trump’s drooling idiot followers can ever explain why Judge Curiel’s ethnicity prevents him from hearing two class action fraud cases, but they’ll keep charging at that windmill over and over and over and over insisting that the Judge has a conflict of interest because MEXICAN ZOMG. They can’t because the Supreme Court has already ruled that race is not a disqualifier for hearing cases or serving on juries. They’re just making stuff up because their low-info base doesn’t know any better, and if they informed them properly they could not grift from them.

Well, if you’ve been through a hurricane at sea, your experience exceeds mine, since I’ve only endured them on land. Got a sailor’s tale for us? As for the tornadoes around tropical storms, they tend to be snappy little shingle rippers rather than the town killers you undoubtedly must be familiar with out there in Nebraska.

One tale: Aboard the USS America (CV-66), we took to the eye of a hurricane to cross the Atlantic to see if we could hide from Soviet surveillance.

There were a whole lot of sick people during the crossing. A destroyer following in our wake to smooth the water would disappear below the aft deck, then pop up above the carrier.

We lost a number of HF antennas off the side of the ship, and there were salt streaks halfway down the length of the flight deck.

I have a stomach constitution that allows me to eat while walking on bulkheads, but there were an awful lot of sick people for a week or so.

Chow in the chow hall was interesting, because you could not keep your dinner tray on the tables. The chow hall (after a couple disastrous meals) chose to serve box meals instead.

From my genealogy research, I know you have to give a reason for obtaining a birth or death certificate from the public records office. In Indiana, as in most states, you have to state a family relationship to obtain a copy.

So Chuck is Mexican, too?

secure.in.gov

I’m hazy on the legal aspects of lying to obtain a death certificate, but for most people, it would certainly be unethical. And considering the target of this witch hunt is a federal judge, such actions would be unwise.

So, either someone besides Chuckie obtained those copies for him, or he obtained them himself. No matter what, they would have had to lie on the application form that they had a direct interest.

The death certificate isn’t going to say citizenship status or anything like that anyhow. I’ve seen enough of Pennsyvania death certificates to know that. Yikes! That’s awful. It reminds me of a Post Doc I used to work with, years ago. There had been an earthquake in Alaska, and so there was a Tsunami Warning for the California coast. He said, “Wow! Wouldn’t it be cool to go to Ocean Beach and watch that come in?”

He was from Indiana. He didn’t know from oceans.

The state registrar’s decision is subject to review by the state department or a court under this section.
(2) The state department may permit the use of data contained in vital statistical records for research purposes only, but no

Or, alternatively, send Chuck C Johnson’s claim from GotNews to the Indiana state prosecutor along with the link to the law.

Some records are also not available for recently deceased people. Curiel’s dad, for example, died in 1964. His naturalization records may still be protected. The 1940 census is available, because 75 years have passed. The 1950 census is still under wraps.

I’m seriously bothered by Rage Furby’s obtaining those vital records, because it’s not only unethical (normal for him) but probably illegal to release them to someone without a “direct interest.” It’s also an invasion of the Curiel family’s privacy.

Remember the fake “Commonwealth of Kenya” birth certificate that circulated claiming Barack Obama was born there (when Kenya was still Rhodesia and a British colony)?

On the other hand, if Chuck C Johnson has obtained (or tried to obtain) the actual death certificates, the state attorney’s office should be notified, as that would be a crime under Indiana statues. (Might be nice to see Mr. Johnson sporting horizontal stripes in an Indiana jail.)

I’m guessing he is lying.

Remember the fake “Commonwealth of Kenya” birth certificate that circulated claiming Barack Obama was born there (when Kenya was still Rhodesia and a British colony)?

I’m way late to the party, but Kenya was never Rhodesia. Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi.

Here’s an actual Trump rant circulating on FB:

Here’s why we want Trump, yes he’s a bit of an ass, yes he’s an egomaniac, but we don’t care. The country is a mess because politicians suck, the Republican Party is two-faced & gutless, and illegals are everywhere. We want it all fixed! We don’t care that Trump is crude, we don’t care that he insults people, we don’t care that he has been friendly with Hillary, we don’t care that he has changed positions, we don’t care that he’s been married 3 times, we don’t care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O’Donnell, we don’t care that he doesn’t know the name of some Muslin [sic] terrorist.

This country is weak, bankrupt, our enemies are making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegals, we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don’t even recognize the country we were born and raised in; “AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED” and Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want.

We’re sick of politicians, sick of the Democratic Party, Republican Party, and sick of illegals. We just want this thing fixed. Trump may not be a saint, but he doesn’t have lobbyist money holding him, he doesn’t have political correctness restraining him, all you know is that he has been very successful, a good negotiator, he has built a lot of things, and he’s also not a politician, he’s not a cowardly politician. And he says he’ll fix it. And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar.

Also we don’t care if the guy has bad hair.

We just want those raccoons gone, out of our house, NOW.

That’s the strategery behind someone using a flamethrower to exterminate a single spider in a home.

It shows a complete and utter lack of knowledge about how things actually work, or what politics is actually about. It’s absolutism and leads down a path to authoritarianism, which is how Trump sees himself. He thinks he can do no wrong, and he has no filter. That’s how his supporters want it. They want the ability to say the things Trump says without the repercussions.

The Huffington Post Pollster shows an average 51-41 lead for Hillary in national primary polling, within the MOE of the 55-43 margin of the national popular vote to date. Also, Bernie had a 90%+ recognition rating before the Iowa caucus. If he did it all over again, the results would be pretty much the same.

And, of the 6 Bernie Bros they interviewed, only 2 said they would vote for Hillary if she was the nominee. Sad x2

Yeah I fucked up by checking Facebook. FeeltheBern has turned into FeeltheWhine. I am sorry. I wish the AP had held off on it and waited for the primaries to happen today but you know what, I’m tired of being told I’m not a real progressive because I am not 100% in love with Bernie Sanders, I’m tired of being told that I’m some establishment hack because I don’t think it’s wise to hand the keys to our party to a seventy four year old who quite honestly has done less for Democratic candidates than I have and one that doesn’t believe in campaigning for other candidates. You want to be disappointed? That’s your right but you chose to embrace a very flawed candidate. He did very well despite his flaws. Take some pride in that instead of whining about the big bad establishment. And honestly Bernie would have had more SDs if he had actually showed that he cared about working with other people and not having the biggest progressive dick in the Congressional classroom.

I like how the BBs on my timeline are acting like the DNC is this center right machine. I don’t think a center right party puts Barney Frank, Elijah Cummings, and Barbara Lee on its platform committee. There are some ways that I do wish the DNC was more to the left but at the same time, I think the actual left is clueless as shit how to run an actual political party. Listen, the New Deal and Great Society programs were great, they were also in a team where racial minorities struggled to get access to many of the same government programs. The reason we had the anti government backlash is quite frankly te white working class voters that Bernie wants to bring back to the party had a shit fit about other people having the same benefits they did. Not all of course but enough of them did to the point where white working class voters vote for the Republicans these days as a group.

This primary season has really made it clear that the left has both a Wingnut Welfare machine of its own and a purity caucus that would rather keep the issues than solve them. In addition, all too many of today’s young people (who won’t get off my lawn) would rather snark about the world than actually do anything to change it.

It’s always been there unfortunately. I mean what pisses me off about is how they think they can claim the mantle of the left for themselves. I’m staunchly liberal. I’m also happy that Clinton and not Sanders is going to the Democratic nominee. So many of these people think the Democratic Party only exists as a tool for them to move to the left at their will and then the second the party does something, they can abandon it. If they want to act like that, I’m all for the Dem Party honchos telling them go to hell. You want this to be your party then you don’t get to act like a toddler every time something doesn’t go your way.

My cardiac surgeon who replaced my valve. His name is Chris Cook MD, but I refer to him as Dr. Billy Jack. He did my wife’s double bypass a year ago after her heart attack. After I left pre-op from her I went to the waiting room to wait out the procedure. A door opens on the other side of the waiting room and in walks a surgeon (he was dressed like one at least, which it being a hospital I didn’t think much of it). When I focused on his face my immediate though is, here comes Billy Jack. He walks up to me and introduces himself as Dr. Cook, the surgeon that would be doing my wife’s procedure. From that point on he has been Dr. Billy Jack, a kickass surgeon.

I mean it’s okay if you have a legit gripe with that system but there’s lots of double standard this campaign has had.

Apparently Bernie fans are just as bad with reading as with math.

Yeah, Bernie’s going to somehow get 882 out of 930 delegates up for grabs today (that’s what the graphic actually states). And then turn over the supers to his side, when they’re not going to override the popular vote that has given Hillary a commanding lead in delegates.

The rest of it is attempting to reframe the delegate math, leaving out a few minor details - like how Hillary gets a majority of the pledged delegates after today’s races are done. Supers do count, and counting them as they’ve always done provides the same result - Hillary wins in a historic fashion.

Bernie hasn’t had a chance to win since Super Tuesday and can’t make a case for the nomination since he has not gotten closer than being 200 delegates down since Super Tuesday. That’s some momentum.

But I preach to the choir here.

Presidential campaigns are a slow torture. Imagine being behind for three months, but there’s a possibility you could win it all, as long as everything went your way. And then, imagine winning contests but winning actually reduced your chance of earning the nomination. I bet it eats at the best of us. It did Clinton in 2008, and we saw it with Michigan and Florida.

Wipe out the SDs and Bernie still loses, have only open primaries and Bernie still loses, the only way Bernie would have been able to win would have been to have caucuses everywhere. You know what? I don’t feel bad for them at all. They chose to make enemies with people who had been big parts of the Democratic coalition for a long time. They chose to insult Clinton Democratic primary voters by calling them sell outs. When Obama ran against Clinton, Clinton had a lot of endorsements including a lot from the African-American community, Obama’s campaign didn’t bitch. They worked and that’s why Barack Obama was nominated and then became President. He worked for it. Bernie didn’t want to do the hard work of building relationships, working as a team player, and working with other Democrats to get nominated. This loss is on Bernie. Be mad at him not the big bad establishment and maybe find a better standard bearer than an old man who just became a Democrat from a state whose demographics aren’t even close to resembling what the US’s are.

Wellesley this weekend released audio of Hillary’s 1969 Commencement speech.

The speech is also a reminder that Clinton’s individual political talent and interest predates her two decades as sidekick to her husband. She made the front page of the next morning’s Boston Globe, which wrote in a headline that Senator Brooke was “upstaged” by a senior who “challenged his views.” The young Hillary Rodham who gave that speech, and who you hear in this clip, wouldn’t meet Bill Clinton for another two years.

So, y’know, if anybody thinks her achievements are all about nepotism.

Graham is pretty much the Blackfish of NeverJoffreyTrump. Slightly more interesting is this:

Michael Reagan, a son of former President Ronald Reagan, tweeted Monday that he won’t vote for Donald Trump and doesn’t think his late father would have supported the presumptive GOP nominee.

My husband coined the term Neo-Progressives; people who are socialists without the democratic. They don’t believe in the democratic process, you know, voting and all that stuff. What other people think and want doesn’t matter.

They’re gonna run rings around him and, sooner or later, he’ll have a complete meltdown in front of the entire nation and take the GOP with him. It was a serious error in judgement for so many Republicans to endorse him and it’s gonna cost them.

Clinton’s already hammering Trump and has been all while fending off the Bernie bot ankle biters. That’s only going to intensify even further as the nomination is secured and the support coalesces behind her.

Trump doesn’t know the first thing about running a campaign, and it’s showing. He doesn’t have a ground game in place, while Hillary’s sharpening hers going into the generals. She’s already been transitioning to the generals in primary states that have already voted. That’s a significant issue since GOTV is key.

Trump thinks that Clinton will be a pushover like the rest of the clown bus that Trump faced (including Huckabee whose odious comments show just how out of touch from reality he is). He doesn’t realize that in a 2-person race, there’s no one else who he can attack and Clinton has no reason to try and peel off core GOP voters so she’s free to attack Trump’s core racism, bigotry, and hate, to say nothing of his fact-free diatribes about, well, everything.

While the rest of the GOP primary nitwits were trying to be coy in attacking Trump over his positions without trying to lose out on his potential voters (because they needed those votes too), Hillary has no such restriction. She’s got open warfare in mind, and she’s already used to decades of right wing attacks that have been all sound and fury, but haven’t stopped her in the slightest.

When the best you can hope for is some mythical indictment on a crime that didn’t happen, that’s the state of the GOP (and the Bernie bros).

California is a big place, there are actually climates that don’t have high temperatures - San Diego’s average high temperature stays in the mid-70s. Same with Santa Barbara. If you don’t like the beach, there’s South Lake Tahoe with mountains and skiing and whatnot.

As for liberal politics, that’s the GOP’s fault for tying themselves to Prop 187 and running nobody credible (Arnold doesn’t count, he wouldn’t have survived a Republican primary and only won because the recall was nonpartisan). The CAGOP went Trump before it was cool, and they’ve been paying the price ever since.

Dark, WRT high temps in California, you gotta realize that CA goes from -282’ to 14,494’ in altitude, and covers the same latitude as the Eastern Seaboard from Connecticut to Georgia. So while there are places where it gets routinely into the triple digits, there are also places where it rarely goes over the mid 70s.

I plan to vote for Harris. Gonna leave work a little early to go vote, but will vote for her in both the primary and general. Sanchez is a twit.

Two questions to Charles Johnson directly.

1) Will this “pay screen” be there forever?

2) Will you finally keep your promise to open the site for multiple devices at once? It’s very annoying to post something on my computer while at the same time the site logs off on my tablet…

I’m obviously not Charles, but I’ve never had a problem with item #2. I’m logged in from my desktop and my phone right now.

It’s falsely attributed but isn’t Twain credited with saying that his coldest winter was summer in San Francisco. But yeah the geographical diversity of California is somethign to behold. It very much mirrors the nation as a whole in my observations.

I agree that after the convention would probably be better, but I’ll trust the judgment of HRC & POTUS about when they should really turn up the heat on Von ClownStick.

HRC has been politically active and battling the GOP for decades, and I think she learned a LOT when she ran for the ‘08 nomination and lost badly. She knows what she’s doing. As for POTUS, not only has he actually been president for 7.5 years, but he’s also the polar opposite of Von ClownStick—he almost never loses his cool and, man oh man, can he ever give a barn burner of a speech when he’s fired up. And if reports are to be believed, he’s chomping at the bit to get out there and start campaigning.

Von ClownStick is toast.

Conservatives love to say they’re for true equality- equality of opportunity but they ignore that not everyone starts at the same place. A mutual friend of my brother and mine was trying to claim that when ranting about “lazy” people. My brother to his credit politely told him that he was wrong. Our friend wasn’t a dick about it but I really don’t think he understands that the concept of equality of opportunity is a logical fallacy. I agree, it’s stupid to hate on California over politics. Not only that, Cali is a huge producer of many of the foods we eat every day (though many would have you believe all the food we depend on is grown in the heartland. Emphasis mine:

The C-Free Diet
If we didn’t have California, what would we eat?

Food scientists at Cornell University have produced a strain of broccoli that thrives in hot environments, which may make it possible for states with stiflingly hot summers to grow the vegetable. California, where cool coastal fog is perfect for growing standard broccoli, currently produces more than 90 percent of the broccoli grown in the United States. If California were to disappear, what would the American diet be like?

Expensive and grainy. California produces a sizable majority of many American fruits, vegetables, and nuts: 99 percent of artichokes, 99 percent of walnuts, 97 percent of kiwis, 97 percent of plums, 95 percent of celery, 95 percent of garlic, 89 percent of cauliflower, 71 percent of spinach, and 69 percent of carrots (and the list goes on and on). Some of this is due to climate and soil. No other state, or even a combination of states, can match California’s output per acre. Lemon yields in California, for example, are more than 50 percent higher than in Arizona. California spinach yield per acre is 60 percent higher than the national average. Without California, supply of all these products in the United States and abroad would dip, and in the first few years, a few might be nearly impossible to find. Orchard-based products in particular, such as nuts and some fruits, would take many years to spring back. […]

The loss of California’s output would create a dire situation for at least a decade. […]

slate.com

We should be thankful for California and its abundance, regardless of how we might feel about it’s politics or culture.

Back during the Power Crisis that took down Gray Davis, it was common to hear people say California should produce all its own power, instead of buying it from outside the state. Most of the people saying that, of course, have no clue where their own state got all its power from, and of course it ignores the fact that the rest of the country depends on California for a lot of things they don’t produce themselves.

So here’s the thing that’s funny to me about Superdelegatepalooza.

Yes, it is true that none of the superdelegates are bound to their choices until they actually vote next month. Yes, it is true that each and every one of them could change their minds.

But this introduces some interesting game theory shit. This is not a perfect-information setup — as far as they know, Clinton is winning most of the supers already, and if you, Bernie Sanders, call up a superdelegate right now and ask them to back you, you are asking them to back the loser. You can tell them that you’ve secreted away enough superdelegate votes to win in Cleveland, but you need to walk a very fine line if you do so, since if you’re winning anyway then why do they need to buy in? And they might just think you’re a liar. And even if you think you’ve got enough switchers to win, some of them might in turn be lying to you.

Nobody backs losers. It’s not fun, and you might also expect political retribution in the future. This is why, absent a Trumpian extinction-level-event for the party, superdelegates are never going to steal a primary.

(Go figure that Sanders fans completely fail to understand yet another aspect of group dynamics.)

Steinbaugh doesn’t think a crime was committed.

Trying to dig up death records about the parents of a sitting federal judge is creepy, and irrelevant to anything news-y, but that’s the Rage Furby for you. I’d have to look at the specific state laws on access to records to see whether there’s actually limitations on who can get the records or not (as if you must show familial connection to the deceased to get the record).

If he lied in order to get the records, and wouldn’t have been entitled to them otherwise, then he would have broken the law. If someone else lied to get the records, then the other person would have broken the law.

I know. I left out a word in my 264, and told people to reload it.

If you’re going to vote Trump because Bernie didn’t win then you never really were a progressive in the first place and I’d be saying the same if the roles were reversed. A vote for Trump is a vote against everything progressivism in this country is about- inclusion, respect for all, equality, etc.

According to IN statutes and regulations, you have to demonstrate a “direct interest” in the death certificate, as in be a family member, and you have to provide ID to view it or retrieve a copy. They can be requested online, but IIRC a hard copy is provided.

re: #274 Testy Toad T

The only way they’re plausibly going to influence the primary is if three (or more) plausible candidates reach the convention with none holding a majority of pledged delegates. Or if a Democratic Trump arises, and the Sandbaggers have shown us that the party is not immune to being overrun by hostile forces in open primaries and caucuses.

I could accept it all a litlte more if Bernie didn’t try to portray himself as being immune from typical politics while attacking Clinton as the consummate politician. Bernie’s a hack. I’m sorry but he really is. Loves to talk corporate responsibility but then goes silent when guns come up. Loves to talk about how we need a revolution in this country and gets angry when a reporter asks him why he hasn’t done anything for progressive candidates over the years. Clinton may be to Bernie’s center but she’s done more to get progressive candidates elected and stay in office than Bernie ever has.

They really do see Obama that way yet they have this delusion that tehy’re the base of Obama’s party, a party where Obama remains popular. They’re entitled to feel how they feel but I really resent them saying they’re the actual base of the Democratic party because they’re constantly looking for an excuse to leave it or shit on. They have no pride at all in the fact that Obama has done a lot of great things and been successful. They just seem to see the Democratic Party as the most left wing party that can actually win elections and think they can use it to their own ends. That’s not what being a party member is all about and you know what if they don’t have the stomach for that, that’s okay, you don’t have to be a Democrat but if you want to shape the Democratic PArty, yo should have a vested interest in staying a Democrat rather than constantly bitching about how you have to vote the lesser evil or how they don’t really represent you. The Clintons started as McGovern volunteers and worked within the party’s framework to where they are today. Who knows maybe 30 years from now, a Dem frontrunner will be a kid who started out in the Bernie campaign.

Thus I have a giant list of candidates in the primary for the coming Senate election in the fall.

Looking at the list I see that there are several running as Republican for the GOP nomination for Senate… and who should I see among that group?

None other than Ron Unz.

Because I thought there was no way Kerry would lose to Bush in 2004. The same is happening today in the Bernieverse. They’re convinced that Bernie should have won even though by all metrics he lost, and is definitely not the preferred candidate of Democrats. “Unlike Hillary Clinton, he’s not for amnesty, he’s not for abortion on demand, he doesn’t want to take away second amendment rights, he’s going to appoint conservatives to the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Hanaway.

(as a side note, it’s hilarious to me how sure Sanders supporters seem to be that everyone who backs Clinton now did so in 2008. So sure they don’t even feel the need to say it out loud, it’s taken as a foundational fact of the universe)

I still love Rubio wanting credit for “warning” us about Turmp but still supporting him. I always did dislike Rubio from the minute he ran quasi-homophobic ads attacking Crist for hugging Obama and it’s been downhill from there since he’s been a horrible Senator.

It was just a disagreement of where we wanted the party to go. Shit two of the oldest Democrats I knew (my grandparents) were Clinton backers. I preferred Obama because I thought he had the better message and I do admit I had Clinton fatigue too but the idea of her and her supporters not being real Democrats? Never crossed my mind. I realize now what I didn’t realize then is Hillary Rodham Clinton has built up a lot of good will in her party. Now that I think about it, I can remember my other grandmotehr being so happy to get a Christmas card from the WH. I doubt Bill and Hillary actually signed it personally but it meant a lot to her in her older years and she always told us about it. That woman was a proud Democrat from the minute she was able to vote for FDR and I do wish she had the chance to vote for Hillary. She was born into a world where women could not vote in this country. My grandfather thankfully treated her as an equal and I have no doubt that if she had lived in an era more egalitarian towards women, she would have done very well for herself.

You want to take money out of politics? Get off your ass and vote. If Democrats could be relied upon to show up at the polls, their candidates wouldn’t need to spend millions of dollars running for seats and trying to get moderates to vote. Samantha Bee did a bit about the 2010 elections when Democrats stayed home in some sort of national temper tantrum and ceded the country to the Republicans.

The worst thing you can say about the Democratic Part from 1980 until 2008 was that it was a party that had rested on their laurels for so long that it had to spend all its time defending the New Deal from being killed. We may finally be at the point where we can grow from the New Deal, but a big part of that is because the current iteration of Conservatism is finally failing.

Yeah you’re a coward Paul. Really fuck these guys. They’re worse than Trump himself as far as I’m concerned. Ryan and the GOP leadership want to be able to have it both ways. They want accolades for condemning Trump but they don’t want to actively run away from him because tehy know they’d lose their own power. The honorable and decent thing to do would be to resign and admit that the party has been hijacked by racist clowns and that they (the leadership) had a big part in that.

And on that you lost me. But then I could never live in California either.

Ah, Dark. I know how you feel. But you might be surprised. I grew up in Texas, with all kinds of ill conceived ideas about the Golden State. But, starting in my mid 20’s, business took me there through out my working life. I guess it was Santa Barbara that got to me first. There is absolutely something exotic about the air, and it seems to manifest in the people who live there. Later, I would find really down to earth, working stiffs just like myself, scattered around all the major population centers, from San Diego to Sacramento. Now granted, I ran across an a**hole or two. (although a pretty smart man told me one time, if the people you’ve met, that you absolutely can’t work with, is more than you can count on one hand, then the problem might not be them)

Hell, I even fell in love with a fog named Karl. I hope everyone gets the chance to walk in it on a fall evening, after a hearty bowl of cioppino with some fresh sourdough.

peace

They hate the Democratic Party but yet want to run it. Kind of like how conservatives view the government as far as I’m concerned. As I said earlier, Hillary and Bill Clinton got their start as supporters of McGovern. Bill got himself nominated for Congress. He lost but then ran for AG of Arkansas and won that and then became governor. I mean it’s like they have no concept of how people actually build a party. They say Bernie has started a movement and honestly a lot of what the movement stands for incldue things I support but it’s not a movement if you’re saying Bernie or bust. It’s not a movement if your candidate wouldn’t eevn commit to campaigning for other Democrats.

Been successfully dodging rain the last few days and getting in good sightseeing. Castle yesterday near Colmar.

Haut Koenigsburg

Ended yesterday in Verdun. Some more minor Verdun stuff today, but most of it was my brother tracing our grandfather’s World War 1 deployment in the Meuse-Argonne area. Located the 2-3 villages near where he “went over the top” and was wounded in October, 1918 and also the wood that the target of the assault. Also visited the main American memorial and cemetery in that area.

Meuse-Argonne Cemetery

Stopping for the night in Stemay on the Meuse River. Inn is an old mill by the river. Across the street from a beer museum.

We know who the true landlord of the inn is!

Most conservative states don’t like the “liberal politics” of states like CA, but they don’t mind living off of the extra taxes CA and other liberal states pay to the federal government.

Texas, my state, is the only conservative state not on the list of “receives more in taxes than they send” but that’s partially because it doesn’t bother taking care of its citizens.

HOWEVER, when a person fails to learn from their mistakes, is constantly making racist statements and has a long documented history of racist behavior like systematically avoiding renting to black people, then you no longer can reasonably extend them the benefit of the doubt. That is why it is fair to call Trump a racist.

My dad, who was white and loved watermelon, was bringing in the groceries and carrying two large watermelons. On the way in, he spotted a neighbor (who happened to be black). My dad, feeling a little goofy encumbered with those two enormous melons volunteered that the supermarket had a really great sale on watermelons. From then on, that neighbor gave my dad the cold shoulder and it took a while for my dad to realize what had caused the rift. He really wasn’t thinking of the stereotype——-he just figured everyone would want to know that there was a great price on some delicious food. He figured everyone loves watermelon.

I can totally see why our neighbor was troubled by my dad’s comment, but it was unfortunate that he jumped right from finding that statement offensive to thinking my dad was a racist. I think it’s important to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Florida AG asked Trump for donation before nixing fraud case

WASHINGTON (AP) — Florida’s attorney general personally solicited a political contribution from Donald Trump around the same time her office deliberated joining an investigation of alleged fraud at Trump University and its affiliates

The new disclosure from Attorney General Pam Bondi’s spokesman to The Associated Press on Monday provides additional details around the unusual circumstances of Trump’s $25,000 donation to Bondi.

The money came from a Trump family foundation in apparent violation of rules surrounding political activities by charities. A political group backing Bondi’s re-election, called And Justice for All, reported receiving the check Sept. 17, 2013 — four days after Bondi’s office publicly announced she was considering joining a New York state probe of Trump University’s activities, according to a 2013 report in the Orlando Sentinel.

After the check came in, Bondi’s office nixed suing Trump, citing insufficient grounds to proceed.

Same essential thing happened in Texas.

“Abbott’s probe was quietly dropped in 2010 when Trump University agreed to end its operations in Texas.”

“Trump subsequently donated $35,000 to Abbott’s successful gubernatorial campaign, according to records,” the AP reported.

This is all true but the nature of the political life is that the tolerance for misstatements is lower, because the only way of judging politicians is on how they behave in public - how they talk but most importantly how they vote.

This is why Ryan’s comment that he “doesn’t know what’s in Trump’s heart” is so stupid. I don’t know what’s in Ryan’s heart, Trump’s heart, Hillary’s heart or Bernie’s heart. But I know how they vote.

I don’t care what’s in Trump’s heart. What I care about is that he will vote like a racist.

It’d be interesting to see happen, but quite frankly, the party would never go for it (that’s what happened when McCain wanted to go with Lieberman, the party revolted). The VP is almost always the frontrunner for the next time around (although Cheney and Biden have changed that a bit). Not to mention the idea that if something happened to Clinton, it would mean the party giving up the office.

It’s quite common for the Army to contract with sheep and goat herders to keep their thousands of acres of earth-covered “igloo” ammunition storage trimmed. Lowers the risk from grass fires and eliminates the ignition source from mechanical mowers.

Yup! Which is a little disappointing, since we have several years now of a number of states being completely (R) - gov’s and leg’s. So we have plenty of evidence of what works and what doesn’t. Even if you really do view politics mostly as a team sport, R’s versus D’s, there has to some way to keep score. I think just looking at elections won is less important than looking at who more effectively provides for the common good of their constituents.
