Here’s a great new song from Peter Gabriel; dare we hope that this means a full album is on the way? It’s been a long time coming.

The new track I’m Amazing is now available on:

iTunes - smarturl.it

Spotify - smarturl.it

Tidal - listen.tidal.com

Google Play - smarturl.it

It’s the first new composition from Peter to be released since the track Show Yourself featured in the film Back to Front – Live in London in 2013.

Peter Gabriel is on my bucket list to see live. Over the last year I have ticked off Billy Idol and Chris Cornell solo; still need to see Willie Nelson, Afghan Whigs, The Police, and Morrissey….among others.

I would LOVE to see The Police. Hell I’d be happy enough to see Sting again.

Speaking of concerts: $400 million Ticketmaster lawsuit culminates in discounts, free tickets for 50 million customers

I just checked my ticketmaster account and I have vouchers for 20 free general admission tickets.

I support the right to keep and bear single shot muskets. Just like the Founding Fathers intended.

I’ve been a gun-owner all my adult life (one shotgun).

I despise this particular argument because it is so easy for the “guns everywhere, all the time” crowd to knock down.

I support the right to keep and own a printing press. Just like the Founding Fathers intended (with the I Amendment)

No radio, Internet, podcasts, &c for you.

That argument is a distraction. A more supportable argument is the Founders didn’t intend any of the listed rights in the Bill of Rights to be absolute (I can’t sacrifice humans under freedom of religion, &c)

Hmmm, I wonder if I have a ticketmaster account. I have always hated them, since the days in high school when I’d have to go to the wherehouse on Saturday mornings and hope 1) that there weren’t enough people to trigger wristbands and 2) that whatever I was trying to get didn’t sell out in five minutes.

The internets tell me this Peter Gabriel song was written (partly) about Muhammad Ali a few years ago and Gabriel decided to release it now as a homage.

End of conservative Supreme Court: Clarence Thomas may be next to leave

Justice Clarence Thomas, a reliable conservative vote on the Supreme Court, is mulling retirement after the presidential election, according to court watchers.

Thomas, appointed by former President George H.W. Bush and approved by the Senate after a bitter confirmation, has been considering retirement for a while and never planned to stay until he died, they said. He likes to spend summers in his RV with his wife.

I am starting to think it’s drawn out like this not just to make a lot of money for media outlets, but to just completely baffle and depress people to the point they don’t show up to vote. Well, I suppose I have to throw some stuff on the grill and make The Husband’s Father’s Day Food Extravaganza. Found some steaks marked down and with some grilled baby potatoes, some salad and rolls with a peanut butter cup pie for dessert, I think we’re good. Have fun and keep cool Lizards.

Trump is largely outsourcing what’s typically called a campaign’s ground game, which includes the labor-intensive jobs of identifying and contacting potential supporters. Ed Brookover, recently tapped to serve as the Trump’s liaison to the RNC, says the campaign is making progress on adding its own staff in key states.

The campaign estimates it currently has about 30 paid staff on the ground across the country.

Fareed Zakaria of CNN called out Republicans for not taking a position on Donald Trump, including former cabinet post holders such as Condoleeza Rice and George Schultz.

“We now know who Donald Trump is. But what is the Republican Party? Most Republican leaders still hold out hope that despite the fact that Trump is, in George Will’s accurate description, the most anti-conservative presidential aspirant in their party’s history, he will suddenly get religion and embrace their agenda,” he said.

“They believe that a 70-year-old megalomaniac, whose entire life has been devoted to ceaselessly promoting himself, and using any means to tear down others, would suddenly develop deep empathy for the party, though so far, he has used it solely as a vehicle for his own personal advancement,” Zakaria continued.

Your party is filled with homophobes assholes who hate gay people. What are you doing to change that? More importantly, what has your party done to change that?

Gays are second class citizens in your party. Very few in your party even support SSM. Many others in your party still oppose any anti-discrimination laws, even with respect to housing and employment. Your party operates largely on racist and anti-gay dog whistles. Own it. Don’t project it.

Dark needs this to be about terrorism because he’s not ready to deal with the concept that hating gay people always leads to this kind of behavior, regardless of which Abusive Sky Dad you listen to.

Because Dark desperately wants to triangulate and make this about foreign ideology because that would be easy and comfortable, and so that we won’t notice that no matter what he says, he votes for people who hate the queers.

Otherwise he might have to think about Ted fucking Cruz and Ron Kevin Swanson (or whatever the name of the “kill the gays pastor” was, that Creepy Ted went on stage with), and their backup band of nutbags who just can’t pretend they’re not fucking gleeful over dead gays shot by a brown person.

In one video, the elder Mateen expresses gratitude toward the Afghan Taliban while denouncing the Pakistani government.

“Our brothers in Waziristan, our warrior brothers in [the] Taliban movement and national Afghan Taliban are rising up,” he said. “Inshallah, the Durand Line issue will be solved soon.”

The “Durand Line issue” is a historically significant one, particularly for members of the Pashtun ethnic group, whose homeland straddles the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Durand Line is that border. It is not clear whether the Mateens are Pashtun. The Afghan Taliban is mostly made up of Pashtuns.

Morgan Freeman’s thing can be played into that. That’s what I saw D_F doing.

He hated gay people, I’m certain of that. I was just echoing Morgan Freeman in saying I don’t think ‘homophobia’ is that right word to describe the motive of someone who would do this sort of thing. His actions seem more aggressive than ‘phobic’.

The most recent video on Mateen’s YouTube channel shows him declaring his candidacy for the Afghan presidency. The timing of the video is strange, as it came a year after presidential elections were held in Afghanistan.

Mateen appears incoherent at times in the video, and he jumps abruptly from topic to topic. His use of Dari, instead of Pashto, the language of Pashtuns, was another strange element of his presentation, given that he is discussing issues of Pashtun nationalism.

“People would make jokes of this guy, especially after videos surfaced of him claiming to be the president in exile,” said one senior Afghan government official, who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to media. “He looked very serious, but no one could tell what he was talking about.”

Otherwise he might have to think about Ted fucking Cruz and Ron Swanson (or whatever the name of the “kill the gays pastor” was, that Creepy Ted went on stage with), and their backup band of nutbags who just can’t pretend they’re not fucking gleeful over dead gays shot by a brown person.

Yup, the topic is Republicans want a religious war, so they have to paint the Orlando mass-murder as a terror attack inspired by Islam, rather than a terror attack inspired by anti-gay hatred. (They can’t adopt the latter position, because that is their position.)

Therefore all the derp that came out: He had a gay dating app on his phone (the FBI said no). He was gay (his father said he was offended by two men kissing in Miami). It does work very well indeed. The terrorist who carried out the massacre was not afraid, he was trying to instill fear in others. His actions were deliberate and done in the service of a strain of totalitarianism. That is not the action of someone suffering from a phobia.

You’re pulling your usual pedantic, ignorant-as-all-fuck act. There’s literally nothing about trying to instill fear in others that disproves fear as a motive for doing so. Self hatred born of one’s own fear of their own homosexuality has often been externalized into aggression and overt hostility towards gay people who choose to live openly.

re: #130 Nyet

He also says that God will punish homosexuals. Here are the possible roots of the son’s religious homophobia.

There’s also the social middle ground between abstract ideology and personal belief that we tend not to engage with. The doctrine plays out as a series of familial and social consequences—shame, punishment, shunning, and the threat thereof. Divinity is just the immovable object referenced to justify a much smaller, crueler process of using social bonds as leverage for compliance.

It’s not an argument I’d make about every “thou shall not” set up by ultra-conservative religion, but in the case of anti-gay sentiments, they play out the same regardless of the theoretical, spiritual basis, because what is actually being policed is more basic social behavior: the performance of norms of sexuality and the performance of norms of gender.

And that’s important right now, since we have people trying some kind of bait and switch where they want to talk about a terrible act of violence, and attribute it to a grand ideological structure, but avoid the point of liason that is the actual operational logic of why the ideology would prompt the crime…

…because they use the same operational logic.

Honestly, I wish I didn’t have to write this shit. I hate radical Islam; it is literally something that has burdened my life and the safety of my family since I was six months old. But what I’m watching is people fail to engage with what makes it radical, and thus awful, and substitute some kind of smoke-and-mirrors thing where the badness does not come from identifiable patterns of behavior and justification (that can be seen elsewhere, and be problems elsewhere), but some kind of numinous evil.

People saying, “well when Muslims act out these ideas, they’re bad, but don’t pause to consider that we use the same ideas” should not be trusted to fix the fucking problem. They’re selling something shoddy.

His act was pure shock and awe, his 911 call was part of maximizing his final act on earth, which was killing as many people at a gay bar as he could in the shortest amount of time. There’s no sinister international cabal of Islamists that were in communicado with Mateen. This was the act one man and one man only and he wasn’t thinking politics when he started killing people.

That, and he drove about one hundred miles to go to this specific place. He passed numerous public places that he could have done equal damage, along with government offices and such (terrorists are big on hitting governmental centres of power).

Instead, he chose this specific bar over a number of bars and other businesses in the area, after what my uneducated mind would count as casing the joint in previous visits.

The Orlando Police and FBI need some time to sift through all the evidence they have; in the meantime it is irresponsible not to speculate (especially the news media).

re: #242 SteveMcGaziBolaGate RN

No, it’s there to increase the brisance effect. Basically low order explosive powders don’t have much shattering ability on their own, set off a paper bag full of traditional black powder on a stump and it will just scorch the outside, because it doesn’t “explode” so much as burn or “deflagrate” quickly. They need to be encased so that the deflagration is contained for a little bit, which vastly increases the pressure. That’s why you can use a comparatively small amount of black powder to blow up a rock or stump by drilling deep in, laying a fuse and packing everything in super tight. Unlike high explosives low order explosives are all about giving the reaction nowhere to go until it exceeds the structural rating of its container.

No, it’s there to increase the brisance effect.

Hence the classic homebrew pipe bomb. There’s a careful calculation to be made between the strength of the casing versus the maximum pressure before it yields coupled with the increase in temperature and resulting increase in the explosive shockwave’s velocity and energy. It’s all dependent on the speed of sound which only increases with temperature, not pressure.

There are basically four forms of burning — oxidation (rust or corrosion) which takes minutes or longer, combustion which occurs in seconds, explosion (in a gas or powder) which takes milliseconds and detonation (in a solid) which happens in microseconds. C4, Semtex and the other plastiques are a lot sharper with a greater brisance or tearing effect since they detonate with the speed of sound being a lot faster than a looser aggregate like gunpowder or dynamite or ANFO.

It took me about forty-five minutes to download it through my not-so-fast DSL connexion.

That said, Windows 10 depends a lot on apps you buy from Microsoft, and privacy settings are defaulted to “tell the world everything about me.” In fact, there is one setting that if you do not change it, it will use your wireless connexion (if you have one) to allow others to download it through your computer (so Microsoft doesn’t have to pay for additional throughput).

Those privacy settings and instructions on how to protect your computer can be found here:

I want it to be Sarah Palin. Or better yet, since he seems to have a penchant for daughters, Bristol Palin.

I’m hoping for pretty boy, Scott Brown, as I mentioned, mostly because he’s as much of an empty suit as Trump, and because it would be a nice gift for Elizabeth Warren. (And it could mark THREE times Scottie has been beaten by a GIRL!!)

Hey—Scott has a daughter who was on American Idol and a broadcast wife, so he’d be right up Trump’s alley. And, he’s the kind of obsequious phony who would kiss Trump’s ass. The only downside is, he’s better looking than Trump (who isn’t, really) and that might be a problem.

I seared last since I wanted to smoke first. This way the smoke penetrated along with the flavor of the rub (that flavor went all the way through) and the sear at the end was more to seal the juices while it rested. Did it about 2 minutes per side. I’ve done steaks this way as well, just smoke at 250 for 20 minutes or so then sear a couple minutes per side.

Many years ago in Illinois I was at work at the newspaper office when a tornado warning issued, so I ran out to the car to get my photo equipment. Hail arrived as I was running back to the office. I got hit on the head by several quarter-sized hailstones.
They definitely left a mark. And I have a serious respect now for hail of any size.

(The tornado that resulted from that warning took out Plainfield High School in the northern part of the county.)
