The GOP shitshow continues:

Trying to figure out a way to sideline Trump as he takes the clown bus known as the GOP over the cliff. And their purported options are actually worse for the GOP than they even let on.

They’d have open warfare if they try to deny the guy who beat everyone else in the field soundly and claimed the popular mandate, even if the guy is a rabid bigot (well, so too are the core GOP voters who supported him) and absolutely ignorant about policies, facts, or civics (well, so too are most GOPers, who are know-nothings and do-nothings, especially in Congress).

I’m going to bed, but thought I’d leave with one last tidbit about the pizza problem rocking the nation. The question is in fact intended to see if kids understand comparing fractions only makes sense if they refer to the same size units. This is from a draft scope and sequence plan I found by googling.

Compare two fractions with the same numerator or
the same denominator by reasoning about their size.
Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two
fractions refer to the same whole
. Record the results of
comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the
conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

(p. 20)

This is keyed to the Envision Grade 3 Common Core Math curriculum by Pearson, but an earlier version than the one discussed in the last thread.

Exactly. Without this core understanding you may as well forget about fractions altogether.

Great question.

I’ve been hanging out on #blacktwitter too much lately. Chaperoned a field trip today and had 3 girls. My daughter and two others. My daughter and one of the girls (both white) are doing the “Watch Me Whip” dance. I’m sitting with the third girl, I look at her and had to bite my tongue, almost said to her “white people, am I right?”.

More information about the shooting:

DALLAS — Video shot outside of Love Field Airport on Friday afternoon appears to show an officer-involved shooting that may have stemmed from a domestic dispute.

“All I know is that it was a police incident in the baggage claim area,” said City of Dallas spokesperson Joe Torres, who was on his way to the scene.

Sources told News 8’s Rebecca Lopez the incident began when a man was attacking a woman in a vehicle. He charged at officers who responded to the attack, and at least one officer fired a weapon several times.

Ray Williams, who witnessed the attack, said a man went after officers with the rock after being asked to stop.

Sorry for such a long comment, but I ran across this rant in a comment thread from a post about how awful Reagan was. The “#1” he is referring to was Reagan’s closing down mental hospitals and its effect on jails, prisons and the mentally ill. This deserves to be widely read.

Here’s an interesting statistic regarding #1: I am a police officer in the United States, the county I work in has the largest inmate population on the state. As of 01:00 this morning our jail housed 2238 inmates, not including the ~80-120 that are in booking waiting to be processed, bonded out, or released.

Our jail is technically the largest mental health facility in the state.

Approximately 60% of the residents in the jail are either homeless or have mental health conditions preventing gainful employment.

Approximately 15% of the homeless people in the jail are veterans of the United States Military.

Our jail has 1800 bunks.

Our jail has 7 floors housing inmates, not including booking/releasing. Each floor is designed to be staffed by 10 officers per shift, for a total of 70 housing officers, not including the ~5 needed for the kitchen, ~15 needed for booking/releasing, and ~20 support staff to fill miscellaneous roles. This is a total of roughly 100 officers per shift.

The average platoon (shift) manpower strength was at 34. This number includes officers that regularly come in for overtime.

Our budget shortfall has potential to create layoffs.

I’m begging you, actually begging you people reading this, please, please elect people that will help us. It is not my fault that my governor and county commissioners point blank refuse to give us the money and manpower to do our jobs. It is not fair to task 18 year old kids making $12.41/hr with a can of mace with diagnosing, caring for, and dealing with severely mentally handicapped and frequently violent people the state shuffles over to us on the grounds that “well, they’re technically criminals.” I am no longer in the jail, but I was, and I know how bad it really is. The scary part is that our story is not unique, all over the country the CJS is being used by the state to soak up mentally ill people that truly don’t know better and often can’t find the help they need, and even when they can find it, can’t afford it. last winter our number of inmates shot up to over 3000 (remember, 1800 bunks) because people would rather live in a 10x10 concrete box with three other men than be cold and hungry on the street. Guess who was blamed by the media for not providing adequate housing? Was it the commissioners who denied our budget requests and refused to submit a tax (which would solve 100% of our problems) to vote? Was it the Governor who sunk our last remaining state-run mental hospital on the grounds that it was “a waste of taxpayer dollars.”?

No, they blamed the pimply, 18 year old officers outnumbered 66 to 1. They blamed the 19 year old Corporal (that’s right, the boss of one of those floors of mentally ill and murderers alike is too young to buy a beer) trying to desperately keep morale up by using his “supervisor privileges” (such as a lunch break, and an extra $80 a month) to get his tired officer(s) some Chinese food.

Random: I have a Yorkie and he needs a haircut. All the groomers are booked way out in advance right now. I have been cutting my own hair for about 3 years using regular clippers. How bad an idea would it be for me to cut his hair? I am thinking it is probably a terrible idea.

Heh. Just went to Jalopnik to see something about them being connected to Gawker and came across this…

Cops Tackle Citi Biker as He Rides Toward Obama Motorcade

President Barack Obama was in New York City this week to join Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. Moments before his motorcade cruised across Park Avenue, some apparently oblivious or brazen bicyclist thought they could “make the light” and cross before POTUS. The cops were not having it.

Found the video on YouTube…it was an Instagram vid at Jalopnik.

And a bit further explanation of the outcome at NBC New York - Cops Tackle Citi Biker as He Rides Toward Obama Motorcade

The biker, who is from New York, approached the police line at the intersection of 50th Street and Park Avenue shortly after 6 p.m., authorities said.

Officers on scene shouted and signaled for him to stop, and eventually tackled him to the ground just before the president’s motorcade rolled through the intersection.

The unidentified cyclist was cuffed and given a summons for disorderly conduct, police said.

Obama was in town for a “Tonight Show” taping with Jimmy Fallon.

New York’s bike share system, Citi Bike, launched in 2013 and is the largest of its kind in the nation.

I usually use clippers, but the comb and shears way will be fine for a small dog.

The most difficult part is convincing the dog you are not playing and they have to be still.

Mine start as puppies, so by the time they are a year old, it’s like they are sitting in the barber’s chair.

Serious question for the cooks here:
I’ve got some early grape tomatoes that I want to marinate overnight, to be used in a pasta salad that I will be assembling tomorrow. The pasta salad (using rotini) will also include sliced black olives, crumbled gorgonzola, shredded spinach and (maybe) chicken or cocktail shrimp.
Which vinegar should I use for the tomato marinade: cider, balsamic or red wine? (I’ll probably include basil, thyme and oregano in the marinade.)

The first speaker is Dr Kevin Cosby, the senior pastor of St Stephen Church and president of Simmons College of Kentucky. He discusses the civil rights struggle that provided African-Americans with “a sense of somebody-ness”, name-checking Joe Louis, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson.

“And then from Louisville,” he says, pausing for applause, “emerged a silver-tongued poet who took the ethos of somebody-ness to unheard-of heights. Before James Brown said ‘I’m black and I’m proud’, Muhammad Ali said ‘I’m black and I’m pretty’.”

He continues: “He dared to love black people at a time when black people had a problem loving themselves.”

Excellent speaker.

I’d say personal preference. Balsamic is going to be the “heaviest” of the vinegars in mouth feel. Red wine or cider will be lighter.

Barry Friedman summarizes Trump’s speech to his audience of religious grifters.

“Jesus was a huge presence in the bible, huge. I mean, the testament at the end, the second one, he was the guy. What? Like four, five guys wrote about his mysterious, powerful ways. John, Paul, and—what—like two or three others? I’ve got that many books written about me … by me. And I’m very proud of myself for writing them and capturing me. But the thing is—really, folks, I’ve been thinking about this stuff for a long time. Longer than most of you—is the kids, the children that came from the beautiful women I’ve been privileged to bed. I mean, gorgeous, all of them. Real stunners. And I don’t mind showing you that side of me, the softer side. Women are, you know, super. Really, really enjoy them. I have been very fortunate, like Jesus, to have such great, strong women around me. You could say I was blessed, but blessings come to those who work hard. I’ve worked hard, very hard, and I’m proud of myself for working that hard. The bible tells us to work hard. And, America—folks, I gotta tell you—hasn’t worked hard. We’re soft. It’s disgusting, really disgusting. The bible warns about such softness in both the parts with Jesus and the parts before him. And it foreshadows—I think in one of the earlier books, Leviticus or Genesis, what happens when nations get lazy. They’re overrun. We should read the bible more in this country. We don’t read enough. I read all the time.”

Long E-mail I sent to my E-mail stable on Senator David Perdue (Jerk-Georgia).

dailymotion.com
(Video of Senator David Perdue)

Senator David Perdue (R-Ga) took to the stage at Republican operative and Christian Evangelical Ralph Reed’s “Faith and Freedom Summit” this morning. He urged the crowd in his speech to pray for President Obama and his family, citing Psalm 109:8. (Psalm 109:8 became a popular citation for evangelicals after President Obama assumed office in 2009.) The crowd laughed.

Convincing arguments from Christians on why I remain an atheist. They insist every last Muslim on Earth is responsible for the actions of the few, and let amazing numbers of people like this spread hatred or violence in the name of Jesus go unanswered (and elect them as United States Senators).

Flock, let me lead you through the Holy Bible, where we can witness the awesome power of Senator Perdue’s testimonial to Christ.

Open your King James Version of the Bible (the one God wrote and Jesus used according to American evangelicals), and turn the page to Psalm 109, starting at verse 8. And the LORD saith:

109:8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

(Arguing for his death, or perhaps impeachment for something or other - and the other taking his office will be Hillary Clinton in January you regressive dolt)

109:9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.

(Referring here to his daughters Sasha and Malia, and his wife Michelle. Take Dad away from their family.)

109:10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

(Turn them away like good Christians would. Let them starve.)

109:11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.

(Steal all their property, too.)
109:12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.

(Wishing his children be orphans and more Christian mercy on him.)

109:13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

(Forget the economy recovering, extracting us from war in Iraq, creating jobs. Blot his name from the history books, as we should have with traitors Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee who defended your Dixie state after its traitors went to war against the United States.)

109:14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

(Dogwhistle at miscegenation of his parents.)

109:15 Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

(Forget he ever existed.)

You see, that isn’t David Perdue calling for this, it is the word of the LORD (as interpreted by David Perdue). Straight out of the Old Testament (the part of the Bible Evangelicals and many other Christian sects say doesn’t apply to Christians, except when they want to put X Commandment monuments on statehouse lawns, discriminate against the group du jour, &c.)

That is your Compassionate Conservative(tm) Bible lesson for today, delivered by a United States Senator in imprecatory prayer for our nation’s President. And the crowd laughed. Amen. Pass the collection plate.

This has been going on throughout President Obama’s entire presidency since a Kansas state representative started it shortly after President Obama’s first inauguration, and I have no doubt it will continue during Hillary Clinton’s presidency. If there is one thing about conservative Christians, they are consistent. This behaviour is why I could never be a Christian (even if I did set aside logic), nor a conservative. (On the latter, apparently I am not compassionate enough.)

I get if a Republican or a Christian (they are not the same as there are many Christians who are Democrats despite GOP claims) thinks President Obama’s or the Democratic Party’s policies or plans are something they are not in agreement. Fine. Have that discussion, that is why we have a Congress and a free press. But to call on worshippers for the death of the President and call it godly (then wonder why so many nutbars have tried to assassinate him) is not compassionate. It is not democratic. It is evil.

Thanks all for the marinade vinegar feedback!
MrBWS is lobbying for the balsamic. I like Jay’s suggestion of cider vinegar with some balsamic for the flavor.

In unrelated news: MrBWS came in the house to refresh his drink (he’s doing mechanical stuff out in the shop and needed re-enforcement) and just now freaked out because for the first time in more than 20 years he heard the ghost walking up the stairs from the kitchen to the second floor (he was standing right there at the foot of the stairs when it happened) and none of the dogs even blinked about it because they are so used to the ghost’s antics.
He says he now understands why I don’t want this old house torn down after we move into the new one.

Following those allegations of flagrant voter intimidation in the lead-up to Tuesday’s state primary, the sheriff of Siskiyou County, where just about 43,000 people reside, told TPM his deputies played only a “minor” role in a state-led gumshoe probe into potential voter registration fraud. Sheriff Jon Lopey (pictured right) said deputies accompanied investigators to provide security in an area he described as potentially dangerous and “inundated” with what he estimated to be 2,000 illegal marijuana grow sites.

But the accounts of voter intimidation were serious enough that investigators from the Secretary of State’s Office, joined by staffers from the state Attorney General’s Office, were dispatched on June 7 to monitor polling places across Siskiyou County.

“What began as an investigation of alleged voter fraud quickly evolved into an investigation of potential voter intimidation,” a spokesman said in a statement emailed to TPM.

Ironically, the Secretary of State’s Office was being forced to look into acts of alleged voter intimidation performed in service of its very own probe.

Yup, and its wingnuts like Senator Perdue and Ralph Reed that caused President Jimmy Carter to withdraw from the Southern Baptist Convention, after it went off the rails.

My first vote for a President was by absentee ballot from an aircraft carrier for President Carter in 1980.

Mr. Carter is a humble man (unlike Reed and Perdue). He teaches Sunday School at his local church in Plains, Georgia. He works with his charitable foundation and does good in the world.

President Carter is an evangelical, too. But I suspect if he had no religious belief at all he would be an equally humble and good man. I suspect Reed and Perdue would be equally odious.

Ziff-Davis has apparently put in a $90-100 million bid for at least seven of Gawker Media’s properties:

On Friday, the embattled media company said it had agreed to sell all seven of its brands and other assets to the tech publisher Ziff Davis.
The Ziff Davis bid — worth $90 million to $100 million, according to sources — sets the floor for the bankruptcy auction process.
“The bidding begins now — so we will find out how much others will bid,” a source with direct knowledge of the process said.
The Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in Manhattan was motivated by the company’s agonizing and all-consuming legal fight with Hulk Hogan — a court battle that was secretly funded by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel.

I don’t understand a word this man is saying, but I can tell it’s beautiful.

It starts and ends with “To all my Relations”…… Native American spirituality is the rawest form of spirituality I can think of in its depth, beauty, and reverence to ALL things that surround us. Hence, “To all my Relations”.
{{Shivers}}……

I just emailed Senator Perdue.

All I said was I had one a word theme: Disgusting.

Then I wrote “Why don’t you Christians try to act like a Christian for once.”

I closed with “Go to Hell Senator. Or, am I just joking?”

Grrrr.

Edit: I said the ‘joking” bit because I read he said he was just joking with what he said. Yeah…funny…ha ha. Freaking jerk. Not only should he act like a Christian, he could also act like a proper statesman.

I imagine this has been said already somewhere, because it seems obvious to me, but I have been working too much to have seen it:

This one-two ‘delete your account’ punch from Hillary and Elizabeth is great, because it guarantees Trump will not delete it, and it will hasten his doom.

re: #71 Nyet

The way I see it, either the case was frivolous or not. Apparently it was not. So the question of funding is not an issue to me. That not everyone has resources to achieve this sort of justice - sucks. But that’s a separate issue.

I’m sorry, but even though I think that Nick Denton is an insufferable prick who operates his flagship property in a manner that would make the National Enquirer, Sun, and News of the World proud, Hogan and Thiel’s win was not “justice”, not in the abstract meaning of the word.

This was Thiel’s revenge on Denton served up very cold, pure and simple; why else do you think that Hogan’s legal team (handpicked and paid for by Thiel) constructed their claims in a way to exclude Gawker’s insurance company from liability, leaving Denton and Gawker Media completely on the hook for damages?

Also, had Thiel not been involved, do you think that Hogan still would have won?

re: #151 TedStriker

That Thiel avenged himself by helping Hogan win in no way diminishes the legitimacy of the verdict. It’s basically a variation of an argument ad hominem. One should deal with the verdict, not the persons who were involved in the trial (unless there is financial disparity between the two sides, in which case one could be talking about “money buying justice”, and even then not in every case.)

> Also, had Thiel not been involved, do you think that Hogan still would have won?

I have no idea, but it is also irrelevant to the point I made. If Deborah Lipstadt had not had the financial backing that she had to defend herself against David Irving in the London court, she may as well had lost. That she had such backing and Irving hadn’t doesn’t diminish the verdict against Irving.

That would become relevant had Gawker been unable to defend itself because they couldn’t finance the defense, but that is not so. If anything, Thiel leveled out the financial disparity between Hogan and Gawker.

Random: I have a Yorkie and he needs a haircut. All the groomers are booked way out in advance right now. I have been cutting my own hair for about 3 years using regular clippers. How bad an idea would it be for me to cut his hair? I am thinking it is probably a terrible idea.

Bet you wish you had a Flowbee now!

I’m pained that you would even ask, as though any upstanding Lizard would perpetrate such an atrocity as putting pineapple on a pizza. If I were dictator it would be banned. And anchovies would be banned everywhere except FEMA camp.

Well, there are other options…

Tuna and Banana Pizza. Yellow Pages.

Thanks! I think for the majority of his body it will be easy-peasy. But around the ears, snout, feet is what concerns me.

Make sure to use blunt nose scissors. Until you’re both comfortable with each other, you don’t want a pointed scissor mishap.
