Suspected car bomb detonated outside Perth mosque as hundreds pray inside

No one injured in attack, which included anti-Islamic graffiti being sprayed on the fence outside the mosque in Thornlie in Perth’s southern suburbs

Nothing like Istanbul then but it may only be dumb luck that it wasn’t.

So, Reuters runs an article that concludes with this:

Climate policies will not strand oil and gas reserves: Kemp

[…]

The most realistic scenario is that fossil fuel consumption seems set to continue increasing through at least 2030 and probably 2040, which makes the debate over “stranded assets” misleading.

If this indeed is what comes to pass, then there is simply no mitigation against the more serious scenarios of climate change.

Not a problem. The extraction industry will make lots of money by exploiting all available fossil fuel reserves. // infinite

I’m so annoyed with people demanding a trendy hashtag or a flag filter in the wake of Istanbul and bringing up Paris as an example.

Honestly, WTF does that do? The people advocating this are more concerned with settling scores with Westerners on that than they are over the concerns of dead civilians.

Belafon  Jun 28, 2016 • 5:29:15pm

I read through this, Bernie Sanders just gave an amazingly condescending interview about Hillary Clinton and Chris Cillizza could not keep his contempt for Sanders at bay:

Again, the belief undergirding Sanders’s comments is that he alone — and, therefore, not Clinton — is the person who can bring transformational change to end the “decline of the American middle class.” That Clinton is either insufficiently committed to doing so or simply incapable of bringing that sort of change about. That she sees politics as “a baseball game of winners and losers” while he sees it as “protect[ing] the needs of millions of people in this country who are hurting.”

The contrast is remarkable: Sanders as white knight operating from conviction and righteousness, Clinton as craven politician doing and saying whatever it takes to win.

This is a good example of how a true-believer white-knight can be so blind to items outside the target of their own crusade.

Sanders may be quite earnest about helping the “millions of people” but American politics is about how, in nearly impossible stalemates, to work out compromises for 320 million people.

FDR was was an elitist but he still did a whole lot of good for the suffering masses, because he was skilled in that nasty thing called politics and “winning and losing”.

That BBC link gives the latest in a cut-n-dried fashion:

David Cameron declares that “Britain will be leaving the European Union but will not be turning our backs on Europe” as he attends his final EU summit in Brussels

A motion of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn has been passed by the party’s MPs - but the Labour leader says he will not resign

The European Parliament’s first debate on the UK’s vote to leave has been marked by bitter exchanges

The new leader of the Conservatives should be in place by 9 September, a week later than initially mooted

Tax rises and spending cuts will be needed to deal with the “shock” to the UK economy caused by leaving the EU, Chancellor George Osborne has said

Nicola Sturgeon addressed the Scottish Parliament and has set up an expert group to advise on the aftermath of the Brexit vote

What a mess.

This is what revanchism has wrought.

And it will get worse if thoughtful leaders don’t rise to the top and steer the mess.

That BBC link gives the latest in a cut-n-dried fashion:

Corbyn is the British Bernie Sanders, elected on a hard-left platform by party members and people willing to pay 3 pounds for the privilege, combining the worst aspects of our caucuses (tiny turnout dominated by people with extreme positions) and open primaries (deliberate interference by in other parties who hold extreme positions and those who want to see Labour fail). Under Corbyn, Labour soared to its worst finish in Scotland in more than a century and became the first opposition party to lose seats in local elections in more than 30 years. He declared for Remain in the referendum, but his heart just wasn’t in it, and close to 40% of Labour members voted to Leave (perhaps a majority outside of London).

And thanks to a poorly written party constitution, there may not be a way to get rid of him. Candidates challenging an incumbent party leader need 50 MPs to qualify for the ballot… but the incumbent might not need them at all, and all the same whackadoos who voted for him once are likely to do so again.

Congressmen, notably Republican congress-folk, and their denials:

Voters ask Rep. Todd Rokita about gun control, climate change

Bogan, who held up placards during the ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence, later demanded, “What proof (of man-made climate change) do you require?”

Rokita replied, “I see more science coming out that ocean currents have tremendous amount more to do with the changing of our climate than anything humans produce.”

Bogan pushed the issue, asking, “When will you believe it?”

“When I have actual scientific proof … instead of liberal opinion,” Rokita said.

When I started my nursing job I was bemused by the quantity and quality of the profanity my coworkers use. Last week I met an ID doc who was filling in for the regular guy on vacation. She went into a difficult (as in PIA) patient’s room to try to convince her to continue the course of antibiotics. I was curious to see what she could say that I didn’t think of so I lurked. This lady tried everything. She was calm, reasonable and persistent but without any luck. So I tailed off towards the nurse’s station to keep an eye on things when I heard her ask Is Mrs. XXX your patient? I didn’t even get a chance to answer when she unleashed a magnificent profanity laden tirade that drew from every fiber of her being, including references to her grandparents back in Malaysia, Bernie Madoff, Donald Trump and way more than the seven bad words you used to be unable to say on tv. All I could tell her was that the fact she says she’s allergic to Benedryl and steroids should have been a warning. The patient tells us she can’t wait to go home. She tells the docs that she has chest pain and shortness of breath.

Painting a picture, Trump told the few-thousand gathered in the Ohio University Eastern gymnasium that “they eat dinner like us. Can you imagine them sitting around the table or wherever they’re eating their dinner, talking about the Americans don’t do waterboarding and yet we chop off heads? Nigel Farage backs Donald Trump: ‘There is nothing on Earth that could persuade me ever to vote for Hillary Clinton’

Speaking to CNN from Brussels, UKIP leader Mr Farage praised Mr Trump but said he had “far bigger problems” than that of his counterpart.

The publisher probably went to price how much insurance would cost against lawsuits and said “No Thank You”. That’s what blew up Ventura’s case-when his attorney mentioned that insurance would cover the judgement that was grounds for the whole lawsuit to get tossed.

Sanders could have connected the dots in some useful manner. E.g., by arguing that the globalized economy has created a chronic oversupply of labor everywhere, creating widespread economic hardship which is then exploited by the likes of Trump and the European fascists.

I went to a Christmas Eve mass and the Priest spent a good part of the sermon whining about that. I just felt like saying dude really? I mean I’m sorry but the Happy Holidays whining should actually offend Christians given the fact that there are places around the world where Christians are actually persecuted.

A confession: When watching Happy Valley (set in Yorkshire), Mrs. FBW and I turned on the subtitles. It REALLY helped.

Last week we watched Hinterland, we didn’t need them. The Welsh spoke much more clearly.

Chinese TV shows always have Chinese subs, because of the diversity of languages here. Nearly everyone shares the same characters, but pronounce them in very different ways.

Occasionally, you’ll see subs on American news and documentary programs, when a regional accent is so thick the director thinks subs will help the audience understand what was said.

I’m not surprised, since they are usually produced by different teams.

True facts: American and British TV shows and movies are usually available online in China, with subtitles, within hours of their domestic showing. The subs are created by widely dispersed teams of young people who crowd-translate the dialog. Often, the subtitles in Chinese make no real sense, especially when it comes to English idioms, jokes and pop culture references. I caution my students not to read the subs, but to listen to the English dialog, if they want to improve their comprehension.

Maybe this is the end of the modern Olympics.

Rio de Janeiro State is in bad shape, economically, and it’s had trouble paying cops, firefighters and doctors. Rio de Janeiro City is better off, so venues within the city limits should be OK. But a rail line that’s supposed to connect the city with a venue outside the city limits is not yet completed, because RdJ State can’t pay for it.

I’m optimistic that Rio City will manage to pull this Olympics off, but I’m not confident that the state and national governments will be ready to handle the influx of international visitors.

Bernie Blew It

Elizabeth Warren is the surrogate he was supposed to be. His supporters have become Clinton’s. How Sanders overplayed his hand.

Maybe this was inevitable. Maybe Sanders was never going to have the full stamp he clamored for simply on account of having lost. But this underplays the initial strength of his hand. Had Sanders endorsed Clinton at the end of the primaries and recalibrated as an advocate for her campaign—in short, had he mimicked Warren—he would have gotten ahead of his voters. This is important. With an early concession and endorsement, Sanders does two things: He pre-empts any natural movement to Clinton among Democratic primary voters, which lets him claim credit for her improved numbers even if they were inevitable. Like Warren, he would take a starring role in the campaign against Trump. And as we saw in 2008 between Obama and Clinton, a partnership can open the doors to lasting influence.

As it stands, the Vermont senator has almost vanished from the news cycle, overshadowed by Clinton’s growing lead, overall Democratic unity, global events, and the never-ending emissions of Donald Trump. He’ll still matter to the shape and direction of the Democratic National Convention, but he could have had a larger, more visible role. Bernie Sanders had his shot, and he threw it away.
