Pat Robertson: Gays and Islamists Are Allies, “Let Them Kill Themselves”

Phony expressions of sympathy are not for Pat Robertson
Wingnuts • Views: 52,257

The true colors of the religious right didn’t take long to show, after the horrific attack on a gay club in Orlando. Today, Pat Robertson dispenses with the phony sympathy altogether, and says gays and Islamists are allies, so good Christians like him should just “sit on the sidelines and let them kill themselves.”

Robertson also said President Obama is “soft on terrorism” because he refuses to admit Islam is “inherently violent.” This is the demonization narrative that has taken hold of the entire conservative movement; Robertson isn’t unique in this. You’re hard-pressed these days to find any conservative who isn’t pushing it.

Again, the Clash of Cultures is not Christianity vs Islam, it is religious fundamentalism vs. secular progressivism

Before this weekend I was thinking the greatest risk of Trump winning was for there to be another terrorist attack, another San Bernardino type event.

Orlando seemed made ready to order for him. But it doesn’t look like his response to it has done him any favors, fortunately (assuming the poll reflects respondents after the weekend attack).

Here’s a major case of outsourcing fail…

Last Month, Lockheed Martin, the government contractor which operates the servers that store sensitive information about internal Air Force investigations, came to realize that all of the data on said servers was missing. The apparent reason was a run-of-the-mill system crash—but what caused that actual crash is still unclear. Now, the United Stated Air Force is reportedly missing all of its investigation records dating all the way back to 2004. Whoops!

According to Defense One, 100,000 records were lost, with investigations pertaining to everything from “workplace disputes to fraud.” The computer failure seems like quite the headache for the Air Force, and it seems that the Air Force was reluctant to tell Congress about the error.

Hey now.

The Crusades and Inquisition get way too much press.

Let’s talk about the Cathars and the Bogomils and the Waldenses and the Arians. Or Saint Olaf’s jihad extremely martial conversion of Scandanavia. Or the Baltic Crusade.

Or, you know, the killing and/or forcible conversion of the entirety of South and Central America, and large chunks of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The only reason this whole “Islam is violent” thing sells is because it’s propagators rely on people not noticing the basic double standard in which invasions and massacres by Christian rulers were about politics and economics, even if the deeds were framed with ritual and religious justification. Whereas if an invasion and/or massacre is part of jihad, it’s only about religious duty.

So when, say, Christopher Colon invades Hispaniola, enslaves all the Arawak and chops off hands when they don’t make the gold quota, plus or minus the occasional governor-sanctioned gang-rape of native women…we forget that the venality and abuse of power was directly coupled—in his journals, and in the royal mandate for his expeditions—with the importance of converting the natives by any means.

I think the GOP already knows quite fully that the presidential race is approximately hopeless. Outside of the real dead-enders, the Sessions and Gohmert!!!s of the world, they’re just trying to save their own skins.

Jeff Roe, former communications director for the Cruz campaign, says the most batshit anodyne statement about the GOP when it comes to handling Trump:

Conant: So, after Marco dropped out, I was invited by the State Department to do a bipartisan speaking tour in Australia. And the number one question I got from Australian officials was, “If he’s elected president, what happens to the U.S.-Australian relationship?” And my answer was always, “Look, our relationship with an ally like Australia is much bigger than any one individual.” And I sort of think the same about our country here. He’s just one person. And no matter how bad you think he might be, our country is stronger. We’ve had bad presidents in the past.

That seems a bit Pollyanna-ish to me. You can easily envision a case where the Australian prime minister says something that Trump takes personally, and then he decides to cut off trade with them.
Roe: The rigors of democracy check this. If he’s going after a judge in California and we’re all blowing up like this, then imagine if he starts going after an ally.

But the Republican mantra about Obama has been that this guy is an out-of-control executive, doing unconstitutional things. How can you then turn around and say, “You know, the system will restrain Trump”?
Roe: Because Republicans control themselves. We police ourselves better.

A little bit about Serco:

In September 2013, Serco was accused of extensive sexual abuse coverups of immigrants at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre prison in Bedfordshire, England [28] In August 2014, Serco was criticised for using immigrant detainees as cheap labour, with some being paid as little as £1 per hour.[29] The decision to give the firm a new £70 million eight-year contract to run Yarl’s Wood has been criticised. Natasha Walter, of Women for Refugee Women, said “Serco is clearly unfit to manage a centre where vulnerable women are held and it is unacceptable the government continues to entrust Serco with the safety of women who are survivors of sexual violence.”

The Union of Christmas Island Workers highlighted the systemic failure by Serco to manage the Christmas Island Immigration Reception and Processing Centre. The centre detains a large number of refugees including 1,000 children.[71] Under Serco, there has been an increase of deaths in custody, self-harm, and of Serco staff beating prisoners. As well, there has been a deterioration of facilities leading to the decline of the physical and the mental health of detainees and of staff. Ombudsman Allan Asher said on the Australian radio show AM, “In the first week of June when I visited Christmas Island, more than 30 incidents of self-harm by detainees held there were reported”.[71] Serco, in a staged memo leaked to The Australian, blamed the detainees for “creating a culture of self-harm”, in order to use it as a “bargaining tool”.[71] The former manager of the Serco run detention centre stated the centre was grossly understaffed whereby it was “typically 15 staff members short every day”.[71]

In Auckland, New Zealand, Serco runs the Mount Eden Prison remand prison[72] and in March 2012 was awarded the contract to build and operate a 960-bed prison at Wiri.[73] Serco was heavily criticized for the existence of ‘fight clubs’ within Mt Eden prison that were not investigated until after they became public knowledge on July 16, 2015 when footage emerged online and was reported by TVNZ.[74] However, on 24 July 2015, Serco was revoked the right of running the prison and Mt Eden prison was given back to the New Zealand Department of Corrections to run.[75] Serco was ordered to pay $8 million to the New Zealand government as a result of problems at Mt Eden Prison while it was under Serco’s management.[76]

But it’s good to know that no information on DNC donors was exposed or ever at risk, or that their financial information wasn’t ever compromised. Fortunately, Russian hackers are only interested in over-sized Oompa Loompas. Right…

OT: I’m baaaaack! Good weekend NOT to be listening to the news much. Horrific. Disgusting. Painfully predictable. The useless things will be repeated at length. The useful actions probably won’t be taken. So very tired of being numb to tragedy.

My niece’s wedding was beautiful. DFW was humid, but didn’t do more than sprinkle at the beginning and end of the ceremony itself. Getting my mom together with all five kids, nine out of ten grandkids, and three great-grandbabies — priceless. Really enjoyed seeing all of them! (Didn’t discuss religion or politics except with the Bernie-leaning sister from Boston. Happy to hear that she’s a bit disappointed with her candidate and impressed with mine, and so ticked off at the Bern-or-Busters in her Facebook circle that she’s gleeful about voting for Hillary in November.)

Getting out of Texas was a pain in the patoot, however, as the rain caught up to us. Most of us had flight delays; the worst was my oldest sister who spent three hours ON the plane, on the runway, with her daughter and 21-month-old granddaughter before they finally took off at 4pm for what was supposed to be the 10:30am flight. Me, I just spent four hours in the airport with the little old 91-year-old mother (in a wheelchair, on oxygen) and the tired 17-year-old kid (carrying all the carry-ons) waiting for a flight that got cancelled. Fortunately brother-in-law came to rescue us and we spent another night with the parents of the bride before we flew home this morning.

Everyone enjoyed themselves. Everyone survived. Good times, and a couple of cut-throat card games. Family fun.

And I now am reconciled to the fact that I didn’t manage to get tickets to see Steely Dan at Red Rocks last night. Will have to go back and check the threads to see if Teleskiguy posted any of the video clips, but there seems to have been a wee bit of rain up there. Not to mention marble-sized hail. It looked rather impressive, and quite uncomfortable.

How goes it with the Lizards? No major health or other problems with the crew, I hope.

re: #156 Charles Johnson

I’ve said many times that republicans in D.C. should be dancing in the streets and should call for a huge parade. Their plans succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. After they lost the presidency in 2008, they set out to deliberately throw a huge tempter tantrum and make sure the federal government became as dysfunctional as possible. They accomplished their mission, so why are they despondent? I think it’s because as they were plotting the president’s demise and using RW media outlets to do it, the long-term effects of their actions were never examined. The chickens have come home to roost and are sh*tt*ng all over them, and now they haz the sadz. I have zero sympathy for them.

I read an article yesterday in which a high school friend, who is also Muslim, says that he and other friends of Mateen’s thought he was gay. If he was, I figure he had to have been living under a lot of stress having a dad who detested LGBTQ persons. Many who interacted with him at Pulse say that he did not get along with his father and thought his father was too strict.

Good luck with the problem and the meds.

The VA clinic here called yesterday and told me I would need to call the pharmacy directly for my meds for my Canada trip, because she can get nowhere with them. I asked her to send me a printout from my medical record showing my epilepsy diagnosis and the current prescription order for my medications, so I can get them in Canada if I have to.

In the meantime, I left a message for the pharmacy (they do not answer the phone.) No call back twenty-four hours later.

Not for one minute will I believe that these 49 deaths at Pulse will really change their attitude toward our LGBTQ citizens. I’ve grown somewhat skeptical of American-style near-absolute freedom of speech, to be quite honest with you. The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office filed three felony charges against James Wesley Howell, 20, as well as one misdemeanor charge, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Sean Carney.

The felony charges were possession of explosives on a highway, possession of an assault weapon and possession of high-capacity magazines. The misdemeanor charge was possession of a firearm in a car.

more:

A bail deviation filing obtained by The Times shows that along with the weapons and explosive chemicals in the car, Howell had a black hood, a Taser, handcuffs, a Buck knife, a security badge and additional ammunition for the guns. There was also a filled five-gallon container of gasoline.

Police said Howell has no known ties to California and that he admitted to officers that he fled the state “due to his concerns over existing or pending criminal charges by the state.”

According to court documents, Howell was in possession of a 25-pound container of “Shoc-shot,” a commercially sold two-component explosive that detonates when hit by a high-velocity rifle round. Santa Monica police said that the container was three-fifths full and that the explosive chemicals had already been combined.

This. Statewide gun regulations have little effect when you can drive halfway across the country from a state that practically issues guns at birth (Indiana). And except for driving across Illinois, his trip was across 1,500 miles of red states with poor regulations.

(I shudder to think this wingnut likely drove across Nebraska.)

I don’t have the answer to what sort of regulations would be appropriate versus infringements on civil liberties, but they need to be nationwide regulations.

Other civil liberties are regulated by the Federal government (free speech, religious freedom, quartering troops in homes though that doesn’t come up much, &c).

Does anybody here want to go to a club (or anywhere else) where the security looks like it just came from the set of dystopic sci fi movie??

The shooter has the advantage of making the first move. Identifiable armed security will simply be the first targets if the security is not massive and the shooter prepares competently. Unidentifiable armed security creates other serious issues.

The NRA utopia of good guys with guns blowing away bad guys with guns in a way that somehow actually works is even more fanciful and unrealistic than the communist or libertarian utopias, which is actually quite an achievement.

There is no developed nation example of the kind of gun rights anarchy the NRA would like to see implemented. The reason is simply that such gun rights anarchy is incompatible with civilization.

Today, HRC Mississippi hailed the Jackson, Mississippi City Council for voting to advance city-wide non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing, public accommodations and employment. Passed by a 7-0 vote, the measure also expands the city’s hate crimes statute to include tougher penalties for perpetrators who commit crimes motivated by the victim’s real or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

“As the LGBTQ community grapples with the horrific massacre in Orlando, it is truly encouraging to see the Jackson City Council taking decisive action to protect and affirm the rights of all their citizens,” said HRC Mississippi State Director Rob Hill. “Discrimination and hate have no place in Jackson, and everyone, regardless of who they are, should have the legal right to feel safe in their community. We thank Councilman Tyrone Hendrix for his continued leadership on issues of equality, and are confident that the Council’s actions will serve as an example to communities across the country.”
