Paul Ryan Threatens to Sue Donald Trump Over His Bizarre Anti-Muslim Immigration Ban

Bad craziness
Politics • Views: 40,069

You just gotta look at this and marvel at how insane the Republican presidential race has become. The GOP Speaker of the House is now talking about suing their own presumptive nominee over his bizarre, openly bigoted plan to ban Muslim immigration. And yet, he still wants to see Trump elected president.

This has to be the weirdest and most disturbing political campaign in history.

In a sit-down interview in his ceremonial Capitol Hill office on Thursday, Ryan told The Huffington Post that Trump does not have “a blank check” with his endorsement. “I don’t know what that line is,” Ryan said, “but right now, I want to make sure that we win the White House.”

[…]

He added that unity was difficult to achieve when you have “principles” — presumably like the ones that say people shouldn’t be barred from entering the country on the basis of their religion — “being violated.”

On the topic of Trump’s proposed Muslim ban and his statements that he could enact such a policy without Congress, Ryan noted that Republicans were releasing part of their agenda on executive overreach that very day, and, in news that’s sure to please Trump, Ryan suggested that he and the House of Representatives were prepared to sue a Republican president if need be.

“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers,” Ryan said.

Yeeeeeaaaahhh….bullshit. I’d sooner believe that Ryan would drop trou and bend over for Trump on live TV than I would believe that Republicans would sue their own guy in the White House over overreach.

6
lawhawk  Jun 17, 2016 • 2:30:04pm

Sue the President in court they said. It’ll be a piece of cake they said.

These people (Ryan and GOPers who haven’t gone completely batcrap insane) think that lawsuits will somehow keep Trump in line?

Trump doesn’t listen to anyone or anything except the voices coming from the sentient thing inhabiting his scalp.

He doesn’t listen to advisers. He doesn’t listen to Reince or Ryan or anyone else in the GOP heirarchy.

Why would he listen to the courts? Why would the courts even want to get involved in a political dispute? They’re loathe to do so.

But that the GOP is even in this position to contemplate suing their own nominee to keep him in check shows just how insane Trump truly is and how he in no way should ever have been in this position - and that we cannot allow him to be President.

Dear Paul Ryan. You have it all backwards. You are supposed to put your money where your mouth is. NOT put your mouth where the money is. Ryan is going to sue. Oh fuck off. He’s all yours. Lock. Stock. And barrel. Own it. Coward.

15

What Ryan is really saying is they’ll consider suing him. They’ll pick somebody to take the hit by putting up the bill to sue, it’ll go to a vote where Republicans will squash it flat, then they’ll throw up their hands and declare “Sorry, but the vote stands!”

Previous thread died.

Wife now on a three-way call with bank and hotel in Churchill; the bank wants her to charge the hotel over the Internet.

The hotel says no, Churchill’s Internet service is open unsecured wireless and that would expose her credit card data.

The bank doesn’t seem to see a problem with using unsecured wireless to use a credit card.

WTF?

After the hotel and my wife argued with the bank for fifteen minutes, the bank finally agreed to let her charge the hotel reservation over the phone.

Yup, I think we need to ditch Bank of America. (No one issues credit cards in our local banks, so we would have to apply somewhere else via the mail.)

Credit card data is usually only exposed if the site being accessed is not secure via HTTPS. The encryption is done before the data leaves your computer, so the state of the wireless connection is irrelevant. That being said, a casual attitude towards security concerns by their users is definitely a valid reason to ditch them.

You can also try double-tapping the home button, then swiping the Safari thumbnail up off the screen. This forces it to relaunch from scratch and might help without going all the way through a reset.

Wingnut dumbassery reaches epic levels:

Yes, people have been murdered with box cutters, gasoline, and fertilizer, but these are not the weapons of choice for dozens of killings a day, year in and year out, nor are they made for the specific purpose of killing as quickly and efficiently as possible. Even fertilizer based explosives have many, many non-lethal uses.

And boxcutters are banned from the environment where they killed 3000. They might also be surprised how much attention an unexplained bulk purchase of ammonium nitrate draws. Misuse of mogas is also illegal—read the pump.

One of these things is not like the other: The one that has practically no regulations.

Box cutters used one time in a terror attack: Banned on aircraft
Fertilizer used one time in a terror attack: Must have a license to buy any significant quantity.
Gasoline: Not legal to sell to minors, regulated for sale, &c.

I’m almost convinced that a lot of mass foolishness is a kind of “naked emperor” phenomenon. Very few actually believe the nonsense, but they all think most of the others do, and they are in it for the grift. I think this is especially true of outlandish conspiracy theories, commercialized religion, and pseudoscience like creationism.

I think, too, that with a lot of conservatives the “with us or against us” mentality applies - if you question my meme, you must not really be “on the team,” and they don’t want their loyalty to Team Wingnut questioned, so they would rather not rock the boat. Between that and the confirmation bias effect pointed out by Blind Frog above, I guess I can see why so much utterly silly crap gets passed around.
It can be tough to be intellectually honest and rigorous - it can be uncomfortable to honestly question one’s own assumptions or ideas - but if you can’t at least try, what’s the point of having a brain? (Other than to keep my melon from sounding hollow when it gets smacked, that is.)

Maybe this is crazy, but I’m pretty sure we have 4.7% unemployment. It seems like we don’t need “jobs” so much as “employers actually willing to pay people a living wage for jobs.”

This business of questioning prior thinking can be irritating. My personal challenge along these lines is I can’t maintain my prior 100% conviction that Heller was wrongly decided.

Almost. The Woodlands, Texas:

As of 2010, there were 93,847 people. The racial makeup was 88.4% White, 2.4% Black or African American, 0.3% American Indian and Alaska Native, 4.9% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, 2.1% Two or More Races, 12.3% Hispanic or Latino, and 78.5% White alone, not Hispanic or Latino.

2.4% Black is an amazingly low percentage for that part of the state.

Shiplord Kirel  Jun 17, 2016 • 4:35:26pm

re: #140 Shiplord Kirel

To my chagrin, this roughly matches the percentages in my own home turf, Palo Pinto County:

The racial makeup of the county was 88.19% White, 2.32% Black or African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.56% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 13.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

This area, too, is infested with wingnuts, though not to the degree found in the Houson suburbs. This may be related to its primarily rural rather than suburban character. Palo Pinto is one of the very few counties in the country whose seat is not in an incorporated community. The courthouse and associated offices are in the unincorporated crossroads of Palo Pinto, population 425. There is almost nothing there but the courthouse, a grand old structure that is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is weird to see this standing practically by itself in the middle of nowhere, almost like a medieval manor house.

Retired miner who tried to tackle Jo Cox’s attacker was also hero of colliery disaster

In 1973 Mr Kenny was a member of the Gomersal Mines Rescue Brigade when he and his colleagues rushed to the scene of the Lofthouse Colliery disaster.

Seven miners died after water flooded the pit in Wakefield, but only one body was ever recovered.

Speaking on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy, Mr Kenny said: “It was rough. The conditions we had to work in were rough. I’ve never seen conditions like it and I never want to see them again. It was very bad.

“You were up to your neck in water and breathing apparatus was needed because there was a high percentage of gas.

“But we went on with it because you ought to do. It was your duty to try and help them and it was sad when it had to be called off.”

MAN WITH GUN ARRESTED AT TRUMP RALLY LOCATION IN THE WOODLANDS

As preparations continue for Donald Trump to take the stage in The Woodlands, authorities had to make an arrest at the rally location.

A man with a gun was taken into custody Friday afternoon in the parking garage of the hotel.
*snip*
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office brought in an incident command center, limited access, and put up barriers for the safety of those attending and those who might protest. Harris County deputies were there to assist. The Transportation Security Administration brought dogs for security checks. The United States Secret Service is in charge of security for the event.

KPRC TV has video of the arrest. The subject appears to be black so freepers are delirious with joy, though noone knows what his intentions were or even if his presence was connected with the Trump event.

It occurred to me that if a man with a gun were found in a parking garage next to a British venue where a politician was about to speak, he would almost certainly be an intended assassin. In Texas, though, there are so many people wandering around with guns that it might well be coincidence.

This is fucking funny (emphasis mine)

Ever the troublesome naysayers, the Associated Press points out that the shooter, Omar Mateen, did indeed claim to be working on behalf of ISIS. But he also claimed to be affiliated with al Qaeda and Hezbollah, which are both at war with ISIS in Syria. It’s almost as if the guy just rattled off the names of any radical terrorist groups that came to mind regardless of ideological consistency. (We mean Mateen, but it works for McCain, too.)

The Perineum Four up there wanted to show how much they love them some Second Amendment and, to them, a spray-tanned man who lives in a fancy golden apartment is just the candidate to stand up for them and their mighty weapons of self-defense and ground-standing. Head of the OECD says that Donald Trump is a racist.

Angel Gurría, head of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the former finance minister of Mexico, told Al Jazeera on Friday that “the word racist can be applied” to the presumptive Republican nominee.

In the interview, Gurría said he agreed with comments from former Mexican President Vicente Fox, who called Donald Trump a racist several months ago. Trump has claimed that some Mexican immigrants who enter the U.S. illegally are “rapists,” and has vowed to build a wall between the U.S. and its neighbor to the south.

Who cares about trade?

Stupid and short-sighted as this remark of Trump’s is, (a shock, I know!) it shouldn’t be a surprise. From everything I’ve read on the Trump campaign for nearly a year, it’s a media trope (a cliche, really), that the typical (archetypical? stereotypical?) Trump voter is a blue-collar or lower-end white-collar guy, who has either suffered, or fears that he will suffer, the loss of his job to “free trade” - which they usually view as “jobs leaving taken away from MY neighborhood for some rice-infested sweatshop in Outer East Crapistan” What Donald Trump plans to (or can) do about it is usually a bit vague, but his rhetoric definitely involves punishing somebody (somebody they don’t like), so they’ll wave away the details….

Daesh has quit using its gold and silver coinage it rolled out with such fanfare against Western decadent “fiat banknotes.” That video even included clips of Ron Paul arguing the libertarian position that inflation is theft.

Apparently, to get anything done, it turns out they need banknotes; in Daesh-controlled territory, since Iraq quit paying public employees in territory controlled by Daesh, they are now only accepting American Dollars for things like electric and tax payment.

Yes.

They only ever liked “capitalism” because they imagined that it was the nature of capitalism that people like them were the whole market, and the sole winners.

Now they’re grokking that they are not the sole consumer force, nor the sole source of entrepreneurial drive, so they’re accusing capitalism of not-being-capitalism.
