Trump in Panic Mode, Tries to Deny He Ever Made Racist Comments About Judge

“Misconstrued”
Politics • Views: 49,707

A host of Republican politicians have denounced Donald Trump — their own nominee for president! — for his racist comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, and now he’s starting to panic, and trying to walk back those comments by saying they’ve been “misconstrued” in a statement clearly not written by Trump himself. (But notice there’s no apology here.)

Because he has thousands of Mexican and Hispanic friends. He even employs some of them, if you can believe that.

It is unfortunate that my comments have been misconstrued as a categorical attack against people of Mexican heritage. I am friends with and employ thousands of people of Mexican and Hispanic descent. The American justice system relies on fair and impartial judges. All judges should be held to that standard. I do not feel that one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial, but, based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case, I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial.

How could anyone interpret a call for a judge of Mexican heritage to recuse himself because he can’t possibly be impartial due to the fact that I want to wall off the southern border as a categorical attack on people of Mexican descent? It’s inconceivable!

I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial.

You felt justified in raising the question based on the fact that he must hate you after you spoke your hate for him, centered on his heritage, not his rulings in court. Loser.

I mean…all people of Mexican heritage think alike, amirite? He’s got to have a personal issue with me because all Mexicans think the same! It’s science! Get the phrenologist in here. Feel the bumps on Judge Curiel’s head. It’s classic Mexican pattern! And now he’s ruling against me. Do the math.

It’s not a walkback or tone down. It’s cognitive dissonance from statements he made previously. He’s acting as though he never impugned the judge, questioned his heritage, or anything else.

He’s a lying asshat.

Trump Says Judge’s Mexican Heritage Presents ‘Absolute Conflict’

In an interview, Mr. Trump said U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel had “an absolute conflict” in presiding over the litigation given that he was “of Mexican heritage” and a member of a Latino lawyers’ association. Mr. Trump said the background of the judge, who was born in Indiana to Mexican immigrants, was relevant because of his campaign stance against illegal immigration and his pledge to seal the southern U.S. border. “I’m building a wall. It’s an inherent conflict of interest,” Mr. Trump said.

As far as what Trump considers unfair rulings, I just skimmed through the Court’s ruling on his motion for summary judgment*. If anything I think the Court gave him a pass that he didn’t necessarily deserve.

Among the remedies sought was injunctive relief against Trump and Trump University that would prevent Trump University from operating in the future (because, of course, Trump has said that he plans to offer seminars again in the future). The Court found that the plaintiffs lacked Article III standing to pursue injunctive relief because they said in deposition they did not plan to purchase seminars in the future. There’s a split within the Circuit (and probably the District) as to whether potential future injury is needed to have standing on a claim like this. Personally, I think it’s slightly foolish in a case like this (I could understand the requirement if you’re talking about a product defect case), but there’s precedent to support the ruling.

The Court denied the motion on every thing else, which is why it goes to trial in November (unless there’s a settlement first).

*For the non-lawyer types, a motion for summary judgment (or in the alternative summary adjudication) is effectively a trial by motion. The moving party asks the court to find that there is no “triable issue of material fact”. When the defense does it, it means that the facts are such that no reasonable jury could find for the plaintiff on each and every element of a cause of action.

But let’s be honest, it’s not the racism in his remarks that the GOP is reacting to, it’s that he’s making it hard as fuck for them to carry water for him. They want this to be an election about the economy (which their base thinks is abysmal), healthcare (which their base thinks is 3rd world), foreign policy (which their base thinks means the world’s laughing at us while terrorist run amuck), and immigration (which their base thinks is all about keeping “Mexicans” out of America). In another time, they’d downplay Trump U as a “political hit-job” that’s not worth printing stories about, while the real story is “Emailgate” and the impending indictment of Hillary Clinton. This “outrage” isn’t over what Trump’s saying, it’s that he’s not following the script they set out.

Rounding up. OMG.

I need my fainting pearls to clutch. Where are they?

This is where King is going? Complaining that the AP is doing the same thing they’ve done in every other election cycle? Reporting delegate counts and primary results as they come in through ongoing reporting?

That’s the problem he has?

Or that Hillary had a file with a name he doesn’t like because it’s somehow a secret that Hillary’s ahead by 291 delegates excluding supers (~2x the margin of 2008), or more than 800 with them (and more than 5 times the difference between Hillary and Obama in 2008). This isn’t some close contest. It hasn’t been since before Super Tuesday, and there’s absolutely no reason to treat it as anything but a blowout win, which it has been.

There was no Bernie momentum. None. He didn’t have an advantage with open primaries or closed primaries. He didn’t really have an advantage with caucuses either.

And if you took away the supers, Bernie loses too. By any method of counting delegates he lost.

Only King thinks that there’s some fantasy math that cooks the books to result in Hillary stealing the election from his Chosen One.

Yeah, about that. The only ones trying to steal an election at this point are the desperate Bernie fans who think that the supers will override the popular vote, the pledged delegate advantages, and the current superdelegate advantage for Hillary to go with Bernie.

Not happening. Not now. Not ever.

One of the Dem super-pacs is starting to run anti-trump ads:

Grace

With the Democratic primary almost finished, pro-Hillary Clinton super-PAC Priorities USA released its first ad, set to start airing Wednesday in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, and New Hampshire. Featuring an Ohio couple discussing their daughter with spina bifida, the ad highlights the time Donald Trump mocked New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski for having a disability after the journalist debunked Trump’s claim of seeing Muslims in New Jersey celebrating on 9/11.

That’s going to leave a mark. And I still say that Trump tries to get out before becoming the nominee.

One thing that annoys me is this whole ‘Winning California!’ thing. Delegates are awarded proportional to the vote, so if it’s 50.5 to 49.5, they get pretty much the same number of delegates. But Sanders is banking on some kind of psychological boost from getting slightly more votes in one state.

The Hill: 30 Ways in Which Trump is committing Political Suicide

24. On last Friday, June 2, the new Reuters-Ipsos poll of likely general election voters showed a surprising result: likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton at 46.5 percent and Trump at 35 percent. If this is not an outlier — if, indeed, Trump is in decline due to his recent behavior — then things between now and Cleveland in July are going to become dicey for The Donald.

25. You will start to read leaks of Republicans musing that “we are committing political suicide if we keep going down this road.”

26. Many of the delegates that are legally “pledged” to Trump are in fact not Trump acolytes — they are party people.

27. It is entirely possible that they will begin to explore ways to get out of their obligation to vote on the first and/or second ballot for Trump.

28. All this is predicated on Trump continuing the downward spiral he’s put himself in.

29. It is also possible that he will figure out that things are not working, and will self-correct; if so, he will indeed be officially nominated on July 21.

30. With six weeks to go until the GOP convention in Cleveland, it is up to Donald Trump: He must either pull himself together and lead the Republican Party in a responsible manner, or else be prepared to have a major mutiny on his hands.

Letr’s see how long he can keep his piehole closed on the Trump U lawsuit with the media jackals constantly needling him….

I think that’s why he’s contested states that have been close. It doesn’t matter that he’ll net one or two delegates, he’s able to tell his supporters he won such and such state. I am amused how New Jersey has completely been forgotten. Even if these SDs hadn’t put Clinton over the top, she was going to clinch tonight in NJ since Bernie’s completely ignored it.

Sure. It’s all a bunch of insincere bullshit at this point, since the GOP has had plenty of time to rebuke Trump and push back against his stupidity, and they failed. Thing is, none of them want to have to answer for Trump for the next five months, so they’re scrambling for cover.

NYMag: The Good News Is That Donald Trump’s Campaign Is an Absolute Strategic and Managerial Garbage Fire

To the extent that running a competent campaign matters, it will hurt Trump very badly. Yes, he won the Republican primary by relying on a massive imbalance of media coverage and exploiting a divided, extremely large field that failed to coalesce against him. Yes, he tapped into deep strains of anger in the conservative base that fellow Republicans ignored. But he’s not a political savant, and he hasn’t abolished the rules of politics. He’s a reality-television performer who tapped into a deep vein of cultural resentment that appeals to a decided minority of the electorate. Fortunately, many of the same qualities that would make Trump epically dangerous in the presidency — his impulsive ignorance, blustering arrogance, and contempt for data — also make him unlikely to obtain it.

All judges should be held to that standard. I do not feel that one’s heritage makes them incapable of being impartial, but, based on the rulings that I have received in the Trump University civil case, I feel justified in questioning whether I am receiving a fair trial.

I suspect that Trump was trying to distract people from paying attention to all the damning information coming out about the Trump University scam by shifting the focus of attention to questions of racism. (I also suspect he was taken aback that he has gotten so much push-back.) Trump voters are largely racist too and unlikely to stop supporting him “just because he said something politically incorrect”. Furthermore, accusing the judge of bias is another way of diminishing the impact of the Trump U story. And I think he really needs to do that.

Trump U attendees have a lot in common with Trump voters. They are gullible people facing economic difficulties who want to believe that Trump has the answers that will make them better off because he is soooo rich. If his voters see Trump as ripping off people who are just like them, the scales may fall from their eyes. It is one thing for him to negotiate aggressively with people in his own league, but ripping off veterans, retirees, widows and other desperate people———that could really hurt him if it sinks in.

Trump’s racism should be disqualifying but it may not hurt him as much with his voters as the gory details of his scam school and his bribes to the AGs. We need to pay attention to that and keep the story alive. So everyone, keep reading (and clicking) on all the articles detailing his scam———the reporters need our encouragement.

Christ, I remember when everyone was so ‘concerned’ about Hillary as FLOTUS, because she’d had a pretty big career as a partner in a big private law firm, and would that clash with her duties as tea-server-in-chief in the White House.

I also remember when the Right tried to paint her as Lady MacBeth, the REAL power behind Bill, who was merely her puppet.

Then she won election to the Senate - TWICE. And on the strength of that and the rest of her career, was nominated and overwhelmingly confimed as Secretary of State, where she served honorably for 4 years.

But yeah, she hasn’t accomplished anything.

re: #136 ObserverArt

I agree that it’s 100% pack behavior. It’s not as if Trump first began attacking Judge Curie yesterday, and those who are denouncing him today know it, but their cowardice prevented them from opening their mouths weeks ago. Once one GOP/TPer denounced Trump, the rest decided they’d get on the bandwagon. This is all about party over country. If it weren’t, some high ranking GOP/TPer would have denounced Trump the first time he attacked Judge Curiel. McConnell said in a presser today that Trump needs to “get on message,” and based on what I’ve witnessed in the past, I’m going to assume this means he needs to stick to RW talking points. The fact that Trump felt the need to issue a lie-filled statement in regard to his attacks on Judge Curiel indicates to me that maybe he’s going to try using GOP/TP talking points. I think that will last until the next journalist asks him about the Trump U. lawsuit. In response to the question, I can hear him in my mind screaming, “Didn’t I say I wouldn’t discuss that matter anymore?” He will then probably proceed to attack the MSM and insult the journalist who asked the question because I don’t think the guy can control his temper and has a habit of lashing out verbally at those who cross or displease him. I also think it’s a learned habit/response.

No, this is how a narcissist “apologizes.”

A sociopath has no problem giving you a heartfelt apology and taking blame. He’s just lying while he does it.

A narcissist can never bring himself to take blame. Nothing’s ever his fault.

This is how it always is with the demagoguery of the current “right wing.”

Nothing happens unless they say it happened. Proof—video, audio, documents—have no validity. The only way anything is true is if they call it true, in the moment. If they then need an opposite position to be true at a later moment, it will also be true.

It’s creepily like the Soviets and Maoists…because its not a simple function of ideology or “wing,” it’s a product of how one elects (or have been conditioned) to interact with validity.

CHICAGO (WLS) — A registered sex offender is accused of trying to videotape a child in the bathroom at Wrigley Field.

Police said Nichols Gregor, 37, was attempting to secretly videotape an 11-year-old boy in the washroom at Wrigley Field on Saturday. The boy’s father contacted security and they called police.

Gregor is charged with three felony counts for illegal videotaping, all of which are sex crimes.

Well, they’re not going to admit that “normal”-looking dudes do this stuff, and they can’t conceive of women doing it and/or it’s awesome if she’s hot. They definitely aren’t going to admit that their kid is likely to be sexually exploited by a relative, friend of the family, or person with access and authority or the child…because that would call into question their premises about the infallibility of family, father knows best, and wholesome “community.”

Therefore, there has to be One True Perversion: the transexual gay kinky Democrat who’s going to be a threat to your kids in the bathroom.

The latter makes them feel better, so that’s what they go with.

The best part is that not only could the Trump U scandal tank his campaign, but think how much it would diminish his “brand”! Heh

“It’s fraud. … straight-up fraud,” the state’s Democratic Attorney General Eric Schneiderman reiterated during an MSNBC interview last week after a judge unsealed court documents from one of the Trump U. lawsuits and allowed for a more detailed look into the allegations of deceit.

The strange part? Some key conservative voices agree with the Democrat’s legal assessment. That’s why back in February, a National Review writer denounced the Trump seminars as “a massive scam.” And last month, The Weekly Standard warned that Trump U. represented a “political time bomb” that could doom the candidate’s November chances: “Democrats will see to that.” (Both magazines have opposed Trump for months and have pointed to Trump U. as a reason for their opposition.)

I’ve been following the Stanford rape case as little as I could, knowing it would only depress me and piss me off. Then I was talking to my group, which is comprised largely of women, about voting, and Trump (it’s also comprised largely of nonwhites), and one said she was more upset by the Stanford thing, so I finally broke down and read as much as I could take of the victim’s statement, and as much as I could stand of the perp’s father’s statement.

I was right. Angry and depressed. Especially now when I see his picture, because he’s such a good looking kid, and comes from the right background, and all that shit that got him his slap on the wrist, and you just know if he were anything but a blue eyed blond, it would have been very, very different.

Luckily, he’ll be out of the Governor’s office since there are term limits and he’s on his second term (he could run again, but he’s have to sit out at least one term first). He’s not fooling much of anyone here in Jersey. From yesterday:

Christie’s approval rating hits record low in another poll

Gov. Christie’s job rating has hit a record low in another poll, with 26 percent of registered New Jersey voters approving and 65 percent disapproving.

The poll released Monday by Monmouth University also found most New Jerseyans — 68 percent — think the Republican governor endorsed Donald Trump for president to get a job in the billionaire businessman’s administration. […]

The poll is the latest to find Christie’s approval rating drop to a new low. A Fairleigh Dickinson University poll two weeks ago found Christie’s approval at 26 percent with registered voters, while a Quinnipiac University poll, also last month, found it at 29 percent. […]

Among New Jersey adults — not just registered voters — Christie’s rating in the Monmouth poll released Monday was 27 percent approval, 63 percent disapproval.

More New Jerseyans than ever questioned Christie’s commitment to his day job, the poll found, with 79 percent saying Christie was more concerned with his political future than with governing the state. […]

Sure, “his life is ruined”. Who ruined it? The victim? Nope. The Jury? Nope. The System? Nope.

It was him. All him.

I’ve brought up before on LGF that I sat on the jury for a rape case a few years ago, and the case eventually ended up being a “he said, she said” that ended up erring on the side of caution and letting the guy walk. When the verdict had finally been read and we retired to the jury room before leaving for the last time, the judge came back and thanked us for our service and offered to answer any questions he could. I don’t remember whether it was me or another juror, but the question came up (as it had during deliberations) what the penalty would be if the defendant had been convicted. The judge informed us that the state of Virginia has a mandatory 5 year prison term for rape, as well as ending up on the sex offender registry. So to see this shitheel get off for a far worse offense than the one I sat in judgment of with a six month jail term roils my stomach something fierce.

Puerto Rico still hasn’t counted 20 percent of its votes. The percentages and delegates (61-39% and 36-24 delegates) haven’t moved since late Sunday.

Washington state is counting its last ballots this afternoon to certify its primary, which is meaningless except possibly to tell us what to expect from California. Hillary won by 7 points among Election Night ballots (82% of the total) and Sanders won by 7 among the late-arriving ballot (18%), giving a 5-point margin for Hillary overall.

US “progressives” aren’t different from US wingnuts in that they assume the centrality of their problems, inside their country, relative to the rest of the world. You know, I am now thinking it best to encourage all of these established Republicans to go after Trump. Go for it GOP…slam the man, dump the Trump.

Here’s the thing.

Trump started his campaign the very first day talking crap about Mexicans and building a wall. That got him his support and he rode that all the way to the nomination.

To those base supporters it was this very attitude that they loved. Does anyone think this thing with the judge is seen any differently by that base? I don’t.

And what word have we heard all along in this primary season: Establishment.

The GOP established candidates got thumped. The signal sent by the base: we don’t want the established GOPers.

And now those same established members of the Republican party are most likely being seen by Trumps supporters as trying to bring their boy down.

So why do I think this is great. Establishment GOP members will be seen as the enemy by their very own party members and they are not going to forget this. Any established candidate, like a Mark Kirk, is going to be trying to get these pissed off people to vote for them at the same time they try to mess with Trump.

Simply…that is not going to work. They are going to vote for Trump and either not vote for the established members like Kirk, or they are going to vote for Hillary or some other party’s candidate.

And this will also effect the next mid-term elections too in two years, especially if Trump gets pounded by Clinton. They will have seen the establishment as the enemy that got Trumped defeated and they are not going to forget it. These people do not forget.

This same issue could also effect state and local races depending on the position those Republican take at this time.

Many have said the Democrats are probably upset they let Bernie in as an independent. That is mild compared to the issues the GOP faces. Anyone think the GOP is happy now they let Trump in to run?

And just a few weeks ago…the same establishment GOP were patting themselves on the back they ended up their primary early and saw clear sailing ahead for the RNC convention in Cleveland. They saw all the issues Democrats were still having and they laughed with glee.

My how wrong they were. And their letting Trump in and not being able to get him out is going to cost them big time. And it will ding them for years.

Democrats…it is time for a new chairman, a new thinking and get the bailing machines ready. Time to make hay!

In the same vein, while US progressive can fall into the assumption that “leftist”/”socialist institutions elsewhere can’t fail (or not be leftist), I find Americans who are critically of Stalin and the USSR are often doing so from a very limited palette in which godless socialism lead to mass murder.

Basically, lots of folks are not OK with nuance, historical detail, or the idea of culture as a larger mechanism in how people behave. The choose simple narratives that mirror their own heuristics.

Which is why we’re probably all doomed.

I’d really love to sit in with the people in the Hillary campaign that are planning all the attack adverts they’re going to run in the next 6 weeks before the Republican nomination, and then after that till the election.

They probably need to have some dark rooms for those staff to lie down in after laughing so hard.

About the only difficult choice they have is to which topic to hit Trump on - it is the very definition of a ‘target rich’ environment.

Strafe first, then lay down heavy fire on the topics that put up the most flack.

I don’t know the rest of the world as well as the US, but I suspect this is a problem everywhere, all the time, for everyone. Even me, who’s actively engaged with the idea. Humans like heuristics, we don’t like cognitive dissonance or the sustained tension of not knowing.

It’s just really visible right now in the US because we’re so highly connected individual-to-individual-to-public; we have the most resources with which to play out our bad assumptions; and we’re the remaining superpower so everybody is glued to monitoring even the smallest of our vital signs.

It did happen a couple months ago at one of his rallies. There was a protester wearing a white hood and another guy carry some sign and as they were being led up the stairs by law enforcement a guy jumped out and punched the guy in front of the hooded one and when he fell down, the dude also started to kick at the protester. He then turned right around and let the cops arrest him. It was an African-American guy that attacked.

“There’s a disgusting guy, puts a Ku Klux Klan hat on,” Trump said as the man was being escorted out — referring to the protester’s friend, as The Post’s Jose A. DelReal reported. “He thinks he’s cute — he’s a disgusting guy.” Trump added: “They’re taking away our First Amendment rights. They’re troublemakers. They’re no good, and we better be careful. We’ve got to take our country back, folks.”

So, now Hillary can’t be compassionate for those less fortunate because she wore a $12k Armani jacket at an inequality speech 2 months ago. Weeeeee.

Back in the day, George Wallace got tagged by an opponent for wearing a superexpensive suit. Wallace didn’t dodge. His next speech, the first thing he said was, “Yes, I’m in a suit that cost a lot of money. When I come out to see you, I wear my very best.”

The audience loved it. I hated the man but had to admire the political counterpunch.

The Boycott Israel “movement,” which is advocated primarily by anti-Israeli Arab groups, antisemites and their “useful idiots.” Their message is all about being against Israel, no matter what it does, no matter when. Their primary efforts consist of threatening businesses and performing artists from coming to the country or cooperating with the Israeli government, academia or even just the ordinary people, regardless of anything.

In 1979 I went to a wine tasting with friends and splurged dearly on a case of Spatlese - the most exquisite wine ever to pass my lips. I stashed the case of precious liquid, unopened, to save for only the most special occasions. Turned out one came along soon after when I was offered a (to me a dream) position no woman had ever been offered before. It came with the admonition from my boss “Do not screw this up. My ass is on the line.”

One more little crack in the ceiling.

As soon as I got home, I cracked open that case of wine in celebration. Slurped an entire bottle, I did, relishing every sip of the wine and my accomplishment. Both were delicious.

Just opened a lovely bottle of Spatlese (not that same case - it didn’t make it to 1980) to celebrate tonight. Seemed like the perfect choice to raise my glass to Secretary Clinton and every woman who has pounded on that ceiling for generations so we could see this day. So. Fucking. Cool.

They won’t because as long as they can get attention and make a few bucks by stirring sh*t up, they’ll keep doing what they’re doing. I’m not saying they don’t have the right to say the things they say, but I am saying that they should pay attention and notice when it’s time to drop/change the subject. They seem to think that if they keep beating a dead horse, people will suddenly see they’re right. What this kind of behavior actually does is piss off others and make them stop listening to anything you have to say. Shaun King and Michael Moore know Sen. Sanders’ presidential campaign is over, but neither can stop throwing sh*t against the wall and hoping some of it sticks.

Don’t count on it. They are insufferable in that respect. Delegate math is absolutely beyond them. That even if you back out all the superdelegates, Hillary easily crosses the majority of pledged delegates, and Bernie never had a chance since he would have required such a high percentage of remaining pledged delegates that it has been impossible for weeks.

Fact is that this primary season is nothing like 2008.

2008 - less than 200k votes and less than 150 delegates separated Clinton from Obama, including supers.

2016 - more than 3 million votes, and 291 delegates separates Clinton from Sanders, not counting the supers. With the supers, it’s 800 delegates.

Not. A. Contest.

Chris Matthews giving Hillary advice on how she needs to act about Trump and, amazingly, the loathsome Nicolle Wallace actually making the most sense, saying that it doesn’t matter what the Republican establishment does now—Trump’s their candidate.

Rachel started a “what if he does something even worse” line of BS and Nicolle said, “What could he do that would be worse than insulting a Federal judge? It’s over—he’s the nominee.”

I don’t think I realized how much it would mean to me until this race. It makes me understand that I didn’t really realize how much Obama meant to African-Americans, for example - I thought I knew, but I didn’t really. I couldn’t, because I don’t know what it’s like to deal with the racism on a regular basis.

Or that closed primaries are somehow voter suppression. That one ticks me off since that diminishes what real voter suppression looks like. Words have meanings, and voter suppression isn’t what happens when a political party decides the rules for joining that party’s system of choosing its representatives for office.

When a state shutters dozens of polling places causing massive lines = voter suppression
When a state has different open/close times depending on region = voter suppression

See the difference? Yeah, the Bernie bros don’t.

There’s going to be millions more in NJ and CA tonight.

Enthusiasm gap perhaps? Or maybe the Voter ID laws are coming home to roost. Or that we’re comparing the 2008 at its conclusion and all states and DC/territories voted compared to pre CA, NJ, and the other 4 states voting today (MT, ND, NM, SD), plus DC next week.

I don’t think I realized how much it would mean to me until this race. It makes me understand that I didn’t really realize how much Obama meant to African-Americans, for example - I thought I knew, but I didn’t really. I couldn’t, because I don’t know what it’s like to deal with the racism on a regular basis.

But sexism? Yeah, I’ve dealt with that. And to see a woman finally smashing through that ceiling …damn, it feels fucking amazing.

I’m right there with you, Garlic Grrll! And, not to “oldsplain” but, as a woman who was in her 20s when birth control was first available for unmarried women, and before Roe passed, and who entered the workforce at a time when “oh, don’t be upset if he pats your ass during a meeting—it’s just the way things are” was mainstream, it truly is a day I never thought I’d see.

Yeah, right. Trump was “calling attention to racism” by saying Judge Curiel should recuse himself because he’s of “Mexican heritage.” I’m glad others on CNN are tearing Jeffrey Lord a new *sshole. Maybe if he uses the new one to talk in the future, we’ll hear something that is truthful and makes sense. I must admit that I was late joining the Obama Coalition. At the time, I was still teaching and not paying much attention to the Democratic Primary. When it was announced on November 4, 2008 that Barack Obama had won, I thought I might have been living in The Twilight Zone. I’d lived under Jim Crow in the south and through the Civil Rights Era, but I had never thought America would elect a black candidate to the presidency. Obama winning caught me by surprise. What disgusted me shortly thereafter were those who began making the claim that his election meant that the U.S. was entering a “post-racial period.” I knew this was a lie, and those who embraced the belief irritated me to no end because they just didn’t/don’t understand that racism is an ingrained feature in America and is not a bug.

We’re also watching an entire political party that is actively resisting all change and refuses to address that equal rights and protection applies to everyone all the way up to the White House. The GOP stands for the angry white men who think that they’re losing rights, when all they’re seeing is everyone finally beginning to catch up to what they’ve had all along.
