Hillary Clinton’s Historic Achievement

Sanders barely acknowledges
Politics • Views: 49,089

Decisive primary victories for Hillary Clinton give her a strong position going into the general election, and a historic achievement as the first female nominee of a major party, but Bernie Sanders is still insisting he’ll continue his campaign, for reasons known only to him. And his speech last night in California was remarkable for its lack of graciousness toward Clinton.

Hillary Clinton claimed the Democratic presidential nomination on Tuesday night after decisive victories in the California, New Jersey and New Mexico primaries, and she quickly appealed to supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont to unite with her against Donald J. Trump.

The Associated Press reported early Wednesday that Mrs. Clinton had won California, but Mr. Sanders gave no indication that he would yield, insisting earlier that he would continue his campaign and barely acknowledging her achievement.

From the previous thread:

From a comment at Daily Kos:

Primary popular vote update, now including every primary and caucus except DC:
•Hillary Clinton: 16,466,548
•Bernie Sanders: 12,728,577
•Donnie Trump: 13,483,945
•Cruz: 7,738,167
•Kasich: 4,229,587
•Rubio: 3,526,758

Two quick notes: 1) California is still counting votes, and when all is said and done (next week?) Hillary’s lead will likely be even greater.

2) The old GOP talking point about “more enthusiasm” on their side has definitively bit the dust. As of this morning there have been 29.2 million votes cast for the Democratic candidates compared to 28.9 million votes for the larger GOP field.

Think this has something to do with why Bernie’s not giving up the ghost. He’s in fantasy world, believing that he’s an indictment away from the nomination.

re: #5 lawhawk

Josh Marshall called that weeks ago.

talkingpointsmemo.com

For months I’d thought and written that Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver was the key driver of toxicity in the the Democratic primary race. Weaver has been highly visible on television, far more than campaign managers tend to be. He’s also been the one constantly upping the tension, pressing the acrimony and unrealism of the campaign as Sanders actual chances of winning dwindled.

But now I realize I had that wrong.

Actually, I didn’t realize it. People who know told me.

Over the last several weeks I’ve had a series of conversations with multiple highly knowledgable, highly placed people. Perhaps it’s coming from Weaver too. The two guys have been together for decades. But the ‘burn it down’ attitude, the upping the ante, everything we saw in that statement released today by the campaign seems to be coming from Sanders himself. Right from the top.

I’ve been musing at the same thing too. Ever since Super Tuesday back in March, when Hillary jumped out to a commanding lead, Bernie hasn’t been within sniffing distance.

darthstar  Jun 8, 2016 • 6:46:28am

This is a historic moment, and it should be celebrated. I think it’s every bit as important as 2008 was, and I hope people focus on that aspect, as that will be what brings people together.

Sanders going to meet with Obama and Reid this week…if he’s looking for a graceful exit, it wouldn’t hurt to let him have one.

Because I’m a major optimist, I’m going to give Sanders the benefit of the doubt and say that he’s 1) trying to make a final push for his goals and 2) trying to figure out how he’s going to redirect the energy of his campaign. Because (and against my need for sleep) I stayed up and watched his speech late last night and Sanders did nothing to indicate that he knows how to stop his train and keep it from doing damage.

The slight cynic in me is that Sanders is still trying to figure out how to make sure he’s a component of the Clinton campaign, and how to keep from being marginalized over the next few years.

This complaint about superdelegates that came from the Sanders camp I have not heard any Democrat (all handful of us) espouse here in my county.

Our county party is interested in the superdelegates as they are intended: to vote as long-time members of the party who have worked to assemble and build it. Even though we went for Sanders, we don’t want our state superdelegates overthrowing the will of the voters in the primaries.

(Strange how as the only elected Democrat in my county I was not selected to be a delegate to the state party convention. Guess they think my hair is too long or they don’t like my trilby hats.)

When asked what Turner would want from the party if Sanders does drop out, she highlighted the $15 minimum wage as well as a push for universal healthcare along the lines of Sanders’z single-payer program.

Sanders bears some responsibility for this with his over the top rhetoric against the media, the DNC, the Democratic Party, Hillary, mathematics, and reality. If anyone from the Sanders camp actually read the AP story, they would have realized the AP was well justified in making their call. The AP has been continuously surveying super-delegates over time and found that they were not going to switch for Sanders. There isn’t a single metric that favors Sanders. It’s over.

There actually was an accomplishment; Bernie showed America that there are a whole shit-ton of people who want what he was selling. Myself included. Where the problem comes in is that he offered no path to achievement. Other than 1) We want it, 2) you tell people you want it, and 3) MAGIC! We get it! Had he had a path to that accomplishment, I would have been on the Bernie train.

We couldn’t get universal healthcare during the Obamacare debate because of Joe Lieberman…how are we going to get it now? 1, 2, 3 above? Yeah, that’s reality.

How do we even fix Obamacare in the current climate? No one in the GOP wants to fix the known problems let alone go down the Universal path. What fucking planet are these people on?

I am a realist and had Bernie given me any kind of realistic path to get to where he (and I!) wanted to go, I’d have gone for him 1000%.

Sorry, Nina…wanting it and making it happen are distinctly different things.

Ever since network news ceased being a public service and became a way to make money through adverts, the only way to cover a political campaign is by selling a horserace narrative, even if the horse being sold is old and toothless and ready for the glue factory.

The networks are going to sell a horserace right up until election day.

I really thought the difference in diehards for both campaigns was shown when Sanders was mentioned by Clinton and when Clinton came up with Sanders. Cheers for Bernie from the Clinton crowd and boos from the Sanders. I’ve seen a lot of Berners insist that Clinton and her supporters are vindictive but I think they have some of that right wing style projection going because I thought Hillary was very gracious to Bernie in her speech last night. She may not want him as VP or in the cabinet but you know what, losing a primary to someone doesn’t mean they give you a job in their administration and I’ll be frank, Bernie’s not cut out to be an administrator.

The demographic and geographical advantages at this point means that Hillary has to concentrate in fewer states to get to 270 than Trump does to get there. Trump’s on the defensive to the point where certain states that are ordinarily locks for the GOP are looking iffy.

It’s up to the Clinton campaign to not only press this advantage, but to make sure that GOTV helps the down ticket races. That’s going to be key.

As they say, power corrupts.

The Democrats have a big advantage from the start being centered in more populated states for the EC. Let me put it this way. When Bush beat Gore (I’m not going to get into the FLA fiasco) and Kerry, he was winning by a single state. The Republicans do NOT have a rational candidate nor one that has some appeal to a diverse electorate. In fact, I don’t think it’s crazy at all for me to think that Clinton would equal or maybe even top Obama’s 2008 map but we’re a long way aways.

Senator Sanders is somewhat like Senator Warren in one respect: Their positions in the Senate give much more support for a progressive agenda than any cabinet post or a VP slot.

Hillary Clinton lost fair and square to then Senator Obama in 2008. Obama was under no obligation to give Mrs. Clinton the time of day just because she came in second. President Obama realised Hillary Clinton’s unique ability to be Secretary of State, and thus appointed her to the position. She served admirably in that position.

I could see Senator Sanders appointed to a position such as Secretary of Labor. It would suit his narrative well, and I suspect he wouldn’t turn it down if offered (in the same way Mrs. Clinton did not turn down Secretary of State).

Most other polling estimators are far less kind to Trumps chances, showing a close race in Arizona and Utah(!) too. Though, in Utah’s case a third party is competing alongside the other 2.

If the Libertarians could take Utah, it would be the 1st time since 1968 that a 3rd Party has gotten a vote at the Electoral College.

Yeah that’s why I’ve never been on the Warren for VP bandwagon. I want Elizabeth Warren to be a warrior for progressive causes in the Senate. I wouldn’t be opposed to Secretary of Labor FWIW but I don’t think she’s under any obligation to offer him a cabinet post either. Now if she wants to, that’s fine too just as I was fine with Obama giving her SoS and Iit was giving her her that post that actually helped to change my mind about her.

My state (Nebr.) gave one electoral vote to President Obama in 2012. Considering who the GOP is running, I can see Mrs. Clinton winning another House district (thus giving her four electoral votes, according to our state system).

That would be Clinton 4 and Trump 1. (My district is almost guaranteed to go for Trump.) That would be quite a smack across the face of the GOP if Nebraska went 4-1 for Mrs. Clinton, and I will do everything I can to ensure that (though I live in NE-3 where Mrs. Clinton will probably get about seventeen votes).

I wanna see my state go Blue.

You noticed that too huh. Honestly, the crying about voter suppression makes me downright ill when Clinton is winning with support from people who the Republicans actually have attempted to suppress at the polls. It’s simple math. Clinton has a much more diverse support base than Bernie does. I just love how closed primaries are awful but caucuses are okay with them. Shit even my brother who supported Bernie thinks caucuses are crappy.

It was so exciting for me here in Va when it went for Obama. Our state hadn’t gone Democratic since LBJ and then four years later, he did it again. And I have no doubt that Hillary will continue that streak.Virginia is slowly becoming a presidential blue state as we have become among the more educated and culturally diverse states.

re: #89 Dr. Matt

Amazing. Every time Bernie loses, it’s because of robbery, rigged election, and voter suppression. What coincidence.

And the rigging/voter suppression somehow affects only Bernie voters.

Let’s look at what happened in NY or CA. Both states had longstanding rules, and applied them - it affected both HRC and BS. Yet BS claimed voter suppression affected him, but not HRC. That included clearing voter rolls of people who hadn’t voted in two prior federal elections per state law (but done improperly because a step checking it by the local BOE was missed). Brooklyn’s demographics favored HRC, but Bernie somehow thought that all the votes there that went uncounted were his. Rinse and repeat.

Heck, there was actual voter suppression in AZ, and both HRC and BS sued.

These people are distorting the usage of “voter suppression” out of all actual meaning of the term. They ignore what it really is - Jim Crow wasn’t all that long ago, but people ignore that. Voter ID is current GOP attempts at voter suppression. Different times for opening and closing polls depending on where you are in state is voter suppression. Those need to be addressed. Closed primaries isn’t voter suppression.

Caucuses aren’t voter suppression either, but they are anti-democratic since it results in fewer people participating in the process due to how they operate.

Well, I suppose that would depend on whether Senator Sanders could compromise or not. Secretary of Labor is not exactly a position where compromise is required. It enforces the Executive on labour law.

Even if Senator Sanders is offered nothing, he goes back to the Senate as a progressive voice likely to support Democratic positions as he always has, and take up his mantle as the Amendment King. (Of note, offering amendments to bills is one method of compromise.)

And further complicating Trump’s task at this point is his harebrained idea to try to won both California and New York in the general. Political reality says that he might as well haul a bag of money out into the yard at Mar-a-Lago and set it on fire for all the good it will do him.

But, hey - Trump’s set that as a goal, and he’s likely to overrule his advisors (who are probably telling him that he’s out of his mind to try and win two heavily Democratic states) in order to prove he’s a ‘winner.’ To which I say, go ahead and burn that money, Donnie. I won’t claim to be an expert about labor relations or the department of labor but I think that position is probably best for someone not with a reputation for being combative to those who disagree with them. As Secretary of Labor, Bernie would be dealing with labor leaders, business leaders, and others. I”ve talked about my grandfather before, he was a labor arbitrator for many years. Part of how how he managed to do his job successfully for so long is that he was by nature a calm and collective man who was willing to listen to everyone. I don’t think the trait is something Bernie has honestly.

They don’t live here.

Perhaps I am overly-optimistic (just as my wife is equally pessimistic about a Trump landslide and massive voter fraud in favour of the GOP nationwide), but I think the Electoral districts that represent Omaha and Lincoln (NE-1 and NE-2) are going to break for Mrs. Clinton.

If that happens, she would overwhelm the voters in NE-3 (everything that is rural). Taking two electoral districts means under state law she gets the state’s electors as well.

I can dream of a Blue Nebraska. It was once a progressive state, it can be again. (Plus, we have the lesson of Kansas and its tyre fire to our south.) Nebraskans like things like well-funded public schools and such.

I’m really impressed with how Clinton managed the Primary campaign. She didn’t let Bernie’s various big days or weeks rattle her. She kept her campaign positive WRT him, contrasting, rather than attacking. She never, even when Sanders went off on her based on a lie and called her ‘unqualified’, she never counterpunched. She’s been gracious in victory, and has been leaving him space to exit gracefully.

And the result is that she hasn’t spent all her money, and she hasn’t burned any bridges, so NOW she can turn the big guns on Trump, having committed no unforgivable sin against Sanders’ supporters.

Contrast that with Trump, whose approach was to ruthlessly belittle and demean his opponents till they had to drop out, then he’d halfheartedly congratulate them, and let them kiss his ass. And spent all his money a month and a half before the convention.

I am a tail-end Baby Boomer.

The idea that Mrs. Clinton is somehow “corrupt” or whatnot doesn’t even make any sense to me. (I had the pleasure growing up of Richard Nixon opening up the Cambodia Campaign in the Vietnam War resulting in my father’s death.)

The idea that Mrs. Clinton is some sort of warmonger because she voted for the Iraq War (which, by the way, though Mr. Sanders voted against it, voted in favour of its continued funding) is ludicrous. She was privy to exactly the same information the Bush 43 administration put out as every other senator. It is tough to make a proper vote based on an administration’s information that was deliberately false.

I think Senator Sanders has done good in the primary, both by bringing attention to the Democrats and by highlighting issues that might have gone unnoticed. I want Senator Sanders to work on those issues, not burn the house down.

We’ll see what happens in the next few days. I suspect he will stay through the DC primary to keep his campaign promise to allow all the voters to weigh in. I truly hope when the primary is over he chooses to support Mrs. Clinton (or at least not oppose her).

It is right and proper he should take his delegates to the convention, he earned them. But when those delegates lose the vote in the first round, I want Mr. Sanders to unite behind the candidate that will be standing against the orange fascist talking yam and the party that is propping that guy up.

I want Sanders to join the trail with President Obama and other Clinton supporters to work to stick a stake in the New American Fascist Party.

That would do more for Sanders’s legacy than any “principled opposition” to Hillary Clinton after the votes are cast in Philadelphia.

If Sanders stands against Trumpism and works to defeat him, that would make me proud to have supported him. If he chooses instead to weaken Mrs. Clinton in the election, I will be ashamed I was hoodwinked.

I await my candidate’s choice. I do hope it is the right one (oppose fascism and hatred at all costs).

Sanders’s family were immigrants from Poland. So were mine (escaping the Nazis). I want Sanders to stand against what my family fought against in WW2.

It’s impossible to think too much about it. I think the Presidency’s pretty well taken care of, but we have to figure out some way to generate enough enthusiasm to take the House in a census year. If we don’t, it’s more GOP gerrymandering until at least 2040, the next opportunity.

If you’re worried about gerrymandering, you need to focus on state legislatures, they’re the ones who actually determine legislative districts (unless your state has a nonpartisan panel that handles that, like California).

It’s like I was saying earlier - after yesterday’s story that she hit Trump up for a donation before she dropped the case, this story sure makes it look like she knew exactly what she was doing and now wants to make it look like it was all an innocent mistake.

I hope she’s sitting in her office sweating bullets right now. And I really hope that someone decides to file an ethics complaint at the very least.

The media keeps harping on Hillary not being ‘trustworthy.’ But now in two separate instances, we’ve got what for all intents and purposes looks like Trump bribing his way out from under a fraud investigation.

Hey Lizards! Nice crisp cool blue sky June day here in Ohio. High 74°. I love these kind of days.

Reading through the overnight thread and this one I caught the complaints from the Bernie supporters crying about voting problems.

I would invite them to step back in time…2004 Ohio…the presidential elections between Bush And Kerry. Go through that crap and we can talk!

If you lived in the inner cities of Ohio you would understand the complete frustration of a constant hundred+ people in a long snaking line waiting to use four voting machines while hearing new line joiners speaking of images on the local news of people in the burbs being able to walk right in and choose between ten machines. Places that maybe saw 200 people all freaking day.

Yeah…we stayed…sometimes for 3+ hours…standing…and we voted.

I don’t want to hear it.

I realize that it reminds me of the downfall of my old boss. He finally had reached the point in his career where he was well known to folks in the scientific community, the investment communit, and had built a reputation as a genius who had great new ideas with great medical and moneymaking potential. So he started his own company, with a great idea, and avoided the pitfalls of Venture Capital financing. But he knew that many founders ended up pushed aside by the investors as soon as they figured the could get away with it.

So, he hired a lawyer he knew was a shark as President, figuring that this guy would protect him from all that. But the shark was the one who pushed him out, and in the sleaziest way possible. My boss was the Frog to his Scorpion.

And now, there are millions of Frogs out there who want to give a Scorpion the White House.

VA is now effectively two completely disparate voting zones. NoVa votes blue and SoVa votes red. The population is rising faster in the north than in the south. QED. Keep up the good work.

“How Bernie Sanders Can Still Become President”*
“How Sanders Won The Money Primary”

To be fair, there’s also one titled, “What Kind Of Loser Will Bernie Sanders Be? He’s Got Three Choices.” But I’m surprised there’s also not some headline about how Hillary’s “going to be arrested over e-mails any second now.”

*spoiler alert: it involves secession

Or how she came to get it. I buy designer things (that I could and would never pay retail for).

And I don’t remember seeing anything on Rmoney’s or Trump’s clothing choices.

This vapid and unreal misogyny drives me insane. I am a serious feminist. I never looked at Hillary as being fantastic for being the first woman presidential candidate for a major party. I always looked at her as being fantastic for being the most qualified. Maybe there is something wrong with me in that, maybe my feminist cred needs polishing. But shit like this really, really pisses me off.

Trump’s racism/nativism goes a whole lot deeper than the media is even willing to consider. Attacking Judge Curiel is only skimming the surface. Comments were 80% against (“we can’t even take care of our own”; “what about Vets?”; “I have a hard enough time getting my welfare check and then they come and take up all the resources…”;—-I cleaned up the grammar and spelling a bit). I’m old school on ship names. Subs should be fish (pre 688 class) or city names (688 and forward). Surface ships, especially cruisers, LHCs, and CVs should be battle names, follow prior named ships, or at least wait until the person is deceased before naming.

That last bit is one thing that bothers me about current naming rules. Time was, the ships were named only posthumously. No more.

That’s something that struck Rommel (?) too. I seem to recall that he noted that the Germans were running short of fuel at around the time of the Ardennes campaign (Battle of the Bulge), while US aircraft that were shot down included gifts/presents to soldiers.

That the US could spare effort for gifts to its soldiers showed that there was no chance of winning the war. The US simply had the logistics to see it through when the Nazis couldn’t.

I think Trump shifted the focus to racism intentionally. Sure the politicos are shocked, SHOCKED, that their candidate said something racist, but Trump is counting on his voters not caring. And now they have been fed an excuse to ignore Trump U findings: the judge was biased!

Sorry, I had to duck out to send out a message to the village noting Flag Day. (I am the lib socialist hippie Democrat who is also the flag committee chair. Keeps ‘em guessing.)

Mr. Trump is only saying out loud what the GOP has been sending in dog whistles since President Nixon started the Southern Strategy and President Reagan opened his campaign in Philadelphia, Miss.

Perhaps we should start a GoFundMe for a fainting couch for the Republican Party Chair?

I agree, though my theory is that he did it to distract from the growing sense that he is, to put it politely, not as rich as he pretends to be. But there are two side-effects:
1. Trump’s racist dead-enders are locked in tighter.
2. He’s lost the center.

Yellowstone NP park rangers have had a rough time of it lately with visitors engaging in a wide range of dumbassery (taking bison calves into car because they thought it was cold, is particularly dumbassing), but it appears that someone decided to walk off one of the boardwalks at Norris basin and is presumed drowned in one of the hot springs.

You’re walking around the caldera of an active volcano. Going off trail in these areas could lead you into all kinds of trouble.

It’s another reminder of why the NPS had to close the parks when the GOP shutdown the government a few years ago. It’s because people act stupidly, and the NPS has to bail them out of their dumbassery.

My wife the former Libertarian Party campaign treasurer, and self-described Head Cynic (click on my name to go to her Website on cynicism) is convinced that Trump will sweep the election. (Not because she is a Trump supporter; she was behind Mr. Sanders and now solidly supports Mrs. Clinton. She thinks that the GOP will try to swipe the election through electronic shenanigans.)

I point out to her the starting positions in safe electoral votes (the Democratic Party starts way ahead and only needs a couple swing states or Florida to win). She says the math doesn’t matter; conservatives are not interested in democracy so stealing an election through electoral fraud would be justified as “saving the nation from liberals.”

Then she left to go get some eggs from our ex-mayor, who has too many chickens to eat all the eggs they lay so he gives extra to us. Gotta keep up with priorities: She thinks the GOP might steal the election but we are out of fresh eggs.

I think you are right that Trump is not as rich as he says he is. His refusal to release tax information, and his slow turn-around with the veterans’ charity both hint at financial difficulty. Frankly, that he would even have risked his name on that scam “university” seems like a peculiar choice for a billionaire. He supposedly only got around 5 million out of a scam that went on for years.

Check was received in Sep. 2013. Bondi’s PAC attempted to return the $25,000 in Mar., after questions were raised when she endorsed Trump. And, suddenly realizing the Trump Foundation is a charity, and such a donation apparently violates rules concerning political activities by charities.
Trump Foundation refused to accept the returned funds.

But I do hope that conservative readers who are still in denial about Trump’s character will believe me when I say that I really don’t cry wolf about such things, and I’m warning you right now that if you vote for Trump, you’ll be voting for a man who thinks women, including your mother, your wife, and any daughters you might have, are effectively objects for men to acquire, consume, and dispose. Actually, conservatives, let me put this to you even more bluntly: Is your daughter’s body attractive enough to elicit Donald Trump’s sexual arousal? If that question offends you, I’d recommend that you don’t vote for a candidate who would use that standard to determine her value as a human being.

I was working in Olympia, WA on election day 2004, and as soon as I saw pics of the lines at polling places on Cleveland Avenue in Columbus contrasted with those in Grandview, I started crying and knew the worst was about to happen.

It’s remarkable to look back on the 2004 election and have it feel almost kinda inconsequential. GWB was, in retrospect, an incompetent governor that screwed up a lot of the country for the better part of a generation… who nonetheless basically grasped how the government was supposed to work and didn’t publicly display outright hostility toward people because of the color of their skin.

And, I mean, I also wept at the time.

That is the history of America. Our fight is to transform our country and to understand that we are in this together. That is what OUR movement is about.

The struggle continues. We are going to fight for every vote in Tuesday’s primary in Washington, DC, and then we will bring our political revolution to the Democratic convention in Philadelphia.

Say that you will continue to fight for the progressive future our country needs by adding a $2.70 contribution to our campaign today.

I am pretty good at arithmetic, and I know that the fight in front of us is a very, very steep fight, but we will continue to fight for every vote and every delegate we can get.

Clearly, you’re not Bernie. You’re awful at math. Or logic. Because there’s absolutely no math that gets you ahead, not with DC remaining and your odds of winning DC and switching all the supers to your side is somewhere between the Chitauri coming down later this afternoon for a stroll through Grand Central Terminal and mathematicians announcing that Pi has a definite end. Which is to say, impossible.

It can’t be done. It wont be done. The Supers will not go against the popular vote that saw Bernie lose by a large margin. He couldn’t win NJ last night, and he got blown out in CA too. Wishful thinking isn’t a strategy.

But apparently thinks that this is the only way to settle his campaign debts after he ran up more bills than Hillary did.

I got that E-mail

I am in support of Senator Sanders fighting for every vote he can. This is an election.

That said, when the count of the delegates is done in Philadelphia and he comes up short, I don’t want the guy I supported to burn down the party (or the best chance the Democrats have ever had of driving a stake through the GOP’s heart).

Presuming Mr. Sanders is going to get on board once the primaries are over, I can see the Libertarians taking over as the second major party from the GOP. (They already are in every state, have a coherent if unsatisfying message for this liberal, and they aren’t running a talking fascist yam for President.)

About every forty years or so there is a party shift (or a party implodes). It is about time for the GOP to take up their destiny here. The Party of Lincoln left the GOP long ago and became Democrats.

In 1968, on The Smothers Brothers Show, Pat Paulsen was ‘running for President’. The episode after the election, they show ‘Paulsen Headquarters’, looking like the aftermath of a party. Paulsen himself is asleep, but wakes up, goes to the Podium, and starts thanking everyone for his historic victory.

Then he stops, turns the paper over, and reads a concession speech.

I think Bernie read from the wrong side of his notes.

To me, the Sanders email is a transparent statement to justify his staying in the election this far, not an indication he’s going to be a bad actor. “I wanted 95% of the country to vote” is not a cogent argument for staying in long after he lost a plausible path to victory, “I wanted 100%” is somewhat more so. The drop from $27 to $2.70 reflects that. He’s trying to slowly turn down the berner.

But I’m definitely prone to reading tea leaves in a way that pleases me. I hope that’s what he’s doing.

I remember the Senior Week Pub Crawl in college. A friend and I were in the final bar, or at least, the final bar we were going to. One of our classmates was there, a young woman, who was clearly WAY beyond tipsy. She was reaching sloppy drunk, the maudlin stage.

We really weren’t her friends, or anything - barely knew her. But we walked her back to campus, and delivered her to her dorm room, because THAT’S what you do with somebody who has reached that stage.

You get them home, you keep them safe. You don’t try and fuck them behind a dumpster. It’s not something I was taught - I didn’t have to be taught that. It’s what you do.

re: #393 stpaulbear

Yep.

As I noted up the page, Mr. Sanders would do more to advance his agenda by advancing it within the party rather than standing outside screaming “get off my lawn.”

Sanders has a lot of good ideas that only need technocrats who work on such things to make them viable. I am all for Mr. Sanders fighting for his ideas in Philadelphia: He earned a slew of delegates and deserves to be at the convention.

But when he loses that vote (and there is no question about it now), I would like Mr. Sanders to support the candidate running against fascism. Sanders’s family is from Poland, so is mine. He should be familiar with what fascism did to our families. I don’t want to see him oppose Clinton knowing what fascism has done to both our families.
