Ambassador Stevens’s Family: Hillary Clinton Is Not to Blame for Benghazi

Another classic Donald Trump face plant
Politics • Views: 69,665

A few days ago, Donald Trump tweeted this attack on Hillary Clinton:

OK, so let’s do that; what does Ambassador Stevens’ family really think about Hillary Clinton’s responsibility in the Benghazi attack? Here are the words of his sister, Dr. Anne Stevens:

Dr. Anne Stevens, the sister of Ambassador Chris Stevens, has served as a family spokesperson since his death. She is the chief of pediatric rheumatology at Seattle Children’s Hospital. We spoke twice in the past three days, including shortly after the House Select Committee report was issued. Dr. Stevens recalled that her brother had been fascinated by the Middle East since childhood, when he dressed up as Lawrence of Arabia, with a towel and a pot atop his head. He served in the Peace Corps, in Morocco, before joining the Foreign Service, and he served twice in Libya before his final posting there, as well as in Damascus, Cairo, Jerusalem, and Riyadh.

[…]

What did you learn from the two new reports by House Republicans and Democrats?

It doesn’t look like anything new. They concluded that the U.S. compound in Benghazi was not secure. We knew that.

What did you think of Secretary Clinton’s conduct on Benghazi?

She has taken full responsibility, being head of the State Department, for what occurred. She took measures to respond to the review board’s recommendations. She established programs for a better security system. But it is never going to be perfect. Part of being a diplomat is being out in the community. We all recognize that there’s a risk in serving in a dangerous environment. Chris thought that was very important, and he probably would have done it again. I don’t see any usefulness in continuing to criticize her. It is very unjust.

After years of congressional investigations, do you feel that your brother’s death has been politicized in Washington?

Yes! Definitely politicized. Every report I read that mentions him specifically has a political bent, an accusatory bent. One point that seems to be brought up again and again is the accusation that the attack was a response to the video. I could understand why that conclusion would be made, because it was right after the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Egypt. But, frankly, it doesn’t matter that that was the thinking, that night, about why the attack occurred. It’s irrelevant to bring that up again and again. It is done purely for political reasons.

It would be much more useful for Congress to focus on providing resources for security for all State Department facilities around the world—for increasing personnel, language capabilities, for increasing staff to build relationships, particularly in North Africa and the Middle East. I would love to hear they are drastically increasing the budget.

But this will not stop the vested political interests from continually trying to make hay off the corpses.

Headline writers all day have been trying to spin the final Benghazi report into what they want.

E.g., TheHill, not a neutral source of political information, declares:

Benghazi panel faults Clinton

Technically correct, but the headline misses the real substance, which even TheHill had to put into their story:

Yet the report appeared to contain no “smoking gun” showing gross negligence on the part of Clinton or other officials before or after the attacks.

Benghazi is pretty much a litmus test for partisan hackery. There is no reasonably objective take on this to keep hammering Clinton or Obama on it.

Any news source clickbaiting it is Horse Racing it or just being partisan.

If the pages were not immediately encased in plastic bags after being handled by Malik Obama *only*, they’d be useless as evidence. Exposure to sunlight would also degrade any DNA left on the surfaces. You could watch CSI/NCIS shows and learn these basic facts.

Also, those gloves don’t look like sterile latex medical gloves, but the kind of cheap plastic kind you get at Home Depot.

I really wish this freaking bullshit would stop. Aren’t there any checks or balances on how many fucking times a committee can go over the same information and come up with nothing new?

I don’t think this much time and bullshit went into investigating 9/11, fraud and waste in Iraq and Afganistan (remember those shittily built showers that were shocking the troops because of faulty wiring?), the number of soldier suicides, or a whole host of actual REAL FUCKING SCANDALS OR ACTUAL PROBLEMS. They aren’t fiscally responsible, hell, they aren’t even as responsible as most of the children I know. This is enough already.

And they whine and bitch because some poor people get help TO EAT, but they don’t give one shit about wiping their asses with SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS to investigate something that is already been settled, and most likely (if the Republicans don’t cut the funding to do the job) will be remedied as much as possible with security upgrades.

Oh, and didn’t it come out awhile ago that Trey Gowdy changed some of the info in the CIA reports to make Hillary Clinton look bad? If that is true than why in the hell is this shit even allowed to continue? Even without it, aren’t there any damned rules and proceedures that apply here?

Father, son charged with murder in killing of UTA worker

KEMMERER, Wyo. — A father and son who had been called “persons of interest” in the death of a Utah Transit Authority worker were officially charged with murder Tuesday in Wyoming.

Dereck James “DJ” Harrison, 22, of Centerville, and his father, Flint Wayne Harrison, 51, of Pinedale, Wyoming, were each charged with murder in the first degree in the killing of Kay Porter Ricks, 63, of American Fork. Ricks’ body was found in a remote area about 16 miles south of Kemmerer on May 17.

The charges carry a potential death sentence in Wyoming.

The 14-page affidavit filed for each defendant in the Circuit Court of the 3rd Judicial Court in Lincoln County, graphically outlines a brutal death caused over an 18-minute period that included Ricks’ face being smashed with a blunt force object to the point he was no longer recognizable and his neck slashed three times before he was dumped under a sagebrush and left to die.

That goes with the territory. Contractors love war and making money. They fit right in with the modern GOP. If anyone is to blame for the events of Benghazi it should be CIA and their lack of securing the area, relying on local warlords for support rather than professionals. There were not enough CIA guarding the compound and especially not enough for an ambassador visiting. I recall talk of the ambassador wanting to go in low key, ignoring requests for more security or to wait because of the volatile situation, and that could have played a part in CIA not having enough people ready. He really loved his job and did not think about the risks he was taking. It was a tragedy and only luck and more money for more support will prevent any future attacks.

Shooting at Arizona courthouse claims 2 women

Two women were killed and suspect was taken into custody Tuesday evening following a shooting outside a courthouse in eastern Arizona, authorities said.

[…]

Authorities said the shooting appears to have been prompted by a dispute that stemmed from a custody hearing earlier in the day. Investigators did not immediately release any details about the hearing or the dispute.

re: #6 Frankie Five Angels

Gowdy and his GOP buddies knew before they began the investigation that they wouldn’t find anything they could act on in the House against HRC. I remember a couple years ago when Boehner was Speaker that the Heritage Foundation told republicans not to attempt to pass legislation but to launch a series of “investigations,” which is exactly what they’ve done. If republicans in the House knew they had info they could have used to impeach HRC when she was Sec. of State, nothing would have prevented them from doing so. They’d have done it before a bank of cameras with huge smiles on their faces. They couldn’t do it because there was no there there. If they had attempted to impeach her, it’s very likely the public would have discovered that they had deliberately cut the security budget for our embassies and consulates, and they couldn’t have that happen. I remember reading that the president had requested additional funding for security at our installations, but republicans refused to do it because it was him who was asking for it. I also remember reading that then-Sec. of State HRC asked Congress to shift some of the State Dept.’s funding to provide extra security at embassies and consulates, and because they had the majority in Congress, they refused to do that, too. All of their actions were focused on making Obama fail. They didn’t give a d*mn whether our State Dept. members had adequate security overseas or not. They said they did on TV, but their actions showed the opposite. They are some underhanded, lying, divisive, hateful, party-first jack*sses, but I’m not saying anything about them that they don’t already know. What is happening to the GOP in regard to Trump is what they deserve. They worked very hard to bring about the rise of someone like Trump, and now they’re running away from him as fast as they can. Running away from him isn’t doing them much good because they’re tainted with his stench and it follows them wherever they go.

The Pogroms, the Crusades, etc. It really is amazing how Christians totally want to whitewash their history of Antisemitism and blame all Antisemitism on Muslims or “secular leftists.” Fact of the matter is a lot of Right Wing ideology has its roots in Antisemitism. A lot of Anti-Communism and Anti-Socialism is in fact based in that.

One of the worst things the Soviet Era abuses did. It made it possible to call a severe distortion of the perception of reality on par with a psychosis a political opinion or religious belief and basically getting away with it.

Yeah it is too bad that Donohue has never been reigned in like Coughlin eventually was. Speaking of which, he was in the news today whining about the Pope admitting that Christians and in specific Catholics have been intolerant to gays so Catholics shouldn’t act like Muslims have a monopoly on homophobia. Billy went ballistic and said he’s never been bigoted towards a gay person and that gay people have been plenty bigoted to him. He really is a pathetic bigot. He’s very Antisemitic too.

Donohue was asked by CNN’s Chris Cuomo today if he’d follow the Pope’s advice and apologize to LGBTQ persons. Cuomo also made the point that Donohue’s targeted LGBTQ Americans for years and years. He wouldn’t admit that he has and went on to say that the media invites him on to talk about them. He said he wouldn’t follow the Pope’s advice, and he then claimed that he’s been attacked by LGBTQ persons. A BIG lie. Dude has gotten rich attacking LGBTQ citizens for no reason other than he knows he can do it and get away with it. He went on to say that LGBTQ persons should apologize to him and told them to send their apologies to him via FEDX. There’s something very wrong with this guy.

Chuck Johnson dons plastic gloves, deeply probes Obama’s first book draft for DNA ‘evidence,’ misspellings

As Barack Obama nears the end of his second and last term as president, what better time is there to try to discredit him, so he can’t run for office again?

Well, Award Winning JournalistTM and junior CSI Chuck C. Johnson says it’s never too late to battle “Obamaism,” that national personality cult that has brought the USA to its knees under the current liberal-atheist-Muslim-socialist dictatorship under which we all now suffer.

Under overwhelming odds, and while avoiding the sinister Obama Secret Police, Johnson spent several thousand dollars (of other people’s money) for what he claims is the first draft of Obama’s memoir, Dreams from My Father. And he says he bought it from Barack Obama’s half-brother, Malik! Totally believable!

He’s going to “scan” the pages for DNA (hence the plastic gloves and clean-room-like sterile conditions), in hopes of proving Obama’s father was not really Barack Obama Sr., but Frank Davis.

Stop laughing. This is serious scientific stuff.

re: #57 electrotek

Ok, not killing, but Jesus wasn’t beyond the use of violence:

13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”

Also, from a purely historical/political view, it makes sense that Jesus didn’t preach open violent rebellion. Judea was controlled by the Roman Empire at the time he live (I consider that an assumption, but that’s another argument), and they ended up executing him as a traitor/rebel rouser anyway. Does anyone honestly believe had Jesus lived and gained political power (including having an army) that he wouldn’t have made some teachings on how/when/where/why to strike down the non-believers?

If Jesus was historical, he was probably an apocalyptic prophet preaching the world was going to end soon. Such earthly matters as to who runs Judea, etc., thus were not of primary concern. Hence “render unto Caesar”, etc. There isn’t much to suggest he saw himself as a political/rebel leader.

It’s sort of like Hitler. Sure, Hitler was a Christian. But he wasn’t driven by Christianity (being influenced by the historical Christian antisemitism and being driven by religious precepts are very different things), his Christianity was heterodox in comparison to his environment, it could be called a “liberal” version (in the sense of non-fundamentalist, not sticking to traditional conservative interpretations), with free interpretation of the Bible, knocking down of Paul, reinterpreting Jesus as he himself saw fit, etc. - i.e. what we see many non-fundie Christians doing.

I have yet to encounter any Christian anywhere who didn’t freely interpret the Bible and reinterpret Jesus as he sees fit. Fundies love to claim they believe the whole thing is the literal word of god in every single letter, but that’s bullshit. They choose which verses inform their beliefs, and they interpret away unpleasant contradictions to it, like the ‘camel/eye of the needle’ verse. They find absolute personhood at conception in the ‘I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb’, but handwave away the limited punishment for causing a miscarriage.

So, no, it’s not just ‘non-fundie Christians’.

Oh, they do fail at literalism, both because of politics and because it’s impossible to literally interpret a self-contradicting series of texts. The point is, they try (self-deludingly, if you will) to stay literal, whereas the “liberal” approach has been reveling in rejecting literalness, branding large continuous parts of the Bible figurative, non-historical, even going so far in some cases as to get rid of the whole OT or Paul.

The literalists are the ones claiming literalism, but you never, for example, hear them talking about the message of the Sermon on the Mount. Nope, it’s Leviticus and the Epistles for them. So, they may not brand large parts of the bible as figurative. They just ignore them.

As an aside, an ethics based on the Bible, the Talmud, the Quran or some other ancient scripture - is simply outdated by centuries, if not millennia, and is not useful in the modern world. Sure, you can scrap up a few allegedly good verses here and there that would conform to universal humanistic principles, but why bother and not simply use those principles? Using the ancient scriptures also means the baggage is coming along. Jesus et al. might (or might not) have been great moral teachers in their times, but today they’re not, and many of the things these guys (allegedly) said are inapplicable today and often are just downright horrible judged from today’s perspective.

Case in point, the above-mentioned Sermon on the Mount. Any liberal praising it should read the whole thing more closely and critically. It’s full of religious fanaticism (“unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers”), not fond of harsh opinions (“anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell”), full of misogyny and sex-negativity (“anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away”), nonsensical social mores and attitudes (“But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery”, “love your enemies”, “do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear”, “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself”).

Clearly not for today’s world.

Hillary Clinton has been the target of possibly the longest and most intense campaign of hate and vilification ever directed at a public figure in this country. Yet she will probably be elected President in November. This will be an absolute, unmitigated catastrophe for the right wing as we know and loathe it, and a resounding repudiation of their claims, their credibility, and their values. Will it be an extinction level event for them? Probably not (though we can always hope). Their grift will continue as long as there are marks to be fleeced, but they may well cease to be a serious factor in national politics.

Hmmm, I have like 4 mosquito bites. Rare as hell out here in So Cal.

Probably Zika. What are the symptoms?

Seriously. To be pregnant right now? Horror.

And you have summed up why the GOP is going to block and deflect any responsibility for dealing with Zika, because one of the main things we can do against it is to make contraception readily available for women of childbearing age…

…and that is against the will of God and God’s Own Party.

re: #100 Blind Frog Belly White

I have yet to encounter any Christian anywhere who didn’t freely interpret the Bible and reinterpret Jesus as he sees fit. Fundies love to claim they believe the whole thing is the literal word of god in every single letter, but that’s bullshit. They choose which verses inform their beliefs, and they interpret away unpleasant contradictions to it, like the ‘camel/eye of the needle’ verse.

If you want to see if they are a true Christian, just go up, slap them and ask for their cloak and see how they react.

re: #113 Nyet

Enlightened followers of revealed religions understand that although the text might be inspired by God/Allah, etc., they have to be read and interpreted through the eyes and minds of the people who recorded them centuries ago: people who did not understand mental illness, infectious disease, the nature of human sexuality or many other principles of modern science.

Stupid question here but how exactly did CCJ get his start anyhow? Who the hell thought it was a great idea to give a moron like this any sort of cred? I mean Shapiro’s a pathetic hack too but at least Ben can point to his academic background and the fact he has a JD.

We can pretty much blame Alan Dershowitz for Chuck. Chuck was picked to debate Dersh when Alan visited and spoke at his high school, where Dersh’s son also attended. He saw something in Chuck and made him his research assistant. Chuck then went to college and parlayed that connection into gigs with Breitbart, WSJ and The Daily Caller. He’s so unstable though that he could never turn any of that into a legit career, flaming out in a series of embarrassing articles that ended with him partnering with Obama birther Joel S. Gilbert, who purchased the Got News domain for him in exchange for promoting Gilbert’s documentary, based on bizarre conspiracy theories regarding Obama’s parentage. One bit of trivia, the Got News domain had previously been part of the Got Milk ad campaign (seriously.) Most people know the rest, he got kicked off Twitter, unsuccessfully sued Gawker and has steadily become more and more racist and psychologically unhinged over time.

I wasn’t aware of all the Joel Gilbert details, or the Got Milk connection. Thanks.

AFAIK, each time he left some media outlet, it was right after he did something that crossed the line. Then either he quit in a huff, or he was told to leave, but the pattern suggests he doesn’t play well with others. Eventually, he and Pax Dickinson will have a falling out, too.

Chuck’s only real allies right now are the alt right types, and even they aren’t 100% loyal because he married an Asian woman and they don’t like that sort of thing.

To me this can be compared with the YECs that acknowledge the sheer force and strength of the evolutionary theory (instead of just denying it) but still accept the young Earth.

I respect their intellectual honesty and if there are to be YECs, I’d rather that they were of this rare sort, they wouldn’t push their beliefs in schools, they don’t lie about science etc. - but I still gotta wonder how they tick with such an enormous cognitive dissonance, and why.

Same with the people who acknowledge that the scriptures were not simply written down by people but were at least in large part a product of their minds (and hence of the environment). Socially, I welcome them more than “each word was inspired” crowd”, but intellectually I understand the latter more than the former.

I also cannot but notice that as far as ancient scriptures go, they must be combed through to find a few still good and relevant parts, i.e. the texts are basically being tortured in order to conform to the modern liberal views, not vice versa.

His “strategy” has a certain self-defeating air about it. If this whole campaign was just an elaborate ruse to get back at all the people who said he couldn’t succeed, he might be afraid he might actually do that. Or, he’s reluctant to enter into the general election campaign, where he will be eviscerated by HRC and the Democrats. A guy with his ego doesn’t just tuck his tail between his legs and go home willingly. He needs to be forced out, so he can blame somebody else — like the GOP leadership that shunned him in the first place.

ISIS used 3 suicide bombers and still killed fewer than one man with an assault rifle in America did.

They used assault rifles, though, and theirs were full auto. Here’s a photo of one of them:

The terrorist who carried this AK used the same taped magazine trick used by the Orlando terrorist to reduce the time needed for his reload. Unlike Orlando he only had two magazines, as the AK was intended to let him get to into position to blow himself up.

And let’s not forget one of these Istanbul terrorists blew himself up after being shot short of his goal by a Turkish security officer and another was stopped short being tackled by another security officer, the 2nd officer dying in the terrorist’s HBIED blast.

The Istanbul attack was somewhat less lethal than the Orlando attack because of a stronger security response, security positioned because the airport was deemed a priority target long in advance.

Artificial Intelligence. Nothing can really go wrong right?
AI Beats Air Force Colonel in Air Combat Simulation

A new AI system developed at the University of Cincinnati has soundly beaten retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Gene Lee in a high-fidelity air combat simulation. Lee, who has been training pilots since the 1980s, was shot down every time, was unable to score a single kill and said he was “surprised at how aware and reactive it was.”

The AI, called ALPHA, beat human pilots even when its speed, weapons, and sensor capabilities were limited. Supposedly, ALPHA can come up with strategies “over 250 times faster than ALPHA’s human opponents could blink,” even though it can run on a Raspberry Pi machine with limited processing power. The goal is for it to one day control a fleet of unmanned combat vehicles while helping a human pilot. Now this is technology that we better be sure doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.

Boise woman is nation’s first female tank crew member

Sgt. 1st Class Erin Smith graduated last week from the 15-week course, which took place at a Boise training facility

The training became possible after Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in December that all U.S. military positions would be opened to women

The Idaho Army National Guard hopes Smith’s example will lead other women to join the Guard

See the article for a picture of Sgt. Smith. The other picture is what I’m posting, minus its caption (the caption said the M1A2 has a 3 person crew, but in fact it requires 4.):

Yes, that photo was taken while Sgt. Smith was driving the tank.

He is truly an idiot when it comes to economics. Isolating the USA from foreign trade is not going to bring back jobs. Well, gamma radiation would just kill you. AI, on the other hand, is plausible if unlikely in the near future.

Then again, people never imagined personal computers, smartphones and a worldwide network connecting them all would arise as quickly as they did.

I’ve just started watching Person of Interest from the beginning. The AI in the first season is almost believable, though the TV trope of every CCTV camera everywhere being accessible by an AI (or human hacker) is really getting old. Facial recognition software is almost good enough to be reliable, but machines do not have the innate ability human brains have in recognizing faces, so they make errors.

Even so, the show is well written, so I’m going to watch the whole thing over my long summer holiday.

I just get tired of the assumption that they are automatically going to wipe out humanity because some movie said so. If movies were accurate, we would already be colonizing Mars by now.

Now, as we know, the surest way to turn someone into a monster is to treat them as one, so maybe this will be self-fulfilling. But movies like Terminator are meant to be scary and are meant to sell tickets.

Systems are getting more intelligent over time, and I do believe we will have to define some as sentient in the future.

My first exposures to a fictional AI was Mycroft HOLMES in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, and the robots of Isaac Asimov. I’d like to believe in that kind of AI, a benevolent, curious intelligence rather than a malevolent, genocidal agent of destruction.

The Terminator series is basically Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, updated for the computer age.

Texas businessman Sam Wyly, who has given millions of dollars over the years to conservative causes and politicians, will now have to fork over more than $1 billion to Uncle Sam.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a federal judge has ordered Wyly to pay $1.1 billion in tax penalties after he was found guilty of using offshore accounts to commit tax fraud.

The problem here is that the 81-year-old Wyly doesn’t have that sort of cash at his disposal anymore — as the Journal notes, the one-time billionaire’s net worth “has fallen to a fraction” of what he owes to the federal government.

Judge Barbara Houser explained this week that Wyly owes tax payments to the government dating all the way back to 1992.

Turkey’s policies in regards to DAESH led to this. Erdogan left the border open for crossings of weapons and men from DAESH.

I am hoping at some point that the people of Turkey wake up, and kick out the AKP. If not, maybe the best thing to happen would be for Turkey to Splinter in 3. A coastal state along the Aegean, Central Turkey, and Kurdistan.

Somebody at Daily Kos makes an Argument that the Quinnipiac polls are oversampling White Men, and that the Hispanic Numbers are hilariously off.

For example, they have Clinton with just a 50-33 lead with Hispanics (?!?!), and are modeling a 51%-49% turnout in favour of women, when history has shown, since 2004 that women votes a more numerous at a stable 53.5-46.5, with a variance of just .2% since 2004.

Normally I’d agree. However in this unique election cycle I think early numbers very favorable to Hillary might be good.

Everything about this election is strange. I sometimes wonder what the hell people are actually using to make a decision. And, the media has made what should be no contest (based on real facts of ability) into a ‘close’ horse race so I think they have distorted reality with things like giving Trump free coverage and making him seem legit.

It helps convince many people that buy into her ‘unfavorables’ being BS because so many others do not believe it or are ignoring that talk.

And if Trump looks weak he may lose the front runner/wagon riders who want to be with the winners.

To be fair to Mr Corbyn, he is correct in saying he does have the support of party members, and so can ignore the MPs vote. He did get elected by party members on a larger margin than Tony Blair when he got elected, and if there was a leadership election tomorrow, he’d probably get back in by membership vote. So that’s not the problem for Corbyn.

Jeremy Corbyn’s problem is that he has to be the leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition in these difficult times, and he has to do it with at least 80% of his MPs thinking he shouldn’t be there. This is clearly an untenable position.
