I feel sorry for that kid for having a father who chose to exploit her to satisfy his buddy’s political agenda.

Like many plaintiffs in landmark cases, Fisher was sought out by an activist who wanted to bring a case like hers all the way to the Supreme Court. In her case, it was Edward Blum, whose legal defense fund, the Project on Fair Representation, has challenged multiple race-related policies.

Blum, a former stockbroker, has forged a second career steering cases like Fisher’s to the courtroom. As Reuters reported in 2012, Blum had sought a plaintiff to challenge the University of Texas’ use of affirmative action after the makeup of the Supreme Court shifted to the right under former President George W. Bush. He spent years searching for the right student, even setting up a website to recruit potential plaintiffs. However, Blum struggled to find a student he felt could stand up to the scrutiny the case would bring.

Eventually, Blum received a call from an old acquaintance — Abigail Fisher’s father, Richard. After hearing about her story and deciding she had the right temperament for being in the public eye, Blum persuaded the Fishers to file suit, and recruited lawyers to represent them. The Fishers’ legal fees, according to Reuters, have been paid by Blum’s conservative backers.

Well, it’s not quite as horrible as all that. But sometimes it grates horribly. For instance, D_F often begins a comment with “Quite concur.” It’s like a tattoo on his forehead saying, “Twit here.”

Christ, I was at an isolated island resort once when a fellow vacationer managed to shoot himself in the hand in an archery activity. Everyone was in a panic about bleeding, the need for stitches, and so on, when I, a medical layman, said that in the particular circumstances, infection was the main risk and we should get some alcohol or other antiseptic on the wound. A guy who turned out to be a doctor looked at me and said simply, “Concur.” No damned “Quite” needed.

That’s true. And honestly the people never really chose to be part of England in the first place. The Welsh have been with England for much longer so it makes more sense to me that they’re voting along with the English on this. Welsh nationalism I don’t think has ever been as strong as Irish or Scots Nationalism in modern times either.

No matter what you make of the following tweet, it demonstrates how a former aspiring male model with a GED can be seriously impressed with himself:

You all are pretty rough on Mr. Snowden. I did not agree with the way he dumped everything out there, but I see why he was upset at what was going on. Still angry at him not caring until Obama was elected and running off thinking he’d be sitting on a beach in paradise but better late than never. America needed to know what was going on to their own citizens by the government, all that other stuff about foreign leaders was not needed though. He just needs to come home and stand up for himself in a courtroom.

Apparently she threatened to jump off a bridge somewhere in Chicago.

As a resident of Chicagoland, I have had it with this situation. It was sad when we were told to keep a look out for her because she was missing and presumed a danger to herself. Now that she is apparently on the loose and possibly a menace to public safety, fun time is over. Time to treat her just like any unstable person who could well be a danger to herself and others and get her supervision until this is no longer the case.

I love my GED success story. I get pissed when people diss the GED.

I am guilty of this argument sometimes, but in my defense, the massive amount of misinformation by people who know nothing about the subjects they debate online has burned me out. I’ve been on the internet since the early 1990’s and see the decline in educated debate. Reading people discuss economics or any complicated subject like they’ve ever taken a course or even read books on the subject (I am all for self-education) when they clearly have not, really irks me.

This has colored my perception of the Snowden case. Having the stolen classified material almost certainly falling into the hands of Russian and Chinese intelligence doesn’t help.

But it has to be more than London and Scotland to keep the UK in.

God, I know it. My big goal out of college was to take the foreign service officer exam. I did take it but I realized that I was never going to pass it (not a matter of knowledge) but more so realizing that I didn’t have the skillset they want.

My biggest dream was Harvard. I was going to go to Northwestern then off to Harvard.bit was planned. I knew what I was going to do!

I made an appointment with a NW advisor and two things turned me off for good:

1) the very first thing she asked me was how I was going to pay for it (I had a full ride from my then employer). She didn’t give the first shit about me or what I wanted. And,

Donald has the most insane non-disparagement contract this side of the Church of Scientology, and he wants to apply it to federal employees.

While wingnuts are shrieking about the 2nd Amendment they completely forget about the First.

“When people are chosen by a man to go into government at high levels, and then they leave government and they write a book about a man and say a lot of things that were really guarded and personal, I don’t like that,” Trump said.

But he has no problem with “tell all” gossip books when they are about the Clintons.

Didn’t she have the chance to be able to transfer to UT after a couple years at a community college or something like that? I didn’t go to a four year school out of high school myself but I worked hard at a community college and got in via the transfer route.

She was told to go to another school for a year, make better grades and she could have a sophomore admission. But no, she had to be a whiny white girl and make a federal case out of it.

Personally, I’d like to yell at #BeckyWithTheBadGrades. I also went to UT (class of 1984), I was a sophomore acceptance (there was no way I was getting in based on my high school grades, and that was before UT went to its top 10 percent acceptance metric). Frankly, I’d tell her, you dingbat, you were used. You didn’t want a UT education, you wanted to rip down the attempt UT is trying to make to rectify a great historical wrong. GO AWAY.

And how much time have I spent talking with D_F? We’ve exchanged a few comments. But over the years I’ve read literally thousands of his, and I think that allows me to have an opinion. Now I remember why it’s been a couple of years since I’ve had Hooters wings. They suck. Next time I’m getting store bought wings, it will be back to my old stand-by, B-Dub. Their wings ROCK.

That’s all.

- any female Lizard of childbearing years who needs/wants an abortion
- any gay or lesbian Lizards who want to marry their spouse

This is looking only at potential direct effects, based on stated Republican policy positions, where there is a direct threat to the life, health, or emotional well-being of people in this community. This is leaving aside the multitude of indirect harms that would come as a result of the racism and bigotry that the Republican party has embraced. Just the list off the top of my head.

Eric The Fruit Bat  Jun 23, 2016 • 7:43:57pm

If Britain votes to leave, it will face three options for exiting the EU. It will also have to embark on two sets of negotiations.

One of the most remarkable things about this referendum campaign has been the dearth of discussion on the various alternatives to EU membership. In Brussels and other EU capitals, decision-makers are drawing up contingency plans for a British vote to leave. Views are emerging on the options to present to the UK, and on the process it would have to follow.

If Leave wins, Britain’s partners are likely to offer just three options: the Norwegian model of the European Economic Area (EEA); the Canadian model of a free trade agreement (FTA); and the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The EU doesn’t want to give the UK bilateral treaties, like Switzerland has, since it regards the ‘Swiss model’ as broken (the Swiss voted against free movement for EU workers in a referendum in 2014, and may therefore lose access to the single market). Nor will it offer the ‘Turkish model’, whereby Britain would stay in the customs union and have to adopt the EU’s external tariffs (EU leaders assume the UK would not want this model, which would deprive the British of the freedom to negotiate their own trade deals).

Dude, you don’t have to like the IRA to be sympathetic with that cause. Read about the SDLP. They’re good people. When I stopped seeing every Unionist as Ian Paisley incarnate, it helped me view the issue better. I am still sympathetic to them joining the Republic of Ireland since I don’t like how Ireland and Scotland (which is why I was sympathetic towards the Scots) a couple years ago were incorporated into what we know as the UK but you can be sympathetic towards Irish nationalism without liking the IRA.

Abortion does need to change in Ireland, I agree. As for the Protestants, that’s gotten better. Remember the country overwhelmingly approved SSM just last summer. I expect Ireland to be more socially liberal on abortion very soon. The church has lost a lot of its grip on society.

Quite honestly the history of Protestants and Catholics in Ireland is a lot of shitty stuff by both sides. I hate to MBF something that I never lived through but there was a lot of bad shit done to Irish Catholics for years by the Protestant elite that inspired a strong dislike of the Protestants by the Irish Catholic majority. Not suggesting that I believe persecuting based off religion is right but after reading about things like the Penal Laws and how the Famine was handled by the Protestant elite of the UK. Okay, I’ll shut up now. I’m an American whose family hasn’t lived in Ireland since the 1850’s.

Yeah, and many think we are too smart to put Trump in office. I’m not so sure.

That’s another thing RWC. He started out to his credit while still quite conservative anti-Trump but now he’s starting to get sympathetic towards him. Agh. I love the guy like a brother I really do. He’s probably my only friend I can say that about since we’ve known each other for so long but it just frustrates me to see him, a guy who’s done very well for himself post hateful shit.

I don’t know about Irish immigration in general but I did have a nice talk with an African immigrant to Ireland cabby when I was there the first time. It was Obama’s first year. He noticed I was American and was eager to hear my thoughts on the man. I admit I have a soft spot for the Irish people especially due to my roots and experiences with the people there both as a tourist, student, and now researching my family there but I think they really are among the most generous people in Europe. Still have my Nana’s surname familiy history that a nice old man that had a surname history kiosk gave to me for free. I’ve never forgotten that.

This is a disaster for Cameron. He’s toast either way. If the vote goes Remain, he will lead a fractured party and lose the PM position to (What? A coalition of Labor and the Lib Dems?). If the vote goes Leave, he loses control of his own party and Boris Johnson (total sleazebag) will be PM. For bonus points, if it’s Leave, Scotland and quite possibly Northern Ireland will leave the UK and stay with the EU.

I think this is in a way even more surreal since when the USSR broke up, there were some people granted quite old who remembered life before 1917. The UK has been a thing since 1800. The bolded so much. I’m very passionate about my beliefs. I really am but my friends and other loved ones are that much more important to me. I really can’t imagine refusing to be friends with someone over political disagreements even with a monster like Trump is.

I’m watching the Pound melt down on the yahoo finance page, and it has smashed through $1.35

Yup, just as I was posting that, looks like the floor gave way.

Must have been the call by the BBC which gave impetus.

Granted we don’t know if the UK will fall apart but with how Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland voted heavily to remain, this will definitely be a test. Honestly as someone admittingly sympathetic to the causes of both Scottish and Irish nationalism, I sort of welcome that opportunity for those countries but at the same time I hate seeing a nation like the UK fall for the worst of right wign populism.

Me too. Jimmah and Ice are part of why I went from ambivalent on the Scottish question a couple years ago to very sympathetic to Aye. I’ve always been sympathetic on the Irish question since that was something I was more familiar with but I was ignorant on the Scottish one.

Doesn’t he by his own admission have sort of a crush on Trump?

Boris and Donald have a lot in common. Both were born on third base and were raised to believe that they were so talented that they hit a triple to deep left center field on leaving the womb. Both have disastrous hair, and both are functioning sociopaths in the limited social clique in which they exist. Most importantly, both are very, very dangerous men if they acquire control of a western government. It simply cannot be allowed to happen.

I haven’t even made it to the end because all of my listening segments have been too short and the start is so good I listen to it every time from the beginning so yes.

I’m sure I’ll get sick of it eventually.

I don’t think you will. When you get to “It’s Quiet Uptown,” be sure you have a hankie ready.

Argentina is in a universe of hurt.

Well, but as I recall, that was the case the last time they invaded.
