Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Davis at Gloucester Cathedral, where in 1910, it was played and conducted for the first time by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.

This is possibly the finest ever performance of this most beautiful piece.

Ah, finally: some classical. Decent piece here, BTW.

Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” is a good work, too.

Question because I’m confused: How can the orchestra perform in sync when there’s so much space between sections of musicians? With that much space to cover, they can’t possibly be hearing each other without some time delay. Is this a video staged after the actual live performance?

Conductor.

Conductor.

I thought of that, but the conductor can’t prevent the sections from hearing each other without a time delay.

You don’t need to hear everyone. You watch the conductor and hear those around you. My high school band had 470 people and we would spread across the football field. We knew when to play. It was the same thing with 180 people on stage.

Natural room dynamics. Look at the height of the ceilings. Natural echo, delay and reverb. The sections are reading music and following……the conductor. It’s a dance. being led by the conductor. The room is everything. That is the dynamics.

How shall we deal with the conundrum that is Chuck the Cuck-obsessed closet case? He seems to be determined to establish and maintain a presence on Twitter. But at this point, we have to ask, to what purpose?

None of his former comrades-in-arms at NRO, Red State, etc., will take him seriously. Only the screeching fools at Breitbart will make time for him, and that’s the equivalent of trying to have a constitutional law seminar at a Chuck E. Cheese’s.

Is the cycle of “sock puppet-discovery-report-suspension” accomplishing anything, if we do it immediately upon discovery? Or would it be better to allow the Rage Furby to think he’s getting away with something - to get him to pour all his time, energy and vitriol into building his virtual “empire” … and then report him and bring it down again.

Which is ultimately more instructive for CCJ? To be thrown out the moment decent people discover his presence? Or to settle in, and brag to his friends about his newfound status … and then get humiliatingly frogmarched out to the jeers of the crowd and the derisive laughter of those he mistakenly thought his friend?

The staging in this piece is wonderful and something that would be much harder to do with an audience. It does however reflect the very nature of the piece:

Given the new interest in color, Vaughan Williams seems almost perverse in writing a piece for string choir, usually thought of as homogenous. He also eschews the flashier string effects of col legno, glissando, martellato, and so on. He gets most of his contrast by dividing the strings into three groups of unequal strength:

1. A general choir - designated as orchestra I
2. A smaller group of 9 players, consisting of 2 first violins, 2 second violins, 2 violas, 2 celli, 1 bass - orchestra II
3. A string quartet

It’s one of my favorite pieces. However, like so much in music these days, it’s kind of hard to find online, not counting YouTube.

RWNJs are hooting and screeching over this. This kind of error, a trivial slip of the tongue to sane people, is a major offense among ammosexuals. Dick Durbin Says No Self-Respecting Sportsman Uses an ‘AR-47’ to Hunt Deer in Illinois

These pedants need to check out the log in their own eye. I wish I had a dollar for each time I have heard some ignorant, but self-assured, gun humper declare authoritatively that “AR-15 is the semi-automatic version, while M-16 is the full-auto version.” Not true. AR-15 (“Armalite rifle, design 15”) is the civilian, commercial designation used by the weapon’s original manufacturer, Armalite, while M-16 is the official military designation. There are both fully automatic (“select fire”) and semi-automatic AR-15s. Many AR-15s were used by US forces in Vietnam, the Air Force and Special Forces, before the weapon was adopted as standard issue and given the military designation M-16. These were all select fire. My father (who was in the Air Force) had one in Vietnam in 1964 and thought very highly of it. By the time I arrived in that stricken country in 1971, it was the M-16 and few GIs knew what an AR-15 was.

Addendum: “AR-15” is a registered trademark of Colt (which bought the rights from Armalite) to this day. The semi-auto AR-15 has been marketed to civilians since 1963, though few had heard of it till fairly recently.

He’s a Dick. But 30 round mags are a commonplace necessity where those 40 point buck roam. Takes half a clip just to get them to bleed enough to track. No snow? Harder yet. Tracers at every 5th round will keep you on center before dawn. And you must pack a 357 or larger to finish them off. Even with 18 rounds in them, a mile away from the first clip……They can still get cha. Kick your teeth out.

The New Civil Rights Movement also spoke with Sanders’ spokesperson, Michael Briggs, via email.

“I’m hoping you can offer us a reason as to why, after the deaths of 49 people in the Orlando terror attack, Sen. Sanders, who has positioned himself as a long-time defender and supporter of the LGBT community, did not join in the filibuster and stand with his fellow Senators?,” NCRM asked.

“He was in Burlington, Vermont, where he had participated in a vigil on Monday night organized by Vermont Pride,” Briggs responded quickly.

When NCRM pointed out that the vigil was Monday and the filibuster was Wednesday, the Sanders campaign did not respond.

Some hunters have stared at me across the 37th glass of Natty Light and recounted the horror of it all. Try to gut it to carry out, and the whole world goes kicking hooves from HELL. I recounted my story of the 12 LB Blue I dragging on deck in rough seas off Long Beach NJ, and failed to deliver the proper head knocking to. If there were rigging to climb, I’d a climbed it. I’m lucky to be able to count to 10 on my fingers.
Surf and turf. Come loaded or leave lesser. /////// But that blue is real.

Cold water and rough seas, and you drag Mistah Blue on board, because this is your first time and nobody tells you about the non stop choppers and how totally pissed they can get when hooked and pulled out of the water.

Big fan of Vaughn Williams. First time I heard hs full name pronounced properly, though, I thought is was some German guy - Rafe von Williams?

Then the music started, and I was like, “Oh, HIM. Blood Brits, always throwing in letters, even entire syllables they don’t bother pronouncing!”

Still getting unwanted emails from Sen. Rob Portman (R - Ohio). One comment to the ass when he changed his thinking on gay marriage only after his son came out and I continue to be on his list, which I had indicated not to do on his email comment form.

I’ve tried for months to email them to point out their opt out links do not work…so opt me the hell out. I called his Ohio office and they sent me to his Washington office which has more control of his campaign. Talked to two people that will get to seeing what was going on.

But in they come…weekly updates from a guy I’ll never vote for like Bernie Sanders…I can’t get him (campaign) to stop.

I’ve even sent them to the FCC Can Spam site with a note that it is a shame a Senator can’t follow communication laws about having functioning opt out programs. Mentioned that to the Portman people too many times.

Taking wrong turns and ending up seeing new, interesting, or arguably horrifying things is part of travel. A “short cut” one morning while in France led my brother and myself to the village of Vauquois in France.

Looking north down the center of “no-mans” land
Monument on the Hill

A monument, some signs amidst a set of trails indicating the French and German trench lines, and basically indications of how a village was removed from the map by four years of warfare.

Which really doesn’t explain how some people, better hunters than you apparently, can take down that buck with a bow and arrow.

The only person I know who takes a .357 hunting is the guy who goes after wild boar.

I’m getting a Rossi 92 ( a Winchester 92 clone - an old cowboy style lever action) with a nice 24” octagon barrel in .357 magnum with the intent to hunt whitetail deer with. In a rifle, it has similar capability to the classic .30-30 and is cheaper to reload for. That I can share ammo with my revolver is simply an extra plus. I hope to finish paying for it on Friday.

The pedantic howling is to derail the argument (it is trolling). It makes no difference whether one calls a device a “clip” or a “magazine” (and in the Navy we called them clips). The pedant knows what you are talking about.

The endless minutiae about what is an assault rifle, what “well-regulated” means in the II Amendment, auto driving is not a constitutional right (it used to be considered so), all of it is to derail debate.

If the pedant had a good argument he would advance it. Because he does not, he tries to obfuscate or deflect.

I don’t often get in II Amendment discussions; in the rare case I do I just respond with “you know what I am talking about, you’re trying to deflect” and go right back in.

I really think the salient detail bout the AR / M 16 rifles is not the semi auto thing. Really the problematic feature is the large magazine that can be changed fast. I’m not gonna stick a gun image in, but Remington and others make semi auto guns for deer/elk hunting. No removable mag, just feed 5 (or so) into the mechanism one at a time to reload. Old design. Agreed. The 92 I’m buying holds 12+1 rounds of .357. OTOH, it can only be loaded one round at a time through the side gate. Not going to cause anywhere near the same amount of trouble as a half dozen 30 round STANAG magazines.

A lot of the RCA Red Seal recordings from the late 1950’s are incredibly well engineered and sonically amazing-so much so that they continually get re-issued with each change/upgrade of delivery media - the SACD re-issues are gorgeous.

A blockhouse is a good monument to the blockheaded overreliance on fixed fortifications by France in 1940.

Don’t forget how many they lost in 14 - 18. They did not have the resources to fight another such war and hoped that the fixed defenses would deter the Germans. In a way it did - they bypassed them where ever they could.

I remember stopping at one of the French military schools on leave with some other army types. The monument in the yard listed every graduate killed in action since the days of Napoleon to their colonial misadventures. It read on three lines:
Class of 1914.
Class of 1915.
Class of 1916.

Three years. No survivors. The French were bled nearly to death by the first act of the Word War.

152
Dark_Falcon  Jun 18, 2016 • 4:44:56pm

Although if you want to talk about firearms magazines, the ones supplied to the 7.5mm fortress MGs of the Maginot Line were some the biggest military mags ever, big drums holding 150 rounds.

Some of those Maginot MGs were hidden in 1940 and avoided discovery in 1940. Converted to using the 24/29 infantry MG’s conventional stock and equipped with its 25 round mag, many of those hidden MGs emerged in 1944 and returned to Alsace in the hands of the soldiers of the French 1st Army (part of US 6th Army Group). The 150 round drums? Mostly broken up for scrap.

Plus it takes place in my neighborhood, which has since been massively redeveloped and gentrified. The only remaining location is the basketball courts under the highway where the rumble takes place.

A blockhouse is a good monument to the blockheaded overreliance on fixed fortifications by France in 1940.

The interesting thing is that there is *nothing* there indicating what the ruin is from. The displays and such are for the plants, pond, bees, and the special “houses” there for carpenter/leaf cutter bees. Presumably the space is not usable for other things so it was purposed for outdoor education. And it’s a small footprint since on both sides are fields growing crops and right behind it was an orchard and grazing cows.

And there are one of these in just about every single village/town (commune) we drove through. Not to mention the large number of military cemeteries, especially in the Verdun area.

Still, their reservists had been mobilized for months. Better training could’ve and should’ve been done. There was also the need for more AA guns and better ones than the wretched 25mm.

What with the look at the no fly list and ham handed attempts to make it fit around protected activities I’m reminded of this Wiki and how SCOTUS upheld a damn mess and Congress finally fixed it later.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedition_Act_of_1918

In June 1918, the Socialist Party figure Eugene V. Debs of Indiana was arrested for violating the Sedition Act by undermining the government’s conscription efforts. He was sentenced to ten years in prison. He served his sentence in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary from April 13, 1919, until December 1921, when President Harding commuted Debs’ sentence to time served, effective on December 25, Christmas Day.[19] In March 1919, President Wilson, at the suggestion of Attorney General Thomas Watt Gregory, released or reduced the sentences of some two hundred prisoners convicted under the Espionage Act or the Sedition Act.[20]
With the act rendered inoperative by the end of hostilities, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer waged a public campaign, not unrelated to his own campaign for the Democratic nomination for president, in favor of a peacetime version of the Sedition Act.[21] He sent a circular outlining his rationale to newspaper editors in January 1919, citing the dangerous foreign-language press and radical attempts to create unrest in African American communities.[22] He testified in favor of such a law in early June 1920. At one point Congress had more than 70 versions of proposed language and amendments for such a bill,[23] but it took no action on the controversial proposal during the campaign year of 1920.[24] After a court decision later in June cited Palmer’s anti-radical campaign for its abuse of power, the conservative Christian Science Monitor found itself unable to support him any more, writing on June 25, 1920: “What appeared to be an excess of radicalism…was certainly met with…an excess of suppression.”[25] The Alien Registration Act of 1940 was the first American peacetime sedition act.[26]
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Sedition Act in Abrams v. United States (1919),[27] although Oliver Wendell Holmes used his dissenting opinion to make a commentary on what has come to be known as “the marketplace of ideas”. Subsequent Supreme Court decisions, such as Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969), make it unlikely that similar legislation would be considered constitutional today.
Congress repealed the Sedition Act on December 13, 1920.[4][28][29]

A blockhouse is a good monument to the blockheaded overreliance on fixed fortifications by France in 1940.

Well, to be scrupulous fair, the Maginot Line DID work, in 1940, exactly as it was supposed to: i.e., deter/deflect a German invasion along its perimeter.

Not that that excuses the French military from that “blockheadedness” award, though: their main problem in 1940 was that they hadn’t seriously thought out the eventual German workaround for the M-Line (a motorized assault through the Ardennes). Hell, even the Germans took a while to come up with that solution - but it worked. Spectacularly. Which in war, is the only metric worth mentioning…

The French were deployed to stop the German breakout from the Ardennes. Everybody knew by 1940 that it was no longer “impassable” The hard part about breaking out of the Ardennes was crossing the Meuse. People keep misunderestimating the failures of the war. It wasn’t appeasement or the Maginot Line or Basically, the French (at the highest levels) panicked.

The group that is supposedly trying to keep Trump from getting the nomination is being led by this delightful former Cruz supporter: Kendal Unruh.

From a comment at TPM (and I looked up the stuff said, and yep, there is a gofundme page for this crap.

Unruh teaches “American Government from a Christian Perspective” at the Jim Elliot Christian School in Englewood, CO. She has a gofundme page where she is trying to raise money to replace the current secular textbooks: they aren’t truthful and don’t allow her to turn out Godly, patriotic, passionate activists possessing Biblical political worldviews. In addition to the textbooks, she will purchase auxiliary reading books, including Glenn Becks’ “Miracles and Massacres”, “Control”, ” Conform”, and “Agenda 21”. Add to this list, the “The American Patriot’s Bible.” We will be doing a lot of studying.

I’m certain these folks will come up with an excellent alternative.

Unruh has found her niche. She has an opportunity to become very rich. Now all she has to do is exploit those who reject the facts of our history. Although it’s sad to say, there are millions who will buy what she’s selling. David Barton has made a fortune selling revised versions of American history with his books and so has Bill O’Reilly. I guess our real history is just too painful for them to deal with, so they have to rewrite it to make it appear that everything has always been perfect in America. My hairdresser sent her grandson to a Christian school for Grades k-2. When the child entered public school last year, he really struggled in almost every subject. Third graders had to take an achievement test in March of this year that would determine whether they would be promoted to the 4th Grade. He’ll go on to the next grade, not because he scored well on the test, but because the state BOE decided not to use the test this year as a measure of whether a child is promoted from 3rd to 4th Grade. He dodged a bullet. My hairdresser and her daughter are now in the process of finding a Christian school he can attend next year. This time they’re considering a Catholic school, which I think is a great choice. The last Christian school he was in enrolled in taught Christian principles more than anything else, and it showed after the child returned to public school. Parents need to choose wisely before enrolling their kids in Christian schools because some of them leave kids unprepared to continue their educational pursuits beyond high school.

It can be better argued that it was a second 100 years war. It started in 1914 and ended with the reunification of Germany. Alliances changed, there were greater and lesser moments of violence and the last half was _mostly_ cold but the conflict that started with the assassination in Sarajevo continued as as each nation rose and fell trying to gain economic ascendency.

re: #203 MsJ

One of the bad things that has occurred since GOPers have attained so much political power has been the corruption of our court systems, federal and state. I say this because I noticed that when DeLay and Perry got into trouble in TX, neither ended up serving any time behind bars due to the political make up of the TX State Supreme Ct. Since there are more GOPers on the court, both avoided answering for their alleged crimes. I also say this because of the way GOPers have behaved since Scalia died. GOPers in the Senate have decided that if they can’t choose the nominee, they won’t act to confirm anyone the president nominates. Some on the right have decided not to take their cases before the Supreme Ct. because Scalia’s no longer on it. They viewed him as a reliable vote in their favor. That tells me a lot about the politicization of our highest court. I have also noticed that the 5th Circuit Ct. of Appeals overwhelmingly votes in favor of GOP policies and laws. It’s depressing knowing that when I see the name of a federal court district, I can accurately determine how its justices ruled on an issue.

According to the Sun, the festival has been beset by abysmal ticket sales and failed to draw much of an audience Friday — even though tickets to see Nugent were slashed from $67 for general admission to $5. The band scheduled to play Saturday cancelled.

Not content with creating a new account to replace the previous one suspended by Twitter, Rage Furby Chuck C. Johnson (the college Award Winning JournalistTM) returned to Twitter today with at least six sockpuppet accounts.

It remains unclear if all were created by Johnson, whose 13th suspension from Twitter was yesterday, however. He has apparently recruited loyal followers to create spoof accounts to bedevil the @support staff at Twitter, like all the slaves saying, “I am Spartacus.”

Johnson’s last “real” account was suspended over Memorial Day weekend in 2015, and he’s been fuming about it ever since. Besides whining incessantly about being cut off from Twitter (for violating its Terms of Service — repeatedly), Johnson has blogged about the coming demise of Twitter and its declining share price, alleged that CEO Jack Dorsey is gay and his boyfriend is activist DeRay McKesson, complained that Twitter is not white enough, and insisted it deliberately stomps on the First Amendment rights of clueless white boys who are too stupid to follow the TOS.

Yet he really really wants to get back on Twitter. Go figure.

By the way - Chuck C. Johnson has been boasting that he got a six-month continuance on his lawsuit against Gawker.

But he’s lying again. The Fresno Court system now has his document online and he got a six-month continuation on the order to SHOW CAUSE why he didn’t show up for the case management conference about his lawsuit. Here’s the document.

re: #206 majii

The Supreme Court has always been political, on some level. Adams’ midnight appointments and Marbury v Madison are early examples. Jackson allegedly saying “Chief Justice Mashall has rendered his decision, now let him enforce it” is another famous one. As was FDR’s court packing scheme.

Given the stakes involved in a Supreme Court decision, it makes sense that lawyers would consider not filing for cert with a vacancy. Every first year law student learns to read the court and prognosticate on how certain cases are likely to come down. Once the Court rules on an issue, it likely will remain precedent for at least a decade, so if there’s some uncertainty, it makes sense big picture to hold off.

Another part of all of this is the fact that the courts tend to be a venue of last resorts on some big political/constitutional issues - like civil rights.

Does this guy have a psychiatrist, and if not, why isn’t his wife looking for one for him and insisting he attend some sessions for treatment? There’s something “off” about Rage Furby. For all of his talk about his high IQ, he comes across as one of the dumbest guys on the planet because he seems to believe some really weird sh*t.

Basically, Chuck has a six-month reprieve from the consequences of his ill-advised Fresno County lawsuit. The defendants in his suit may even file anti-SLAPP suits of their own in the meantime, which would be great.

Wait, when did State start advocating for war? I thought that was Defense’s job?

Nah, not really.

The job of state is to manage international politics. The job of defense is to be ready when politics by other means is required. (yes, I mangled the quote intentionally.)

But seriously, one of the things that always struck me about professional military I met (and a lot of the defense civilians) was that they didn’t advocate to go into action as a rule because of the inevitable cost. When you get down to it, one dead soldier is one too many. Be ready, be ready to do it as smartly and wisely as possible, but hope it doesn’t need done.

I was aware of that, but maybe I should make it clear in the post I did about his legal issues. He deliberately misstated the purpose of that continuance to Betsy Rothstein, who frankly doesn’t seem to be too clear of a thinker herself.

That is not in a fair view an indication of radicalization. To me, irrelevant or maybe even a contrary indication.

Correct, Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam—faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca)—none of which involve anything even remotely radical or violent.

I immediately go back to something I posted around a week ago:

I’m wondering between Cleveland and Philadelphia, which will draw the wrath of the anarchists?
I think Cleveland provides the best opportunity instigate violent reaction from law enforcement.
While Philadelphia probably offers a greater probability of drawing protesters into participation of attempted carnage.

I once asked a friend who was MACV-SOG, how he felt about the complaints re AR15 - M16 problems in the field.

His response, “we didn’t give a shit. We just used what was at hand.”

He may have been helicoptered in & out by a guy who used to work on my car… I had a mechanic down in Arlington (TX) years ago who flew Kingbee H-34s. Guy had a MACV-SOG commendation letter on the wall next to a map of Vietnam on which the capital was not “Ho Chi Minh City”. Imagine an unassuming little 5’4” Vietnamese guy with greasy hands who had stories of pulling special forces off of burning hilltops under fire…

H-34s, M1 Carbines, and guts is all they needed.

As long as there’s an industry devoted to promoting Islamophobia, Americans aren’t going to get over it, at least a significant number of them won’t. I’ve seen numerous tweets & links this month to articles claiming that “pious” Muslims are raping & murdering (non-Muslims) as a form of Ramadan sacrifice/celebration.

This is straight-up blood libel emanating from the bowels of the so called “counter-jihad” hate blogs & organizations being run, supported & funded by people like Geller, Spencer, Horowitz, Pipes, et al.

So nobody wanted to go see Ted Nugent, even at $5 a pop? *
Guess the “free market” delivered its judgement on ol’ Ted…

*overpriced even at that

Nugent (autocorrect made it “Nugget,” which I should have kept) would seem a logical choice for the wealthy Trump-supporting biker gangs going to Laconia: they probably have experience in weekend-warrioring and canned hunts.* It’s a head-scratcher.

*More likely my stereotyping is wrong, to some extent. The bikers I’ve been driving with and through every day are about my age 50ish, but in no way exhibit any badassery. It’s probably a diverse group. And the weather is great right now. Probably rather ride to a decent restaurant and then have a couple of drinks at camp rather than listen to a wannabe has-been.

Or to kill some Supremes before the appeal gets there, Julia Roberts (a first year law student) figures it out, she tells Denzel Washington (a WaPo reporter), and the rest is a Grisham novel turned romantic thriller.

If you haven’t ever heard it, seek out the original version for solo piano rather than the Ravel orchestrated version. Glorious, painfully beautiful music.

If you can find it, the piano performance of the Russian Viktor Krainev is unbelievable.

The Tallis Fantasia is, literally, one of the reasons I’m a classical musician and a composer (even though my style is light years apart from RVW’s).

For an exercise in cognitive dissonance, listen to the Tallis Fantasia (or The Lark Ascending, or the Greensleeves Fantasia, or Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus or any of the other “folky” pieces) and the magnificently brutal 4th Symphony in one sitting. It’s almost impossible to believe they’re by the same composer.
